The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between neuropsychiatric symptoms and progressive cognitive decline by assessing cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms, and aggressive behavior in a sample of elderly subjects. The study sample consisted of 201 subjects admitted to nursing homes. For the purpose of the present study each subject was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Geriatric Depression Scale, and the Modified Overt Aggression Scale. The results show that aggressive behavior and depressive symptoms are associated with progressive cognitive decline in elderly subjects. Early assessment of these conditions can promote rational therapeutic strategies that may improve the quality of life and delay institutionalization for elderly patients.Keywords: neuropsychiatric symptoms, dementia, behavioral and psychological syndromes of dementia (BPSD), progressive cognitive decline

8. Brazilian palygorskite as an alternative to commercial adsorbents for methylene blue: A discussion about composition, morphology and pore profile

Abstract

Palygorskite has attracted particular attention as a specialized adsorbent due to its high specific surface area, porous texture and abundant surface groups, but its processing for commercial products makes the resulting material more expensive. In this scope, the aim of this work is to evaluate the potential of Brazilian naturally occurring palygorskite samples with low processing degree as an alternative to commercial palygorskites adsorbents for methylene blue, evaluating samples with different compositions, morphologies and microporous profiles. Materials were characterized using FTIR, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, and surface area analysis (BET method). The Brazilian ones were processed in bar and disk mills and passed through a # 325 mesh sieve system. All samples showed common palygorskite X-ray diffraction patterns and specific surface area ranging from 100 to 147 m/g. The application of clay samples was investigated for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye, and the influence time of adsorption, initial dye concentration and adsorbent dosage were evaluated. The methylene blue adsorption was best described by the pseudo-second order model. The adsorption kinetics of methylene blue by palygorskite conforms to the pseudo-second-order model (R = 0,9997). The maximum removal capacity for methylene blue was determined to be 694 (±36.53) mg/g. Additionally, the Freundlich model demonstrated the most favorable mathematical fit. Adsorption capacities varied between 49 and 150 mg/g for 300 mg/L MB solutions, with noteworthy performance exhibited by Brazilian samples, achieving up to twice the adsorption compared to their commercial counterparts, despite possessing lower specific surface areas. The presence of two distinct pore modes, centered at 25 and 45 Å, proved pivotal in the sample with the highest adsorption capacity, reaching adsorption equilibrium at 40 min.

In this work, a magnetic field sensor based on plastic optical fiber was built. The operation of the sensor exploits the magnetoelectric effect of a ferrofluid. Both the optical sensor and the ferrofluid were manufactured and properly characterized. Abstract

The aim of this work was to explore the feasibility of timeresolved reflectance spectroscopy (TRS) in determining the ripening degree and the quality of orangefleshed melons. Sixty 'Honey Moon' melons were measured by TRS in the 5401064 nm range and classified as less (LeM), medium (MeM), and more (MoM) mature according to increasing values of µa540. MoM fruit showed yellower peel color, slightly more orange pulp, higher juiciness and higher carotenoid contents than LeM ones. MoM fruit also showed higher internal ethylene concentration and lower firmness than LeM ones, even if the differences were not significant. The µa540 was positively related to internal ethylene, carotenoid accumulation, and juiciness, indicating that µa540 was linked to different ripening processes in melons. However, the relationship between µa540 and total carotenoid content was not as high as expected due to the low variability of pulp color and of carotenoid content. Changes in flesh color toward a more orange shade were accompanied by increased juiciness and ethylene production and by carotenoid accumulation, while changes in peel color were associated with changes in flesh firmness and juiciness. In conclusion, the absorption coefficient measured at 540 nm (µa540) by TRS could be used to sort melons in different ripening degrees; however, its applicability will need to be evaluated on a larger number of fruits and on other varieties. Abstract

Objectives A new device that combines, for the first time, two photonic technologies (time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy and diffuse correlation spectroscopy) was provided and tested within the BabyLux project. Aim was to validate the expected changes in cerebral oxygenation and blood flow. Methods A pulse oximeter and the BabyLux device were held in place (right hand/wrist and frontoparietal region, respectively) for 10 min after birth in healthy term infants delivered by elective caesarean section. Pulse oximeter saturation (SpO 2), cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (StO 2) and blood flow index (BFI) were measured over time. Tissue oxygen extraction (TOE) and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen index (CMRO 2 I) were calculated. Results Thirty infants were enrolled in two centres. After validity check of data, 23% of infants were excluded from TOE and CMRO 2 I calculation due to missing data. As expected, SpO 2 (estimate 3.05 %/min; 95% CI 2.78 to 3.31 %/min) and StO 2 (estimate 3.95 %/min; 95% CI 3.63 to 4.27 %/min) increased in the first 10 min after birth, whereas BFI (estimate-2.84×10-9 cm 2/s/min; 95% CI-2.50×10-9 to-3.24×10-9 cm 2/s/min) and TOE (estimate-0.78 %/min; 95% CI-1.12 to-0.45 %/min) decreased. Surprisingly, CMRO 2 I decreased (estimate-7.94×10-8/min; 95% CI-6.26×10-8 to-9.62×10-8/min). Conclusions Brain oxygenation and BFI during transition were successfully and simultaneously obtained by the BabyLux device; no adverse effects were recorded, and the BabyLux device did not limit the standard care. The preliminary results from clinical application of the BabyLux device are encouraging in terms of safety and feasibility; they are consistent with previous reports on brain oxygenation during transition, although the interpretation of the decreasing CMRO 2 I remains open. Abstract

Many bioinformatics methods have been proposed for reducing the complexity of large gene or protein networks into relevant subnetworks or modules. Yet, how such methods compare to each other in terms of their ability to identify disease-relevant modules in different types of network remains poorly understood. We launched the ‘Disease Module Identification DREAM Challenge’, an open competition to comprehensively assess module identification methods across diverse protein–protein interaction, signaling, gene co-expression, homology and cancer-gene networks. Predicted network modules were tested for association with complex traits and diseases using a unique collection of 180 genome-wide association studies. Our robust assessment of 75 module identification methods reveals top-performing algorithms, which recover complementary trait-associated modules. We find that most of these modules correspond to core disease-relevant pathways, which often comprise therapeutic targets. This community challenge establishes biologically interpretable benchmarks, tools and guidelines for molecular network analysis to study human disease biology.

We assessed the sensitivity of 1D and 2D homogeneous photon diffusion models for Time Domain NIRS in estimating preterm and term neonates’ cerebral hemodynamic parameters simulated by Monte Carlo methods on realistic 3D anatomical meshes.
