Abstract

In this paper we investigate the existence of positive solution for a class of quasilinear problem on an Orlicz-Sobolev space that can be nonreflexive $$- \Delta_{\Phi} u +V(x)\phi(|u|)u= K(x)f(u)\mbox{ in } \mathbb{R}^{N}$$ where $N\geq2$, $V,K$ are nonnegative continuous functions and $f$ is a continuous function with a quasicritical growth. Here we extend the Hardy-type inequalities presented in \cite{AlvesandMarco} to nonreflexive Orlicz spaces. Through inequalities together with a variational method for non-differentiable functionals we will obtain a ground state solution. We analyze also the problem with $V=0$.

Abstract

Thermoregulation system and human body responses, both physiological (i.e. skin and core temperature) and psychological (thermal sensation and thermal comfort), have been of considerable interest to researchers. However, while reactions to extreme conditions are well understood and explained, there is a considerable knowledge gap for mild temperature range adaptation. Previous research focused on the whole body response, while local analysis is more appropriate for a new generation of intelligent thermal control systems such as needed in planes. Furthermore majority of previous studies were carried out predominantly on mannequins or with subjects placed in highly controlled lab chambers, hence adaptations in normal shared spaces is not investigated in sufficient depth. In addition, no study investigated infants’ temperature adaptation. This thesis describes the comprehensive study of the human temperature distribution in selected areas, both for adults and infants under the age of 2. Furthermore, variation of core and local skin temperature, thermal sensation and level of comfort due to long periods of inactivity were also investigated in adults. These studies have set the basis for the development of temperature monitoring systems. The first monitoring system specific to children under 2 provides fever detection based on skin temperature measurement. It was developed for a Spanish textile company (AITEX), and it is a patent under consideration. The second system monitors level of comfort and thermal sensation of adults in indoor environments. The system is based on pre-existing statistical studies and Fanger’s steady-state model. It adapts to the individual while analysing real time skin temperature distribution, and identifies.

Abstract

Permanent ponds represent important habitats for aquatic biodiversity and provide vital ecosystem services as key elements for blue landscape connectivity. Although mostly neglected in management programmes, protection schemes and biodiversity studies in general, ponds constitute habitats with high á- and spatial â-diversity, providing unique habitat conditions for many rare and endemic species. The main focus of our contribution is to describe Odonata (including both dragonflies and damselflies) diversity patterns from 46 ponds distributed across Europe. Our data set summarises all Odonate occurrences (i.e., Odonata captured in emerging traps, adults recorded in the surrounding environment and larvae from benthic samples) from the EUROPONDS project - an Early Career Researchers (ECR) project focusing on emerging insects from ponds. Field sampling was conducted during a whole year sampling campaign throughout 2020/21 in 18 European countries. Our preliminary results suggest a clear latitudinal gradient in Odonata diversity across Europe, i.e., the highest α- and β-diversity levels were found in southernmost ponds (Spain) and the lowest diversity in northernmost ponds (Ireland). Odonata that belonged to the four families of Aeshnidae, Libellulidae, Coenagrionidae and Platycnemididae were captured in the emergence traps in only nine out of the total 46 sampled ponds. The most diverse family was Coenagrionidae, which also represented the most abundant odonate family in benthic samples, especially noted in Polish ponds. Among the observed adult specimens of Odonata (42 different taxa), the commonest species across Europe were Sympetrum striolatum, Aeshna cyanea, Anax imperator, Libellula quadrimaculata, Crocothemis erythraea and Enallagma cyathigerum. Additionally, the endemic species Ischnura graellsii and the newly immigrant Trithemis kirbyi were reported from Spanish ponds. These locations constitute their northernmost distributional ranges in Europe. Overall, our findings should contribute to the knowledge on spatial distributions of odonates across European ponds.

Whilst being small and shallow, permanent ponds provide valuable habitats for a multitude of organisms as well as provide habitats for animals like aquatic insects and others, including many rare species. These ponds, which were often neglected in limnological studies, were the core of our joint project, the 3rd freshwater project - EUROPONDS in order to evaluate the often overlooked ecological ecosystem services provided by permanent ponds across Europe. As a part of this project, two Hungarian ponds were surveyed for a full year (2020/21). One of the project aims was to assess the freshwater macroinvertebrate assemblages by dip netting over the four annual seasons. Here, we present preliminary results examining the data on larval Odonata of two Hungarian ponds in relation to the physicochemical variables measured, as well as compare the results to a previous national survey. Altogether the examination of 24 waterbodies (22 from a national survey and two from the EUROPONDS project) was carried out in this study. All of the involved water bodies were clustered using a Ward analysis including the water physicochemical parameters into three groups, and then the dragonfly fauna was investigated within the groups found. Diversity metrics and the presence or absence of different species were also included and the results were compared between the different clusters. Herein, we aimed to assess differences between the three main clusters, identify key factors driving the presence of the studied species and the relationship between the diversity indexes and the physicochemical parameters influencing the Odonata communities in the studied ponds.

Abstract

Whilst being generally small and shallow lentic water bodies, ponds provide valuable habitats for a multitude of groups and contribute to habitat connectivity. Semi-aquatic insects emerging from such ponds act as one of the most important vectors of dietary energy to the adjacent terrestrial environment. By providing essential fatty acids, emerging insects constitute an important nutritional food resource for terrestrial (e.g. spiders, lizards, ants) and aerial (e.g. bats, birds) consumers. Broad-scale studies are needed to explore differences in dietary exports encompassing diverse pond types and different landscapes or regions, with the final aim of drawing general patterns. Herein we present the first results of "EUROPONDS". In this ongoing project we quantify the seasonal and spatial variation in insect emergence. In a total of 55 ponds distributed across Europe we installed emergence traps for one week per season over a full year. This broad scale set-up allows us to quantify differences in biomass export between different geographical regions, between rural and urban systems as well as between natural and artificial ponds. The project brings together the knowledge of 80 early-career limnologists from all over Europe and therefore not only provides important insight in the aquatic-terrestrial linkages of ponds, but also provides an important exchange among the future generation of European limnologists.

Abstract

Invertebrates have recently been recognised under a global decline, a situation that seems to be accentuated in continental waterbodies. In the EUROPONDS project we deepened in the contribution of aquatic invertebrates to terrestrial ecosystems, representing countries all over Europe. Our study was encompassed in a restored quarry in Alpedrete, Madrid, Spain, a landscape destined for livestock activities. We evaluated the invertebrate assemblages of a small permanent pond after restoration (physicochemical variables, macroinvertebrates assemblages and macrophytes species) and its contribution to the landscape by the emerging insects. To do that, we have carried out seasonal samplings starting in autumn 2020 and finishing by summer 2021. We detected a highly aquatic biodiversity in our study pond, showing oversaturation of dissolved oxygen concentration and a rich and dense cover of macrophytes. A diverse assemblage of aquatic macroinvertebrates included odonates, heteropterans, coleopterans, culicids, chironomids and ephemeropterans. We located two traps for emergent insects during one week each season, and we captured flying and adult individuals of some of these macroinvertebrates (even 60 chironomids in winter), revealing the importance of this pond for the adjacent landscape. We concluded that our shallow permanent pond shows a high degree of naturalisation due to the huge diversity of fauna and flora recorded. We consider of concern that the cattle’s faeces in the surroundings of the pond could reduce the water quality as detected an increase in nitrate concentration (0,16 mg/L in winter). Therefore, we encourage regional authorities to include this pond in the regional program for wetland conservation.

Abstract

Globally there’s an astounding and often underestimated number of ponds (small stagnant water bodies). Ponds, whilst directly providing habitats for a multitude of animals and plants, also contribute to habitat connectivity by enabling organisms to cross the landscape, acting as “blue stepping stones”. The diverse community of insects emerging from such ponds acts as a vector of dietary energy to the surrounding terrestrial environment. By providing highly unsaturated fatty acids, emerging insects constitute a high nutritional food resource for terrestrial (e.g. spiders, lizards) and avian (e.g. bats, birds) consumers. One important dietary resource these insects export is essential fatty acids. These are introduced initially into the local food web and then on into the main terrestrial cycle. However, knowledge about the exact ecological role of ponds, their contribution to beta- and gamma-biodiversity, and dietary energy transfer is limited. Herein, we present preliminary results for the first seasonal sampling (Autumn 2020) of our ongoing “EUROPONDS” project. EUROPONDS aims to fill this gap of knowledge on ponds by analyzing 55 ponds distributed across Europe from Sweden in the north to remote Mediterranean islands in the south, from rural areas to large cities, and including both artificial and natural ponds. EUROPONDS brings together around 80 European early-career limnologists and covers autumn, winter, spring, and summer sampling campaigns through 2020/21. Preliminary results from autumn 2020 indicate differences in emerging insect biomass, trophic status of ponds, and between artificial and natural ponds.

Abstract

XX Congress of the Iberian Association of Limnology (AIL-2020), Online Congress 26-29 October Murcia (Spain), Non-Pollen Palynomorphs (NPPs) are sub-fossil remains from a wide range of organisms that can be sensitive to various ecological and/or anthropogenic factors. These microfossils include the remains of fungi, algae and invertebrates. Here we describe NPPs from the sedimentary record of Lake Caldeirão (Corvo Island, 400m a.s.l.), which spans the last two millennia. There are three successional NPP assemblages that track changes from a pristine ecosystem to an area severely altered by human activities. 1) The first assemblage includes diverse fungi wood saprophytes and mycorrhizae, indicating a pristine forest, and a set of aquatic fungal species associated with littoral plant communities. 2) This is followed by an increase in hyphomycetes conidia from decaying wood, and ascospores from the forest pathogen Kretzschmaria deusta. This assemblage also includes Glomeraceae, which is derived from a forested landscape that is disturbed by soil erosion and herbivores. The NPP assemblage points to the major transformation of the landscape from a forest to open grass and wetlands. 3) The most recent assemblage is dominated by ascospores of the coprophilous fungi (Podospora spp. and Sordariaceae) found in the faeces of pasturelivestock. This interpretation is supported by the presence of Lacunastrum and Desmodesmus, planktonic algae, which are associated with nutrient enrichment. The use of NPPs will improve palaeoenvironmental reconstructions from the Azores, although further studies of modern analogues are required to get a better understanding of the specific habitats associated with particular NPPs.

Abstract

XX Congress of the Iberian Association of Limnology (AIL-2020), Online Congress 26-29 October Murcia (Spain), is generally attributed to the Portuguese during the XVth century, but recent insights have raised questions about whether the islands were discovered earlier. Paleolimnological data from São Miguel suggest that the island was settled 150 years before the official Portuguese arrival date. To pinpoint the date of first human arrival in the archipelago, we performed multiproxy characterizations (e.g. pollen, diatoms, chironomids, XRF geochemistry, faecal related organic compound) using long continuous sequences of natural lacustrine sedimentary archives to reconstruct past environmental changes for the last millennium across four of the nine islands of the Azores archipelago. We have found evidence of livestock introduction (incl. spores of coprophilous fungi, sterols), extractive forestry, and cereal cultivation around 1150 CE in two islands of the archipelago. After this first human impact period an extensive deforestation and the largescale introduction of exotic species have reshaped the lake and island ecosystems and sedimentary dynamics to present-day status. Hence, our results suggest that the human impact in the Azores archipelago started approximately three centuries prior to the official occupation of the archipelago.

Abstract

There are thousands of ponds across Europe, from Lapland to Mediterranean islands and from remote areas to densely populated cities. Most of them provide habitats for animals like aquatic insects and others, even rare species. Ponds also contribute to habitat connectivity and enable organisms to cross the landscape in their function as “blue stepping stones”. Insects emerging from such ponds can be rich in both biodiversity and dietary energy. They provide food and essential fatty acids for terrestrial and avian consumers (bats, birds, spiders, lizards) and thus, important ecosystem services. However, the knowledge about the ecological role of emerging insects from ponds, and their contribution to biodiversity and dietary energy transfer to consumers of adjacent ecosystems is limited. With this project, we aim to fill this gap of knowledge answering some unresolved questions: how does the trophic status of ponds affect the biodiversity and energy content of emerging insects? How different are ponds from various regions, e.g., cities vs. remote areas, in supporting insect biodiversity? Such questions are to be answered through a highly collaborative network of around 80 young freshwater scientists within EUROPONDS.

Abstract

[Abstract] Humans have made such dramatic and permanent changes to Earth's landscapes that much of it is now substantially and irreversibly altered from its preanthropogenic state. Remote islands, until recently isolated from humans, offer insights into how these landscapes evolved in response to human-induced perturbations. However, little is known about when and how remote systems were colonized because archaeological data and historical records are scarce and incomplete. Here, we use a multiproxy approach to reconstruct the initial colonization and subsequent environmental impacts on the Azores Archipelago. Our reconstructions provide unambiguous evidence for widespread human disturbance of this archipelago starting between 700-60+50 and 850-60+60 Common Era (CE), ca. 700 y earlier than historical records suggest the onset of Portuguese settlement of the islands. Settlement proceeded in three phases, during which human pressure on the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems grew steadily (i.e., through livestock introductions, logging, and fire), resulting in irreversible changes. Our climate models suggest that the initial colonization at the end of the early Middle Ages (500 to 900 CE) occurred in conjunction with anomalous northeasterly winds and warmer Northern Hemisphere temperatures. These climate conditions likely inhibited exploration from southern Europe and facilitated human settlers from the northeast Atlantic. These results are consistent with recent archaeological and genetic data suggesting that the Norse were most likely the earliest settlers on the islands.

Abstract

Background In collaboration with state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments, CDC established the U.S. Zika Pregnancy Registry (USZPR) in early 2016 to monitor pregnant women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection and their infants. Methods This report includes an analysis of completed pregnancies (which include live births and pregnancy losses, regardless of gestational age) in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (DC) with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection reported to the USZPR from January 15 to December 27, 2016. Birth defects potentially associated with Zika virus infection during pregnancy include brain abnormalities and/or microcephaly, eye abnormalities, other consequences of central nervous system dysfunction, and neural tube defects and other early brain malformations. Results During the analysis period, 1,297 pregnant women in 44 states were reported to the USZPR. Zika virus-associated birth defects were reported for 51 (5%) of the 972 fetuses/infants from completed pregnancies with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection (95% confidence interval [CI] = 4%-7%); the proportion was higher when restricted to pregnancies with laboratory-confirmed Zika virus infection (24/250 completed pregnancies [10%, 95% CI = 7%-14%]). Birth defects were reported in 15% (95% CI = 8%-26%) of fetuses/infants of completed pregnancies with confirmed Zika virus infection in the first trimester. Among 895 liveborn infants from pregnancies with possible recent Zika virus infection, postnatal neuroimaging was reported for 221 (25%), and Zika virus testing of at least one infant specimen was reported for 585 (65%). Conclusions and implications for public health practice These findings highlight why pregnant women should avoid Zika virus exposure. Because the full clinical spectrum of congenital Zika virus infection is not yet known, all infants born to women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection during pregnancy should receive postnatal neuroimaging and Zika virus testing in addition to a comprehensive newborn physical exam and hearing screen. Identification and follow-up care of infants born to women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection during pregnancy and infants with possible congenital Zika virus infection can ensure that appropriate clinical services are available.
