Abstract

Introduction: In the recent past, it was not possible to treat coronary disease in Mali due to a lack of technical facilities. All our coronary patients were evacuated to the Maghreb, France or the sub-region to receive adequate care. In 2019, the opening of an interventional cardiology room at the University Hospital "Luxembourg" and the training of a team has allowed the local management of a good number of Malians and foreigners suffering from coronary pathology. We report here the results of 30 months of activities. Methodology: We performed a perspective analysis of coronary angiograms and angioplasties performed in our center from September 2019 to February 2022. Clinical, paraclinical including angiographic data were collected and analyzed. Results: Between September 2019 and February 2022, 670 patients underwent coronary angiography, 262 of whom were followed by angioplasty. Male gender was predominant (72.6%), a sex ratio of 2.62. The mean age was 59 years and the 46-65 age group was the most dominant (50.24%). High blood pressure was the main cardiovascular risk factor (33.8%). Chronic coronary syndrome was the most frequent indication (59.8%) followed by coronary syndromes (38.3%). The radial route was used in 98%. Coronary angiography was pathological in 69%. Multitruncular lesions were predominant (35.5%) followed by monotruncular (32.8%). 39.10% of our patients underwent angioplasty. Complications were minimal (3%) and mortality was 2.03%. Conclusion: In our developing countries, we are witnessing an epidemiological transition with the decrease in infectious diseases and the emergence of non-communicable diseases, particularly coronary diseases. Abstract

This work is an energy analysis of a simple effect absorption cooling system operating with H2O-LiBr pair in the climatic conditions of Senegal. To achieve this, the energy balance at the level of the various components of the system will be established in order to show the behavior of each component of the system according to the climatic conditions of the study site. To find out if this cooling absorption system is suitable for the Senegalese climate, the effects of the temperature of the absorber and the generator have respectively been seen on the mass flow rates and on the circulation factor. The behavior of the cooling absorption system in the weather conditions of Senegal was predicted using a mathematical model developed with Engineering Equation Solver (EES) software. The simulation results of this present work were compared with those found in the literature. The thermodynamic parameters such as temperature, entropy, enthalpy, mass fraction found at the level of the various components of the system are in agreement with those found by other authors. Similarly, the results obtained show that for better performance of the system, the operating parameters must be optimized taking into account the crystallization limits of lithium bromide. Similarly, modifications must be made to the design of some devices such as the absorber and the generator to better adapt them to local climatic conditions. Beyond the design and modification of the components of the system, it is also necessary to play on the operating conditions for a better functioning of the absorption cooling system in Senegal. 24. Fluorescent nanodiamonds for nanosensing and single-molecule imaging

Abstract

Unlike ensemble measurements where individual behaviours are averaged and therefore inaccessible, single-molecule microscopy allows researchers to obtain real-time information about a biomolecule's intracellular localisation, interactions or conformational changes. The observation time of individual biomolecules, typically a few seconds to a few minutes, depends on the photostability of the fluorescent molecules used as imaging probes. The limitation of the observation time prevents us to gain precious insight on long-term individual biomolecular behaviours as biological processes like bacterial cell division take at least 20 minutes to occur. The fluorescent nitrogen-vacancy defect in nanodiamond (ND) can emit light for hours and is an established nanoscale probe for quantum sensing (e.g., magnetometry); as a result, there has been much interest in using NDs in biological imaging. Nevertheless, the implementation of fluorescent NDs (FNDs) in single-molecule imaging has been limited by the lack of single-molecule characterisation methods and the low brightness of 10-nm FNDs. In this thesis, we first report the development of a photophysical characterisation method for FNDs down to 5-10 nm in size and present the discovery of the 10-nm ND's potential as direct pH nanosensors. We then pursue the establishment of a new characterisation technique for diffusing NDs and describe an innovative routine to estimate the proportion of FNDs among all the NDs. An optimised biofunctionalisation approach is detailed, thus allowing us to perform in vitro single-molecule work with the smallest conjugated FNDs ever manufactured (10-15 nm). Finally, we explore the application of these small functionalised FNDs for quantum sensing and present in vivo experiments using conjugated FNDs in bacteria.

Abstract

Climate change has severe negative impacts on livelihoods and food systems worldwide. Our future climate according to latest scenarios seriously undermine current efforts to improve the state of food security and nutrition, especially in sub-Sahara Africa. To address this to its full extent, there is an urgent need for transformational change of our food systems towards more sustainability and resilience. Agroecology could play a vital role here. As a response to FAO’s governing bodies’ call for increased evidence-based work on agroecology, this study aims to elaborate on existing links between agroecology and climate change. It provides evidence on the technical and policy potential of agroecology to build resilient food systems. Inspired by the idea that transformation will only happen through a coordinated approach among all levels, this study was jointly developed by a broad set of actors from UN agencies (FAO), research institutes (FIBL, Bioversity, ISRA) and CSOs (Biovision, Enda Pronat, ICE) and thus combines evidence from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives. The overall research question of this study was: How can agroecology foster climate change adaptation, mitigation and resilience through practices and policies? To provide a robust and evidence based answer to this we analysed three different dimensions: 1. International policy arena, in particular in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture; 2. Peer-reviewed scientific studies on agroecology applying a meta-analysis; and 3. Two case studies in Kenya and Senegal that assess both, the policy potential of agroecology in respective national settings and the technical potential of agroecology to foster climate resilience on farm-level. The main findings of the study are: - Robust scientific evidence demonstrates that agroecology increases climate resilience. Success factors for this are that agroecology builds on: a) ecological principles, in particular on biodiversity, overall diversity and healthy soils (meta-analysis and case studies results); b) social aspects, in particular on the co-creation and sharing of knowledge and fostering traditions (case study results). - More than ten percent of the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) by UNFCCC member states mention agroecology and consider it a valid approach to address climate change. The climate potential of agroecology is furthermore backed by the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land and the 2019 HLPE report of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) (int. policy analysis result). - The interdisciplinary and systemic nature of agroecology is key for its true transformational power. However these characteristics are also the main challenges for both, conducting comprehensive research and policy revisions: typically research concepts and policy processes focus on the productive dimension with selective sectorial views (meta-analysis and policy analysis results). The key recommendations from this study are: - Given the sound knowledge base, fostering agroecology to build resilience should be recognized as a viable climate change adaptation strategy. - Barriers to the scaling-up of agroecology need to be addressed: amongst others, improved access to knowledge and understanding of systemic approaches should be fostered across sectors, stakeholders and scales. - Further comparative research on the multidimensional effects of agroecology is needed. - Agroecology’s transformative resilience-building potential depends on its holistic and systemic nature which goes beyond a set of practices and includes: a social movement for producers’ empowerment and a multidisciplinary scientific paradigm.

Abstract

Understanding of climate aridity is an important step towards assessing the availability of water in a given area. This understanding requires an appropriate analysis allowing monitoring the spatio-temporal evolution of the parameters which act on the availability of water. In this study, we used annual rainfall and temperatures from 5 synoptic stations in the groundnut basin over the period 1965-2014. The study is essentially based on a quantitative and qualitative examination of the Lang, Martonne and hydrothermal indices. It is for us to extract information that can guide agricultural planning choices. The results obtained show that the groundnut basin actually experienced aridity phenomena during the study period. For the five regional stations, there are three degrees of aridity, namely semi-arid, arid and hyper-arid. In terms of duration and frequency, Louga stands out as the most affected and Kaolack the least affected by the aridity phenomenon. In terms of water balance, Fatick seems to be the most affected and Louga the least affected for the water deficit. In terms of heat balance, Louga stands out as the warmest and Thies the least hot. A comparison of the three indices has led to the conclusion that the Martonne aridity index remains very satisfactory for studies of a regional nature. These results thus highlight the great vulnerability of the area to drying up and global warming, especially from north to south. Indeed, an increasing decrease in precipitation and temperatures was observed during the period under review, which widened the gap between the amount of precipitation and the demand for water in agriculture.
