The geoconservation policies assumed by the Sicilian Region (Italy) induced to classify as geosites all the geodiversity preserved in the Sicilian natural reserves. In particular, two of these geosites present in the oriented natural reserve of the coastal lagoon of Cape Peloro (Messina, NE Sicily, Italy), denoted "Morpho–tectonic system of Cape Peloro–Lake Faro" and "Morpho–tectonic system of Cape Peloro–Lake Ganzirri", were considered Global areal geosites on the base of their tectonic origin. Lacking an official scientific report of these sites, the present research was aimed to investigate the lagoon, in order to provide the (i) geological and structural framework, (ii) inventory, and (iii) quantitative assessment of geodiversity. The study geosites resulted to be originated during the post–Wurmian sea–level rise and the strong extensional tectonics affecting the Calabria–Peloritani Arc still active. Indeed, the lagoon depression hosting the Lakes Faro and Ganzirri, developed on low-relief coasts because of different systems of capable faults, NW–SE oriented in the Lake Faro and ENE–WSW oriented in the Lake Ganzirri. The quantitative assessment of geodiversity indicated high scores for the scientific value and the potential educational and touristic uses. On the basis of these results, it was possible to confirm the attribution of Lake Faro's and Lake Ganzirri's geodiversity to Global areal geosites, being the study morpho-structures key localities, providing indicators of representativeness, geological diversity, and rarity that ought to be protected as clear and unequivocal examples of the Earth's geological history and evolution of the Quaternary tectonic coastal lagoons. Actual criticisms that could irreversibly affect the environmental equilibria have been evidenced. Possible actions for the redevelopment of the oriented natural reserve of the coastal lagoon of Cape Peloro and the extension of the geosites were also described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Forensic Geology, color examination of sediments and soils is one of the first analyses for exclusionary/comparative purposes. Forensic colorimetry deals with the examination of the color of physical evidence related to criminal investigations. Color of soils and sediments has always been considered an essential parameter and one of the most common and crucial visually physical property for characterizing, describing, and comparing these geological materials, since the first steps of forensic investigations. This parameter may be evaluated both qualitatively and quantitative. In forensic comparative analyses of sediments and soils, most of the colorimetric methods are nowadays computational. These computational instruments, provided of standards and standardized illumination conditions, may obtain very high-resolution and non-destructive quantitative data. When adapted to sedimentological applications for forensic purposes, photometric instrumentations are powerful tools due to their low purchase and maintenance costs. Moreover, some devises are also portable and easily used at the crime scene. Recent advances in the colorimetry research showed as also the simple use of digital devises, such as low-cost flatbed scanners, may be easily applied for the color examination of acquired color images of sediments and soils, if calibrated with standards, as reference charts or database. The results of a simulated forensic casework devoted to the comparative analysis of the color of soils, acquired by means low-cost flatbed scanner, confirmed previous results on this useful application. As it is often said, diamonds are forever. Lives, however, are not. At the hands of rebels, dictators, and terrorists, diamonds have crystallized into a source of financing for conflict and civil wars, which not only caused the deaths of more than two million people, but also mutilations and atrocious suffering for the sake of "conflict" diamonds. By briefly describing the attempts made by the international communities and governments to fight against the illicit trafficking of diamonds, this article wants to summarize the issue of "conflict" diamonds, discuss the role of the Kimberley Process, and summarize the vulnerability of this complex issue. In the current criminalistic scenario, experts face many challenges, including huge amounts of data, lack of time, tiny pieces of evidence, chaotic and complex crime scenes, complicated and time-consuming procedures, inadequate laboratory structures, and sometimes insufficient knowledge, which may lead to failure of investigation or to expire the periods of prescription. This paper briefly overviews the added value in the Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation scenario of some key geoscientific disciplines applied to forensic fields, such as geochemistry, geophysics, geopedology, sedimentology, remote sensing, and mineralogy. The radiological quality of drinking water is directly associated with the health of the population. Indeed, it is well known that the presence of radionuclides in drinking water constitutes a health risk for humans because the consumption of such water increases the likelihood of incurring cancer. For this reason, all the studies aimed at developing new methodologies for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the radioisotopic composition of drinking water are absolutely desired by the international scientific community, as well as by the institutes that deal with the protection of public health. In this paper, a new methodological approach was developed for the evaluation of the 238U content in drinking water. A sample coming from Paola, Calabria region, southern Italy, was taken as a case study. The assessment was performed by using High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry, with the aim of quantifying the specific activity of the 234mPa radioisotope after a preconcentration procedure, and thus to assess the activity concentration of 238U, in the hypothesis of the secular radioactive equilibrium between it and its daughter. The obtained results were validated through the comparison with the 238U (µg/L) concentration as measured with Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
