6. Logic Locking based Trojans: A Friend Turns Foe

Abstract

Logic locking and hardware Trojans are two fields in hardware security that have been mostly developed independently from each other. In this paper, we identify the relationship between these two fields. We find that a common structure that exists in many logic locking techniques has desirable properties of hardware Trojans (HWT). We then construct a novel type of HWT, called Trojans based on Logic Locking (TroLL), in a way that can evade state-of-the-art ATPG-based HWT detection techniques. In an effort to detect TroLL, we propose customization of existing state-of-the-art ATPG-based HWT detection approaches as well as adapting the SAT-based attacks on logic locking to HWT detection. In our experiments, we use random sampling as reference. It is shown that the customized ATPG-based approaches are the best performing but only offer limited improvement over random sampling. Moreover, their efficacy also diminishes as TroLL's triggers become longer, i.e., have more bits specified). Abstract

Young Black men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV evidence the lowest rates of linkage to care and viral suppression of all US MSM. Kentucky, identified by the US Department of Health and Human Services as a "hot spot" state with elevated HIV incidence compared to the rest of the country, exhibits similar racialized outcomes. Structural, interpersonal, and individual drivers of engagement along the HIV care continuum among people living with HIV have been identified, primarily through quantitative designs. However, the mechanisms by which these factors shape HIV care engagement, and the ways they may combine or reinforce each other, as well as from the lived experience of young Black MSM living with HIV, have been studied to a lesser extent. In this study, a purposive sample of n = 29 HIV-positive young Black MSM (age M = 25 years old; 38% retained in care) residing in Kentucky participated in in-depth interviews. Factors that were most influential on engagement varied along the continuum, with health insurance status and knowledge of HIV being relatively more influential to diagnosis, and housing stability, psychological processes, and interpersonal relationships being more influential on retention. For some participants, barriers to care at multiple levels had a mutually influencing and intensifying impact on care engagement. Additional efforts to center the voices of young Black MSM living with HIV will help illuminate acceptable and sustainable interventions for increasing their care engagement and narrowing persistent racial disparities in HIV morbidity and mortality.

Abstract

An unresolved problem of present generation coupled climate models is the realistic distribution of rainfall over Indian monsoon region, which is also related to the persistent dry bias over Indian land mass. Therefore, quantitative prediction of the intensity of rainfall events has remained a challenge for the state-of-the-art global coupled models. Guided by the observation, it is hypothesized that insufficient growth of cloud droplets and processes responsible for the cloud to rain water conversion are key components to distinguish between shallow to convective clouds. The new diffusional growth rates and relative dispersion based autoconversion from the Eulerian-Lagrangian particleby-particle based small-scale model provide a pathway to revisit the parameterizations in climate models for monsoon clouds. The realistic information of cloud drop size distribution is incorporated in the microphysical parameterization scheme of climate model. Two sensitivity simulations are conducted using coupled forecast system (CFSv2) model. When our physically based small-scale derived modified parameterization is used, a coupled climate model simulates the probability distribution (PDF) of rainfall and accompanying specific humidity, liquid water content, and outgoing long-wave radiation (OLR) with increasing accuracy. The improved simulation of rainfall PDF appears to have been aided by much improved simulation of OLR and resulted better simulation of the ISM rainfall.

12. DynaMarks: Defending Against Deep Learning Model Extraction Using Dynamic Watermarking

Abstract

The functionality of a deep learning (DL) model can be stolen via model extraction where an attacker obtains a surrogate model by utilizing the responses from a prediction API of the original model. In this work, we propose a novel watermarking technique called DynaMarks to protect the intellectual property (IP) of DL models against such model extraction attacks in a black-box setting. Unlike existing approaches, DynaMarks does not alter the training process of the original model but rather embeds watermark into a surrogate model by dynamically changing the output responses from the original model prediction API based on certain secret parameters at inference runtime. The experimental outcomes on Fashion MNIST, CIFAR-10, and ImageNet datasets demonstrate the efficacy of DynaMarks scheme to watermark surrogate models while preserving the accuracies of the original models deployed in edge devices. In addition, we also perform experiments to evaluate the robustness of DynaMarks against various watermark removal strategies, thus allowing a DL model owner to reliably prove model ownership., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

14. Mental health among lesbian, gay, bisexual and other non-heterosexual adults in United States prisons

Abstract

We aim to expand existing evidence regarding relationships between sexual orientation and mental health among adults incarcerated in U.S. prisons, especially the differences within the LGB + population (i.e., lesbian or gay, bisexual, another orientation). We used Poisson regression models with robust variance to estimate prevalence ratios for mental health indicators (including illness and care) by sexual orientation using 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates study data (N = 24,848). Of these, 7.4% identified as LGB+. Lesbian or gay, and bisexual adults had a higher prevalence of two or more diagnoses, depressive disorder, anxiety, PTSD and manic disorder compared to straight adults. Identifying with another sexual orientation compared to straight was associated with a higher prevalence of two or more diagnoses, anxiety, PTSD and manic disorder. Similarly, bisexual adults compared to straight had a higher prevalence of prior mental health hospitalization, taking prescription medicines at the time of arrest and since arrest, and using professional mental health help since arrest. Further, lesbian or gay adults, and those identifying with another sexual orientation had a higher prevalence of prior mental health hospitalization, taking prescription medicines and professional mental health help since arrest compared to straight adults. Our results indicate diversity in mental illness and related health care use within the LGB + population and disparities between the LGB + and non-LGB + groups. 19. The use of non-invasive fibrosis markers in stratification care pathways for the management of chronic liver disease

Abstract

The health, societal and economic consequences of chronic liver disease (CLD) are substantial and increasing exponentially. Cirrhosis is typically detected in the latter stages when prognosis is poor. Timely diagnosis is hindered by reliance on non-discriminatory tests for fibrosis. I explored the role of non-invasive tests (NITs) of liver fibrosis in primary care to promote earlier disease detection. In this thesis, a systematic review revealed a paucity of published studies evaluating NIT in the community setting. A national survey demonstrated that UK specialists consider current fibrosis assessment methods to be sub-optimal, and NIT are important in improving disease stratification in primary care. To benchmark standard care, a one-year retrospective study of GP referrals for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) established 93% of referrals to have non-significant fibrosis (Brunt ≤ F2) as assessed by liver specialists. Over two-thirds had a low-risk FIB-4 (< 1.30) and could have avoided referral, although a quarter of patients with indeterminate FIB-4 (1.30 - 3.25) had significant liver fibrosis suggesting patients in this subgroup warrant further evaluation. As part of the Camden and Islington liver working group, I developed and evaluated a NAFLD pathway that employs FIB-4 and ELF to identify patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis (Brunt ≥ F3 fibrosis). The pathway processed nearly 1500 patients over two years, resulting in a reduction in the proportion of total patients referred and an 81% decrease in referral of patients with non-significant fibrosis. The pathway achieved a 5-fold increase in the referral of patients with advanced fibrosis and 3-fold increase in the detection of liver cirrhosis. To further extrapolate these findings, I developed a probabilistic decision analytical model which tested FIB-4, ELF and fibroscan, either alone or in combination in primary care pathways. Cost consequence analyses revealed all strategies to be clinically effective and cost-saving compared to standard care.

22. Robust and Attack Resilient Logic Locking with a High Application-Level Impact

Abstract

Logic locking is a hardware security technique to intellectual property (IP) against security threats in the IC supply chain, especially untrusted fabs. Such techniques incorporate additional locking circuitry within an IC that induces incorrect functionality when an incorrect key is provided. The amount of error induced is known as the effectiveness of the locking technique. "SAT attacks" provide a strong mathematical formulation to find the correct key of locked circuits. In order to achieve high SAT resilience(i.e. complexity of SAT attacks), many conventional logic locking schemes fail to inject sufficient error into the circuit. For example, in the case of SARLock and Anti-SAT, there are usually very few (or only one) input minterms that cause any error at the circuit output. The state-of-the-art stripped functionality logic locking (SFLL) technique introduced a trade-off between SAT resilience and effectiveness. In this work, we prove that such a trade-off is universal in logic locking. In order to attain high effectiveness of locking without compromising SAT resilience, we propose a novel logic locking scheme, called Strong Anti-SAT (SAS). In addition to SAT attacks, removal-based attacks are also popular against logic locking. Based on SAS, we propose Robust SAS (RSAS) which is resilient to removal attacks and maintains the same SAT resilience and as effectiveness as SAS. SAS and RSAS have the following significant improvements over existing techniques. (1) SAT resilience of SAS and RSAS against SAT attack is not compromised by increase in effectiveness. (2) In contrast to prior work focusing solely on the circuit-level locking impact, we integrate SAS-locked modules into a processor and show that SAS has a high application-level impact. (3) Our experiments show that SAS and RSAS exhibit better SAT resilience than SFLL and have similar effectiveness.

Abstract

Integrated circuits (ICs) are the foundation of all computing systems. They comprise high-value hardware intellectual property (IP) that are at risk of piracy, reverse-engineering, and modifications while making their way through the geographically-distributed IC supply chain. On the frontier of hardware security are various design-for-trust techniques that claim to protect designs from untrusted entities across the design flow. Logic locking is one technique that promises protection from the gamut of threats in IC manufacturing. In this work, we perform a critical review of logic locking techniques in the literature, and expose several shortcomings. Taking inspiration from other cybersecurity competitions, we devise a community-led benchmarking exercise to address the evaluation deficiencies. In reflecting on this process, we shed new light on deficiencies in evaluation of logic locking and reveal important future directions. The lessons learned can guide future endeavors in other areas of hardware security.

47. In-situ Stochastic Training of MTJ Crossbar based Neural Networks

Abstract

Owing to high device density, scalability and non-volatility, Magnetic Tunnel Junction-based crossbars have garnered significant interest for implementing the weights of an artificial neural network. The existence of only two stable states in MTJs implies a high overhead of obtaining optimal binary weights in software. We illustrate that the inherent parallelism in the crossbar structure makes it highly appropriate for in-situ training, wherein the network is taught directly on the hardware. It leads to significantly smaller training overhead as the training time is independent of the size of the network, while also circumventing the effects of alternate current paths in the crossbar and accounting for manufacturing variations in the device. We show how the stochastic switching characteristics of MTJs can be leveraged to perform probabilistic weight updates using the gradient descent algorithm. We describe how the update operations can be performed on crossbars both with and without access transistors and perform simulations on them to demonstrate the effectiveness of our techniques. The results reveal that stochastically trained MTJ-crossbar NNs achieve a classification accuracy nearly same as that of real-valued-weight networks trained in software and exhibit immunity to device variations., Comment: Accepted for poster presentation in the 2018 ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Low Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED)

Abstract

Stochastic computing, a form of computation with probabilities, presents an alternative to conventional arithmetic units. Magnetic Tunnel Junctions (MTJs), which exhibit probabilistic switching, have been explored as Stochastic Number Generators (SNGs). We provide a perspective of the energy requirements of such an application and design an energy-efficient and data-sensitive MTJ-based SNG.
