We consider a dispersive equation of Schrödinger type with a nonlinearity slightly larger than cubic by a logarithmic factor. This equation is supposed to be an effective model for stable two dimensional quantum droplets with Lee-Huang-Yang correction. Mathematically, it is seen to be mass supercritical and energy subcritical with a sign-indefinite nonlinearity. For the corresponding initial value problem, we prove global in-time existence of strong solutions in the energy space. Furthermore, we prove the existence and uniqueness (up to symmetries) of nonlinear ground states and the orbital stability of the set of energy minimizers. We study the strong magnetic field limit for a nonlinear Iwatsuka-type model, i.e. a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two spatial dimensions with a magnetic vector potential that only depends on the x -coordinate. Using a high-frequency averaging technique, we show that this equation can be effectively described by a nonlocal nonlinear model, which is no longer dispersive. We consider the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation of up to three space dimensions. The cubic nonlinearity is thereby focusing while the quintic one is defocusing, ensuring global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem in the energy space. The main goal of this paper is to investigate the interplay between dispersion and orbital (in-)stability of solitary waves. In space dimension one, it is already known that all solitons are orbitally stable. In dimension two, we show that if the initial data belong to the conformal space, and have at most the mass of the ground state of the cubic two-dimensional Schrödinger equation, then the solution is asymptotically linear. For larger mass, solitary wave solutions exist, and we review several results on their stability. We prove the existence of a class of orbitally stable bound state solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with super-quadratic confinement in two and three spatial dimensions. These solutions are given by time-dependent rotations of a non-radially symmetric spatial profile which in itself is obtained via a doubly constrained energy minimization. One of the two constraints imposed is the total mass, while the other is given by the expectation value of the angular momentum around the z-axis. We revisit the time-adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics and show that it can be extended to weakly nonlinear situations, that is to nonlinear Schrödinger equations in which either the nonlinear coupling constant or, equivalently, the solution is asymptotically small. To this end, a notion of criticality is introduced at which the linear bound states stay adiabatically stable, but nonlinear effects start to show up at leading order in the form of a slowly varying nonlinear phase modulation. Using a Fourier spectral method, we provide a detailed numerical investigation of dispersive Schrödinger-type equations involving a fractional Laplacian in an one-dimensional case. By an appropriate choice of the dispersive exponent, both mass and energy sub- and supercritical regimes can be identified. This allows us to study the possibility of finite time blow-up versus global existence, the nature of the blow-up, the stability and instability of nonlinear ground states and the long-time dynamics of solutions. We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a focusing cubic term and a defocusing quintic nonlinearity in dimensions two and three. The main interest of this article is the problem of orbital (in-)stability of ground state solitary waves. We recall the notions of energy minimizing versus action minimizing ground states and prove that, in general, the two must be considered as nonequivalent. We consider nonlinear Schrödinger equations with either local or nonlocal nonlinearities. In addition, we include periodic potentials as used, for example, in matterwave experiments in optical lattices. By considering the corresponding semiclassical scaling regime, we construct asymptotic solutions, which are concentrated both in space and in frequency around the effective semiclassical phase-space flow induced by Bloch's spectral problem. The dynamics of these generalized coherent states is governed by a nonlinear Schrödinger model with effective mass. Abstract: We study a nonlinear Schrödinger equation arising in the mean field description of dipolar quantum gases. Under the assumption of sufficiently strong dipolar interactions, the existence of standing waves, and hence solitons, is proved together with some of their properties. This gives a rigorous argument for the possible existence of solitary waves in Bose–Einstein condensates, which originate solely due to the dipolar interaction between the particles. As a simple model for piezoelectricity we consider a gas of infinitely many non-interacting electrons subject to a slowly time-dependent periodic potential. We show that in the adiabatic limit the macroscopic current is determined by the geometry of the Bloch bundle. Using a modified WKB approach, we present a rigorous semiclassical analysis for solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with rotational forcing. This yields a rigorous justification for the hydrodynamical system of rotating superfluids. In particular, it is shown that global-in-time semiclassical convergence holds whenever the limiting hydrodynamical system has global smooth solutions and we also discuss the semiclassical dynamics of several physical quantities describing rotating superfluids. The aim of this paper is the accurate numerical study of the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP) equation. In particular, we are concerned with the small dispersion limit of this model, where no comprehensive analytical description exists so far. To this end, we first study a similar highly oscillatory regime for asymptotically small solutions, which can be described via the Davey–Stewartson system. In a second step, we investigate numerically the small dispersion limit of the KP model in the case of large amplitudes. Similarities and differences to the much better studied Korteweg–de Vries situation are discussed as well as the dependence of the limit on the additional transverse coordinate. We consider time-dependent nonlinear Schrödinger equations subject to smooth lattice-periodic potentials plus additional confining potentials, slowly varying on the lattice scale. After an appropriate scaling we study the homogenization limit for vanishing lattice spacing. Assuming well-prepared initial data, the resulting effective dynamics is governed by a homogenized nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an effective mass tensor depending on the initially chosen Bloch eigenvalue. We consider the Cauchy problem for a class of scalar linear dispersive equations with rapidly oscillating initial data. The problem of the high‐frequency asymptotics of such models is reviewed, in particular we highlight the difficulties in crossing caustics when using (time‐dependent) WKB‐methods. Using Wigner measures we present an alternative approach to such asymptotic problems. We first discuss the connection of the naive WKB solutions to transport equations of Liouville type (with mono‐kinetic solutions) in the pre‐breaking regime. Further we show how the Wigner measure approach can be used to analyze high‐frequency limits in the post‐breaking regime, in comparison with the traditional Fourier integral operator method. We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two spatial dimensions subject to a periodic honeycomb lattice potential. Using a multi-scale expansion together with rigorous error estimates, we derive an effective model of nonlinear Dirac type. We present analytical results and numerical simulations for a class of nonlinear dispersive equations in two spatial dimensions. These equations are of (derivative) nonlinear Schrödinger type and have recently been obtained by Dumas et al. in the context of nonlinear optics. In contrast to the usual nonlinear Schrödinger equation, this new model incorporates the additional effects of self-steepening and partial off-axis variations of the group velocity of the laser pulse. We study a class of focusing nonlinear Schrodinger-type equations derived recently by Dumas, Lannes, and Szeftel within the mathematical description of high intensity laser beams. These equations incorporate the possibility of a (partial) off-axis variation of the group velocity of such laser beams through a second order partial differential operator acting in some, but not necessarily all, spatial directions. We investigate the initial value problem for such models and obtain global wellposedness in L2-supercritical situations, even in the case of only partial off-axis dependence. The Ehrenfest dynamics, representing a quantum-classical mean-field type coupling, is a widely used approximation in quantum molecular dynamics. In this paper, we propose a time-splitting method for an Ehrenfest dynamics, in the form of a nonlinearly coupled Schrödinger-Liouville system. We prove that our splitting scheme is stable uniformly with respect to the semiclassical parameter and, moreover, that it preserves a discrete semiclassical limit. Thus one can accurately compute physical observables using time steps induced only by the classical Liouville equation, i.e., independent of the small semiclassical parameter and, moreover, that it preserves a discrete semiclassical limit. We consider equations of nonlinear Schrodinger-type augmented by nonlinear damping terms. We show that nonlinear damping prevents finite time blow-up in several situations, which we describe. We also prove that the presence of a quadratic confinement in all spatial directions drives the solution of our model to zero for large time. We study the interaction of (slowly modulated) high frequency waves for multi-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with gauge invariant power-law nonlinearities and nonlocal perturbations. The model includes the Davey-Stewartson system in its elliptic-elliptic and hyperbolic-elliptic variants. Our analysis reveals a new localization phenomenon for nonlocal perturbations in the high frequency regime and allows us to infer strong instability results on the Cauchy problem in negative order Sobolev spaces, where we prove norm inflation with infinite loss of regularity by a constructive approach. The present work is devoted to the study of dynamical features of Bohmian measures, recently introduced by the authors. We rigorously prove that for sufficiently smooth wave functions the corresponding Bohmian measure furnishes a distributional solution of a nonlinear Vlasov-type equation. Moreover, we study the associated defect measures appearing in the classical limit. In one space dimension, this yields a new connection between mono-kinetic Wigner and Bohmian measures. In addition, we shall study the dynamics of Bohmian measures associated to so-called semi-classical wave packets. For these type of wave functions, we prove local in-measure convergence of a rescaled sequence of Bohmian trajectories towards the classical Hamiltonian flow on phase space. We consider the non-relativistic Hartree model in the gravitational case, i.e. with attractive Coulomb-Newton interaction. For a given mass M > 0, we construct stationary states with non-zero temperature T by minimizing the corresponding free energy functional. It is proved that minimizers exist if and only if the temperature of the system is below a certain threshold T* > 0 (possibly infinite), which itself depends on the specific choice of the entropy functional. We also investigate whether the corresponding minimizers are mixed or pure quantum states and characterize a critical temperature $${T_c \in (0, T*)}$$ above which mixed states appear. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to semi-classical Schrödinger equations with nonlinearities of Hartree type. For a weakly nonlinear scaling, we show the validity of an asymptotic superposition principle for slowly modulated highly oscillatory pulses. The result is based on a high-frequency averaging effect due to the nonlocal nature of the Hartree potential, which inhibits the creation of new resonant waves. Abstract: We consider a class of phase space measures, which naturally arise in the Bohmian interpretation of quantum mechanics. We study the classical limit of these so-called Bohmian measures, in dependence on the scale of oscillations and concentrations of the sequence of wave functions under consideration. The obtained results are consequently compared to those derived via semi-classical Wigner measures. To this end, we shall also give a connection to the theory of Young measures and prove several new results on Wigner measures themselves. We describe and rigorously justify the nonlinear interaction of highly oscillatory waves in nonlinear Schrödinger equations, posed on Euclidean space or on the torus. Our scaling corresponds to a weakly nonlinear regime where the nonlinearity affects the leading order amplitude of the solution, but does not alter the rapid oscillations. We consider initial states which are superpositions of slowly modulated plane waves, and use the framework of Wiener algebras. A detailed analysis of the corresponding nonlinear wave mixing phenomena is given, including a geometric interpretation of the resonance structure for cubic nonlinearities. We consider the three-dimensional semirelativistic Hartree model for fast quantum mechanical particles moving in a self-consistent field. Under appropriate assumptions on the initial density matrix as a (fully) mixed quantum state we prove by using Wigner transformation techniques that its classical limit yields the well known relativistic Vlasov–Poisson system. We consider a generalized DiracFock type evolution equation deduced from nophoton Quantum Electrodynamics, which describes the selfconsistent timeevolution of relativistic electrons, the observable ones as well as those filling up the Dirac sea. This equation has been originally introduced by Dirac in 1934 in a simplified form. Since we work in a Hartree-Fock type approximation, the elements describing the physical state of the electrons are infinite rank projectors. Using the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock formalism, introduced by ChaixIracane (J. Phys. We study the Hartree-Fock approximation of graphene in infinite volume, with instantaneous Coulomb interactions. First we construct its translation-invariant ground state and we recover the well-known fact that, due to the exchange term, the effective Fermi velocity is logarithmically divergent at zero momentum. In a second step we prove the existence of a ground state in the presence of local defects and we discuss some properties of the linear response to an external electric field. A mathematical framework for optimal bilinear control of nonlinear Schrödinger equations of Gross--Pitaevskii type arising in the description of Bose--Einstein condensates is presented. The obtained results generalize earlier efforts found in the literature in several aspects. In particular, the cost induced by the physical workload over the control process is taken into account rather than the often used L²- or H¹-norms for the cost of the control action. Well-posedness of the problem and existence of an optimal control are proved. In addition, the first order optimality system is rigorously derived. We consider the linear Wigner-Fokker-Planck equation subject to confining potentials which are smooth perturbations of the harmonic oscillator potential. For a certain class of perturbations we prove that the equation admits a unique stationary solution in a weighted Sobolev space. A key ingredient of the proof is a new result on the existence of spectral gaps for Fokker-Planck type operators in certain weighted L2-spaces. In addition we show that the steady state corresponds to a positive density matrix operator with unit trace and that the solutions of the time-dependent problem converge towards the steady state with an exponential rate. By extending the Bloch-decomposition-based time-splitting spectral method we introduced earlier, we conduct numerical simulations of the dynamics of nonlinear Schrödinger equations subject to periodic and confining potentials. We consider this system as a two-scale asymptotic problem with different scalings of the nonlinearity. In particular we discuss (nonlinear) mass transfer between different Bloch bands and also present three-dimensional simulations for lattice Bose-Einstein condensates in the superfluid regime. We present a new numerical method for accurate computations of solutions to (linear) one-dimensional Schrödinger equations with periodic potentials. This is a prominent model in solid state physics where we also allow for perturbations by nonperiodic potentials describing external electric fields. Our approach is based on the classical Bloch decomposition method, which allows us to diagonalize the periodic part of the Hamiltonian operator. Hence, the dominant effects from dispersion and periodic lattice potential are computed together, while the nonperiodic potential acts only as a perturbation. Because the split-step communicator error between the periodic and nonperiodic parts is relatively small, the step size can be chosen substantially larger than for the traditional splitting of the dispersion and potential operators. Indeed it is shown by the given examples that our method is unconditionally stable and more efficient than the traditional split-step pseudospectral schemes. Abstract: We present a time-splitting spectral scheme for the Maxwell–Dirac system and similar time-splitting methods for the corresponding asymptotic problems in the semi-classical and the non-relativistic regimes. The scheme for the Maxwell–Dirac system conserves the Lorentz gauge condition is unconditionally stable and highly efficient as our numerical examples show. In particular, we focus in our examples on the creation of positronic modes in the semi-classical regime and on the electron–positron interaction in the non-relativistic regime. Furthermore, in the non-relativistic regime, our numerical method exhibits uniform convergence in the small parameter δ, which is the ratio of the characteristic speed and the speed of light.
