5. Efficiency improvements in solution-based CuInS 2 solar cells incorporating a Cl-doped ZnO nanopillars array

Abstract

Solar cells are prepared combining ZnO as n-type window In2S3 as buffer layer and CuInS2 as p-type absorbing layer. Superstrate configuration is chosen so that all the materials could be prepared using inexpensive and eco-friendly techniques, based on solution processed deposition methods and non-toxic materials, avoiding vacuum high temperature Cd-containing layers and KCN purification stages. Also, no further sulfurization treatment is involved in the preparation. To improve the collection efficiency, the cells are built using two different ZnO nanostructures (with and without Cl-doping) and compared to the response of a cell prepared with just one dense ZnO layer. The photoresponse of the three different solar cells is analysed by J–V curves under illumination and intensity-modulated photovoltage/photocurrent spectroscopy. A systematic characterization of the morphology and composition is carried out using X-ray diffraction Raman confocal and electronic microscopy. The introduction of a nanostructured layer is not enough to produce a marked improvement in any of the electrical parameters. Instead, the presence of Cl-doped nanopillars is shown to increase the efficiency of the solar cells up to a maximum value of 2.8%. A better series resistance together with a higher value for the charge collection efficiency contributes to explain the corresponding improvement in cell efficiency. Fil: Di Iorio, Yesica Dolores. Abstract

The public buildings sector represents one of the most intensive items of EU energy consumption; the application of retrofit solutions in existing buildings is a crucial way to reduce its impact. To facilitate the knowledge of the energy performance of the existing non-residential buildings and the choice of the more adequate actions, Public Administrations (PA) should have the availability of proper tools. Within the Italian project “POI 2007-13”, a database and a decision support tool, for easy use, even to a non-technical user, have been developed. A large set of data, obtained from the energy audits of 151 existing public buildings located in four regions of South of Italy have been analysed, elaborated and organized in a database. This has been used to identify the best architectures of two ANNs and to train them. The first ANN provides the actual energy performance of any building; the second ANN assesses key economic indicators. A decision support tool, based on the use of these ANNs is conceived for a fast prediction of the energy performance of buildings and for a first selection of energy retrofit actions, which can be applied.

Abstract

Background Dapoxetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and the first drug approved for the on-demand treatment of premature ejaculation (PE). Its safety was established in a thorough clinical development program. Objective To characterize the safety profile of dapoxetine in PE treatment and to report the incidence, severity, and type of adverse events. Design, setting, and participants We conducted a 12-wk, open-label, observational study with a 4-wk, postobservational contact. A total of 10 028 patients were enrolled, with 6712 patients (67.6%) treated with dapoxetine 30–60mg (group A)and 3316 (32.4%) treated with alternative care/nondapoxetine (group B). Interventions Treatment with dapoxetine or alternative care/nondapoxetine. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and concomitant therapy use during the 12-wk observational and the postobservational period were reported. Results and limitations The mean age for all patients was 40.5 yr. In group A, 93.0% of the patients were initially prescribed dapoxetine 30mg. Treatment options for group B patients included clomipramine, paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline, topical drugs, condoms, and behavioral counseling. Both treatment regimens were well tolerated. TEAEs were reported by 12.0% and 8.9% of group A and group B, respectively, with the highest incidence observed in patients aged >65 yr for group A (21.4%) and 30–39 yr (9.8%) for group B. The most commonly reported TEAEs were nausea, headache, and vertigo, with a higher incidence in group A (3.1%, 2.6%, and 1.0%, respectively) than in group B (oral drugs: 2.3%, 1.3%, and 0.9%, respectively). There were no cases of syncope in group A and one case in group B. A major limitation is that this was a nonrandomized, open-label, short-term study lacking efficacy data. Conclusions The results of this postmarketing observational study demonstrated that dapoxetine for treatment of PE has a good safety profile and low prevalence of TEAEs. Syncope and major cardiovascular adverse events were not reported. The high level of adherence by healthcare providers to the contraindications, special warnings, and precautions for dapoxetine minimizes the risk for its use in routine clinical practice. The current risk minimization measures for its identified and potential risks are effective.

Abstract

Two different primary malignancies can arise from the adrenal gland: the adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) from the adrenal cortex and the malignant pheochromocytoma from the adrenal medulla. Both malignancies are extremely rare. ACC has an estimated incidence of 0.5-2% new cases per million people per year. We present the case of a 55-year-old male affected by a non-characterized right adrenal gland lesion. The lesion (9x7 cm of diameter) was discovered accidentally by performing an abdominal ultrasound for gallstones. Then the patient performed a MRI in order to better characterize the lesion. We performed an open adrenalectomy (OA) for suspected malignancy of the right adrenal gland mass. We review the literature to assess if there is still a role for open surgery in the treatment of malignant tumors of the adrenal gland.

Abstract

Solar cells are prepared combining ZnO as n-type window In2S3 as buffer layer and CuInS2 as p-type absorbing layer. Superstrate configuration is chosen so that all the materials could be prepared using inexpensive and eco-friendly techniques, based on solution processed deposition methods and non-toxic materials, avoiding vacuum high temperature Cd-containing layers and KCN purification stages. Also, no further sulfurization treatment is involved in the preparation. To improve the collection efficiency, the cells are built using two different ZnO nanostructures (with and without Cl-doping) and compared to the response of a cell prepared with just one dense ZnO layer. The photoresponse of the three different solar cells is analysed by J-V curves under illumination and intensity-modulated photovoltage/photocurrent spectroscopy. A systematic characterization of the morphology and composition is carried out using X-ray diffraction Raman confocal and electronic microscopy. The introduction of a nanostructured layer is not enough to produce a marked improvement in any of the electrical parameters. Instead, the presence of Cl-doped nanopillars is shown to increase the efficiency of the solar cells up to a maximum value of 2.8%. A better series resistance together with a higher value for the charge collection efficiency contributes to explain the corresponding improvement in cell efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Long-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (LL-SEP) provide information on the function of somatosensory cortical structures. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is indicated in the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction. Aim of this study was to evaluate LL-SEP in patients with overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) treated by means of PTNS.Sixteen female patients with a diagnosis of pharmacoresistant OAB underwent PTNS while eight female patients with the same diagnosis underwent sham stimulation. LL-SEP were performed at baseline and at the end of PTNS or sham stimulation. Peak latency and peak to peak amplitude of P80, P100, and P200 waves were measured.Mean latency of P80, P100, and P200 and mean amplitude of P200 did not show any significant change after both stimulation. Mean amplitude of P80 and P100 waves increased significantly after PTNS while it did not vary after sham stimulation.The P80 and P100 amplitude increase might reflect long-term modifications in synaptic efficiency through the somatosensory pathway. The plastic reorganization of cortical network triggered by peripheral neuromodulation can be hypothesized as a mechanism of action of PTNS. Further studies are needed to correlate LL-SEP modifications after PTNS with the success of the treatment.

Abstract

The cellular processes underlying individual differences in the Work-ing Memory Capacity (WMC) of humans are essentially unknown. Psychological experiments suggest that subjects with lower working memory capacity (LWMC), with respect to subjects with higher capacity (HWMC), take more time to recall items from a list because they search through a larger set of items and are much more susceptible to interference during retrieval. However, a more precise link be-tween psychological experiments and cellular properties is lacking and very difficult to investigate experimentally. In this paper, we investigate the possible underlying mechanisms at the single neuron level by using a computational model of hippocam-pal CA1 pyramidal neurons, which have been suggested to be deeply involved in the recognition of specific items. The model makes a few experimentally testable predictions on the cellular processes underlying the cumulative latency in delayed free recall experimentally observed in humans under different testing conditions. The results suggest, for the first time, a physiologically plausible explanation for individual performances, and establish a proof of principle for the hypothesis that HWMC individuals use a larger portion of the apical tree with a correlated higher level of synaptic background noise. Abstract

This is an open, multicentre, randomized, crossover study having the aim to evaluate the preference for sildenafil citrate or tadalafil in a population of Italian patients affected by ED, and to compare the efficacy and safety of these two drugs. MATERIAL AND METHODS. From October 2003 to November 2004, thirteen Italian centers enrolled ED patients (age >18) being in steady and naïve relation to ED treatment, both through PDE5 inhibitors and any other treatment option. These patients were randomized to sildenafil or tadalafil for 12 weeks, after which they were switched to the alternative treatment for a further 12 weeks. The preference was evaluated through the Treatment Preference Question (TPQ): "During this clinical trial you have taken tadalafil and sildenafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Which medication do you prefer to take for the next 8 weeks of treatment?". Moreover, patients were asked to express their preference as "strong" or "moderate" and to answer some questions to clarify the reasons behind their preference. SEP and IIEF-EF questionnaires were used for a comparison of efficacy. RESULTS. 167 patients were enrolled, 144 of whom completed both treatment periods. On being asked the TPQ, 75% of patients (n=108) decided to continue treatment with tadalafil, in particular because it made it possible to have an erection many hours after taking the medication (first or second preference reason for 64.8% of patients), while 25% (n=36) preferred sildenafil (p=0.001). Both drugs improved the IIEF-EF and SEP scores compared to baseline, with a slightly but significantly greater improvement with tadalafil for both parameters. CONCLUSIONS. Tadalafil and sildenafil are both effective and well tolerated. Most of the patients prefer tadalafil thanks to the possibility of having sexual intercourse many hours after taking the medication. 45. Spleen rupture: an unusual postoperative complication after laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard in the surgical treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis and other benign gallbladder diseases. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy isn't devoid by some complications such as intra and post-operative bleeding, biliary injury, bile leakage, surgical site infection, port-site hernia and visceral injury. After an extensive literature research, we find only one case study in which the patients required a splenectomy after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. We present a case of uneventful laparoscopic cholecystectomy requiring an open splenectomy during the postoperative course. CASE REPORT: The Authors report a case of ruptured spleen during the second post-operative day after an uncomplicated laparoscopic cholecystectomy. At 36 hours after the operation, the patient referred a sudden upper abdominal pain. We performed a splenectomy, intra-abdominal lavage and two drainages have been placed. The patient was discarged in the 7th post-operative day in good clinical condition. CONCLUSION: As best of our Knowledge we report the second case of spleen rupture after a cholecystectomy, which is reported in the literature. We think that the splenic injury should not be due to direct trauma after or at the time of cholecystectomy, but it should be due to some adherences stretched by the pneumoperitoneum induction. 46. Cervical vagal schwannoma: single case report

Abstract

Schwannomas of the cervical vagal nerve are rare neoplasms, usually occurring between the third and the sixth decade of life. They don't demonstrate any sex predilection, and they often present as slow-growing, palpable neck masses, leftright sided, without early neurological symptoms, and they are often confused with enlarged lymphnodes or lipomas. Several differential diagnosis should be considered. Imaging techniques are largely used to define their etiology. If they are considered primary to evaluate their relationship with surrounding structures (i.e. omolateral neck vessels and nerves, oesophagus, trachea), they don't always result decisive for a correct differential diagnosis. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice: when technically possible, nerve sparing technique has to be preferred to en-bloc resection, because of the possibility of neurological outcomes such as dysphonia, dysphagia, hoarseness, vocal cord paralysis after surgical therapy. We report our case about a 34 years-old male, evaluating differential diagnosis course, choosing the correct therapy in relation with literature cases, and including new techniques for post-operative outcomes, such as injectable soft-tissue bulking agent performed in the last years to ameliorate dysphonia after nerve trunk injury.
