In the city of Amsterdam commercial transport is responsible for 15% of vehicles, 34% of traffic’s CO2 emissions and 62% of NOx emissions. The City of Amsterdam plans to improve traffic flows using real time traffic data and data about loading and unloading zones. In this paper, we present, reflect, and discuss the results of two projects from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences with research partners from 2016 till 2018. The ITSLOG and Sailor projects aim to analyze and test the benefits and challenges of connecting ITS and traffic management to urban freight transport, by using real-time data about loading and unloading zone availability for rerouting trucks. New technologies were developed and tested in collaboration with local authorities, transport companies and a food retailer. This paper presents and discusses the opportunities and challenges faced in developing and implementing this new technology, as well as the role played by different stakeholders. In both projects, the human factor was critical for the implementation of new technologies in practice.

1. Een Urban Consolidation Centre (UCC) maakt het mogelijk om de stad zero-emissie te beleveren en zorgt ervoor dat goederen gebundeld de stad in gaan. Met als doel het minder belasten van klimaat, gezondheid van mensen en leefbaarheid van de stad. 2. Het UCC is een multimodaal overslagpunt, geschikt voor een variëteit aan voertuigen. Consolidatie van stromen is belangrijk 3. Duidelijkheid over toekomstige zero-emissie-zones in steden is belangrijk om stappen te kunnen nemen. Een UCC bevindt zich niet ver buiten de rand van de zero-emissiezone, bij voorkeur op een bedrijventerrein.

In the Netherlands, the automobile manufacturer Nissan has initiated a unique project to stimulate the uptake of electric vehicles (EV) for commercial usage. This project is called “Power to Amsterdam” and started by the end of 2014. In the project, Nissan has enabled entrepreneurs in the region of Amsterdam to drive the full electric e-NV200 for a period of 6 to 12 months. After this period, the participants can decide whether to purchase/lease the vehicle or to return it to Nissan. The e-NV200 can be used for passengers (max. 7 persons) and as van (loading space of 4,2 m3). The aim of the project is to increase the experience with EV. This is important from both a public (i.e. decrease air and noise pollution) and private perspective (increase EV sales) as well as to enhance knowledge in this field.
