Abstract: Sport, one of the important leitmotivs of modernity, is in centre of the national identities construction. In Brazil it is not different, and there are several examples of the relationship between sport and the construction of identities, especially after the second half of last (short) century. In this paper are presented some aspects of the construction of the national identity through sport, studying the imaginary concerning four Brazilian “national heroes”: the soccer player Pelé, the chess player Mequinho, the driver Ayrton Senna and the tennis player Gustavo Kuerten. For so much we have selected and analysed reports, chronicles and headlines of Brazilians daily newspapers and weekly magazines in several periods between 1970 and 2000. The results suggest important differences in the construction of each one of the “heroes”: Pelé as the black people's representative in a racist country; Mequinho as “the brain of nation”; Senna as the man who dominates the machine; Kuerten represents, however, the image of a “good boy” of fair play. These “heroes” and their mythological images, in spite of their contradictions, seem to be reconciled in the social imaginary that represents Brazilian identity also in other social fields beyond sports.

- Abstract
The work is based on an interpretation of heroism and its specific forms in comparison with the possible heroism of sports. The first part discusses the definition of heroism and then we acquaint with selected concepts of heroism (Campbell's conception, interpretation of literary myths, Christian heroism, Carlyle's interpretation of heroism and Boorstin's "Graphical Revolution"). The second part follows in critical perspectives of the possibility of sports heroism (Zdebska, Jirásek, Robertson, Sheler, and Hyland). In the results appear the syntheses of these two parts, which appraise the possibilities of the athletes as heroes. We notice mainly the fact that the potential sports hero is missing many aspects of classical heroes. In addition of that, most of mentioned Critics claim that sporting events is out of real world and it is a sort of theater with no real ties to the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A multiple Olympic champion and pioneer of long-distance running in Finland, Hannes Kolehmainen migrated to the United States after having triumphed at the 1912 Stockholm games. In spite of his working-class credentials that had led to tension prior to Stockhom, the Finnish bourgeois sport authorities adopted him as their hero and literally bought him back from America in the 1920s, soon after Finland had gained independence. Subsequently, a number of prominent observers and scholars have claimed that Kolehmainen's running prowess not only brought the Finnish people together but also contributed to Finland's quest for independence. This essay takes a critical look at the hegemonic understanding of Kolehmainen's athletic achievements, tracing the evolution of a reluctant hero into a malleable one. Interestingly, the mythical notion that Kolehmainen ‘ran Finland on to the world map' became widespread under circumstances that posed an existential threat to Finland decades after the 1912 games. SOCIOLOGY of sports , *IDENTITY (Philosophical concept) , *INDIVIDUALITY , *ATHLETES , *TOUR de France (Bicycle race) - Abstract
In his autobiography, It's Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life, Lance Armstrong claimed that his identity as a human being is not defined simply in terms of his skill at racing a bicycle. Armstrong's articulation of multiple, competing identifications is consistent with a postmodern notion of fractured, incomplete identity. However, following Butler, identity can be seen as contested, negotiated, and often hegemonic. Drawing from the emerging field of cyborgology, and the work of Birrell and McDonald, the authors construct a parallel cyborg "counternarrative" alongside the popular Armstrong story. By interrogating Armstrong's story through the lens of cyborg theory, the authors will explore and articulate alternative meanings/readings of Armstrong's narrative of self as represented in his book and, finally, suggest that Armstrong's story can be read as an exemplar of the postmodern cyborg sporting hero. SPORTS , *ETHNICITY , *SPORTS participation , *RURAL geography ,URBAN ecology (Sociology) - Abstract
Compared to modern sport, that is to say the highly standaridized Olympic disciplines that are practiced in many parts of the world, traditional sports and games tend to be confined to a limited geographical area and are often referred to as 'national' or 'local'. They are often regarded as symbols of ethnic or regional identity and are therefore called 'fold games'. Although these traditional sports and games are at the origin of almost all modern sports, they are too often treated as the Cinderellas of modern sports. Their participants may be local heroes, but the cultural stereotype of these 'folk-gamesters' is that of an elderly rustic working-class male. To test this popular belief, the social profile was studied of the participants in 30 different traditional games in Flanders, Belgium. The data available in the Flemish Folk Games File in Leuven were analysed according to age, sex, socioprofessional status and degree of urganization of the dwelling area. The results show a variegated picture, the profiles varying strongly from one traditional game to another. They show nevertheless that the above mentioned stereotype is confirmed for three out of the four assumptions. These participants are indeed elderly, lower-class males, but they stem from an urban environment rather than from the rural milieu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes to discuss, through an individual case study of four athletes, the mechanisms used by the Uruguayan sports press in the discursive construction of national soccer heroes and villains in the 2010-2014 period. The article begins with a theoretically founded introduction to the processes of media construction of sports heroes and their importance in the socialization process individuals go through in any given society. Afterwards, a brief case study of the selected athletes is developed in light of this theoretical framework, focusing on the mechanisms used for discursively constructing heroes and their transformations into villains. Finally, the selected cases are summarized, underlying the media atribution of certain values and features considered socially desirable by Uruguayan society.

- Abstract
This PhD thesis makes a radiography of a new problem for a society where the presence of minorities is a reality. Before the communism, Romania had an important number of minorities, and their athletes contributed to the development of sport, having a strong identity and local pride. In communism, the stars coming from the minorities (national or ethnical) had another statute. I propose an interdisciplinary study and I utilize concepts from history, sociology, human geography or anthropology.
