Ionospheric effects degrade the quality of radar data, which are critical for the precision of the satellite ephemeris produced by space surveillance systems; this degradation is especially noticeable for radars such as GRAVES that operate in the very high frequency range. This article presents a simple and effective method to correct for ionospheric effects, with an evaluation on data obtained with GRAVES, the French space surveillance radar. This method relies on GPS data, and our evaluation relies on GRAVES and DORIS data. We found that the gain in terms of evaluated radial velocity can be as high as 1.76$\kappa$, where $\kappa$ is the typical root mean square of the noise on radial velocity measurements for GRAVES (excluding ionospheric effects): the error decreases from 2.60$\kappa$ to 0.83$\kappa$ for daytime satellite overhead passes. Radio spectroscopy provides a unique inspection perspective for solar and space weather research, which can reveal the plasma and energetic electron information in the solar corona and inner heliosphere. However, radio-frequency interference (RFI) from human activities affects sensitive radio telescopes, and significantly affects the quality of observation. Thus, RFI detection and mitigation for the observations is necessary to obtain high quality science-ready data. The flagging of RFI is particularly challenging for the solar and space weather observations at low frequency, because the solar radio bursts can be brighter than the RFI, and may show similar temporal behaviour. In this work, we investigate RFI flagging methods for solar and space weather observations, including a strategy for aolagger, and a novel method that makes use of a morphology convolution. These algorithms can effectively flag RFI while preserving solar radio bursts.

The paper presents results of laboratory experiment modeling the interaction between Lunar magnetic anomalies and Solar wind. To model the LMA we use quadrupole magnetic field. The main dimentionless parameter of the problem, the ion inertia length relative to the mini-magnetosphere size, well corresponds between experiment and LMA conditions. The main result is measurement of the magnetically reflected proton fluxes, which show qualitative agreement to available satellite data.

Context. Galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) and solar particles with energies greater than tens of MeV penetrate spacecraft and instruments hosted aboard space missions. The Solar Orbiter Metis coronagraph is aimed at observing the solar corona in both visible (VL) and ultraviolet (UV) light. Particle tracks are observed in the Metis images of the corona. An algorithm has been implemented in the Metis processing electronics to detect the VL image pixels crossed by cosmic rays. This algorithm was initially enabled for the VL instrument only, since the process of separating the particle tracks in the UV images has proven to be very challenging. Aims. We study the impact of the overall bulk of particles of galactic and solar origin on the Metis coronagraph images. We discuss the effects of the increasing solar activity after the Solar Orbiter mission launch on the secondary particle production in the spacecraft. Methods. We compared Monte Carlo simulations of GCRs crossing or interacting in the Metis VL CMOS sensor to observations gathered in 2020 and 2022. We also evaluated the impact of solar energetic particle events of different intensities on the Metis images. Results. The study of the role of abundant and rare cosmic rays in firing pixels in the Metis VL images of the corona allows us to estimate the efficiency of the algorithm applied for cosmic-ray track removal from the images and to demonstrate that the instrument performance had remained unchanged during the first two years of the Solar Orbiter operations. The outcome of this work can be used to estimate the Solar Orbiter instrument's deep charging and the order of magnitude for energetic particles crossing the images of Metis and other instruments such as STIX and EUI., 8 pages, 6 figures

With the sustained rise in satellite deployment in Low Earth Orbits, the collision risk from untracked space debris is also increasing. Often small-sized space debris (below 10 cm) are hard to track using the existing state-of-the-art methods. However, knowing such space debris' trajectory is crucial to avoid future collisions. We present a Physics Informed Neural Network (PINN) - based approach for estimation of the trajectory of space debris after a collision event between active satellite and space debris. In this work, we have simulated 8565 inelastic collision events between active satellites and space debris. Using the velocities of the colliding objects before the collision, we calculate the post-collision velocities and record the observations. The state (position and velocity), coefficient of restitution, and mass estimation of un-tracked space debris after an inelastic collision event along with the tracked active satellite can be posed as an optimization problem by observing the deviation of the active satellite from the trajectory. We have applied the classical optimization method, the Lagrange multiplier approach, for solving the above optimization problem and observed that its state estimation is not satisfactory as the system is under-determined. Subsequently, we have designed Deep Neural network-based methods and Physics Informed Neural Network (PINN )based methods for solving the above optimization problem. We have compared the performance of the models using root mean square error (RMSE) and interquartile range of the predictions. We study solar wind magnetic turbulence with Parker Solar Probe during its first perihelion (at 0.17 au), from MHD to kinetic plasma scales. Using Morlet wavelet decomposition, we detect intermittent coherent structures, appearing as localized in time energetic events and covering a large range of scales. This implies the presence of embedded coherent structures from MHD down to sub-ion scales. For example, we observe a current sheet at MHD scales ($\sim 200$ s) with magnetic fluctuations inherent for a magnetic vortex at ion scales ($\sim 1$ s) and at sub-ion scales ($\sim 0.1$ s). The amplitude anisotropy of magnetic fluctuations is analyzed within nearly (i) $200$ structures at MHD scales, (ii) $\sim 2 \cdot 10^3$ events at ion scales and (iii) $\sim 10^4$ events at sub-ion scales. We compare it with crossings of model structures, such as Alfvén vortices, current sheets and magnetic holes, along the trajectories with various impact parameters. From this comparison, we conclude that at MHD and ion scales the majority of the structures are incompressible and represent mainly dipole Alfvén vortices (>80 %), monopole Alfvén vortices (, Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal, 25 pages, 15 figures

We face unprecedented resource stresses in the 21st Century such as global climate disruptions, freshwater scarcity, expanding energy demands, and the threat of global pandemics. Historically, societies have relieved resource stress by increasing trade, innovating technologically, expanding territorially, regulating, redistributing, making alliances, creating new economic models, training new skills, as well as conducting war. Do we continue depleting our already strained resources leading to more regulation, redistribution, alliances, new economics, and war or do we grow our resources using innovation, expansion, new economics, and new skills? We present the argument for evolving space development using asteroid mining as the primary activity for frontier expansion aided by Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Moon, and Mars waystations. Forecast space weather is a necessary technology baseline for developing this pathway. All activity off Earth will require a fundamental knowledge of how the energetics of space will affect technological progress. We discuss the critical elements this space economy expansion, including technical feasibility and infrastructure development, economic and geopolitical viability complete with the US National Space Weather Program dialogue, ethical and legal considerations, and risk management. To comprehensively understand saturation of two-dimensional ($2$D) magnetized Kelvin-Helmholtz-instability-driven turbulence, energy transfer analysis is extended from the traditional interaction between scales to include eigenmode interactions, by using the nonlinear couplings of linear eigenmodes of the ideal instability. While both kinetic and magnetic energies cascade to small scales, a significant fraction of turbulent energy deposited by unstable modes in the fluctuation spectrum is shown to be re-routed to the conjugate-stable modes at the instability scale. They remove energy from the forward cascade at its inception. The remaining cascading energy flux is shown to attenuate exponentially at a small scale, dictated by the large-scale stable modes. Guided by a widely used instability-saturation assumption, a general quasilinear model of instability is tested by retaining all nonlinear interactions except those that couple to the large-scale stable modes. These complex interactions are analytically removed from the magnetohydrodynamic equations using a novel technique. Observations are: an explosive large-scale vortex separation instead of the well-known merger of $2$D, a dramatic enhancement in turbulence level and spectral energy fluxes, and a reduced small-scale dissipation length-scale. These show critical role of the stable modes in instability saturation. Metasurfaces, optics made from subwavelength-scale nanostructures, have been limited to millimeter-sizes by the scaling challenge of producing vast numbers of precisely engineered elements over a large area. In this study, we demonstrate an all-glass 100 mm diameter metasurface lens (metalens) comprising 18.7 billion nanostructures that operates in the visible spectrum with a fast f-number (f/1.5, NA=0.32) using deep-ultraviolet (DUV) projection lithography. Our work overcomes the exposure area constraints of lithography tools and demonstrates that large metasurfaces are commercially feasible. Additionally, we investigate the impact of various fabrication errors on the imaging quality of the metalens, several of which are unique to such large area metasurfaces. We demonstrate direct astronomical imaging of the Sun, the Moon, and emission nebulae at visible wavelengths and validate the robustness of such metasurfaces under extreme environmental thermal swings for space applications.

Asteroids have called the attention of researchers around the world. Its chemical and physical composition can give us important information about the formation of our Solar System. In addition, the hypothesis of mining some of these objects is considered, since they contain precious metals. However, some asteroids have their orbits close to the orbit of the Earth. These nearby objects can pose a danger to our life in the planet, since some of them are large enough to cause catastrophic damage to the Earth. We will pay attention to the theme of deflecting a potentially dangerous asteroid. There are currently two main forms of this deviation: i) the impact of an object at high velocity with the asteroid, which can be a space vehicle or a smaller asteroid; ii) the use of a gravitational "tractor", which consist in placing an object (another asteroid or part of an asteroid), close to the body that is approaching the Earth, such that this gravitational interference can deflect its trajectory. In this work, we will evaluate the influence of gravitational perturbations in the most commonly mentioned asteroid deflection model in the literature, the kinetic impact deflection technique. In situ observations of interstellar neutral (ISN) helium atoms by the IBEX-Lo instrument onboard the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission are used to determine the velocity and temperature of the pristine very local interstellar medium (VLISM). Most ISN helium atoms penetrating the heliosphere, known as the primary population, originate in the pristine VLISM. As the primary atoms travel through the outer heliosheath, they charge exchange with He$^+$ ions in slowed and compressed plasma creating the secondary population. With more than 2.4 million ISN helium atoms sampled by IBEX during ISN seasons 2009-2020, we compare the observations with predictions of a parametrized model of ISN helium transport in the heliosphere. We account for the filtration of ISN helium atoms at the heliospheric boundaries by charge exchange and elastic collisions. We examine the sensitivity of the ISN helium fluxes to the interstellar conditions described by the pristine VLISM velocity, temperature, magnetic field, and composition. We show that comprehensive modeling of the filtration processes is critical for interpreting ISN helium observations, as the change in the derived VLISM conditions exceeds the statistical uncertainties when accounting for these effects. The pristine VLISM parameters found by this analysis are the flow speed (26.6 km s$^{-1}$), inflow direction in ecliptic coordinates (255.7$^\circ$, 5.04$^\circ$), temperature (7350 K), and B-V plane inclination to the ecliptic plane (53.7$^\circ$). The derived pristine VLISM He$^+$ density is $9.7\times10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs) play an important role in high-energetic events like solar flares and coronal mass ejections in the solar atmosphere. Importantly, solar observations suggest an association of some flaring events with quadrupolar magnetic configurations. However, the formation and subsequent evolution of MFRs in such magnetic configurations still need to be fully understood. In this paper, we present idealized magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations of MFR formation in a quadrupolar magnetic configuration. A suitable initial magnetic field having a quadrupolar configuration is constructed by modifying a three-dimensional (3D) linear force-free magnetic field. The initial magnetic field contains neutral lines, which consist of X-type null points. The simulated dynamics initially demonstrate the oppositely directed magnetic field lines located across the polarity inversion lines (PILs) moving towards each other, resulting in magnetic reconnections. Due to these reconnections, four highly twisted MFRs form over the PILs. With time, the foot points of the MFRs move towards the X-type neutral lines and reconnect, generating complex magnetic structures around the neutral lines, thus making the MFR topology more complex in the quadrupolar configuration than those formed in bipolar loop systems. Further evolution reveals the non-uniform rise of the MFRs. Importantly, the simulations indicate that the pre-existing X-type null points in magnetic configurations can be crucial to the evolution of the MFRs and may lead to the observed brightenings during the onset of some flaring events in the quadrupolar configurations., 18 pages, 9 figures

We analyse the signature and origin of transient structures embedded in the slow solar wind, and observed by the Wide-Field Imager for Parker Solar Probe (WISPR) during its first 10 passages close to the Sun. WISPR provides a new in-depth vision on these structures, which have long been speculated to be a remnant of the pinch-off magnetic reconnection occurring at the tip of helmet streamers. We pursue the previous modelling works of Reville (2020b, 2022) that simulate the dynamic release of quasi-periodic density structures into the slow wind through a tearing-induced magnetic reconnection at the tip of helmet streamers. Synthetic WISPR white-light (WL) images are produced using a newly developed advanced forward modelling algorithm, that includes an adaptive grid refinement to resolve the smallest transient structures in the simulations. We analyse the aspect and properties of the simulated WL signatures in several case studies, typical of solar minimum and near-maximum configurations. Quasi-periodic density structures associated with small-scale magnetic flux ropes are formed by tearing-induced magnetic reconnection at the heliospheric current sheet and within 3-7Rs. Their appearance in WL images is greatly affected by the shape of the streamer belt and the presence of pseudo-streamers. The simulations show periodicities on the ~90-180min, ~7-10hr and ~25-50hr timescales, which are compatible with WISPR and past observations. The low-latitude ionosphere is a dynamic region with a wide range of disturbances in temporal and spatial scales. The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) situated in the low-latitude region has demonstrated its ability to detect various ionospheric phenomena. It can detect total electron content (TEC) variation with precision of 1 mTECU and also can measure TEC gradient with an accuracy of about $\rm7\times 10^{-4}\,TECU\,km^{-1}$. This paper describes the spectral analysis of previously calculated TEC gradient measurements and validates them by comparing their properties using two bands. The analysis tracked individual waves associated with medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) and smaller waves down to wavelengths of $\sim$ 10 km. The ionosphere is found to have unanticipated changes during sunrise hours, with waves changed propagation direction as the sun approached the zenith. The density decreases exponentially with height in the solar gravitationally stratified atmosphere, therefore the collisional coupling between the ionized plasma and the neutrals also decreases. Here, we investigate the role of collisions between ions and neutrals on the reconnection process occurring at various heights in the atmosphere. We perform simulations of magnetic reconnection induced by a localized resistivity in a gravitationally stratified atmosphere, where we vary the height of the initial reconnection X-point. We compare a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and two two-fluid configurations: one where the collisional coupling is calculated from local plasma parameters and another where the coupling is decreased, so that collisional effects are enhanced. Simulations in a stratified atmosphere show similar structures in MHD and two-fluid simulations with strong coupling. However, when collisional effects are increased to attain representative parameter regimes, we find a nonlinear runaway instability, which separates the plasma-neutral densities across the current sheet (CS). With increased collisional effects, the initial decoupling in velocity heats the neutrals and this sets up a nonlinear feedback where neutrals migrate outside the CS, replacing charged particles which accumulate towards the center of the CS. The reconnection rate has a maximum value around 0.1, similar for both reconnection heights, and is consistent with the use of a localized enhanced resistivity used in all three models. The initial stages of plasmoid formation, observed near the end of our simulations, is influenced by the outflow from the primary reconnection point, rather than by collisions. We synthesize optically thin emission for both MHD and two-fluid models, which can show a very different evolution when the charged particle density is used instead of the total density.

In recent years (2000-2021), human-space activities have been increasing faster than ever. More than 36000 Earth' orbiting objects, all larger than 10 cm, in orbit around the Earth, are currently tracked by the European Space Agency (ESA). Around 70\% of all cataloged objects are in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO). Aerodynamic drag provides one of the main sources of perturbations in this population, gradually decreasing the semi-major axis and period of the LEO satellites. Usually, an empirical atmosphere model as a function of solar radio flux and geomagnetic data is used to calculate the orbital decay and lifetimes of LEO satellites. In this respect, a good forecast for the space weather data could be a key tool to improve the model of drag. In this work, we propose using Time Series Forecasting Model to predict the future behavior of the solar flux and to calculate the atmospheric density, to improve the analytical models and reduce the drag uncertainty.

The earliest evidence on spatial distributions of solar energetic particles (SEPs) compared events from many different source longitudes on the Sun, but the early Pioneers provided the first evidence of the large areas of equal SEP intensities across the magnetically-confined "reservoirs" late in the events. More-detailed measurements of the importance of self-generated waves and trapping structures around the shock waves that accelerate SEPs were obtained from the Helios mission plus IMP 8, especially during the year when the two Voyager spacecraft also happened by. The extent of the dozen widest SEP events in a solar cycle, that effectively wrap around the Sun, was revealed by the widely separated STEREO spacecraft with three-point intensities fit to Gaussians. Element abundances of the broadest SEP events favor average coronal element abundances with little evidence of heavy-element-enhanced "impulsive suprathermal" ions that often dominate the seed population of the shocks, even in extremely energetic local events. However, it is hard to define a distribution with two or three points. Advancing the physics of SEPs may require a return to the closer spacing of the Helios era with coverage mapped by a half-dozen spacecraft to help disentangle the distribution of the SEPs from the underlying structure of the magnetic field and the accelerating shock., 19 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Frontiers of Space Science

Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves lead to rapid scattering of relativistic electrons in Earth's radiation belts, due to their large amplitudes relative to other waves that interact with electrons of this energy range. A central feature of electron precipitation driven by EMIC waves is deeply elusive: moderate precipitating fluxes at energies below the minimum resonance energy of EMIC waves occur concurrently with strong precipitating fluxes at resonance energies in low-altitude spacecraft observations. Here we expand on a previously reported solution to this problem: nonresonant scattering due to wave packets of finite size. We first generalize the quasi-linear diffusion model to incorporate nonresonant scattering by a generic wave shape. The diffusion rate decays exponentially away from the resonance, where shorter packets lower decay rates and thus widen the energy range of significant scattering. Using realistic EMIC wave packets from $\delta f$ particle-in-cell simulations, we then perform test particle simulations, and demonstrate that intense, short packets extend the energy of significant scattering well below the minimum resonance energy, consistent with our theoretical prediction. Finally, we compare the calculated precipitating-to-trapped flux ratio of relativistic electrons to ELFIN observations, and infer the wave power spectra that are consistent with the measured flux ratio. We demonstrate that even with a narrow wave spectrum, short EMIC wave packets can provide moderately intense precipitating fluxes well below the minimum resonance energy., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

In this piece we study complexity science in the context of Heliophysics, describing it not as a discipline, but as a paradigm. In the context of Heliophysics, complexity science is the study of a star, interplanetary environment, magnetosphere, upper and terrestrial atmospheres, and planetary surface as interacting subsystems. Complexity science studies entities in a system (e.g., electrons in an atom, planets in a solar system, individuals in a society) and their interactions, and is the nature of what emerges from these interactions. It is a paradigm that employs systems approaches and is inherently multi- and cross-scale. Heliophysics processes span at least 15 orders of magnitude in space and another 15 in time, and its reaches go well beyond our own solar system and Earth's space environment to touch planetary, exoplanetary, and astrophysical domains. It is an uncommon domain within which to explore complexity science. After first outlining the dimensions of complexity science, the review proceeds in three epochal parts: 1) A pivotal year in the Complexity Heliophysics paradigm: 1996; 2) The transitional years that established foundations of the paradigm (1996-2010); and 3) The emergent literature largely beyond 2010. This review article excavates the lived and living history of complexity science in Heliophysics. The intention is to provide inspiration, help researchers think more coherently about ideas of complexity science in Heliophysics, and guide future research. It will be instructive to Heliophysics researchers, but also to any reader interested in or hoping to advance the frontier of systems and complexity science.

The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the effectiveness of ground-based support for space missions, primarily PSP, using large Ukrainian decameter radio telescopes. Another goal of the work is to carry out cross calibration of the radiometers onboard spacecraft using the calibrated data of the ground-based radio telescopes. One of the most common methods of remote diagnostics of the solar corona is the study of radio emission, the sources of which are located in the solar corona at different heliocentric altitudes. The technique of joint space terrestrial observations consists in the simultaneous observation of individual events and their analysis in the widest possible frequency band during the maximum approach of the PSP vehicle to the Sun. At the same time, observation in the common frequency band is proposed to be used for calibration of the onboard radio receivers. The methods of planning joint space terrestrial observations are substantiated. Using the data of the UTR 2, URAN 2 radio telescopes and the PSP probe, the dynamic and polarization spectra of the simultaneously observed bursts on June 9, 2020 were obtained. The identification and comparison of individual bursts was carried out. A common dynamic spectrum of the bursts in the frequency band 0.5 ... 32 MHz was obtained. Cross calibration of the HFR receiver of the FIELDS PSP module in the frequency band 10...18 MHz was made using the calibrated data of terrestrial radio telescopes. The effectiveness of ground-based support of the PSP mission by the large Ukrainian radio telescopes is shown. Examples of joint observations are given, and the method of cross calibration of the FIELD PSP module receivers is demonstrated. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) tracking of the SpaceX Starlink satellite launch on February 03, 2022 is reviewed. Of the 49 Starlink satellites released into orbit, 38 were eventually lost. Thirty-two of the satellites were never tracked by NORAD. There have been three articles written proposing physical mechanisms to explain the satellite losses. It is argued that none of the proposed mechanisms can explain the immediate loss of 32 of the 49 satellites. The area ratios of sunspots to white light faculae in the first two years of sunspot cycles 12-21 correlate remarkably well with the peak amplitudes of those cycles between 1878-1980 (Brown and Evans, 1980). This finding could not be used to predict subsequent cycle amplitudes because the Royal Greenwich Observatory program of facular area measurements was discontinued in 1976. We use continuum images from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) and the Heliospheric and Magnetic Imager (HMI) to show that the close relation holds also for cycle 24, and we predict an amplitude of approximately 185 for the current cycle 25.

Particles are accelerated to very high, non-thermal energies during explosive energy-release phenomena in space, solar, and astrophysical plasma environments. While it has been established that magnetic reconnection plays an important role in the dynamics of Earth's magnetosphere, it remains unclear how magnetic reconnection can further explain particle acceleration to non-thermal energies. Here we review recent progress in our understanding of particle acceleration by magnetic reconnection in Earth's magnetosphere. With improved resolutions, recent spacecraft missions have enabled detailed studies of particle acceleration at various structures such as the diffusion region, separatrix, jets, magnetic islands (flux ropes), and dipolarization front. With the guiding-center approximation of particle motion, many studies have discussed the relative importance of the parallel electric field as well as the Fermi and betatron effects. However, in order to fully understand the particle acceleration mechanism and further compare with particle acceleration in solar and astrophysical plasma environments, there is a need for further investigation of, for example, energy partition and the precise role of turbulence., Submitted to Space Science Reviews; Revised on July 21, 2023

Understanding planetesimal formation is an essential first step to understanding planet formation. The distribution of these first solid bodies will drive the locations where planetary embryos can grow. We seek to understand the parameter space of possible protoplanetary disk formation and evolution models of our Solar System. A good protoplanetary disk scenario for the Solar System must meet at least the following three criteria: 1) an extended dust disk (at least 45 au); 2) formation of planetesimals in at least two distinct locations; and 3) transport of high temperatures condensates (i.e., calcium-aluminium-rich inclusion, CAIs) to the outer disk. We explore a large parameter space to study the effect of the disk viscosity, the timescale of infall of material into the disk, the distance within which material is deposited into the disk, and the fragmentation threshold of dust particles. We find that scenarios with a large initial disk viscosity ($α>0.05$), relatively short infall timescale ($T_{infall}, accepted to be published in A&A

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can create significant disruption to human activities and systems on Earth, much of which can be mitigated with prior warning of the upstream solar wind conditions. However, it is currently extremely challenging to accurately predict the arrival time and internal structure of a CME from coronagraph images alone. In this study, we take advantage of a rare opportunity to use Solar Orbiter, at 0.5\,AU upstream of Earth, as an upstream solar wind monitor. We were able to use real time science quality magnetic field measurements, taken only 12 minutes earlier, to predict the arrival time of a CME prior to reaching Earth. We used measurements at Solar Orbiter to constrain an ensemble of simulation runs from the ELEvoHI model, reducing the uncertainty in arrival time from 10.4\,hours to 2.5\,hours. There was also an excellent agreement in the $B_z$ profile between Solar Orbiter and Wind spacecraft, despite being separated by 0.5\,AU and 10$^{\circ}$ longitude. Therefore, we show that it is possible to predict not only the arrival time of a CME, but the sub-structure of the magnetic field within it, over a day in advance. The opportunity to use Solar Orbiter as an upstream solar wind monitor will repeat once a year, which should further help assess the efficacy upstream in-situ measurements in real time space weather forecasting., Submitted for publication in Space Weather

Three generations of the Miniature X-ray Solar Spectrometer (MinXSS) have flown on small satellites with the goal "to explore the energy distribution of soft X-ray (SXR) emissions from the quiescent Sun, active regions, and during solar flares, and to model the impact on Earth's ionosphere and thermosphere". The primary science instrument is the Amptek X123 X-ray spectrometer that has improved with each generation of the MinXSS experiment. This third generation MinXSS-3 has higher energy resolution and larger effective area than its predecessors and is also known as the Dual-zone Aperture X-ray Solar Spectrometer (DAXSS). It was launched on the INSPIRESat-1 satellite on 2022 February 14, and INSPIRESat-1 has successfully completed its 6-month prime mission. The INSPIRESat-1 is in a dawn-dusk, Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO) and therefore has 24-hour coverage of the Sun during most of its mission so far. The rise of Solar Cycle 25 (SC-25) has been observed by DAXSS. This paper introduces the INSPIRESat-1 DAXSS solar SXR observations, and we focus the science results here on a solar occultation experiment and multiple flares on 2022 April 24. One key flare result is that the reduction of elemental abundances is greatest during the flare impulsive phase and thus highlighting the important role of chromospheric evaporation during flares to inject warmer plasma into the coronal loops. Furthermore, these results are suggestive that the amount of chromospheric evaporation is related to flare temperature and intensity., 43 pages including 19-page Appendix A, 8 figures, 7 tables

Previous survey studies reported that coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can exhibit various structures in white-light coronagraphs, and $\sim$30\% of them have the typical three-part feature in the high corona (e.g., 2--6 $R_\odot$), which has been taken as the prototypical structure of CMEs. It is widely accepted that CMEs result from eruption of magnetic flux ropes (MFRs), and the three-part structure can be understood easily by means of the MFR eruption. It is interesting and significant to answer why only $\sim$30\% of CMEs have the three-part feature in previous studies. Here we conduct a synthesis of the CME structure in the field of view (FOV) of K-Coronagraph (1.05--3 $R_\odot$). In total, 369 CMEs are observed from 2013 September to 2022 November. After inspecting the CMEs one by one through joint observations of the AIA, K-Coronagraph and LASCO/C2, we find 71 events according to the criteria: 1) limb event; 2) normal CME, i.e., angular width $\geq$ 30$^{\circ}$; 3) K-Coronagraph caught the early eruption stage. All (or more than 90\% considering several ambiguous events) of the 71 CMEs exhibit the three-part feature in the FOV of K-Coronagraph, while only 30--40\% have the feature in the C2 FOV (2--6 $R_\odot$). For the first time, our studies show that 90--100\% and 30--40\% of normal CMEs possess the three-part structure in the low and high corona, respectively, which demonstrates that many CMEs can lose the three-part feature during their early evolutions, and strongly supports that most (if not all) CMEs have the MFR structures., 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

These notes present the fundamentals of Fermi acceleration at shocks, with a special attention to the role that supernova remnants have in producing Galactic cosmic rays. Then, the recent discoveries in the theory of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) that stem from first-principle kinetic plasma simulations are discussed. When ion acceleration is efficient, the back-reaction of non-thermal particles and self-generated magnetic fields becomes prominent and leads to both enhanced shock compression and particle spectra significantly softer than those predicted by the standard test-particle DSA theory. These results are discussed in the context of the non-thermal phenomenology of astrophysical shocks, with a special focus on the remnant of SN1006., 39 pages, 13 figures. Comments welcome. Future gravitational wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (\textit{LISA}), will be able to resolve a significant number of the ultra compact stellar-mass binaries in our own Galaxy and its neighborhood. These will be mostly double white dwarf (DWD) binaries, and their underlying population characteristics can be directly correlated to the different properties of the Galaxy. In particular, with \textit{LISA} we will be able to resolve $\sim\mathcal{O}(10^4)$ binaries, while the rest will generate a confusion foreground signal. Analogously to how the total electromagnetic radiation emitted by a galaxy can be related to the underlying total stellar mass, in this work we propose a framework to infer the same quantity by investigating the spectral shape and amplitude of the confusion foreground signal. For a fixed DWD evolution model, and thus a fixed binary fraction, we retrieve percentage-level relative errors on the total stellar mass, which improves for increasing values of the mass. At the same time, we find that variations in the Milky Way shape, at a fixed mass and at scale heights smaller than 500~pc, are not distinguishable based on the shape of stochastic signal alone. We perform this analysis on simulations of the LISA data, estimating the resolvable sources based on signal-to-noise criteria. Finally, we utilize the catalogue of resolvable sources to probe the characteristics of the underlying population of DWD binaries. A model of geocoronal solar wind charge exchange (SWCX) emission was built and compared to five Suzaku detections of bright geocoronal SWCX events. An exospheric neutral hydrogen distribution model, charge exchange cross sections, solar wind ion data taken with the ACE and WIND satellites, and magnetic field models of the Earth's magnetosphere are all combined in order to predict time-variable geocoronal SWCX emission depending on line-of-sight directions of the Suzaku satellite. The modeled average intensities of O VII emission lines were consistent with the observed ones within a factor of three in four out of the five cases except for an event in which a line-of-sight direction was toward the night side of the high-latitude magnetosheath and a major geomagnetic storm was observed. Those of O VIII emission lines were underestimated by a factor of three or more in all the five cases. On the other hand, the modeled O VII and O VIII light curves reproduced the observed ones after being scaled by ratios between the observed and modeled average intensities. In particular, short-term variations due to line-of-sight directions traversing cusp regions during an orbital motion of the Suzaku satellite were reproduced. Observations of long-term north-south asymmetry in solar activity demand the equator-symmetric (quadrupolar) mode be present in the solar magnetic field in line with the dominant antisymmetric (dipolar) mode. This paper proposes treating the sunspot area as a proxy for subsurface toroidal magnetic flux to infer the quadrupolar mode of the solar dynamo from sunspot data. Toroidal pseudo-fluxes (PF) in the northern and southern hemispheres are defined as a signed sunspot area with plus or minus sign prescribed to them in accord with the Hale's sunspot polarity rules. Statistical correlation analysis and wavelet analysis of so-defined PFs reveal quadrupolar oscillations with a period of about 16 yr and amplitude of about 0.17 relative to the amplitude of the dominant 22-yr dipolar mode., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Models for cosmic ray (CR) dynamics fundamentally depend on the rate of CR scattering from magnetic fluctuations. In the ISM, for CRs with energies ~MeV-TeV, these fluctuations are usually attributed either to 'extrinsic turbulence' (ET) - a cascade from larger scales - or 'self-confinement' (SC) - self-generated fluctuations from CR streaming. Using simple analytic arguments and detailed live numerical CR transport calculations in galaxy simulations, we show that both of these, in standard form, cannot explain even basic qualitative features of observed CR spectra. For ET, any spectrum that obeys critical balance or features realistic anisotropy, or any spectrum that accounts for finite damping below the dissipation scale, predicts qualitatively incorrect spectral shapes and scalings of B/C and other species. Even if somehow one ignored both anisotropy and damping, observationally-required scattering rates disagree with ET predictions by orders-of-magnitude. For SC, the dependence of driving on CR energy density means that it is nearly impossible to recover observed CR spectral shapes and scalings, and again there is an orders-of-magnitude normalization problem. But more severely, SC solutions with super-Alfvenic streaming are unstable. In live simulations, they revert to either arbitrarily-rapid CR escape with zero secondary production, or to bottleneck solutions with far-too-strong CR confinement and secondary production. Resolving these fundamental issues without discarding basic plasma processes requires invoking different drivers for scattering fluctuations. These must act on a broad range of scales with a power spectrum obeying several specific (but plausible) constraints., 36 pages, 7 figures. We study the collision frequencies of charged particles in the complex plasmas with the non-Maxwellian velocity distributions. The average collision frequencies of electron-ion, electron-electron and ion-ion are derived in the two-parameter (r,s) and the three-parameter (a,r,s) velocity distributions, respectively. We show that these average collision frequencies in the complex plasmas depend strongly on the parameters in the non-Maxwellian distributions and thus are significant deviations from those in the plasmas with a Maxwell velocity distribution. Numerical analyses are made of the effects of the parameters on the average collision frequencies. A systematic study of ionospheric scintillation at the low-latitudes, especially around the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) and the magnetic equator, is essential in understanding the dynamics of ionospheric variation and related physical processes. Our study involves NavIC $S_{4_C}$ observations over Indore and Hyderabad. Additionally, GPS $S_{4_C}$ observations over Indore were analyzed, under disturbed as well as quiet time ionospheric conditions from September 2017 through 2019, falling in the declining phase of the solar cycle 24. The $S_{4_C}$ observations were further analyzed using proxy parameters: ROT and ROTI. These results have been obtained from three satellites of the NavIC constellation (PRNs 2, 5, and 6). The onset times of scintillations \textbf{were} observed to be around 19:30 LT (h) and 20:30 LT (h) for Hyderabad and Indore respectively, while the $S_{4_C}$ peak values occurred between 22:00 LT (h) and 23:00 LT (h). The reliability of NavIC was evaluated using scattering coefficients that revealed a good correlation across the pair of signals during quiet time ionospheric conditions. The observations clearly show that the amplitude scintillation of the NavIC signal follows the Nakagami-m distribution along with the $\alpha-\mu$ distribution as a depiction of the deep power fades caused by scintillation on these signals. This paper shows the impact of such systematic studies near these locations for the first time, in improving the understanding of the dynamic nature of low-latitude ionosphere under low solar activity conditions.

Long-term sunspot observations and solar activity reconstructions reveal that the Sun occasionally slips into quiescent phases known as solar grand minima, the dynamics during which is not well understood. We use a flux transport dynamo model with stochastic fluctuations in the mean-field and Babcock-Leighton poloidal field source terms to simulate solar cycle variability. Our long-term simulations detect a gradual decay of the polar field during solar grand minima episodes. Although regular active region emergence stops, compromising the Babcock-Leighton mechanism, weak magnetic activity continues during minima phases sustained by a mean-field $\alpha$-effect; surprisingly, periodic polar field amplitude modulation persist during these phases. A spectral analysis of the simulated polar flux time series shows that the 11-year cycle becomes less prominent while high frequency periods and periods around 22 years manifest during grand minima episodes. Analysis of long-term solar open flux observations appears to be consistent with this finding. Through numerical experimentation we demonstrate that the persistence of periodic amplitude modulation in the polar field and the dominant frequencies during grand minima episodes are governed by the speed of the meridional plasma flow -- which appears to act as a clock., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Some measurable characteristic timescales $\left\{t_\mathrm{trn}\right\}$ of transiting exoplanets are investigated in order to check preliminarily if their cumulative shifts over the years induced by the post-Newtonian (pN) gravitoelectric (Schwarzschild) and gravitomagnetic (Lense-Thirring) components of the stellar gravitational field are, at least in principle, measurable. Both the primary (planet in front of the star) and the secondary (planet behind the star) transits are considered along with their associated characteristic time intervals: the total transit duration $t_D$, the ingress/egress transit duration $\tau$, the full width at half maximum primary transit duration $t_H$, and also the time of conjunction $t_\mathrm{cj}$. For each of them, the net changes per orbit $\langle\Delta t_D\rangle,\,\langle\Delta\tau\rangle,\,\langle\Delta t_H\rangle,\,\langle\Delta t_\mathrm{cj}\rangle$ induced by the aforementioned pN accelerations are analytically obtained; also the Newtonian effect of the star's quadrupole mass moment $J_2^\star$ is worked out. They are calculated for a fictitious Sun-Jupiter system in an edge-on elliptical orbit, and the results are compared with the present-day experimental accuracies for the HD 286123 b exoplanet. Its pN gravitoelectric shift $\left\langle\Delta t_\mathrm{cj}^\mathrm{1pN}\right\rangle$ may become measurable, at least in principle, at a $\simeq 8\times 10^{-5}$ level of (formal) relative accuracy after about 30 years of continuous monitoring corresponding to about 1000 transits. Systematics like, e.g., confusing time standards, neglecting star spots, neglecting clouds, would likely deteriorate the actual accuracy. Differential drag is a promising option to control the relative motion of distributed satellites in the Very Low Earth Orbit regime which are not equipped with dedicated thrusting devices. A major downside of the methodology, however, is that its control authority is (mainly) limited to the in-plane relative motion control. By additionally applying differential lift, however, all three translational degrees-of-freedom become controllable. In this article, we present a tool to flexibly plan optimal three-dimensional formation flight maneuvers via differential lift and drag. In the planning process, the most significant perturbing effects in this orbital regime, namely the J2 effect and atmospheric forces, are taken into account. Moreover, varying atmospheric densities as well as the co-rotation of the atmosphere are considered. Besides its flexible and high-fidelity nature, the major assets of the proposed methodology are that the in-and out-of-plane relative motion are controlled simultaneously via deviations in the yaw angles of the respective satellites and that the planned trajectory is optimal in a sense that the overall decay during the maneuver is minimized. Thereby, the remaining lifetime of the satellites is maximized and the practicability and sustainability of the methodology significantly increased. To the best of the authors knowledge, a tool with the given capabilities has not yet been presented in literature. The resulting trajectories for three fundamentally different relevant formation flight maneuvers are presented and discussed in detail in order to indicate the vast range of applicability of the tool.

We analyze variations of high-energy charged particle populations filling various magnetospheric regions under, inside, and outside of the Van Allen inner and outer electron radiation belts in May 2009. The study is based on the experimental data obtained from the STEP-F and the SphinX instruments placed close to each other aboard the low-Earth circular orbit CORONAS-Photon satellite. Data analysis of particle fluencies collected from the highly sensitive STEP-F device indicates the presence of a persistent electron belt at L = 1.6, i.e., beneath the well-known Van Allen electron inner radiation belt of the Earth's magnetosphere. The electron energy spectrum in this 'new' belt is much steeper than that of the inner belt so that the electrons with energies Ee > 400 keV were almost not recorded on L = 1.6 outside the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). We introduce the concept of effective lowest threshold energies for X-ray detectors used in the solar soft X-ray spectrophotometer SphinX and define their values for two regions: the SAA and the Van Allen outer belt. Different values of lowest threshold energies are directly associated with different slopes of particle energy spectra. Cross-analyses of data obtained from the STEP-F and SphinX instruments initially built for various purposes made it possible to detect the highly anisotropic character of the spatial electron distribution in radiation belts in both Southern and northern hemispheres. The nearby M dwarf WX UMa has recently been detected at radio wavelengths with LOFAR. The combination of its observed brightness temperature and circular polarisation fraction suggests that the emission is generated via the electron-cyclotron maser instability. Two distinct mechanisms have been proposed to power such emission from low-mass stars: either a sub-Alfv\'enic interaction between the stellar magnetic field and an orbiting planet, or reconnection at the edge of the stellar magnetosphere. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of both mechanisms, utilising the information about the star's surrounding plasma environment obtained from modelling its stellar wind. Using this information, we show that a Neptune-sized exoplanet with a magnetic field strength of 10-100 G orbiting at ~0.034 au can accurately reproduce the observed radio emission from the star, with corresponding orbital periods of 7.4 days. Due to the stellar inclination, a planet in an equatorial orbit is unlikely to transit the star. While such a planet could induce radial velocity semi-amplitudes from 7 to 396 m s$^{-1}$, it is unlikely that this signal could be detected with current techniques due to the activity of the host star. The application of our planet-induced radio emission model here illustrates its exciting potential as a new tool for identifying planet-hosting candidates from long-term radio monitoring. We also develop a model to investigate the reconnection-powered emission scenario. While this approach produces less favourable results than the planet-induced scenario, it nevertheless serves as a potential alternative emission mechanism which is worth exploring further., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Missing cascades from TeV blazar beams indicate that collective plasma effects may play a significant role in their energy loss. It is possible to mimic the evolution of such highly energetic pair beams in laboratory experiments using modern accelerators. The fate of the beam is governed by two different processes, energy loss through the unstable mode and energetic broadening of the pair beam through diffusion in momentum space. We chalk out this evolution using a Fokker-Planck approach in which the drift and the diffusion terms respectively describe these phenomena in a compact form. We present particle-in-cell simulations to trace the complete evolution of the unstable beam-plasma system for a generic narrow Gaussian pair beam for which the growth rate is reactive. We show that the instability leads to an energetic broadening of the pair beam, slowing down the instability growth in the linear phase, in line with the analytical and numerical solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation. Whereas in a laboratory experiment the change in the momentum distribution is an easily measured observable as a feedback of the instability, the consequence of diffusive broadening in an astrophysical scenario can be translated to an increase in the opening angle of the pair beam., 20 pages, 10 figures

The physical connection between thermal convection in the solar interior and the solar wind remains unclear due to their significant scale separation. Using an extended version of the three-dimensional radiative magnetohydrodynamic code RAMENS, we perform the first comprehensive simulation of the solar wind formation, starting from the wave excitation and the small-scale dynamo below the photosphere. The simulation satisfies various observational constraints as a slow solar wind emanating from the coronal hole boundary. The magnetic energy is persistently released in the simulated corona, showing a hot upward flow at the interface between open and closed fields. To evaluate the energetic contributions from Alfv\'en wave and interchange reconnection, we develop a new method to quantify the cross-field energy transport in the simulated atmosphere. The measured energy transport from closed coronal loops to open field accounts for approximately half of the total. These findings suggest a significant role of the supergranular-scale interchange reconnection in solar wind formation., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Shock waves are common in astrophysical environments. On many occasions, they are collisionless, which means they occur in settings where the mean free path is much larger than the dimensions of the system. For this very reason, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) is not equipped to deal with such shocks, be it because it assumes binary collisions, hence temperature isotropy, when such isotropy is not guaranteed in the absence of collisions. Here we solve a model capable of dealing with perpendicular shocks with anisotropic upstream pressure. The system of MHD conservation equations is closed assuming the temperature normal to the flow is conserved at the crossing of the shock front. In the strong shock sonic limit, the behavior of a perpendicular shock with isotropic upstream is retrieved, regardless of the upstream anisotropy. Generally speaking, a rich variety of behaviors is found, inaccessible to MHD, depending on the upstream parameters. The space environment in which planets are embedded depends mainly on the host star and impacts the evolution of the planetary atmosphere. The quiet M dwarf GJ 436 hosts a close-in hot Neptune which is known to feature a comet-like tail of hydrogen atoms escaped from its atmosphere due to energetic stellar irradiation. Understanding such star-planet interactions is essential to shed more light on planet formation and evolution theories, in particular the scarcity of Neptune-size planets below 3 d orbital period, also known as ``Neptune desert''. We aimed at characterising the stellar environment around GJ 436, which requires an accurate knowledge of the stellar magnetic field. The latter is studied efficiently with spectropolarimetry, since it is possible to recover the geometry of the large-scale magnetic field by applying tomographic inversion on time series of circularly polarised spectra. We used spectropolarimetric data collected in the optical domain with Narval in 2016 to compute the longitudinal magnetic field, examine its periodic content via Lomb-Scargle periodogram and Gaussian Process Regression analysis, and finally reconstruct the large-scale field configuration by means of Zeeman-Doppler Imaging. We found an average longitudinal field of -12 G and a stellar rotation period of 46.6 d using a Gaussian Process model and 40.1 d using Zeeman-Doppler Imaging, both consistent with the literature. The Lomb-Scargle analysis did not reveal any significant periodicity. The reconstructed large-scale magnetic field is predominantly poloidal, dipolar and axisymmetric, with a mean strength of 16 G. FOXSI is a direct-imaging, hard X-ray (HXR) telescope optimized for solar flare observations. It detects hot plasma and energetic electrons in and near energy release sites in the solar corona via bremsstrahlung emission, measuring both spatial structure and particle energy distributions. It provides two orders of magnitude faster imaging spectroscopy than previously available, probing physically relevant timescales (, White paper submitted to the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024-2033; 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

The transverse radiation pressure force and acceleration is compared for two parametrically optimized designs: prismatic and two-pillar metasurface gratings. The numerical results were cross-verified with both Maxwell stress tensor and modal analysis. Solar blackbody irradiance was assumed for wavelengths ranging from 0.33 [um] to the grating cutoff at 1.5 [um], encompassing 83% of the solar constant. This multi-objective optimizer study found that neither design comprised Si3N4 performed as well as those corresponding to a low refractive index, low mass density material. The perspectives of detecting the general relativistic gravitomagnetic Lense-Thirring effect on the orbits of the Galilean moons of Jupiter induced by the angular momentum ${\boldsymbol{S}}$ of the latter are preliminarily investigated. Numerical integrations over one century show that the expected gravitomagnetic signatures of the directly observable right ascension $\alpha$ and declination $\delta$ of the satellites are as large as tens of arcseconds for Io, while for Callisto they drop to the $\simeq 0.2\,\mathrm{arcseconds}$ level. Major competing effects due to the mismodeling in the zonal multipoles $J_\ell,\,\ell=2,\,3,\,4,\,\ldots$ of the Jovian non-spherically symmetric gravity field and in the Jupiter's spin axis ${\boldsymbol{\hat{k}}}$ should have a limited impact, especially in view of the future improvements in determining such parameters expected after the completion of the ongoing Juno mission in the next few years. On the other hand, the masses of the satellites, responsible of their mutual $N-$body perturbations, should be known better than now. Such a task should be accomplished with the future JUICE and Clipper missions to the Jovian system. Present-day accuracy in knowing the orbits of the Jovian Galilean satellites is of the order of 10 milliarcseconds, to be likely further improved thanks to the ongoing re-reduction of old photographic plates. This suggests that, in the next future, the Lense-Thirring effect in the main Jovian system of moons might be detectable with dedicated data reductions in which the gravitomagnetic field is explicitly modeled and solved-for., Comment: LaTex2e, 20 pages, 4 figures, no tables. Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) is an established technique providing very accurate position measurements of satellites in Earth orbit. However, despite decades of development, it remains a complex and expensive technology, which impedes its further growth to new applications and users. The miniSLR implements a complete SLR system within a small, transportable enclosure. Through this design, costs of ownership can be reduced significantly, and the process of establishing a new SLR site is greatly simplified. A number of novel technical solutions have been implemented to achieve a good laser ranging performance despite the small size and simplified design. Data from the initial six months of test operation has been used to generate a first estimation of the system performance. The data includes measurements to many of the important SLR satellites, such as Lageos, Etalon and most of the geodetic and Earth observation missions in LEO. It is shown that the miniSLR achieves sub-centimetre accuracy, comparable with conventional SLR systems. The miniSLR is an engineering station in the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), and supplies data to the community. We examine the origin of electrons in a weakly outgassing comet, using Rosetta mission data and a 3D collisional model of electrons at a comet. We have calculated a new dataset of electron-impact ionization (EII) frequency throughout the Rosetta escort phase, with measurements of the Rosetta Plasma Consortium's Ion and Electron Sensor (RPC/IES). The EII frequency is evaluated in 15-minute intervals and compared to other Rosetta datasets. Electron-impact ionization is the dominant source of electrons at 67P away from perihelion and is highly variable (by up to three orders of magnitude). Around perihelion, EII is much less variable and less efficient than photoionization at Rosetta. Several drivers of the EII frequency are identified, including magnetic field strength and the outgassing rate. Energetic electrons are correlated to the Rosetta-upstream solar wind potential difference, confirming that the ionizing electrons are solar wind electrons accelerated by an ambipolar field. The collisional test particle model incorporates a spherically symmetric, pure water coma and all the relevant electron-neutral collision processes. Electric and magnetic fields are stationary model inputs, and are computed using a fully-kinetic, collisionless Particle-in-Cell simulation. Collisional electrons are modelled at outgassing rates of $Q=10^{26}$ s$^{-1}$ and $Q=1.5\times10^{27}$ s$^{-1}$. Secondary electrons are the dominant population within a weakly outgassing comet. These are produced by collisions of solar wind electrons with the neutral coma. It is essential that there be coordinated and co-optimized observations in X-rays, gamma-rays, and EUV during the peak of solar cycle 26 (~2036) to significantly advance our understanding of impulsive energy release in the corona. The open questions include: What are the physical origins of space-weather events? How are particles accelerated at the Sun? How is impulsively released energy transported throughout the solar atmosphere? How is the solar corona heated? Many of the processes involved in triggering, driving, and sustaining solar eruptive events -- including magnetic reconnection, particle acceleration, plasma heating, and energy transport in magnetized plasmas -- also play important roles in phenomena throughout the Universe. We present an efficient dimension-by-dimension finite-volume method which solves the adiabatic magnetohydrodynamics equations at high discretization order, using the constrained-transport approach on Cartesian grids. Results are presented up to tenth order of accuracy. This method requires only one reconstructed value per face for each computational cell. A passage through high-order point values leads to a modest growth of computational cost with increasing discretization order. At a given resolution, these high-order schemes present significantly less numerical dissipation than commonly employed lower-order approaches. Thus, results of comparable accuracy are achievable at a substantially coarser resolution, yielding overall performance gains. We also present a way to include physical dissipative terms: viscosity, magnetic diffusivity and cooling functions, respecting the finite-volume and constrained-transport frameworks., Submitted to JCP
