Context. Recent evidences from spectroscopic surveys point towards the presence of a metal-poor, young stellar population in the chemical thin disk. In this context, the investigation of the spatial distribution and time evolution of precise, unbiased abundances is fundamental to disentangle the scenarios of evolution of the Galaxy. Aims. We study the evolution of abundance gradients in the Milky Way by taking advantage of a large sample of open clusters, which are among the best tracers for this purpose. In particular, we use data from the last release of the Gaia-ESO survey. Methods. We perform careful selection of open cluster stars excluding those that may be affected by biases in spectral analysis. The cleaned open clusters sample is compared with detailed chemical evolution models for the Milky Way, using well tested stellar yields and prescription for radial migration. Different scenarios of Galaxy evolution are tested to explain the data, i.e. the two-infall and the three-infall frameworks, suggesting that the chemical thin disk is formed by one or two subsequent gas accretion episodes, respectively. Massive stars are one of the most important and investigated astrophysical production sites of $^{26}$Al, a short-lived radioisotope with $\sim$ 1 Myr half-life. Its short lifetime prevents us from observing its complete chemical history, and only the $^{26}$Al that was recently produced by massive stars can be observed. Hence, it is considered a tracer of star formation rate (SFR). However, important contributions to $^{26}$Al comes from nova systems that pollute the interstellar medium with a large delay, thus partly erasing the correlation between $^{26}$Al and SFR. In this work we describe the 2D distribution of the mass of $^{26}$Al as well as that of massive stars and nova systems in the Milky Way, to investigate their relative contributions to the production of $^{26}$Al. We use a detailed 2D chemical evolution model where the SFR is azimuthally dependent and is required to reproduce the spiral arm pattern observed in the Milky Way. We test two different models, one where the $^{26}$Al comes from massive stars and novae, and one with massive stars only. We then compare the predictions to the $\sim$ 2 M$_{\odot}$ of $^{26}$Al mass observed by the surveys COMPTEL and INTEGRAL. The results show that novae do not trace SFR and, in the solar vicinity, they concentrate in its minima. The effect of novae on the map of the $^{26}$Al mass consists in damping the spiral pattern by a factor of five. Regarding the nucleosynthesis, we find that $\sim$75% of the $^{26}$Al is produced by novae and the $\sim$25% by massive stars. We conclude that novae cannot be neglected as $^{26}$Al producers since the observations can only be reproduced by including their contribution. Moreover, we suggest that bulge novae should eject around six times more material than the disc ones to well reproduce the observed mass of $^{26}$Al., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to A&A

Open clusters are ideal tools for tracing the abundances of different elements because their stars are expected to have the same age, distance, and metallicity. Therefore, they serve as very powerful tracers for investigating the cosmic origins of elements. This paper expands on a recent study by us, where the element Fluorine was studied in seven previously open clusters, adding six open clusters as well as eight field stars. The primary objective is to determine the abundance of fluorine (F) to gain insight into its production and evolution. The magnesium (Mg) abundances were derived to categorize the field stars into high and low alpha disk populations. Additionally, cerium (Ce) abundances are determined to better understand the interplay between F and s-process elements. The spectra were obtained from the high-resolution near-infra-red GIANO-B instrument at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). For the derivation of the stellar parameters and abundances, the Python version of Spectroscopy Made Easy (PySME) was used. OH, CN, and CO molecular lines and band heads along with Fe I lines were used to determine the stellar parameters in the H-band region. Two HF lines in the K-band ({\lambda}{\lambda} 2.28, 2.33 {\mu}m), three K-band Mg I lines ({\lambda}{\lambda} 2.10, 2.11, 2.15 {\mu}m), and two Ce II lines in the H-band ({\lambda}{\lambda} 1.66, and 1.71 {\mu}m) were used to derive the abundances of F, Mg, and Ce, respectively. F, Mg, and Ce abundances were derived for 14 stars from 6 OCs, as well as 8 field stars. The F and Ce abundances were investigated as a function of metallicity, age, and Galactocentric distances. The age, evolution, and chemical properties of the Galactic disk can be effectively ascertained using open clusters. Within the large program Stellar Populations Astrophysics at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, we specifically focused on stars in open clusters, to investigate various astrophysical topics, from the chemical content of very young systems to the abundance patterns of lesser studied intermediate-age and old open clusters. We investigate the astrophysically interesting element fluorine (F), which has an uncertain and intriguing cosmic origin. We also determine the abundance of cerium (Ce), as F abundance is expected to correlate with the s-process elements. High-resolution near-infrared spectra were obtained using the GIANO-B spectrograph. The Python version of Spectroscopy Made Easy (PySME), was used to derive atmospheric parameters and abundances. The stellar parameters were determined using OH, CN, and CO molecular lines along with Fe I lines. This paper presents the first F Galactic radial abundance gradient. Our results are also compared with literature estimates and with Galactic chemical evolution models that have been generated using different F production channels. Our results indicate a constant, solar pattern in the [F/Fe] ratios across clusters of different ages, supporting the latest findings that fluorine levels do not exhibit any secondary behavior for stars with solar or above-solar metallicity. By comparing our sample stars with the predictions of Galactic chemical evolution models, we came to the conclusion that both asymptotic giant branch stars and massive stars, including a fraction of fast rotators that increase with decreasing metallicity, are needed to explain the cosmic origin of F., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, Accepted by A&A

The diagram depicting the abundance ratios [Mg/Mn] vs. [Al/Fe] has gained attention in recent literature as a valuable tool for exploring fundamental aspects of the evolution of the Milky Way and the Local Group. In particular, this combination of elements is supposed to be highly sensitive to the star formation history (SFH), unveiled by the imprints left on those abundances. Unfortunately, a complete discussion on the uncertainties associated is still missing, making it difficult to know how reliable the associated results are. In this paper we analyze, by means of detailed chemical evolution models, the nuclear uncertainties of Mg, Al, Mn and Fe to show how different yields can affect the trends in the [Mg/Mn] vs. [Al/Fe] plane. In fact, if different yield assumptions produce conflicting results, then the [Mg/Mn] vs. [Al/Fe] diagram does not represent a strong diagnostic for the SFH of a galaxy. We discuss the results on the [Mg/Mn] vs. [Al/Fe] diagram, as predicted by several Milky Way (MW) and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) chemical evolution models adopting different nucleosynthesis prescriptions. The results show that the literature yields require some corrective factors to reproduce the APOGEE DR17 abundances of Mg, Al and Mn in the MW and that the same factors can also improve the results for the LMC. In particular, we show that by modifying the massive stars yields of Mg and Al the behaviour of the [Mg/Mn] vs. [Al/Fe] plot changes substantially. In conclusion, by changing the yields within their error bars, one obtains trends which differ strongly, making it difficult to draw any reliable conclusion on the SFH of galaxies. The relative enrichment of s-process to $\alpha$-elements ([s/$\alpha$]) has been linked with age, providing a potentially useful avenue in exploring the Milky Way's chemical evolution. However, the age--[s/$\alpha$] relationship is non-universal, with dependencies on metallicity and current location in the Galaxy. In this work, we examine these chemical clock tracers across birth radii ($\rm \text{R}_\text{birth}$), recovering the inherent trends between the variables. We derive $\rm \text{R}_\text{birth}$ and explore the [s/$\alpha$]--age--$\rm \text{R}_\text{birth}$ relationship for 36,652 APOGEE DR17 red giant and 24,467 GALAH DR3 main sequence turnoff and subgiant branch disk stars using [Ce/Mg], [Ba/Mg], and [Y/Mg]. We discover that the age--[s/Mg] relation is strongly dependent on birth location in the Milky Way, with stars born in the inner disk having the weakest correlation. This is congruent with the Galaxy's initially weak, negative [s/Mg] radial gradient, which becomes positive and steep with time. We show that the non-universal relations of chemical clocks is caused by their fundamental trends with $\rm \text{R}_\text{birth}$ over time, and suggest that the tight age--[s/Mg] relation obtained with solar-like stars is due to similar $\rm \text{R}_\text{birth}$ for a given age. We introduce a new, multi-zone chemical evolution model of the DustPedia galaxy M74, calibrated by means of MCMC methods. We take into account the observed stellar and gas density profiles and use Bayesian analysis to constrain two fundamental parameters characterising the gas accretion and star formation timescale, i.e. the infall timescale tau and the SF efficiency nu, respectively, as a function of galactocentric radius R. Our analysis supports an infall timescale increasing with R and a star formation efficiency decreasing with R, thus supporting an 'Inside-Out' formation for M74. For both tau and nu, we find a weaker radial dependence than in the Milky Way. We also investigate the dust content of M74, comparing the observed dust density profile with the results of our chemical evolution models. Various prescriptions have been considered for two key parameters, i.e. the typical dust accretion timescale and the mass of gas cleared out of the dust by a supernova remnant, regulating the dust growth and destruction rate, respectively. Two models with a different current balance between destruction and accretion, i.e. with equilibrium and dominion of accretion over destruction, can equally reproduce the observed dust profile of M74. This outlines the degeneracy between these parameters in shaping the interstellar dust content in galaxies. Short-lived radionuclides, such as 26Al and 60Fe, are tracers of star formation. Therefore, their abundances can unravel the recent star formation history of the host galaxy. In view of future gamma-ray surveys, we predict the masses and fluxes of these two elements in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using new chemical evolution models. Our best model reproduces the abundance patterns of alpha/Fe ratios, the gas mass, the average metallicity, the present time supernova and nova rates observed in LMC. We show three main results: i) the best model for the LMC suggests a star formation rate very mild at the beginning with a recent burst, and a Salpeter-like initial mass function. ii) The predicted mass of 26Al is 0.33 M_Sun, 2/3 produced by massive stars and 1/3 by novae. iii) The predicted mass of 60Fe is 0.44 M_Sun, entirely produced by massive stars. This result suggests a larger fraction of 60Fe, at variance with the Milky Way. The explanation for this lies in the adopted initial mass function, that for the LMC contains more massive stars than for the Milky Way. These predictions can be useful for the COSI-SMEX mission planned for launch in 2027. The expected gamma-ray line fluxes for the 1.809 MeV line of 26Al and the 1.173 and 1.332 MeV lines of 60Fe are in the range of (0.2-2.7)x10^-6 ph cm^-2 s^-1 and (0.7-2.8)x10^-7 ph cm^-2 s^-1, respectively. We study the abundance patterns and the radial gradients of s-process elements (Y, Zr, Ba, La and Ce), r-process elements (Eu) and mixed-process elements (Mo, Nd and Pr) in the Galactic thin disc by means of a detailed two-infall chemical evolution model for the Milky Way with state-of-the-art nucleosynthesis prescriptions. We consider r-process nucleosynthesis from merging neutron stars (MNS), magneto-rotational supernovae (MR-SNe) and s-process synthesis from low- and intermediate- mass stars (LIMS) and rotating massive stars. The predictions of our model are compared with data from the sixth data release of the Gaia-ESO survey, from which we consider 62 open clusters with age > 0.1 Gyr and 1300 Milky Way disc field stars. We conclude that: i) the [Eu/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] is reproduced by both a prompt and a delayed source, but the quick source completely dominates the Eu production; ii) rotation in massive stars contribute substantially to the s-process elements of the first peak, but MNS and MR-SNe are necessary in order to reproduce the observations; iii) due to the adopted yields, our model overpredicts Pr and underpredicts Nd, while the [Mo/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] is nicely reproduced. For the radial gradients, we conclude that: i) our predicted slope of the [Fe/H] gradient is in agreement with the one observed in open clusters by Gaia-ESO and other high-resolution spectroscopic surveys. ii) The predicted slope of the [Eu/H] radial gradient is steeper than the observed one, independently on how quick the production of Eu is. We discuss the possible causes of this discrepancy in terms of both different Galaxy formation scenarios and stellar radial migration effects. iii) For all the elements belonging to the second s-process peak (Ba, La, Ce) as well as for Pr, we predict a plateau at low Galactocentric distances, which is probably due to the enhanced enrichment from LIMS in the inner regions., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. This is the first of a series of papers that will introduce a user-friendly, detailed, and modular GALactic Chemical Evolution Model, GalCEM, that tracks isotope masses as a function of time in a given galaxy. The list of tracked isotopes automatically adapts to the complete set provided by the input yields. The present iteration of GalCEM tracks 86 elements broken down in 451 isotopes. The prescription includes massive stars, low-to-intermediate mass stars, and Type Ia supernovae as enrichment channels. We have developed a preprocessing tool that extracts multi-dimensional interpolation curves from the input yield tables. These interpolation curves improve the computation speeds of the full convolution integrals, which are computed for each isotope and for each enrichment channel. We map the integrand quantities onto consistent array grids in order to perform the numerical integration at each time step. The differential equation is solved with a fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. We constrain our analysis to the evolution of all the light and intermediate elements from carbon to zinc, and lithium. Our results are consistent up to the extremely metal poor regime with Galactic abundances. We provide tools to track the mass rate change of individual isotopes on a typical spiral galaxy with a final baryonic mass of $5\times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$. Future iterations of the work will extend to the full periodic table by including the enrichment from neutron-capture channels as well as spatially-dependent treatments of galaxy properties. We study the evolution of Milky Way thick and thin discs in the light of the most recent observational data. In particular, we analyze abundance gradients of O, N, Fe and Mg along the thin disc as well as the [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relations and the metallicity distribution functions at different Galactocentric distances. We run several models starting from the two-infall paradigm, assuming that the thick and thin discs formed by means of two different infall episodes, and we explore several physical parameters, such as radial gas flows, variable efficiency of star formation, different times for the maximum infall onto the disc, different distributions of the total surface mass density of the thick disc and enriched gas infall. Our best model suggests that radial gas flows and variable efficiency of star formation should be acting together with the inside-out mechanism for the thin disc formation. The timescale for maximum infall onto the thin disc, which determines the gap between the formation of the two discs, should be $t_{max}\simeq 3.25$ Gyr. The thick disc should have an exponential, small scale length density profile and gas infall on the inner thin disc should be enriched. We compute also the evolution of Gaia-Enceladus system and study the effects of possible interactions with the thick and thin discs. We conclude that the gas lost by Enceladus or even part of it could have been responsible for the formation of the thick disc but not the thin disc., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables. We investigate the evolution of the abundance of fluorine in the Milky Way thick and thin discs by means of detailed chemical evolution models compared with recent observational data. The chemical evolution models adopted here have already been shown to fit the observed abundance patterns of CNO and $\alpha$-elements as well as the metallicity distribution functions for the Galactic thick and thin disc stars. We apply them here to the study of the origin and evolution of fluorine, which is still a matter of debate. First, we study the importance of the various sites proposed for the production of fluorine. Then, we apply the reference models to follow the evolution of the two different Galactic components. We conclude that rotating massive stars are important producers of F and they can set a plateau in F abundance below [Fe/H]=-0.5 dex, though its existence for [Fe/H]<-1 has yet to be confimed by extensive observations of halo stars. In order to reproduce the F abundance increase in the discs at late times, instead, a contribution from lower mass stars - single asymptotic giant branch stars and/or novae - is required. The dichotomy between the thick and thin discs is more evident in the [F/O] vs. [O/H] plot than in the [F/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] one, and we confirm that the thick disc has evolved much faster than the thin disc, in agreement with findings from the abundance patterns of other chemical elements., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. The trends of chemical abundances and abundance ratios observed in stars of different ages, kinematics, and metallicities bear the imprints of several physical processes that concur to shape the host galaxy properties. By inspecting these trends, we get precious information on stellar nucleosynthesis, the stellar mass spectrum, the timescale of structure formation, the efficiency of star formation, as well as any inward or outward flows of gas. In this paper, we analyse recent determinations of carbon-to-iron and carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratios in different environments (the Milky Way and elliptical galaxies) using our latest chemical evolution models that implement up-to-date stellar yields and rely on the tight constraints provided by asteroseismic stellar ages (whenever available). A scenario where most carbon is produced by rotating massive stars, with yields largely dependent on the metallicity of the parent proto-star clouds, allows us to fit simultaneously the high-quality data available for the local Galactic components (thick and thin discs) and for microlensed dwarf stars in the Galactic bulge, as well as the abundance ratios inferred for massive elliptical galaxies. The cosmic origin of fluorine is still not well constrained. Several nucleosynthetic channels at different phases of stellar evolution have been suggested, but these must be constrained by observations. For this, the fluorine abundance trend with metallicity spanning a wide range is required. Our aim is to determine stellar abundances of fluorine for -1.1<[Fe/H]<+0.4. We determine the abundances from HF lines in infrared K-band spectra (at 2.3 microns) of cool giants, observed with the IGRINS and Phoenix high-resolution spectrographs. We derive accurate stellar parameters for all our observed K giants, which is important since the HF lines are very temperature sensitive. We find that [F/Fe] is flat as a function of metallicity at [F/Fe]~0, but increases as the metallicity increases. The fluorine slope shows a clear secondary behavior in this metallicity range. We also find that the [F/Ce] ratio is relatively flat for -0.6<[Fe/H]<0, and that for two metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-0.8), s-process element enhanced giants, we do not detect an elevated fluorine abundance. We interpret all these observational constraints to indicate that several major processes are at play for the cosmic budget of fluorine over time; from those in massive stars at low metallicities, through the asymptotic giant branch-star contribution at -0.6<[Fe/H]<0, to processes with increasing yields with metallicity at super-solar metallicities. The origins of the latter, and whether or not Wolf-Rayet stars and/or novae could contribute at super-solar metallicities, is currently not known. To quantify these observational results, theoretical modelling is required. Since the onset of the `space revolution' of high-precision high-cadence photometry, asteroseismology has been demonstrated as a powerful tool for informing Galactic archaeology investigations. The launch of the NASA TESS mission has enabled seismic-based inferences to go full sky -- providing a clear advantage for large ensemble studies of the different Milky Way components. Here we demonstrate its potential for investigating the Galaxy by carrying out the first asteroseismic ensemble study of red giant stars observed by TESS. We use a sample of 25 stars for which we measure their global asteroseimic observables and estimate their fundamental stellar properties, such as radius, mass, and age. Significant improvements are seen in the uncertainties of our estimates when combining seismic observables from TESS with astrometric measurements from the Gaia mission compared to when the seismology and astrometry are applied separately. Specifically, when combined we show that stellar radii can be determined to a precision of a few percent, masses to 5-10% and ages to the 20% level. In this work, we study the formation and chemical evolution of the Galactic bulge with particular focus on the abundance pattern ([Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H]), metallicity and age distribution functions. We consider detailed chemical evolution models for the Galactic bulge and inner disc, with the aim of shedding light on the connection between these components and the origin of bulge stars. In particular, we first present a model assuming a fast and intense star formation, with the majority of bulge stars forming on a timescale less than 1 Gyr. Then we analyze the possibility of two distinct stellar populations in the bulge, as suggested by Gaia-ESO and APOGEE data. These two populations, one metal poor and the other metal rich, can have had two different origins: i) the metal rich formed after a stop of roughly 250 Myr in the star formation rate of the bulge, or ii) the metal rich population is made of stars formed in the inner disc and brought into the bulge by the early secular evolution of the bar. We also examine the case of multiple star bursts in the bulge with consequent formation of multiple populations, as suggested by studies of microlensed stars. After comparing model results and observations, we suggest that the most likely scenario is that there are two main stellar populations, both made mainly by old stars (> 10 Gyr), with the metal rich and younger one formed from inner thin disc stars, in agreement with kinematical arguments. However, on the basis of dynamical simulations, we cannot completely exclude that the second population formed after a stop in the star formation during the bulge evolution, so that all the stars formed in situ., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present the first chemical evolution model for Enceladus, alias the Gaia Sausage, to investigate the star formation history of one of the most massive satellites accreted by the Milky Way during a major merger event. Our best chemical evolution model for Enceladus nicely fits the observed stellar [$\alpha$/Fe]-[Fe/H] chemical abundance trends, and reproduces the observed stellar metallicity distribution function, by assuming low star formation efficiency, fast infall time scale, and mild outflow intensity. We predict a median age for Enceladus stars $12.33^{+0.92}_{-1.36}$ Gyr, and - at the time of the merger with our Galaxy ($\approx10$ Gyr ago from Helmi et al.) - we predict for Enceladus a total stellar mass $M_{\star} \approx 5 \times 10^{9}\,\text{M}_{\odot}$. By looking at the predictions of our best model, we discuss that merger events between the Galaxy and systems like Enceladus may have inhibited the gas accretion onto the Galaxy disc at high redshifts, heating up the gas in the halo. This scenario could explain the extended period of quenching in the star formation activity of our Galaxy about 10 Gyr ago, which is predicted by Milky Way chemical evolution models, in order to reproduce the observed bimodality in [$\alpha$/Fe]-[Fe/H] between thick- and thin-disc stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We will discuss some highlights concerning the chemical evolution of our Galaxy, the Milky Way. First we will describe the main ingredients necessary to build a model for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. Then we will illustrate some Milky Way models which includes detailed stellar nucleosynthesis and compute the evolution of a large number of chemical elements, including C, N, O, $\alpha$-elements, Fe and heavier. The main observables and in particular the chemical abundances in stars and gas will be considered. We present a theoretical method for solving the chemical evolution of galaxies, by assuming an instantaneous recycling approximation for chemical elements restored by massive stars and the Delay Time Distribution formalism for the delayed chemical enrichment by Type Ia Supernovae. The galaxy gas mass assembly history, together with the assumed stellar yields and initial mass function, represent the starting point of this method. We derive a simple and general equation which closely relates the Laplace transforms of the galaxy gas accretion history and star formation history, which can be used to simplify the problem of retrieving these quantities in the galaxy evolution models assuming a linear Schmidt-Kennicutt law. We find that - once the galaxy star formation history has been reconstructed from our assumptions - the differential equation for the evolution of the chemical element $X$ can be suitably solved with classical methods. We apply our model to reproduce the [O/Fe] and [Si/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] chemical abundance patterns as observed at the solar neighborhood, by assuming a decaying exponential infall rate of gas and different delay time distributions for Type Ia Supernovae; we also explore the effect of assuming a nonlinear Schmidt-Kennicutt law, with the index of the power law being $k=1.4$. Although approximate, we conclude that our model with the single degenerate scenario for Type Ia Supernovae provides the best agreement with the observed set of data. Our method can be used by other complementary galaxy stellar population synthesis models to predict also the chemical evolution of galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. The thick disk rotation--metallicity correlation, \partial V_\phi/\partial[Fe/H] =40\div 50 km s^{-1}dex^{-1} represents an important signature of the formation processes of the galactic disk. We use nondissipative numerical simulations to follow the evolution of a Milky Way (MW)-like disk to verify if secular dynamical processes can account for this correlation in the old thick disk stellar population. We followed the evolution of an ancient disk population represented by 10 million particles whose chemical abundances were assigned by assuming a cosmologically plausible radial metallicity gradient with lower metallicity in the inner regions, as expected for the 10-Gyr-old MW. Essentially, inner disk stars move towards the outer regions and populate layers located at higher |z|. A rotation--metallicity correlation appears, which well resembles the behaviour observed in our Galaxy at a galactocentric distance between 8 kpc and 10 kpc. In particular,we measure a correlation of \partial V_\phi/\partial[Fe/H]\simeq 60 km s^{-1}dex^{-1} for particles at 1.5 kpc < |z| < 2.0 kpc that persists up to 6 Gyr. Our pure N-body models can account for the V_\phi vs. [Fe/H] correlation observed in the thick disk of our Galaxy, suggesting that processes internal to the disk such as heating and radial migration play a role in the formation of this old stellar component. In this scenario, the positive rotation-metallicity correlation of the old thick disk population would represent the relic signature of an ancient "inverse" chemical (radial) gradient in the inner Galaxy, which resulted from accretion of primordial gas., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics
