3. Maskless and targeted creation of arrays of colour centres in diamond using focused ion beam technology

Abstract

The creation of nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond is nowadays well controlled using nitrogen implantation and annealing. Although the high-resolution placement of NV centres has been demonstrated using either collimation through pierced AFM tips or masks with apertures made by electron beam lithography, a targeted implantation into pre-defined structures in diamond may not be achieved using these techniques. We show that a beam of nitrogen ions can be focused to approximately 100 nm using focused ion beam (FIB) technology. The nitrogen ion beam is produced using an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma source. Combined with a scanning electron microscope, the nitrogen-FIB offers new possibilities for the targeted creation of single defects in diamond. This maskless technology is suitable for example for the creation of optical centres in the cavities of photonic crystals or in diamond tips for scanning magnetometry. Finally, we further show that by changing the gas source from nitrogen to xenon, standard FIB milling capabilities are also available within the same tool.

Abstract

Dynamic error budgets are an essential tool in identifying opportunities for improvements in a control system for Gravitational Wave detectors, but their potential is often not fully utilized in the control design. This paper presents a model and dynamic error budget for a challenging nested control system in the Advanced Virgo detector in combination with a systematic control design framework for one of the controllers. This framework fully utilizes the dynamic error budget by using H2 synthesis to allow for fast iterations in the control design when dealing with conflicting control objectives. A complete experimental evaluation of the effective parameters necessary to describe the dynamical behavior of an air-post vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers is presented, on the basis of theoretical equations which are derived. The complete set of parameters derived is particularly important for accurate comparisons of theoretical models on the laser dynamics with experiments.

Abstract

The nanometer-scale engineering of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres in diamond can be obtained by low-energy (keV) nitrogen implantation with limited straggling. However, shallow NV centres (a few nanometres deep) generally have inferior overall properties than deeply implanted or deep native NV centres, due to the surface proximity. It has already been shown that the spin coherence time of shallow NVs is improved by overgrowth of a thin diamond layer. However the influence of the overgrowth on the survival, the optical properties and the charge state of the centres has not been studied in detail. In this article, we have overgrown three diamond samples (containing NV centres implanted at different depths) using different procedures. We show the successful overgrowth of a pattern of very shallow (2 nm) implanted NV centres using an optimised overgrowth process. Furthermore, the charge state of ensembles and single NV centres was found to be shifted from NV0 to NV− and stabilised in the negative charge state after overgrowth. The combination of low-energy high-resolution ion implantation and high-purity chemical vapour deposition (CVD) overgrowth procedures opens the way towards the fabrication of scalable and efficient quantum devices based on single defects in diamond.

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the characterization of nanocrystals whose structure allows to drastically reduce their blinking. The main property of these CdSe nanocrystals is that they are covered by a thick shell of CdS which preserves them from interactions with the surroundings. The realization of a very thick shell is at the origin of the suppression of the long low emitting periods. In addition, we found that if the hole is still blocked into the core of the nanocrystal, the electron is delocalized into the whole structure. This effect causes a reduction of the efficiency of Auger processes. At low pumping rates, this implies that the nanocrystals do not any more exhibit real off periods. This result, combined with measurements of lifetime corresponding to periods of extinction and emission, enabled us to calculate recombination rates of the various processes involved in a low excited nanocristal, whether it is neutral or ionized. At stronger pumping rates, we show the possibility to observe radiative cascades due to multiexcitonic recombinations. The last part of the thesis concerns preliminary results we obtained controlling the emission of nanocrystals by coupling it with a Bragg mirrors photonic cavity. We observed the emission of single photons and we demonstrated the effect of the cavity on the radiative lifetime of individual nanocrystals., Cette thèse a porté principalement sur la caractérisation de nanocristaux dont la structure permet de réduire de façon drastique leur scintillement. La caractéristique essentielle de ces nanocristaux de CdSe est qu'ils sont entourés d'une coquille épitaxiée très épaisse de CdS qui les préserve d'interactions trop importantes avec l'extérieur. La réalisation d'une coquille très épaisse permet de supprimer les longues périodes d'extinction. De plus, on a pu vérifier que si le trou reste localisé dans le coeur du nanocristal, l'électron est délocalisé dans l'ensemble de la structure. Cet effet de délocalisation provoque une réduction de l'efficacité des processus Auger. À bas taux de pompage, cette propriété implique que les nanocristaux ne présentent plus d'états réellement éteints. Ce résultat, associé aux mesures des durées de vie correspondant aux périodes d'extinction et d'émission, nous a permis de calculer les taux de recombinaisons des différents processus en jeu dans un nanocristal faiblement excité, qu'il soit neutre ou ionisé. A plus fort taux de pompage, nous montrons la possibilité d'observer des cascades radiatives consécutives à des recombinaisons d'états multiexcitoniques. La dernière partie a été consacrée à des premiers résultats concernant le contrôle de l'émission de nanocristaux par leur insertion dans des cavités photoniques à miroirs de Bragg. Nous observons l'émission de photons uniques et nous démontrons l'effet de la cavité sur la durée de vie radiative des nanocristaux.

Abstract

International audience; The control and stabilisation of the charge state of nitrogen‐vacancy centres in diamond is an important issue for the achievement of reliable processing of spin‐based quantum information. The effect of phosphorous and boron doping of diamond on the charge state of nitrogen‐vacancy (NV) centres is shown here. Ensembles of NV centres are produced at a depth of 60 nm in ultrapure diamond by implantation of nitrogen ions. Overlapping with the NV ensembles, donor and acceptor doped regions of different doping levels are prepared by ion implantation of phosphorus and boron followed by annealing in vacuum at 1500 °C. We show how the charge state of NV centres is controlled by the presence of phosphorous or boron atoms in their neighbourhood. For the lowest doping level, spectral measurements on the ensemble of NV centres reveal a higher amount of NV0 in the case of boron and a higher amount of NV− in the case of phosphorus, as compared with undoped regions. This behaviour is strengthened when the doping level is increased. Interestingly, the charge state control of native silicon‐vacancy centres is also evidenced. Finally, we discuss the role of the surface termination of diamond on the average charge state of the NV ensemble (still dominant even at a depth of 60 nm) and confirm that the surface 2D‐hole‐gas (H‐termination) can be compensated by nitrogen itself.

Abstract

We present the synthesis and theoptical properties of a new type of two-dimensional heterostructure:core/crown CdSe/CdS nanoplatelets. They consist of CdSe nanoplateletsthat are extended laterally with CdS. Both the CdSe core and the CdScrown dimensions can be controlled. Their thickness is controlledat the monolayer level. These novel nanoplatelet-based heterostructureshave spectroscopic properties that can be similar to nanoplateletsor closer to quantum dots, depending on the CdSe core lateral size. Abstract

Direct lithography of resist blends, embedding semiconductor colloidal nanocrystals (NCs) is an innovative way to achieve nanopositioning of NCs in quantum-confined optical resonators. In this work, we show a new appealing approach for the fabrication of single-photon sources operating at room temperature by localizing semiconductor colloidal NCs into vertical planar microcavities with lithographic techniques.

Abstract

Secure quantum communication systems (QCS) based on the transmission of crucial information through single photons are among the most appealing frontiers for telecommunications, though their development is still hindered by the lack of cheap and bright single photon sources (SPSs) operating at room temperature (RT). In this paper, we show the occurrence of photon antibunching at RT from single colloidal CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) inserted in a vertical microcavity. Moreover, by using high-resolution lithographic techniques, we conceived a general route for positioning single colloidal quantum dots in the microcavity. The findings and the technique presented here can be considered a first step towards the development of SPS devices operating at RT.
