This article innovatively combines the analysis of both cultural and outdoor activities in Canada, activities that have been mostly studied separately until now. This study thus feeds into the debate between the distinction framework (focusing on the highbrow/lowbrow opposition) and the omnivorism thesis (distinguishing between omnivorous and univorous groups) in cultural sociology. From Latent Class Analysis (LCA), this study identifies five clusters, which differentiate people practicing either or both cultural and outdoor activities. The clusters are labelled as follow: 'tele-univore,' 'digital indoor,' 'conventional indoor,' 'outdoor univore,' and 'omnivore.' Binary logistic regressions reveal that education, age and rural/urban identity are the key factors in identifying who practices which activities. The findings are threefold. First, while confirming the omnivore theory, our results show that cultural capital matters more than economic capital in explaining who participates in which activities. Second, rural people tend to be slightly more engaged than urban people in consumptive and motorized outdoor activities and less in all cultural activities. Third, the shift to digitization and the increase in outdoor activities appears to have exacerbated the divide between older and younger generations. Cette etude alimente ainsi le debat entre la these de la distinction (centree sur l'opposition entre le savant et le populaire) et celle de l'omnivorisme (distinguant les groupes omnivores et univores) en sociologie culturelle. A partir d'une analyse des classes latentes (ACL), cette etude identifie cinq classes, qui differencient les personnes pratiquant des activites culturelles, de plein air ou les deux. Les classes sont etiquetees comme suit : 'univores televisuels', 'connectes interieurs', 'classiques interieurs', 'univores plein air' et 'omnivores'. Des regressions logistiques binaires revelent que l'education, l'age et l'identite rurale/urbaine sont les facteurs cles pour identifier qui pratique quelles activites. Les conclusions sont de trois ordres. Premierement, tout en confirmant la theorie de l'omnivorisme culturel, nos resultats montrent que le capital culturel compte plus que le capital economique pour expliquer qui participe a quelles activites. Deuxiemement, les ruraux ont tendance a etre legerement plus engages que les urbains dans les activites de plein air motorisees ou visant la consommation et moins dans toutes les activites culturelles. The rural landscape of the Malay Peninsula has been symbolically represented as a site of Malay traditions. As such, it has been marked by the dominant image of a homogenous Malay community and the hidden presence of 'other Malays'. This paper discusses the rural representation and village-making practices of the Bugis Malays who work to create a place-identity in the rural landscape. It argues that despite the racialization of the rural landscape, the creation of Bugis place in the rural Malay Peninsula affirms and advances the cultural dimension of Malay rurality. Drawing from sixty in-depth interviews and participant observation, this paper sheds light on the culturally distinctive imaginations of Malay rurality. In rural, remote, and northern parts of Canada, the pre-existing vulnerability and risk for intimate partner violence has been exacerbated by COVID-19. The purpose of this commentary is to identify the unique impact of COVID-19 on intimate partner violence both in terms of the bearing on those experiencing abuse and on the service sector in rural, remote and northern communities where the rates of intimate partner violence and intimate partner femicide pre-pandemic are higher than in larger cities. The recommendations offered in this paper include enhanced safety planning, alternate housing for victims fleeing violence, and suggestions for service providers. Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a global problem that requires intervention, yet women residing in rural areas still face challenges in dealing with it. There are no specific studies on the barriers to the use of formal support systems by victims of IPV in rural areas in Zimbabwe. Therefore, this study explored barriers that exist in the use of formal support systems by victims of IPV residing in rural areas in Zimbabwe. A qualitative study was conducted with 25 women between the ages of 19 and 49 years who reside in a rural area in Chimanimani District (Zimbabwe). Study participants were recruited using purposive sampling and on the basis that they had experienced IPV in their former intimate relationships and were not current victims. In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with the study participants. Interviews were audio-recorded with the consent of participants and data transcribed verbatim. The data was analysed using thematic analysis. Findings from the study suggest that the desire to preserve marriages, the attitudes of service providers, concerns with confidentiality, and lack of resources were barriers that victims of IPV faced in seeking formal help. Women in rural areas face challenges in accessing and using formal support systems even though they have the same risks of IPV perpetration as women in residing in urban areas. The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic at the time of writing this article (November 2020), the 2008 Lehman Shock, and governmental revitalization policies introduced by the Abe government have resulted in a rise in urban lifestyle migrants who relocate to rural areas across Japan for noneconomic reasons. This ethnographic article focuses on individuals in Tokushima and Shimane Prefectures. Critically questioning conventional notions of work and lifestyle, these individuals struggle to implement their ideal lifestyles in their rural environments that are often characterized by deeply ingrained local societal norms and values. Drawing on longitudinal fieldwork since 2016, I will examine three cases of lifestyle migrants who have chosen to pursue radically different careers. While they make great efforts to blend into the community that they have relocated to, they also refer to transnational features in their pursuit of experimental lifestyles. This multi-sited ethnography aims to explore the 'power of the between' by Paul Stoller (2009) and the 'potential of the liminal' coined by Vincent Crapanzano (2004) as my interlocutors courageously carve out original careers that are catered to their own needs, but also engage with the local community. The problem of domestic violence is not new to African societies. This study focused on the remote causes and implications of domestic violence among rural women. The study adopted a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The respondents were selected using stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Findings revealed that 82.3% of the respondents agree that the economic dependence of women on men is among the major causes of domestic violence, while 52.3% of respondents believe that their communities encourage and tolerate some abusive behavior. A total of 61.5% of the respondents posit that religious and traditional beliefs aid the persistence of domestic violence. On the implications of domestic violence, 84.6% of the respondents agree that children of domestic violent homes will model their behavior according to their experiences. The [X.sup.2] value of 13.437 is significant at 3.841 and shows that domestic violence has a serious psychological implication on women. Lack of authorities to report cases of violence to and fear of the consequences of such reports prevented many of these rural women from seeking help when they were abused. This study posits that advocacy groups should employ more practical and appropriate communication mechanisms peculiar to each rural area. Specifically, the use of indigenous languages to form songs, playlet, and proverbs to communicate the implications of domestic violence against women in their communities should be encouraged. Community and women leaders should ensure that women who report cases of domestic abuse are adequately protected from the perpetrators. In doing this, they are able to accept the sensitization processes rather than disregard them or term them 'western'. Women are the pioneers of traditional mural art practices in rural India. Warli art, Gond art, and Madhubani paintings are examples of their artworks. The women belonging to the Santhal region in eastern India, are highly skilled in rich rural vernacular art. Murals are generally created by them during local festivals and marriage ceremonies. The women of six districts that comprise the Santhal Pargana (2) (Dumka, Godda, Deoghar, Jamtara, Pakur and Sahibganj), decorate their mud houses during these occasions with visual borders and motifs. A pilot study was carried out with the women artists to research these murals. The framework for the visual analysis is based on distinct symmetry operations such as translation, rotation, reflection, and glide reflection. This article documents the intimate relationship between drama and ritual in rural China. Drama was an indispensable means of entertaining the deities, enticing them down from the heavens to receive human offerings. The xinggan dramas examined in this article, however, were distinctive in that their content was actually thematically related to the Fanjiulou salvation ritual during which they were performed. Xinggan dramas not only entertained the deities but also provided a means by which audiences were able to visualize in the drama the very process of salvation that the simultaneous conduct of the Fanjiulou ritual was meant to effect. Reasons on why couples in rural China who have a son or whose last child is a son obtain higher conditional income are investigated. The assumption in which income-based sex selection renders it more probable that richer households have sons is presented and tested. This article investigates the effect of family life course transitions on labor allocation strategies in rural Chinese households. We highlight three types of economic activity that involve reallocation of household labor oriented toward a more diversified, nonfarm rural economy: involvement in wage employment, household entrepreneurship, and/or multiple activities that span economic sectors. With the use of data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS 1997, 2000, and 2004), our longitudinal analyses of rural household economic activity point to the significance of household demography, life course transitions, and local economic structures as factors facilitating household labor reallocation. First, as expected, a relatively youthful household structure is conducive to innovative economic behavior. Second, household entrances and exits are significant, but their impacts are not equal. Life events such as births, deaths, marriage, or leaving home for school or employment affect household economy in distinctive ways. Finally, the reallocations of household labor undertaken by households are shaped by local economic structures: in particular, the extent of village-level entrepreneurial activity, off-farm employment, and out-migration.
