Introduction: The periodontal diseases lead to the morphological and functional disintegration of the tooth-supporting apparatus, and a basic concept of surgical periodontal therapy is the elimination of periodontal pockets with the bone remodelling and creating the physiological architecture at a more apical level, thereby achieving better conditions for dental plaque control. The progenitor cell population in the periodontal ligament is served for the reconstruction of lost epithelial attachment. Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) is a procedure that allows for the repair of a periodontal defect by cells capable of creating new connective tissue attachment and alveolar bone, and the aim is a minimization of postoperative gingival recession. The objectives of GTR are the creation of a new epithelial attachment, an increase in the bone level, and the minimization of postoperative gingival recession. Aim: Presentation of modern approaches, materials, prognostic factors as well as complications of periodontal therapy that are focused on attachment regeneration and complete reconstruction of periodontal tissue. Conclusion: The difference in terms of outcomes of regenerative periodontal therapy relates to the degree of patient's cooperation with the therapist, the level of oral hygiene, the selection of an appropriate bone defect, as well as the methods of surgery. The high level of dental plaque control, elimination of pathogenic microflora and intensive antimicrobial periodontal therapy improve the outcome of periodontal regenerative therapy.

Introduction: Canine impaction is a very common orthodontic anomaly. In order to achieve successful results, it is necessary to understand etiological factors. Aim the analysis of cephalometric characteristics of patients with impacted permanent canines. Materials and methods: The study included 70 patients (mean age 14 ± 2.04 years), 50 females and 20 males, who met the study criteria. Based on the position of the impacted tooth, the patients were divided into 2 groups. Sagittal (SNA, SNB, ANB) and vertical (FMA) angular parameters were analysed, as well as linear parameters (the length of the body of the maxilla to the cranial base). Results: In the studied population, 30.0% of the patients comprised Angle Class I, 44.3% of patients Angle Class II, whereas the smallest number of patients, 25.7%, was classified as Angle Class III. By analysing the FMA angle, the < 22º category (horizontal growth), the 22-28º category (normal growth pattern), and the > 28º category (vertical growth pattern) included 38.6%, 45.7%, and 15.7% of the patients, respectively. The body of the maxilla did not differ significantly between the palatal and vestibular position of the impacted canine (p = 0.405). Conclusion: The study did not reveal any statistically significant differences between the studied groups.

Introduction: Caries risk assessment is the essential step in the modern clinical approach to caries management. It is a basic prerequisite for the development of preventive measures and strategies for the primary prevention of caries. Its reliability is conditioned by the knowledge of relevant caries risk factors - indicators and predictors of caries. Aim: After reviewing the available literature, the paperwork aimed to analyse the importance of salivary levels of cationic antimicrobial peptides as indicators and predictors of caries in children, i.e., their possible role in caries risk assessment in children. Material and methods: The analysis included original articles in English which studied the association of salivary levels of cationic antimicrobial peptides with caries in children. Three databases were selected: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, and the search was performed using the following keywords: saliva cationic peptides /antimicrobial peptides /AMP/ defensins/ cathelicidin/histatin/statherin/adrenomedullin/azurocidin AND dental caries AND children/children age. Conclusion: Cationic antimicrobial peptides could be important caries risk indicators in children. Unfortunately, there is currently no reliable evidence of their caries predictive value. Well-designed cross-sectional and long-term longitudinal studies are still required to clarify the significance of salivary cationic antimicrobial peptides as reliable caries risk indicators and caries predictors in children. At the same time, this would define their significance as caries risk biomarkers and their potential application in caries risk assessment in children.

The control of Candida albicans biofilm formation on dentures made of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is an important challenge due to the high resistance to antifungal drugs. Interestingly, the natural compounds undecylenic acid (UDA) and farnesol (FAR) both prevent C. albicans biofilm formation and could have a synergetic effect. We therefore modified PMMA with a combination of UDA and FAR (UDA+FAR), aiming to obtain the antifungal PMMA_UDA+FAR composites. Equal concentrations of FAR and UDA were added to PMMA to reach 3%, 6%, and 9% in total of both compounds in composites. The physico-chemical properties of the composites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and water contact angle measurement. The antifungal activity of the composites was tested on both biofilm and planktonic cells with an XTT test 0 and 6 days after the composites' preparation. The effect of the UDA+FAR combination on C. albicans filamentation was studied in agar containing 0.0125% and 0.4% UDA+FAR after 24 h and 48 h of incubation. The results showed the presence of UDA and FAR on the composite and decreases in the water contact angle and metabolic activity of both the biofilm and planktonic cells at both time points at non-toxic UDA+FAR concentrations. Thus, the modification of PMMA with a combination of UDA+FAR reduces C. albicans biofilm formation on dentures and could be a promising anti-Candida strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Under the concept of regenerative periodontal therapy, there are two approaches: the first is the passive regeneration conceptthat includes bone substituents and guided periodontal regeneration by using of biomembranes and the second concept of active regeneration that impliesthe use of growth factors. The aim of the passive regeneration, by using of bone matrix (bone substituens) has been stabilization and bone defects management, preventing epithelial tissue growth, as well as saving space for the new tissue regeneration. This concept implies the use of autogenous transplantats, xenografts, allografts, as well as alloplastic materials. The carriers for active tissue regeneration, growth factors -GF are biological mediators that regulate cellular processes and that is crucial for the tissue regeneration. Aim:Presentation ofmodern approaches to periodontal therapy thatare focused on the attachment regeneration and complete reconstruction of periodontal tissue. Conclusion: In the future, periodontal regenerative therapy with periodontalligament progenitor cells should encourage repopulation of the areas that have been affected by periodontal disease.

Salivary gland tumors are neoplasms characterized by a high level of pleomorphism and histological overlap. One tumor may contain several cell types; therefore, it is necessary to include immunohistochemical staining, as well as morphometric analysis of tumor cells as prerequisites for an appropriate diagnosis. Our research included 120 tumors, such as pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin tumor, basal cell adenoma, myoepithelioma, adenoid cystic carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, salivary duct carcinoma, polymorphous low-grade carcinoma and myoepithelial carcinoma. The aim of the study was to differentiate benign and malignant tumors based on the characteristics of nuclei. The expression of Ki67 and the morphometric nuclear parameters – area, perimeter, Feret diameter, integrated optical density, circularity, and roundness, were analyzed. Introduction: Permanent tooth avulsions (traumatic extraction; total luxation) are one ofthe most severe permanent tooth injuries and can occur as single injuries or associated with other dental injuries or injuries to the face and jaws region. They are defined as the luxation of teeth from the alveoli with complete rupture of periodontal fibres, or with one part attached to the rootcementum and the other to the alveolar bone, thus compromising the dental pulp, root cementum,and alveolar bone. The high prevalence and numerous negative consequences on the stomatognathic systems they have suggest permanent tooth avulsions should be regarded as an important public health problem. The aim: is to point out the therapeutic possibilities of permanent tooth avulsion that can ensure their longer survival in the oral cavity. Conclusion: The treatment strategy for avulsed permanent teeth is always based on limiting root canal infection and periradicular inflammation, shifting the balance from unfavourable (replacement resorption) to favourable (periodontal) healing. The success of therapy and periodontal healing depend on the duration and conditions of extraoral tooth preservation, the degree of damage to the periodontal ligament, and the condition of the pulp.

Introduction: After marsupialisation of large jaw cysts, there comes to the formation of bone defects which do not guarantee the stability of the blood clot and therefore are filled with iodine gauze. Any replacement of iodine gauze, toilet of the wound, causes minor or major bleeding, which slows wound epithelialisation and organization. Therefore, making the partial acrylic denture obturator is recommended to be done a few weeks after the surgery. Case report: This work presents two patients who had partial acrylic denture obturator made on the tenth day after the surgery. This allowed significantly easier toilet of the wounds, faster epithelialization and organization, and thus faster bone healing. Conclusion: Restored function of chewing, swallowing and speech, as well as the aesthetic appearance suggest that early use of acrylic obturator prosthesis is very significant.

Introduction: Local anesthetics are the most commonly used drugs in everyday dental and medical and increasingly in cosmetic practice. Today there are a number of local anesthetics that are divided into two groups based on their structure: ester and amide local anesthetics. Although their use in everyday work is generally safe, there is a possibility of adverse reactions that may be psychogenic, toxic, immunologic and specific adverse reactions. The aim of this work is to highlight the mechanism of occurrence and symptoms of possible adverse reactions to local anesthetics. Conclusion: If you experience systemic adverse reactions to the local anesthetic, the biggest problem in clinical practice, is a recognition of the nature of adverse reactions and providing appropriate therapy in conjunction with the resulting reaction. Speed and security to identify adverse reactions to local anesthetic can be of vital importance for the patient.

Appliances that use electromagnetic radiation in the form of high frequency radioablation are increasingly applied in many branches of medicine and in recent times in oral surgery. They work on the same principle as the electrocauteries, with the difference that the electrocauteries use wave frequencies from 300kHz to 500kHz and the radiolayers use the frequency of wavelengths of 4MHz. This allows them a far lower energy penetration depth, less destruction and limited lateral tissue damage, without burning effect. Wound healing is faster, scarring is less, and cosmetic effect is more pronounced. During one year at the Department of Oral Surgery, a radiotherapeutic appliance is used in many oral surgery interventions. Treatment of non-contact tissues simultaneously with a hemostatic effect or pure coagulation is performed very easily and successfully. The appliance is tested when working on soft tissue of the skin and mucous membranes. With proper and professional handling any adverse effects are avoided. Special attention should be paid to patients with cardiac pacemaker and adhere to the protocol. It patient has dental implants, touching them is contraindicated while working with active electrode. Conclusion: The radiowave surgery has advantages in relation to conventional surgery wiht respect on indication areas.

The mental foramen is an important anatomic landmark not only in dentistry but also in forensics, and the knowledge about its accurate location is important in receiving local anesthesia, during surgical and endodontic procedures. The purpose of this study was to determine the most common position and shape of the mental foramen in the Southeast Serbian population. Three hundred panoramic radiographs were analyzed and the horizontal position of the mental foramen was determined according to the reference lines drawn at the longitudinal axes of the first and the second premolar and the mesial root of the first molar. In 62% of the cases mental foramen was between longitudinal axes of the first and the second premolar, in 21% it was in line with the second premolar, in 9% in line with the first premolar, in 8% between the axes of the second premolar and the first molar. The most common shape was round (54%). The horizontal position and shape were asymmetrical in 26% and 32% of the cases, respectively. The most common position of the mental foramen was between the first and the second premolar, while the most common shape was round. Knowledge about variable positions of the mental foramen is important in establishing diagnosis and clinical procedures in the region of the mandible.

Introduction: Salivary gland tumors are extremely rare neoplasms. Given their pathohistological image, these tumors represent a great diagnostic challenge. The aim of our study was to differentiate these three tumor types by applying the immunohistochemical and morphometric analysis. Material and Methods: The entire study was conducted at the Center for Pathology and Pathological Anatomy in Niš. The study included 44 tumors, 20 pleomorphic adenomas, 12 basal cells adenomas and 12 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas. The expression of Ki67, p53 and HER-2 antigens, as proliferation markers, was analyzed. The differential diagnostics also included the analysis of the expression of CEA, EMA, GFAP, p63, vimentin, CK14, α-SMA, S-100 protein and WT1 antigen. The morphometric analysis was done in the program pack 'ImageJ' version 1.43u. The statistical analysis of data was done in the program pack SPSS 15.0. Results: Neoplastic cells in pleomorphic adenoma showed a strong expression of GFAP (20/20), p63 (20/20), WT1 (20/20), vimentin (18/20) and S100 (16/20). Diffuse expression of CK14 (12/12) was present in the group of 12 polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinomas. S-100, vimentin and EMA were absolutely expressed, whereas α-SMA was negative. Basal cell adenoma showed negativity to S-100, CEA, p63 and vimentin. The analysis of the proliferative Ki67 index values pointed to a statistically significant difference in the pleomorphic adenoma group, which was associated with a frequent recurrence of this benign tumor. The analysis of morphometric characteristics showed higher values in the polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma group, but statistically significant differences were found only for the Feret diameter and the integrated optical density (p < 0.05). As for the basal cell adenoma group, tumor cells showed statistically higher values for the integrated optical density (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Apart from the basic micromorphological analysis, the differential analysis of salivary gland tumors also requires the immunohistochemical analysis as well as the monitoring of morphometric characteristics of these tumors' nuclei.

Introduction. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma, compared to other tumors of salivary glands, occurs in 5-10% of cases. Histopathologically, it is divided into a well differentiated tumor that is of low-grade of malignancy, and a medium and poorly differentiated tumor of high grade of malignancy. Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (CMEC) of the mandible was firstly described by Lepp in 1936, on a 66-year-old female patient. CMEC is characterized by atypical clinical image and radiological manifestation. Case Outline. A 55-year-old female patient was examined at the Clinic of Dentistry in Niš, Serbia, with anamnestic data regarding the presence of painless swelling in the right side of the mandible. Considering the histopathological results and presence of enlarged lymph nodes, right hemimandibulectomy and tumour excision from pterygomandibular space followed by supraomohyoid neck dissection was done. In due course, postoperative radiotherapy was applied (60 Gy). Conclusion. CMEC represents a rare tumor, characterized by local tissue destruction and ability to metastasize. Initial biopsy represented the key in preoperative planing. Radical excision with neck lymph node dissection followed by postoperative radiotherapy in our case represent a successful method of treating CMEC of the mandible.

Background/Aim. Ropivacaine is a relatively new longacting local anesthetic. The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative analgesic effect of topical anesthetics ropivacaine 0.75% and lidocaine 2% with adrenaline in the postoperative treatment of periapical lesions in the maxilla. Methods. The study was conducted on 60 subjects, divided into two groups. The study-group received 0.75% ropivacaine without a vasoconstrictor, while the control group was treated with 2% lidocaine with adrenaline (1 : 80.000). Block anesthesia for n. infraorbitalis was used and local anesthetics were applied also on the palatine side for the end branches of n. nasopalatinus. The following parameters were observed: time elapsed from the application of an anesthetic until the first occurrence of pain after the surgery and first intake of an analgesic, the intensity of initial pain, pain intensity 6 h after the application of anesthetics and the total number of analgesics taken within 24 h after the completion of surgery. Results. The pain appeared statistically significantly earlier in the patients who had been given lidocaine with adrenaline (p < 0.001), while statistically significantly higher mean values of initial postoperative pain (p < 0.05) and pain intensity 6 h after the intervention (p < 0.01) were also registered in the same group of patients. In the period of 24 h upon the intervention, the study-group patients were taking less analgesics as compared to the control-group subjects (46.6% vs 73.3%), who were given analgesics earlier, although no statistically significant differences were observed related to the number of analgesic doses taken. Conclusion. The results of our study indicate a better postoperative analgesic effect of ropivacaine as compared to lidocaine with adrenaline.

The aim of this study was to estimate heritability and genetic correlations between weight, length and height of common carp in Serbia (Cyprinus carpio L.) during 3-year growth period. The 50 families of common carp were produced in 2007 and used for the estimation of genetic parameters. The fish were measured at tagging for weight, length and height (W0, L0, H0), then during the first autumn (W1, L1, H1) and during the second autumn (W2, L2, H2). Based on univariate models heritability estimates were high for all traits (0.39, 0.34 and 0.45 for W1, L1 and H1, respectively) and also for the second production year (0.49, 0.47 and 0.44 for W2, L2 and H2, respectively). The genetic correlations were estimated using multivariate models and they were high between W1 and L1 and H1 (0.81 ± 0.06 and 0.91 ± 0.03 for L1 and H1, respectively), while between H1 and L1 were moderately correlated (0.54 ± 0.12). In the second production year genetic correlations were also high, between W2 and L2 and H2 (0.64 ± 0.09 and 0.74 ± 0.06, respectively), while between length and height they were lower (0.24 ± 0.15). Based on the current results improving growth rate of common carp through genetic selection is expected to be effective.

Farm animal welfare assessment is an important issue more than two decades in the world, and last years in Serbia. Although based on the same principles as in terrestrial animals on-farm fish welfare assessment is more complex. The most used and best defined assessment methods are established for Atlantic salmon, while their development for other economically important species and different rearing systems is still in progress. In this paper, some aspects of common carp welfare in tanks of recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) are discussed. Furthermore, possibilities for its assessment by scoring method based on the values of selected environmental, production and health parameters are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Oro-antral communications (OAC) greater than 4–5mm in diameter can seldom be counted on to heal spontaneously without the necessity for surgical closure. The initial experience in applying an absorbable polyglactin/polydioxanon implant (Ethisorb®), in non-surgical closure of OAC ranging from 5 to 7mm in diameter, is presented. Twelve patients of varying ages with OAC up to72h in duration, have been treated with Ethisorb®. Failures were not demonstrated in the form of the creation of an oro-antral fistula (OAF), and in all patients, OAC-s were closed with the epithelization of post-extraction wounds up to 21 days after implantation of Ethisorb®. Based on these initial encouraging results, we propose that an Ethisorb® biopolymeric absorbable implant can be used in selected clinical cases for non-surgical closure of OAC. Introduction: The process of wound healing after tooth extraction has been studied in several animal species under normal and experimental conditions that might interfere with the healing. Chronology of wound healing after tooth extraction (molars and incisors), which consists in several phases, has been examined by histological, radiological, immunohistochemistry, stereology (bone volumetry), and densitometry methods and by using of micro-camera to determine the volume fraction of histological components. The aim of this study is to analyze the process of healing of normal extraction wound and to determine the period of time it takes for the postextraction wound to completely heal. Material and method: The research is based on the literature available in electronic databases Pubmed/Medline, Kobson, Googlescholar. The totals of 22 papers which follow the normal course of healing were found; 7 papers met the criteria regarding the complete description of the healing process in the socket after tooth extraction in rats. Results: On the second day after the extraction wound starts with forming epithelium. The first sign of bone tissue has appeared four days after the extraction as subperiostal osteogenesis. On fourth and fifth day, in some fibroblasts differentiation in osteoblasts has already begun.. On the fifth day the delicate trabecules of young bone attached to the walls of the socket in its basal part can be seen, and the signs of ossification are clearly indicated by a darker shadow in the central part of the apical third of the socket present in the x ray. The end of the epitelization is on the eighth day, when the lamina Dura was slightly less pronounced, while the lower parts of the socket have a pronounced X-ray shadow. In most of the specimens, the socket has been completely filled with reticular bone on day 14. The socket has been filled with young bone after 20 days. Presence of lamelar bone can be seen 60th day after exraction. Remodelation of aveolar ridges lasts until 112th day. Conclusion: The healing of normal extraction wounds in rats begins with the appearance of the epithelium of the second postoperative day, and the end of the epitelization is on the eighth day. Formation of bone begins on the fourth day after the exodontia. The intense bone formation lasts until the twentieth postoperative day when the young r bone fills the socket. Lamellar bone is present on 60th days after extraction. Application of bone morfogenetic protein, low power laser and polarized light had no expected effect on the healing of the extraction wound in experimental rats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Oral surgical procedures are usually accompanied by severe and long lasting pain that intensify after the intervention and lasting several hours. Surgical practice had need for long-acting local anesthetics first applied since 1957, to provide indolence during and after the intervention that have proved to be effective for the suppresion for both intraoperative and postoperative pain. This paper is an overview of characteristics of long acting local anesthetics used in oral surgery, as well as our experience in their implementation. Ropivacaine and bupivacaine has equal onset of effects and length of action, quality of anesthesia is higher than the bupivacaine, causes less motor block and has a less CVS and CNS toxicity then bupivacaine. We conclude that in case of need for the long acting local anesthetic, priority should be given to ropivacaine over etidocaine and bupivacaine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radicular cysts are the most frequent bone lessions which appears in childhood. Their appearance is in connection with gangrenous teeth of permanent dentition. Folicular cysts are somewhat rare bone lessions but their appearance is in connection with impacted teeth of permanent dentition. Because of that they appear a little bit later, i.e. when they begin to sprout out. In this work has been given an interesting case report of enucleated radicular cyst caused by gangrenous second lower deciduous molar. All clinical indicators have shown follicular cyst, but microscopic finding gave completely different results. The rule that definitive diagnosis of lesion's character should be made only after approved histopathology analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
