1. Vibrational similarities in jamming-unjamming of polycrystalline and disordered granular packings

Abstract

Jammed structures with finite shear modulus emerge from polycrystalline monodisperse and disordered bidisperse granular packings. To link these macroscopic mechanical properties with microstructural characteristics, we examine the vibrational behavior of two-dimensional polycrystalline monodisperse and disordered bidisperse systems using discrete element method simulations. The vibrational density of states (DOS) reflects structural disorder and soft modes, and we analyze this for both types of packings as they approach jamming and unjamming densities. Our results reveal that the low-frequency plateau in the DOS, observed in both polycrystalline and disordered packings, originates from nonaffine particle displacements, particularly those involving "rattlers", which are prominent near jamming and unjamming states. Although the jamming and unjamming process is irreversible, we find no evidence of expected history dependence in the DOS across any of the systems studied., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

2. Rheological regimes in agitated granular media under shear

Abstract

Agitated granular media have a rich rheology: they exhibit Newtonian behavior at low shear rate and density, develop a yield stress at high density, and cross over to Bagnoldian shear thickening when sheared rapidly -- making them challenging to encompass in one theoretical framework. We measure the rheology of air-fluidized glass particles, spanning five orders of magnitude in shear rate, and show that all rheological regimes can be delineated by two dimensionless numbers. We propose a constitutive relation that captures all flow behaviors, qualitatively and quantitatively, in one unified framework.

6. The manifold rheology of fluidized granular media

Abstract

Fluidized granular media have a rich rheology: measuring shear stress $\sigma$ as a function of shear rate $\dot\gamma$, they exhibit Newtonian behavior $\sigma\sim\dot\gamma$ for low densities and shear rates, develop a yield stress for intermediate shear rates and densities approaching the granular glass transition, and finally, cross over to shear-thickening Bagnold scaling, $\sigma\sim\dot\gamma^2$. This wealth of flow-behaviors makes fluidized beds a fascinating material, but also one that is challenging to encompass into a global theory, despite its relevance for optimizing industrial processes and predicting natural hazards. We provide careful measurements spanning eight orders of magnitude in shear rate, and show that all these rheological regimes can be described qualitatively and quantitatively using the granular integration through transient formalism, a theory for glassy dynamics under shear adapted to granular fluids.

7. Structural transitions in jammed asymmetric bidisperse granular packings

Abstract

We study the local structural changes along the jamming transitions in asymmetric bidisperse granu\-lar packings. The local structure of the packing is assessed by the contact orientational order, $\tilde{Q}_{\ell}$, that quantifies the contribution of each contact configuration (Large-Large, Small-Small, Large-Small, Small-Large) in the jammed structure. The partial values of $\tilde{Q}_{\ell}$ are calculated with respect to known ordered lattices that are fixed by the size ratio, $\delta$, of the particles. We find that the packing undergoes a structural transition at $\phi_J$, manifested by a sudden jump in the partial $\tilde{Q}_{\ell}$. Each contact configuration contributes to the jammed structure in a different way, changing with $\delta$ and concentration of small particles, $X_{\mathrm{S}}$. The results show not only that the packing undergoes a structural change upon jamming, but also that bidisperse packings exhibit local HCP and FCC structures also found in monodisperse packings. This suggests that the jammed structure of bidisperse systems is inherently endowed with local structural order. 9. Granular piston-probing in microgravity: powder compression, from densification to jamming

Abstract

The macroscopic response of granular solids is determined by the microscopic fabric of force chains, which, in turn, is intimately linked to the history of the solid. To query the influence of gravity on powder flow-behavior, a granular material is subjected to compression by a piston in a closed container, on-ground and in microgravity. Results show that piston-probing densifies the packing, eventually leading to jamming of the material compressed by the piston, regardless of the gravitational environment. The onset of jamming is found to appear at lower packing fraction in microgravity ($\varphi^{\textrm{$\mu$-g}}_J = 0.567 \pm 0.014$) than on-ground ($\varphi^{\text{gnd}}_J = 0.579 \pm 0.014 $). We interpret these findings as the manifestation of a granular fabric altered by the gravitational force field: in absence of a secondary load (due to gravitational acceleration) to stimulate reorganization in a different direction to the major compression stress, the particles' configuration becomes stable at lower density, as the particles have no external drive to promote reorganization into a denser packing. This is coupled with a change in interparticular force balance which takes place under low gravity, as cohesive interactions become predominant. 13. Rheology of granular liquids in extensional flows: Beyond the $\mu(\mathcal{I})$-law

Abstract

The Granular Integration Through Transients (GITT) formalism gives a theoretical description of the rheology of moderately dense granular flows and suspensions. In this work, we extend the GITT equations beyond the case of simple shear flows studied before. Applying this to the particular example of extensional flows, we show that the predicted behavior is somewhat different from that of the more frequently studied simple shear case, as illustrated by the possibility of non monotonous evolution of the effective friction coefficient $\mu$ with the inertial number $\mathcal{I}$. By the reduction of the GITT equations to simple toy-models, we provide a generalization of the $\mu(\mathcal{I})$-law true for any type of flow deformation. Our analysis also includes a study of the Trouton ratio, which is shown to behave quite similarly to that of dense colloidal suspensions., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

14. Bulk Modulus along Jamming Transition Lines of Bidisperse Granular Packings

Abstract

We present 3D DEM simulations of bidisperse granular packings to investigate their jamming densities, $\phi_J$, and dimensionless bulk moduli, $K$, as a function of the size ratio, $\delta$, and the concentration of small particles, $X_{\mathrm S}$. We determine the partial and total bulk moduli for each packing and report the jamming transition diagram, i.e., the density or volume fraction marking both the first and second transitions of the system. At a large enough size difference, e.g., $\delta \le 0.22$, $X^{*}_{\mathrm S}$ divides the diagram with most small particles either non-jammed or jammed jointly with large ones. We find that the bulk modulus $K$ jumps at $X^{*}_{\mathrm S}(\delta = 0.15) \approx 0.21$, at the maximum jamming density, where both particle species mix most efficiently, while for $X_{\mathrm S} < X^{*}_{\mathrm S}$ $K$ is decoupled in two scenarios as a result of the first and second jamming transition. Along the second transition, $K$ rises relative to the values found at the first transition, however, is still small compared to $K$ at $X^{*}_{\mathrm S}$. While the first transition is sharp, the second is smooth, carried by small-large interactions, while the small-small contacts display a transition. This demonstrates that for low enough $\delta$ and $X_{\mathrm S}$, the jamming of small particles indeed impacts the internal resistance of the system. Our new results will allow tuning the bulk modulus $K$ or other properties, such as the wave speed, by choosing specific sizes and concentrations based on a better understanding of whether small particles contribute to the jammed structure or not, and how the micromechanical structure behaves at either transition., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures

We adapt statistical models of the physics of complex fluids to study the rheology of granular liquids. This allows us to provide laws of granular rheology based on first principles, which compare well with previously established phenomenological laws. In particular, the very successful law of mu(I) rheology can be understood within our model as the lowest order non trivial Pade approximant of the macroscopic laws of rheology. Abstract

In contrast to molecular gases, granular gases are characterized by inelastic collisions and require therefore permanent driving to maintain a constant kinetic energy. The kinetic theory of granular gases describes how the average velocity of the particles decreases after the driving is shut off. Moreover it predicts that the rescaled particle velocity distribution will approach a stationary state with overpopulated high-velocity tails as compared to the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. While this fundamental theoretical result was reproduced by numerical simulations, an experimental confirmation is still missing. Using a microgravity experiment which allows the spatially homogeneous excitation of spheres via magnetic fields, we confirm the theoretically predicted exponential decay of the tails of the velocity distribution., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Transport properties of a hard-sphere colloidal fluid are investigated by Brownian dynamics simulations. We implement a novel algorithm for the time-dependent velocity-autocorrelation function (VACF) essentially eliminating the noise of the bare random motion. The measured VACF reveals persistent anti-correlations manifested by a negative algebraic power-law tail $t^{-5/2}$ at all densities. At small packing fractions, the simulations fully agree with the analytic low-density prediction, yet the amplitude of the tail becomes dramatically suppressed as the packing fraction is increased. The mode-coupling theory of the glass transition provides a qualitative explanation for the strong variation in terms of the static compressibility as well as the slowing down of the structural relaxation., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

20. Acoustic Waves in Granular Packings at Low Confinement Pressure

Abstract

Elastic properties of a granular packing show nonlinear behavior determined by its discrete structure and nonlinear inter-grain force laws. Acoustic waves show a transition from constant, pressure-dependent sound speed to a shock-wave like behavior with amplitude-determined propagation speed. This becomes increasingly visible at low static confinement pressure as the transient regime shifts to lower wave amplitudes for lower static pressure. In microgravity, confinement pressure can be orders of magnitude lower than in a ground based experiment. Also, the absence of hydrostatic gradients allows for much more homogeneous and isotropic pressure distribution. We present a novel apparatus for acoustic wave transmission measurements at such low packing pressures. A pressure control loop is implemented by a microcontroller that monitors static force sensor readings and adjusts the position of a movable wall with a linear motor until the desired pressure is reached. Measurements of acoustic waves are possible using accelerometers embedded in the granular packing as well as piezos. For excitation we use a voice coil-driven wall, with a large variety of signal shapes, frequencies and amplitudes. Abstract

We present numerical evidence for an additional discontinuous transition inside the jammed regime for an asymmetric bidisperse granular packing upon compression. This additional transition line separates jammed states with networks of predominantly large particles from jammed networks formed by both large and small particles, and the transition is indicated by a discontinuity in the number of particles contributing to the jammed network. The additional transition line emerges from the curves of jamming transitions and terminates in an end-point where the discontinuity vanishes. The additional line is starting at a size ratio around $\delta = 0.22$ and grows longer for smaller $\delta$. For $\delta \to 0$, the additional transition line approaches a limit that can be derived analytically. The observed jamming scenarios are reminiscent of glass-glass transitions found in colloidal glasses., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

26. Granular Matter in Space

Abstract

The investigation of granular matter benefits from experiments in microgravity in several ways and may be categorized into three regimes of increasing density: (1) Granular gases [1] are dilute systems and subject to sedimentation which can be avoided in microgravity. Their agitation by magnetic excitation allows for the study of cooling, velocity distributions and the onset of particle agglomeration. (2) Granular fluids [2] are denser than granular gases and are monitored by scattering techniques. On Earth, granular fluids are anisotropic and inhomogeneous. In microgravity, agitated homogeneous granular fluids can be prepared for densities up to the jamming transition. (3) Granular packings [3] close to the jamming transisionexperience a large pressure gradient on Earth which is absent in microgravity. Hence, sound transmission can be studied at very low confinement. Similarly, microgravityoffers unique opportunities for the rheology on dense granular systems.

29. Distinguishing noisy crystalline structures using bond orientational order parameters

Abstract

The bond orientational order parameters originally introduced by Steinhardt \emph{et. al.} [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{28}, 784 (1983)] are a common tool for local structure characterization in soft matter studies. Recently, Mickel \emph{et. al.} [J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{138}, 044501 (2013)] highlighted problems of the bond orientational order parameters due to the ambiguity of the underlying neighbourhood definition. Here we show the difficulties of distinguish common structures like FCC- and BCC-based structures with the suggested neighbourhood definitions when noise is introduced. We propose a simple improvement to the neighbourhood definition that results in robust and continuous bond orientational order parameters with which we can accurately distinguish crystal structures even when noise is present., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Fredrickson-Andersen (FA) model---a kinetically constrained lattice model---displays an ergodic to non-ergodic transition with a slow two-step relaxation of dynamical correlation functions close to the transition point. We derive an asymptotically exact solution for the dynamical occupation correlation function of the FA model on the Bethe lattice by identifying an exact expression for its memory kernel. The exact solution fulfills a scaling relation between critical exponents and allows to calculate the exponents explicitly. In addition, we propose an approximate dynamics that describes numerical data away from the critical point over many decades in time., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Progress in mechanobiology allowed us to better understand the important role of mechanical forces in the regulation of biological processes. Space research in the field of life sciences clearly showed that gravity plays a crucial role in biological processes. The space environment offers the unique opportunity to carry out experiments without gravity, helping us not only to understand the effects of gravitational alterations on biological systems but also the mechanisms underlying mechanoperception and cell/tissue response to mechanical and gravitational stresses. Despite the progress made so far, for future space exploration programs it is necessary to increase our knowledge on the mechanotransduction processes as well as on the molecular mechanisms underlying microgravity-induced cell and tissue alterations. This white paper reports the suggestions and recommendations of the SciSpacE Science Community for the elaboration of the section of the European Space Agency roadmap “Biology in Space and Analogue Environments” focusing on “How are cells and tissues influenced by gravity and what are the gravity perception mechanisms?” The knowledge gaps that prevent the Science Community from fully answering this question and the activities proposed to fill them are discussed.

Abstract

Periodically, the European Space Agency (ESA) updates scientific roadmaps in consultation with the scientific community. The ESA SciSpacE Science Community White Paper (SSCWP) 9, “Biology in Space and Analogue Environments”, focusses in 5 main topic areas, aiming to address key community-identified knowledge gaps in Space Biology. Here we present one of the identified topic areas, which is also an unanswered question of life science research in Space: “How to Obtain an Integrated Picture of the Molecular Networks Involved in Adaptation to Microgravity in Different Biological Systems?” The manuscript reports the main gaps of knowledge which have been identified by the community in the above topic area as well as the approach the community indicates to address the gaps not yet bridged. Moreover, the relevance that these research activities might have for the space exploration programs and also for application in industrial and technological fields on Earth is briefly discussed.

35. Double origin of stochastic granular tribocharging

Abstract

The mechanisms underlying triboelectric charging have a stochastic nature. We investigate how this randomness affects the distributions of charges generated on granular particles during either a single or many collisions. The charge distributions we find in our experiments are wider than normal distributions with an exponential decay of the probability, they are asymmetric, and exhibit charges of both signs. Moreover, we find a linear correlation between the width and mean of these distributions. We rationalize these findings with a model for triboelectric charging which combines stochastic charge separation during contact and stochastic charge recombination after separation of the surfaces. Our results further imply that subsequent charging events are not statistically independent., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract

We discuss the uniform shear flow of a fluidized granular bed composed of monodisperse Hertzian spheres. Considering high densities around the glass transition density of inelastic Hertzian spheres, we report kinetic theory expressions for the Newtonian viscosity as well as the Bagnold coefficient. Abstract

Considering a granular fluid of inelastic smooth hard spheres we discuss the conditions delineating the rheological regimes comprising Newtonian, Bagnoldian, shear thinning, and shear thickening behavior. Developing a kinetic theory, valid at finite shear rates and densities around the glass transition density, we predict the viscosity and Bagnold coefficient at practically relevant values of the control parameters. The determination of full flow curves relating the shear stress $\sigma$ to the shear rate $\dot\gamma$, and predictions of the yield stress complete our discussion of granular rheology derived from first principles., Comment: 7 pages, minor fixes and extended appendix

Abstract

We compute the rheological properties of inelastic hard spheres in steady shear flow for general shear rates and densities. Starting from the microscopic dynamics we generalise the Integration Through Transients (\textsc{itt}) formalism to a fluid of dissipative, randomly driven granular particles. The stress relaxation function is computed approximately within a mode-coupling theory---based on the physical picture, that relaxation of shear is dominated by slow structural relaxation, as the glass transition is approached. The transient build-up of stress in steady shear is thus traced back to transient density correlations which are computed self-consistently within mode-coupling theory. The glass transition is signalled by the appearance of a yield stress and a divergence of the Newtonian viscosity, characterizing linear response. For shear rates comparable to the structural relaxation time, the stress becomes independent of shear rate and we observe shear thinning, while for the largest shear rates Bagnold scaling, i.e., a quadratic increase of shear stress with shear rate, is recovered. The rheological properties are qualitatively similar for all values of $\varepsilon$, the coefficient of restitution; however, the magnitude of the stress as well as the range of shear thinning and thickening show significant dependence on the inelasticity., Comment: 37 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The diffusion-driven growth of a foam ball is a phenomenon that appears in many manufacturing process as well as in a variety of geological phenomena. Usually these processes are greatly affected by gravity, as foam is much lighter than the surrounding liquid. However, the growth of the foam free of gravity effects is still very relevant, as it is connected to manufacturing in space and to the forma- tion of rocks in meteorites and other small celestial bodies. The aim of this research is to investigate experimentally the growth of a bubble cloud growing in a gas-supersaturated liquid in microgravity conditions. Here, we describe the ex- periments carried out in the drop tower of the Center of Ap- plied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM). In few words, a foam seed is formed with spark-induced cavitation in carbonated water, whose time evolution is recorded with two high-speed cameras. Our preliminary results shed some light on how the size of the foam ball scales with time, in particular at times much longer than what could be studied in normal conditions, i.e. on the surface of the Earth, where the dynamics of the foam is already dominated by gravity after several milliseconds.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study is to present the outcome of a cohort of adolescent patients with trochlear dysplasia and elevated tibial tuberosity trochlear groove (TTTG) distance suffering from recurrent patellar dislocation. Treatment consisted of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction and a modified Grammont procedure. METHODS: MRI examinations were obtained pre- and postoperatively. Trochlear dysplasia was classified according to Déjour, and TTTG was measured on MRI. The Tegner Activity Scale and the Kujala Knee Score were assessed preoperatively and at follow-up. The Kujala Knee score and the IKDC 2000 knee score were documented at follow-up (median 50, range 20-61 months; SD 16.6). RESULTS: Seven knees of six patients (median age 16.5 years, range 14-17 years) with trochlear dysplasia and elevated TTTG distance (median 17 mm, range 16.1-21.9 mm; SD 2.8) were treated. Trochlear dysplasia was classified as Déjour type A in 1, type B in 5, and type C in 1 knee. The Kujala Knee Score significantly increased from values of 55 (range 17-88; SD 25.9) to 94 (range 73-100; SD 9.1) at follow-up (p = 0.028). TAS improved from preoperative 2 (range 0-7; SD 2.5) to 5 (range 4-9; SD 1.8) at follow-up (p = 0.034). Median IKDC 2000 Knee Score at follow-up was 89 (range 61-100, SD 13.4). No re-dislocations were encountered. CONCLUSION: In selected adolescents with recurrent patellofemoral instability, MPFL reconstruction in combination with a modified Grammont technique yields excellent functional outcome and could, therefore, help to avoid major procedures, such as osteotomies. Abstract

We consider a two-dimensional model system of Brownian particles in which slow particles are accelerated while fast particles are damped. The motion of the individual particles are described by a Langevin equation with Rayleigh-Helmholtz velocity dependent friction. In case of noninteracting particles, the time evolution equations lead to a non-Gaussian velocity distribution. The velocity dependent friction allows negative values of the friction or energy intakes by slow particles which we consider as active motion, and also causes breaking of the fluctuation dissipation relation. Defining the effective temperature proportional to the second moment of velocity, it is shown that for a constant effective temperature the higher the noise strength, the lower are the number of active particles in the system. Using the Mori-Zwanzig formalism and the mode-coupling approximation, the equation of motion for the density auto-correlation function are derived. The equations are solved using the equilibrium structure factors. Abstract

Active and passive control strategies of internal pressure for hot forming of tubes and profiles with granular media are described. Force transmission and plastic deformation of granular medium is experimentally investigated. Friction between tube, granular medium and die as also the external stress field are shown to be essential for the process understanding. Wrinkling, thinning and insufficient forming of the tube establishes the process window for the active pressure process. By improving the punch geometry and controlling tribological conditions, the process limits are extended. Abstract

Density waves are characteristic for fluidized beds and affect measurements on liquid-like dynamics in fluidized granular media. Here, the intensity autocorrelation function as obtainable with diffusing-wave spectroscopy is derived in the presence of density waves. The predictions by the derived form of the IACF match experimental observations from a gas-fluidized bed. Abstract

Investigation of dynamics in dense granular media is challenging. Here we present a setup that facilitates gas fluidization of dense granular media in microgravity. The dynamics is characterized using diffusing wave spectroscopy. We demonstrate that agitated granular media reach a steady state within fractions of a second in drop tower flights. The intensity autocorrelation functions obtained in microgravity show a remarkable dependence on sample volume fraction and driving strength. A plateau in correlation merges at low volume fractions and strong driving, while correlation decays only very slowly but continuously at high packing fractions. The setup allows to independently set sample volume fraction and driving strength, and thus extends the possibilities for investigations on dynamics in dense granular on ground., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures
