This article analyzes the Fox Sports 1 sports debate program Speak for Yourself. The article analyzes the thematic frames the show utilizes to espouse and reinforce sport as a site of conservative value-making and male bonding. In using an interracial male pairing of Colin Cowherd and Jason Whitlock, the show mimics similarly popular debate programs on rival network ESPN, such as Pardon the Interruption and First Take. However, Whitlock in particular advances a unique brand of Black conservatism, and his clashes with progressive activists and other black guests represent intraracial tensions among Black sport media members. AbstractBackgroundMethodsResultsConclusionsA previous study explored how restrictions on gambling advertising, known as the ‘whistle-to-whistle’ (W2W) ban, were associated with changes in television advertising around live football broadcasts in the United Kingdom. This study explores changes around other live sports broadcasts, and other programming, in the years before and after the W2W ban.TV scheduling (Concise Media) and gambling advertising data (Nielsen Media) between 1 September and 1 December in the pre (2018) and post-W2W ban (2019) periods were used. Linear regression models assessed changes in the frequency of advertising during sports (football, horse racing, other), and other television programming (documentaries, drama, entertainment, film, leisure, music, news, other).Results corroborate previous findings; the W2W ban was associated with a decrease in gambling advertising around live football (2.9 advertisements per-program; p < .001) and other live sports (0.8 advertisements per-program; p < .001), except horse racing where advertising increased (2.5 advertisements per-program; p < .001). There were small changes in advertising around other types of programming during the same years.Voluntary partial gambling advertising restrictions were associated with a reduction in television advertising across all live sports, except horse racing where advertising increased. There were small changes across the rest of the UK TV network. Understanding the magnitude of reductions on gambling behavior is complex since advertisements were not eliminated post-W2W ban period. Increased advertising around live horse racing programs might also mitigate the effects. Subjective vitality is an important, yet understudied, indicator of eudaimonic well-being. People experience subjective vitality when they engage in need-satisfying activities. We investigate two sport consumption activities (stadium attendance and sport television viewing), team identification, and subjective vitality to understand how sport consumption mediates the impact of team identification on subjective vitality. Throughout a season, data were collected from local residents (n = 618) living within the franchise area of a Japanese professional baseball team. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping mediation analysis showed that team identification exerted both a direct and an indirect effect via attendance frequency on subjective vitality. The proposed model and the findings offer new theoretical insights into the roles of subjective vitality, team identification, and stadium attendance in spectator sport. Consequently, sport teams can leverage these insights to intensify consumer experiences when people attend games, positively contributing to their well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is commonly accepted that sports media and televised football in particular are sites where ideas about race/ethnicity are (re)produced. However, less is known about how audiences deal with these messages: do they assume these ideas are true or do they negotiate them and if so, how? Using cultural studies as our theoretical framework, we conducted 14 focus groups among Spanish youth and asked them to reflect on ideas about race/ethnicity while talking about football. Results show that interviewees had difficulty in talking about race/ethnicity and that they not only reproduced dominant discourses about race/ethnicity but also negotiated other discourses. Research question: In this study, we add to the slowly emerging literature on modeling the demand for women's sports by exploring the robustness of the determinants for women's volleyball – previously a largely neglected team sport – across three different distribution channels, i.e. online streaming, TV broadcasts, and the stadium experience. Research methods: We exploit a data set containing information on consumer interest in the German Women's Volleyball League (VBL) in 2019. In line with the literature on modeling consumer interest in sports, we estimate on-/offline audiences and spectator demand, in terms of semi-elasticity, by Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regressions. Results: We find that volleyball demand is relatively stable across two of the three distribution channels (i.e. online streaming and TV broadcasts) and, to a lesser degree, the stadium experience. This pattern is particularly problematic for a niche sport's online streaming offerings that, often initiated with high hopes, seem to attract only a fraction of the otherwise relatively strong consumer interest in the sport's TV offerings. Implications: While we believe that future research is well-advised to add nuance to the analysis of (women's) sports demand across different distribution channels, our results also suggest that sporting bodies should carefully weigh the pros and cons of an exclusively online distribution strategy. Diffusion of innovation theory considers the knowledge of innovation as the essential stage of the innovation-adoption decision. Thus, it is necessary to obtain information about the public knowledge of innovation and unveil its determinants. This study examines the relevant predictors of audience DTT knowledge in Indonesia. We analyze a large sample of respondents disaggregated by basic socioeconomic characteristics to provide a more detailed insight concerning audience DTT knowledge. The statistical summary shows that most respondents had limited familiarity with DTT. In addition, the econometric results indicate that audience gender, age, education, monthly household income, online video subscription, and participation in the DTT campaign are relevant predictors of DTT knowledge. Moreover, the results suggest other significant variables to raise DTT knowledge among subsamples of females (Talkshow and Direct-to-home TV) and those at the lower level of education (Sports and Direct-to-home TV) and income (Sports and Talkshow). The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games was broadcast for the first time on free to air (FTA) television across 49 territories in Sub-Saharan Africa. This article charts the story of this historic development and marks the first study to explore Paralympic broadcast production beyond the cultural specificities of Global North/Western-centric media practices, infrastructure availability and disability discourses. Drawing on an integrated qualitative dataset, including interviews with key individuals from the International Paralympic Committee, TV Media Sport (the broadcast partner) and one national Sub-Saharan broadcaster (Malawi Broadcasting Corporation), this article documents the challenges, logic and politics behind the Sub-Saharan African Paralympic broadcast. In so doing, we consider the extent to which these articulated with epistemic differences, underlying neocolonial sentiments and (mis-)understandings of the geopolitical contours and disability politics of the Sub-Saharan African region. We consider the important role national Paralympic broadcasters may play in the sustainable development of the broadcasts across this region, particularly in relation to its pedagogical value for harnessing progressive localised disability politics, disability activism, and social justice. Despite televised sports being a non-fiction event, the gap that separates a sporting event's live unfolding from its televisual transmission ensures that it has all the aesthetic dynamism of a dramatic series. This essay argues that the sense of liveness that undergirds a televised sports broadcast operates on the side of the viewing subject rather in the object itself. It is the psyche that makes sport live—not the broadcast. This essay looks to Freudian and Lacanian concepts and ideas from television studies to concretize its theoretical intervention. The Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso (2020–23) presents a utopian vision of English football, which embodies both the positive and negative connotations inherent to utopian storytelling in entertainment and sports fiction more specifically. Using the example of a Premier League club, Ted Lasso presents an escapist and feel-good narrative, promoting values such as empathy, kindness and community to overcome personal challenges, something that was particularly valuable for many viewers during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, it neglects structural and institutional shortcomings in English football, such as sportswashing, racism and homophobia, while sharing financial interests with the Premier League and thus running the risk of absolving it of some of its shortcomings. This article examines the role of media in shaping public perception of athletes and the complex interactions between media, athletes, and the audience. It emphasizes the need to recognize athletes' humanity and individuality beyond their sport and discusses the impact of financial issues on media representations. The article concludes by calling for readers to challenge media narratives and promote more equitable and inclusive coverage of sports. Black local television sports journalists throughout the United States were surveyed to discover how they view both their perceived place in the newsroom and media treatment of, and their own interactions with, Black athletes. The majority say that Black athletes are negatively stereotyped and that, as Black journalists, they have an easier time relating to and telling the story of the Black athlete. Using a thematic analysis of the open-ended comments, the authors found perspective, realization of racism, discriminatory hiring practices, and emotional labor to be common themes. Findings from this mixed methods study point to their belief that hiring more Black television sports journalists could improve coverage of Black athletes, but there are doubts that those job opportunities exist. When discussing their own experiences, the Black television sports journalists said there is some "tokenism" within television station hiring practices that makes it difficult for many of them to be hired. The World Cup is among the most popular televised sport events. This case study examined how enjoyment from and transportation into World Cup broadcasts affected WhatsApp use on a second screen. The authors hypothesized a negative correlation between World Cup enjoyment and WhatsApp use (both match related and unrelated), mediated by transportation into the match. Based on an online survey of 454 participants, they found that the more enjoyment the viewers experienced, the less they used WhatsApp for non-match-related purposes and (contrary to their hypothesis) the more they used it for match-related purposes. It was also found that the more enjoyment viewers experienced, the more transported they were into the match, leading to higher match-related and lower non-match-related WhatsApp use. Brazilian television's efforts to reduce gender inequality in sports journalism are well known. Since 2021, women have been taking on roles that were previously exclusive to men, such as narrating soccer matches. This article starts from the hypothesis that printed newspapers are going against the trend seen in sports television journalism. To achieve the objectives, 1,184 publications from the sports sections of the country's three main newspapers - O Globo, Folha de S. Paulo and Estado de S. Paulo - were analyzed in July 2020 and July 2021. Of the total number of signed texts, 86.7% were written by men and only 13.3% by women. An even greater asymmetry was recorded in the photojournalism of these sections. Women published 7.9% of the photos compared to 92.1% by men. To help interpret the data, two in-depth interviews were conducted with women journalists from the sports sections of these media outlets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On June 12th 2019, in the middle of the UK Conservative party's leadership contest, journalist Marie le Conte tweeted 'so this is my first proper leadership contest as an actual Westminster person and honestly it's such a hoot...huge fan of the drama'. This tweet is exemplary of a wider phenomenon. Politics is the activity through which power and resources are allocated across society – who gets what, when and how. Politics, and what it does to all of our lives, is consequential. Yet, despite this, many of those who pay the most attention to politics do so from the position of a fan, engaging with it in the way that others engage with entertainment forms like sport and television shows. Previous studies have paid attention to the fandoms and anti-fandoms that develop around individual politicians and movements – in other words, they maintain a focus on the behaviours and actions of these fans of politics. By contrast, in this paper we explore the construction of politics itself as an object of fandom, asking what happens to politics when it is treated in this way. The activity of politics can be socially constructed by humans to serve some purpose. Thus, who does the constructing and how they do this, affects what it becomes. The authors demonstrate that betting market outcomes are a statistically significant and economically relevant driver of local market television viewership in the National Basketball Association. Ratings are higher when the local market team covers the point spread and when point spread outcome uncertainty is increased. They further illustrate that point spread market outcomes have a larger relative impact on viewership in less-popular games and when the local market team is expected to perform poorly. This suggests wagering market access serves as insurance to the league and its franchises against reduced viewership in games that are less appealing to consumers. The article presents the discussion on European Sport Economics Association (ESEA) establishing the Peter Sloane Award (PSA) in 2019. Topics include analytical approach in which football teams maximize playing success subject to minimum losses has had continued support in the literature; and evaluating the proposals to provide a recommendation as to who should receive the award.

Within the sociocultural context of China, this study applies a textual analysis to the coverage of Paralympic champions on China Central Television's sports channel from 2008 to 2019. Three discursive themes through which Paralympic champions are portrayed are identified. When viewing Paralympic sports through the lens of social model and critical perspectives, the portrayal of para-athletes as national heroes represents Paralympic champions as a commendable group that contributes to the establishment of the national identity and reputation, while the supercrip portrayal of these champions as superhumans connects them to non-disabled society. Their depiction as self-reliant figures establishes a role model for retired athletes in the Chinese context, meanwhile also advocating a logic of independence from state-sponsored welfare across divergent fields related to disability. Thus, disabled persons are incorporated into discursive systems directed by the state, media, and society in the interactions among politics, social norms, and the economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article will consider the uses and significance of the past in the recent British sports film. One of the most commercially successful of all sports films, I Chariots of Fire i (1981), is sometimes used as a convenient exemplar of British cinema's fixation with the past, yet the gap between the film's production and its historical contexts (the 1924 Olympic Games) precludes the appeal to nostalgia in the same sense as I Rush i , I The Damned United i or I The Rack Pack i . One of the film's more restrictive choices is, in turn, to focus less on Clough and Taylor's shrewd investments in the player market - such as their tendency to pick up ageing players, or buy under-valued players and play them in different positions - and more on Clough's charismatic form of player-management. This study primarily focuses on the scale at which PTV Sports are adopting advance broadcasting technologies, and whether the management at PTV Sports are technologically conscious or not. In this research, it is analyzed that PTV Sports which has an incredible history, as it is associated to PTV that has achieved great feats in sports broadcasting in this region, why it is not able to incorporate modern broadcasting technologies the way it should have. Qualitative research method is applied in which in-depth interviews are conducted from a total of twelve experts, that are television sports broadcasters, sports journalists and transmission engineers from the PTV, PTV Sports and private television channels in Pakistan. Among these twelve, six are from PTV and PTV Sports, and the remaining six are associated to private television channels, keeping in view the prerequisites of this study. The communication theories of Diffusion of Innovation and Technological Determinism are applied to examine the data collected during this study. The outcome obtained after the data interpretation from the answers of interviewees suggest that the traditional mindset is not a major reason for PTV Sports not adopting advance broadcasting technologies, as it is corruption that has brought PTV to this disastrous stage the results of which are clearly visible in PTV Sports.
