In this report, the experimental matrices for SEG and SEDMES tests are presented, determined based on the experience gained on the SEG and SEDMES process at the current stage of the project. The range of operating conditions defined in the experimental matrices is summarized in the following tables for SEG and SEDMES processes respectively.The measurements to be carried out in the experimental campaigns are also indicated. Thermo-chemical conversion of lignin-rich biomass to SNG (Synthetic Natural Gas) is commonly done by allothermal steam gasification at temperatures exceeding 700 °C and subsequent methanation of the syngas at temperatures down to 300 °C. Whereas the gasification is endothermic, the strongly exothermic methanation reaction requires heat dissipation. But that methanation heat cannot readily be used for the endothermic gasification, due to the difference in temperature. However, the heat released during methanation accounts for up to 20% of the biomass’ initial energy content (HHV), and leads thus to a considerable reduction of the conversion efficiency. Innovative process concepts were developed to overcome this issue by integrating the methanation directly into the gasification process. The theoretical effect of measures which allow increasing the methane yield at already high gasification temperatures, which means combined gasification and methanation, are explained. They have the theoretical potential to boost the conversion efficiency up to about 95%. A continuously operated high pressure gasification test reactor is to be built to experimentally investigate the actual feasible optimization potential and the technical feasibility. One of the major obstacles for the application of biomass gasification systems is the relatively high tar content of the product gas that inhibits the use in engines or turbines or in further processes like in methanisation or conversion to other secondary fuels or chemicals without further gas cleaning. The determination of the tar content with conventional standard methods is very time consuming and does not allow continuous online monitoring of the gas quality. One approach to avoid these drawbacks is an automatic system that monitors the tar concentration in the producer gas online during the gasification process. Such a system, based on a FID (flame ionization detector), was developed at IFK in the past with the final goal of commercialization. To show its accuracy, the comparability of the online measured values with the standard method DIN CEN/TS 15439 and its robustness in continuous operation, comparative measurements at different settings at an electrically heated 20 kWth lab scale gasifier at IFK over several hours have been performed and the results were compared to each other. The results show a stable operation of the gasifier and therefore also tar production and its detection with the online system. Furthermore, comparison of the results from both measurement techniques shows good agreement.
