Hintergrund Eine Amotio retinae ist ein ophthalmologischer Notfall. Verzögerung der Diagnose oder Therapie kann die Visusprognose reduzieren. Diese Arbeit untersucht, ob die Corona-Pandemie Auswirkungen auf die Versorgung von Patienten mit Netzhautablösung hatte. Methodik Für diese Studie wurden 60 Patienten mit im Zeitraum 15.03.–05.05.2020 in der Augenklinik des Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf operativ versorgter rhegmatogener Netzhautablösung retrospektiv eingeschlossen. Als Vergleichszeitraum wurde der entsprechende Vorjahreszeitraum gewählt. Signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den Vergleichsgruppen wurden mittels Hypothesentests untersucht. Ergebnisse Im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum zeigten sich während der Corona-Pandemie keine signifikanten Unterschiede von Geschlecht, Alter, Symptomdauer, vorherigem Arztbesuch, präoperativem Visus, Makulabeteiligung, Amotioausdehnung, Vorhandensein von proliferativer vitreoretinaler Retinopathie (PVR), Operationsverfahren oder Operationsdauer. Während der Corona-Pandemie gaben 29 % der befragten Patienten mit Amotio retinae generelle Sorgen um ihre Gesundheit aufgrund des Coronavirus SARS-CoV‑2 an. Diskussion Während der Corona-Pandemie zeigte sich eine unveränderte Versorgung von Patienten mit Amotio retinae. Im Gegensatz zu anderen medizinischen Notfällen zeigte sich keine reduzierte Fallzahl oder erhöhte Morbidität im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum.

A growing number of studies seek to evaluate the impact of school closures during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While most studies reported severe learning losses in students, some studies found positive effects of school closures on academic performance. However, it is still unclear which factors contribute to the differential effects observed in these studies. In this article, we examine the impact of assignment strategies for problem sets on the academic performance of students (n 16,000 from grades 4-10 who calculated 170,000 problem sets) in an online learning environment for mathematics, during the first and second period of pandemic-related school closures in Germany. We observed that, if teachers repeatedly assigned single problem sets (i.e., a small chunk of on average eight mathematical problems) to their class, students’ performance increased significantly during both periods of school closures compared to the same periods in the previous year (without school closures). In contrast, our analyses also indicated that, if teachers assigned bundles of problem sets (i.e., large chunks) or when students self-selected problem sets, students’ performance did not increase significantly. Moreover, students’ performance was generally higher when single problem sets were assigned, compared to the other two assignment types. We conclude that teachers’ way of using the online learning environment in general, and their strategy of assigning problem sets in particular can have a positive effect on students’ performance in mathematics

Moving into montane rainforests was a unique behavioural innovation developed by Pleistocene Homo sapiens as they expanded out of Africa and through Southeast Asia and Sahul for the first time. However, faunal sequences from these environments that shed light on past hunting practices are rare. In this paper we assess zooarchaeological evidence from Yuku and Kiowa, two sites that span that Pleistocene to Holocene boundary in the New Guinea Highlands. We present new AMS radiocarbon dates and a revision of the stratigraphic sequences for these sites, and examine millennial scale changes to vertebrate faunal composition based on NISP, MNI, and linear morphometric data to shed light on variability in hunting practices, processes of natural cave deposition, and the local palaeoenvironment at the end of the LGM through to the Late Holocene. We show that Yuku was first occupied at least c. 17,500 years ago and that Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene hunters targeted a wide range of small-bodied and agile species from the mid-montane forest, with a particular focus on cuscus (Phalanger spp.). At Kiowa, occupied from around 12,000 years ago, a similar range of species were targeted, but with an added emphasis on specialised Dobsonia magna fruit bat hunting. We then integrate other zooarchaeological data from the wider Highlands zone to build a model of generalist-specialist hunting dynamics and examine how this more broadly contributes to our understanding of tropical foraging during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene.

Purpose: To report the effects of a single intravitreous injection of bevacizumab for the treatment of secondary choroideal neovascularisation due to large optic disc drusen. Methods: A 14-year-old female patient with painless loss of vision in one eye presented with unusually large optic disc drusen and juxtapapillary choroidal neovascularisation with subretinal hemorrhage. She was treated with a single intravitreous injection of bevacizumab. Results: Visual acuity increased from 20/100 to 20/25 within 4 weeks after injection and remained at this level during the 12-month follow-up period.
