Abstract

Numerical solutions of supersonic viscous flows are studied by applying an implicit time-dependent scheme to the thin-layer Navier-Stokes (TLNS) equations. The alternating direction implicit (ADI) scheme is first formulated to solve transonic viscous axisymmetric flows in two dimensions. The results indicate that the ADI scheme is not efficient enough for supersonic viscous calculations. A spatial discretization scheme using upwind flux-vector split differencing in the streamwise direction and central differencing in the cross-stream direction is chosen. Three approximate factorization schemes and one fully implicit direct solver are considered. Of them, the diagonally dominant ADI(DDADI) and the parabolized ADI are found to be much faster than the standard ADI procedure. These numerical algorithms are applied to solve supersonic flows through conical and high expansion ratio contoured nozzles for different Reynolds numbers, wall temperatures, and back pressures. Proper downstream boundary conditions for the subsonic portion of the outflow are shown to allow variations of the boundary layer thickness at the exit plane and recirculating separated flows for sufficiently high back pressure. Parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) procedures are also studied. Swirling viscous flows in transonic and supersonic propulsive nozzles have been investigated numerically. Abstract

We have developed a broadband VLBI (very long baseline interferometry) system inspired by the concept of the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS). The new broadband VLBI system was implemented in the Kashima 34 m antenna and in two transportable stations utilizing 2.4 m diameter antennas. The transportable stations have been developed as a tool for intercontinental frequency comparison but are equally useful for geodesy. To enable practical use of such small VLBI stations in intercontinental VLBI, we have developed the procedure of node-hub style VLBI: In joint observation with a large, high sensitivity ‘hub’ antenna, the closure delay relation provides a virtual delay observable between ‘node’ stations. This overcomes the limited sensitivity of the small diameter node antennas, while error sources associated with large diameter antennas, such as gravitational deformation and delay changes in necessarily long signal cables, are eliminated. We show that this scheme does not result in an increased sensitivity to radio source structure if one side of the baseline triangle is kept short. We have performed VLBI experiments utilizing this approach over both short range and intercontinental distance. This article describes the system components, signal processing procedure, experiment, and results in terms of baseline repeatability. Our measurements reveal signatures of structure effects in the correlation amplitude of several of the observed radio sources. We present a model of the frequency-dependent source size for 1928+738 derived from correlation amplitude data observed in four frequency bands.

Abstract

This paper evaluates a methodology to integrate surface soil moisture retrievals from SMOS and AMSR-E into a single, consistent dataset retrieved by the Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM). In a first step, the SMOS LPRM soil moisture retrievals were used as the baseline for optimizing the internal parameterization (i.e. surface roughness and single scattering albedo) of the AMSR-E LPRM retrievals. Secondly, to overcome the uniqueness of these datasets a linear scaling approach was applied resulting in a consistent soil moisture dataset. The new parameter set from the first step is similar for the two (low) frequencies of AMSR-E (i.e. C- and X-band) further improving their inter-comparability for both soil moisture and vegetation optical depth. Soil moisture retrievals from these AMSR-E frequencies were globally merged based on the availability of brightness temperatures that are free from RFI contamination (resulting in AMSR-E LPRMN). This new product was evaluated against both the SMOS LPRM product in the overlapping period (July 2010 to October 2011), as well as the standard, publicly available AMSR-E LPRM dataset (AMSR-E LPRMV3) for an almost 9 year period (January 2003 to October 2011). For the overlapping period, the AMSR-E and SMOS LPRM products show high temporal correlation coefficients (0.60 < R < 0.90) and low root mean square errors (rmse < 0.04 m3 m− 3) for NDVI values up to 0.60. Their agreement tends to drop over the well-known challenging areas such as the arctic region and tropical rainforest. A detailed evaluation over in situ sites from 5 in situ networks worldwide showed that AMSR-E LPRMN often outperforms SMOS LPRM in sparsely vegetated areas, with generally higher correlation coefficients in areas with NDVI < 0.3, and in general a lower unbiased rmse (ubrmse). In line with theoretical expectations, SMOS LPRM outperforms the AMSR-E LPRM product over the more densely vegetated areas. The newly developed AMSR-E LPRMN product was also compared against AMSR-E LPRMV3, revealing a significant increase (from 0.48 to 0.55) in temporal correlation coefficient over 16 in situ networks. This finding was confirmed through a large scale (50°N–50°S) precipitation based verification technique, the so-called Rvalue, which shows a superior performance of the newly developed AMSR-E LPRMN product. Additionally, the linear scaling of AMSR-E LPRMN to the SMOS LPRM leads to further reducing the ubrmse from 0.09 to 0.06 m3 m− 3 and the average bias from 0.14 to 0.00 m3 m− 3 over these stations. The AMSR-E LPRMN was furthermore compared against the top layer of two re-analysis models (i.e. from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications-Land and ERA-Interim/Land models) generally demonstrating increased correlation coefficients and reduced ubrmse with the exception of the challenging areas. As a result, this study shows the significant potential of SMOS LPRM to be a successful integrator to build a long term soil moisture record based on multiple passive microwave sensors.

Abstract

CABI:20163028727; International audience; A recent study by Van der Schalie et al. (2015) showed good results for applying the Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM) on SMOS observations over southeast Australia and optimizing and evaluating the retrieved soil moisture (θ in m3 m−3) against ground measurements from the OzNet sites. In this study, the LPRM parameterization is globally updated for SMOS against modelled θ from MERRA-Land (MERRA) and ERA-Interim/Land (ERA) over the period of July 2010–December 2010, mainly focusing on two parameters: the single scattering albedo (ω) and the roughness (h). The Pearson's coefficient of correlation (r) increased rapidly when increasing the ω up to 0.12 and reached a steady state from thereon, no significant spatial pattern was found in the estimation of the single scattering albedo, which could be an artifact of the used parameter estimation procedure, and a single value of 0.12 was therefore used globally. The h was defined as a function of θ and varied slightly for the different angle bins, with maximum values of 1.1–1.3 as the angle changes from 42.5° to 57.5°.This resulted in an average r of 0.51 and 0.47, with a bias (m3 m−3) of −0.02 and −0.01 and an unbiased root mean square error (ubrmse in m3 m−3) of 0.054 and 0.056 against MERRA (ascending and descending). For ERA this resulted in an r of 0.61 and 0.53, with a bias of −0.03 and an ubrmse 0.055 and 0.059. The resulting parameterization was then used to run LPRM on SMOS observations over the period of July 2010–December 2013 and evaluated against SMOS Level 3 (L3) θ and available in situ measurements from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN). The comparison with L3 shows that the LPRM θ retrievals are very similar, with for the ascending set very high r of over 0.9 in large parts of the globe, with an overall average of 0.85 and the descending set performing less with an average of 0.74, mainly due to the negative r over the Sahara. The mean bias is 0.03, with an ubrmse of 0.038 and 0.044. In this study there are three major areas where the LPRM retrievals do not perform well: very dry sandy areas, densely forested areas and over high latitudes, which are all known limitations of LPRM. The comparison against in situ measurement from the ISMN give very similar results, with average r for LPRM of 0.65 and 0.61 (0.64 and 0.59 for L3) for the ascending and descending sets, while having a comparable bias and ubrmse over the different networks. This shows that LPRM used on SMOS observations produce θ retrievals with a similar quality as the SMOS L3 product.

Abstract

In this study, the authors first show that it is difficult to reconstruct the vertical structure of vortices using only surface observations. In particular, they show that the recent surface quasigeostrophy (SQG) and interior and surface quasigeostrophy (ISQG) methods systematically lead to surface-intensified vortices, and those subsurface-intensified vortices are thus not correctly modeled. The authors then investigate the possibility of distinguishing between surface- and subsurface-intensified eddies from surface data only, using the sea surface height and the sea surface temperature available from satellite observations. A simple index, based on the ratio of the sea surface temperature anomaly and the sea level anomaly, is proposed. While the index is expected to give perfect results for isolated vortices, the authors show that in a complex environment, errors can be expected, in particular when strong currents exist in the vicinity of the vortex. The validity of the index is then analyzed using results from a realistic regional circulation model of the Peru–Chile upwelling system, where both surface and subsurface eddies coexist. The authors find that errors are mostly associated with double-core eddies (aligned surface and subsurface cores) and that the index can be useful to determine the nature of mesoscale eddies (surface or subsurface intensified) from surface (satellite) observations. However, the errors reach 24%, and some possible improvements of the index calculations are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Large-scale climate patterns influenced temperature and weather patterns around the globe in 2011. In particular, a moderate-to-strong La Nina at the beginning of the year dissipated during boreal spring but reemerged during fall. The phenomenon contributed to historical droughts in East Africa, the southern United States, and northern Mexico, as well the wettest two-year period (2010-11) on record for Australia, particularly remarkable as this follows a decade-long dry period. Precipitation patterns in South America were also influenced by La Nina. Heavy rain in Rio de Janeiro in January triggered the country's worst floods and landslides in Brazil's history. The 2011 combined average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was the coolest since 2008, but was also among the 15 warmest years on record and above the 1981-2010 average. The global sea surface temperature cooled by 0.1 degrees C from 2010 to 2011, associated with cooling influences of La Nina. Global integrals of upper ocean heat content for 2011 were higher than for all prior years, demonstrating the Earth's dominant role of the oceans in the Earth's energy budget. In the upper atmosphere, tropical stratospheric temperatures were anomalously warm, while polar temperatures were anomalously cold. This led to large springtime stratospheric ozone reductions in polar latitudes in both hemispheres. Ozone concentrations in the Arctic stratosphere during March were the lowest for that period since satellite records began in 1979. An extensive, deep, and persistent ozone hole over the Antarctic in September indicates that the recovery to pre-1980 conditions is proceeding very slowly. Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations increased by 2.10 ppm in 2011, and exceeded 390 ppm for the first time since instrumental records began. Other greenhouse gases also continued to rise in concentration and the combined effect now represents a 30% increase in radiative forcing over a 1990 baseline. Most ozone depleting substances continued to fall. The global net ocean carbon dioxide uptake for the 2010 transition period from El Nino to La Nina, the most recent period for which analyzed data are available, was estimated to be 1.30 Pg C yr(-1), almost 12% below the 29-year long-term average. Relative to the long-term trend, global sea level dropped noticeably in mid-2010 and reached a local minimum in 2011. The drop has been linked to the La Nina conditions that prevailed throughout much of 2010-11. Global sea level increased sharply during the second half of 2011. Global tropical cyclone activity during 2011 was well-below average, with a total of 74 storms compared with the 1981-2010 average of 89. Similar to 2010, the North Atlantic was the only basin that experienced above-normal activity. For the first year since the widespread introduction of the Dvorak intensity-estimation method in the 1980s, only three tropical cyclones reached Category 5 intensity level-all in the Northwest Pacific basin. The Arctic continued to warm at about twice the rate compared with lower latitudes. Below-normal summer snowfall, a decreasing trend in surface albedo, and above-average surface and upper air temperatures resulted in a continued pattern of extreme surface melting, and net snow and ice loss on the Greenland ice sheet. Warmer-than-normal temperatures over the Eurasian Arctic in spring resulted in a new record-low June snow cover extent and spring snow cover duration in this region. In the Canadian Arctic, the mass loss from glaciers and ice caps was the greatest since GRACE measurements began in 2002, continuing a negative trend that began in 1987. New record high temperatures occurred at 20 m below the land surface at all permafrost observatories on the North Slope of Alaska, where measurements began in the late 1970s. Arctic sea ice extent in September 2011 was the second-lowest on record, while the extent of old ice (four and five years) reached a new record minimum that was just 19% of normal. On the opposite pole, austral winter and spring temperatures were more than 3 degrees C above normal over much of the Antarctic continent. However, winter temperatures were below normal in the northern Antarctic Peninsula, which continued the downward trend there during the last 15 years. In summer, an all-time record high temperature of -12.3 degrees C was set at the South Pole station on 25 December, exceeding the previous record by more than a full degree. Antarctic sea ice extent anomalies increased steadily through much of the year, from briefly setting a record low in April, to well above average in December. The latter trend reflects the dispersive effects of low pressure on sea ice and the generally cool conditions around the Antarctic perimeter.

chapter in book series "International Association of Geodesy Symposia" book "Observing our Changing Earth" ISBN 978-3-540-85425-8; International audience; From October 2003 to September 2005, the International VLBI Service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS) examined current and future requirements for geodetic VLBI, including all components from antennas to analysis. IVS Working Group 3 ‘VLBI 2010', which was tasked with this effort, concluded with recommendations for a new generation of VLBI systems. These recommendations were based on the goals of achieving 1 mm measurement accuracy on global baselines, performing continuous measurements for time series of station positions and Earth orientation parameters, and reaching a turnaround time from measurement to initial geodetic results of less than 24 hours. To realize these recommendations and goals, along with the need for low cost of construction and operation, requires a complete examination of all aspects of geodetic VLBI including equipment, processes, and observational strategies. Hence, in October 2005, the IVS VLBI2010 Committee (V2C) commenced work on defining the VLBI2010 system specifications. In this paper we give a summary of the recent progress of the VLBI2010 project.

Abstract

International audience; We present 8.4 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 48 southern hemisphere extragalactic sources from the International Celestial Reference Frame. These are the second in a series of observations intended to image all such sources in the southern hemisphere at milliarcsecond resolution and bring the total number of observed sources to 111. We use these data, together with previously published data, to quantify the magnitude of the expected effect of intrinsic source structure on astrometric bandwidth synthesis VLBI observations by calculating a ``structure index'' for the sources; the structure index yields an estimate of their astrometric quality. Approximately 35% of sources in our sample have a structure index indicative of compact or very compact structures. The remaining two-thirds of our sources are less compact and should probably be avoided in astrometric and geodetic VLBI experiments requiring the highest accuracy unless intrinsic source structure can be accounted for in the astrometric/geodetic analysis.

10. 3D PEEK Objects Fabricated by Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF).

Abstract

PEEK (poly ether ether ketone) materials printed using FFF 3D printing have been actively studied on applying electronic devices in satellites owing to their excellent light weight and thermal resistance. However, the PEEK FFF process generated cavities inside due to large shrinkage has degraded both mechanical integrity and printing reliability. Here, we have investigated the correlations between nozzle temperatures and PEEK printing behaviors such as the reliability of printed line width and surface roughness. As the temperature increased from 360 to 380 °C, the width of the printed line showed a tendency to decrease. However, the width of PEEK printed lines re-increased from 350 to 426 μm at the nozzle temperatures between 380 and 400 °C, associated with solid to liquid-like phase transition and printed out distorted and disconnected lines. The surface roughness of PEEK objects increased from 49 to 55 μm as the nozzle temperature increased from 380 to 400 °C, where PEEK is melted down and quickly solidified based on more energy and additional heating time at higher printing temperatures at 400 °C. Based on these printing trends, a reliability analysis of the printed line was performed. The printed line formed the most uniform width at 380 °C and had a highest Weibull coefficient of 28.6 using the reliability analysis technique called Weibull modulus.

Abstract

Giant radio pulses (GRPs) are sporadic bursts emitted by some pulsars that last a few microseconds and are hundreds to thousands of times brighter than regular pulses from these sources. The only GRP-associated emission outside of radio wavelengths is from the Crab Pulsar, where optical emission is enhanced by a few percentage points during GRPs. We observed the Crab Pulsar simultaneously at x-ray and radio wavelengths, finding enhancement of the x-ray emission by 3.8 ± 0.7% (a 5.4σ detection) coinciding with GRPs. This implies that the total emitted energy from GRPs is tens to hundreds of times higher than previously known. Abstract

The Cold Classical Kuiper Belt, a class of small bodies in undisturbed orbits beyond Neptune, is composed of primitive objects preserving information about Solar System formation. In January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew past one of these objects, the 36-kilometer-long contact binary (486958) Arrokoth (provisional designation 2014 MU 69 ). Images from the flyby show that Arrokoth has no detectable rings, and no satellites (larger than 180 meters in diameter) within a radius of 8000 kilometers. Arrokoth has a lightly cratered, smooth surface with complex geological features, unlike those on previously visited Solar System bodies. The density of impact craters indicates the surface dates from the formation of the Solar System. Abstract

To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2 - 300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio observatory in the 1.4 - 1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 25 March 2016, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission. The timing performance of the Hitomi instruments was confirmed to meet the timing requirement and about 1,000 and 100 GRPs were simultaneously observed at the main and inter-pulse phases, respectively, and we found no apparent correlation between the giant radio pulses and the X-ray emission in either the main or inter-pulse phases. All variations are within the 2 sigma fluctuations of the X-ray fluxes at the pulse peaks, and the 3 sigma upper limits of variations of main- or inter-pulse GRPs are 22% or 80% of the peak flux in a 0.20 phase width, respectively, in the 2 - 300 keV band. The values become 25% or 110% for main or inter-pulse GRPs, respectively, when the phase width is restricted into the 0.03 phase. Among the upper limits from the Hitomi satellite, those in the 4.5-10 keV and the 70-300 keV are obtained for the first time, and those in other bands are consistent with previous reports. Numerically, the upper limits of main- and inter-pulse GRPs in the 0.20 phase width are about (2.4 and 9.3) ×10 -11 erg cm -2 , respectively. No significant variability in pulse profiles implies that the GRPs originated from a local place within the magnetosphere and the number of photon-emitting particles temporally increases. However, the results do not statistically rule out variations correlated with the GRPs, because the possible X-ray enhancement may appear due to a > 0.02% brightening of the pulse-peak flux under such conditions.

Abstract

Microbiological Experiments. The ISEMSI microbiological contamination experiments confirmed known hypotheses, such as: the trend toward uniformity of skin microbial flora across a group of individuals enclosed together; the rather fast "colonization" of the environment by microorganisms shed by human inhabitants; and the heavy growth of microorganisms in poorly accessible and wet areas (toilets, air conditioning). In addition, possible disturbances of skin defense mechanisms against colonization by potentially pathogenic microbes were noted, as well as a difficulty in monitoring the microbial contents of the atmosphere (significant random variations occur between samples taken at different times and locations). Sensors for Atmospheric Contaminants. Several different prototypes of "array sensors" for the monitoring of trace gas contaminants in the atmosphere were evaluated during ISEMSI. Their performance was promising when compared with results achieved with a more conventional (and more complex) gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer device, also used during ISEMSI. An overall picture of the most important chemical contaminants to be found in enclosed, manned habitats (including contaminants produced by man himself) was obtained via the use of Tenax gas-adsorption traps. This permitted monitoring the fluctuation of contaminants on a daily basis, as well as during the complete 4-week period. Results will provide a valuable input for designing systems to monitor and control atmospheric contamination in future spacecraft. Particular attention was devoted to the monitoring of carbon monoxide in the chamber. Results showing the correlation between its concentration in the atmosphere and the percentage of carboxyhemoglobin in the EMSInauts' blood will allow the evaluation of the correctness of the presently specified maximum allowable concentration for spacecraft. Telemedicine Experiment. The telemedicine experiment confirmed the feasibility and importance of applying to a space station scenario many aspects of remote health care already widely used in the maritime environment. ISEMSI successfully evaluated telemedical consultation procedures and training protocols for the crew. EMSInauts, trained as paramedical assistants, had to interview a "patient" (another EMSInaut, trained to feign illness symptoms), prepare an anamnesis, carry out a medical examination, assess the severity of the case, and administer effective medical care under remote medical advice. An expert system was used to provide step-by-step guidance to the paramedical assistant. ISEMSI demonstrated the great importance of practicing and rehearsing emergency procedures; it confirmed that simulation of medical emergencies during an actual long-duration space mission will be required to provide "refresher training" to astronauts trained as paramedical assistants.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
