The goal of Diabetes Today, a program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is to develop coalitions and train coalition members in assessment, planning, and evaluation to address diabetes in their communities. CDC established the Pacific Diabetes Today Resource Center (PDTRC) in 1998 to tailor the program for Pacific Islander communities in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Palau. PDTRC's work is guided by the principles of community building and the goal of empowering coalitions to take action around diabetes. Culturally appropriate strategies are used to gain access to the community, transfer knowledge and skills, build coalitions, and provide technical assistance. Evidence of empowerment is seen in increased individual competence, enhanced community capacity, reduced barriers, and improved supports to address diabetes. To maintain the gains of community building in the Pacific, three factors appear critical: an engaged leader, a host agency for the coalition, and continuing access to technical assistance and funds. Dietary- and lifestyle-related diseases are problems of epidemic proportion in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Public health resources to help prevent nutrition-related problems are limited. There is also concern about biodiversity, neglect of traditional staple foods, and threatened loss of traditional knowledge. A "Go Local" campaign was initiated to increase production and consumption of locally grown foods, for their Culture, Health, Environment, Economics, and Food security ("CHEEF") benefits. To provide updates and discuss local island food topics, the Island Food Community of Pohnpei launched an interagency email network in 2003. Interested members' email addresses were recorded in distribution lists, weekly/bi-weekly emails were sent and from these messages, a database was organized to record email topic details. An analysis of all emails up to July 2009 showed that membership had expanded to over 600 listed people from all FSM states, other Pacific Island countries and beyond. Information was shared on topics ranging from scientific findings of carotenoid content in local island food cultivars, to discussions on how daily habits related to island food use can be improved. Over 200 men and women, aged 22 to 80 years, contributed items, some indicating that they had shared emails to a further network at their workplace or community. In conclusion, this email network is a simple, cost-effective method to share information, create awareness, and mobilize island food promotion efforts with potential for providing health, biodiversity and other benefits of island foods to populations in the FSM and other countries.

Achromatopsia is an autosomal recessive disorder featuring total colour blindness, photophobia, reduced visual acuity and nystagmus. While mutations in the CNGA3 gene on chromosome 2q11 are responsible for achromatopsia in a subset of patients, previous linkage studies have localized another achromatopsia locus, ACHM3, on chromosome 8q21. Using achromatopsia families in which CNGA3 mutations have been excluded, we refined the ACHM3 locus to a 3.7 cM region enclosed by markers D8S1838 and D8S273. Two yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) contigs covering nearly the entire ACHM3 interval were constructed. Database searches with YAC content sequences identified two overlapping high throughput genomic sequencing phase (HTGS) entries which contained sequences homologous to the murine cng6 gene encoding the putative beta-subunit of the cone photoreceptor cGMP-gated channel. Using RT-PCR and RACE, we identified and cloned the human cDNA homologue, designated CNGB3, which encodes an 809 amino acid polypeptide. Northern blot analysis revealed a major transcript of approximately 4.4 kb specifically expressed in the retina. The human CNGB3 gene consists of 18 exons distributed over approximately 200 kb of genomic sequence. Analysis of the CNGB3 gene in achromats revealed six different mutations including a missense mutation (S435F), two stop codon mutations (R203X and E336X), a 1 bp and an 8 bp deletion (1148delC and 819-826del) and a putative splice site mutation of intron 13. The 1148delC mutation was identified recurrently in several families, and in total was present on 11 of 22 disease chromosomes segregating in our families.
