We present a new method aimed at improving the efficiency of component by component ionization modeling of intervening quasar absorption line systems. We carry out cloud-by-cloud, multiphase modeling making use of CLOUDY and Bayesian methods to extract physical properties from an ensemble of absorption profiles. Here, as a demonstration of method, we focus on four weak, low ionization absorbers at low redshift, because they are multi-phase but relatively simple to constrain. We place errors on the inferred metallicities and ionization parameters for individual clouds, and show that the values differ from component to component across the absorption profile. Our method requires user input on the number of phases and relies on an optimized transition for each phase, one observed with high resolution and signal-to-noise. The measured Doppler parameter of the optimized transition provides a constraint on the Doppler parameter of HI, thus providing leverage in metallicity measurements even when hydrogen lines are saturated. We present several tests of our methodology, demonstrating that we can recover the input parameters from simulated profiles. We also consider how our model results are affected by which radiative transitions are covered by observations (for example how many HI transitions) and by uncertainties in the b parameters of optimized transitions. We discuss the successes and limitations of the method, and consider its potential for large statistical studies. Lyman$-\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) emission lines are typically found to be redshifted with respect to the systemic redshifts of galaxies, likely due to resonant scattering of Ly$\alpha$ photons. Here we measure the average velocity offset for a sample of 96 $z\approx3.3$ Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) with a median Ly$\alpha$ flux (luminosity) of $\approx 10^{-17}~\rm erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ ($\approx10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$) and a median star formation rate (SFR) of $\approx1.3 \rm M_{\odot} yr^{-1}$ (not corrected for possible dust extinction), detected by the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer as part of our MUSEQuBES circumgalactic medium (CGM) survey. By postulating that the stacked CGM absorption profiles of these LAEs, probed by 8 background quasars, must be centered on the systemic redshift, we measure an average velocity offset, V$_{\rm offset} = 171 \pm 8$ $\rm km s^{-1}$, between the Ly$\alpha$ emission peak and the systemic redshift. The observed V$_{\rm offset}$ is lower by factors of $\approx1.4$ and $\approx2.6$ compared to the velocity offsets measured for narrow-band selected LAEs and Lyman break galaxies, respectively, which probe galaxies with higher masses and SFRs. Consistent with earlier studies based on direct measurements for individual objects, we find that the V$_{\rm offset}$ is correlated with the full width at half-maximum of the red peak of the Ly$\alpha$ line, and anti-correlated with the rest-frame equivalent width. Moreover, we find that $V_{\rm offset}$ is correlated with SFR with a sub-linear scaling relation, V$_{\rm offset}\propto \rm SFR^{0.16\pm0.03}$. Adopting the mass scaling for main sequence galaxies, such a relation suggests that V$_{\rm offset}$ scales with the circular velocity of the dark matter halos hosting the LAEs., Comment: Published on 15 May, 2020 along with an erratum (Ref: MNRAS 498, 4424, 2020, doi:10.1093/mnras/staa2668), since Fig. 2 has not been updated in the published version. We built the first-ever statistically significant sample of ~ 80,000 background quasar - foreground cluster pairs to study the cool, metal-rich gas in the outskirts (> R500) of z ~ 0.5 clusters with a median mass of ~ 10^14.2 M_sun. The sample was obtained by cross-matching the SDSS cluster catalog of Wen & Han (2015) and SDSS quasar catalog of Lyke et al. (2020). The median impact parameter (rho_cl) of the clusters from the quasar sightlines is 2.4 Mpc (median rho_cl/R500 = 3.6). A strong MgII, along with marginal FeII, absorption is detected in the mean and median stacked spectra of the quasars with total MgII rest-frame equivalent width (W^(2796+2803)) of 0.034 pm 0.005 A (7simga) and 0.010 pm 0.003 A (3sigma), respectively. The W^(2796+2803) shows a declining trend with increasing rho_cl and rho_cl/R500, but does not show any significant trend with mass (M500) or redshift (zcl) within the small M500 and zcl ranges probed here. The MgII absorption signal and the trends persist even if we exclude the quasar-cluster pairs where the background quasars may be probing the circum-galactic medium (CGM) of bright galaxies with impact parameters < 300 kpc. The MgII (and FeII) absorption reported here is the first detection of its kind. It indicates the presence of a cool, metal-rich gas reservoir surrounding galaxy clusters out to several R500. We suggest that the metal-rich gas in the cluster outskirts arise from stripped materials and that gas stripping may be important out to large clustocentric distances (> 3R500 )., Accepted in ApJ

Using the MEGAFLOW survey, which consists of a combination of MUSE and UVES observations of 22 quasar fields selected to contain strong MgII absorbers, we measure covering fractions of CIV and MgII as a function of impact parameter $b$ using a novel Bayesian logistic regression method on unbinned data, appropriate for small samples. We also analyse how the CIV and MgII covering fractions evolve with redshift. In the MUSE data, we found 215 $z=1-1.5$ [OII] emitters with fluxes $>10^{-17}$ erg\,s$^{-1}$\,cm$^{-2}$ and within 250 kpc of quasar sight-lines. Over this redshift path $z=1-1.5$, we have 19 (32) CIV (MgII) absorption systems with rest-frame equivalent width (REW) $W_r>$0.05�� associated with at least one [OII] emitter. The covering fractions of $z\approx1.2$ CIV (MgII) absorbers with mean $W_r\approx$0.7�� (1.0��), exceeds 50\% within 23$^{+62}_{-16}$ (46$^{+18}_{-13}$) kpc. Together with published studies, our results suggest that the covering fraction of CIV (MgII) becomes larger (smaller) with time, respectively. For absorption systems that have CIV but not MgII, we find in 73\% of the cases no [OII] counterpart. This may indicate that the CIV comes from the intergalactic medium (IGM), i.e. beyond 250 kpc, or that it is associated with lower-mass or quiescent galaxies., 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an ultraviolet quasar absorption line analysis of metal lines associated with three strong intervening H I absorbers (with $N$(H I) $>$ 10$^{16.5}$ cm$^{-2}$) detected in the outskirts of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect-selected galaxy clusters ($z_{\rm cl} \sim 0.4 - 0.5$), within clustocentric impact parameters of $��_{cl}$ $\sim$ $(1.6 - 4.7)r_{500}$. Discovered in a recent set of targeted far-UV $HST$/COS spectroscopic observations, these absorbers have the highest H I column densities ever observed in the outskirts of galaxy clusters, and are also rich in metal absorption lines. Photoionization models yield single phase solutions for the three absorbers with gas densities of $n_{H} \sim 10^{-3} - 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$ and metallicities of [X/H] $>$ -1.0 (from one-tenth solar to near-solar). The widths of detected absorption lines suggest gas temperatures of $T \sim 10^4$ K. The inferred densities (temperatures) are significantly higher (lower) compared to the X-ray emitting intracluster medium in cluster cores. The absorbers are tracing a cool phase of the intracluster gas in the cluster outskirts, either associated with gas stripped from cluster galaxies via outflows, tidal streams or ram-pressure forces, or denser regions within the intracluster medium that were uniformly chemically enriched from an earlier epoch of enhanced supernova and AGN feedback., 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Using $HST$/COS observations of the twin quasar lines of sight Q$0107-025$A $\&$ Q$0107-025$B, we report on the physical properties, chemical abundances and transverse sizes of gas in a multiple galaxy environment at $z = 0.399$ across a transverse separation of $520$ kpc. The absorber towards Q$0107-025$B has $\log N(H I)/cm^{-2} \approx 16.8$ (partial Lyman limit) while the absorber towards the other sightline has $N(H I) \approx 2$ dex lower. The O VI along both sightlines have comparable column densities and broad $b$-values, whereas the low ionization lines are considerably narrower. The low ionization gas is inconsistent with the O VI when modelled assuming photoionization in a single phase. Along both the lines-of-sight, O VI and coinciding broad H I are best explained through collisional ionization in a cooling plasma with solar metallicity. Ionization models infer $1/10$-th solar metallicity for the pLLS and solar metallicity for the lower column density absorber along the other sightline. Within $\pm~250~km~s^{-1}$ and $2$ Mpc of projected distance from the sightlines 12 galaxies are identified, of which 3 are within $300$ kpc. One of them is a dwarf galaxy while the other two are intermediate mass systems at impact parameters of $��\sim (1-4)R_{vir}$. The O VI along both lines-of-sight could be either tracing narrow transition temperature zones at the interface of low ionization gas and the hot halo of nearest galaxy, or a more spread-out warm gas bound to the circumgalactic halo/intragroup medium. We investigate whether the dust content of the circum-galactic medium (CGM) depends on the location of the quasar sightline with respect to the galaxy major-axis using 13 galaxy-MgII absorber pairs (9 - 81 kpc distance) from the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey at 0.4 < z < 1.4. The dust content of the CGM is obtained from [Zn/Fe] using Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) data. When a direct measurement of [Zn/Fe] is unavailable, we estimate the dust depletion from a method which consists in solving for the depletion from multiple singly ionized ions (e.g. MnII, CrII, ZnII) since each ion depletes on dust grains at different rates. We find a positive correlation between the azimuthal angle and [Zn/Fe] with a Pearson's r = 0.70 +/- 0.14. The sightlines along the major axis show [Zn/Fe] < 0.5, whereas the [Zn/Fe] is > 0.8 along the minor axis. These results suggest that the CGM along the minor axis is on average more metal enriched (by ~ 1 dex) than the gas located along the major axis of galaxies provided that dust depletion is a proxy for metallicity. We use adaptive mesh refinement cosmological simulations to study the spatial distribution and covering fraction of OVI absorption in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) as a function of projected virial radius and azimuthal angle. We compare these simulations to an observed sample of 53 galaxies from the Multiphase Galaxy Halos Survey. Using Mockspec, an absorption line analysis pipeline, we generate synthetic quasar absorption line observations of the simulated CGM. To best emulate observations, we studied the averaged properties of 15,000 "mock samples" each of 53 sightlines having a distribution of $D/R_{vir}$ and sightline orientation statistically consistent with the observations. We find that the OVI covering fraction obtained for the simulated galaxies agrees well with the observed value for the inner halo ($D/R_{vir} \leq 0.375$) and is within $1.1σ$ in the outer halo ($D/R_{vir} > 0.75$), but is underproduced within $0.375 < D/R_{vir} \leq 0.75$. The observed bimodal distribution of OVI covering fraction with azimuthal angle, showing higher frequency of absorption along the projected major and minor axes of galaxies, is not reproduced in the simulations. Further analysis reveals the spatial-kinematic distribution of OVI absorbing gas is dominated by outflows in the inner halo mixed with a inflowing gas that originates from further out in the halo. Though the CGM of the individual simulated galaxies exhibit spatial structure, the flat azimuthal distribution occurs because the individual simulated galaxies do not develop a CGM structure that is universal from galaxy to galaxy., Accepted on December 1, 2020 for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We present an analysis of the galaxy environment and physical properties of a partial Lyman limit system at z = 0.83718 with HI and metal line components closely separated in redshift space ($|\Delta v| \approx 400$ km/s) towards the background quasar HE1003+0149. The HST/COS far-ultraviolet spectrum provides coverage of lines of oxygen ions from OI to OV. Comparison of observed spectral lines with synthetic profiles generated from Bayesian ionization modeling reveals the presence of two distinct gas phases in the absorbing medium. The low-ionization phase of the absorber has sub-solar metallicities (1/10-th solar) with indications of [C/O] < 0 in each of the components. The OIV and OV trace a more diffuse higher-ionization medium with predicted HI column densities that are $\approx 2$ dex lower. The quasar field observed with VLT/MUSE reveals three dwarf galaxies with stellar masses of $M^* \sim 10^{8} - 10^{9}$ M$_\odot$, and with star formation rates of $\approx 0.5 - 1$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, at projected separations of $\rho/R_{\mathrm{vir}} \approx 1.8 - 3.0$ from the absorber. Over a wider field with projected proper separation of $\leq 5$ Mpc and radial velocity offset of $|\Delta v| \leq 1000$ km/s from the absorber, 21 more galaxies are identified in the $VLT$/VIMOS and Magellan deep galaxy redshift surveys, with 8 of them within $1$ Mpc and $500$ km/s, consistent with the line of sight penetrating a group of galaxies. The absorber presumably traces multiple phases of cool ($T \sim 10^4$ K) photoionized intragroup medium. The inferred [C/O] < 0 hints at preferential enrichment from core-collapse supernovae, with such gas displaced from one or more of the nearby galaxies, and confined to the group medium.

We present the first characterization of the circumgalactic medium of Ly α emitters (LAEs), using a sample of 96 z ≈ 3.3 LAEs detected with the VLT/MUSE in fields centred on eight bright background quasars. The LAEs have low Ly α luminosities ($\sim 10^{42}\, \text{erg}\, \text{s}^{-1}$) and star formation rates (SFRs) $\sim 1~\text{M}_\odot \, \text{yr}^{-1}$, which for main-sequence galaxies correspond to stellar masses of only $\sim 10^{8.6}\, \text{M}_\odot$. The median transverse distance between the LAEs and the quasar sightlines is 165 proper kpc (pkpc). We stacked the high-resolution quasar spectra and measured significant excess H i and C iv absorption near the LAEs out to 500 $\text{km}\, \text{s}^{-1}$ and at least ≈250 pkpc (corresponding to ≈7 virial radii). At $\lesssim 30~\text{km}\, \text{s}^{-1}$ from the galaxies, the median H i and C iv optical depths are enhanced by an order of magnitude. The absorption is significantly stronger around the ≈1/3 of our LAEs that are part of ‘groups’, which we attribute to the large-scale structures in which they are embedded. We do not detect any strong dependence of either the H i or C iv absorption on transverse distance (over the range ≈50–250 pkpc), redshift, or the properties of the Ly α emission line (luminosity, full width at half-maximum, or equivalent width). However, for H i, but not C iv, the absorption at $\lesssim 100\, \text{km}\, \text{s}^{-1}$ from the LAE does increase with the SFR. This suggests that LAEs surrounded by more H i tend to have higher SFRs.

We have obtained new observations of the absorption system at $z_\mathrm{abs}=0.48$ toward QSO Q0454-220, which we use to constrain its chemical and physical conditions. The system features metal-enriched gas and previously unknown low-metallicity gas detected $\sim 200 \, \mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ blueward of the metal-enriched gas. The low-metallicity gas is detected in multiple Lyman series lines but is not detected in any metal lines. Our analysis includes low-ionization (e.g., Fe II, Mg II) metal lines, high-ionization (e.g., C IV, O VI, N V) metal lines, and several Lyman series lines. We use new UV spectra taken with HST/COS along with data taken from HST/STIS, Keck/HIRES, and VLT/UVES. We find that the absorption system can be explained with a photoionized low-ionization phase with $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} \sim -0.5$ and $n_\mathrm{H} \sim 10^{-2.3} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, a photoionized high-ionization phase with a conservative lower limit of $-3.3 < \mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ and $n_\mathrm{H} \sim 10^{-3.8} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, and a low-metallicity component with a conservative upper limit of $\mathrm{[Fe/H]} < -2.5$ that may be photoionized or collisionally ionized. We suggest that the low-ionization phase may be due to cold-flow accretion via large-scale filamentary structure or due to recycled accretion while the high-ionization phase is the result of ancient outflowing material from a nearby galaxy. The low-metallicity component may come from pristine accretion. Using deep (11.2hr) VLT/MUSE data from the MEGAFLOW survey, we report the first detection of extended MgII emission from a galaxy's halo that is probed by a quasar sightline. The MgII $\lambda\lambda$ 2796,2803 emission around the $z = 0.702$ galaxy ($\log(M_*/\mathrm{M_\odot}) = 10.05^{+0.15}_{-0.11}$) is detected out to $\approx$25 kpc from the central galaxy and covers $1.0\times10^3$ kpc$^2$ above a surface brightness of $14\times10^{-19} \mathrm{erg} \mathrm{s}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}\,\mathrm{arcsec}^{-2}$ ($2 \sigma$; integrated over 1200 km s$^{-1}$ =19A and averaged over $1.5 \;\mathrm{arcsec}^2$). The MgII emission around this highly inclined galaxy ($\simeq$75 deg) is strongest along the galaxy's projected minor axis, consistent with the MgII gas having been ejected from the galaxy into a bi-conical structure. The quasar sightline, which is aligned with the galaxy's minor axis, shows strong MgII $\lambda$2796 absorption (EW$_0$ = 1.8A) at an impact parameter of 39kpc from the galaxy. Comparing the kinematics of both the emission and the absorption - probed with VLT/UVES -, to the expectation from a simple toy model of a bi-conical outflow, we find good consistency when assuming a relatively slow outflow ($v_\mathrm{out}= 130\;\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$). We investigate potential origins of the extended MgII emission using simple toy models. With continuum scattering models we encounter serious difficulties in explaining the luminosity of the MgII halo and in reconciling density estimates from emission and absorption. We explore how environment affects the metallicity of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) using 13 low mass galaxy groups (2-5 galaxies) at $\langle z_{abs}\rangle=0.25$ identified near background quasars. Using quasar spectra from HST/COS and from Keck/HIRES or VLT/UVES we measure column densities of, or determine limits on, CGM absorption lines. We use a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach with Cloudy to estimate metallicities of cool ($T\sim10^4$K) CGM gas within groups and compare them to CGM metallicities of 47 isolated galaxies. We present ISM and CGM metallicities for 25 absorption systems associated with isolated star-forming galaxies (=0.28) with 9.417.2) reside along the minor axis. This suggest N(HI) could be a useful indicator of accretion/outflows. We conclude that CGM is not well mixed, given the range of galaxy-CGM metallicities, and that metallicity at low redshift might not be a good tracer of CGM processes. Furthermore we should replace integrated line-of-sight, single phase, metallicities with multi-phase, cloud-cloud metallicities, which could be more indicative of the physical processes within the CGM., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. We present an analysis of HI Lyman-alpha emission in deep VLT/MUSE observations of two highly magnified and extended galaxies at z=3.5 and 4.03, including a newly discovered, almost complete Einstein ring. While these Lyman-alpha haloes are intrinsically similar to the ones typically seen in other MUSE deep fields, the benefits of gravitational lensing allows us to construct exceptionally detailed maps of Lyman-alpha line properties at sub-kpc scales. By combining all multiple images, we are able to observe complex structures in the Lyman-alpha emission and uncover small (~ 120 km/s in Lyman-alpha peak shift), but significant at > 4 sigma, systematic variations in the shape of the Lyman-alpha line profile within each halo. Indeed, we observe a global trend for the line peak shift to become redder at large radii, together with a strong correlation between the peak wavelength and line width. This systematic intrahalo variation is markedly similar to the object-to-object variations obtained from the integrated properties of recent large samples. Regions of high surface brightness correspond to relatively small line shifts, which could indicate that Lyman-alpha emission escapes preferentially from regions where the line profile has been less severely affected by scattering of Lyman-alpha photons., 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from our on-going MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey, which consists of 22 quasar lines-of-sight, each observed with the integral field unit (IFU) MUSE and the UVES spectrograph at the ESO Very Large Telescopes (VLT). The goals of this survey are to study the properties of the circum-galactic medium around $z\sim1$ star-forming galaxies. The absorption-line selected survey consists of 79 strong \MgII\ absorbers (with rest-frame equivalent width (REW)$\gtrsim$0.3\AA) and, currently, 86 associated galaxies within 100 projected~kpc of the quasar with stellar masses ($M_\star$) from $10^9$ to $10^{11}$ \msun. We find that the cool halo gas traced by \MgII\ is not isotropically distributed around these galaxies, as we show the strong bi-modal distribution in the azimuthal angle of the apparent location of the quasar with respect to the galaxy major-axis. This supports a scenario in which outflows are bi-conical in nature and co-exist with a coplanar gaseous structure extending at least up to 60 to 80 kpc. Assuming that absorbers near the minor axis probe outflows, the current MEGAFLOW sample allowed us to select 26 galaxy-quasar pairs suitable for studying winds. From this sample, using a simple geometrical model, we find that the outflow velocity only exceeds the escape velocity when $M_{\star}\lesssim 4\times10^9$~\msun, implying the cool material is likely to fall back except in the smallest halos. Finally, we find that the mass loading factor $\eta$, the ratio between the ejected mass rate and the star formation rate (SFR), appears to be roughly constant with respect to the galaxy mass., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures (+26 in the Appendix), accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present analysis on three intervening H I-C IV absorption systems tracing gas within galaxy group/cluster environments, identified in the $HST$/COS far-UV spectra of the background quasars PG $1148+549$ ($z_{abs}=0.00346$), SBS~$1122+594$ ($z_{abs}=0.00402$) and RXJ~$1230.8+0115$ ($z_{abs}=0.00574$). The ionization models are consistent with the origin of metal lines and H I from a cool and diffuse photoionized gas phase with $T \lesssim 4 \times 10^{4}$ K and $n_{\mathrm{H}} \lesssim 5 \times 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$. The three absorbers have $89$, $51$ and $17$ galaxies detected within $1$ Mpc and $|\Delta v| < 600$ km s$^{-1}$. The RXJ~$1230.8+0115$ sightline traces the outskirt regions of the Virgo cluster where the absorber is found to have super-solar metallicity. The detection of metal lines along with H I has enabled us to confirm the presence of cool, diffuse gas possibly enriched by outflows and tidal interactions in environments with significant galaxy density., Comment: Published in MNRAS, 19 pages, 10 figures

We present the first galaxy-OVI absorption kinematic study for 20 absorption systems (EW>0.1~{\AA}) associated with isolated galaxies (0.15$33^{\circ}$). OVI absorption along the galaxy major axis is not correlated with galaxy rotation kinematics, with only 1/10 systems that could be explained with rotation/accretion models. This is in contrast to co-rotation commonly observed for MgII absorption. OVI along the minor axis could be modeled by accelerating outflows but only for small opening angles, while the majority of the OVI is decelerating. Along both axes, stacked OVI profiles reside at the galaxy systemic velocity with the absorption kinematics spanning the entire dynamical range of their galaxies. The OVI found in AMR cosmological simulations exists within filaments and in halos of ~50 kpc surrounding galaxies. Simulations show that major axis OVI gas inflows along filaments and decelerates as it approaches the galaxy while increasing in its level of co-rotation. Minor axis outflows in the simulations are effective within 50-75 kpc beyond that they decelerate and fall back onto the galaxy. Although the simulations show clear OVI kinematic signatures they are not directly comparable to observations. When we compare kinematic signatures integrated through the entire simulated galaxy halo we find that these signatures are washed out due to full velocity distribution of OVI throughout the halo. We conclude that OVI alone does not serve as a useful kinematic indicator of gas accretion, outflows or star-formation and likely best probes the halo virial temperature., Comment: 24 pages, 21 figures, 4 tables. The well-known quasar SDSS J095253.83+011421.9 (J0952+0114) at z=3.02 has one of the most peculiar spectra discovered so far, showing the presence of narrow Ly$\alpha$ and broad metal emission lines. Although recent studies have suggested that a Proximate Damped Ly$\alpha$ system (PDLA) causes this peculiar spectrum, the origin of the gas associated with the PDLA is unknown. Here we report the results of MUSE observations that reveal a new giant ($\approx$ 100 physical kpc) Lyman $\alpha$ nebula. The detailed analysis of the Ly$\alpha$ velocity, velocity dispersion, and surface brightness profiles suggests that the J0952+0114 Ly$\alpha$ nebula shares similar properties of other QSO nebulae previously detected with MUSE, implying that the PDLA in J0952+0144 is covering only a small fraction of the QSO emission solid angle. We also detected bright and spectrally narrow CIV$\lambda$1550 and HeII$\lambda$1640 extended emission around J0952+0114 with velocity centroids similar to the peak of the extended and central narrow Ly$\alpha$ emission. The presence of a peculiarly bright, unresolved, and relatively broad HeII$\lambda$1640 emission in the central region at exactly the same PDLA redshift hints at the possibility that the PDLA originates in a clumpy outflow with a bulk velocity of about 500 km/s. The smaller velocity dispersion of the large scale Ly$\alpha$ emission suggests that the high-speed outflow is confined to the central region. Lastly, the derived spatially resolved HeII/Ly$\alpha$ and CIV/Ly$\alpha$ maps show a positive gradient with the distance to the QSO hinting at a non-homogeneous ionization parameter distribution., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures and 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We use the MusE GAs FLOw and Wind (MEGAFLOW) survey to study the kinematics of extended disk-like structures of cold gas around $z\approx1$ star-forming galaxies. The combination of VLT/MUSE and VLT/UVES observations allows us to connect the kinematics of the gas measured through MgII quasar absorption spectroscopy to the kinematics and orientation of the associated galaxies constrained through integral field spectroscopy. Confirming previous results, we find that the galaxy-absorber pairs of the MEGAFLOW survey follow a strong bimodal distribution, consistent with a picture of MgII absorption being predominantly present in outflow cones and extended disk-like structures. This allows us to select a bona-fide sample of galaxy-absorber pairs probing these disks for impact parameters of 10-70 kpc. We test the hypothesis that the disk-like gas is co-rotating with the galaxy disks, and find that for 7 out of 9 pairs the absorption velocity shares the sign of the disk velocity, disfavouring random orbits. We further show that the data are roughly consistent with inflow velocities and angular momenta predicted by simulations, and that the corresponding mass accretion rates are sufficient to balance the star formation rates., 22 pages + Supplementary Appendix (15 pages); submitted to MNRAS; version after addressing referee's comments

Recent theoretical models suggest that the early phase of galaxy formation could involve an epoch when galaxies are gas-rich but inefficient at forming stars: a "dark galaxy" phase. Here, we report the results of our MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) survey for dark galaxies fluorescently illuminated by quasars at $z>3$. Compared to previous studies which are based on deep narrow-band (NB) imaging, our integral field survey provides a nearly uniform sensitivity coverage over a large volume in redshift space around the quasars as well as full spectral information at each location. Thanks to these unique features, we are able to build control samples at large redshift distances from the quasars using the same data taken under the same conditions. By comparing the rest-frame equivalent width (EW$_{0}$) distributions of the Ly$\alpha$ sources detected in proximity to the quasars and in control samples, we detect a clear correlation between the locations of high EW$_{0}$ objects and the quasars. This correlation is not seen in other properties such as Ly$\alpha$ luminosities or volume overdensities, suggesting the possible fluorescent nature of at least some of these objects. Among these, we find 6 sources without continuum counterparts and EW$_{0}$ limits larger than $240\,\mathrm{\AA}$ that are the best candidates for dark galaxies in our survey at $z>3.5$. The volume densities and properties, including inferred gas masses and star formation efficiencies, of these dark galaxy candidates are similar to previously detected candidates at $z\approx2.4$ in NB surveys. Moreover, if the most distant of these are fluorescently illuminated by the quasar, our results also provide a lower limit of $t=60$ Myr on the quasar lifetime., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables, submitted to ApJ

We present a sample of 34 weak metal line absorbers at $z< 0.3$ complied via the simultaneous detections ($3\sigma$) of the SiII$\lambda1260$ and CII$\lambda1334$ absorption lines, with $W_{r}$(SiII)$5$. The column densities of HI and low-ionization metal lines obtained from Voigt profile fitting are used to build simple photoionization models using CLOUDY. The inferred densities and total hydrogen column densities are in the ranges of $-3.3 < \log n_{\rm H}/{\rm cm^{-3}} < -2.4$ and $16.0 < \log N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm^{-2}} -1.0$ (0.0). The fraction of systems showing high metallicity (i.e., $\rm [Si/H]>-1.0$) in our sample is significantly higher than the HI-selected sample (Wotta et al. 2016) and the galaxy-selected sample (Prochaska et al. 2017) of absorbers probing the circum-galactic medium (CGM) at similar redshift. A search for galaxies has revealed a significant galaxy-overdensity around these weak absorbers compared to random places with a median impact parameter of 166 kpc to the nearest galaxy. Moreover, we find the presence of multiple galaxies in $\sim80$% of the cases, suggesting group environments. The observed $d\mathcal{N}/dz$ of $0.8\pm0.2$ indicates that such metal-enriched, compact, dense structures are ubiquitous in the halos of low-$z$ galaxies that are in groups. International audience; Using an ultra-deep blind survey with the MUSE integral field spectrograph on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope, we obtain spectroscopic redshifts to a depth never before explored: galaxies with observed magnitudes m AB 30-32. Specifically, we detect objects via Lyα emission at 2.9

We have obtained new observations of the partial Lyman limit absorber at \zabs$=0.93$ towards quasar PG~1206+459, and revisit its chemical and physical conditions. The absorber, with $ N(HI) \sim 10^{17.0}$ ~\sqcm\ and absorption lines spread over $\gtrsim$1000~\kms\ in velocity, is one of the strongest known OVI absorbers at $\log N(OVI)=$15.54$\pm$0.17. Our analysis makes use of the previously known low-(e.g. \MgII), intermediate-(e.g. SiIV), and high-ionization (e.g., CIV, NV, NeVIII) metal lines along with new $HST/$COS observations that cover OVI, and an $HST/$ACS image of the quasar field. Consistent with previous studies, we find that the absorber has a multiphase structure. The low-ionization phase arises from gas with a density of $\log (n_{\rm H}/\rm cm^{-3})\sim-2.5$ and a solar to super-solar metallicity. The high-ionization phase stems from gas with a significantly lower density, i.e. $\log (n_{\rm H}/\rm cm^{-3}) \sim-3.8$, and a near-solar to solar metallicity. The high-ionization phase accounts for all of the absorption seen in CIV, NV, and OVI. We find the the detected \NeVIII, reported by \cite{Tripp2011}, is best explained as originating in a stand-alone collisionally ionized phase at $T\sim10^{5.85}~\rm K$, except in one component in which both OVI and NeVIII can be produced via photoionization. We demonstrate that such strong OVI absorption can easily arise from photoionization at $z\gtrsim1$, but that, due to the decreasing extragalactic UV background radiation, only collisional ionization can produce large OVI features at $z\sim0$. The azimuthal angle of $\sim88$\degree\ of the disk of the nearest ($\rm 68~kpc$) luminous ($1.3L_*$) galaxy at $z_{\rm gal}=0.9289$, which shows signatures of recent merger, suggests that the bulk of the absorption arises from metal enriched outflows., 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed analysis of a H2-bearing metal-rich sub-damped Lymansystem at zabs = 0.10115 towards the radio-loud quasar J0441 4313, at a projected separation of �7.6 kpc from a star-forming galaxy. The H2, C I and Na I absorption are much stronger in the redder of the two components seen in the Hubble Space Telescope / Cosmic Origins Spectro- graph spectrum. The best single component fit to the strong H2 component gives log N (H2) = 16.61 ± 0.05. However, possible hidden saturation in the medium resolution spectrum can allow for log N (H2) to be as high as 18.9. The rotational excitation temperatur e of H2 in this component is 133 +33 22 K. Photoionization models suggest 30-80% of the total N (H I) is associated with the strong H2 component, that has a density 6 100 cm 3 and is subject to a radiation field that is 6 0.5 times the Galactic mean field. The Very Large Baseline Arr ay 1.4 GHz continuum image of the radio source contains only 27% of the arcsecond scale emission. Using a previously published spectrum, no 21-cm absorption is found to be associated with the strong H2 component. This suggests that either the N (H I) associated with this component is 6 50% of the total N (H I) or the gas covering factor is 6 0.27. This is consistent with the results of the photoionization model that uses UV radiation due to stars in the associated galaxy. The 21-cm absorption previously reported from the weaker H2 component suggests a spin temperature of 6 90 K, at odds with the weakness of H2, C I and Na I absorption in this component. From the inferred physical and chemical conditions, we suggest that the gas may be tracing a recent metal-rich outflow from the host-galaxy.

To characterize the absorption properties of this circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its relation to the LG we present the so-far largest survey of metal absorption in Galactic high-velocity clouds (HVCs) using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra of extragalactic background sources. The UV data are obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and are supplemented by 21 cm radio observations of neutral hydrogen. Along 270 sightlines we measure metal absorption in the lines of SiII, SiIII, CII, and CIV and associated HI 21 cm emission in HVCs in the velocity range |v_LSR|=100-500 km s^-1. With this unprecedented large HVC sample we were able to improve the statistics on HVC covering fractions, ionization conditions, small-scale structure, CGM mass, and inflow rate. For the first time, we determine robustly the angular two point correlation function of the high-velocity absorbers, systematically analyze antipodal sightlines on the celestial sphere, and compare the absorption characteristics with that of Damped Lyman alpha absorbers (DLAs) and constrained cosmological simulations of the LG. Our study demonstrates that the Milky Way CGM contains sufficient gaseous material to maintain the Galactic star-formation rate at its current level. We show that the CGM is composed of discrete gaseous structures that exhibit a large-scale kinematics together with small-scale variations in physical conditions. The Magellanic Stream clearly dominates both the cross section and mass flow of high-velocity gas in the Milky Way's CGM. We report on the detection of two Ne VIII absorbers, at z = 0.61907 and z = 0.57052 in the HST/COS spectrum of background quasars SDSS J 080908.13+461925.6 and SBS 1122+594 respectively. The Ne VIII 770 line is at $\sim 3\sigma$ significance. In both instances, the NeVIII is found to be tracing gas with $T \gtrsim 10^5$ K, predominantly collisionally ionized, with moderate densities of $n_{H} \lesssim 10^{-4}$ $cm^{-3}$, sub-solar metallicities and total hydrogen column densities of $N(H) \gtrsim 10^{19}$ $cm^{2}$. In the z = 0.61907 absorber, the low, intermediate ions and O VI are consistent with origin in photoionized gas, with the O VI potentially having some contribution from the warm collisional phase traced by Ne VIII. The z = 0.57052 system has H I absorption in at least three kinematically distinct components, with one of them having $b (H I) = 49 {\pm} 11$ $km s^{-1}$. The intermediate ionization lines, O VI and Ne VIII are coincident in velocity with this component. Their different line widths suggest warm temperatures of $T = (0.5 - 1.5) \times 10^5$ K. Both absorbers are residing in regions where there are several luminous ($ \gtrsim L^*$) galaxies. The absorber at z = 0.57052 is within the virial radius of a $2.6L^*$ galaxy, possibly associated with shock heated circumgalactic material., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. We present a study comparing OVI $\lambda\lambda$1031, 1037 doublet absorption found towards group galaxy environments with that of isolated galaxies. The OVI absorption in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of isolated galaxies has been studied previously by the "Multiphase Galaxy Halos" survey, where the kinematics and absorption properties of the CGM have been investigated. We extend these studies to group environments. We define a galaxy group to have two or more galaxies having a line-of-sight velocity difference of no more than 1000 km/s and located within 350 kpc (projected) of a background quasar sightline. We identified a total of six galaxy groups associated with OVI absorption $W_{\rm r}>0.06$ {\AA} that have a median redshift of $\langle z_{\rm gal} \rangle = 0.1669$ and a median impact parameter of $\langle D \rangle = 134.1$ kpc. An additional 12 non-absorbing groups were identified with a median redshift of $\langle z_{\rm gal} \rangle = 0.2690$ and a median impact parameter of $\langle D \rangle = 274.0$ kpc. We find the average equivalent width to be smaller for group galaxies than for isolated galaxies $(3\sigma)$. However, the covering fractions are consistent with both samples. We used the pixel-velocity two-point correlation function method and find that the velocity spread of OVI in the CGM of group galaxies is significantly narrower than that of isolated galaxies $(10\sigma)$. We suggest that the warm/hot CGM does not exist as a superposition of halos, instead, the virial temperature of the halo is hot enough for OVI to be further ionised. The relationship between galaxies and the state/chemical enrichment of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) expected to dominate the baryon budget at low-z provides sensitive constraints on structure formation and galaxy evolution models. We present a deep redshift survey in the field of 1ES1553+113, a blazar with a unique combination of UV+X-ray spectra for surveys of the circum-/intergalactic medium (CGM/IGM). Nicastro et al. 2018 reported the detection of two O VII WHIM absorbers at $z=0.4339$ and $0.3551$ in its spectrum, suggesting that the WHIM is metal-rich and sufficient to close the missing baryons problem. Our survey indicates that the blazar is a member of a $z=0.433$ group and that the higher-$z$ O VII candidate arises from its intragroup medium. The resulting bias precludes its use in baryon censuses. The $z=0.3551$ candidate occurs in an isolated environment 630 kpc from the nearest galaxy (with stellar mass $\log M_*/M_\odot \approx 9.7$) which we show is unexpected for the WHIM. Finally, we characterize the galactic environments of broad H I Ly$\alpha$ absorbers (Doppler widths of $b=40-80$ \kms; $T\lesssim4\times10^5$ K) which provide metallicity independent WHIM probes. On average, broad Ly$\alpha$, absorbers are ${\approx}2\times$ closer to the nearest luminous ($L>0.25 L_*$) galaxy (700 kpc) than narrow ($b, Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters; 10 pages, 4 figures, 1 table with the full version available on the journal webpage (or by request); v2 corrects one reference

We report on the detection of two O VI absorbers separated in velocity by 710 km/s at z ~ 0.4 towards the background quasar SBS0957+599. Both absorbers are multiphase systems tracing substantial reservoirs of warm baryons. The low and intermediate ionization metals in the first absorber is consistent with an origin in photoionized gas. The O VI has a velocity structure different from other metal species. The Ly-alpha shows the presence of a broad feature. The line widths for O VI and the broad Ly-alpha suggest T = 7.1 x 10^5 K. This warm medium is probing a baryonic column which is an order of magnitude more than the total hydrogen in the cooler photoionized gas. The second absorber is detected only in H I and O VI. Here the temperature of 4.6 x 10^4 K supports O VI originating in a low-density photoionized gas. A broad component is seen in the Ly-alpha, offset from the O VI. The temperature in the broad Ly-alpha is T < 2.1 x 10^5 K. The absorbers reside in a galaxy overdensity region with 7 spectroscopically identified galaxies within ~ 10 Mpc and delta_v ~ 1000 km/s of the first absorber, and 2 galaxies inside a similar separation from the second absorber. The distribution of galaxies relative to the absorbers suggest that the line of sight could be intercepting a large-scale filament connecting galaxy groups, or the extended halo of a sub-L* galaxy. Though kinematically proximate, the two absorbers reaffirm the diversity in the physical conditions of low redshift O VI systems and the galactic environments they inhabit., MNRAS Accepted. 16 pages, 9 figures

Ne VIII absorbers seen in QSO spectra are useful tracers of warm ionized gas, when collisional ionization is the dominant ionization process. While photoionization by the ultraviolet background (UVB) is a viable option, it tends to predict large line-of-sight thickness for the absorbing gas. Here, we study the implications of the recently updated UVB at low-z to understand the ionization mechanisms of intervening Ne VIII absorbers. With the updated UVB, one typically needs higher density and metallicity to reproduce the observed ionic column densities under photoionization. Both reduce the inferred line-of-sight thicknesses of the absorbers. We find a critical density of $\geq5\times10^{-5}$ cm$^{-3}$ above which the observed N(Ne VIII)/N(O VI) can be reproduced by pure collisional processes. If the gas is of near solar metallicity (as measured for the low ions) then the cooling timescales will be small (, Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We estimate the He II to H I column density ratio, \eta = N(He II)/N(H I), in the intergalactic medium towards the high redshift (z_{em} = 2.885) bright quasar QSO HE 2347-4342 using Voigt-profile fitting of the H I transitions in the Lyman series and the He II Lyman-$\alpha$ transition as observed by the FUSE satellite. In agreement with previous studies, we find that $\eta > 50$ in most of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest except in four regions where it is much smaller ($\eta \sim 10-20$) and therefore inconsistent with photo-ionization by the UV background flux. We detect O VI and C IV absorption lines associated with two of these regions ($z_{\rm abs}$ = 2.6346 and 2.6498). We show that if we constrain the fit of the H I and/or He II absorption profiles with the presence of metal components, we can accommodate $\eta$ values in the range 15-100 in these systems assuming broadening is intermediate between pure thermal and pure turbulent. While simple photo-ionization models reproduce the observed N(O VI)/N(C IV) ratio, they fail to produce low $\eta$ values contrary to models with high temperature (i.e T $\ge 10^5$ K). The Doppler parameters measured for different species suggest a multiphase nature of the absorbing regions. Therefore, if low $\eta$ values were to be confirmed, we would favor a multi-phase model in which most of the gas is at high temperature ($>$ 10$^5$ K) but the metals and in particular C IV are due to lower temperature ($\sim$ few $10^4$ K) photo-ionized gas.

We report on the first detection of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) absorption variability in the NeVIII 770,780 mini-broad absorption line (mini-BAL) in the spectrum of the quasar (QSO) PG 1206+459. The observed equivalent width (EW) of the NeVIII doublet show a ~4 sigma variation over a timescale of 2.8 months in the QSO's rest-frame. Both members of the NeVIII doublet exhibit non-black saturation, indicating partial coverage of the continuum source. An increase in the NeVIII covering fraction from f_c = 0.59\pm0.05 to 0.72\pm0.03 is observed over the same period. The NeVIII profiles are too highly saturated to be susceptible to changes in the ionization state of the absorbing gas. In fact, we do not observe any significant variation in the EW and/or column density after correcting the spectra for partial coverage. We, thus, propose transverse motions of the absorbing gas being the cause of the observed variability. Using a simple model of a transiting cloud we estimate a transverse speed of ~1800 km/s. For Keplerian motion, this corresponds to a distance between the absorber and the central engine of ~1.3 pc, which places the absorber just outside the BLR region. We further estimate a density of ~5\times10^6 cm^(-3) and a kinetic luminosity of ~10^43 - 10^44 erg/s. Such large kinetic powers suggest that outflows detected via EUV lines are potentially major contributors to AGN feedback., Comment: Accepted for publication in the MNRAS after a moderate revision

Non-resonant FeII* 2365, 2396, 2612, 2626 emission can potentially trace galactic winds in emission and provide useful constraints to wind models. From the 3'x3' mosaic of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) obtained with the VLT/MUSE integral field spectrograph, we identify a statistical sample of 40 FeII* emitters and 50 MgII 2796, 2803 emitters from a sample of 271 [OII] 3726, 3729 emitters with reliable redshifts from z = 0.85 - 1.5 down to 2E-18 (3 sigma) ergs/s/cm^2 (for [OII]), covering the stellar mass range 10^8 - 10^11 Msun. The FeII* and MgII emitters follow the galaxy main sequence, but with a clear dichotomy. Galaxies with masses below 10^9 Msun and star formation rates (SFRs) of 10 Msun/year have FeII* emission without accompanying MgII emission. Between these two regimes, galaxies have both MgII and FeII* emission, typically with MgII P-Cygni profiles. Indeed, the MgII profile shows a progression along the main sequence from pure emission to P-Cygni profiles to strong absorption, due to resonant trapping. Combining the deep MUSE data with HST ancillary information, we find that galaxies with pure MgII emission profiles have lower star formation rate surface densities than those with either MgII P-Cygni profiles or FeII* emission. These spectral signatures produced through continuum scattering and fluorescence, MgII P-Cygni profiles and FeII* emission, are better candidates for tracing galactic outflows than pure MgII emission, which may originate from HII regions. We compare the absorption and emission rest-frame equivalent widths for pairs of FeII transitions to predictions from outflow models and find that the observations consistently have less total re-emission than absorption, suggesting either dust extinction or non-isotropic outflow geometries., 16 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in A&A (14 October 2017)

We report on the detection of three strong HI absorbers originating in the outskirts (i.e., impact parameter, $\rho_{\rm cl} \approx (1.6-4.7) r_{500}$) of three massive ($M_{500}\sim3\times10^{14} M_{\odot}$) clusters of galaxies at redshift $z_{\rm cl} \approx 0.46$, in the $Hubble Space Telescope$ Cosmic Origins Spectrograph ($HST$/COS) spectra of 3 background UV-bright quasars. These clusters were discovered by the 2500 deg$^2$ South Pole Telescope Sunyaev$-$Zel'dovich (SZ) effect survey. All three COS spectra show partial Lyman limit absorber with $N(HI) > 10^{16.5} \ \rm cm^{-2}$ near the photometric redshifts ($|\Delta z/(1+z)| \approx 0.03$) of the clusters.
