Urban environments are vulnerable to the introduction of non-native species and sometimes contribute to their invasion success. Knowing how urban landscape features affect the population dynamics of exotic species is therefore essential to understand and manage these species. The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is a highly polyphagous fruit fly that has become a very problematic invasive species over the last decade. Because of its important damage on fruit production, D. suzukii populations have mainly been studied in agricultural areas, while their dynamics in urban landscape remain poorly explored. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of urban environment in the invasion success of D. suzukii by identifying local and landscape factors driving the abundance of the fly along seasons and urbanization gradients. To achieve this, 526 insect traps were randomly set in four different habitats (urban forest, park, riverside and town centre) along an urbanization gradient in the city of Amiens (France), between September 2018 and August 2019. The influence of landscape and local environmental variables on Drosophilidae species diversity and composition was examined using GLM and multivariate analyses. We found that Drosophilidae species richness and abundance were negatively impacted by urbanization. The Drosophilidae community was dominated by D. subobscura and D. suzukii, but their relative abundance varied with seasons. Drosophila suzukii used urban forest during winter and also during heat waves in summer. The fly was still active in this habitat in winter when the ground was covered with snow. The cover of brambles, shrubs, soil litter and dead wood debris were identified as valuable ecological indicators of the presence of D. suzukii. We highlight the role of the different components of urban environment in the ecology of D. suzukii, particularly with regard to its winter survival. These results could serve for designing management strategies in urban habitats in order to reduce the invasion success of D. suzukii. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) economic cooperation program is an effective and fruitful regional cooperation initiative for socioeconomic development in Asia; however, the vegetation change trends and directions in the GMS caused by rapid development remain unknown. In particular, there is a current lack of comparative studies on vegetation changes in various countries in the GMS. Based on the MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series data, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation coverage and their trends in the GMS from 2000 to 2022 using the Theil–Sen slope estimation, the Mann–Kendall mutation test, and the gravity center migration model. The key findings were as follows: (1) the NDVI in the GMS showed an overall upward fluctuating trend over the past 23 years, with an annual growth rate of 0.11%. The NDVI changes varied slightly between seasons, with the greatest increases recorded in summer and winter. (2) The spatial distribution of NDVI in the GMS varied greatly, with higher NDVI values in the north–central region and lower NDVI values in the south. (3) A total of 66.03% of the GMS area showed increments in vegetation during the studied period, mainly in south–central Myanmar, northeastern Thailand, Vietnam, and China. (4) From 2000 to 2022, the gravity center of vegetation greenness shifted northward in the GMS, especially from 2000 to 2005, indicating that the growth rates of vegetation in the north–central part of the GMS were higher than those in the south. Furthermore, the vegetation coverage in all countries, except Cambodia, increased, with the most pronounced growth recorded in China. Intergenerational health mobility serves as a crucial indicator that reflects both social class mobility and health inequality. In this study, we constructed a comprehensive index to evaluate the health of residents in terms of physical, psychological and social adaptation dimensions using data from the China Family Panel Studies from 2010 to 2018. It then measured intergenerational health mobility using the intergenerational rank correlation coefficient method. Furthermore, the dynamic evolutionary trend, spatial differences and their sources, and the convergence characteristics of intergenerational health mobility were revealed by nonparametric kernel density estimation, the Dagum Gini coefficient, and the σ(β) convergence model, respectively. The formation mechanisms were explored using the quadratic assignment procedure. The results showed a general improvement but unbalanced trend of intergenerational health mobility in China, and hypervariable density was identified as the primary factor contributing to this difference. The σ convergence characteristics and β convergence mechanism were verified in China and its three regions. Environmental quality, industrial structure, and accessibility of medical and health resources had significant and decreasing effects on the spatial differences in intergenerational health mobility across China, with varying impacts observed among the three regions. This study not only provides empirical insights into understanding the dynamics laws of intergenerational health mobility and promoting regional coordinated development in China but also offers valuable guidance for formulating healthcare policies in developing countries and for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Introduction: Grain production at the regional level is related to the strategic development orientation of the country as a whole, and maintaining the stability of grain production is of great importance in ensuring the sustainable development of the food system. Studying the potential imbalance differences resulting from the spatial and temporal development of grain production and its driving factors will help to reduce the contradiction between the rapid development of the urban economy and the inappropriate use of arable land resources, thus coordinating regional agricultural development and further clarifying the direction and focus of future food security construction work. Methods: This study focuses on the potential imbalance differences based on spatial and temporal development of grain production in Jiangsu Province during the period 1990-2020, and explores the spatial and temporal patterns and driving mechanisms of grain production spatial autocorrelation model and spatial error model are applied to analysis the spatial and temporal characteristics of grain production and security in Jiangsu Province and their influencing factors. Results: The results are as follows: (1) The total amount of food in Jiangsu Province increased by 17.36% during the 30-year period, but the growth rate was lower than the national average. (2) Regional differences are significant, with a significant decline in grain production in southern Jiangsu and growth in northern and central Jiangsu. (3) The center of gravity for grain production has shifted to northern Jiangsu. (4) Grain production is significantly correlated with socio-economic factors such as per capita ownership, sown area, irrigated area, and cultivated area. Discussion: To ensure the sustainability of food production in the future, attention should be paid to the risk of imbalance in regional food production, coordination of socio-economic factors, promotion of efficient agricultural production, improvement of the relevant policy system and optimization of the food production system. A crucial strategic choice for China’s sustainable growth in the new era is the carbon peak & carbon neutral (30–60) aim, which has set new and higher requirements for the green and sustainable development of cities in the new era, and the carbon peak & carbon neutral level is gradually becoming one of the important indicators of the green and sustainable development of cities. Based on disentangling the connotation of urban green development under the vision of carbon neutrality, this study constructed a framework system for assessing urban green development in the new era, measured and portrayed the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of green development efficiency (C-GDE) under the carbon neutrality constraint in 284 prefecture-level and above cities in China using the SBM-Undesirable model, and further explored the effect of multi-subject factors on urban C-GDE using the panel Tobit model. The main findings are as follows. (1) The average allocation level of C-GDE in Chinese cities has remained at a low level from 2009 to 2019, with an overall “V”-shaped trend of “down → up”, increasing from 0.4031 to 0.5206, an overall increase of 29.15 %. (2) The overall C-GDE of Chinese cities showed the decreasing characteristics of “western cities > eastern cities > central cities”, “super cities > small cities > medium cities > large cities > mega cities > mega cities”, “non class cluster cities > class II cities > class III cities > class I cities”, and “agriculture-led cities > industry-led cities > balanced development cities > business and tourism service cities”. (3) The spatio-temporal pattern of urban C-GDE was influenced by multiple factors such as individual-level factors, enterprise-level factors, government-level factors, and other basic-level characteristic factors. Each factor, through its own evolution or coupling with other factors, continuously shaped the internal development of the urban system and promotes the greening process and urban C-GDE. Finally, targeted recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.

Abstract Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is an economically important disease affecting cattle and buffaloes and the livelihoods of small-holder farmers that depend upon them. The disease is caused by Gram-negative bacterium, Pasteurella multocida, and is considered to be endemic in many states of India with more than 25,000 outbreaks in the past three decades. Currently, there is no national policy for control of HS in India. In this study, we analysed thirty year (1987–2016) monthly data on HS outbreaks using different statistical and mathematical methods to identify spatial variability and temporal patterns (seasonality, periodicity). There was zonal variation in the trend and seasonality of HS outbreaks. Overall, South zone reported maximum proportion of the outbreaks (70.2%), followed by East zone (7.2%), Central zone (6.4%), North zone (5.6%), West zone (5.5%) and North-East zone (4.9%). Annual state level analysis indicated that the reporting of HS outbreaks started at different years independently and there was no apparent transmission between the states. The results of the current study are useful for the policy makers to design national control programme on HS in India and implement state specific strategies. Further, our study and strategies could aid in implementation of similar approaches in HS endemic tropical countries around the world.

The Hetao Irrigation District in Inner Mongolia, a vital grain-producing region in northern China, faces growing environmental challenges. Studying net primary productivity (NPP) is essential for understanding spatiotemporal vegetation shifts and guiding locally adapted restoration and management efforts. Utilizing MOD17A3/NPP data, this study applies the Theil–Sen median trend, Mann–Kendall significance, and the Hurst index to scrutinize the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of NPP from 2001 to 2021 and forecast future changes in the area. The findings reveal cyclic temporal trends, forming a "∧" shape with initial increases followed by decreases, notably during the July to August period each year. The multi-year average NPP exhibits a slight upward fluctuation trend, averaging 172.40 gCm−2a−1. Peaks occur approximately every three years, reaching the highest average in 2012 at 218.96 gCm−2a−1. Spatially, NPP distribution stays consistent over the years, influenced by various land cover types, especially cropland, shaping the spatial patterns. Monthly and yearly NPP trends over the 21 years indicate a significant decrease in May and June, with other months mostly showing a non-significant increase. The Hurst index for monthly and yearly NPP changes over 21 years shows relatively high weak anti-persistence. In summary, over the past 21 years, the NPP trend in the study area has not significantly improved and is expected to decline in the future. This study offers data support and a scientific foundation for refining the carbon cycle model, quantifying vegetation carbon sequestration capacity, addressing climate change policies, and striving for carbon peak and neutrality in the Hetao Irrigation District. For the preservation of ecosystems, including the enhancement of ecological strategies, examining the temporal and geographical variance in ecosystem services (ESs) and land use/land cover change (LUCC) is crucial. Gannan is situated on the upper Yellow River, which is a notable water conservation region with excellent ecological quality, but in the background of the local traditional production mode and rapid economic development, natural disasters, grassland degradation, and other ecological problems occur frequently. The integrated valuing of ecosystem services and tradeoffs (InVEST) model and the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model are combined in this work to assess the spatiotemporal variance in ESs in Gannan. We set up three scenarios in modeling future land use—ecological protection (EP), natural development (ND), and economic development (ED) in 2050—and analyzed and evaluated the drivers of the variation in ESs. In order to reveal the LUCC in Gannan between 1990 and 2020, we predicted the LUCC and ESs spatial distribution characteristics in 2050, explored the correlation between its driving factors, and comprehensively analyzed and propose optimization measures and protection strategies. Through several simulation experiments, the findings indicate the following: (1) the largest percentage of land expansion for construction in Gannan between 1990 and 2020 is 74.53%, and the most noticeable percentage of shrinkage in the sand area is 20.67%; (2) from 1990 to 2020, Gannan's water yield, carbon storage, soil retention, and habitat quality all changed, by 60 × 108 m3, 0.04 × 108 t, −10.66 × 108 t, and −0.02, respectively; (3) ESs are influenced by a variety of natural and societal variables: the southern and southwestern regions of Gannan are home to the majority of ESs hot spot areas, while the northern region is home to the majority of cold spot areas. This study contributes to the analysis of the developmental traits of Gannan ecosystems and can serve as a model for the preservation of terrestrial ecosystems with comparable environmental traits. As an exquisite asset of Chinese traditional culture, traditional opera occupies a place of high esteem within the world's cultural and artistic treasury. The impact of emerging cultures has threatened the future of traditional opera culture, necessitating a thorough examination of the historical context of the Grand Canal and traditional opera. There is insufficient research on the spatial evolution of the traditional opera culture along the Grand Canal; thus, this study takes ancient opera stages, a representative cultural relic of traditional opera, as an entry point and employs methods such as kernel density analysis and standard deviation ellipse analysis to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of the traditional opera culture along the Grand Canal. The results showed that: (i) Nationwide, opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal exhibit a significant clustering characteristic. (ii) The changes in the number and locations of opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal are closely related to the rise and fall of the Canal. The opera stages emerged along the Canal, gradually prospered with the development of the Canal, and finally clustered in a band-like cluster along the Grand Canal. (iii) From the Ming Dynasty to the founding of the People's Republic of China, the opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal spread in the "southeast–northwest" direction, which was consistent with the main direction of the Grand Canal, indicating its driving influence. (iv) On the centennial scale, from the 14th century to the 20th century, the evolution characteristics of the distribution centroid of opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal were closely related to the key time nodes of Grand Canal construction and basin expansion. This study reveals the relationship between the Grand Canal and the spatial pattern evolution of traditional opera culture, aiming to promote the construction of the Grand Canal cultural belt. The development of non-conventional energy sources is not only an important guarantee for national energy security but also a key support for the realization of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. However, there is limited knowledge of the spatial and temporal patterns and changing characteristics of green energy development in China. Here, based on the energy production and consumption data of the last decade, we combined the gravity center model and statistical model to assess the spatial and temporal patterns of non-conventional energy in 31 provinces of China. The research results show: (1) under the impetus of the development of green low-carbon and ecological civilization strategy, the rate of increase in the production of non-conventional energy in China and the proportion of it increase year by year, and the energy structure obviously presents the characteristics of being low-carbon and cleaner. (2) For the spatial patterns of non-conventional energy development, due to the development of wind power and photovoltaic constraints by natural resource conditions and technology, their development trend is best in northeast, north, and northwest China. (3) The generation of PV and wind power is dominated by northwest China and north China, and the generation of nuclear power is dominated by southeast China, whereas the consumption is dominated by east China and central China; there is an obvious spatial imbalance between non-conventional energy production and consumption. (4) The proportion of photovoltaics in non-conventional energy production has increased significantly over the 2010–2020 period, which is the main driver of the overall shift in the gravity center of non-conventional energy production towards the northwest region of China. (5) In recent years, the gradual transfer of industries from the east to the central and western regions of China and the improvement in the economic level of the western regions have led to an increase in energy production and consumption, promoting a shift in the gravity center of energy production and consumption to the west. Overall, the structural transformation of China's energy production and consumption (from a high-carbon black structure to a low-carbon and carbon-free green structure) is progressing, and some provinces have achieved significant results, presenting a non-conventional energy industry in accordance with local conditions and the development trend of the non-conventional energy industry. There is always a contradiction between the limited health resources and the unlimited demand of the population for health services, and only by improving the productivity of health resources can the health level of the population be improved as much as possible. Using prefecture-level administrative regions as spatial units, the paper analyzes the spatial pattern and changes of health productivity of health resources in China from 2000 to 2010, and uses a spatial panel Tobit model to examine the effects of factors such as technical level of health institutions, health service accessibility, public health policies and ecological environment quality on health productivity of health resources. The results show that with the Hu Huanyong line as the dividing line, the spatial heterogeneity of “high in the southeast and low in the northwest” in the health productivity of China's health resources is clear; as the regional differences narrow, the spatial correlation increases, and the spatial pattern of “overall dispersion and partial agglomeration” becomes more obvious. The fitting results of the spatial Durbin model reveal the direction and degree of influence of local and adjacent factors on the production efficiency of health resources. The positive influence of technical level of local health institutions and the accessibility of health services, the literacy level and the ability to pay for health services of residents in adjacent areas, the degree of urbanization of regional health resource allocation, climate suitability and the quality of the atmospheric environment are significant. And the negative influence of local residents' literacy and ability to pay for health services, the technical level of health institutions in adjacent areas and the degree of medicalization of health resource allocation are also significant. The influence of the degree of medicalization of local health resource allocation and the accessibility of health services in adjacent areas are significantly spatial-heterogeneous.

Carbon emissions from forest fires release large amounts of carbon and have important implications for the global and regional carbon cycle and atmospheric carbon concentrations. Considering the significant spatial and temporal variations in different forest fires, this study explores the relationship between different forests and carbon emissions from forest fires. This study developed a high-resolution (0.05° × 0.05°) daily global inventory of carbon emissions from biomass burning during 2016–2022. The inventory estimates of carbon emissions from biomass burning are based on the newly released FY-3 data product, satellite and observational data of biomass density, and spatial and temporal variable combustion factors. Forest fire carbon emissions were assessed using active fire data from FY-3 series satellites from 2016 to 2022, and it was linearly compared with GFED, FEER, and GFAS data on time and spatial scales with R2 of 0.7, 0.73, and 0.69, respectively. The results show spatial patterns of forest cover and carbon emissions, with South America, Africa, South-East Asia, and northern Asia as high-emission zones. The analysis shows an overall upward trend in global forest fire carbon emissions over the study period. Different types of forests exhibited specific emission patterns and temporal variations. For example, most needleleaf forest fires occur in areas with low tree cover, while broadleaf forest fires tend to occur in areas with high tree cover. The study showed that there was a relationship between inter-annual trends in forest fire carbon emissions and land cover, with biomass burning occurring mainly in the range of 60–70% tree cover. However, there were also differences between evergreen broadleaf forest, evergreen needleleaf forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, deciduous needleleaf forest, and mixed forest indicating the importance of considering differences in forest types when estimating emissions. This study identifies the main sources of carbon emissions from forest fires globally, which will help policymakers to take more targeted measures to reduce carbon emissions and provide a reliable basis for appropriate measures and directions in future carbon mitigation actions. Based on the data of private listed enterprises in Yangtze River Delta, we measure the development index of private listed enterprises based on the entropy method, analyze their spatial and temporal development characteristics by combining the exploratory spatial data analysis method, and quantitatively estimate the spatial variation of driving factors by using the econometric model. The results show that: ① During 2003-2018,the top 10 industries occupied by private listed enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta had been mainly manufacturings and services, no matter measured by numbers of enterprises or by revenue, the share of these two industries exceeded 50 percent; ② The private listed enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta show a "northwest-southeast" development pattern, characterized by "diffusion followed by agglomeration and Z-shaped shift", with significant spatial heterogeneity and "polycentric semi The spatial heterogeneity of its spreading area is significant and "polycentric and semi-circular"; ③ The spatial differentiation of driving factors is not significant, and its spatial differentiation changes along a unidirectional gradient, the driving effect is maintained in the positive driving environment of technological innovation, market scale, from positive driving to negative driving traffic accessibility, urban policy environment, from negative driving to positive driving. The driving effects are maintained in the positive direction by technological innovation environment and market scale, in the negative direction by traffic accessibility and urban policy environment, and in the negative direction by production cost and openness to the outside world. Climatic factors have a strong influence on the occurrence of forest diseases and pests, but few studies have systematically analyzed the influence of spring climatic factors on the occurrence of forest diseases and pests in China. We collected inventory data of forest resources, forest diseases, and pest occurrences and then analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of China's forest diseases and pests from 1992–2019. Next, we took spring temperature accumulations ≥ 10 °C, spring average precipitation, and spring average radiation as the spring climatic factors and analyzed their influence on China's forest diseases and pests with partial correlation and piecewise trend methods. The results showed that the incidence rate of forest diseases and pests in China had a nonlinear decreasing trend that occurred simultaneously with the growth of forested areas and the increase in forest pest and disease areas. Ultimately, the increase in forest pest and disease areas stabilized at low levels of 1% and 4%, respectively. This change generated a spatial shift from an east–west to a north–south pattern in China. Additionally, the average turning points of forest disease and pest incidence trends in China occurred in 2000 and 2005, where 56.7% and 63.3% of provinces, respectively, experienced significant shifts in forest disease and pest incidence. Finally, spring meteorological elements had a significant role in driving the mechanisms of forest disease and pest incidence in China. Among these, spring temperature accumulation was a major contributor in disease and pest variability in China. However, spring radiation and spring precipitation were important local drivers in Southwest China, though these two factors had two opposing shifts in forest diseases and pests reflected over time. This study systematically analyzed the impact of climate change on the development of forest diseases and pests in China, helping clarify the future control of forest diseases and pests in China. Ecological and environmental degradation are among the major challenges facing humanity today. The analysis of ecosystem service value assessments can therefore serve as a means to guide ecosystem restoration, as well as provide indications for sustainable land use and land management decisions. The present study examines changes in land use and the associated ecosystem service values in the Yan River Basin in China for the period of 1990–2020. Based on high-resolution Landsat satellite data, we obtained detailed land type distribution data for the basin, allowing the analysis of the internal structure and the degree of influence of the land use by using information entropy and elasticity coefficient. We also explored the spatiotemporal differentiation of ESVs by applying the method of equivalent factors and hotspot analysis. Finally, we identified possible drivers for development patterns observed in the watershed using geodetector models. During the study period, the area of arable land dropped continuously, while the scope of forest land, grassland, and construction land increased. The land type layout developed in the direction of reduced uniformity. ESVs measured in monetary terms first rose and later fell, but nevertheless increased by 1.152 billion yuan overall. The decrease was mainly due to the accelerated urbanization construction in the later stage. Spatially, ESV distribution coincided with the land-use pattern, showing a growing pattern from north to south. The changes were due not to the role of a single factor but the joint interactions between multiple factors such as human activities, natural factors, and landscape patterns. The results can provide a basis for constructive suggestions to connect and promote the basin's natural and socio-economic surroundings, and also reflect the effectiveness of the policy of systematically stopping cultivation and planting trees and grass on stunted cultivated land. The Hetao Irrigation District in Inner Mongolia, a vital grain-producing region in northern China, faces growing environmental challenges. Studying net primary productivity (NPP) is essential for understanding spatiotemporal vegetation shifts and guiding locally adapted restoration and management efforts. Utilizing MOD17A3/NPP data, this study applies the Theil–Sen median trend, Mann–Kendall significance, and the Hurst index to scrutinize the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of NPP from 2001 to 2021 and forecast future changes in the area. The findings reveal cyclic temporal trends, forming a “∧” shape with initial increases followed by decreases, notably during the July to August period each year. The multi-year average NPP exhibits a slight upward fluctuation trend, averaging 172.40 gCm−2a−1. Peaks occur approximately every three years, reaching the highest average in 2012 at 218.96 gCm−2a−1. Spatially, NPP distribution stays consistent over the years, influenced by various land cover types, especially cropland, shaping the spatial patterns. Monthly and yearly NPP trends over the 21 years indicate a significant decrease in May and June, with other months mostly showing a non-significant increase. The Hurst index for monthly and yearly NPP changes over 21 years shows relatively high weak anti-persistence. In summary, over the past 21 years, the NPP trend in the study area has not significantly improved and is expected to decline in the future. This study offers data support and a scientific foundation for refining the carbon cycle model, quantifying vegetation carbon sequestration capacity, addressing climate change policies, and striving for carbon peak and neutrality in the Hetao Irrigation District.

Water resources are the material basis for human social development. They play an essential role in human production and life. They are vital for the healthy growth of ecosystem services. The quantitative assessment of the water conservation (WC) function is of great significance to the management of regional ecosystems and the construction of ecological civilization. Gannan is an influential water supply area in the upper Yellow River Basin. Understanding the current status and future changes of its WC function can provide scientific support for the stable use and sustainable development of water resources in the upper Yellow River Basin; its ecological status is highly important. The present study quantitatively assesses the WC function of Gannan based on the InVEST model. It aims to explore the regional ecological compensation mechanism, enhance regional ecological regulation capacity and increase water supply by studying the trend in changes in the WC function and the influence mechanism. The results show that: (1) The overall trend in WC capacity in Gannan increased during the period 2000–2020. (2) The spatial distribution of WC in Gannan varies from year to year, but there is some similarity, showing a high degree in the southwest and a low degree in the northeast. (3) Climatic factors are the dominant factors underlying the spatial and temporal distribution of WC in Gannan. (4) The important areas of WC are located in the southwest and southeast of Gannan. Ordos City is an important energy supply city for Chinese provinces and cities, providing a secure energy supply for China while also generating corresponding environmental pollution. Examining the spatiotemporal patterns of net primary productivity (NPP) in Ordos City and its driving factors is relevant to the realization of the carbon emission policy in Inner Mongolia. This study was undertaken to analyze NPP and its driving factors in Ordos City from 2000 to 2019 using NPP data, CO2 spatial grid data, meteorological data and statistical yearbook data accordingly. The NPP in Ordos City increased significantly from 2000 to 2019, mainly showing low values of NPP in the northwest and high values in the southeast. The usable grassland area and annual mean precipitation had a significant positive correlation with NPP, whereas the other factors had a more significant negative correlation. The usable grassland area had the largest influence on NPP, and fixed asset investment had the smallest influence on NPP. The total NPP–anthropogenic factor regression model and the mean NPP–natural factor regression model constructed allow for the prediction of NPP. Anthropogenic carbon emissions, population growth and usable grassland area were the main causes of NPP changes. Planting and protecting green plants and scientific and effective energy extraction plans are measures that enhance the degree of carbon sequestration in Ordos City. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spatial and temporal evolution process of the water and soil resource carrying capacity in artificial oases in the arid zone of China was accurately revealed. This study constructs a water and soil resource analysis system based on system dynamics. It integrates cloud theory and hierarchical analysis to analyze the evolutional trend of the water and soil resource carrying capacity in irrigation areas. The spatial analysis technique was used to obtain a raster map of the spatial and temporal characteristics of the influencing factors, and analyze the evolutionary characteristics of the water and soil resources carrying capacity by integrating multi-source data. The results showed that: (1) the evaluation clouds of water and soil resources carrying capacity in 2002, 2010, and 2018 were (0.5034, 0.0236, 0.0071), (0.5586, 00218, 0.0062), and (0.5989, 0.0249, 0.0061), respectively. This showed that the carrying capacity of water and soil resources was transitioning from ‘critical bearing’ to ‘good bearing’, but the evolution rate was gradually decreasing; (2) from 2002 to 2018, the size of the ‘good bearing’ area increased by 8.38%, while the size of the ‘severe bearing’ area decreased by 6.4%; (3) the degree of dramatic evolution of the carrying capacity of water and soil resources is: continuous change > pre-change > post-change > continuous stable > repeated change; (4) the serious carrying capacity area shows a spatial pattern of decreasing in an arc from the town to the surrounding areas. The results showed that water and soil resource-carrying capacity of the irrigation area shows a healthy and continuous spatial and temporal evolution trend. HIGHLIGHTS Coupling SD, multilevel fuzzy theory and cloud model were used to assess the carrying capacity of water and soil resources.; Based on Arc GIS and ENVI we showed the spatial distribution characteristics of regional environmental conditions.; The carrying capacity of water and soil resources shows a healthy evolution trend, and the evolution rate slows down gradually.;

The thermal state of the northern rivers of Russia has undergone significant changes in the last 30–40 years due to climate warming, changes in water runoff. The purpose of this investigation is to study and explain only changes in heat flux, their long-term and spatial patterns in the northeast Asian part of Russia. Here, the heat flux of rivers is formed under the influence of climatic conditions, the altitude and latitude location of rivers, continuous permafrost, aufeis, glacial runoff and groundwater recharge, different water regime of rivers. An important feature of the research is the use of a large number of hydrological stations—145 and 231 gauging stations with data on water discharge and stream temperature, mainly from 1955 to 2012/2018. The abundance of data enabled to create unique maps of heat-flux and its deviations from the values of the base period. Empirical relationships between heat flux, on the one hand, and water runoff and water temperature, on the other, made it possible to improve the initial data, showed the leading role of water runoff in long-term fluctuations in heat-flux. However, climatic warming enhances the role of the temperature factor and transforms the relationship between water runoff and heat-flux, "shifting" them upwards. So far, these violations have not covered most of the gauging stations. The long-term "behavior" of heat flux is not unambiguous. Nevertheless, the period since the late 1980s is distinguished by higher values of heat flux. 20% of gauging stations demonstrate an increase in heat, compared to the previous period, by 10, 39% demonstrate an increase from 10 to 25%, 36% demonstrate >25%. Since the mid-second half of the 2000s, the heat flux of the rivers in the western part of the region has signs of stabilization and even a decrease. The reason is low water flow. A violation of the stationarity of the series in terms of dispersion (F-test) was found at 30% stations with reliable and long-term observations, mainly in the eastern part. Further changes in the heat flux of the regional rivers will depend on both changes in the river water flow and temperature. Within a year, almost all annual heat flux (90–95%) is generated in the summer months and has peaks in June and July. In the Vilyuy River basin, in the upper and middle part of the Kolyma River basin and on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk, the proportion of summer months decreases to 65–90%. In addition to estimation of heat flux at the hydrological stations, the inflow of river waters into the mouths of the main rivers of the region and, in general, into the Arctic seas was assessed in various ways. The carbon emissions of the prefecture-level cities in Hebei Province were calculated using the method for carbon emissions from the land use structure. The spatial and temporal patterns of carbon emissions in Hebei Province were analyzed based on the methods of kernel density, the center of gravity migration, and the standard deviation ellipse. The carbon decoupling status of prefecturelevel cities during the study period was evaluated according to the Tapio decoupling classification system. The carbon emissions of Hebei Province showed a steady upward trend during the study period. The dispersion degree of total carbon emissions among prefecture-level cities is increasing year by year, and there is a significant spatial and temporal difference in carbon emissions. The spatial characteristics of “front-line and two-compartment” are similar to economic development. During the study period, the center of carbon emission in Hebei Province migrated slightly from southwest to northeast along the “first line” and was generally located in the southeast of the central part. The decoupling state of all prefecture-level cities experienced a general transition from a good state to a poor state, and the decoupling situation of economic growth and carbon emissions was not optimistic. In the coming period, all parts of Hebei Province will pay more attention to carbon emission reduction while focusing on economic development to achieve a win-win situation of economic growth and environmental protection. Sugarcane aphids have caused economic damage on sorghum and other grain production in Oklahoma. When applied in a timely manner, insecticides provide efficient control; however, it is difficult to protect against the unexpected heavy infestations that have appeared frequently since 2016. This article evaluates the effect of spatial and temporal patterns of weather variables on sugarcane infestation airborne movements. Econometric methods identified persistent northwesterly wind patterns that explain aphid movements. As an exquisite asset of Chinese traditional culture, traditional opera occupies a place of high esteem within the world’s cultural and artistic treasury. The impact of emerging cultures has threatened the future of traditional opera culture, necessitating a thorough examination of the historical context of the Grand Canal and traditional opera. There is insufficient research on the spatial evolution of the traditional opera culture along the Grand Canal; thus, this study takes ancient opera stages, a representative cultural relic of traditional opera, as an entry point and employs methods such as kernel density analysis and standard deviation ellipse analysis to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of the traditional opera culture along the Grand Canal. The results showed that: (i) Nationwide, opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal exhibit a significant clustering characteristic. (ii) The changes in the number and locations of opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal are closely related to the rise and fall of the Canal. The opera stages emerged along the Canal, gradually prospered with the development of the Canal, and finally clustered in a band-like cluster along the Grand Canal. (iii) From the Ming Dynasty to the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal spread in the “southeast–northwest” direction, which was consistent with the main direction of the Grand Canal, indicating its driving influence. (iv) On the centennial scale, from the 14th century to the 20th century, the evolution characteristics of the distribution centroid of opera stages in the areas along the Grand Canal were closely related to the key time nodes of Grand Canal construction and basin expansion. This study reveals the relationship between the Grand Canal and the spatial pattern evolution of traditional opera culture, aiming to promote the construction of the Grand Canal cultural belt.

The speed of urban growth affects urban development’s momentum and urban agglomeration’s spatial state. The influence of the asymmetric flow of population and land factors on the economic agglomeration effect is an essential issue in the coordinated development of urbanization. To study its impact on the orderly development of China’s urban economy, this paper selects 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region, measuring the spatial and temporal evolution of the allometric growth relationship between population and land, explores the mechanism of the effect of allometric relationships on the economic agglomeration effect. The results show that: 1) Population-land allometric growth is characterized by a transition from population to land expansion. The transition phase is divided into six stages, from positive to negative allometric growth. In terms of scaling coefficients, the period from 2000 to 2011 is characterized by negative allometric growth, and the period from 2012 to 2019 is characterized by positive allometric growth. Spatially, the Shanghai metropolitan area evolves into a positive allometric primary stage, while the core and central areas evolve into a positive allometric secondary stage, with the latter’s development transition lagging behind the former by about 10 years. 2) The spatial dependence of economic agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta is strong, showing a spatial distribution trend of “high in the middle, low in the north and south, high in the east and low in the west,” the agglomeration gap is gradually reduced, forming a “continuous area of high-value economic agglomeration” with the core area as the center and spreading outward, reflecting the efficacy of the Yangtze River Delta integrated development strategy. 3) The economic agglomeration effect of allometric growth is classified into four types: positive-allometric positive-effect, positive-allometric negative-effect, negative-allometric positive-effect, and negative-allometric negative-effect. In the Yangtze River Delta region, 70.7% of the cities have positive effects, of which 93.1% are positive-positive. 4) The allometric growth has an important impact on the reconfiguration of economic agglomeration pattern, 78% of the cities in the study period produced leapfrog movements in different quadrants, and the incongruity between population growth and land expansion should be actively regulated in the future to promote the evolution of cities towards an intensive type of population-land coordination to lead the high-quality development of the regional economy.

The evolution of rural settlements can profoundly reflect the changes in the natural environment and humanities, society and economy, but their research has not been extensively and thoroughly carried out. Taking Shache County, a typical area of southern Xinjiang, as the research area, taking advantage of remote sensing technology, using multi-source and multi-temporal remote sensing data such as CORONA and Landsat series images since the 1960s, information extraction and spatio-temporal analysis are carried out to discuss the characteristics of the temporal and spatial evolution of settlements. The conclusions are as follows. (1) The scale of rural settlements in Shache County has changed drastically in the past 50 years. The settlements have evolved from large-scale and low-density to small-scale and high-density. The number and area of settlement patches have increased significantly, especially since the new century. (2) The center of gravity of rural settlements is in Tuomuwusitang Township in the middle of the county, and it shifts to the southwest. (3) The distance between rural settlement patches continues to shrink, and the map patches continue to expand outward, in a random pattern. The core density of rural settlements has increased from low to high, and the core density of rural settlements has increased from low to high. The core density of rural settlements has developed from low to high and high values. 2000-2018 compared with 1964-2000, the distribution of high and low values of nuclear density changed drastically during the year. The water supply services of the Li River are essential for the ecological environment and local social development. Based on the InVEST model, we quantitatively analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of water supply services in the Li River Basin from 2000 to 2018 at multiple scales, including the raster, sub-basin, and regional scales, clarified the differences in water yield among different land use types, and explored the different stages of changes in the characteristics of water services. The results revealed four key aspects of this system. (1) The water supply service of Li River Basin showed a spatial distribution pattern of high in the north and low in the south, and the water yield gradually decreased from north to south. (2) Among the various land use types in Li River Basin, the average water supply capacity decreased in the following order: artificial surface, unused land, grassland, forest, cropland and wetland. (3) The average amounts of water services in the 18 sub-basins varied widely, with four sub-basins belonging to the high-value area for water supply services, eight in the middle-value area, and six in the low-value area. (4) From 2000 to 2010, the regions with large fluctuations in water supply services include the midstream region, Lipu River region, and the northern region of Gongcheng River; while from 2010 to 2018, the areas with large fluctuations were in the midstream region and Gongcheng River region. The results of this research increase our understanding of the water supply services in the Li River Basin and provide a critical scientific basis for the reverse compensation of a regional ecological compensation mechanism. In recent decades, in several parts of the world and under extreme weather conditions, we have witnessed the occurrence of numerous large-scale wildfires. This reality has also occurred in Portugal, burning thousands of hectares of forest, destroying infrastructures, and causing the regrettable loss of human lives. In view of this worsening panorama, we proceeded to the cartography of Large Forest Fires (LFF) in northwestern Portugal (larger than 100 hectares), in the period from 2001 to 2020, from the analysis of Landsat images and using Machine Learning tools and the Random Forest algorithm, in Google Earth Engine work environment. Based on the results obtained, an attempt is made to understand the LFF context in northwestern Portugal, as well as to analyse its spatial distribution and temporal evolution in the period under analysis. The conclusion is that about 158.741 ha burnt at least once and 40.9% of this area was affected by LFF a second time. The year of 2005 recorded the highest value of burnt area (73,025.1 ha). And the maximum recurrence observed, in the study area, was 7 occurrences, with a maximum recurrence of 6 times. The brush is the type of vegetation, in NUTS Ave, Alto Minho and Tâmega and Sousa, which presents more burnt area in LFF, while in Cávado, it is the forests that present the most extensive area covered by LFF. Thus, in 15 years for the study area, the most significant proportion of burnt vegetation corresponds to brush, being only in 5 years, forests were the class of the larger burnt area. In the current context of global changes and with large forest fires increasing in frequency, extent and intensity, its study and its temporal and spatial understanding are crucial, both at the regional and national scales. In the scientific literature, numerous different analyses have been reported on forest fires, in a constant effort to predict their behavior and occurrence. It is known that a variety of factors come together in these events: climatic, physiographic, socioeconomic and territorial, among others. However, although forest fires have a significant relationship with social conflict, this aspect has not been sufficiently studied. This aspect is particularly important in regions such as Galicia (Northwest Spain), where forest fires, either intentional or related to human activity, account for up to 95% of the total annual number of fires. As a measure of this social conflict, in this article, we compile the court sentences and newspaper reports, in which the montes vecinales en mano común VMC) of Galicia (a special type of property and tenure right) have been involved, which allows us to elaborate a chromatic coding that relates the three factors and allows us to detect spatio-temporal patterns. The resulting coding is a grid made up of 3034 rows and 15 columns, in which the color of each cell indicates the relationship between fires, newspaper reports, and court rulings. This coding also makes it possible to detect differences between the geographical sectors considered, which helps to detect spatio-temporal patterns and facilitates the implementation of specific prevention policies for each geographical sector. Carbon emissions from forest fires release large amounts of carbon and have important implications for the global and regional carbon cycle and atmospheric carbon concentrations. Considering the significant spatial and temporal variations in different forest fires, this study explores the relationship between different forests and carbon emissions from forest fires. This study developed a high-resolution (0.05° × 0.05°) daily global inventory of carbon emissions from biomass burning during 2016–2022. The inventory estimates of carbon emissions from biomass burning are based on the newly released FY-3 data product, satellite and observational data of biomass density, and spatial and temporal variable combustion factors. Forest fire carbon emissions were assessed using active fire data from FY-3 series satellites from 2016 to 2022, and it was linearly compared with GFED, FEER, and GFAS data on time and spatial scales with R2 of 0.7, 0.73, and 0.69, respectively. The results show spatial patterns of forest cover and carbon emissions, with South America, Africa, South-East Asia, and northern Asia as high-emission zones. The analysis shows an overall upward trend in global forest fire carbon emissions over the study period. Different types of forests exhibited specific emission patterns and temporal variations. For example, most needleleaf forest fires occur in areas with low tree cover, while broadleaf forest fires tend to occur in areas with high tree cover. The study showed that there was a relationship between inter-annual trends in forest fire carbon emissions and land cover, with biomass burning occurring mainly in the range of 60–70% tree cover. However, there were also differences between evergreen broadleaf forest, evergreen needleleaf forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, deciduous needleleaf forest, and mixed forest indicating the importance of considering differences in forest types when estimating emissions. This study identifies the main sources of carbon emissions from forest fires globally, which will help policymakers to take more targeted measures to reduce carbon emissions and provide a reliable basis for appropriate measures and directions in future carbon mitigation actions.

Climatic factors have a strong influence on the occurrence of forest diseases and pests, but few studies have systematically analyzed the influence of spring climatic factors on the occurrence of forest diseases and pests in China. We collected inventory data of forest resources, forest diseases, and pest occurrences and then analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of China’s forest diseases and pests from 1992–2019. Next, we took spring temperature accumulations ≥ 10 °C, spring average precipitation, and spring average radiation as the spring climatic factors and analyzed their influence on China’s forest diseases and pests with partial correlation and piecewise trend methods. The results showed that the incidence rate of forest diseases and pests in China had a nonlinear decreasing trend that occurred simultaneously with the growth of forested areas and the increase in forest pest and disease areas. Ultimately, the increase in forest pest and disease areas stabilized at low levels of 1% and 4%, respectively. This change generated a spatial shift from an east–west to a north–south pattern in China. Additionally, the average turning points of forest disease and pest incidence trends in China occurred in 2000 and 2005, where 56.7% and 63.3% of provinces, respectively, experienced significant shifts in forest disease and pest incidence. Finally, spring meteorological elements had a significant role in driving the mechanisms of forest disease and pest incidence in China. Among these, spring temperature accumulation was a major contributor in disease and pest variability in China. However, spring radiation and spring precipitation were important local drivers in Southwest China, though these two factors had two opposing shifts in forest diseases and pests reflected over time. This study systematically analyzed the impact of climate change on the development of forest diseases and pests in China, helping clarify the future control of forest diseases and pests in China.

Understanding the spatio-temporal patterns of users’ travel behavior on public transport (PT) systems is essential for more assertive transit planning. With this in mind, the aim of this article is to diagnose the spatial and temporal travel patterns of users of Fortaleza’s PT network, which is a trunk-feeder network whose fares are charged by a tap-on system. To this end, 20 databases were used, including global positioning system, user registration, and PT smart card data from November 2018, prior to the pandemic. The data set was processed and organized into a database with a relational model and an Extraction, Transformation, and Loading process. A data mining approach based on Machine Learning models was applied to evaluate travel patterns. As a result, it was observed that users’ first daily use has a higher percentage of spatial and temporal patterns when compared to their last daily use. In addition, users rarely show spatial and temporal patterns at the same time.

It is of great significance to analyze coupling coordination feature between urban spatial functional division (USFD) and green economic development for the realization of regional high-quality sustainable development. However, few studies have investigated the coupling between USFD and green economic development. Therefore, based on the analysis of the coupling and coordination mechanism between USFD and green development, this paper innovatively calculates the indicators of USFD and green economic development of 108 cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2009 to 2019. Moreover, we explore the spatiotemporal patterns, evolution characteristics of the coupling degree between the USFD and green economic development using the improved entropy method, coupling model, kernel density estimation and spatial autocorrelation method, and further analyzes the influence factors with the Tobit regression method. The study found that: 1) During the study period, the development level of USFD and green economy in the YREB showed a fluctuating upward trend, but the development level was still low and there was a large space for improvement. 2) During the study period, the coupling coordination degree of USFD and green economy development in the YREB shows a favorable development trend of fluctuating growth, but it is still in the stage of moderate coupling and coordination development. The coupling degree shows a trend of polarization and the phenomenon of “high-value difference and low-value convergence” over time. 3) The spatial distribution of coupling coordination degree in each region is obviously different, and the middle and lower reaches are significantly higher than the upper reaches, and there are “club convergence” phenomenon and obvious H-H and L-L spatial agglomeration characteristics. 4) Technological innovation, industrial structure and physical capital have a significant positive impact on the coupling degree of the two systems, while human capital has a restraining effect on the growth of the coupling degree. There is heterogeneity in the extent and direction of the influence of each factor on the degree of coupling between the three agglomerations. These findings have significant policy implications for the region to facilitate rational division of labor and coordinated development of the green economy.

This study analyzes the spatial and temporal characteristics of urban land use structure of more than 18,000 small towns in China by using the National Urban Land Use Survey Data between 2009 and 2013. It finds that the urban land area of small towns expanded rapidly during the research period. The spatial pattern of urban land use structure in small towns exhibits significant regional differences. Small towns in developed coastal regions, particularly those located in global urban areas, have a higher urban land use scale relative to small towns in central and western regions. However, the urban land use scale of small towns located in less developed inland areas has grown faster. The spatial distribution of urban stock land in small towns is mainly influenced by demographic and socio-economic factors. However, the spatial distribution of new urban land is primarily influenced by the land supply policy, which is tilted toward the central and western regions. In terms of structure, the proportion of production and living land in small towns is high, while the proportion of public services and facilities land is low. This trend is being strengthened, with commercial service land and industrial, mining, and storage land becoming the major drivers for the rapid rise of urban land in small towns. Human fatalities and injury from wildlife attacks often result in a negative attitude toward conservation. This research was undertaken to investigate the patterns and conflict-causing factors of human killing and injury by large mammals, especially by Asian elephant ( Elephas maximus ), common leopard ( Panthera pardus ), and Bengal tiger ( Panthera tigris tigris ) in the Bardia-Banke Complex of western Nepal. We collected human death and injury records caused by wildlife in the Bardia-Banke Complex between 2019 and 2023, based on relief applications submitted by the victim's family. Additionally, camera trap monitoring was conducted following incidents of human-tiger and human-leopard conflicts. A total of 76 incidents involving human casualties and injuries were considered for analysis. Incidents of livestock depredation, crop raiding, and property damage were excluded from the analysis. Most of the attacks on humans were caused by tigers (75%), followed by elephants (16%) and leopards (9%). Almost all incidents occurred in daytime (97%). The highest number of conflicts were recorded in 2021, with 20 incidents. Most of the cases (84%) occurred within 1 km of forest edge. Khata corridor and the western side of the Bardia National Park, i.e., Karnali River corridor, were identified as high-conflict areas. The primary causes of the conflict manifested in cattle grazing (28%), grass cutting (28%), firewood collection (11%), fishing (8%), vegetable collection (5%), sand collection (4%), during rescuing friends (3%), grazing captive elephants (3%), highway rides (3%), sleeping in Chaupadi Goth (3%), walking nearby forest areas (3%), playing nearby forest areas (1%), while feeding pig (1%), and working in agricultural lands (1%). To promote human-wildlife coexistence, community-based patrols (33%), habitat restoration (26%), electric fencing (26%), and insurance (7%) were identified as the preferred strategies. Water resources are the material basis for human social development. They play an essential role in human production and life. They are vital for the healthy growth of ecosystem services. The quantitative assessment of the water conservation (WC) function is of great significance to the management of regional ecosystems and the construction of ecological civilization. Gannan is an influential water supply area in the upper Yellow River Basin. Understanding the current status and future changes of its WC function can provide scientific support for the stable use and sustainable development of water resources in the upper Yellow River Basin; its ecological status is highly important. The present study quantitatively assesses the WC function of Gannan based on the InVEST model. It aims to explore the regional ecological compensation mechanism, enhance regional ecological regulation capacity and increase water supply by studying the trend in changes in the WC function and the influence mechanism. The results show that: (1) The overall trend in WC capacity in Gannan increased during the period 2000–2020. (2) The spatial distribution of WC in Gannan varies from year to year, but there is some similarity, showing a high degree in the southwest and a low degree in the northeast. (3) Climatic factors are the dominant factors underlying the spatial and temporal distribution of WC in Gannan. (4) The important areas of WC are located in the southwest and southeast of Gannan.

Ordos City is an important energy supply city for Chinese provinces and cities, providing a secure energy supply for China while also generating corresponding environmental pollution. Examining the spatiotemporal patterns of net primary productivity (NPP) in Ordos City and its driving factors is relevant to the realization of the carbon emission policy in Inner Mongolia. This study was undertaken to analyze NPP and its driving factors in Ordos City from 2000 to 2019 using NPP data, CO2 spatial grid data, meteorological data and statistical yearbook data accordingly. The NPP in Ordos City increased significantly from 2000 to 2019, mainly showing low values of NPP in the northwest and high values in the southeast. The usable grassland area and annual mean precipitation had a significant positive correlation with NPP, whereas the other factors had a more significant negative correlation. The usable grassland area had the largest influence on NPP, and fixed asset investment had the smallest influence on NPP. The total NPP–anthropogenic factor regression model and the mean NPP–natural factor regression model constructed allow for the prediction of NPP. Anthropogenic carbon emissions, population growth and usable grassland area were the main causes of NPP changes. Planting and protecting green plants and scientific and effective energy extraction plans are measures that enhance the degree of carbon sequestration in Ordos City.

In the context of territorial spatial planning, the overall coordinated protection has become a consensus in the field of cultural heritage protection, and the study on the spatial and temporal pattern of trans-regional cultural heritage is of great significance to the overall protection. Based on the cultural relics protection units in Jingzhou area of national great site protection, the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics and influencing factors of cultural heritage resources were studied with the help of ArcGIS. The data show that on the whole, the cultural heritage in Jingzhou area of national great site protection presented the time series of “a large span, more at two ends” and the spatial distribution pattern of “one main, two secondary and three cores”. Cultural heritage in different historical periods had the characteristics of differentiated regional aggregation. The formation of the spatial pattern of different types of cultural heritage was closely related to the local historical and cultural background. Cultural heritage was affected by rivers, terrain, transportation, land, culture and other factors. It was mainly distributed along rivers in areas with little topographic fluctuation and low altitudes. The development and construction of cultural heritage sites were weak, and the ecological foundation was poor. However, the traffic accessibility was good, and the cultural heritage was deep. This study examined the temporal and spatial changes in the urban land cover of the northern region of Jordan from 2000 to 2020. Automated processing of satellite images was carried out and different statistical indicators were applied to analyze the data. The data facilitated the monitoring of urban sprawl and determination of trends based on the Geographic Information System (GIS) and remotesensing analysis of Landsat satellite images. The results revealed an increase in urban segments, population, and reverse migration compared to neighboring areas. The classified land use and land cover maps depicted an expansion of 19.22% from 2000 to 2010 and 8.04% from 2010 to 2020. In comparison to the areas at the urban saturation stage, more rapid urban growth was observed in the seven southwest and northwest districts. Thus, the study presents reliable information and a cartographic database to demonstrate the changes in urban cover of Irbid city, over the past 20 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban rivers are recognized as significant sources of methane (CH 4) and carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions. Despite this, the influence of land use and urbanization on carbon emissions across rural-urban rivers at the watershed scale has been insufficiently explored. This study utilized in-situ surveys of the Liao River in northern China to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of CH 4 and CO 2 emissions and their relationship with urbanization and its potential controlling factors. The findings revealed that CH 4 emissions peaked in fall, whereas CO 2 emissions were highest in summer. The average fluxes of CH 4 and CO 2 at the water-gas interface were 1387.22 ± 2474.98 µmol·m−2·d−1 and 52.78 ± 54.44 mmol·m−2·d−1, respectively. Water quality parameters accounted for 80.49 % of the total variation in CH 4 and CO 2 concentrations and fluxes. Structural equation modeling indicated that TN, TP, DTC, and conductivity had direct effects on riverine CH 4 and CO 2 emissions, with standardized direct effects of 0.50 and 0.49, respectively. Nutrient input emerged as the primary driver, increasing CH 4 and CO 2 concentrations and fluxes, particularly in urban-adjacent river sections likely receiving higher nutrient loads. This study underscores that land use and urbanization indirectly influence riverine CH 4 and CO 2 emissions by modifying nutrient inputs. The global cotton trade network (CTN) has profoundly reshaped the spatial and temporal patterns of the global textile industry. Within the global CTN, a vast empire of cotton that connects continents worldwide has been built, and its center has shifted in time and space in response to intensive global cooperation and economic development. The rapid economic development of developing countries led to a shift in the center of the global CTN from 1986 to 2020. Thus, we propose the hypothesis that the cotton import center has shifted to developing countries/regions. We analyzed the evolution of the global CTN pattern from the perspective of complex network theory. The results showed that the cotton trade expanded in terms of the scale and spatial configuration of global flows and tended to be dominated by core countries. The cotton import center shifted from developed countries, such as Japan, South Korea and Italy, to developing countries, such as China, Bangladesh, Turkey and Indonesia. The cotton export center shifted from Asia to the United States and Brazil. The global CTN community evolved from a "multipolar" balanced pattern to a "unipolar" imbalanced pattern. Global institutional, political and international trade shifts profoundly affected the global CTN. Economic development level and natural resource endowment were the dominant drivers of network formation. Recently, the effects of the distance between trading countries, the use of a common official language and international organizations have diminished. Sugarcane aphids have caused economic damage on sorghum and other grain production in Oklahoma. When applied in a timely manner, insecticides provide efficient control; however, it is difficult to protect against the unexpected heavy infestations that have appeared frequently since 2016. This article evaluates the effect of spatial and temporal patterns of weather variables on sugarcane infestation airborne movements. Econometric methods identified persistent northwesterly wind patterns that explain aphid movements. Results serve as a base for sugarcane aphid infestation predictions and to assist stakeholders in developing an early warning system for sorghum producers.

Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) creates highly productive habitats in coastal areas, providing support for many important species of fish and wildlife. Despite the importance and documented loss of SAV across fresh to marine habitats globally, we lack consistent baseline data on estuarine SAV resources, particularly in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) estuaries. To understand SAV distribution in the NGOM, SAV biomass and species identity were collected at 384 sites inter-annually (June–September; 2013–2015) from Mobile Bay, Alabama, to San Antonio Bay, Texas, USA. Coastwide, SAV distribution and biomass were consistent across years, covering an estimated 87,000 ha, and supporting approximately 16 ± 1% total cover with an average biomass of 24.5 ± 1.9 g m−2. Differences in hydrology (i.e., precipitation, freshwater input, water depth) and exposure (i.e., wave and wind energy) manifested in unique SAV assemblages and biomass distributions across the region (i.e., Coastal Mississippi-Alabama, Mississippi River Coastal Wetlands, Chenier Plain, Texas Mid-Coast) and estuarine gradient (i.e., marsh zones defined as fresh, intermediate, brackish, saline). Descriptive cluster analyses identified indicator SAV species, known as medoid observations that represented combined salinity, turbidity, and depth conditions unique to different region and marsh zone combinations. While the presence of SAV is often used as an indicator of ecological health, identifying a medoid-based SAV indicator species in aquatic habitats can be used to describe estuarine conditions in more detail and develop aquatic habitat zones. Exploration and the use of this type of field data could be developed as a means to track, manage, and define aquatic habitats across regional and estuarine gradients and further develop ecosystem-based assessment and restoration activities. Identifying aquatic zones through a representative medoid associates SAV species with locations defined by both long-term salinity and salinity variability, water depth, and exposure, which is a powerful potential tool for managers and restoration decision-makers.
