The article examines the features of the initial stage of the historiography of the Great Patriotic War, the tradi-tions of which were laid down in the 1930s and were directly related to the reformatting of historical science into an ideologically charged instrument of agitation and propaganda. As a result of the reforms of higher education in the 1920s and the repressions against scholars, the continuity of the academic principles of historical research was violat-ed, which led to a split in historical science. Those scholars who studied the events in the modern and recent history of Russia and the USSR, including military history, found themselves in a particularly difficult situation. Military history, which emerged as an independent direction in the 1920s, determined the topics and approaches to the analysis of the events of the Civil War, and later the Great Patriotic War. During the war years, a characteristic of the studies of the Great Patriotic War was their epic nature, focused on the description of the feat of the Soviet people. The conceptual model of the war was detailed in Stalin's speeches and replicated in academic works and textbooks in the post-war period. Статья посвящена началу становления учения О.Б. Лепешинской о происхождении клеток из бесструктурного живого вещества, в частности, рассматриваются результаты работы Лепешинской в Биологическом институте им. К.А. Тимирязева (1926–1935) и Всесоюзном институте экспериментальной медицины (ВИЭМ) (1936–1940), также уделяется внимание началу научной карьеры Ольги Борисовны в Московском университете. На основе широкого круга архивных документов, часть из которых впервые вводится в научный оборот, показаны особенности взаимодействия формальных и неформальных институций в советской науке, проанализированы начальные этапы научной биографии Лепешинской, а также предпринята попытка реконструкции процессов, позволивших ей приблизиться к вершине научного олимпа Советского Союза. Автором выделяются три основных этапа в становлении учения Лепешинской: формирование (1919–1926), когда с назначением в медицинский институт в Ташкенте и позднее работы на кафедре гистологии Московского университета начинается путь Ольги Борисовны в науку; институционализация (1926–1936), когда Лепешинская работает в Биологическом институте им. К.А. Тимирязева и начинает оформлять учение о живом веществе, маргинализация (1936–1940), которая связана с началом работы Лепешинской в ВИЭМе и конфликте с рядом ленинградских ученых. Особое внимание в статье уделяется вопросу взаимодействия О.Б. Лепешинской со своими сторонниками, в числе которых были Т.Д. Лысенко, Г.К. Хрущов, А.И. Абрикосов и др., а также борьбе с оппонентами — А.А. Заварзиным, Б.П. Токиным и другими, преимущественно ленинградскими учеными. Автором делается вывод, что в период с 1919 по 1940 г. вокруг Лепешинской складывается пока еще небольшой круг формальных и неформальных институций, позволивших ей обозначить свое учение и вступить в дискуссию с ведущими учеными-гистологами. Павлова, К.А. Тимирязева, не апеллировать к подобным методам, а завязать «научную продукцию» на свое имя., The article is devoted to the beginnings of the institutionalisation of O.B. Lepeshinskaya’s doctrine about the origin of cells from unstructured living substance. In particular, it covers the results of her work at the K.A. Timiryazev Biological Institute (1926–1935) and the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine (‘VIEM’) (1936–1940) as well as the beginning of her scientific career at Moscow University. Based on a vast array of archival records some of which are introduced for scientific use for the first time, the interplay of formal and informal institutions in Soviet science is shown, the early stages of Lepeshiskaya’s scientific biography is analysed, and an attempt is made to reconstruct the processes that allowed her to approach the top of the Soviet scientific Mount Olympus. The author identifies three main stages in the history of Lepeshinskaya’s doctrine: formation (1919– 1926) when her scientific journey begins with her appointment to the medical institute in Tashkent and her subsequent work at the Department of Histology at Moscow University; institutionalisation (1926–1936) when Lepeshinskaya works at the K.A. Timiryazev Biological Institute and begins to publish her living substance theory; and marginalisation (1936–1940), associated with the beginning of her work at VIEM and her conflict with a number of Leningrad scientists. Particular attention is given to O.B. Lepeshinskaya’s interactions with her supporters, including T.D. Lysenko, G.K. Khrushchov, and A.I. Abrikosov and to her struggle against her opponents: A.A. Zavarzin, B.P. Tokin, and others, mostly the scientists from Leningrad. The author concludes that, during the period from 1919 to 1940, a so far small circle of the formal and informal institutions formed around Lepeshinskaya, which allowed her to assert her doctrine and engage in a controversy with the leading histologists. It was during this period that the situation had formed that later allowed Lepeshinskaya — contrary to other actors from the history of pseudoscience who made references to the figures of I.V. Michurin, I.P. Pavlov, and K.A. Timiryazev — to tie her ‘scientific products’ to her own name rather than resort to such methods.

This paper seeks to widen the understanding of Cold War anthropology by considering the history of contacts and dialogue between Soviet and American anthropologists from 1945 to 1964. Focusing mainly on the Soviet side, it argues that the isolation of Soviet ethnography was never complete, although it reached a highpoint during late Stalinism. The paper considers the resuming of contacts between US and USSR scholars in the second half of the 1950s; Soviet participation in international anthropological congresses and its effects on theoretical developments in Soviet anthropology; and the preparation, proceedings and consequences of the 7th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (ICAES) and the Expert Meeting on the Biological Aspects of Race, held in Moscow in 1964. The paper argues that these events were instrumental in widening the confines of Soviet Marxism and introducing new research areas (such as psychological anthropology) into Soviet academia. This enabled ethnography in the USSR to present itself as an alternative centre of consolidation for both Western left-leaning anthropologists and scholars from postcolonial countries. Cet article cherche à enrichir la compréhension de l’anthropologie pendant la guerre froide en prenant en compte l'histoire des contacts et du dialogue entre les anthropologues soviétiques et américains, de 1945 à 1964. Se positionnant surtout du côté soviétique, l’article démontre que l’isolement de l’ethnographie soviétique, qui a atteint son point culminant vers la fin du stalinisme, n’était jamais absolu. Parmi les thèmes abordés : la reprise des contacts entre les chercheurs américains et soviétiques dans la seconde moitié des années 1950 ; la participation soviétique aux congrès anthropologiques internationaux et ses effets sur les développements théoriques de l’anthropologie soviétique ; et la mise en place, les publications et les conséquences du 7e Congrès international des sciences anthropologiques et ethnologiques (CIAES) et de la réunion d'experts sur les aspects biologiques de la race, qui se sont tenus à Moscou en 1964. L’article démontre que ces événements ont contribué à élargir le champ du marxisme soviétique et à introduire de nouveaux domaines de recherche (tels que l’anthropologie psychologique) dans le monde universitaire soviétique. À la longue, l’ethnographie soviétique est devenue un centre alternatif de consolidation pour les anthropologues occidentaux de gauche et pour les chercheurs des pays postcoloniaux.

The article is a study into the advent of the ‘systems approach’ in Soviet psychology in the 1970s. This arose mainly through the theoretical publications of B. F. Lomov, written after he had been appointed director of the newly established Institute of Psychology. These publications are examined as reflections of those interests related to the sociopolitical role of the director of this leading psychology institution, which was officially charged with building a common theoretical and methodological framework for all Soviet psychology. The main goal of these texts, predetermined by the role of their author, was to advance a theoretical scheme that made possible a formal unification of the schools of psychology, and which at the same time promoted an image of psychology as a research field that was both capable of achieving practically applicable results and compatible with the new ‘big science’ trend.

espanolEn este articulo se aborda la novela de ciencia ficcion El corazon de la serpiente, del sovietico Ivan Efremov, y se evidencia lo que identificamos como una reivindicacion ideologica de la teoria marxista de la historia o materialismo historico; tambien se estudia la influencia que dicho contenido ideologico tiene en la concepcion de la ciencia ficcion que Efremov adopta y, en un ejercicio de meta novela, expone en su mencionada obra. Para esto se expondran algunas caracteristicas de la ciencia ficcion sovietica en general, y las particularidades de la obra de Efremov. De igual forma se da cuenta de los aspectos esenciales de la teoria marxista de la historia, aspecto teorico en el que el autor fundamenta la diferencia de la ciencia ficcion producida en el “mundo capitalista”, y su ficcion del mundo futuro y el contacto extraterrestre que propone debe basarse en aspectos cientificos, pues la historia como ciencia que alcanza a delinear aspectos de la futura sociedad. EnglishThis article deals with the science fiction novel The Heart of the Serpent, by the Soviet Ivan Efremov, and shows what we identify as an ideological vindication of the Marxist theory of history or historical materialism; and the influence that said ideological content has on the conception of science fiction that Efremov adopts and, in a meta novel exercise, he exposes in his mentioned work is studied. For this, some characteristics of Soviet science fiction in general, and the particularities of Efremov's work will be exposed. In the same way, he realizes the essential aspects of Marxist theory of history, a theoretical aspect on which Efremov bases the difference of science fiction produced in the "capitalist world", and his fiction of the future world and the extraterrestrial contact that It must be based on scientific aspects, since history as a science that manages to delineate aspects of the future society.

The development of the space industry became one of the priority areas of Soviet science and engineering in the second half of the 20th century. At the same time, the question of the cost of the Soviet space program remains open. The lack of direct data led to various kinds of speculation. The article analyzes the approximate cost of the Soviet space project in the first decade of its existence based on the declassified documents from the former archive of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU. The article shows from which budget items the Soviet space program was financed. The author demonstrates that the financing of the Soviet space program was organized not as an annual budget expenditure, but as expenses for the implementation of individual programs. Every year, the budget of the USSR was adjusted depending on the volume of work performed. In addition to direct financing, the necessary material and technical resources were allocated for the space projects. An approximate calculation shows that the USSR spent about 20.19 billion rubles in old prices in 1955–1960 and 98.8 million rubles in new prices in 1961–1964. In total, during in the first space decade, the USSR spent about 2 billion rubles in new prices and almost 20 billion rubles in old ones. Comparing with other items of expenditure during the same years, the author shows that the total expenditure on Soviet space program did not exceed 0.30%.

The concept of Soviet science was formed in many ways spontaneously. Initially, under the conditions of the Civil War, science was viewed by the Bolsheviks as a tool and a way to achieve political and military goals. But, as with other objects of social design — socialist economy, culture, education, etc. — they did not have clear ideas about socialist science. Only the opinion about the class character of bourgeois science and its role, subordinate to the interests of capital and the monarchy, was stable. Taking this factor into account, the attitude of the new government to various scientific areas was formed. The Bolsheviks had more confidence in the natural and technical sciences, the achievements of which were supposed to be “taken as they are passed on to us by the bourgeois heritage”. The social sciences and humanities were judged sharply critically as, on the whole, hostile to the socialist idea.The Soviet model of science finally took shape in the 1930s. It was distinguished by some specific features that largely determined its achievements and failures. These include a hierarchical, open-ended organisational structure that includes 3 sectors of science (departmental, academic and university). In addition, it is necessary to note such features of Soviet science as decentralisation, complete dependence on the state and the planning system.The tactics of state support for strategically important areas of science and the lack of alternative mechanisms for financing scientific research contributed to the rapid bureaucratisation of Soviet science, deformation of the structure of scientific knowledge (imbalance between the exact, natural, technical, social sciences and the humanities in terms of the pace and level of development) and the priority of applied research over fundamental. And one more feature is the strict ideological control of scientific knowledge, supplemented by repressions against “bourgeois” science and its representatives, as well as the prohibition (explicit and implicit) on direct contacts, which led to the isolation and low level of mobility of the scientific community., Концепция советской науки формировалась во многом стихийно. К ним можно отнести иерархическую, разомкнутую организационную структуру, включающую три сектора науки (ведомственный, академический и вузовский). Кроме того, необходимо отметить такие черты советской науки, как децентрализация, полная зависимость от государства и системы планирования.Тактика государственной поддержки стратегически важных направлений науки и отсутствие альтернативных механизмов финансирования научных исследований способствовали быстрой бюрократизации советской науки, деформации структуры научного знания (дисбаланс между точными, естественными, техническими, общественными и гуманитарными науками по темпам и уровню развития) и приоритету прикладных исследований над фундаментальными. Еще одна особенность — жесткий идеологический контроль научного знания, дополненный репрессиями против «буржуазной» науки и ее представителей, а также запретом (явным и неявным) на прямые контакты, что обусловило замкнутость и низкий уровень мобильности научного сообщества.

On the basis of a secondary analysis of the results of sociological research, the main directions of the analysis of the genesis and further development of the phenomenon of post-Soviet science are outlined. The main attention is paid to the problem of the influence of the global socio-economic and socio-cultural contexts on the formation of system-forming elements and factors that determine the development of the domestic system for the production of scientific knowledge. An essential part of the article is devoted to the analysis of the consequences of the radical reform of the academic sector for the fate of Russian science. It is concluded that science in Russia has been able to successfully adapt to the new conditions of activity, has learned to successfully combine scientific research and commercial interests. At the same time, the excessive dependence of the sphere of fundamental research on the state determines the weakness of science, its weak participation in the innovative development of the country.

Among domesticated animals, dogs are the exemplary object of the activities of the Anthropocene. Human exploitation of dogs’ friendly disposition culminated in scientific experiments on these animals and climaxed in Soviet science and space exploration. Dogs are paradoxically embedded in the Anthropocene both as victims and as involuntary human accomplices in hunting, which can lead to animal extinction. I explore different futuristic takes on the possibility of escape for these humanised animals from human exploitation, applying concepts of Foucauldian heterotopia and/or dystopia.

Цель исследовательской статьи состоит в изучении процесса возникновения и развития научного отдела Народного комиссариата просвещения Башкирской АССР в переломный для Советской России исторический период 1920-1921 гг. Рассматриваются вопросы создания структуры, подбора научных кадров и основные направления деятельности научного отдела в области архивного, музейного, библиотечного дела. Анализируется содержание историко-этнографических исследований научных сотрудников Башнаркомпроса в первые годы советской власти. Особое внимание уделено профессиональной деятельности Фатимы Аскаровны Девлеткильдеевой, которая являлась руководителем научного отдела в рассматриваемый период. В научный оборот вводятся новые исторические источники из фондов Государственного архива Российской Федерации, Национального архива Республики Башкортостан и Национального архива Республики Татарстан. Сделан вывод о том, что результаты деятельности научного отдела в 1920-1921 гг. позволили заложить материально-организационную и кадровую основу советской научно-исследовательской школы в Башкирской АССР. Полученные данные позволят восполнить пробелы в существующей историографии вопроса за счет введения в оборот новых архивных источников, а также провести ретроспективный комплексный анализ истории становления научных учреждений в Республике Башкортостан, The purpose of the research article is to study the process of emergence and development of the scientific department of the People’s Commissariat of Education of the Bashkir ASSR in the critical historical period for Soviet Russia 1920-1921. The issues of creating a structure, selecting scientific personnel and the main activities of the scientific department in the field of archival, museum, library business are considered. The content of the historical and ethnographic studies of the research staff of Bashnarkompros in the first years of Soviet power is analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the professional activities of Fatima Askarovna Devletkildeeva, who was the head of the scientific department in the period under review. New historical sources from the collections of the State Archives of the Russian Federation, the National Archives of the Republic of Bashkortostan and the National Archives of the Republic of Tatarstan are introduced into scientific circulation. It is concluded that the results of the activities of the scientific department in 1920-1921. made it possible to lay the material, organizational and personnel basis of the Soviet research school in the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The obtained data will make it possible to fill in the gaps in the existing historiography of the issue by introducing new archival sources into circulation, as well as to conduct a retrospective comprehensive analysis of the history of the formation of scientific institutions in the Republic of Bashkortostan.

В статье рассматриваются вопросы институционализации лженаучных учений в советской биологии и роль неформальных институций в их продвижении. В качестве примера выбрана деятельность О.Б. Лепешинской и ее учение о живом веществе, которое в 1950 г. на совещании в Академии наук СССР было признано достоверным, а его противники подверглись гонениям. Выделяется пять основных этапов в продвижении учения Лепешинской: формирование (1919–1926), институционализация (1926–1936), маргинализация (1936–1940), признание (1943–1953) и маргинализация (1953–1963). В каждом из этих периодов действовали свои неформальные институции, сложившиеся вокруг Лепешинской: начиная со студенческого кружка в Московском университете и заканчивая группами научных работников, среди которых были А.И. Абрикосов, Б.И. Лаврентьев, Т.Д. Лысенко, Г.К. Хрущов, Н.Н. Жуков-Вережников и др. На основании широкого круга проанализированных источников делается вывод, что феномен сложившихся вокруг Лепешинской неформальных институций позволял ей, в отличие от других персонажей из истории лженауки, которые для утверждения своих идей привлекали фигуры давно умерших И.В. Мичурина, И.П. Павлова, К.А. Тимирязева, не приходилось обращаться к подобным методам, и вся «научная продукция» была «завязана» исключительно на ее имя. Лепешинской, продолжавшаяся не одно десятилетие, является уникальным примером в институционализации лженаучных учений в советской науке и интересным образцом взаимодействия с ней неформальных научных институций, сложившихся вокруг Лепешинской и поддерживавших ее учение о живом веществе достаточно продолжительное время., The paper is devoted to the institutionalisation of pseudoscientific theories in Soviet biology and the role of informal institutions in promoting these theories, as exemplified by O.B. Lepeshinskaya’s activities and her doctrine of living matter. This doctrine was deemed valid at a meeting in the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1950 and her opponents were persecuted. We have identified five main stages in the promotion of Lepeshinskaya’s doctrine: formation (1919–1926), institutionalisation (1926–1936), marginalisation (1936–1940), recognition (1943–1953), and marginalisation (1953–1963). In each of these periods, there were informal institutions that developed around Lepeshinskaya, beginning with a student circle at Moscow University and ending with the groups of researchers including A.I. Abrikosov, B.I. Lavrentiev, T.D. Lysenko, G.K. Khrushchov, N.N. Zhukov-Verezhnikov, and others. It is concluded on the basis of a wide range of sources that the phenomenon of informal institutions that have developed around her allowed Lepeshinskaya (unlike other actors in the history of pseudoscience who referred to the figures of the long-dead I.V. Michurin, I.P. Pavlov, and K.A. Timiryazev to assert their ideas) to do without resorting to such methods and her ‘scientific production’ as she called it herself was tied to her name only. The story of the promotion of Lepeshinskaya’s ‘scientific production’ that continued for several decades is a unique case of institutionalisation of pseudoscientific doctrines in Soviet science and an interesting example of her interaction with informal scientific institutions that have developed around Lepeshinskaya and supported her doctrine of living matter for a long time.

The article discusses the history of the State Institute (GINZ) of People’s Health Care of the People’s Commissariat of Public Health (Narkomzdrav) of the RSFSR in the 1920s. The study is based on the documents stored in the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the State Archive of the Russian Federation, in particular reports of the Institute of Experimental Biology, Institute of Sanitation and Hygiene, and GINZ itself dating back to 1918-1929. These documents give us some understanding as to how work was organized in these institutions and how the research and office space was allocated. Based on the analysis of the archival materials, the study reconstructs the daily professional life of scientists engaged in experimental research in the natural sciences institutes in the 1920s. Статья посвящена истории Государственного института народного здравоохранения Наркомздрава РСФСР (ГИНЗ) в 1920-е гг. На основе архивных документов, представленных в фондах Архива Российской академии наук и Государственного архива Российской Федерации, автор рассматривает сюжет, связанный с организацией исследований в учреждениях ГИНЗ в период 1918–1929 гг. Ценным источником стали отчетные документы о научной и хозяйственной работе Института экспериментальной биологии, Санитарно-гигиенического института и самого ГИНЗ, иллюстрирующие разные аспекты обустройства рабочего пространства, в первую очередь – обеспечение пригодным для исследовательской работы помещением. Анализ выявленных материалов позволяет реконструировать выбранный сюжет и дополнить картину профессиональной повседневности ученых, занимавшихся экспериментальными исследованиями в институтах естественнонаучного профиля в 1920-е гг. The authors publish and analyze newly found archival documents on the first years of the academic Institute of History (19361941). The most interesting feature is the project of 1939 on the foundation of two separate research institutions: the Institute of History of the USSR and the Institute of World History. The authors analyze reasons for these projects emergence and subsequent refusal, arguing that reasons for refusal were administrative and economic.
