3. Virtual reality in ergonomics by wearable devices: experiences from the automotive sector.

Abstract

Purpose: Preventive ergonomics is essential to protecting the health and safety of workers as is recognizing human variability. The purpose of this paper is to describe a Unity-based application designed for three-dimensional postural analysis and visualizations using motion capture data. Integration with virtual reality (VR) technologies allows the user to be immersed in the simulated working environment without the need for a physical prototype. The proposed application aims to facilitate the application of ergonomic principles in workplace design and assessment for a proactive, participatory and inclusive approach to worker well-being. Design/methodology/approach: The authors developed an application that leverages motion capturing techniques and VR technologies and aims to support the analysts in the ergonomic assessment of physical prototypes as well as future workplaces. An innovative postural prediction module helps the analyst understanding what postures different users are likely to assume in the interaction with the workplace from a single data record. Findings: The functionalities of the proposed application are illustrated on some case studies, presenting how different information is made available and can support workplace analysts and designers in an industrial context. Originality/value: This paper provides insights into the experience and research carried out by an automotive company in the application of wearable sensors and VR to support a proactive and participatory approach to workplace ergonomics. Abstract

This essay aims to reflect about the impact of the recent Italian Law 132/2018 and its effects on the reception policies for asylum seekers in the area of the Metropolitan City of Bologna. Starting to the fact that the system of developed in Bologna is considered a model of excellence, this contribution aims to examine its ability to deal the erosion of rights for asylum seekers provided by recent legislation. Will the integrated territorial system of reception and services react to the restrictions in access and protection imposed by Law 132/2018? The contribution is intended to give back the evolutions of the territorial system, trying to bring out the ambiguities and the founding causes of the criticalities that have become structural. Abstract

The adsorption of an anti-domoic acid single-chain Fv (scFv) antibody fragment onto a range of mesoporous silicate supports was investigated. The scFv antibody fragment was immobilized onto mesoporous silicates of varying surface areas and pore diameters, but the isoelectric points of the antibody fragment and adsorbent material were found to be the most important determinant of protein adsorption.

Abstract

La violenza è l’impensato della politica e al medesimo tempo ciò che ne scuote l’ordine presunto. Numerosi pensatori hanno proposto delle teorie per dare un ruolo alla violenza nelle faccende della politica. Eppure a noi giunge chiara una duplicità: la violenza o è minimizzata per proporre un’immagine edulcorata e bonaria di coloro che la adoperano, oppure viene presa per sinonimo di criminalità. Abbiamo provato, con queste ricerche empiriche e teoriche, a smontare i meccanismi che la filosofia e le scienze sociali ci hanno consegnato, per ripensare il nesso fra politica e violenza nelle società contemporanee.

Abstract

The aim of this contribution is to critically reflect upon multiple spaces and forms of violence. In particular, the focus is on how violence pervasively affects the dimension of migrants’ and asylum seekers’ everyday life. Starting from the evocative idea of a spiral, we have tried to portray the vertiginous movement that characterizes the violence and its expressions. The first part of this contribution is mainly devoted to describing structural violence produced by the bond of normative and cultural violence. In the second part, the reflection on the multiple spaces and forms of violence is focused on the notion of grey zone in order to make explicit the difficulty of clarifying hidden forms of violence and resistance in the dimension of everyday life.

Abstract

Abstract Despite the fundamental importance of E. coli in the manufacture of a wide range of biotechnological and biomedical products, extensive process and/or target optimisation is routinely required in order to achieve functional yields in excess of low mg/l levels. Molecular chaperones and folding catalysts appear to present a panacea for problems of heterologous protein folding in the organism, due largely to their broad substrate range compared with, e.g., protein-specific mutagenesis approaches. Painstaking investigation of chaperone overproduction has, however, met with mixed – and largely unpredictable – results to date. The past 5 years have nevertheless seen an explosion in interest in exploiting the native folding modulators of E. coli, and particularly cocktails thereof, driven largely by the availability of plasmid systems that facilitate simultaneous, non-rational screening of multiple chaperones during recombinant protein expression. As interest in using E. coli to produce recombinant membrane proteins and even glycoproteins grows, approaches to reduce aggregation, delay host cell lysis and optimise expression of difficult-to-express recombinant proteins will become even more critical over the coming years. In this review, we critically evaluate the performance of molecular chaperones and folding catalysts native to E. coli in improving functional production of heterologous proteins in the bacterium and we discuss how they might best be exploited to provide increased amounts of correctly-folded, active protein for biochemical and biophysical studies.

Abstract

Cars’ manufacturing is subject to radical change because of market continuous request of new models developed in few years. Original Equipment Manufacturer and suppliers have to develop more flexible assembly chains, manufacturing services and methods for job planning. And this requires new concepts for process design and for production: the human centered approach to improve manual assembly. In Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, during process design “Digital Manufacturing” and immersive virtual reality have been used in design phase. Holistic ergonomics assessment method as EAWS and ErgoUAS Methods have been used for ergonomic optimization of assembly tasks and for optimal line balancing. Parallel to virtual phase physical assessment on prototypes runs in order to have a physical validation of design/virtual solutions.

Abstract

L’elaborato propone una riflessione rispetto all’atto giuridico del consenso informato quale strumento garante dell’esercizio del diritto alla salute per i migranti. Attraverso una riflessione antropologica rispetto alla natura, alla costruzione e alla logica dei diritti universali, verranno analizzate le normative nazionali, europee ed internazionali a tutela del diritto alla salute per i migranti; l’obiettivo della ricerca è indagare l’eventuale scarto tra normative e politiche garantiste nei confronti della salute migrante e l’esistenza di barriere strutturali che impediscono un pieno esercizio del diritto alla salute. L’ipotesi di ricerca si basa sulla reale capacità performativa del consenso informato, proposto solitamente sia come strumento volto ad assicurare la piena professionalità dell’operatore sanitario nell’informare il paziente circa i rischi e i benefici di un determinato trattamento sanitario, sia come garante del principio di autonomia. La ricerca, attraverso un’analisi quanti-qualitativa, ha interrogato il proprio campo, rappresentato da un reparto di ginecologia ed ostetrica, rispetto alle modalità pratiche di porre in essere la firma nei moduli del consenso informato, con particolare attenzione alle specificità proprie delle pazienti migranti. Attraverso l’osservazione partecipante è stato quindi possibile riflettere su aspetti rilevanti, quali le dinamiche quotidiane che vengono a crearsi tra personale sanitario e pazienti, le caratteristiche e i limiti del servizio di mediazione sanitaria, le azioni pratiche della medicina difensiva. In questo senso il tema del “consenso informato”, indagato facendo interagire discipline quali l’antropologia, la bioetica, la filosofia e la sociologia, si è posto sia come lente di lettura privilegiata per comprendere le dinamiche relazionali ad oggi esistenti tra professionisti sanitari e popolazione migrante, ancora vittima di diseguaglianze strutturali, ma altresì come “innesco potenziale” di nuove modalità di intendere la relazione medico-paziente., The thesis proposes a reflection on informed consent as tool exercising right to health for migrants. The national, European and international protection of the right to health for migrants, will be investigated through an anthropological reflection on the nature, the construction and the logic of universal rights; the aim of the research is to investigate any gap between legislation and policies protecting migrant health and the existence of structural barriers that prevent a full exercise of a fundamental right. The research hypothesis is based on the real performative capacity of informed consent, usually designed as a tool to ensure both full professionalism of the health care in informing the patient about the risks and benefits of a specific medical treatment and the respect of the principle of autonomy. through quantitative and qualitative analysis performed in a department of gynecology and obstetrics, the survey focused on informed consent in action, trying to grasp the specifics of doctor and patient migrant. The daily dynamics between health personnel and patients, the characteristics and limitations of the service of linguistic and cultural mediation, the practical actions of defensive medicine have been investigated by participant observation. In this sense, the theme of "informed consent", investigated interacting disciplines such as anthropology, bioethics, philosophy and sociology, has set both as reading lens privileged to understand the dynamics of relationships between health professionals and migrant population , still victims of structural inequalities, but also as a "potential trigger" for new ways of interpreting patient-physician relationship.
