The objective was to evaluate the agronomic performance of black wattle seedlings (Acacia mearnsii) grown on substrates with increasing proportions of biochar based on anaerobic sewage sludge (ASS-biochar). O objetivo foi avaliar as propriedades físico-hídricas de diferentes substratos e seus efeitos no desenvolvimento de mudas de alface em sistema floating. O estudo foi realizado em casa de vegetação durante os meses de janeiro e fevereiro de 2017. O delineamento foi de blocos casualizados, com 16 tratamentos, representandos por 13 proporções de substratos à base de composto orgânico, casca de arroz carbonizada e vermiculita e três substratos comerciais. Foram avaliadas as características físico-hídricas (fração granulométrica, densidade seca, porosidade total, espaço de aeração, água facilmente disponível, água disponível, água remanescente e capacidade de retenção de água), pH e condutividade elétrica dos substratos. O número de folhas, altura das plantas, comprimento do sistema radicular, massa fresca de raiz e parte aérea e massa seca de raiz e parte aérea foram avaliados aos 25 dias após a emergência. O espaço de aeração e a água remanescente são as variáveis físico-hídricas aprioritárias que devem ser avaliadas em substratos que serão utilizados em sistema floating. As formulações com 33,33% de composto orgânico, 43,33 a 53,33% de casca de arroz carbonizada, e 23,33 a 13,33% de vermiculita apresentaram os melhores desempenhos entre os substratos estudados para a produção de mudas de alface em sistema floating. Amongst others, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are emerging as a tool for alternative land tenurerecording. The advent of low cost, reliable and lightweight UAVs has created new opportunities forcollecting timely, tailored and high-quality geospatial information. Even though UAVs appear a promisingtechnology, it is not clear to what extent it can contribute to existing land tenure recording workflows ofcommunities and governments. The case study method was applied to obtain valuable insights into theopportunities of UAV technology to support the updating process of the Rwandan cadastre. Field data werecollected in Rwanda in February 2019, which encompassed several UAV flights and the consultation ofrelevant stakeholders. Additionally, a participatory mapping pilot study was initiated to allow the comparisonof the existing cadastral base data with parcel boundaries delineated on top of the plotted UAV orthophoto.Results revealed an apparent discrepancy of the spatial location and extent of both parcel datasets and pinnedthe need to update the cadastre. It was found that especially in areas with significant developments and apoor quality of the first level registration, UAV-based orthophotos provide profound and reliable base datafor participatory boundary delineation to update the spatial representation of the cadastre.

This paper is based on the achievements of “its4land”, a European Commission Horizon 2020 project. Grounded on cutting edge approaches such as fit-for-purpose land administration, “its4land” is using strategic collaboration between the EU and East Africa to deliver innovative, scalable, and transferrable ICT solutions that respond to sub-Saharan Africa’s immense challenge to secure land rights.

Mapping millions of unrecorded land rights in large parts of Sub-Saharan Africa remains a challenge. The results of many existing ICT-based approaches for recording these rights have often proven to be inappropriate; therefore, a new generation of tools needs to be developed to map land rights faster, cheaper, easier, and more responsible. This is the main goal of its4land, a European Commission Horizon 2020 project that aims to develop innovative tools that respond to the continuum of land rights, fit-for-purpose approach, and provide cadastral intelligence. To deliver innovative, scalable, and transferrable ICT solutions, the its4land project builds on strategic collaborations between the EU and East Africa. The innovation process incorporates a broad range of stakeholders and emergent geospatial technologies including smart sketch maps, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), interactive feature extraction, as well as sharing and publishing land information through geocloud services. The aim is to combine these innovative approaches with the specific needs, market opportunities and readiness of end users in the domain of land recording in East Africa. Moreover, the land recording tools target both top-down and bottom-up approaches and thus support formal land registration processes, as well as informal community-based land resource documentation. The project consists of a four-year work plan, €3.9M funding, and eight consortium partners collaborating with stakeholders from different case study locations in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Rwanda that cover different land uses such as urban, peri-urban, rural smallholder, and (former) pastoralists. Major technical tasks include tool development, prototyping, and demonstration for local, national, regional, and international interest groups. However, equal emphasis is placed on needs assessment, as well as governance, capacity and business modelling. This paper will present the unique its4land land administration toolbox in which the exploitable results of the its4land project are integrated. It will describe each of these exploitable results which cover different software tools for recording land tenure information based on hand-drawn sketch maps, UAV-driven workflows for land tenure data acquisition, and semi-automatic and interactive delineation of visible cadastral boundaries, all integrated in a software platform to publish and share land information via geocloud services. The toolbox also combines consultancy services in the fields of needs assessment, and the development of governance and capacity building models for innovative technologies.

Avaliou-se o efeito da retenção de água de substratos para plantas formulados a partir de diferentes proporções de lodo de esgoto (LETE) solarizado, na produção de mudas de acácia-negra (Acacia mearnsii). O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação e no Laboratório de Física do Solo da Embrapa Clima Temperado. O LETE utilizado foi coletado em leitos de secagem de uma Estação de Tratamento de Esgoto aeróbio de Rio Grande - RS. Os tratamentos consistiram de cinco doses de LETE solarizado, combinadas com cinza de casca de arroz e vermiculita em diferentes proporções (20:40:40, 30:35:35, 40:30:30, 50:25:25 e 60:20:20) e dois substratos comerciais (Beifort® S10 B e Mec Plant®). O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados. Foram avaliadas as características físico-hídricas: água facilmente disponível, água tamponante, água remanescente e capacidade de retenção de água. As variáveis de crescimento avaliadas foram: massa fresca da parte aérea e do sistema radicular. O substrato com 20% de LETE solarizado, 40% vermiculita e 40% cinza de casca de arroz apresentou a melhor condição físico-hídrica para o desenvolvimento de mudas de acácia-negra. There is a clear demand for effective land administration systems that can support the protection of unrecorded land rights, thereby assisting to reduce poverty and support national development. Within the framework of the its4land project, we developed and tested innovative remote sensing applications to support land rights mapping in response to local needs in Kenya. We applied Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and developed a method for an automated delineation of visible boundaries based on the acquired UAV images (Figure 1 and 2). For our test areas in Kenya, UAVs were identified as having a high potential for creating up‐to‐date base maps that can support various current land administration tasks. The automated boundary delineation was found to be useful to simplify the digitization of visible cadastral boundaries.

Since the past two years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are evolving as a mapping tool in African countries. However, conditions for flying, controlling and referencing respective data are more complex than in Europe and are often underestimated. Especially geometric accuracy and radiometry are negatively influenced by densely populated areas and adverse meteorological conditions. More than 40 datasets from 8 UAV field campaigns and demonstrations in Zanzibar, Rwanda and Kenya are used to conclude findings on opportunities and challenges to achieve high levels of data quality. The realm of land administration is currently being challenged: conventional western-oriented land administration systems have mostly failed to supply their expected results in developing countries. Amongst others, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are evolving as a tool for alternative land tenure data acquisition approaches. However, major bottlenecks such as regulatory frameworks and time-consuming ground truthing are issues currently hindering large-scale implementation. This study sheds light into the design process of UAV-based data acquisition workflows and reveals results of initial field tests in Rwanda and Germany. Insights of operational challenges and data quality measures will be presented. The research is associated with the EU H2020 project “its4land”.

Hintergrund Als Standardverfahren zur präoperativen bildmorphologischen Diagnostik bei Patienten mit zentralen malignen Lungentumoren ist das axiale 2-D-Computertomogramm des Thorax akzeptiert und etabliert. Tumorausdehnung, Infiltration von zentralen Strukturen oder segmentaler Bezug sind entscheidende Parameter zur Abklärung der technischen Operabilität und des Resektionsausmaßes. Durch computergestützte Methoden der Segmentierung anatomischer Strukturen in CT-Daten (Fraunhofer MeVis, Bremen) ist erstmals eine selektive dreidimensionale Visualisierung möglich. Patienten und Methodik Im Zeitraum zwischen 08/07 und 06/09 wurden 22 Patienten mit zentralem Lungentumor in der Thoraxchirurgischen Abteilung der Universität Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck, behandelt. 15 Männer, 7 Frauen, mittleres Alter bei Diagnosestellung 60,2 Jahre (Spannweite 41-74 Jahre). Lediglich 4 von 22 Patienten waren Nichtraucher gewesen, die übrigen 18 Patienten hatten eine zum Teil erhebliche Raucheranamnese. 20 Patienten hatten ein primäres Bronchialkarzinom, je ein Patient hatte ein Lokalrezidiv nach Tumorlobektomie bzw. eine zentrale Lungenmetastase eines extrapulmonalen Primarius. In allen Fällen wurde präoperativ ein Dünnschicht-MSDCT (Multi-slice detector computer tomogramm) angefertigt. Die Daten wurden mittels computerassistierter Software dreidimensional rekonstruiert und visualisiert. Lungenfunktionstests, geschätzte postoperative Lungenrestfunktion, Bronchoskopiebefund, Allgemeinzustand des Patienten sowie die 3-D-rekonstruierten CT-Datensätze wurden zur individuellen präoperativen Risikoanalyse und Auswahl der Operationstaktik verwendet. Ergebnisse Vierzehn der 22 Patienten wurden aufgrund der durchgeführten Risikoanalyse operiert, 7 Patienten wurden als funktionell inoperabel eingestuft, ein Patient war technisch inoperabel. Insgesamt wurden 5 Pneumonektomien, 4 Bi-/Lobektomien, 3 erweiterte Lobektomien und jeweils eine atypische Resektion und eine Manschettenresektion durchgeführt. 2 Patienten wurden im Stadium I operiert, 7 Patienten im Stadium II und 3 Patienten im Stadium IIIa. Der mediane stationäre Aufenthalt betrug 8,5±33,0 Tage. Die Hospitalletalität betrug bei 0%. Die 3-D-Visualisierung des Tumors sowie der anatomische Bezug zu Nachbarstrukturen waren in allen Fällen exakt möglich. Intraoperativ konnte die 3-D-Rekonstruktion zu 100% validiert werden. Schlussfolgerung Die computerassistierte 3-D-Rekonstruktion eines Thorax-CT ist eine neuartige und vielversprechende Methode zur präoperativen Darstellung und Risikoanalyse von zentralen Lungentumoren. Die 3-D-Visualisierung des Tumors in Kombination mit farbkodierter Lappenzugehörigkeit, beweglich in allen Ebenen, ermöglicht dem Chirurgen eine differenzierte Strategieplanung bei zentralen Lungentumoren.
