In this study, we combined the results of two controlled trials and examined the relationships between working alliance, telepresence, cognitive change, and treatment outcome. Sixty-five participants with a primary diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) received cognitive behavior therapy delivered via videoconference. Participants completed measures of working alliance and telepresence after three psychotherapy sessions. They also completed measures of treatment outcome and dysfunctional beliefs (cognitive change) specific to PDA and GAD at pretreatment and posttreatment. Results revealed that telepresence at the fifth session moderated the relationship between the working alliance at the first and fifth sessions. As telepresence increased, its impact on the working alliance diminished. Cognitive change mediated the relationship between the working alliance at the fifth session and treatment outcome.

Telepsychotherapy represents a promising solution to problems pertaining to specialized mental health services accessibility, including when delivering psychotherapy to people who do not have access to care due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The quality of the working alliance established in such a therapeutic context remains often questioned. Moreover, no study has comparatively examined the evolution of the alliance over telepsychotherapy and conventional, face-to-face, psychotherapy. This study assesses the impact of cognitive- behavioral therapy administered via telepsychotherapy or face-to-face on the quality of the working alliance. One hundred and 15 participants suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) took part in this randomized controlled trial, 50 of whom were assigned to telepsychotherapy in videoconference and 65 of whom were assigned to conventional psychotherapy. Each client and their psychotherapist completed the Working Alliance Inventory every 2 sessions. In the current sample, telepsychotherapy did not interfere with the establishment of the working alliance over the course of the treatment for GAD. On the contrary, clients showed a stronger working alliance in telepsychotherapy delivered in videoconference than in conventional psychotherapy. Clients seemed to be more comfortable with telepsychotherapy than psychotherapists. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

This review assesses whether it is possible to build a strong therapeutic alliance (TA) during an individual psychological intervention administered by videoconference for the anxiety disorders spectrum. Ten studies were identified. Interventions were delivered by videoconference or through the Skype communication software. Results indicate that a good quality TA can emerge during telepsychotherapy for disorders of the anxiety spectrum. However, more studies need to be conducted to provide additional empirical support to this question. A better understanding of conditions promoting the establishment of a therapeutic relationship despite the distance also needs to be targeted to guide health professionals in a judicious use of this form of innovative intervention.

- Abstract
Application of Dual-process Theory to Information Systems: Current and Future Research Directions addresses the dual-process approach to attitude formation as it has been applied to the domain of Information Systems (IS). It describes twenty six empirical research studies published in the IS literature that have been based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) or the Heuristic Systematic Model (HSM) - variants of the dual-process approach. Some of the IS phenomena that these studies have explored include the IS training process, website trust and privacy assurance, perceptions of online health records, adoption of expert systems'advice, design of recommendation systems, computer-mediated communication, and knowledge management. Application of Dual-process Theory to Information Systems: Current and Future Research Directions starts by clarifying exactly what a dual-process approach is and how to apply it. The author then defines a logical schema for categorizing the extant dual-process IS research, using it to group these studies into these categories and briefly reviewing each study. This helps to address the need to understand these studies in relation to each other with the aim of integrating them and forestalling fragmentation of this body of work. The discussion section begins by identifying three streams of this research that are outliers, and then examines those heuristic cues and moderating factors in the studies reviewed that are clearly IS constructs; suggesting they bear further dual-process based IS research. Finally, the author elucidates three particular IS phenomena that present excellent opportunities for applying this approach in the future: (1) information filtering during complex problem solving, (2) how trust and credibility assessment interact with system design features, and (3) organizational knowledge work.

Background: Cyclic mastalgia (CM) is premenstrual bilateral and diffuse breast pain that presents cyclically and affects women in their reproductive years. It may associate with latent hyperprolactinemia due to the insufficient inhibitory effect of dopamine on the pituitary gland. Vitex agnus-castus (VAC) is known for its dopaminergic activity and its possible actions on CM and latent hyperprolactinemia. However, the treatment effect of VAC on CM remains unclear. Materials and methods: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials that report on the efficacy of VAC treatment in CM patients, literature search was performed in major research databases. Results: This review includes 25 studies (17 randomized control trials plus eight nonrandomized trials). VAC was effective in relieving breast pain intensity and lowering the increased serum prolactin level in reproductive age CM patients (18–45 years) with or without premenstrual syndromes. Typical dosage was 20–40 mg/day with a treatment duration of 3 months. A conservative meta-analysis included only six studies (n = 718: VAC – 356, placebo – 362) and revealed a moderate effect size (SMD 0.67, 95% CI 0.5–0.85) favoring VAC over a placebo. Seven trials demonstrated VAC to be a noninferior alternative to pharmaceutical therapies for CM, including dopamine agonists, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and hormonal contraceptives. VAC was safe and associated with only mild and reversible adverse events. However, the risk of bias in most studies was unclear due to insufficient information. Conclusion: VAC is a safe and effective treatment option for CM. More high-quality clinical trials are needed to strengthen the evidence base.

Sustainable consumption has the potential to hold firms accountable for the negative externalities they impose on society and the environment, but consumers are often unsure whether to believe that the products and companies promoted as being sustainable are truly sustainable. This research investigates novices’ credibility assessments of online sustainability ratings reports using a laboratory experiment and a dual-process theoretical lens. It identifies and operationalizes two new heuristic cues that theory suggests should be influential in this process: the For-profit status of the company that produced the expert reports, and its Strategic Ties. Each participant looked up companies’ sustainability ratings on two databases, one of which was perceived to be significantly easier to use and more credible than the other. Database Credibility and the For-profit status of the company producing the database both significantly affected perceptions of content usefulness. The impact of the Strategic Ties heuristic was inconclusive and merits further research. We are beginning to accumulate significant research on the effects of explicit labels and standards on consumer behavior. This research points to the need to understand the effects of available implicit heuristics as well, and offers many potential avenues for future research.
