No cryogenic Reaction Control System (RCS) has ever flown in space. Cryogenic propellants are baselined by HLS and CLPS partners and are the key use case for future ISRU manufactured propellants. A reliable LOX/LCH4 RCS is an enabling technology for human Lunar and Mars exploration. In previous thermal vacuum (<275 F, <10 torr) testing at NASA GRC Plum Brook, the team uncovered anomalous LOX/LCH4 engine ignition phenomena where flame kernels quenched at these ultra cold hardware temperatures, leading to many pulses where the engines would not light. In 2022, the project was able to recreate the no light condition with an upgraded Frost-Mint test stand at JSC. This project implemented test stand improvements and procured propellants and follow on engine components for a hot fire campaign beginning in November 2024 which will attempt to ignite the RCS engine at ultra cold vacuum conditions by modifying the engine mixture ratio. New modeling techniques were implemented to account for past no lights and are an enabling method to make lunar surface go no go predictions based on hardware conditions. This was enabled by significant improvements to the Frost Mint system, which reduced moisture build up and leaks, increased propellant availability, leading to more attempts at thermal vacuum hot-fires.

As lithium-ion battery energy densities continue to rise, managing the heat and pressure generated during failure events has become increasingly critical. Safety systems must effectively relieve pressure without releasing sparks, flames, or particulate matter, requiring robust filtration solutions. The challenge is compounded by the reduced free volume available for gas expansion in high-density designs, which increases the demands on these filters. While significant progress has been made through experimental studies and modeling efforts to understand the behavior of ejecta during battery failures, there remains a pressing need for practical, rule-of-thumb sizing parameters. These parameters would help correlate high-energy waste streams with appropriate filter design, ensuring reliable containment and safety. This talk will explore recent experimental findings in this area and discuss the potential pathways for developing these essential sizing guidelines.

Developed in collaboration with international and commercial partners, Gateway will be humanity’s first crewed space station around the Moon as a vital component of NASA’s Artemis Program for exploration to the Moon, Mars and beyond. As part of it’s focus on developing a sustainable, long term lunar capability, both Xenon based Solar Electric Propulsion System, as well as bi-propellant Reaction Control System of Gateway are designed to be on-orbit refuelable. Through design studies, numerical modeling, hardware development, and substantial testing, the system architecture has undergone significant changes to meet mission requirements and utilize evolving hardware capabilities between concept formulation and the successful completion of its Critical Design Review. This paper presents key lessons learned during this process, highlighting specific design elements and test results that contribute to a robust and adaptable refueling system for the Gateway.

Unburned and partially combusted liquid propellant present in bipropellant thruster plumes can contaminate and damage external spacecraft materials. Microscopic impact features due to high-speed droplet impacts have been observed on space shuttle flight experiments and International Space Station (ISS) returned flight hardware. Analytical results have shown that particle impingement angle greatly affects surface damage, with normal impacts being the most severe and highly oblique impacts being more benign. The effect of thruster plume impingement angle on material degradation has now been further studied following a bipropellant thruster plume test performed at the high-vacuum plume test facility for chemical thrusters at DLR Göttingen, STG-CT. Several spacecraft material samples were exposed to the freely expanding pulsed thruster plume at a range of impingement angles (from 0 to 75 deg). Results of post-test evaluations and potential spaceflight applications are summarized.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) project aims to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) as a thrust mechanism for spacecraft. An initial Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations (DRACO) launch will serve as a test of the technology in Earth’s orbit. Future work may involve the development of an NTP engine and spacecraft design with the capability to transport astronauts from Earth to Mars and back safely, though NTP has other potential uses too.

Nodal or network flow modeling plays an important role in the design and operation of the feed and pressurization system of a liquid rocket engine. Model development and execution time is relatively short for nodal codes in comparison to the Navier-Stokes based CFD codes. Nodal models also allow the inclusion of several components into one model to predict the behavior of a larger system. Unlike CFD models, the nodal models do not need very fine discretization of the flow field because they use empirical correlations to model fluid friction and heat transfer. This paper presents several applications of nodal modeling of liquid propellant feed and pressurization systems using the Generalized Fluid System Simulation Program (GFSSP), a nodal code developed at NASA/ Marshall Space Flight Center. GFSSP discretizes the flow field into nodes which are connected by branches. The mass and energy conservation equations and the equation of state are solved to calculate pressure, temperature, and resident mass at the nodes. The momentum equations are solved at the branches to calculate flow rates. Applications include a) tank pressurization by inert gas as well as autogenous pressurization by gaseous propellant, b) submerged pressurization by helium, c) self-pressurization due to boil-off of cryogenic propellant, d) chilldown of a transfer line of a cryogenic propellant feed system, and e) chilldown and filling of a cryogenic tank. Each of the above-mentioned models was verified and validated by comparing with test data.

The current focus on lunar exploration and future human missions to Mars is driving in-space propulsion system requirements toward higher performance cryogenic systems with long-duration storage and operational capabilities. Not only do these systems offer higher performance than storable propellant options, but they also enable the potential for in-situ propellant production. Future Mars transit systems are envisioned to utilize either high-thrust nuclear thermal propulsion (with liquid hydrogen propellant), or hybrid systems with both cryogenic chemical systems (likely LOX/CH4) for high acceleration maneuvers and nuclear electric systems for long duration high Isp maneuvers. Exploration architectures based on either of these options require the use of high-performance cryogenic propellants with long-duration storage capabilities for both in-space transportation as well as planetary descent and ascent functions. Current efforts focusing on lunar exploration also rely on cryogenic propellants (either LOX/LCH4 or LOX/LH2) for lunar transit and descent/ascent transportation functions. In-space cryogenic propulsion systems pose numerous technology challenges with respect to long-duration propellant storage and usage, including advanced insulation, tank stratification and pressure management, cryogenic refrigeration to reduce propellant loss through boil off, low leakage cryogenic valves, low temperature liquid acquisition, and cryogenic propellant transfer. NASA has invested in technology development efforts, demonstrating individual technologies and systems-level operations. NASA Marshal Space Flight Center has also invested in multiple test facilities and modular test rigs that allow ground demonstration of numerous integrated technologies and systems concepts of operations. Additional investments have been made to mature analytical capabilities and design tools. These capabilities, both test/demonstration & engineering design/analysis, are available to support internal efforts and industrial partners in the development of exploration and science mission systems. With this increased interest, it is critical to understand the current state of in-space cryogenic propulsion technology, determine risks to its successful application to human exploration, and prepare the engineering, test, and evaluation capabilities to support the ambitious plans for future systems. This paper provides a survey of recent developments in in-space cryogenic propulsion and cryogenic propellant management technologies, as well as facilities and engineering/analytical capabilities ready to support current and future exploration efforts.

Long lunar nights limit science lander lifetimes to only two weeks in most global locations unless they carry large batteries or radioisotopes. An orbiting beamed power spacecraft is another option to provide this energy, thus removing the energy storage burden on the lander while still giving it years of science operations.

The solar sail “statite” concept presents a potential means to study interstellar objects (ISOs). A new class of asteroids and comets, ISOs offer a unique scientific opportunity to answer fundamental scientific questions about the origin of solar system volatiles, the compositions of exo-solar systems, and the transfer rates of material between solar systems. Unfortunately, they are also challenging to study due to their high excess energies and the short lead time offered by present detection infrastructure. By using its solar sail to “hover” in place, a statite is able to await the discovery of an ISO and, when called upon, convert the enormous potential energy of its stationary state into the velocity necessary to rendezvous with the targeted comet or asteroid. The investigation completed in Phase I focused on establishing the viability of the proposed mission concept. To do so, optimal trajectories to the two known ISOs were demonstrated and the relationship between statite placement and the resulting trajectory was explored. Post-launch trajectories from the Earth to strategic statite states were also shown to be feasible. Concurrently with these efforts, a thorough review of published ISO population estimates was conducted and preliminary steps towards creating a database of synthetic ISO ephemerides were completed. If renewed for a Phase II, this will be used to characterize the capabilities of the statite concept.

NASA’s Mars Architecture Team (MAT) has recently developed a collection of concepts to assess the capabilities and constraints presented by architectures incorporating large-scale Mars In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) propellant production. The focus of this manuscript is on the concept design of chemical propellant-based transportation systems including a dual role lander/ascent vehicle and an in-space transporter. Mission performance analyses performed during a recent design analysis cycle derived the 300,000 kg propellant production capacity utilized for preliminary concept designs of enabling surface ISRU systems, power systems, fluid handling systems, and their concept of operation, detailed in companion papers.

Additively manufactured refractory alloy-liquid metal heat pipes are being developed and tested for thermal management systems within nuclear propulsion and power applications. This study investigated electron beam (EB) welded joints on a laser powder bed fusion printed niobium alloy (C-103) and the impact of multiple joined heat pipe sections on working fluid flow and container leak-tightness. Results showed that EB welded joints connecting multiple heat pipe sections do not impact working fluid wicking behavior and the printed C-103 material and the EB welds joining the tubular sections created a leak-tight container. Interestingly, CT data showed an order of magnitude greater number and volume of porosity indications in the ground mating surface weld compared to the as-printed mating surface weld. The work concluded that AM is a viable manufacturing process for niobium alloy heat pipes and provided valuable insights for future AM heat pipe research and development.

The current Moon to Mars Architecture defines functional capabilities that are essential to achieving NASA’s specific exploration goals and objectives. The transportation system goals and objectives or functional capabilities do not prescribe a solution, leaving an open tradespace to be explored. NASA is working to identify power and propulsion technologies that enable feasible transportation options for crewed missions to Mars. During NASA’s Strategic Analysis Cycle 2021 (SAC21), nuclear enabled spacecraft concepts were analyzed for moderate duration 850-day Earth-Mars roundtrip mission2. During SAC22, the transportation tradespace was expanded to understand the feasibility of using different propulsion systems for crewed Mars missions using a moderate duration reference mission as a comparison point. This paper explores the mission analysis performed for a conceptual MW-class hybrid Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP)-chemical propulsion system (SEP-Chem) spacecraft optimized for an 850-day crewed Mars mission for the 2039 opportunity.

Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) has been studied extensively for use on a crewed mission to Mars, and NASA and DARPA are partnering in the development and demonstration of an NTP engine as part of the DRACO project. The specific impulse and thrust achieved by an engine in the context of a mission determines the propellant amount required to close the mission and the size of the vehicle required. An NTP engine has a slower start-up/shut-down transient than traditional chemical engines and requires post-firing cooling, and thus the average Isp for a burn is a function of the power ramp-up rate and the duration of the burn. An initial demonstration engine may target a lower Isp than the 900 sec that has been extensively studied by NASA. This paper shows the effect on the mission closure and vehicle sizing of the transient ramp rate performance and of lower than 900 sec specific impulse. Ammonia is considered as an alternate NTP propellant, with mission performance estimated.

Exploring the oceans of icy moons and planets requires a robust robotic probe powered by an energy source that can operate under icy world ocean conditions and be self-contained. We propose a non-fissile, compact, scalable nuclear energy source to electrically power untethered, autonomous probes to melt or bore through icy world crusts. The probe can be used for planetary (i.e. Pluto, lunar (i.e., Europa), or asteroid exploration (i.e. Ceres) where ice caps are encountered. This new approach may yield a variable output fission power source with a higher performance than 238Pu and a non-fissile alternative to a highly enriched uranium (HEU) core. This approach saves uranium enrichment expense, and both HEU and 238Pu security and launch safety costs. The reactor will produce electrical power with thermal waste heat to melt through the ice crust with possible sonic assistance. This NIAC funded proposal and presentation will introduce the hybrid fusion-fission reactor concept applied to the Saturnian moon, Enceladus, explore the potential for and benefits of this new type of nuclear reactor, and discuss applying this new technology.

Advancements in microgravity propellant mass gauging will result in improvements to many areas of propellant management, which influences space vehicle performance and mission assurance. Propellant mass gauging technologies designed to work in an accelerated environment, where the propellant remains settled at one end of the propellant tank, do not always work well in a microgravity environment because the propellant is not necessarily settled. While some microgravity mass gauging technologies exist at various stages of development, most of them have major disadvantages. Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is a sensing technology that is able to reconstruct the liquid distribution inside of a tank, which can then be integrated to obtain mass. While ECT mass gauging will theoretically work during all phases of flight, it had not yet been tested in microgravity. The NASA Kennedy Space Center Launch Services Program, with support from the Flight Opportunities Program, successfully tested an ECT liquid mass gauging system experiment on a parabolic flight aircraft in May 2022. Basics of ECT measurement theory, details of the experiment setup, data processing, ground test results, and the flight test result will be discussed. The results suggest that ECT sensor systems will be useful as a propellant mass gauging technology in both accelerated and microgravity environments.

A Solid-State Thermodynamic Vent System (STVS) is a novel Cryogenic Fluid Management (CFM) technology for spacecraft cryogenic propellant tanks that may reduce boiloff while providing greater control over the propellent condition. By exploiting the vacuum-induced cryocooling potential of cryogen-saturated silica aerogel material, an internal STVS heat exchanger expels some sacrificial cryogenic propellant to the vacuum of space to produce cooling within the storage tank. This cooling is transferred directly to the stored fluid, thereby reducing boiloff and increasing hold times. The primary STVS project objective was to design and build a bespoke STVS heat exchanger that employed aerogel blanket material and perform a ground demonstration of the technology using liquid nitrogen (LN2) as the cryogenic propellant. This demonstration aimed to prove that an STVS can have a positive influence on the tank boiloff, shown through a reduction in mass flow rate out of the system during operation, and exercise control over the tank pressure. Testing proved the effectiveness of the concept by reducing the LN2 boiloff rate and tank pressure by roughly 70% and 77% respectively during a single pump-down cycle, which sacrificed around 1.8 kg of propellant.

Since the initial deployments of probes, orbiters, and rovers on Mars, there have been many ideas and concepts on how to perform an entry, descent, and landing (EDL) process efficiently and safely through the Martian atmosphere to place payloads onto the surface of Mars. Among the missions sent to perform EDL on Mars, only roughly sixty percent of the missions have been successful. The 5 minutes to 20 minutes of communication gap due to long-range telecommunications to Earth, described as seven minutes of terror, add to the complexity of EDL missions to Mars. As the payloads have become larger, the method of EDL has become more complex. To place an automobile-size science rover on the Martian surface requires the use of retrorockets mounted on a Sky Crane during the final subsonic stage of EDL. Larger payloads will require more propellant and more and/or larger retropropulsion engines during the earlier supersonic stage of EDL. The Sky Crane concept may not be scalable for these larger payloads and during supersonic flight; hence, new approaches are sought. A new power technology invented at NASA called Nuclear Thermionic Avalanche Cell (NTAC) may offer an additional solution. Powered by NTAC, the newly invented retropropulsion concept would ingest carbon dioxide gas, heat it up and blast it out as a new feature of the EDL process. NTAC would be reusable as a primary power source for payloads such as excavators, three-dimensional (3D) printers, or mobile equipment for mining, construction, and additive manufacturing tasks. Since NTAC would need to be landed with its host payload or as a standalone power package, assessing its ability to assist in its own EDL seems reasonable. The purpose of this Technical Memorandum (TM) is to examine the performance of NTAC in the context of EDL at Mars for motivating studies for integrating NTAC into future Mars mission architectures.

Thrusters are used to maneuver spacecraft in space. Spacecraft maneuvering and attitude control is achieved by accelerating the high temperature and pressure exhaust gases, which are the result of chemical combustion in the case of chemical engines, through the rocket nozzle. Following the end of the nozzle a plume is created containing combustion gases and high velocity droplets of unburnt propellant that with time can erode the surfaces it strikes. A simulation that can accurately model a thruster’s plume can help us reduce the erosion of components struck by the plume. The creation of this simulation can be broken into several parts, and this paper focuses on finding out what distribution of particles along a plane in the nozzle, where combustion can be assumed to be complete, creates the observed particle distribution in the plume. Findings show that unburnt droplets are mostly concentrated in the center of the nozzle or uniformly dispersed within the nozzle.

The purpose of this handbook is to facilitate a repeatable and robust process that promotes clear and effective interfaces between activities and stakeholders focused on meeting nuclear flight safety requirements for missions utilizing space nuclear systems (SNS), within the context of NASA’s broader nuclear-related activities and interfaces. NPR 8715.26, Nuclear Flight Safety, requires that the NASA project manager “incorporate nuclear flight safety considerations starting with program or project formulation through the point at which the SNS or other radioactive material no longer has the potential to affect Earth’s biosphere.” NASA’s use of SNS inherently involves partnering with other stakeholders to conduct a range of related activities that interface with nuclear flight safety. From a categorical perspective these include: (i) meeting the authorities and licensing requirements for possession and use of nuclear material, as governed by other Federal authorities; (ii) conducting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) activities for nuclear-enabled missions; (iii) meeting Federal nuclear launch authorization requirements; (iv) conducting radiological contingency planning activities, including those associated with international commitments; (v) performing risk communication and public outreach activities; and (vi) ensuring decommissioning and disposal strategies reflect National policies and interests. It is the intent of this handbook to promote an effective interface between nuclear flight safety and these interrelated categorical activities. In addition to activities undertaken with partnering agencies, there are individual nuclear-related activities and programs that have a nexus to nuclear flight safety, and these include: (i) applicable NASA Standing Review Boards; (ii) the US Department of Energy nuclear safety activities conducted in partnership with NASA under Memoranda of Understanding; (iii) the Department of Defense’s Range Safety activities; (iv) NASA’s general involvement in interagency and international dialogues regarding nuclear safety; (v) the NASA-administered Interagency Nuclear Safety Review Board; (vi) NASA’s program and project governance activities and nuclear-specific Technical Discipline Team activities under the Office of the Chief Engineer; and others. It is the intent of this handbook to promote effective leveraging of these additional interrelated organizational activities, as appropriate.

A development program is being conducted at Advanced Thermal Batteries (ATB) to create a low discharge rate, long life, molten salt battery for a NASA Venus surface probe. Battery goals are 60 days continuous operation at +25V +0/-6 volts and -25V +6/-0 Volts under severe environments of 465°C, 92 atm pressure, and corrosive sulfur dioxide in a super critical carbon dioxide atmosphere. Conveniently, molten salt thermal battery electrochemistry starts to operate efficiently at 330°C. However, a major barrier to direct application of existing thermal battery technology is the high self-discharge rate, resulting in lifetimes in only minutes, not days. The best performance to date, which meets the required voltage regulation, has been a lithium silicon (LiSi) alloy anode discharging through all three voltage plateau versus an iron monosulfide (FeS) cathode. In order to perform reproducibly, additional engineering controls within the battery design are required to limit cell–to–cell parasitic discharge mechanisms. Results of these trials have improved the efficiency and manufacturability of the design.

The NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) has applied various forms of metallic additive manufacturing (AM) in liquid rocket engine component design, development, and testing since 2010. These AM techniques reduce hardware cost, shorten fabrication schedules, increase reliability by reducing the number of joints, and improve hardware performance by allowing unconventional design. The RAMFIRE project, funded under Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) Game Changing Development (GCD) Program, has furthered the use of novel AM liquid rocket nozzles in collaboration with Elementum 3D. The project advanced novel large-scale AM aluminum material technology for significant weight savings in rocket engines and launch vehicles. Previously, aluminum alloys were difficult to weld and print using additive manufacturing. Elementum 3D’s patented Aluminum 6061-RAM2 alloy allows for aluminum alloys to be printed using various AM techniques and at various scales. The alloy can be leveraged for welding wire, showing drastic improvements in aluminum weldability. The RAMFIRE project focuses on five key areas: 1) Laser Powder Directed Energy Deposition (LP-DED) AL6061-RAM2 feedstock specification and verification, 2) LP-DED process development and validation, 3) LP-DED printed AL6061-RAM2 microstructural and mechanical property characterization, 4) Hot-fire test a 7k-lbf thrust class regeneratively cooled nozzle, 5) Print large scale regeneratively cooled nozzle. Hot-fire testing demonstrates potential of advanced space technologies to NASA and potential users by providing the relevant environments to advance TRL levels to the 5/6 range.

NASA has been developing free-piston Stirling-cycle power convertors over the past 22 years for use in nuclear power systems that would provide electricity for space science missions to dark, dusty, or distant destinations where solar power is not practical. These nuclear power systems would generate heat from either the radioactive decay of isotopes or fission nuclear reactors. That heat would be converted to usable electricity using highly efficient Stirling convertors for a wide range of power needs needing 10s of watts to 50 kWe. NASA’s Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) Program is maturing advanced thermoelectric and dynamic conversion technologies that would increase the system efficiency beyond what is currently possible using heritage systems to enable a larger number of robotic missions or higher power missions to solar system bodies of interest. The Dynamic Radioisotope Power Systems (DRPS) Project has matured prototype Stirling convertors to sufficiently increase the technology readiness level for infusion into flight development. Flexure and gas-bearing free-piston Stirling convertors were developed under contract by commercial partners and delivered to enable government evaluation. Gas-bearing designs have met performance and robustness requirements and were selected for flight development. This paper provides the status of SRSC test campaign and maturity level.

During a laser-induced fluorescence test of a 12.5-kW magnetically-shielded Hall thruster, ion characteristics in the discharge channel and near the poles were measured as the background pressure and electrical configuration were varied. The acceleration zone of the thruster moved upstream by 2% and 10% of the channel length when the background pressure was raised to 1.8 times and 7 times the lowest achievable pressure, respectively. Examination of the characteristics of the ions near the pole covers suggested that as the background pressure decreased the pole covers may be experiencing more erosion. When operating at a discharge voltage of 300 V, the acceleration zone was observed to be at the same location for all electrical configurations. When operating at a discharge voltage of 600V, the acceleration zone was observed to move 3% of the channel length upstream when the thruster body was floated instead of tied to the cathode or grounded to the facility. Characteristics of the ions bombarding the pole covers did not vary across the tested electrical configurations. This observation combined with thruster body voltage measurements suggested that varying the electrical configuration only affected the thruster body sheath voltage and did not affect the plasma potential beyond the sheath.

Upper stage rocket engines are optimized for operation at the edge of space. Ground testing often requires simulation of high-altitude environments to prevent damage from off-design operation. Passive supersonic diffusers are an effective means of establishing the partial vacuum needed around the nozzle exit. The low cost of diffusers relative to active vacuum sources (ejectors, pumps, etc.) provides a perpetual incentive to improve their performance and expand the envelope of passively testable engines. Second-throat diffusers have been the de facto standard for rocket testing since the 1950s, and numerous studies have focused on parametric optimization of the topology. Yet, even the best second-throat designs may require more driving pressure than an upper stage engine can provide. To overcome conventional limits, engineers at NASA’s Stennis Space Center (SSC) adapted an obscure cold-flow diffuser topology to the extremes of immersion in supersonic combustion products. Aerodynamic experimentation was conducted at SSC’s E-3 test stand to quantify the performance of prototypical hot-fire spike diffuser hardware and enable direct comparison to prior states of the art. A LOX/GH2 thruster was contoured to approximate the regeneratively-cooled nozzle of an upper-stage engine and fired into 28 downstream diffuser configurations: 16 second-throat, 2 centerbody, and 10 spike. Temperature and pressure were recorded along the test article walls for a range of chamber pressures spanning 3.5 - 5.0 MPa. The second-throat configurations with the lowest start and unstart pressure ratios were shown to outperform equivalent systems in literature and taken as baselines for evaluation of advanced diffuser performance. Compared to these exemplars, centerbody diffusers decreased start pressure ratio by 11% but increased unstart pressure ratio by 15%. Spike diffusers reduced start and unstart pressure ratios by 24% and 9%, respectively.

The goal of this project is to demonstrate reliable ignition of liquid oxygen-liquid methane at thermal vacuum conditions using a coil-on-plug (COP) sparking exciter. Testing will be performed using EP’s Frost-Mint cryogenic propellant test stand, using an engine updated based on data collected from previous engine testing at Plum Brook Station, to determine conditions under which the cryogenic propellants will consistently and reliably ignite. In FY22 the project successfully completed the following milestones. The cryogenic test stand Frost-Mint was upgraded to include an integrated vacuum tube and liquid nitrogen cooling system enabling cold vacuum ignition testing. The Integrated GN2/LN2 Ultra-Low-temperature Enclosure (IGLUE), a custom-built close-coupled heater exchanger shroud was designed, fabricated, tested and integrated into the test stand. The vacuum tube and IGLUE enabled the thruster body and propellants to be conditioned to temperatures and pressures desired. This work recreated the no-light conditions experienced during vehicle-level thermal vacuum testing and obtained thruster performance data and ignition imagery.

This paper presents a status update on the low leakage cryogenic test valves currently under development at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. These valves consist of a 3-inch isolation valve, a 3-inch relief valve, and an 8-inch pre-valve. Each of these valves contain a self-aligning seat and poppet design to significantly reduce the quantity of propellant flowing past the seat when the valve is in its closed state (internal leakage). This self-aligning design utilizes a metallic poppet head with five degrees of freedom and is intended to allow a valve to be more tolerant of the imperfect contacts and misalignments that are commonly found between sealing surfaces. This paper covers the test articles, facilities, objectives, and preliminary results.

NASA has been focused on developing technology that would allow the production of cryogenic propellants on the Lunar and Martian surfaces. Utilizing Lunar/Martian resources, the produced gaseous propellants must first be liquefied and stored prior to use on the Moon or Mars ascent vehicle. Liquefaction of cryogenic propellant is a necessary technical development to enable NASA’s future spaceflight goals. This paper presents an overview of the effect of spacecraft propellant system parameters on cryogenic propellant liquefaction rates. The propellant system was assumed to be a receiver of a gas from an In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) harvester and condensed the gas by cooling the tank walls. First, the general thermodynamic principles pertinent to condensation are summarized, followed by an overview of the model which performed the analysis, including a summary of the Fortran implementation. Comparisons between the model results and test data are discussed, as well as sensitivity of the condensation rate to various parameters.

Solar arrays in space are subjected to a daunting set of environmental hazards, including extreme temperature cycles, particulate and ultraviolet radiation in space, micrometeoroid damage, and exposure to a flux of atomic oxygen in low-Earth orbit. Over the years since the first solar cells were sent into space on Vanguard 1 in 1958, space solar array technology has advanced to develop photovoltaic materials, cells, and arrays resistant to these degradation mechanisms. This chapter highlights approaches to solar array design for near-Sun missions including thermal management at the systems level, to optimize efficiency at elevated temperature, or the use of novel device design to reduce the incident solar energy to limit operating temperature. Several of these have been successfully demonstrated to enable solar-powered spacecraft to explore the near-Sun planets such as Mercury and Venus as well as the Sun itself.

High-pressure gaseous helium (GHe) plays a critical role in spacecraft propulsion due to its near exclusive use for pressurization of propellant tanks. Several different designs for helium compressor technologies have been developed for use on Earth; however, significant design changes are required to meet the power, thermal/heat dissipation, vacuum, vibration/shock, size, mass, and efficiency requirements needed for space and launch environments. Currently, no capability exists for mass efficient on-orbit GHe (or xenon) transfer, nor has it ever been attempted. This effort proposed several challenging requirements for the vendor to develop a one-of-a-kind pneumatic compressor prototype. In order to develop a compressor prototype at a TRL 4, a partnership with Air Squared, Inc. was established. This CIF project concluded with the receipt of a prototype along with a proposed design for a flight unit; however, it will not be built due to funding limitations. The vendor had moderate success with initial testing of the prototype at lower pressures (with shimming configured for low pressure). There were delays with testing since the unit was built for higher pressures and the low pressure shimming was challenging to implement. It was found that operation of the compressor at lower pressures caused increased friction on the motor shaft which resulted in the unit drawing more power (current). This was initially thought to be a motor or controller defect. Subsequent high pressure testing at KSC showed that the friction was reduced for the optimal design point (with a high pressure shimming configuration) and the motor (and controller) performed nominally. Following the vendor testing, the unit was tuned/shimmed for a nominal inlet pressure and shipped to KSC for high pressure testing using the custom-designed setup in the Vehicle Assembly Building. The unit performed well, showing the capability to achieve over higher pressure of compression. The pressure differential could likely increase, however, the maximum output of the power supply used for testing was reached, limiting the compressor motor’s capability. Following the GN2 testing, the test setup was converted to GHe with at high pressure. It was shown that although the unit was unable to achieve similar high pressure differentials due to reverse leakage of the GHe through the scroll tip seals, it did achieve the desired GHe compression. This may still be useful for some applications, however, for the purpose of on-orbit GHe transfer, the single stage design would need to be changed to include multiple stages to achieve the compression goals initially proposed by the project.

Globalization, powered by digitization, is increasing technology growth and knowledge transfer rates to levels not seen in the previous 3500 years, obscuring absolute truth and accelerating rates of innovation and production. Competing,or remaining competitive, in this global marketplace requires a learning organization adopt a method of capture, retention, and reuse for demonstrated tacit knowledge to accelerate the development of increasingly complex systems of high quality at a reasonable cost. The architectural theory of Patterns and Pattern Language is a validated methodology for mining tacit domain knowledge from a proven system. This work applies architectural theory to a multi-year development experiment and captures exposed knowledgeas a design patternin a model based systems engineering tool, demonstrating applicability ofdigital engineering initiativesin thedescription and reuse of expert design knowledge.By creating and archiving model based expressions of expert knowledge,a learning organization canimprovepractical decision making and avoid uninformed concept phase decision making

A variably premixed rotating detonation engine using gaseous hydrogen and air reactants is introduced to enable investigation of key cycle processes while varying the homogeneity of the reactant inlet conditions. Two chamber configurations are investigated, the first with reactants filling the entire span of a straight annular channel and the second with a slightly larger channel and a backward-facing step. The first configuration permits both premixed and non-premixed fuel injection, enabling mixing quality modulation. The second configuration is operated only at fully premixed conditions. Operating modes and detonation wave speeds are characterized using exhaust-plume imaging, while the chamber heat release field is captured by transverse imaging through a transparent outer body. Tests using the first configuration were characterized by unstable counterpropagating modes with low detonation wave speeds regardless of the state of premixing, while the second configuration rendered single-wave behavior with wave speeds up to 86% of the Chapman–Jouguet velocity. Comparisons with a simple computational fluid dynamics model of the second configuration indicate that reactant preheating significantly influences the detonation wave topology, highlighting the potential utility of the test platform for isolating key physics associated with the effects of reactant premixing, preheating, and chamber geometry on rotating detonation engine operation.

NASA recently completed a mission concept study to evaluate the feasibility and propulsion technology development requirements for reduced travel duration crewed missions to Mars. A high-level goal of the study was to minimize the health impact on the crew caused by the space environment. This was implemented in the study by limiting the crew to a total of approximately-two years of in-space operations and travel time. For the initial mission, the crew would stay about 30 days on the Martian surface. The propulsive demands of such a mission are immense, and the study identified two advanced propulsion options with the potential to meet the mission requirements—both options rely on nuclear fission to provide efficient propulsive energy. One propulsion option was a nuclear electric propulsion (NEP)/Chem Hybrid, with a reactor and energy conversion system powering xenon propellant ion thrusters to provide an efficient, but lower-thrust, push for most of the mission duration. This concept also relied on a liquid oxygen/liquid methane (LO2/LCH4) chemical propulsion stage to provide high thrust for maneuvers while near the Earth and Mars. The second propulsion option was nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP), in which the reactor heats liquid hydrogen (LH2) propellant to expand through a nozzle for thrust at about twice the efficiency of the best chemical propulsion systems. Both vehicle concepts rely on storing large amounts of cryogenic propellant (either LO2/LCH4 or LH2) for multiple years in space without loss, far exceeding state-of-the-art capability. To enable this new capability, the team assumed the use of several advanced cryogenic fluid management (CFM) technologies and analyzed the integrated system performance. This included considering the vehicle-level effects of the size, mass, and power requirements of these CFM elements. Further, the team evaluated the development required to enable such a mission in the mid-2030 s and determined that it was feasible. The paper elaborates on the assumed CFM technologies, provides key analysis results, and illustrates the feasibility of technology development for the proposed solutions to the CFM challenges for each propulsion concept.

Titan is unique in the outer solar system in that it is the only moon with a thick atmosphere, and the only body in the solar system outside the Earth with liquid seas on its surface. The Titanian oceans, however, are seas of liquid hydrocarbons, and the rocks on the surface are solid water ice. Like other icy Moons of the outer solar system, beneath the ice crust, Titan also has a subsurface ocean. Rodriguez et al. refer to it as the “world with two oceans”, an organic-rich body with interior-surface-atmosphere interactions that are comparable in complexity to the Earth. [1] Titan is scientifically fascinating in many ways [2], [3], [4]. The Compass Team will emphasize just one here: Titan is a high priority target for astrobiology [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]. It is a world with a surface and atmosphere rich in the complex organic compounds known as tholins. A detailed understanding of the nature of these complex compounds will require an analysis using a full laboratory on Earth. Because of its value to understanding the organic compounds of the outer solar system which may be the primordial building-blocks of life, return of samples from Titan to laboratories on Earth will be the primary goal of this mission. While this would give unprecedented science return, returning even a small sample from Titan using conventional technology would be tremendously difficult. Saturn is almost a billion miles from the Earth, about thirteen times farther than Mars. A return mission to Saturn requires such a large total-mission ∆V that, with conventional technology, the mass ratios required are prohibitive. Such a sample return would truly be “mission incredible.” But to date, a sample return mission from so distant a target has been assumed to be, not merely incredible, but mission impossible. The Compass Team has proposed [2] [12] that by manufacturing the propellant for the return to Earth using the resources available on Titan, such a mission becomes possible. The task of this report is to show that it is reasonable with credible space technology.

Compass Team was tasked by the RPS Project at the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to create an independent concept design for a spacecraft (S/C) utilizing low power radioisotope power. A list of candidate missions enabled by milliwatt class radioisotope power was evaluated and thus resulted in the selection of a Mars polar region seismology network of four hard landers. A science rational and science operations plan was developed to establish mission design requirements and S/C subsystem concept designs described herein.

Continuous power at the kilowatt level will be imperative for future lunar users including crew infrastructure, future science, and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). The Compass Team explored both 10 kilowatt electric (kWe) and 40 kWe concepts, assuming planned lander and rover capabilities. Both concepts found that a crew pressurized rover chassis, repurposed for deploying reactor power components, could place a fission surface power system (FSPS) at least one kilometer from users. While the 10 kWe fission power system (FPS) could be deployed as a single unit, the 40 kWe system was too large and had to be deployed in multiple trips with the same rover. Key technologies and design approaches included a high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU), yttrium hydride (YH) moderated heat pipe reactor, Stirling convertors, deployable radiators based on International Space Station (ISS) designs, and power conversion/transmission at ±2800 volts of direct current (VDC).

Propellants mass gauging technologies designed to work in an accelerated environment, where the propellant remains settled at one end of the propellant tank, do not work well in a microgravity environment because the propellant is not necessarily settled. While some microgravity mass gauging technologies exist at various TRLs, most of them have major disadvantages. Improvements in microgravity propellant mass gauging will result in improvements to many areas of propellant management, which influences performance and mission assurance. Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) is a sensing technology that has been used in the oil/gas industry for decades to measure multi-phase flow rate in pipes. ECT, when installed in a tank, is able to reconstruct the liquid distribution inside of the tank, which can then be integrated to obtain mass. ECT mass gauging recently achieved high accuracy in laboratory testing on the ground, and while ECT mass gauging will theoretically work during all phases of flight, it had not yet been tested in microgravity. The NASA KSC Launch Services Program, with support from the Flight Opportunities Program, successfully flew an ECT tank liquid mass gauging system experiment on a Zero-G parabolic flight aircraft. The experiment hardware was rented from a company; NASA LSP did no technology development work for this project. This STRIVES entry is for the entire raw data set, which consists of approximately 25GB of csv files of capacitance and motion data from the ground and flight tests of the experiment. The data set will be available on the NASA LSP Electronic Slosh Data Catalog (ESDC), and the public may request the data set from the authors (POC: Jed Storey, jedediah.m.nasa.gov).

The Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) Program tasked the Compass Team to evaluate use of Dynamic Radioisotope Power Systems (DRPS) for lunar science rovers. The object was to identify their advantages and challenges as well as to influence the technology developments with flight-type requirements. This was easily done by using the promising Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) solar- powered rover mission as a platform to ‘swap in’ a DRPS. The ‘pickup truck bed’ approach allowed both simplified installation and operation of the DRPS while keeping the forward lunar surface ‘blocked’ from the DRPS waste heat which could sublimate the icy surface. It was found that with the Stirling DRPS option the mass is within the planned VIPER lander capability and is very close to VIPER mass and size (the DRPS replaces large battery pack/solar arrays). The Stirling DRPS option produced ~300 Watts electrical (We) using six general purpose heat source (GPHS) bricks and eight Stirling convertors. Replacing the solar/battery power with radioisotope power allows a continuous presence (instead of 6 hours) in a permanently shadowed region (PSR) and over 18 months of operations with minimal science impact (rearward surface heating). It was also found that use of a dynamic system (instead of a thermoelectric system) reduces the heat impact on the science environment two-to-three times. The DRPS, along with a relay link (like Gateway), can provide continuous access to PSRs. The system was also found to be capable of roving for 8 hours per day with a range of over 500 km in 18 months. Preliminary cost estimates fit into a Class D mission but only assuming VIPER heritage and launch, lander, operations, nuclear specific costs [National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), fueling, transport, Launch Services Program (LSP), etc.] and DRPS are not included.

Integrated Reaction Control Systems (IRCS) are considered an enabling technology for future human exploration of the solar system. An IRCS uses the same fuel and oxidizer as the main propulsion system, allowing for increased performance and simplified cryogenic fluid management operations. The IRCS team at Marshall Spaceflight Center is currently evaluating an IRCS system that uses a combination of electric pumps and pressure-regulation devices to provide a constant flow of conditioned propellant to a thruster bank during operation. In contrast to accumulator and gasifier designs, the recirculation loop design is less massive and can provide large, sustained flowrates to the thruster inlet. In the summer 2021 test series presented herein, the feasibility of this concept was evaluated using liquid nitrogen as a simulant for liquid oxygen. The goals of this test series were to demonstrate the ability of the pump and pressure regulator to maintain adequate thruster inlet conditions during transient operation, and to demonstrate the ability for the system to operate in an “idle mode” that maintains system chill between activations. During test operations, the back-pressure regulator responded more slowly than the opening/closing of valves in the thruster simulant, but it was still able to attenuate the pressure fluctuation at the pump discharge and ensure a stable flowrate through the pump. Similarly, the pump was able to be run far below its nominal operating point and successfully flow sufficient fluid to maintain chill conditions.

Space Nuclear Systems (SNS) technology development offers a wide range of capabilities to support NASA’s current and future missions. Executive Order (EO) 13972, “Promoting Small Modular Reactors for National Defense and Space Exploration” [1], issued 5 January 2021, directs NASA to define requirements for NASA utilization of nuclear energy systems for human and robotic exploration missions through 2040 and analyze the costs and benefits of such requirements.” Although it is premature to define requirements and cost for future exploration missions that have not yet been formulated, this report describes planned objectives and missions by 2040 that are enabled or enhanced by nuclear systems while taking into account a number of unique considerations for nuclear energy in the space environment. Nuclear energy systems are enabling for space missions and critical capabilities where conventional forms of energy production are impractical or impossible due to mass constraints, mission duration, or distance from the Sun. Space nuclear technologies available or in development for use by 2040 utilize radioisotope decay or nuclear fission and fall into three categories: heat, power, and propulsion. Current applications utilize radioisotope power systems that provide consistent and reliable performance in the sub-kilowatt power range. More advanced SNS can enable new mission objectives where high energy density solutions are critical, or where access to solar solutions is prohibitive. Higher power radioisotope and fission systems are under development within NASA for a wide variety of human exploration and science mission applications. Planned missions designed to use radioisotope systems include Dragonfly, a rotorcraft that will explore the surface of Titan, and Persephone, a mission concept for a Pluto orbiter. Nuclear fission systems have the key advantage of providing significantly higher power, lower mass solutions from tens to even thousands of kilowatts. Fission power is enabling to a sustained human presence on the Moon and developing a robust lunar economy. Fission propulsion is enabling for missions within and beyond cis-lunar space. This report examines NASA-envisioned mission applications and associated performance needs for SNS over the next twenty years leading to 2040 along with the unique technical considerations posed by space nuclear technology development. This includes engineering and operational logistics for ground handling, thermal management, survival of the space environment, operational safety, power requirements, and service longevity. Safety to the public, the NASA work force, and agency assets remains a top priority for NASA and particular attention is given to this aspect in the design, hardware assembly, ground operation, launch, and mission operation of an SNS. NASA relies on the Department of Energy as nuclear authority and its legacy of rigorous safety procedures as standards for ground development, test, transportation, and launch site operation. The principal concern is preventing unintended radiological release to the public or environment. Radioisotope system experience has established processes, including ground operation, transportation, and launch, that are considered directly applicable to emerging fission systems; however, fission systems have unique design needs that impact the safety and performance requirements. High efficiency power conversion from both fission and radioisotope systems requires high operating temperatures necessitating both passive and active thermal management to maintain safe and nominal operating conditions. Effective cooling and waste heat rejection have special considerations for space applications, whether in zero-g or reduced gravity. Fluid and heat transfer within the reactor system is not anticipated to be impacted by reduced or zero-g environments. Cryogenic working fluids and propellant supplies utilized in some space nuclear applications will need low mass, high capacity cryocoolers to meet the long-term storage and near zero-boiloff needs. Integrated, high power density SNS capable of being packaged in a single vehicle is a key consideration for NASA. Due to concerns for complexity and reliability, in space reactor assembly and reactor refueling are not current design considerations. Expanding into a new era for space exploration depends on mass-efficient, high-energy solutions to power deep-space vehicles, operate in harsh environments, and increase mission flexibility. NASA nuclear technology investments are targeting power for surface operations and propulsion for fast-transit, deep-space missions, all with the ability to reliably operate without the need for repair or refueling. NASA’s goals, enabled by nuclear technologies, provide for exciting advances in scientific objectives and human exploration, ushering in a new space age that enables a human presence on bodies beyond our Earth.

This work provides a complete review of controller strategies for free-piston Stirling convertors (FPSCs) and design recommendations for future controller development efforts. First, basic operating principles for the control of FPSCs and design variables for the FPSC controllers are described. Next, past controller approaches are reviewed and categorized based on the design variables. State-of-the-art controllers are also summarized by their key features, which are then hypothetically extended to flight designs to compare their critical metrics such as the estimated size, weight, and power with cost (SWaP-C) and reliability. Finally, design recommendations are suggested to improve the state-of-the-art controllers for future flight development projects.

Reactant mixing and combustion are investigated in an optically accessible, self-excited linear detonation combustor. The mixing field is captured using 100 kHz planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) imaging of acetone as a tracer in the fuel supply, while 100 kHz chemiluminescence imaging of excited-state hydroxyl (OH*) radicals simultaneously resolves the evolution of the detonation wave. Time sequences are acquired over multiple detonation cycles in each test, with acetone-PLIF images collected along multiple orthogonal planes to reveal the complex three-dimensional topography of the fuel distribution. The instantaneous and phase averaged acetone-PLIF images enable measurement of key fuel injection characteristics, such as the injector recovery time, fuel jet velocity, and refill height for a range of operating conditions. Instantaneous and phase-averaged measurements of acetone-PLIF with the time-coincident OH* chemiluminescence images also reveal a number key features, such as fuel stratification and weak detonation in the injector near field, incomplete combustion and deflagration behind the detonation wave, vitiation and deflagration of reactants ahead of the detonation wave, and fuel and oxidizer recovery time mismatch leading to combustion inefficiency. These measurements significantly enhance the ability to obtain detailed information on the intracycle and intercycle spatiotemporal evolution of the reactant refill process and its coupled effects on the detonation wave structure and propagation.

NASA is developing dynamic power conversion technologies for future robotic space science and exploration missions powered by Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS). The Dynamic Radioisotope Power Systems (DRPS) Project is working to mature numerous dynamic power convertors and controllers for potential infusion into future flight generators. Maturation of power conversion technologies is being managed by the RPS Program and executed by the DRPS Project and Thermal Energy Conversion Branch located at NASA’s Glenn Research Center (GRC). Convertor maturation includes multiple convertor technology development contracts to deliver new prototypes and continued testing of relevant legacy convertors, commissioned during past projects. The convertor technology development contracts include two Stirling contractor teams and one Brayton team. All contracts have now completed prototype fabrication and testing planned during Phase 2. Government assessment of the new prototypes includes verification of performance in relevant environments and validation of the design with a focus on robustness.
