Search

The Hubble Deep Field (HDF) is a region in the sky that provides one of the deepest multi-wavelength views of the distant universe and has led to the detection of thousands of galaxies seen throughout cosmic time. An early map of the HDF at a wavelength of 850 microns that is sensitive to dust emission powered by star formation revealed the brightest source in the field, dubbed HDF850.1. For more than a decade, this source remained elusive and, despite significant efforts, no counterpart at shorter wavelengths, and thus no redshift, size or mass, could be identified. Here we report, using a millimeter wave molecular line scan, an unambiguous redshift determination for HDF850.1 of z=5.183. This places HDF850.1 in a galaxy overdensity at z~5.2 in the HDF, corresponding to a cosmic age of only 1.1 Gyr after the Big Bang. This redshift is significantly higher than earlier estimates and higher than most of the >100 sub-millimeter bright galaxies identified to date. The source has a star formation rate of 850 M_sun/yr and is spatially resolved on scales of 5 kpc, with an implied dynamical mass of ~1.3x10^11 M_sun, a significant fraction of which is present in the form of molecular gas. We use ultra-deep ultraviolet VLT/VIMOS intermediate-band and VLT/FORS1 narrow-band imaging in the GOODS Southern field to derive limits on the distribution of the escape fraction (f_esc) of ionizing radiation for L >~ L*(z=3) Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at redshift 3.4--4.5. Only one LBG, at redshift z=3.795, is detected in its Lyman continuum (LyC; S/N~5.5), the highest redshift galaxy currently known with a direct detection. Its ultraviolet morphology is quite compact (R_eff=0.8, kpc physical). Three out of seven AGN are also detected in their LyC, including one at redshift z=3.951 and z850 = 26.1. From stacked data (LBGs) we set an upper limit to the average f_esc in the range 5%--20%, depending on the how the data are selected (e.g., by magnitude and/or redshift). We undertake extensive Monte Carlo simulations that take into account intergalactic attenuation, stellar population synthesis models, dust extinction and photometric noise in order to explore the moments of the distribution of the escaping radiation. Various distributions (exponential, log-normal and Gaussian) are explored. We find that the median f_esc is lower than ~6% with an 84% percentile limit not larger than 20%. If this result remains valid for fainter LBGs down to current observational limits, then the LBG population might be not sufficient to account for the entire photoionization budget at the redshifts considered here, with the exact details dependent upon the assumed ionizing background and QSO contribution thereto. It is possible that f_esc depends on the UV luminosity of the galaxies, with fainter galaxies having higher f_esc, and estimates of f_esc from a sample of faint LBG from the HUDF (i775<28.5) are in broad quantitative agreement with such a scenario., Comment: 58 pages, 23 figures; submitted to ApJ, revised version in response to referee's comments

We present the serendipitous discovery of z=4.05 molecular gas CO emission lines with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer coincident with GN20 and GN20.2, two luminous submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North field (GOODS-N). These are among the most distant submillimeter-selected galaxies reliably identified through CO emission and also some of the most luminous known. In terms of CO to bolometric luminosities, stellar mass and star formation rates (SFRs), these newly discovered z>4 SMGs are similar to z~1.5-3 SMGs studied to date. These z~4 SMGs have much higher specific SFRs than typical B-band dropout Lyman break galaxies at the same redshift. The stellar mass-SFR correlation for normal galaxies does not seem to evolve much further, between z~2 and z~4. A significant z=4.05 spectroscopic redshift spike is observed in GOODS-N, and a strong spatial overdensity of B-band dropouts and IRAC selected z>3.5 galaxies appears to be centered on the GN20 and GN20.2 galaxies. This suggests a proto-cluster structure with total mass ~10^14 Msun. Using photometry at mid-IR, submm and radio wavelengths, we show that reliable photometric redshifts (Dz/(1+z)~0.1) can be derived for SMGs over 13.5 starbursts, regardless of their submm/mm emission [abridged]., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures. We report the discovery of XMMXCS J2215.9-1738, a massive galaxy cluster at z =1.45, which was found in the XMM Cluster Survey. The cluster candidate was initially identified as an extended X-ray source in archival XMM data. Optical spectroscopy shows that 6 galaxies within a 60 arcsec diameter region lie at z = 1.45 +/- 0.01. Model fits to the X-ray spectra of the extended emission yield kT = 7.4 (+2.7,-1.8) keV (90 % confidence); if there is an undetected central X-ray point source then kT = 6.5 (+2.6,-1.8) keV. The bolometric X-ray luminosity is Lx = 4.4 (+0.8,-0.6) x 10^44 ergs/s over a 2 Mpc radial region. The measured Tx, which is the highest known for a cluster at z > 1, suggests that this cluster is relatively massive for such a high redshift. We present results from the Hubble Higher-z Supernova Search, the first space-based open field survey for supernovae (SNe). In cooperation with the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, we have used the Hubble Space Telescope with the Advanced Camera for Surveys to cover 300 square arcmin in the area of the Chandra Deep Field South and the Hubble Deep Field North on five separate search epochs (separated by 45 day intervals) to a limiting magnitude of z'=26. These deep observations have allowed us to discover 42 SNe in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1.6. As these data span a large range in redshift, they are ideal for testing the validity of Type Ia supernova progenitor models with the distribution of expected ``delay times,'' from progenitor star formation to SN Ia explosion, and the SN rates these models predict. Through a Bayesian maximum likelihood test, we determine which delay-time models best reproduce the redshift distribution of SNe Ia discovered in this survey. We find that models that require a large fraction of ``prompt'' (less than 2 Gyr) SNe Ia poorly reproduce the observed redshift distribution and are rejected at 95% confidence. The Lyman-alpha emitters found at z ~ 4.5 by the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey have high equivalent widths in the Lyman-alpha line, which can be produced by either narrow-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or by stellar populations with a very high proportion of young, massive stars. To investigate the AGN scenario, we obtained two deep Chandra exposures to study the X-ray nature of the Lyman-alpha emitters. The 172 ks deep Chandra image on the LALA Bootes field was presented in a previous paper (Malhotra et al. 2003), and in this paper we present a new Chandra deep exposure (174 ks) on the LALA Cetus field, which doubled our sample of X-ray imaged Lyman-alpha sources, and imaged the brightest source among our Lyman-alpha emitters. None of the 101 Lyman-alpha sources covered by two Chandra exposures was detected individually in X-ray, with a 3 sigma limiting X-ray flux of F_{0.5-10.0 keV} < 3.3 x 10^{-16} ergs/cm^2/s for on-axis targets. The sources remain undetectable in the stacked image, implying a 3 sigma limit to the average luminosity of L_{2-8keV} < 2.8 x 10^{42} ergs/s. The resulting X-ray to Lyman-alpha ratio is > 21 times lower than the ratios for known high redshift type-II quasars. We report early results on galaxies at z~6, selected from Hubble Space Telescope imaging for the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey. Spectroscopy of one object with the Advanced Camera for Surveys grism and from the Keck and VLT observatories a shows a strong continuum break and asymmetric line emission, identified as Lya at z=5.83. We detect only five spatially extended, z~6 candidates with signal-to-noise ratios > 10, two of which have spectroscopic confirmation. This is many fewer than would be expected if galaxies at z=6 had the same luminosity function as those at z=3. There are many fainter candidates, but we expect substantial contamination from foreground interlopers and spurious detections. Our best estimates favor a z=6 galaxy population with fainter luminosities, higher space density, and similar co-moving ultraviolet emissivity to that at z=3, but this depends critically on counts at fluxes fainter than those reliably probed by the current data., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters for the GOODS special issue. We have measured the rest--frame lambda~1500 Ang comoving specific luminosity density of star--forming galaxies at redshift 3.5

Deep spectroscopy of the two mJy radio galaxies LBDS 53W069 and 53W091 has previously shown them to have old (>3 Gyr) stellar populations at z=1.5. Here we present the results of HST observations of these galaxies. 53W069 has an r^1/4 profile in both the F814W & F110W data with an effective radius of 0.30 arcsec (2.7 kpc). The restframe U-B colour gradient requires a stellar population of super-solar (3Z_sun) metallicity that formed on a very short timescale at high redshift (z>5). 53W091 has a regular r^1/4 profile in F110W with an effective radius of 0.32 arcsec (2.9 kpc). The F814W profile is more extended and is consistent with a blue exponential disk that contributes 20% of the flux within r_e. The restframe U-B colour gradient is significantly larger than that observed in field ellipticals at z<1, implying a stellar population of mixed metallicity (1-3Z_sun) that formed in a high-redshift rapid burst. We have compared these two LBDS radio galaxies with the Kormendy relation of ten 3CR radio galaxies at z=0.8. The LBDS galaxies follow the same relation as the more radio-luminous 3CR galaxies, assuming passive evolution of their stellar populations, although they are smaller than the 3CR galaxies whose mean effective radius is 12 kpc. Their sizes and radio luminosities are consistent with scaling relations applied to the 3CR galaxies, in which both radio power and effective radius scale with galaxy mass. Compared with a sample of z=0.4 cluster ellipticals, 53W069 & 53W091 lie well within the scatter of the Kormendy relation. We conclude that the hosts of these mJy radio sources at z=1.5 are passively-evolving elliptical galaxies that will evolve into ordinary L* ellipticals by the present day. We present our discovery observations and analysis of RDCS1317+2911, z = 0.805, and RDCS1350+6007, z= 0.804, two clusters of galaxies identified through X-ray emission in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS). We find a temperature of 3.7 +1.5 -0.9 keV and a bolometric luminosity of 8.2e43 +1.7e43 -1.6e43 erg/s for RDCS1317+2911, and a temperature of 4.9 +1.3 -0.9 keV and a bolometric luminosity of 4.1e44 +0.5e44 -0.4e44 erg/s for RDCS1350+6007. Our weak lensing analysis of RDCS1350+6007 confirms the general shape of the inner density profile but predicts twice the mass of the model based on the X-ray profile. We combine the X-ray luminosities and temperatures for RDCS clusters of galaxies with such measurements of other clusters at high redshift (z>0.7) and fit the luminosity-temperature relation. We find no statistically significant evolution in the slope or zero-point of this relation at a median of z=0.83. This result is in agreement with models of intracluster medium evolution with significant pre-heating or high initial entropy values. We discuss how low temperature, high redshift clusters of galaxies will allow us to improve on this result and announce the discovery of two such objects, CXOU J0910.1+5419 and CXOU J1316.9+2914., Comment: 33 pages, Latex 2e using the AASTEX v5 macros, with 13 figures. We report the discovery of an X-ray luminous galaxy cluster at z =1.11. RDCS J0910+5422 was selected as an X-ray cluster candidate in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey on the basis of its spatial extent in a Rosat PSPC image. Deep optical and near-IR imaging reveal a red galaxy overdensity around the peak of the X-ray emission, with a significant excess of objects with J-K and I-K colors typical of elliptical galaxies at z ~ 1.0. Spectroscopic observations at the Keck II telescope secured 9 galaxy redshifts in the range 1.095=1.106. Eight of these galaxies lie within a 30 arcsec radius around the peak X-ray emission. A deep Chandra ACIS exposure on this field shows extended X-ray morphology and allows the X-ray spectrum of the intracluster medium to be measured. The cluster has a bolometric luminosity L_x = 2.48^{+0.33}_{-0.26} x 10^44 ergs/s, a temperature of kT = 7.2^{+2.2}_{-1.4} keV, and a mass within r = 1 Mpc of 7.0 x 10^14 M_sun (H_0=65 km/s/Mpc, Omega_m = 0.3, and Lambda = 0.7). The spatial distribution of the cluster members is elongated, which is not due to an observational selection effect, and followed by the X-ray morphology. The X-ray surface brightness profile and the spectrophotometric properties of the cluster members suggest that this is an example of a massive cluster in an advanced stage of formation with a hot ICM and an old galaxy population already in place at z > 1., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures: Figures 1,4,6 included as separate jpg files. We present a multi-wavelength study of RX J0848+4456, a cluster of galaxies discovered through X-ray emission in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey. Our observations consist of WFPC2 imaging, optical spectra, and X-ray data collected with the Chandra observatory. We find that RX J0848+4456 consists of an X-ray emitting cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z=0.570 and a group at slightly lower redshift, z=0.543, with little X-ray emission. This lower redshift system, however, is a gravitational lens, with the lensed galaxy an unusual AGN or star-forming system at z=3.356. The cluster has an X-ray temperature of kT = 3.6 +/- 0.4 keV, a bolometric luminosity of 1.0e44 +/- 0.3e44 erg/s and a velocity dispersion of 670 +/- 50 km/s. These values all agree with the low redshift correlations for clusters of galaxies, implying a relaxed system with the ICM in equilibrium with the dark matter potential. The lower redshift group of galaxies at z=0.543 has, at most 1/5, more likely 1/10, of the X-ray luminosity of RX J0848+4456. Despite being a gravitational lens, this is a low mass system, with an X-ray temperature of kT = 2.3 +0.5 -0.4 keV and a velocity dispersion of only 430 +/- 20 km/s. The Chandra X-ray Observatory was used to obtain a 190 ks image of three high redshift galaxy clusters in one observation. The results of our analysis of these data are reported for the two z > 1 clusters in this Lynx field, including the most distant known X-ray selected cluster. Spatially-extended X-ray emission was detected from both these clusters, indicating the presence of hot gas in their intracluster media. A fit to the X-ray spectrum of RX J0849+4452, at z=1.26, yields a temperature of kT = 5.8^{+2.8}_{-1.7} keV. Using this temperature and the assumption of an isothermal sphere, the total mass of RX J0849+4452 is found to be 4.0^{+2.4}_{-1.9} X 10^{14} h_{65}^{-1} M_{\sun} within r = 1 h_{65}^{-1} Mpc. The T_x for RX J0849+4452 approximately agrees with the expectation based on its L_{bol} = 3.3^{+0.9}_{-0.5} X 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1} according to the low redshift L_x - T_x relation. The very different distributions of X-ray emitting gas and of the red member galaxies in the two z > 1 clusters, in contrast to the similarity of the optical/IR colors of those galaxies, suggests that the early-type galaxies mostly formed before their host clusters., Comment: 4 pages in emulateapj style plus 2 color jpegs for Figure 3. We present 42 low-resolution spectra of Supernova (SN) 1993J, our complete collection from the Lick and Keck Observatories, from day 3 after explosion to day 2454, as well as one Keck high-dispersion spectrum from day 383. SN 1993J began as an apparent SN II, albeit an unusual one. After a few weeks, a dramatic transition took place, as prominent helium lines emerged in the spectrum. SN 1993J had metamorphosed from a SN II to a SN IIb. Nebular spectra of SN 1993J closely resemble those of SNe Ib and Ic, but with a persistent H_alpha line. At very late times, the H_alpha emission line dominated the spectrum, but with an unusual, box-like profile. Recent results on the incidence of red galaxies in a > 100 square arcminute field galaxy survey to K=20 and a K=22 survey of the Hubble Deep Field are presented. We argue that a simple photometric redshift indicator, based on J-K color and supported by spectroscopic results obtained with Keck, gives a reliable lower limit of ~25% for the fraction of z>1 galaxies in the 100 square arcminute survey. This fraction is substantially higher than found in previous smaller samples, and is at least as consistent with predictions for pure luminosity evolution as with those for hierarchical models. We present the discovery of a radio galaxy at a likely redshift of z = 4.424 in one of the flanking fields of the Hubble Deep Field. Radio observations with the VLA and MERLIN centered on the HDF yielded a complete sample of microjansky radio sources, of which about 20% have no optical counterpart to I < 25 mag. In this Letter, we address the possible nature of one of these sources, through deep HST NICMOS images in the F110W (J) and F160W (H) filters. VLA J123642+621331 has a single emission line at 6595-A, which we identify with Lyman-alpha at z = 4.424. We argue that this faint (H = 23.9 mag), compact (r = 0.2 arcsec), red (I - K = 2.0) object is most likely a dusty, star-forming galaxy with an embedded active nucleus., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters. 11 pages, 4 figures, uses aastex v5.0 and psfig

We have obtained near-infrared (1.6 micron) images of 11 powerful 3CR radio galaxies at redshifts 0.8 < z < 1.8 using NICMOS on board HST. The high angular resolution permits a detailed study of galaxy morphology in these systems at rest-frame optical wavelengths, where starlight dominates over the extended, aligned UV continuum. The NICMOS morphologies are mostly symmetric and are consistent with dynamically relaxed, elliptical host galaxies dominated by a red, mature stellar population. The aligned structures are sometimes faintly visible, and nuclear point sources may be present in a few cases which manifest the ``unveiled'' AGN that is obscured from view at optical wavelengths. Our observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the host galaxies of z ~ 1-2 radio galaxies are similar to modern-day gE galaxies. Cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been firmly established as one of the most powerful phenomena in the Universe, releasing electromagnetic energy approaching the rest-mass energy of a neutron star in a few seconds. The two currently popular models for GRB progenitors are the coalescence of two compact objects (such as neutron stars or black holes) or collapse of a massive star. An unavoidable consequence of the latter model is that a bright supernovae should accompany the GRB. The emission from this supernova competes with the much brighter afterglow produced by the relativistic shock that gives rise to the GRB itself. Here we present evidence for an unusual light curve for GRB 980326 based on new optical observations. The transient brightened ~3 weeks after the burst to a flux sixty times larger than that extrapolated from the rapid decay seen at early time. Furthermore, the spectrum changed dramatically and became extremely red. We argue that the new source is the underlying supernova. If our hypothesis is true then this would be the first evidence for a supernova connection with GRBs at cosmological distances. Near-infrared, sub-arcsecond seeing images obtained with the W. M. Keck I Telescope of show strong evolution at rest--frame optical} wavelengths in the morphologies of high redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) with 1.93, to much more compact and symmetrical shapes at z<3. The linear sizes (~10 kpc) and luminosities (M_B~-20 to -22) of the individual components in the z>3 HzRGs are similar to the total sizes and luminosities of normal, radio--quiet, star forming galaxies seen at z=3--4. `R'-band, 0.1 arcsec resolution images with the Hubble Space Telescope of one of these HzRGs, 4C41.17 at z=3.800, show that at rest--frame UV wavelengths the galaxy morphology breaks up in even smaller, ~1 kpc--sized components embedded in a large halo of low surface brightness emission. The brightest UV emission is from a radio--aligned, edge-brightened feature (4C41.17-North) downstream from a bright radio knot. A narrow--band Lyman-alpha image, also obtained with HST, shows an arc--shaped Lyman-alpha feature at this same location, suggestive of a strong jet/cloud collision. Deep spectropolarimetric observations with the W. M. Keck II Telescope of 4C41.17 show that the radio--aligned UV continuum is unpolarized. We present Hubble Space Telescope images of 11 high redshift radio galaxies (between $z=2.3$ and $z=3.6$). The galaxies were observed with the WFPC2 camera in a broad band filter (F606W or F707W, roughly equivalent to V or R-band), for 2 orbits each. We find that on the scale of the HST observations there is a wide variety of morphological structures of the hosting galaxies: most objects have a clumpy, irregular appearance, consisting of a bright nucleus and a number of smaller components, suggestive of merging systems. Some observed structures could be due (at least partly) to the presence of dust distributed through the galaxies. The UV continuum emission is generally elongated and aligned with the axis of the radio sources, however the characteristics of the ``alignment effect'' differ from case to case, suggesting that the phenomenon cannot be explained by a single physical mechanism. We compare the properties of our radio galaxies with those of the UV dropout galaxies and conclude that (i) the most massive radio galaxies may well evolve from an aggregate of UV dropout galaxies and (ii) high redshift radio galaxies probably evolve into present day brightest cluster galaxies., Comment: 22 pages, 30 figures, accepted by A&A

We present Keck LRIS spectroscopy along with NICMOS F110W (~J) and F160W (~H) images of the galaxy HDF4-473.0 (hereafter 4-473) in the Hubble Deep Field, with a detection of an emission line consistent with Ly-alpha at a redshift of z=5.60. Attention to this object as a high redshift galaxy was first drawn by Lanzetta, Yahil and Fernandez-Soto and appeared in their initial list of galaxies with redshifts estimated from the WFPC2 HDF photometry. It was selected by us for spectroscopic observation, along with others in the Hubble Deep Field, on the basis of the NICMOS F110W and F160W and WFPC2 photometry. For H_0 = 65 and q_0 = 0.125, use of simple evolutionary models along with the F814W (~I), F110W, and F160W magnitudes allow us to estimate the star formation rate (~13 M(solar)/yr). The colors suggest a reddening of E(B-V) ~ 0.06. The measured flux in the Ly-alpha line is approximately 1.0*10^(-17) ergs/cm/s and the restframe equivalent width, correcting for the absorption caused by intervening HI, is approximately 90AA. The galaxy is compact and regular, but resolved, with an observed FWHM of ~0.44". Simple evolutionary models can accurately reproduce the colors and these models predict the Ly-alpha flux to within a factor of 2. We present new Keck observations of giant arcs in the cluster Abell 2390. High resolution two-dimensional spectra of two arcs show metal lines at z=4.040 +/- 0.005 with Lyman-alpha emission spatially separated from the stellar continuum. In addition, spectroscopy along the notorious `straight' arc reveals two unrelated galaxies, at z=0.913 and z=1.033, with absorption lines of MgII and FeII at z=0.913 seen against the more distant object, indicating the presence of a large gaseous halo., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. We have discovered a population of extremely red galaxies at $z\simeq 1.5$ which have apparent stellar ages of $\gs 3$ Gyr, based on detailed spectroscopy in the rest-frame ultraviolet. In order for galaxies to have existed at the high collapse redshifts indicated by these ages, there must be a minimum level of power in the density fluctuation spectrum on galaxy scales. This paper compares the required power with that inferred from other high-redshift populations. If the collapse redshifts for the old red galaxies are in the range $z_c\simeq 6$ -- 8, there is general agreement between the various tracers on the required inhomogeneity on 1-Mpc scales. This level of small-scale power requires the Lyman-limit galaxies to be approximately $\nu\simeq 3.0$ fluctuations, implying a very large bias parameter $b\simeq 6$. The high collapse redshifts of the red galaxies as deduced from gravitational collapse provides independent support for the ages estimated from their stellar populations. Such early-forming galaxies are rare, and their contribution to the cosmological stellar density is consistent with an extrapolation to higher redshifts of the star-formation rate measured at $z<5$; there is no evidence for a general era of spheroid formation at extreme redshifts., Comment: 9 Pages MNRAS in press. We have recently obtained deep near-IR Keck imaging of a newly-discovered z=4.04 galaxy (Frye & Broadhurst 1998). This is lensed by the rich foreground cluster Abell 2390 (z=0.23) into highly-magnified arcs 3-5" in length. Our H- and K'-band Keck/NIRC imaging allows us to map the Balmer+4000Ang break amplitude. In combination with high-quality archival HST/WFPC2 data, we can spatially resolve stellar populations along the arcs. The WFPC2 images clearly reveal several bright knots, which may correspond to sites of active star formation. Indeed, in some spatial regions the Keck/LRIS discovery spectra are consistent with OB-star spectral energy distributions in the rest-ultraviolet. We present observations of RD J030117+002025, a quasar at z = 5.50 discovered from deep, multi-color, ground-based observations covering 74 arcmin(sup 2).

We report the discovery of an X-ray luminous galaxy cluster at z = 1.26.

We have observed the rest-frame optical and UV spectra of the luminous, high redshift IRAS source FSC10214+4724. We find the optical emission lines to be characterized by ratios similar to those found in Seyfert II galaxies.
