This monograph focuses on methanol and its utilization in transportation sector, namely in spark ignition (SI) engines. The contents focus on methanol production and presents a variety of production technologies from different feedstocks. The potential of methanol utilization in transportation in SI engines is discussed, its challenges, limitations, aspects related to its utilization and current global use of methanol are also presented. The book also contains chapters related to pollutant formation and exhaust emissions from methanol fuelled SI engines, one chapter is focused specifically on formaldehyde emissions, which possesses one of the greatest challenges of methanol use in IC engines. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden sowohl (regenerative) Kraftstoffe unterschiedlicher Zusammensetzung als auch die regenerativ herstellbaren Kraftstoffkomponenten Ethanol, Isopropanol, Isobutanol und MTBE in einem direkteinspritzenden Ottomotor untersucht. Dabei wurde der Schwerpunkt auf die Emissionen von Kohlenwasserstoffen, Stickoxiden, Kohlenstoffmonoxid sowie die Partikelanzahl gelegt. Die Versuche wurden unter folgenden Betriebsbedingungen durchgeführt: eine Variation des Einspritzbeginns, eine Lambdavariation bei kaltem Motor im Katalysator-Heiz-Betrieb sowie eine AGR-Raten-Variation einer extern zugeführten und gekühlten AGR. Die Ergebnisse konnten mit der Zusammensetzung und den Eigenschaften der Kraftstoffe und Kraftstoffkomponenten in Verbindung gebracht werden. Unterstützend wurde ein 0D/1D-Simulationsmodell erstellt, in dem die Kraftstoffe mit ihren entsprechenden Eigenschaften definiert wurden. Dadurch konnten Rückschlüsse auf die Unterschiede in der Verbrennung, auf den Wirkungsgrad sowie auf die Stickoxidbildung gezogen werden.

For a century, almost all light-duty vehicles (LDVs) have been powered by internal combustion engines operating on petroleum fuels. Energy security concerns about petroleum imports and the effect of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on global climate are driving interest in alternatives. Transitions to Alternative Vehicles and Fuels assesses the potential for reducing petroleum consumption and GHG emissions by 80 percent across the U.S. LDV fleet by 2050, relative to 2005. This report examines the current capability and estimated future performance and costs for each vehicle type and non-petroleum-based fuel technology as options that could significantly contribute to these goals.
