Search

Galaxy interactions can significantly affect the star formation in galaxies, but it remains a challenge to achieve a consensus on the star formation rate (SFR) enhancement in galaxy pairs. Here, we investigate the SFR enhancement of gas-rich galaxy pairs detected by the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY). We construct a sample of 278 paired galaxies spanning a stellar mass ($M_\ast$) range from $10^{7.6}$ to $10^{11.2}M_\odot$. We obtain individual masses of atomic hydrogen (HI) for these paired galaxies, using a novel deblending algorithm for HI data cubes. Quantifying the interaction stages and strengths with parameters motivated by first principles, we find that at fixed stellar and HI mass, the alteration in SFR of galaxy pairs starts when their dark matter halos encounter. For galaxies with stellar mass lower than $10^9M_\odot$, their SFRs show tentative suppression of 1.4 sigma after the halo encounter, and then become enhanced when their HI disks overlap, regardless of mass ratios. In contrast, the SFRs of galaxies with $M_\ast > 10^9M_\odot$ increase monotonically toward smaller projected distances and radial velocity offsets. When a close companion is present, a pronounced SFR enhancement is found for the most HI-poor high-mass galaxies in our sample. Collecting the observational evidence, we provide a coherent picture of the evolution of galaxy pairs, and discuss how the tidal effects and hydrodynamic processes shape the SFR enhancement. We present the first comprehensive census of the satellite population around a Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) stellar-mass galaxy, as part of the Magellanic Analog Dwarf Companions and Stellar Halos (MADCASH) survey. We have surveyed NGC 2403 (D=3.0 Mpc) with the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam imager out to a projected radius of 90 kpc (with partial coverage extending out to ~110 kpc, or ~80% of the virial radius of NGC 2403), resolving stars in the uppermost ~2.5 mags of its red giant branch. By looking for stellar overdensities in the red giant branch spatial density map, we identify 149 satellite candidates, of which only the previously discovered MADCASH J074238+65201-dw is a bona fide dwarf, together with the more massive and disrupting satellite DDO 44. We carefully assess the completeness of our search via injection of artificial dwarf galaxies into the images, finding that we are reliably sensitive to candidates down to M_V ~ -7.5 mag (and somewhat sensitive to even fainter satellites). A comparison of the satellite luminosity function of NGC 2403 down to this magnitude limit to theoretical expectations shows overall good agreement. We present the results from the neutral hydrogen (HI) follow-up survey of 378 optically-detected UDG candidates from the Systematically Measuring Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (SMUDGes) survey using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We detect HI in 110 targets and determine 37 to be UDGs and 73 to be low surface brightness (LSB) dwarfs based on their effective radii and central surface brightnesses. In line with previous studies, we find that: i) our HI detections have on average bluer $g-r$ colors and more irregular morphologies than our HI non-detections, ii) our HI detections populate the tail end of the star-forming main sequence from the ALFALFA catalog with marginally lower specific star formation rates, and iii) HI detections are mostly in relatively isolated (i.e. field) environments, while most non-detections have at least one nearby neighbor in projection. We find that the HI mass to stellar mass ratios (i.e. gas richnesses) scale with the physical sizes for UDGs and LSB dwarfs alike, suggesting that mechanisms other than bursty star formation feedback may be at play for UDGs. However, we find a stronger trend between gas richnesses and physical sizes if we define UDGs using their effective surface brightness instead of their central surface brightness. We are in the process of using this unprecedented sample of UDG candidates to carry out detailed follow-up studies (i.e. star-formation and environmental analysis, comparisons to simulations) and are obtaining resolved HI observations for several of them., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journals. We report the discovery of Corvus A, a low-mass, gas-rich galaxy at a distance of approximately 3.5 Mpc, identified in DR10 of the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Imaging Survey during the initial phase of our ongoing SEmi-Automated Machine LEarning Search for Semi-resolved galaxies (SEAMLESS). Jansky Very Large Array observations of Corvus A detect HI line emission at a radial velocity of $523\pm2$ km/s. Magellan/Megacam imaging reveals an irregular and complex stellar population with both young and old stars. We detect UV emission in Neil Gehrels Swift observations, indicative of recent star formation. However, there are no signs of HII regions in H$\alpha$ imaging from Steward Observatory's Kuiper telescope. Based on the Megacam color magnitude diagram we measure the distance to Corvus A via the tip-of-the-red-giant-branch standard candle as $3.48\pm0.24$ Mpc. This makes Corvus A remarkably isolated, with no known galaxy within $\sim$1 Mpc. Based on this distance, we estimate the HI and stellar mass of Corvus A to be $\log M_\mathrm{HI}/\mathrm{M_\odot} = 6.59$ and $\log M_\ast/\mathrm{M_\odot} = 6.0$. Although there are some signs of rotation, the HI distribution of Corvus A appears to be close to face-on, analogous to that of Leo T, and we therefore do not attempt to infer a dynamical mass from its HI line width. Higher resolution synthesis imaging is required to confirm this morphology and to draw robust conclusions from its gas kinematics., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

We have discovered the stellar counterpart to the ALFALFA Virgo 7 cloud complex, which has been thought to be optically dark and nearly star-free since its discovery in 2007. This ~190 kpc long chain of enormous atomic gas clouds ($M_\mathrm{HI} \sim 10^9 \; \mathrm{M_\odot}$) is embedded in the hot intracluster medium of the Virgo galaxy cluster but is isolated from any galaxy. Its faint, blue stellar counterpart, BC6, was identified in a visual search of archival optical and UV imaging. Follow-up observations with the Green Bank Telescope, Hobby-Eberly Telescope, and Hubble Space Telescope demonstrate that this faint counterpart is at the same velocity as the atomic gas, is actively forming stars, and is metal-rich ($12 + \mathrm{(O/H)} = 8.58 \pm 0.25$). We estimate its stellar mass to be only $\log ( M_\ast/\mathrm{M_\odot}) \sim 4.4$, making it one of the most gas-rich stellar systems known. Aside from its extraordinary gas content, the properties of BC6 are entirely consistent with those of a recently identified class of young, low-mass, isolated, and star-forming clouds in Virgo, that appear to have formed via extreme ram pressure stripping events. We expand the existing discussion of the origin of this structure and suggest NGC 4522 as a likely candidate, however, the current evidence is not fully consistent with any of our proposed progenitor galaxies. We anticipate that other "dark" gas clouds in Virgo may have similarly faint, star-forming counterparts. We have conducted a systematic search around the Milky Way (MW) analog NGC 253 (D=3.5 Mpc), as a part of the Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor (PISCeS) - a Magellan+Megacam survey to identify dwarfs and other substructures in resolved stellar light around MW-mass galaxies outside of the Local Group. In total, NGC 253 has five satellites identified by PISCeS within 100 kpc with an absolute V-band magnitude $M_V<-7$. We have additionally obtained deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of four reported candidates beyond the survey footprint: Do III, Do IV, and dw0036m2828 are confirmed to be satellites of NGC 253, while SculptorSR is found to be a background galaxy. We find no convincing evidence for the presence of a plane of satellites surrounding NGC 253. We construct its satellite luminosity function, which is complete down to $M_V$$\lesssim$$-8$ out to 100 kpc and $M_V$$\lesssim$$-9$ out to 300 kpc, and compare it to those calculated for other Local Volume galaxies. Exploring trends in satellite counts and star-forming fractions among satellite systems, we find relationships with host stellar mass, environment, and morphology, pointing to a complex picture of satellite formation, and a successful model has to reproduce all of these trends., Comment: Submitted to AAS Journal. We present new follow-up observations of two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) selected for their distorted morphologies and tidal features, suggestive of tidal influence. Using Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys F555W and F814W imaging, we identify $8\pm2$ globular clusters (GCs) in KUG 0203-Dw1 and $6\pm2$ in KDG 013, abundances typical for normal dwarf galaxies of similar stellar mass. Jansky Very Large Array data reveal a clear HI detection of KUG 0203-Dw1 with a gas mass estimate of $\log{M_{\rm{HI}}/M_{\odot}}\lesssim 7.4$ and evidence of active stripping by the host, while KDG 013 has no clear gas detection. The UDGs likely originated as normal dwarf galaxies that have been subjected to significant stripping and tidal heating, causing them to become more diffuse. These two UDGs complete a sample of five exhibiting tidal features in the full Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey area (CFHTLS; $\sim150^{2}$ deg). These tidally influenced UDGs exhibit diversse properties; one stands out as a potential result of a dwarf merger, while the remainder suggest tidal heating origins. We also cannot conclusively rule out that these galaxies became UDGs in the field before processing by the group environment, underscoring the need for broader searches of diffuse galaxies to better understand the impact of galaxy interactions., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We have imaged the entirety of eight (plus one partial) Milky Way-like satellite systems, a total of 42 (45) satellites, from the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) II catalog in both H$\alpha$ and HI with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the Jansky Very Large Array. In these eight systems we have identified four cases where a satellite appears to be currently undergoing ram pressure stripping (RPS) as its HI gas collides with the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of its host. We also see a clear suppression of gas fraction ($M_\mathrm{HI}/M_\ast$) with decreasing (projected) satellite--host separation; to our knowledge, the first time this has been observed in a sample of Milky Way-like systems. Comparisons to the Auriga, APOSTLE, and TNG50 cosmological zoom-in simulations show consistent global behavior, but they systematically under-predict gas fractions across all satellites by roughly 0.5 dex. Using a simplistic RPS model we estimate the average peak CGM density that satellites in these systems have encountered to be $\log \rho_\mathrm{cgm}/\mathrm{g\,cm^{-3}} \approx -27.3$. Furthermore, we see tentative evidence that these satellites are following a specific star formation rate-to-gas fraction relation that is distinct from field galaxies. Finally, we detect one new gas-rich satellite in the UGC903 system with an optical size and surface brightness meeting the standard criteria to be considered an ultra-diffuse galaxy., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Almost Dark Galaxies are objects that have eluded detection by traditional surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The low surface brightness of these galaxies ($\mu_r$(0)$>26$ mag/arcsec^2), and hence their low surface stellar mass density (a few solar masses per pc^2 or less), suggests that the energy density released by baryonic feedback mechanisms is inefficient in modifying the distribution of the dark matter halos they inhabit. For this reason, almost dark galaxies are particularly promising for probing the microphysical nature of dark matter. In this paper, we present the serendipitous discovery of Nube, an almost dark galaxy with $<\mu_V>$e~ 26.7 mag/arcsec^2. The galaxy was identified using deep optical imaging from the IAC Stripe82 Legacy Project. Follow-up observations with the 100m Green Bank Telescope strongly suggest that the galaxy is at a distance of 107 Mpc. Ultra-deep multi-band observations with the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias favour an age of ~10 Gyr and a metallicity of [Fe/H]$\sim-1.1$. With a stellar mass of ~4x10^8 Msun and a half-mass radius of Re=6.9 kpc (corresponding to an effective surface density of ~0.9 Msun/pc^2), Nube is the most massive and extended object of its kind discovered so far. The galaxy is ten times fainter and has an effective radius three times larger than typical ultra-diffuse galaxies with similar stellar masses. Galaxies with comparable effective surface brightness within the Local Group have very low mass (~10^5 Msun) and compact structures (effective radius Re<1 kpc). Current cosmological simulations within the cold dark matter scenario, including baryonic feedback, do not reproduce the structural properties of Nube. However, its highly extended and flattened structure is consistent with a scenario where the dark matter particles are ultra-light axions with a mass of m$_B$=($0.8^{+0.4}_{-0.2}$)$\times10^{-23}$ eV.}, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. It has been shown in previous publications that the TNG100 simulation quantitatively reproduces the observed reduction in each of the total atomic and total molecular hydrogen gas for galaxies within massive halos, i.e.~dense environments. In this Letter, we study how well TNG50 reproduces the resolved effects of a Virgo-like cluster environment on the gas surface densities of satellite galaxies with $m_* > \! 10^9\,{\rm M}_\odot$ and ${\rm SFR} \! > 0.05\,{\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. We select galaxies in the simulation that are analogous to those in the HERACLES and VERTICO surveys, and mock-observe them to the common specifications of the data. Although TNG50 does not quantitatively match the observed gas surface densities in the centers of galaxies, the simulation does qualitatively reproduce the trends of gas truncation and central density suppression seen in VERTICO in both HI and H$_2$. This result promises that modern cosmological hydrodynamic simulations can be used to reliably model the post-infall histories of cluster satellite galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted in ApJL

We report the discovery of Pavo, a faint ($M_V = -10.0$), star-forming, irregular, and extremely isolated dwarf galaxy at $D\approx2$ Mpc. Pavo was identified in Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey imaging via a novel approach that combines low surface brightness galaxy search algorithms and machine learning candidate classifications. Follow-up imaging with the Inamori-Magellan Areal Camera & Spectrograph on the 6.5 m Magellan Baade telescope revealed a color--magnitude diagram (CMD) with an old stellar population, in addition to the young population that dominates the integrated light, and a tip-of-the-red-giant-branch distance estimate of $1.99^{+0.20}_{-0.22}$ Mpc. The blue population of stars in the CMD is consistent with the youngest stars having formed no later than 150 Myr ago. We also detected no H$\alpha$ emission with SOAR telescope imaging, suggesting we may be witnessing a temporary low in Pavo's star formation. We estimate the total stellar mass of Pavo to be $\log M_\ast/\mathrm{M_\odot} = 5.6 \pm 0.2$ and measure an upper limit on its HI gas mass of $1.0 \times 10^6\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ based on the HIPASS survey. Given these properties, Pavo's closest analog is Leo P ($D=1.6$ Mpc), previously the only known isolated, star-forming, Local Volume dwarf galaxy in this mass range. However, Pavo appears to be even more isolated, with no other known galaxy residing within over 600 kpc. We present results from wide-field imaging of the resolved stellar populations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Cassiopeia III (And XXXII) and Perseus I (And XXXIII), two satellites in the outer stellar halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). Our WIYN pODI photometry traces the red giant star population in each galaxy to ~2.5-3 half-light radii from the galaxy center. We use the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method to derive distances of (m-M)_0 = 24.62+/-0.12 mag (839 (+48,-450) kpc, or 156 (+16,-13) kpc from M31) for Cas III and 24.47+/-0.13 mag (738 (+48,-45) kpc, or 351 (+17,-16) kpc from M31) for Per I. These values are consistent within the errors with TRGB distances derived from a deeper Hubble Space Telescope study of the galaxies' inner regions. For each galaxy, we derive structural parameters, total magnitude, and central surface brightness. We also place upper limits on the ratio of neutral hydrogen gas mass to optical luminosity, confirming the gas-poor nature of both galaxies. We combine our data set with corresponding data for the M31 satellite galaxy Lacerta I (And XXXI) from earlier work, and search for substructure within the RGB star populations of Cas III, Per I, and Lac I. We find an overdense region on the west side of Lac I at a significance level of 2.5-3-sigma and a low-significance filament extending in the direction of M31. In Cas III, we identify two modestly significant overdensities near the center of the galaxy and another at two half-light radii. Per I shows no evidence for substructure in its RGB star population, which may reflect this galaxy's isolated nature., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables. We study how environment regulates the star formation cycle of 33 Virgo Cluster satellite galaxies on 720 parsec scales. We present the first resolved star-forming main sequence for cluster galaxies, dividing the sample based on their global HI properties and comparing to a control sample of field galaxies. HI-poor cluster galaxies have reduced star formation rate (SFR) surface densities with respect to both HI-normal cluster and field galaxies (0.5 dex), suggesting that mechanisms regulating the global HI content are responsible for quenching local star formation. We demonstrate that the observed quenching in HI-poor galaxies is caused by environmental processes such as ram pressure stripping (RPS) simultaneously reducing molecular gas surface density and star formation efficiency (SFE), compared to regions in HI-normal systems (by 0.38 and 0.22 dex, respectively). We observe systematically elevated SFRs that are driven by increased molecular gas surface densities at fixed stellar mass surface density in the outskirts of early-stage RPS galaxies, while SFE remains unchanged with respect to the field sample. We quantify how RPS and starvation affect the star formation cycle of inner and outer galaxy discs as they are processed by the cluster. We show both are effective quenching mechanisms with the key difference being that RPS acts upon the galaxy outskirts while starvation regulates the star formation cycle throughout disc, including within the truncation radius. We investigate the ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) UGC 9050-Dw1, which was selected because of its disturbed morphology as part of a larger sample of UDGs that display evidence for significant interactions. We use the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys to identify globular clusters (GCs) associated with UGC 9050-Dw1, and the Jansky Very Large Array to measure its $\mathrm{H}\mathrm{I}$ content. UGC 9050-Dw1, a neighbor to the low surface brightness spiral UGC 9050, exhibits a unique UV bright central ``clump'' with clearly associated $\mathrm{H}{\mathrm{I}}$ gas and an extended stellar tidal plume to the north. We identify $52^{+4}_{-6}$ GCs, implying a specific frequency $S_\mathrm{N} = 122_{-24}^{+30}$, one of the highest reported for a UDG of this luminosity. Additionally, $\sim 20\%$ of the total light of the galaxy is contributed by GCs. Nearly uniform GC colors suggest they were formed during a single intense episode of star formation. We propose that UGC 9050-Dw1 formed via a rare dwarf merger event where induced, clumpy star formation led to its current observed properties., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, published in ApJL

We present the completed catalog of ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates (7070 objects) from our search of the DR9 Legacy Survey images, including distance and total mass estimates for 1529 and 1436 galaxies, respectively, that we provide and describe in detail. From the sample with estimated distances, we obtain a sample of 585 UDGs ($\mu_{0,g} \ge 24$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and $r_e \ge 1.5$ kpc) over 20,000 sq. deg of sky in various environments. We conclude that UDGs in our sample are limited to $10^{10} \lesssim$ M$_h$/M$_\odot \lesssim 10^{11.5}$ and are on average a factor of 1.5 to 7 deficient in stars relative to the general population of galaxies of the same total mass. That factor increases with increasing galaxy size and mass up to a factor of $\sim$10 when the total mass of the UDG increases beyond M$_h = 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$. We analyze cold-gas distributions in Virgo cluster galaxies using resolved CO(2-1) (tracing molecular hydrogen, H2) and HI observations from the Virgo Environment Traced In CO (VERTICO) and the VLA Imaging of Virgo in Atomic Gas (VIVA) surveys. From a theoretical perspective, it is expected that environmental processes in clusters will have a stronger influence on diffuse atomic gas compared to the relatively dense molecular gas component, and that these environmental perturbations can compress the cold interstellar medium in cluster galaxies leading to elevated star formation. In this work we observationally test these predictions for star-forming satellite galaxies within the Virgo cluster. We divide our Virgo galaxy sample into HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated classes and show, unsurprisingly, that the HI-tailed galaxies have the largest quantitative HI asymmetries. We also compare to a control sample of non-cluster galaxies and find that Virgo galaxies, on average, have HI asymmetries that are 40 +/- 10 per cent larger than the control. There is less separation between control, HI-normal, HI-tailed, and HI-truncated galaxies in terms of H2 asymmetries, and on average, Virgo galaxies have H2 asymmetries that are only marginally (20 +/- 10 per cent) larger than the control sample. We find a weak correlation between HI and H2 asymmetries over our entire sample, but a stronger correlation for those specific galaxies being strongly impacted by environmental perturbations. Finally, we divide the discs of the HI-tailed Virgo galaxies into a leading half and trailing half according to the observed tail direction. We find evidence for excess molecular gas mass on the leading halves of the disc. We present an intriguing, serendipitously-detected system consisting of an S0/a galaxy, which we refer to as the "Kite", and a highly-collimated tail of gas and stars that extends over 380 kpc and contains pockets of star formation. In its length, narrowness, and linearity the Kite's tail is an extreme example relative to known tails. The Kite (PGC 1000273) has a companion galaxy, Mrk 0926 (PGC 070409), which together comprise a binary galaxy system in which both galaxies host active galactic nuclei. Despite this systems being previously searched for signs of tidal interactions, the tail had not been discovered prior to our identification as part of the validation process of the SMUDGes survey for low surface brightness galaxies. We confirm the kinematic association between various H$\alpha$ knots along the tail, a small galaxy, and the Kite galaxy using optical spectroscopy obtained with the Magellan telescope and measure a velocity gradient along the tail. The Kite shares characteristics common to those formed via ram pressure stripping ("jellyfish" galaxies) and formed via tidal interactions. However, both scenarios face significant challenges that we discuss, leaving open the question of how such an extreme tail formed. We present the first measurement of the HI mass function (HIMF) using data from MeerKAT, based on 276 direct detections from the MIGHTEE Survey Early Science data covering a period of approximately a billion years ($0 \leq z \leq 0.084 $). This is the first HIMF measured using interferometric data over non-group or cluster field, i.e. a deep blank field. We constrain the parameters of the Schechter function which describes the HIMF with two different methods: $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ and Modified Maximum Likelihood (MML). We find a low-mass slope $\alpha=-1.29^{+0.37}_{-0.26}$, `knee' mass $\log_{10}(M_{*}/{\rm M_{\odot}}) = 10.07^{+0.24}_{-0.24}$ and normalisation $\log_{10}(\phi_{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.34^{+0.32}_{-0.36}$ ($H_0 = 67.4$ kms$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$) for $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ and $\alpha=-1.44^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$, `knee' mass $\log_{10}(M_{*}/{\rm M_{\odot}}) = 10.22^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$ and normalisation $\log_{10}(\phi_{*}/\rm Mpc^{-3})=-2.52^{+0.19}_{-0.14}$ for MML. When using $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ we find both the low-mass slope and `knee' mass to be consistent within $1\sigma$ with previous studies based on single-dish surveys. The cosmological mass density of HI is found to be slightly larger than previously reported: $\Omega_{\rm HI}=5.46^{+0.94}_{-0.99} \times 10^{-4}h^{-1}_{67.4}$ from $1/\rm V_{\rm max}$ and $\Omega_{\rm HI}=6.31^{+0.31}_{-0.31} \times 10^{-4}h^{-1}_{67.4}$ from MML but consistent within the uncertainties. Combining new HI data from a synergetic survey of ASKAP WALLABY and FAST with the ALFALFA data, we study the effect of ram pressure and tidal interactions in the NGC 4636 group. We develop two parameters to quantify and disentangle these two effects on gas stripping in HI-bearing galaxies: the strength of external forces at the optical-disk edge, and the outside-in extents of HI-disk stripping. We find that gas stripping is widespread in this group, affecting 80% of HI-detected non-merging galaxies, and that 41% are experiencing both types of stripping. Among the galaxies experiencing both effects, the two types of strengths are independent, while two HI-stripping extents moderately anticorrelate with each other. Both strengths are correlated with HI-disk shrinkage. The tidal strength is related to a rather uniform reddening of low-mass galaxies ($M_*<10^9\,\text{M}_\odot$) when tidal stripping is the dominating effect. In contrast, ram pressure is not clearly linked to the color-changing patterns of galaxies in the group. Combining these two stripping extents, we estimate the total stripping extent, and put forward an empirical model that can describe the decrease of HI richness as galaxies fall toward the group center. The stripping timescale we derived decreases with distance to the center, from $\mathord{\sim}1\,\text{Gyr}$ beyond $R_{200}$ to $\mathord{\lesssim}10\,\text{Myr}$ near the center. Gas-depletion happens $\mathord{\sim}3\,\text{Gyr}$ since crossing $2R_{200}$ for HI-rich galaxies, but much quicker for HI-poor ones. The quenching of cluster satellite galaxies is inextricably linked to the suppression of their cold interstellar medium (ISM) by environmental mechanisms. While the removal of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) at large radii is well studied, how the environment impacts the remaining gas in the centres of galaxies, which are dominated by molecular gas, is less clear. Using new observations from the Virgo Environment traced in CO survey (VERTICO) and archival HI data, we study the HI and molecular gas within the optical discs of Virgo cluster galaxies on 1.2-kpc scales with spatially resolved scaling relations between stellar (${\Sigma}_{\star}$), HI (${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$), and molecular gas (${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$) surface densities. Adopting HI deficiency as a measure of environmental impact, we find evidence that, in addition to removing the HI at large radii, the cluster processes also lower the average ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ of the remaining gas even in the central 1.2 kpc. The impact on molecular gas is comparatively weaker than on the HI, and we show that the lower ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ gas is removed first. In the most HI-deficient galaxies, however, we find evidence that environmental processes reduce the typical ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ of the remaining gas by nearly a factor of 3. We find no evidence for environment-driven elevation of ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ or ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$ in HI-deficient galaxies. Using the ratio of ${\Sigma}_\mathrm{mol}$-to-${\Sigma}_\mathrm{HI}$ in individual regions, we show that changes in the ISM physical conditions, estimated using the total gas surface density and midplane hydrostatic pressure, cannot explain the observed reduction in molecular gas content. Galaxy morphology in atomic hydrogen (HI) and in the ultra-violet (UV) are closely linked. This has motivated their combined use to quantify morphology over the full H i disk for both H i and UV imaging. We apply galaxy morphometrics: Concentration, Asymmetry, Gini, M20 and Multimode-Intensity-Deviation statistics to the first moment-0 maps of the WALLABY survey of galaxies in the Hydra cluster center. Taking advantage of this new HI survey, we apply the same morphometrics over the full HI extent on archival GALEX FUV and NUV data to explore how well HI truncated, extended ultraviolet disk (XUV) and other morphological phenomena can be captured using pipeline WALLABY data products. Extended HI and UV disks can be identified relatively straightforward from their respective concentration. Combined with WALLABY HI, even the shallowest GALEX data is sufficient to identify XUV disks. Our second goal is to isolate galaxies undergoing ram-pressure stripping in the H i morphometric space. We employ four different machine learning techniques, a decision tree, a k-nearest neighbour, a support-vector machine, and a random forest. We examine the HI gas kinematics of galaxy pairs in two clusters and a group using Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) WALLABY pilot survey observations. We compare the HI properties of galaxy pair candidates in the Hydra I and Norma clusters, and the NGC 4636 group, with those of non-paired control galaxies selected in the same fields. We perform HI profile decomposition of the sample galaxies using a tool, {\sc baygaud} which allows us to de-blend a line-of-sight velocity profile with an optimal number of Gaussian components. We construct HI super-profiles of the sample galaxies via stacking of their line profiles after aligning the central velocities. We fit a double Gaussian model to the super-profiles and classify them as kinematically narrow and broad components with respect to their velocity dispersions. Additionally, we investigate the gravitational instability of HI gas disks of the sample galaxies using Toomre Q parameters and HI morphological disturbances. We investigate the effect of the cluster environment on the HI properties of galaxy pairs by dividing the cluster environment into three subcluster regions (i.e., outskirts, infalling and central regions). We find that the denser cluster environment (i.e., infalling and central regions) is likely to impact the HI gas properties of galaxies in a way of decreasing the amplitude of the kinematically narrow HI gas ($M_{\rm{narrow}}^{\rm{HI}}$/$M_{\rm{total}}^{\rm{HI}}$), and increasing the Toomre Q values of the infalling and central galaxies. We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging of 14 gas-rich, low surface brightness galaxies in the field at distances of 25-36 Mpc, with mean effective radii and $g$-band central surface brightnesses of 1.9 kpc and 24.2 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. Nine meet the standard criteria to be considered ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). An inspection of point-like sources brighter than the turnover magnitude of the globular cluster luminosity function and within twice the half-light radii of each galaxy reveals that, unlike those in denser environments, gas-rich, field UDGs host very few old globular clusters (GCs). Most of the targets (nine) have zero candidate GCs, with the remainder having one or two candidates each. These findings are broadly consistent with expectations for normal dwarf galaxies of similar stellar mass. This rules out gas-rich, field UDGs as potential progenitors of the GC-rich UDGs that are typically found in galaxy clusters. However, some in galaxy groups may be directly accreted from the field. In line with other recent results, this strongly suggests that there must be at least two distinct formation pathways for UDGs, and that this sub-population is simply an extreme low surface brightness extension of the underlying dwarf galaxy population. The root cause of their diffuse stellar distributions remains unclear, but the formation mechanism appears to only impact the distribution of stars (and potentially dark matter), without strongly impacting the distribution of neutral gas, the overall stellar mass, or the number of GCs., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

The WALLABY pilot survey has been conducted using the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). The integrated 21-cm HI line spectra are formed in a very different manner compared to usual single-dish spectra Tully-Fisher measurements. It is thus extremely important to ensure that slight differences (e.g. biases due to missing flux) are quantified and understood in order to maximise the use of the large amount of data becoming available soon. This article is based on four fields for which the data are scientifically interesting by themselves. The pilot data discussed here consist of 614 galaxy spectra at a rest wavelength of 21cm. Of these spectra, 472 are of high enough quality to be used to potentially derive distances using the Tully-Fisher relation. We further restrict the sample to the 251 galaxies whose inclination is sufficiently close to edge-on. For these, we derive Tully-Fisher distances using the deprojected WALLABY velocity widths combined with infrared (WISE W1) magnitudes. The resulting Tully-Fisher distances for the Eridanus, Hydra, Norma and NGC 4636 clusters are 21.5, 53.5, 69.4 and 23.0 Mpc respectively, with uncertainties of 5--10\%, which are better or equivalent to the ones obtained in studies using data obtained with giant single dish telescopes. The pilot survey data show the benefits of WALLABY over previous giant single-dish telescope surveys. WALLABY is expected to detect around half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of $z = 0.05 (200 Mpc)$. We measure the molecular-to-atomic gas ratio, $R_{\rm mol}$, and the star formation rate (SFR) per unit molecular gas mass, SFE$_{\rm mol}$, in 38 nearby galaxies selected from the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey. We determine their scale-lengths for the molecular and stellar components and find a roughly 3:5 ratio between them compared to $\sim$1:1 in field galaxies, indicating that the CO emission is more centrally concentrated than the stars. We compute $R_{\rm mol}$ as a function of different physical quantities. While the spatially-resolved $R_{\rm mol}$ on average decreases with increasing radius, we find that the mean molecular-to-atomic gas ratio within the stellar effective radius $R_{\rm e}$, $R_{\rm mol}(r

We study the relative fractions of quenched and star-forming satellite galaxies in the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA) survey and Exploration of Local VolumE Satellites (ELVES) program, two nearby and complementary samples of Milky Way-like galaxies that take different approaches to identify faint satellite galaxy populations. We cross-check and validate sample cuts and selection criteria, as well as explore the effects of different star-formation definitions when determining the quenched satellite fraction of Milky Way analogs. We find the mean ELVES quenched fraction ($\langle QF\rangle$), derived using a specific star formation rate (sSFR) threshold, decreases from $\sim$50% to $\sim$27% after applying a cut in absolute magnitude to match that of the SAGA survey ($\langle QF\rangle_{SAGA}\sim$9%). We show these results are consistent for alternative star-formation definitions. Furthermore, these quenched fractions remain virtually unchanged after applying an additional cut in surface brightness. Using a consistently-derived sSFR and absolute magnitude limit for both samples, we show that the quenched fraction and the cumulative number of satellites in the ELVES and SAGA samples broadly agree. We briefly explore radial trends in the ELVES and SAGA samples, finding general agreement in the number of star-forming satellites per host as a function of radius. The classical globular clusters found in all galaxy types have half-light radii of $r_{\rm h} \sim$ 2-4 pc, which have been tied to formation in the dense cores of giant molecular clouds. Some old star clusters have larger sizes, and it is unclear if these represent a fundamentally different mode of low-density star cluster formation. We report the discovery of a rare, young "faint fuzzy" star cluster, NGC 247-SC1, on the outskirts of the low-mass spiral galaxy NGC 247 in the nearby Sculptor group, and measure its radial velocity using Keck spectroscopy. We use Hubble Space Telescope imaging to measure the cluster half-light radius of $r_{\rm h} \simeq 12$ pc and a luminosity of $L_V \simeq 4\times10^5 \mathrm{L}_\odot$. We produce a colour-magnitude diagram of cluster stars and compare to theoretical isochrones, finding an age of $\simeq$ 300 Myr, a metallicity of [$Z$/H] $\sim -0.6$ and an inferred mass of $M_\star \simeq 9\times10^4 \mathrm{M}_\odot$. The narrow width of blue-loop star magnitudes implies an age spread of $\lesssim$ 50 Myr, while no old red-giant branch stars are found, so SC1 is consistent with hosting a single stellar population, modulo several unexplained bright "red straggler" stars. SC1 appears to be surrounded by tidal debris, at the end of a $\sim$ 2 kpc long stellar filament that also hosts two low-mass, low-density clusters of a similar age. While dwarf galaxies observed in the field are overwhelmingly star-forming, dwarf galaxies in environments as dense or denser than the Milky Way are overwhelmingly quenched. In this paper, we explore quenching in the lower density environment of the Small-Magellanic-Cloud-mass galaxy NGC 3109 ($\text{M}_* \sim 10^8 \, \text{M}_\odot$), which hosts two known dwarf satellite galaxies (Antlia and Antlia B), both of which are HI deficient compared to similar galaxies in the field and have recently stopped forming stars. Using a new semi-analytic model in concert with the measured star formation histories and gas masses of the two dwarf satellite galaxies, we show that they could not have been quenched solely by direct ram pressure stripping of their interstellar media, as is common in denser environments. Instead, we find that separation of the satellites from pristine gas inflows, coupled with stellar-feedback-driven outflows from the satellites (jointly referred to as the starvation quenching model), can quench the satellites on timescales consistent with their likely infall times into NGC 3109's halo. It is currently believed that starvation is caused by "weak" ram pressure that prevents low-density, weakly-bound gas from being accreted onto the dwarf satellite, but cannot directly remove the denser interstellar medium. This suggests that star-formation-driven outflows serve two purposes in quenching satellites in low-mass environments: outflows from the host form a low-density circumgalactic medium that cannot directly strip the interstellar media from its satellites, but is sufficient to remove loosely-bound gaseous outflows from the dwarf satellites driven by their own star formation., Comment: 20 pages and 2 appendices. We present the first measurements of HI galaxy scaling relations from a blind survey at $z>0.15$. We perform spectral stacking of 9023 spectra of star-forming galaxies undetected in HI at $0.23

We present neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) observations using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) along the lines of sight to 49 dwarf satellite galaxy candidates around eight Local Volume systems (M104, M51, NGC1023, NGC1156, NGC2903, NGC4258, NGC4565, NGC4631). We detect the HI reservoirs of two candidates (dw0934+2204 and dw1238$-$1122) and confirm them as background sources relative to their nearest foreground host systems. The remaining 47 satellite candidates are not detected in HI, and we place stringent $5\sigma$ upper limits on their HI mass. We note that some (15/47) of our non-detections stem from satellites being occluded by their putative host's HI emission. In addition to these new observations, we compile literature estimates on the HI mass for an additional 17 satellites. We compare the HI properties of these satellites to those within the Local Group, finding broad agreement between them. Crucially, these observations probe a ``transition'' region between $-10\gtrsim M_V \gtrsim -14$ where we see a mixture of gas-rich and gas-poor satellites and where quenching processes shift from longer timescales (i.e. via starvation) to shorter ones (i.e. via stripping). While there are many gas-poor satellites within this region, some are gas rich and this suggests that the transition towards predominantly gas-rich satellites occurs at $L_{V}\sim10^{7}L_{\odot}$, in line with simulations. In this VERTICO early science paper we explore in detail how environmental mechanisms, identified in HI, affect the resolved properties of molecular gas reservoirs in cluster galaxies. The molecular gas is probed using ALMA ACA (+TP) observations of 12CO(2-1) in 51 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster (of which 49 are detected), all of which are included in the VIVA HI survey. The sample spans a stellar mass range of 9 < log M*/Msol < 11. We study molecular gas radial profiles, isodensity radii, and surface densities as a function of galaxy HI deficiency and morphology. There is a weak correlation between global HI and H2 deficiencies, and resolved properties of molecular gas correlate with HI deficiency: galaxies that have large HI deficiencies have relatively steep and truncated molecular gas radial profiles, which is due to the removal of low-surface density molecular gas on the outskirts. We present a catalog of 5598 ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates with effective radius $r_e > 5.3$ arcsec distributed throughout the southern portion of the DESI Legacy Imaging Survey covering $\sim$ 15000 deg$^2$. The catalog is most complete for physically large ($r_e > 2.5$ kpc) UDGs lying in the redshift range $1800 \lesssim cz/{\rm km\ s}^{-1} \lesssim 7000$, where the lower bound is defined by where incompleteness becomes significant for large objects on the sky and the upper bound by our minimum angular size selection criterion. Because physical size is integral to the definition of a UDG, we develop a method {of distance estimation} using existing redshift surveys. With three different galaxy samples, two of which contain UDGs with spectroscopic redshifts, we estimate that the method has a redshift accuracy of $\sim$ 75% when the method converges, although larger, more representative spectroscopic UDG samples are needed to fully understand the behavior of the method. We are able to estimate distances for 1079 of our UDG candidates (19%). Finally, to illustrate uses of the catalog, we present distance independent and dependent results. In the latter category we establish that the red sequence of UDGs lies on the extrapolation of the red sequence relation for bright ellipticals and that the environment-color relation is at least qualitatively similar to that of high surface brightness galaxies. We discuss five blue stellar systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster, analogous to the enigmatic object SECCO 1 (AGC 226067). These objects were identified based on their optical and UV morphology and followed up with HI observations with the VLA (and GBT), MUSE/VLT optical spectroscopy, and HST imaging. These new data indicate that one system is a distant group of galaxies. The remaining four are extremely low mass ($M_\ast \sim 10^5 \; \mathrm{M_\odot}$), are dominated by young, blue stars, have highly irregular and clumpy morphologies, are only a few kpc across, yet host an abundance of metal-rich, $12 + \log (\mathrm{O/H}) > 8.2$, HII regions. These high metallicities indicate that these stellar systems formed from gas stripped from much more massive galaxies. Despite the young age of their stellar populations, only one system is detected in HI, while the remaining three have minimal (if any) gas reservoirs. Furthermore, two systems are surprisingly isolated and have no plausible parent galaxy within $\sim$30' ($\sim$140 kpc). Although tidal stripping cannot be conclusively excluded as the formation mechanism of these objects, ram pressure stripping more naturally explains their properties, in particular their isolation, owing to the higher velocities, relative to the parent system, that can be achieved. Therefore, we posit that most of these systems formed from ram pressure stripped gas removed from new infalling cluster members, and survived in the intracluster medium long enough to become separated from their parent galaxies by hundreds of kiloparsecs, and that they thus represent a new type of stellar system., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We present the observed HI size-mass relation of $204$ galaxies from the MIGHTEE Survey Early Science data. The high sensitivity of MeerKAT allows us to detect galaxies spanning more than 4 orders of magnitude in HI mass, ranging from dwarf galaxies to massive spirals, and including all morphological types. This is the first time the relation has been explored on a blind homogeneous data set which extends over a previously unexplored redshift range of $0 < z < 0.084$, i.e. a period of around one billion years in cosmic time. The sample follows the same tight logarithmic relation derived from previous work, between the diameter ($D_{\rm HI}$) and the mass ($M_{\rm HI}$) of HI discs. We measure a slope of $0.501\pm 0.008$, an intercept of $-3.252^{+0.073}_{-0.074}$, and an observed scatter of $0.057$ dex. For the first time, we quantify the intrinsic scatter of $0.054 \pm 0.003$ dex (${\sim} 10 \%$), which provides a constraint for cosmological simulations of galaxy formation and evolution. We derive the relation as a function of galaxy type and find that their intrinsic scatters and slopes are consistent within the errors. We also calculate the $D_{\rm HI} - M_{\rm HI}$ relation for two redshift bins and do not find any evidence for evolution with redshift. These results suggest that over a period of one billion years in lookback time, galaxy discs have not undergone significant evolution in their gas distribution and mean surface mass density, indicating a lack of dependence on both morphological type and redshift., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the tidal interaction of galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup, using HI data from the pre-pilot survey of WALLABY (Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY). We obtain optical photometric measurements and quantify the strength of tidal perturbation using a tidal parameter $S_{sum}$. For low-mass galaxies of $M_* \lesssim 10^9 M_\odot$, we find a dependence of decreasing HI-to-optical disk size ratio with increasing $S_{sum}$, but no dependence of HI spectral line asymmetry with $S_{sum}$. This is consistent with the behavior expected under tidal stripping. We confirm that the color profile shape and color gradient depend on the stellar mass, but there is additional correlation of low-mass galaxies having their color gradients within $2R_{50}$ increasing with higher $S_{sum}$. For these low-mass galaxies, the dependence of color gradients on $S_{sum}$ is driven by color becoming progressively redder in the inner disk when tidal perturbations are stronger. For high-mass galaxies, there is no dependence of color gradients on $S_{sum}$, and we find a marginal reddening throughout the disks with increasing $S_{sum}$. We present H-alpha velocity maps for the HIghMass galaxies UGC 7899, UGC 8475, UGC 9037 and UGC 9334, obtained with the SITELLE Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometer on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, to search for kinematic signatures of late gas accretion to explain their large atomic gas reservoirs. The maps for UGC 7899, UGC 9037, and UGC 9334 are amenable to disk wide radial flow searches with the DiskFit algorithm, and those for UGC 7899 and UGC 9037 are also amenable to inner-disk kinematic analyses. We find no evidence for outer disk radial flows down to Vr ~ 20 km/s in UGC 9037 and UGC 9334, but hints of such flows in UGC 7899. Conversely, we find clear signatures of inner (r ~ 5 kpc) noncircularities in UGC 7899 and UGC 9037 that can be modelled as either bisymmetric (which could be produced by a bar) or radial flows. Comparing these models to the structure implied by photometric disk-bulge-bar decompositions, we favour inner radial flows in UGC 7899 and an inner bar in UGC 9037. With hints of outer disk radial flows and an outer disk warp, UGC 7899 is the best candidate for late accretion among the galaxies examined, but additional modelling is required to disentangle potential degeneracies between these signatures in H I and H-alpha velocity maps. We present the Virgo Environment Traced in CO (VERTICO) survey, a new effort to map $^{12}$CO($2-1$), $^{13}$CO($2-1$), and C$^{18}$O($2-1$) in 51 Virgo Cluster galaxies with the Atacama Compact Array, part of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The primary motivation of VERTICO is to understand the physical mechanisms that perturb molecular gas disks, and therefore star formation and galaxy evolution, in dense environments. This first paper contains an overview of VERTICO's design and sample selection, $^{12}$CO($2-1$) observations, and data reduction procedures. We characterize global $^{12}$CO($2-1$) fluxes and molecular gas masses for the 49 detected VERTICO galaxies, provide upper limits for the two non-detections, and produce resolved $^{12}$CO($2-1$) data products (median resolution $= 8^{\prime\prime} \approx 640~{\rm pc}$). Azimuthally averaged $^{12}$CO($2-1$) radial intensity profiles are presented along with derived molecular gas radii. We demonstrate the scientific power of VERTICO by comparing the molecular gas size--mass scaling relation for our galaxies with a control sample of field galaxies, highlighting the strong effect that radius definition has on this correlation. We discuss the drivers of the form and scatter in the size--mass relation and highlight areas for future work. VERTICO is an ideal resource for studying the fate of molecular gas in cluster galaxies and the physics of environment-driven processes that perturb the star formation cycle. The two sources AGC 226178 and NGVS 3543, an extremely faint, clumpy, blue stellar system and a low surface brightness dwarf spheroidal, are adjacent systems in the direction of the Virgo cluster. Both have been studied in detail previously, with it being suggested that they are unrelated normal dwarf galaxies or that NGVS 3543 recently lost its gas through ram pressure stripping, and that AGC 226178 formed from this stripped gas. However, with HST ACS imaging we demonstrate that the stellar population of NGVS 3543 is inconsistent with being at the distance of the Virgo cluster, and that it is likely a foreground object at approximately 10 Mpc. Whereas the stellar population of AGC 226178 is consistent with it being a very young (10-100 Myr) object in the Virgo cluster. Through a re-analysis of the original ALFALFA HI detection we show that AGC 226178 likely formed from gas stripped from the nearby dwarf galaxy VCC 2034, a hypothesis strengthened by the high metallicity measured with MUSE VLT observations. However, it is unclear whether ram pressure or a tidal interaction is responsible for stripping the gas. AGC 226178 is one of at least five similar objects now known towards Virgo. These objects are all young and unlikely to remain visible for over ~500 Myr, suggesting that they are continually produced in the cluster., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

We present new redshift measurements for 19 candidate, ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) from the Systematically Measuring Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (SMUDGes) survey after conducting a long-slit, spectroscopic follow-up campaign on 23 candidates at the Large Binocular Telescope. We combine these results with redshift measurements from other sources for 29 SMUDGes and 20 non-SMUDGes candidate UDGs. Together, this sample yields 44 spectroscopically-confirmed UDGs ($r_e\geq1.5$ kpc and $\mu_g(0)\geq24$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ within uncertainties) and spans cluster and field environments, with all but one projected on the Coma cluster and environs. We find no statistically significant differences in the structural parameters of cluster and non-cluster confirmed UDGs, although there are hints of differences among the axis ratio distributions. Similarly, we find no significant structural differences among those in locally dense or sparse environments. However, we observe a significant difference in color with respect to projected cluster-centric radius, confirming trends observed previously in statistical UDG samples. This trend strengthens further when considering whether UDGs reside in either cluster or locally dense environments, suggesting starkly different star formation histories for UDGs residing in high and low-density environments. Of the 16 large ($r_e \geq 3.5$ kpc) UDGs in our sample, only one is a field galaxy that falls near the early-type galaxy red sequence. No other field UDGs found in low density environments fall near the red sequence. This finding, in combination with our detection of GALEX NUV flux in nearly half of the UDGs in sparse environments, suggest that field UDGs are a population of slowly evolving galaxies., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to ApJ

We present 226 large ultra-diffuse galaxy (UDG) candidates ($r_e > 5.3$\arcsec, $\mu_{0,g} > 24$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$) in the SDSS Stripe 82 region recovered using our improved procedure developed in anticipation of processing the entire Legacy Surveys footprint. The advancements include less constrained structural parameter fitting, expanded wavelet filtering criteria, consideration of Galactic dust, estimates of parameter uncertainties and completeness based on simulated sources, and refinements of our automated candidate classification. We have a sensitivity $\sim$1 mag fainter in $\mu_{0,g}$ than the largest published catalog of this region. Using our completeness-corrected sample, we find that (1) there is no significant decline in the number of UDG candidates as a function of $\mu_{0,g}$ to the limit of our survey ($\sim$ 26.5 mag arcsec$^{-2}$); (2) bluer candidates have smaller S\'ersic $n$; (3) most blue ($g-r < 0.45$ mag) candidates have $\mu_{0,g} \lesssim 25$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and will fade to populate the UDG red sequence we observe to $\sim 26.5$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$; (4) any red UDGs that exist significantly below our $\mu_{0,g}$ sensitivity limit are not descended from blue UDGs in our sample; and (5) candidates with lower $\mu_{0,g}$ tend to smaller $n$. We present deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of five faint dwarf galaxies associated with the nearby spiral NGC 253 (D$\approx$3.5 Mpc). Three of these are newly discovered ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, while all five were found in the Panoramic Imaging Survey of Centaurus and Sculptor (PISCeS), a Magellan$+$Megacam survey to identify faint dwarfs and other substructures in resolved stellar light around massive galaxies outside of the Local Group. Our HST data reach $\gtrsim$3 magnitudes below the tip of the red giant branch for each dwarf, allowing us to derive their distances, structural parameters, and luminosities. All five systems contain predominantly old, metal-poor stellar populations (age$\sim$12 Gyr, [M/H]$\lesssim$$-$1.5) and have sizes ($r_{h}$$\sim$110-3000 pc) and luminosities ($M_V$$\sim$$-7$ to $-12$ mag) largely consistent with Local Group dwarfs. The three new NGC 253 satellites are among the faintest systems discovered beyond the Local Group. We also use archival HI data to place limits on the gas content of our discoveries. Deep imaging surveys such as our program around NGC 253 promise to elucidate the faint end of the satellite luminosity function and its scatter across a range of galaxy masses, morphologies, and environments in the decade to come., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; submitted to ApJL; comments welcome

We compare the star-forming properties of satellites around Milky Way (MW) analogs from the Stage~II release of the Satellites Around Galactic Analogs Survey (SAGA-II) to those from the APOSTLE and Auriga cosmological zoom-in simulation suites. We use archival GALEX UV imaging as a star-formation indicator for the SAGA-II sample and derive star-formation rates (SFRs) to compare with those from APOSTLE and Auriga. We compare our detection rates from the NUV and FUV bands to the SAGA-II H$\alpha$ detections and find that they are broadly consistent with over $85\%$ of observed satellites detected in all three tracers. We apply the same spatial selection criteria used around SAGA-II hosts to select satellites around the MW-like hosts in APOSTLE and Auriga. We find very good overall agreement in the derived SFRs for the star-forming satellites as well as the number of star-forming satellites per host in observed and simulated samples. However, the number and fraction of quenched satellites in the SAGA-II sample are significantly lower than those in APOSTLE and Auriga below a stellar mass of $M_*\sim10^{8}\,M_{\odot}$, even when the SAGA-II incompleteness and interloper corrections are included. This discrepancy is robust with respect to the resolution of the simulations and persists when alternative star-formation tracers are employed. We posit that this disagreement is not readily explained by vagaries in the observed or simulated samples considered here, suggesting a genuine discrepancy that may inform the physics of satellite populations around MW analogs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters after minor changes to text

We have followed up two ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), detected adjacent to stellar streams, with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging and HI mapping with the Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in order to investigate the possibility that they might have a tidal origin. With the HST F814W and F555W images we measure the globular cluster (GC) counts for NGC 2708-Dw1 and NGC 5631-Dw1 as $2^{+1}_{-1}$ and $5^{+1}_{-2}$, respectively. NGC 2708-Dw1 is undetected in HI down to a 3$\sigma$ limit of $\log (M_\mathrm{HI}/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 7.3$, and there is no apparent HI associated with the nearby stellar stream. There is a 2$\sigma$ HI feature coincident with NGC 5631-Dw1. However, this emission is blended with a large gaseous tail emanating from NGC 5631 and is not necessarily associated with the UDG. The presence of any GCs and the lack of clear HI connections between the UDGs and their parent galaxies strongly disfavor a tidal dwarf galaxy origin, but cannot entirely rule it out. The GC counts are consistent with those of normal dwarf galaxies, and the most probable formation mechanism is one where these UDGs were born as normal dwarfs and were later tidally stripped and heated. We also identify an over-luminous ($M_\mathrm{V} = -11.1$) GC candidate in NGC 2708-Dw1, which may be a nuclear star cluster transitioning to an ultra-compact dwarf as the surrounding dwarf galaxy gets stripped of stars., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Assessing the likelihood that the rotation curve of a galaxy matches predictions from galaxy formation simulations requires that the uncertainties in the circular speed as a function of radius derived from the observational data be statistically robust. Few uncertainties presented in the literature meet this requirement. In this paper we present a new standalone tool, makemap, that estimates the fitted velocity at each pixel from Gauss-Hermite fits to a 3D spectral data cube, together with its uncertainty obtained from a modified bootstrap procedure. We apply this new tool to neutral hydrogen spectra for 18 galaxies from the THINGS sample, and present new velocity maps with uncertainties. We propagate the estimated uncertainties in the velocity map into our previously-described model fitting tool DiskFit to derive new rotation curves. The uncertainties we obtain from these fits take into account not only the observational errors, but also uncertainties in the fitted systemic velocity, position of the rotation centre, inclination of the galaxy to the line of sight, and forced non-circular motion. They are therefore much better-defined than values that have previously been available. Our estimated uncertainties on the circular speeds differ from previous estimates by factors ranging up to of five, being smaller in some cases and larger in others. We conclude that kinematic models of well-resolved HI datasets vary widely in their precision and reliability, and therefore potentially in their value for comparisons with predictions from cosmological galaxy formation simulations., Comment: 31 pages, 22 figures, accepted to appear in MNRAS. We present a deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging study of two dwarf galaxies in the halos of Local Volume Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) analogs. These dwarfs were discovered as part of our Subaru+Hyper Suprime-Cam MADCASH survey: MADCASH-1, which is a satellite of NGC 2403 (D~3.2 Mpc), and MADCASH-2, a previously unknown dwarf galaxy near NGC 4214 (D~3.0 Mpc). Our HST data reach >3.5 mag below the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) of each dwarf, allowing us to derive their structural parameters and assess their stellar populations. We measure TRGB distances ($D=3.41^{+0.24}_{-0.23}$ Mpc for MADCASH-1, and $D=3.00^{+0.13}_{-0.15}$ Mpc for MADCASH-2), and confirm their associations with their host galaxies. MADCASH-1 is a predominantly old, metal-poor stellar system (age ~13.5 Gyr, [M/H] ~ -2.0), similar to many Local Group dwarfs. Modelling of MADCASH-2's CMD suggests that it contains mostly ancient, metal-poor stars (age ~13.5 Gyr, [M/H] ~ -2.0), but that ~10% of its stellar mass was formed 1.1--1.5 Gyr ago, and ~1% was formed 400--500 Myr ago. Given its recent star formation, we search MADCASH-2 for neutral hydrogen using the Green Bank Telescope, but find no emission and estimate an upper limit on the HI mass of $<4.8\times10^4 M_{\odot}$. These are the faintest dwarf satellites known around host galaxies of LMC mass outside the Local Group ($M_{V,\text{MADCASH-1}}=-7.81\pm0.18$, $M_{V,\text{MADCASH-2}}=-9.15\pm0.12$), and one of them shows signs of recent environmental quenching by its host. Once the MADCASH survey for faint dwarf satellites is complete, our census will enable us to test CDM predictions for hierarchical structure formation, and discover the physical mechanisms by which low-mass hosts influence the evolution of their satellites., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables; minor edits to match accepted version published in ApJ

We present neutral hydrogen (HI) observations using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) of 70 optically-detected UDG candidates in the Coma region from the Systematically Measuring Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies survey (SMUDGes). We detect HI in 18 targets, confirming 9 to be gas-rich UDGs and the remainder to be foreground dwarfs. None of our HI-detected UDGs are Coma Cluster members and all but one are in low-density environments. The HI-detected UDGs are bluer and have more irregular morphologies than the redder, smoother candidates not detected in HI, with the combination of optical color and morphology being a better predictor of gas richness than either parameter alone. There is little visual difference between the gas-rich UDGs and the foreground dwarfs in the SMUDGes imaging, and distances are needed to distinguish between them. We find that the gas richnesses of our HI-confirmed UDGs and those from other samples scale with their effective radii in two stellar mass bins, possibly providing clues to their formation. We attempt to place our UDGs on the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) using optical ellipticities and turbulence-corrected HI linewidths to estimate rotation velocities, but the potential systematics associated with fitting smooth $\mathrm{S\acute{e}rsic}$ profiles to clumpy, low-inclination low surface brightness disks precludes a meaningful analysis of potential BTFR offsets. These observations are a pilot for a large campaign now underway at the GBT to use the HI properties of gas-rich UDGs to quantitatively constrain how these galaxies form and evolve., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. We present a wide-field optical imaging search for electromagnetic counterparts to the likely neutron star - black hole (NS-BH) merger GW190814/S190814bv. This compact binary merger was detected through gravitational waves by the LIGO/Virgo interferometers, with masses suggestive of a NS-BH merger. We imaged the LIGO/Virgo localization region using the MegaCam instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We describe our hybrid observing strategy of both tiling and galaxy-targeted observations, as well as our image differencing and transient detection pipeline. Our observing campaign produced some of the deepest multi-band images of the region between 1.7 and 8.7 days post-merger, reaching a 5sigma depth of g > 22.8 (AB mag) at 1.7 days and i > 23.1 and i > 23.9 at 3.7 and 8.7 days, respectively. These observations cover a mean total integrated probability of 67.0% of the localization region. We find no compelling candidate transient counterparts to this merger in our images, which suggests that either the lighter object was tidally disrupted inside of the BH's innermost stable circular orbit, the transient lies outside of the observed sky footprint, or the lighter object is a low-mass BH. We use 5sigma source detection upper limits from our images in the NS-BH interpretation of this merger to constrain the mass of the kilonova ejecta to be Mej < 0.015Msun for a 'blue' (kappa = 0.5 cm^2 g^-1) kilonova, and Mej < 0.04Msun for a 'red' (kappa = 5-10 cm^2 g^-1) kilonova. The search for emission from weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter annihilation and decay has become a multi-pronged area of research not only targeting a diverse selection of astrophysical objects, but also taking advantage of the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The decay of WIMP particles into standard model particles has been suggested as a possible channel for synchrotron emission to be detected at low radio frequencies. Here, we present the stacking analysis of a sample of 33 dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies with low-frequency (72 - 231 MHz) radio images from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. We produce radial surface brightness profiles of images centred upon each dSph galaxy with background radio sources masked. We remove ten fields from the stacking due to contamination from either poorly subtracted, bright radio sources or strong background gradients across the field. The remaining 23 dSph galaxies are stacked in an attempt to obtain a statistical detection of any WIMP-induced synchrotron emission in these systems. We find that the stacked radial brightness profile does not exhibit a statistically significant detection above the 95% confidence level of $\sim$1.5 mJy beam$^{-1}$. We present atomic hydrogen (HI) observations using the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope along the lines-of-sight to 27 low surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxy candidates discovered in optical searches around M101. We detect HI reservoirs in 5 targets and place stringent upper limits on the remaining 22, implying that they are gas poor. The distances to our HI detections range from 7 Mpc --150 Mpc, demonstrating the utility of wide-bandpass HI observations as a follow-up tool. The systemic velocities of 3 detections are consistent with that of the NGC~5485 group behind M101, and we suggest that our 15 non-detections with lower distance limits from the optical are associated with and have been stripped by that group. We find that the gas richnesses of confirmed M101 satellites are broadly consistent with those of the Milky Way satellites, as well as with those of satellites around other hosts of comparable mass, when survey completeness is taken into account. This suggests that satellite quenching and gas stripping proceeds similarly around halos of similar mass, in line with theoretical expectations., Comment: 6 Figures, 3 Tables, Accepted for publication in AJ

This white paper submitted for the 2020 Canadian Long-Range Planning process (LRP2020) presents the prospects for Canada and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) from 2020-2030, focussing on the first phase of the project (SKA1) scheduled to begin construction early in the next decade. SKA1 will make transformational advances in our understanding of the Universe across a wide range of fields, and Canadians are poised to play leadership roles in several. Canadian key SKA technologies will ensure a good return on capital investment in addition to strong scientific returns, positioning Canadian astronomy for future opportunities well beyond 2030.
