1. Decoupling of graphene from Ni(111) via oxygen intercalation

Abstract

The combination of the surface science techniques (STM, XPS, ARPES) and density-functional theory calculations was used to study the decoupling of graphene from Ni(111) by oxygen intercalation. The formation of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO layer at the interface between graphene and ferromagnetic (FM) Ni is found, where graphene protects the underlying AFM/FM sandwich system. It is found that graphene is fully decoupled in this system and strongly $p$-doped via charge transfer with a position of the Dirac point of $(0.69\pm0.02)$ eV above the Fermi level. Abstract

Abstract. The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

A simultaneous deployment of Doppler, temperature, and water-vapor lidars is able to provide profiles of molecular destruction rates and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation in the convective boundary layer (CBL). Horizontal wind profiles and profiles of vertical wind, temperature, and moisture fluctuations are combined, and transversal temporal autocovariance functions (ACFs) are determined for deriving the dissipation and molecular destruction rates. These are fundamental loss terms in the TKE as well as the potential temperature and mixing ratio variance equations. These ACFs are fitted to their theoretical shapes and coefficients in the inertial subrange. Error bars are estimated by a propagation of noise errors. Sophisticated analyses of the ACFs are performed in order to choose the correct range of lags of the fits for fitting their theoretical shapes in the inertial subrange as well as for minimizing systematic errors due to temporal and spatial averaging and micro- and mesoscale circulations. We demonstrate that we achieve very consistent results of the derived profiles of turbulent variables regardless of whether 1 or 10 s time resolutions are used. We also show that the temporal and spatial length scales of the fluctuations in vertical wind, moisture, and potential temperature are similar with a spatial integral scale of ≈160 m at least in the mixed layer (ML). The profiles of the molecular destruction rates show a maximum in the interfacial layer (IL) and reach values of ϵm≃7×10-4 g 2 kg -2 s -1 for mixing ratio and ϵθ≃1.6×10-3 K 2 s -1 for potential temperature. In contrast, the maximum of the TKE dissipation is reached in the ML and amounts to ≃10-2 m 2 s -3. We also demonstrate that the vertical wind ACF coefficient kw∝w′2‾ and the TKE dissipation ϵ∝w′2‾3/2. For the molecular destruction rates, we show that ϵm∝m′2‾w′2‾1/2 and ϵθ∝θ′2‾w′2‾1/2. These equations can be used for parameterizations of ϵ , ϵm , and ϵθ. All noise error bars are derived by error propagation and are small enough to compare the results with previous observations and large-eddy simulations. The results agree well with previous observations but show more detailed structures in the IL. Consequently, the synergy resulting from this new combination of active remote sensors enables the profiling of turbulent variables such as integral scales, variances, TKE dissipation, and the molecular destruction rates as well as deriving relationships between them. Abstract

We present well-ordered Pt nanocluster arrays supported on the h-BN/Rh(111) Moiré as a model system for an ethylene dehydrogenation catalyst. Thereby, the h-BN nanomesh serves as a chemically inert eggbox-like template for clusters with a narrow size distribution. The thermal evolution of ethylene is investigated by synchrotron-based high-resolution in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on the Pt nanoclusters. We compare our results with data on Pt(111) and Pt(355). Interestingly, the Pt nanoclusters and Pt(355) behave very similarly. Both open a new reaction pathway via vinylidene in addition to the route via ethylidyne known for Pt(111). Due to the importance of coking in ethylene dehydrogenation on Pt catalysts, we also studied C2H4 adsorption and decomposition on carbon precovered Pt nanoclusters. While the amount of adsorbed ethylene decreases linearly with the carbon coverage, we found that edge sites are more affected than facet sites and that the vinylidene reaction pathway is effectively suppressed by carbon residues. Abstract

Among other N-heterocycles, indole and its substituted derivatives, such as methylindoles, are considered promising Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers (LOHCs) for the storage of renewable energy. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), temperature programmed desorption (TPD), and density-functional theory (DFT) to investigate the low temperature adsorption and consecutive dehydrogenation reaction during heating of 2-methylindole, 2-methylindoline, and 2-methyloctahydroindole on Pt(111) and their viability as the LOHC system. In the photoemission experiments, for all Hx-2-methylindoles, we find deprotonation at the NH bond starting between 240 and 300 K, resulting in a 2-methylindolide species. Simultaneously or before this reaction step, the dehydrogenation of 2-methyloctahydroindole via 2-methylindoline and 2-methylindole intermediates is observed. For 2-methyloctahydroindole, we also find π-allyl intermediates above 230 K. Starting at ∼390 K, decomposition of the remaining 2-methylindolide species takes place under the conditions of our surface science experiments. DFT calculations give insight into the relative energies of the various species, reaction intermediates, and their isomers both in the gas phase and on the Pt(111) surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Together with borazine, ammonia borane is a prominent precursor molecule for the formation of hexagonal boron nitride, which is of high interest as a 2D-material and graphene analog. Ammonia borane is also a possible solid hydrogen carrier for renewable energies with high storage density. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption, we investigated low-temperature adsorption and dehydrogenation during heating of borazine and ammonia borane on Ni(111) to form h-BN. For borazine, we observe the formation of disordered boron nitride above 300 K, which starts to form hexagonal boron nitride above 600 K. Ammonia borane shows multiple dehydrogenation steps at the boron and nitrogen atoms up to 300 K. This results in various BHxNHy species, including borazine-like intermediates, before the formation of disordered boron nitride and finally hexagonal boron nitride, analogous to the borazine decomposition. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

In this study, we present multi-season measurements from a remote mountain peak observatory in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). During the campaign, Doppler lidar and cloud radar were employed using coordinated scan patterns, to study seedable convective clouds, and identify pre-convection initiation clear-air signatures. The instruments were employed for approximately two years in an extreme environment with a high vantage point for observing valley wind flows and convective cells. The instruments were configured to run synchronized plan position indicator (PPI) scans at 0°, 5°, and 45° elevation angles and vertical cross-section range height indicator (RHI) scans at 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 120°, and 150° azimuth angles. Using this output imagery, along with local C‑band radar and satellite data, we were able to identify and analyse several convective cases. To illustrate this synergy of measurements, we present two cases in unstable conditions – the 5 and 6 September 2018. In both cases, we observed areas of convergence/divergence to the south-west of the observatory, associated with wind flow around a peak 2 km to the south-west. The extension of these deformations were visible in the atmosphere as high as 3 km above sea level. Subsequently, we observed convective cells developing in the same directions – apparently connected with these phenomena. The cloud radar Doppler images provided detailed observations of cloud hydrometeor dynamics. In both convective cases, pre-convective signatures were apparent before CI, in the form of convergence, wind shear structures, and updrafts. These results demonstrate the potential of these synergetic observations for understanding convection initiation processes and in the future, to provide cloud seeding guidance via early detection of CI events.
