Background: Physical education (PE) teachers report needing additional support in terms of classroom climate and students' motivation (Verret et al. [2017]. Professional development represents an opportunity to exchange on their practices with colleagues, become familiar with the latest research on effective motivational strategies, develop new skills and support transfer into practice. Objective: This study aims to determine if participation in a 2-day training course (spread over 3 days) on how to create an empowering motivational climate impacted students' motivational variables (self-determined motivation, basic needs satisfaction, perception of motivational climate and PE effort as well as their intention to be physically active) and observed motivational climate. Research design: Quasi-experimental study Method: A total of 11 PE teachers (experimental group-EG=6, control group-CG=5) and their students (elementary=107, secondary=100) were recruited. Students completed questionnaires twice: once before the course and once after it was over. Teachers were filmed during two lessons: once before the start of training and once between the second and the last day of training, during a motivational strategy experiment planned by PE teachers on the second day of training. To analyze the data, we used non-parametric tests: the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test for related samples. Two experts coded the videos (intrarater reliability=90.6%; interrater reliability=93.8%).Findings: Results indicate that the teachers' training had no significant positive effect on students' motivation. In fact, it was surprising to observe a significant decline in students' perception of an empowering motivational climate and effort in the experimental group. However, scores were already quite high at the start of the year, remained high in the middle of the year and were similar for the two groups. Between both measurement points, the control group's amotivation increased and autonomy satisfaction decreased. This was not the case for students in the experimental group, suggesting that the training course might be effective in avoiding the detriment of students' motivation. PE teachers in the experimental group were more empowering during the integration phase of the lesson. Gaps and the overall rating of the lesson (motivational climate) were both more empowering in the experimental group, but did not reach statistical significance (p=.066), which is promising for future interventions.

Substance use disorder is a worldwide issue that entails negative health and physical activity is a promising complementary therapy for alleviating the consequences. The objective of this reviews is to characterize physical activity interventions offered in the literature and explore their effects during treatment for people with substance use disorders with excluding studies focusing only on tobacco use. A systematic search of seven databases on articles including a physical activity intervention during a treatment for substance use disorder was done and an examination of the presence of bias was performed. A total of 43 articles including 3135 participants were identified. Most studies were randomized controlled trial (81%), followed by pre-post design (14%) and cohort studies (5%). The most common physical activity intervention identified was of moderate intensity, 3 times per week (≈ 1 hour) for 13 weeks. Cessation/reduction of substance use was the most studied outcome (21 studies, 49%), and 75% showed a decrease in substance use following physical activity intervention. Aerobic capacity was the second most studied effect (14 studies, 33%), with more than 71% of studies showing improvement. Twelve studies (28%) reported a decrease of depressive symptoms. Physical activity interventions in a treatment for substance use disorder seem to be a promising, but more methodologically rigorous scientific studies are needed.

Purpose: To assess if high school students’ leisure-time physical activity is predicted by their perception of the motivational climate, their perceived competence, and their achievement goals in physical education (PE) and if these variables interact with each other. Methods: A sample of 843 high school students completed self-reported questionnaires in the middle and at the end of the school year. The data were analyzed by structural equation modeling and latent moderated structural equations. Results: Leisure-time physical activity was positively predicted by students’ performance-approach goals and perceived competence in PE and by the interaction between their perceived competence and their adoption of mastery goals. Discussion/Conclusion: Only individual variables in PE were related to leisure-time physical activity. The significant interaction effect between students’ mastery goals and perceived competence in PE suggests that teachers need to foster students’ perceptions of competence. The authors therefore discuss the scope of the results with regard to pedagogical practices.

Organized sport yields many cognitive, social and physical benefits and is one of the most popular types of physical activity for children and adolescents. Despite the benefits of sports participation, a substantial proportion of adolescents fail to meet Canadian guidelines regarding physical activity. In this regard, it is relevant to understand the mechanisms underlying the adoption of various active behaviours. This study aims to identify the predisposing, enabling and reinforcing factors that potentially influence 4 categories of active behaviours using the Youth Physical Activity Promotion model (YPAP). Data was drawn from 416 male adolescent hockey players (Mage = 15.4; SD = 2) who completed a pre-validated questionnaire. Structural equation modeling and interaction analyses were performed to explain the contribution of each determinant. Findings reveal that there are different behavioural patterns based on the type of activity. The interaction between attitudes and environmental factors was a key predictor for each type of behaviour. Perceived competence was associated with more recreational activities, whereas the support of parents and coaches determined involvement in ice hockey. This study refined our understanding of physical activity participation among adolescents already involved in organized sports and emphasized the importance of considering multiple factors surrounding their environment. Several practical recommendations are made to improve young athletes' predisposition to practice physical activity in an organized sports setting.

Based on achievement goal theory, this study aimed to verify if relationships between student-perceived motivational climate and student achievement goals differ by teacher-induced climates in physical education (PE). A sample of 651 French Canadian students and 23 PE teachers (categorized in three clusters) completed self-report questionnaires. To verify if the climate–goals relationships differ according to the teacher-induced climate, this study conducted a multigroup invariance analysis. The results revealed full invariance across groups for means and intercepts. However, only partial invariance was observed for variance, covariances, structural weights, and residuals, indicating that, despite disparities between students’ and teachers’ perceptions, the teacher-induced climate seems to play a role in students’ goal adoption in PE. This study refines current understanding of the climate–goals relationship by considering the teachers’ perspective of their practices in PE. Practical implications are discussed. Subscribe to TPE

Scientific evidence reveals a significant decline in exercise behaviors during adolescence. Although multiple school-based initiatives have been implemented in Canada, little is known of how these initiatives affect students' motivation for subsequent physical activity (PA). The transcontextual model of motivation offers an interesting approach to assessing the long-term, motivational impact of school-based interventions, and we used this model to study how adolescent girls' need satisfactions, first observed within supervised PA (in the FitSpirit FitClub), correlated with their inclinations toward nonsupervised PA behaviors later. Adolescent girls in this study ( N = 259; M = 14.34, SD = 1.49 years) completed a transcontextual model of motivation-based questionnaire regarding their basic psychological needs, motivation, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and PA practice during their FitSpirit club participation. Three weeks after this participation, they reported their PA levels again. The girls' basic psychological needs predicted their autonomous motivation in the FitClub. Their autonomous motivation predicted subjective norms and perceived behavioral control; these factors then determined their intentions to be physically active, and their PA intentions predicted their actual PA behavior during personal (leisure) time three weeks later. Two indirect paths were statistically significant for predicting PA intentions, and three indirect paths were significant for predicting leisure-time PA. Activity motivation, first developed within a supervised context, can increase subsequent leisure-time PA.

De plus, il propose une autre façon d’interpréter l’effet d’interaction qui comporte des avantages en comparaison avec la méthode « sélection d’un point »., This article is a methodological exemplification of the use of Johnson-Neyman’s graphs to interpret the interaction effect between latent variables. It follows the methodological exemplification of Girard and Béland (2017) and provides some updates regarding previously exemplified analyses. Also, it proposes another way of interpreting the interaction effect which has some advantages compared to the “select a point” method., El presente artículo presenta una ejemplificación metodológica de la utilización de los gráficos de Johnson-Neyman para interpretar el efecto de la interacción entre variables latentes. El artículo es una continuación de la ejemplificación metodológica presentada en Girard y Béland (2017) y aporta ciertas actualizaciones con respecto a los análisis previamente ejemplificados. Los profesores han propuesto fomentar y mantener el sentido de pertenencia de los estudiantes en la escuela e investigadores como un medio para estimular la intencion o el deseo de aprender de los estudiantes y para reducir desercion de estudiantes. Este articulo presentara los resultados de una investigacion sobre la literatura sobre pertenencia para apoyar la perspectiva que es necesaria, no solo para fomentar un fuerte sentido de pertenencia, sino tambien para poner un enfasis mucho mayor en la pertenencia programas, practicas e investigacion. Los objetivos del trabajo son: (a) revisar los aspectos teoricos literatura sobre pertenencia a la escuela con enfasis en sus atributos definitorios y principales determinantes, (b) revisar los instrumentos de medicion de la pertenencia a la escuela, y (c) identificar varias estrategias que pueden mejorar la pertenencia a la escuela. A la luz de los atributos definitorios identificados, los autores proponen seis recomendaciones generales para los interesados ​​en la educacion que deseen construir y mantener el sentido de pertenencia de los estudiantes a la escuela.

The estimation of optimal support boundaries under the monotonicity constraint is relatively unexplored and still in full development. This article examines a new extreme-value based model which provides a valid alternative for complete envelopment frontier models that often suffer from lack of precision, and for purely stochastic ones that are known to be sensitive to model misspecification. We provide different motivating applications including the estimation of the minimal cost in production activity and the assessment of the reliability of nuclear reactors.

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the main neoplastic disease in children. Treatment is based on chemotherapy associated or not to bone marrow transplantation. The 5-year survival rate in European children is reported as 86% but long term survival data are not available. We investigated the 20 year Overall Survival (OS) and Net survival (NS) of the patients diagnosed in the population of the Côte d'Or area in France. 162 cases were diagnosed in the population of the Côte d'Or area between 1970 and 2015. Cases diagnosed between 1970 and 1979 (n=29) were not formally registered in the registry database but data were available through the unique regional, reference hematology laboratory. All cases were followed until 01 01 2017. The treatment regimens that were used were as follows in chronological order (from the earliest to the most recent); LAL 76 and 80; the FRALLE 83, 87 and 89 until 1993; the FRALLE 93 from 1993 to 2001 and then the FRALLE 2000. The 20-y OS and NS of ALL was respectively 66% and 67%. It was 59% in boys but 75% in girls (p=0.04). No statistical difference was found according to age. Au Quebec, la fin de l’adolescence concorde avec la transition entre l’ecole secondaire et le collegial. Cette etude porte sur les trajectoires de changement au regard de la pratique d’activites physiques, de la condition physique et des dimensions de l’estime de soi physique d’adolescents prenant part a un programme d’education physique au collegial. De plus, elle evalue les relations entre ces trajectoires de changement ainsi que les differences liees au sexe. Une etude longitudinale comportant six temps de mesure a ete menee aupres d’une cohorte de 256 adolescents (filles = 169, garcons = 87 ; 17 ± 3 ans). Les resultats des analyses de courbes latentes montrent que les perceptions relatives a la condition physique, a l’apparence physique et a la valeur physique evoluent de maniere positive. Ils montrent aussi une augmentation de la pratique d’activites physiques de type cardiovasculaire qui est plus marquee chez les filles. Bien que les garcons rapportent de meilleures perceptions relatives aux dimensions de l’estime de soi physique au debut du collegial, l’evolution de ces dimensions ne differe pas en fonction du sexe. De plus, l’evolution de la valeur physique percue est positivement associee a l’evolution de la condition physique percue (aerobie). Cette derniere est, a son tour, positivement associee a l’evolution de l’apparence physique percue. Finalement, l’evolution de la condition physique aerobie montre une association positive avec l’evolution de la condition physique percue et de la valeur physique percue. En depit du declin de pratique d’activites physiques observe a la fin de l’adolescence, une evolution favorable de l’estime de soi physique et de la condition physique a ete observee chez des jeunes ayant participe a trois cours de 30 heures d’education physique au collegial, repartis sur trois semestres.

UV irradiation can cause cutaneous damage that may be specific according to the wavelength of UV rays. For example, damage from UVB irradiation manifests itself in the form of sunburn cells and enhancement of the expression of p53, while damage from UVA exposure results in an increase in the expression of vimentin. These reactions to UV irradiation were used in this work to evaluate the photoprotective capacities of two sunblock preparations that were applied to the surface of the skin. One sunblock preparation is a UVB absorber containing zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) exclusively. The other sunblock preparation is a new organo-mineral sunblock containing Tinosorb M, OCM, ZnO and TiO 2 . Evaluation of the photoprotective capacities of both preparations on hairless rat skin and on in vitro reconstructed human epidermis revealed that they were effective in preventing UVB-induced damage. In contrast, only the organo-mineral sunblock was effective in the prevention of UVA-specific damage such as dermal alterations characterized by the expression of vimentin. Furthermore, our data support the fact that hairless rat skin and in vitro reconstructed human epidermis are a reliable basis for the evaluation of the photoprotective capacities of various sunscreens against UVB and UVA damage.

The design of new and interesting inorganic frameworks is an ongoing challenge in materials sciences. New structures containing double-four-ring (D4R) units have recently received particular attention. The present work focuses on the computational design of new three-dimensional frameworks made of D4R units exclusively. In a first step, our simulations explore the possible ways to assemble predefined D4R units in 3D space using a sophisticated cascade of simulated annealing/minimizations steps (autoassembly of secondary building units method). While the existing zeotype topologies were successfully generated, new topologies were predicted including very open frameworks containing new types of cages. In a second step, lattice energy minimizations were performed to estimate the viability of these hypothetical frameworks as silicate, aluminophosphaste, and gallophosphate candidates. When comparing the hypothetical structures to existing compounds, our results raise the challenging question of the appropriate chemical composition that should be aimed at for a given framework topology of interest.

The computational design of new and interesting inorganic materials is still an ongoing challenge. The motivation of these efforts is to aid the often difficult task of crystal structure determination, to rationalize different but related structure types, or to help limit the domain of structures that are possible in a given system. Over the past decade, simulation methods have continuously evolved towards the prediction of new structures using minimal input information in terms of symmetry, cell parameters, or chemical composition. So far, this task of identifying candidate structures through an analysis of the energy landscape of chemical systems has been particularly successful for predominantly ionic systems with relatively small numbers of atoms or ions in the simulation cell. After an introductory section, the second section of this work presents the historical developments of such simulation methods in this area. The following sections of the work are dedicated to the introduction of the building unit concept in simulation methods: we present simulation approaches to structure prediction employing both primary (aggregate of atoms) and secondary (aggregate of coordination polyhedra) building units. While structure prediction with primary units is a straightforward extension of established approaches, the AASBU method (automated asssembly of secondary building units) focusses on the topology of network-based structures. This method explores the possible ways to assemble predefined inorganic building units in three-dimensional space, opening the way to the manipulation of very large building units (up to 84 atoms in this work). As illustrative examples we present the prediction of candidate structures for Li(4)CO(4), the identification of topological relationships within a family of metalphosphates, ULM-n and MIL-n, and finally the generation of new topologies by using predefined large building units such as a sodalite or a double-four-ring cage, for the prediction of new and interesting zeolite-type structures.

Our specialized population-based registry has allowed us to explore changes in incidence and survival by subtype over the last 30 years. Between 1980 and 2009, 4790 cases of lymphoid malignancies were registered using the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology. The incidence rate of lymphoid malignancies was 20.5 per 100,000 inhabitants per year, and ranged from 0.1 to 4 according to subtype. Five-year net survival was 65%, and ranged from 41% to 93% according to subtype. We observed an increase in 5-year net survival between the periods 1980-1989 and 2000-2009 (58% vs. 70%). This was observed in most but not all subtypes. Our long-standing population-based registry allowed us to measure differences in trends according to the subtype of lymphoid malignancy. Incidence rates steadily increased in quite frequent entities, and poor survival probability for most entities indicates that they should be the next objective in therapeutic research programs.

A new force field for gallium in gallophosphate microporous solids has been derived, using a formal charge shell model chosen for its compatibility with existing potentials for zeolites and their aluminophosphate analogues. Potentials for gallium were obtained empirically by fitting against the dense structure of GaPO4−quartz and its physical properties. The calculations on various model gallosilicate structures, including gallium in various coordinations (IV, VI), demonstrate the transferability of the new force field to another class of compounds. Finally, our potential reproduces model gallophosphate structures having zeotype architectures with reasonable accuracy, ensuring its validity for further studies of open-framework gallophosphates.

A systematic computational study of gallophosphates was undertaken. First, lattice energy minimization calculations using a formal-charge shell model potential have been carried out on a series of hypothetical gallium phosphates derived from their metallogallophosphate, aluminophosphate, or aluminosilicate analogues through atomic substitution. The minimized structures show the typical features in terms of bond angles and distances as expected in zeolitic gallophosphates. Second, the crystal structures of several gallophosphates in their calcined forms have been predicted, using for each compound lattice energy minimization and an initial model derived from its as-synthesized templated form. All the modified structures thus have the same GaPO(4) composition. The lattice energies of all the simulated gallophosphate structures were compared to that of GaPO(4)-quartz as a reference structure. Interestingly, among all predicted calcined structures, various zeolitic topologies were found. The study of the energetics of these zeotypic structures showed a linear dependence of lattice energy upon density. Strikingly, a few simulated structures showed unrealistic structural features, such as important framework distortions, often associated with the occurrence of a hexameric unit in the original as-synthesized structures. Also, those gallophosphates with structural faults were found in the upper part of the energy/density plot. To address the validity of our force field calculations in these special cases, first principles calculations were undertaken on ULM-4, chosen as a typical representative structure. Indeed, the qualitative agreement found between our results and those obtained with the nonlocal density functional theory demonstrates the robustness of our force field. Further minimization also showed that the inclusion of polarizability is crucial for yielding results comparable with those obtained using first principles methods.

A new aluminophosphate, MIL-34, is investigated from its as-synthesized structure to its calcined microporous form. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements on the as-synthesized MIL-34 (Al(4)(PO(4))(4)OH x C(4)H(10)N, space group P-1, a = 8.701(3) A, b = 9.210(3) A, c = 12.385(3) A, alpha = 111.11(2) degrees, beta = 101.42(2) degrees, gamma = 102.08(2) degrees, V = 863.8(4) A(3), Z = 2, R = 3.8%) reveal a 3-D open framework where Al atoms are in both tetrahedral and trigonal bipyramidal coordinations. It contains a 2-D pore system defined by eight rings where channels along [100] cross channels running along [010] and [110]. CBuA molecules are trapped at their intersection. (27)Al, (31)P, and (1)H MAS NMR spectroscopies corroborate these structural features. Calcination treatments of a powder sample of the as-synthesized MIL-34 indicate its transformation into the related template-free structure that is stable up to 1000 degrees C. Lattice energy minimizations are then used in order to anticipate the crystal structure of the calcined MIL-34, starting with the knowledge of the as-synthesized structure exclusively. Energy minimizations predict a new regular zeotype structure (AlPO(4), space group P-1, a = 8.706 A, b = 8.749 A, c = 12.768 A, alpha = 111.17 degrees, beta = 97.70 degrees, gamma = 105.14 degrees, V = 846.75 A(3), Z = 2) together with a thermodynamic stability similar to that of existing zeotype AlPOs. Excellent agreement is observed between the diffraction pattern calculated from the predicted calcined MIL-34 and the experimental X-ray powder diffraction pattern of the calcined sample. Finally, the atomic coordinates and cell parameters of the calcined MIL-34 predicted from the simulations are used to perform the Rietveld refinement of the calcined sample powder pattern, further corroborated by (27)Al and (31)P NMR measurements. This unique combination of experiment and simulation approaches is an interesting and innovative strategy in materials sciences, where simulations articulate the prediction of a possible template-free framework from its as-synthesized templated form. This is especially valuable when straightforward characterizations of the solid of interest with conventional techniques are not easy to carry out.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the stability of four fluorinated templated gallophosphates upon calcination using lattice energy minimizations and appropriate interatomic potentials, starting from their as-synthesized structures. A careful analysis of the frameworks and energetics of the four predicted calcined structures helps to consider their viability. Three of them have zeotype frameworks and their lattice energies suggest the stability of their as-synthesized forms upon calcination. One of the latter compounds corresponds to its experimentally calcined structure, thus validating the calculations. The last predicted calcined compound shows unrealistic structural feature suggesting the high unstability of its as-synthesized form upon calcinations.

Publisher Summary This chapter presents the application of the automated assembly of secondary building unit (AASBU) method to the prediction of inorganic structures built exclusively of sodalite cages. The calculations are based on a combination of a simulated annealing procedure and cost function minimizations that enforce connections between individual sodalite cages. The assumptions for each simulation run are the space group and the number of sodalite cages per unit cell. The simulations successfully generate the known SOD or LTA frameworks as well as hypothetical frameworks. Lattice energy calculations of these hypothetical frameworks in their pure silicate form, silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ), suggest that they have stabilities similar to existing zeolites.

The crystal structure of AlPO4-14 in its calcined form was predicted using lattice energy minimisation and an initial model derived from its as-synthesised templated form, highlighting the possibility of using computational approaches for exploring thermodynamic stabilities of as-synthesised open-framework structures upon template extraction.

Background Since the 1990s and since the development of humanised monoclonal antibodies in 1998, the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma has undergone profound changes. Follicular lymphoma (FL) was the first to benefit from this treatment, and several clinical trials have shown a significant improvement in overall survival, but little information is available at a population level. Objective Our objective was to estimate changes in FL-specific mortality at a population level, with an appropriate methodology. Methods Two French retrospective population-based studies on FL were conducted, one from 1995 to 2004, in 1477 patients, and one from 1995 to 2010, in 451 patients. Trends in excess mortality rates (EMRs) according to age, sex, Ann Arbor stage and year of diagnosis were evaluated using the flexible model of Remontet et al. Results Trends in the EMR differed according to age at diagnosis and was higher in advanced stage (III, IV) in patients older than 65 yr. The EMR decreased linearly from 1995 to 2010. This decrease was more marked for advanced stages. Conclusion FL-specific mortality decreased over the years of diagnosis, and the difference according to the lymphoma stage diminished in more recent years. However, progress in the management of FL was not able to erase age-related differences.

This article outlines a strategy that we, as high school teachers, used in the academic year 2012-2013 to improve a student’s school engagement. Extracurricular activities such as sports have proven useful (among other strategies) to counter school disengagement, specifically in enhancing positive social relations among the teachers and students involved. The authors present an approach implemented in partnership with the students, and discuss the consequences of this strategy for the students and the desired improvements. Finally, we emphasize the importance of peer involvement, teachers’ collaboration, and the teachers’ willingness to inspire and empower change., Cet article porte sur une stratégie que nous avons mise de l’avant à titre de praticiens afin de susciter l’engagement d’un élève à l’école pendant l’année scolaire 2012-2013. Le recours à une activité parascolaire axée sur le sport pour favoriser l’engagement de l’élève s’est avéré en partie efficace pour contrer ce phénomène, notamment en suscitant la qualité des liens sociaux entre tous les acteurs impliqués. Les auteurs présentent la stratégie élaborée en partenariat avec l’élève, les retombées de celle-ci et les améliorations souhaitées. Finalement, ils soulignent l’importance de l’implication des pairs, de la collaboration entre les enseignants, et de la capacité des praticiens à inspirer et à susciter du changement chez les élèves.
