Across the world's oceans, our knowledge of the habitats on the seabed is limited. Increasingly, video/imagery data from remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) and towed and drop cameras, deployed from vessels, are providing critical new information to map unexplored benthic (seabed) habitats. However, these vessel-based surveys involve considerable time and personnel, are costly, require favorable weather conditions, and are difficult to conduct in remote, offshore, and deep marine habitats, which makes mapping and surveying large areas of the benthos challenging. In this study, we present a novel and efficient method for mapping diverse benthic habitats on the continental shelf, using animal-borne video and movement data from a benthic predator, the Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea). Six benthic habitats (between 5-110m depth) were identified from data collected by eight Australian sea lions from two colonies in South Australia. These habitats were macroalgae reef, macroalgae meadow, bare sand, sponge/sand, invertebrate reef and invertebrate boulder habitats. Percent cover of benthic habitats differed on the foraging paths of sea lions from both colonies. The distributions of these benthic habitats were combined with oceanographic data to build Random Forest models for predicting benthic habitats on the continental shelf. Random forest models performed well (validated models had a >98% accuracy), predicting large areas of macroalgae reef, bare sand, sponge/sand and invertebrate reef habitats on the continental shelf in southern Australia. Modelling of benthic habitats from animal-borne video data provides an effective approach for mapping extensive areas of the continental shelf. These data provide valuable new information on the seabed and complement traditional methods of mapping and surveying benthic habitats. Context: The radiation of eucalypts into almost every Australian environment offers valuable insights to plant ecological strategies. Aims: We aimed to assess the degree to which functional traits across different organs are independent or reflect coordinated strategies in southern eucalypts. Methods: We applied ordinary and phylogenetic generalised least squares regressions to 164 southern Australian taxa, examining the network of pairwise relationships between 10 functional traits representing aspects of stature, leaf economics, reproduction and post-fire regeneration. We examined coordination and modularity in this network and estimated how phylogeny affects observed trait correlations. Results: Stem and stature traits were generally independent of reproductive traits, with Specific Leaf Area the most connected trait, being correlated with traits from all organs. Resprouting ability was also connected to several traits. Species able to resprout basally, but not epicormically, were on average shorter, stouter, with higher stem sapwood density, thinner bark, smaller leaves and lower Specific Leaf Area than those able to resprout using both methods. Taxa resembled their relatives; phylogenetic signal was significant for all continuous traits except Relative Height, ranging from Pagel's Lambda λ = 0.37 (Relative Bark Thickness) to λ = 0.82 (Specific Leaf Area). Phylogenetic analyses showed weakened correlations for most (but not all) trait pairs. However, most moderate relationships on the trait correlation network also displayed correlated evolution. Conclusions: Stature, stem, leaf and reproductive traits and fire response of eucalypts are somewhat coordinated, principally through leaf economics. Trait combinations that confer ecological competence on eucalypt taxa in present-day conditions are likely to have been similarly favoured throughout their evolutionary history. Human-induced climate change has resulted in long-term drying trends across southern Australia, particularly during the cool season, with the most pronounced impacts observed in the southwest since the 1970s. Although these trends have been linked to changes in large-scale atmospheric circulation features, the limited number of daily weather datasets that extend into the pre-industrial period have so far prevented an assessment of the long-term context of synoptic-level changes associated with global warming. To address this need, we present the development of the longest sub-daily atmospheric pressure, temperature and rainfall records for Australia beginning in 1830. We first consolidate a range of historical observations from the two southern Australian cities of Perth and Adelaide. After assessing the quality and homogeneity of these records, we verify their ability to capture the weather and climate features produced by the Southern Hemisphere's key climate modes of variability. Our analysis shows the historical observations are sensitive to the influence of large-scale dynamical drivers of Australian climate, as well as the relationship between southwestern and southeastern Australia. Finally, we demonstrate the ability of the dataset to resolve daily weather extremes by examining three severe storms that occurred in the nineteenth century associated with westerly storm tracks that influence southern Australia. The historical dataset introduced here provides a foundation for investigating pre-industrial weather and climate variability in southern Australia, extending the potential for attribution studies of anthropogenically-influenced weather and climate extremes. Frothy bloat, associated predominantly with grazing legume‐based pastures, is considered the second most costly disease in beef cattle in southern Australia, costing $84.4 M annually. It frequently results in the sudden death of cattle. In response to concerns from cattle producers, an online survey was conducted in southern Australia in late 2020 to determine the impact of bloat, identify risk factors and determine the efficacy of current preventive measures. For 217 responses, over two‐thirds (70%) of producers reported bloat occurring in the previous 12 months, with estimated morbidity and mortality rates of 3.7% and 5.0% respectively. Bloat was associated with clover or clover‐dominant paddocks (79%) and was not associated with grass or grass‐dominant pastures or low clover pastures (92%) nor grazing crops (27%). For bloat that occurred in the past 12 months, cattle were very commonly grazing on clover or clover‐dominant paddocks (90%) and occasionally lucerne‐dominated paddocks (7%). Two‐thirds of producers reported having preventive measures in place when losses occurred. Bayesian Network analysis confirmed that grazing clover‐based pastures for more than 7 days, yearling cattle and the months of July–September were the main risk factors for bloat occurrence, with pasture type (clover) being the most important. Conversely, no clear relationship between weather conditions and bloat occurrence was evident. This survey highlights the known risk of clover‐based pastures for causing bloat in cattle, and that losses occur in many cases despite preventive measures being used. Simple Summary: Best practice guidelines are available for the management of Maternal and Merino ewes across southern Australia; however, these are lacking for Composite and shedding breeds. Through a telephone interview, the management practices of a unique group of southern Australian sheep producers, and the motivations behind these practices, were explored. A large proportion of respondents reported mating and lambing practices that aligned with best practice guidelines; however, a smaller cohort did not see value in meeting the nutritional and mating length recommendations. Additionally, most producers are also seeking new information frequently and have implemented management changes within the last five years. Further work is required to understand the perceived barriers to best practice adoption, and for management guidelines to be developed for all sheep breeds to ensure sheep enterprises are operating in the most productive and profitable manner. The management of ewes across southern Australia may vary with breed and can change over time and, as such, a greater understanding of producer management practices and the motivations that influence these practices is required. A cross-sectional study was performed by telephone interview with sheep producers managing Composite, Maternal, Merino or shedding ewe breeds mated in either spring, summer, or autumn. The surveyed producers were a unique subset of southern Australian producers. A large proportion of the surveyed producers followed current best practice guidelines for ewe mating and lambing nutritional management; however, some producers did not align with these targets. Further, some producers did not see the value in attaining the current recommendations. Pregnancy scanning was widely practiced, likely an artefact of the recruitment process; however, a few producers did not utilize this information for nutritional management at lambing time. Finally, most producers were active in their search for new information, seeking information regularly from a wide range of sources and reported making management changes within the last five years. Further work is required to understand why some producers are not adopting best practice where possible and to understand current barriers for adoption. Planned fire is increasingly recognized as an important tool in conservation, but other factors such as land‐use change may hinder the ability of land managers to use fire for the benefit of biodiversity. The mosaic of past fires in native vegetation may interact with the mosaic of other land‐cover types in human‐modified landscapes, yet the effects of these interactions on mammal communities are unknown. We investigated the responses of ground‐dwelling mammal community composition and species richness to interactions between land cover and post‐fire vegetation growth‐stage mosaics in southern Australia. This fire‐prone, human‐modified landscape features a fine‐scale fire mosaic in native vegetation patches surrounded by pasture, horticulture, and peri‐urban environments. We measured the composition of land‐cover types and fire mosaics (landscape structure) at multiple scales of up to 1257 ha surrounding 129 study sites, and considered native and introduced species together and separately. Land‐cover composition was the primary driver of community composition: native species favored areas with a greater proportion of native heathy woodland, whereas introduced species were associated with landscapes comprising more cleared land. The fire mosaic also influenced community composition and species richness: greater growth‐stage diversity was associated with native habitat‐specialist communities and fewer introduced species. In areas with more cleared land, native species richness increased when there was a greater proportion of mid‐successional vegetation, demonstrating that the effect of fire mosaics on mammal diversity depended on land‐cover composition. The positive relationship between introduced species richness and cleared land extent was also stronger in recently burned sites than in other growth stages, suggesting that introduced species are well suited to more modified areas of the landscape. Land managers need to consider the underlying land‐cover composition and the potential interactions it may have with fire mosaics and species composition. In this landscape a greater diversity of growth stages may disadvantage introduced species yet an increase in mid‐successional vegetation in more modified areas would be likely to benefit native mammal communities. Climate scientists routinely rely on averaging over time or space to simplify complex information and to concisely communicate findings. Currently, no consistent definitions of ‘warm' or ‘cool' seasons for southern Australia exist, making comparisons across studies difficult. Similarly, numerous climate studies in Australia use either arbitrarily defined areas or the Natural Resource Management (NRM) clusters to perform spatial averaging. While the NRM regions were informed by temperature and rainfall information, they remain somewhat arbitrary. Here we use weather type influence on rainfall and clustering methods to quantitatively define climatic regions and seasons over southern Australia. Three methods are explored: k-means clustering and two agglomerative clustering methods, Ward linkage and average linkage. K-means was found to be preferred in temporal clustering, while the average linkage method was preferred for spatial clustering. For southern Australia as a whole, we define the cool season as April–September and warm season as October–March, though we note that a three-season split may provide more nuanced climate analysis. We also show that different regions across southern Australia experience different seasons and demonstrate the changing spatial influence of weather types with the seasons, which may aid regionally or seasonally specific climate analysis. Division of southern Australia into 15 climatic regions shows localised agreement with the NRM clusters where distinct differences in rainfall amounts exist. However, the climate regions defined here better represent the importance of topographical aspect on weather type influence and the inland extent of particular weather types. We suggest that the use of these regions would provide consistent climate analysis across studies if widely adopted. A key requirement for climate scientists is the simplification of data sets into both seasonally or regionally averaged subsets. This simplification, by grouping like regions or seasons, is done for a number of reasons both scientific and practical, including to help understand patterns of variability, underlying drivers and trends in climate and weather, to communicate large amounts of data concisely, to reduce the amount of data required for processing (which becomes increasingly important with higher resolution climate model output), or to more simply draw a physical boundary between regions for other purposes, such as flora and fauna habitat analysis, appropriate agricultural practices or water management.

Abstract We surveyed mitochondrial, autosomal, and Z chromosome diversity within and between the Copperback Quail‐thrush Cinclosoma clarum and Chestnut Quail‐thrush C. castanotum, which together span the arid and semi‐arid zones of southern Australia, and primarily from specimens held in museum collections. We affirm the recent taxonomic separation of the two species and then focus on diversity within the more widespread of the two species, C. clarum. To guide further study of the system and what it offers to understanding the genomics of the differentiation and speciation processes, we develop and present a hypothesis to explain mitonuclear discordance that emerged in ourdata. Following a period of historical allopatry, secondary contact has resulted in an eastern mitochondrial genome replacing the western mitochondrial genome in western populations. This is predicted under a population‐level invasion in the opposite direction, that of the western population invading the range of the eastern one. Mitochondrial captures can be driven by neutral, demographic processes, or adaptive mechanisms, and we favor the hypothesized capture being driven by neutral means. We cannot fully reject the adaptive process but suggest how these alternatives may be further tested. We acknowledge an alternative hypothesis, which finds some support in phenotypic data published elsewhere, namely that outcomes of secondary contact have been more complex than our current genomic data suggest. Discriminating and reconciling these two alternative hypotheses, which may not be mutually exclusive, could be tested with closer sampling at levels of population, individual, and nucleotide than has so far been possible. This would be further aided by knowledge of the genetic basis to phenotypic variation described elsewhere.

The extant pig‐nosed turtle (Carettochelys insculpta), persisting in far northern Australia and southern New Guinea, is the last surviving member of Carettochelyidae and the only non‐Gondwanan freshwater turtle lineage in Australia. Despite having a global fossil record dating to the Cretaceous, the absence of carettochelyid fossils from Australia has implied a relatively recent colonization of this landmass. Here we report an upper Miocene to lower Pliocene carettochelyid fossil from Beaumaris, Victoria, in south‐eastern Australia. This record is the most southerly occurrence of the clade Carettochelyidae. The presence of carettochelyids in southern Australia, and a discontinuous record of trionychids (soft‐shell turtles) in the Cenozoic of Queensland, suggests at least two colonizations of Australia by Trionychia, pre‐dating the extant pig‐nosed turtle. This cryptic southern history of tropical soft‐shell and pig‐nosed turtles ended before the recent aridification of Australia, leaving the Gondwanan side‐necked turtles as the dominant turtle group in Australian freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, this singular fossil reveals a previously unknown shift in the diversity and evolutionary history of freshwater turtles in Australia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peesey Swamp on southern Yorke Peninsula, southern Australia, is a north-northwesterly—south-southeasterly trending lowland depression, approximately 24 km long and 4 to 10 km wide. The richly fossiliferous mollusc and foraminiferal faunal assemblages of the last interglacial Glanville Formation in Peesey Swamp indicate that the paleoenvironment was a low- to medium-energy, sheltered sandflat to shallow-water seaway during the Last Interglacial Maximum (Marine Isotope Substage [MIS] 5e; 128–116 ka). The presence of the fossil bivalve molluscs Katelysia rhytiphora, Chlamys (Equichlamys) bifrons and Fulvia tenuicostata, in life position, indicate that the paleowater depth was ≤4 m in Peesey Swamp. The seaway cut across southern Yorke Peninsula, establishing a marine connection between southern Spencer Gulf and Investigator Strait during deposition of these taxa. Amino acid racemisation dating of the fossil marine molluscs Katelysia sp. and Fulvia tenuicostata confirms that the shelly assemblages at Peesey Swamp are correlative with the last interglacial Glanville Formation, a succession of richly fossiliferous, mixed quartz–skeletal carbonate sands documented from many sites along the southern Australian coastline. This study illustrates the significant changes in the geographical configuration of coastlines that may accompany relatively modest (<5 m) sea-level changes on low-gradient coastal landscapes. Peesey Swamp on southern Yorke Peninsula was flooded by seawater forming a 4 to 10 km-wide seaway during the Last Interglacial Maximum (MIS 5e). Fossil mollusc and foraminiferal assemblages reveal deposition within shallow subtidal to intertidal sandflat environments indicating that the paleowater depth and height of sea-level in Peesey Swamp was ≤4 m. Amino acid racemisation dating of fossil marine molluscs confirms that the shelly assemblages at Peesey Swamp are of last interglacial (MIS 5e) age. The distribution of the foraminifer Marginopora vertebralis indicates that the eastward flow of the warm-water Leeuwin Current, during the Last Interglacial Maximum, was retarded by the biogeographical barriers of Kangaroo Island and Fleurieu Peninsula. Morphology and mitochondrial DNA sequence data are used to reassess the taxonomy of Australian diving beetles previously assigned to the genera Uvarus Guignot, 1939 and Gibbidessus Watts, 1978. Gibbidessus was described as a monotypic genus for Gibbidessus chipi Watts, 1978. The genus is significantly extended here. Based on molecular systematic evidence, Uvarus pictipes (Lea, 1899) is transferred to Gibbidessus. Gibbidessus chipi and Gibbidessus pictipes comb. nov. are redescribed, and six new species are described: Gibbiddessus atomus sp. nov. (SW Australia, Northcliffe area) [the smallest epigean diving beetle in Australia], G. davidi sp. nov. (SW Australia), G. drikdrikensis sp. nov. (Victoria), G. kangarooensis sp. nov. (SA Kangaroo Island), G. pederzanii sp. nov. (SW Australia, Nannup area), and G. rottnestensis sp. nov. (SW Australia). Species are delineated using characters such as male genital structure and beetle size, shape and colour pattern. Mitochondrial Cox1 data for 27 individuals, representing five species, were generated, and revealed clusters congruent with the morphological evidence. Gibbidessus occur in southern Australia, with the centre of diversification in the isolated peat- and wetlands of SW Australia. The concept of the road-effect zone has been developed and researched predominantly in the Northern Hemisphere. This study measures the extent of road impacts into a temperate eucalypt forest ecosystem in southeastern Australia. The Epsom-Barnadown Road is a two-lane arterial road connecting regional centres in northern Victoria to the City of Greater Bendigo. Passing through the Bendigo Regional Park, the Epsom-Barnadown Road carries more than 1,600 vehicles per day. Transects of 1 km in length cited perpendicular to the road were established to measure road impacts on the flora and fauna of box-ironbark forest. Exotic vegetation was found to extend about 50 m from the road. Traffic noise and light penetration varied according to topography and vegetation cover, but averaged of 350 m and 380 m, respectively, from the road. Mammal surveys indicated there was an increase in species richness once traffic noise reached ambient levels (40 dB) and traffic light penetration ceased. Bird surveys resulted in the identification of four species (9%) that only occurred within 150 m of the road (edge species) and 21 species (58%) that only occurred at distances of 150 m or more from the Epsom-Barnadown Road (interior species). A core habitat area for bird species was identified at about 900 m from the road. It was found that the average width of forest in the Bendigo Regional Park impacted by the Epsom-Barnadown Road was 1800 m, which translates to an area of 1.8 km² per kilometre of road.

Using single nucleotide polymorphisms and mitochondrial DNA sequences we find some evidence of genetic structure within a widespread and naturally fragmented species, the purple-gaped honeyeater (Lichenostomus cratitius), of southern Australian mallee shrublands. The very earliest stages of differentiation either side of the Nullarbor Barrier may already have been arrested by gene flow, some of which may have been anthropogenically induced. Long-nosed fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) were tagged as pups in colonies on Kangaroo Island, South Australia in eight consecutive pupping seasons from 1988–89 to 1995–96. Thirty-nine tagged animals were sighted on the southern Australian coast, being 0.89% of those tagged. They were aged from 9 months to 14 years 6 months, with half in their second and third years. Most records (88%) were of animals that moved eastwards. The most distant records were from Sydney in the east (1700 km), south of Tasmania in the south (1240 km) and Head of Bight in the west (700 km). One animal was seen twice, both times on the north coast of Kangaroo Island, once underwater and two years later ashore. Satellite telemetry studies of juvenile A. forsteri from Kangaroo Island showed that they typically forage in pelagic waters ~1000 km further south in association with the subtropical front. The study reported here shows that some animals tagged as pups disperse widely as juveniles around the southern Australian coast. The possibility of genetic interchange between breeding colonies is suggested by sightings of three tagged females aged 4 years and older at non-natal colonies. Long-nosed fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) tagged as pups on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, were recorded on the southern Australian coast between Sydney and Head of Bight. Abstract The Bass Basin, a Mesozoic-Cenozoic intra-continental rift basin along the southern Australian continental shelf, offers an excellent natural laboratory for examining igneous rocks in the subsurface. Igneous material within the basin is manifested as a mixture of predominately mafic extrusive and intrusive rocks, mainly Cretaceous-Palaeocene and Oligocene-Miocene in age. Igneous rocks have been encountered in 20 out of 36 (55.6%) exploration wells drilled within the Bass Basin, but the presence of these has historically been poorly predicted; of the first 11 exploration wells to penetrate igneous rocks, their presence was not predicted in pre-drill interpretations. We present a series of case studies from wells that unexpectedly encountered igneous rocks. The first of these wells (Bass-1) targeted a carbonate reef structure which instead penetrated the flank of a submarine volcano. In another notable example (Flinders-1 well), a relatively discontinuous high-amplitude seismic reflection thought to be a clastic reservoir was found to be an igneous intrusion with a relatively unusual composition. A number of these incidents, where igneous rocks were unexpectedly encountered, can be accounted for by human factors, such as a sparsity of good quality data and a lack of knowledge transfer as companies entered and left basin during different phases of exploration. However, a number of examples, particularly the unexpected occurrence of igneous intrusions, appear to have been caused by anomalously low acoustic impedance contrasts between igneous rocks and surrounding sedimentary sequences. Our findings have generic implications for other sedimentary basins impacted by magmatic activity, such as the importance of integrating available outcrop data in the absence of nearby well control, and the value of fully appraising previous exploration results. Highlights • The Bass Basin is a Mesozoic-Cenozoic intra-continental rift basin along southern Australian. • Igneous rocks encountered in 20 out of 36 (55.6%) exploration wells drilled within the Bass Basin. • In 13 of 20 exploration wells (65%) the igneous rocks encountered were not predicted pre-drill. • Low impedance contrast between igneous and sedimentary rocks in Bass Basin relative to other magmatic basins (e.g. North Atlantic Margin). Aim: To document biogeographic patterns in the deepwater benthic epifauna and demersal fishes of southern Australia, and determine whether museum records and systematic survey data provide matching results. Location: Southern Australian (32–44oS) continental slope (200–3,000 m deep). Taxon: Marine benthic fauna (Arthropoda, Bryozoa, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Porifera, Sipuncula, and fishes). Methods: All available electronic records of fauna from the above taxa and ≥200 m depth off the southern Australian coastline, regardless of organism size, were collated from Australian museums and checked for geographic and taxonomic consistency. These records were then split into 40 geographic segments of roughly equal numbers, with each segment then treated as a sample in multivariate analyses of assemblage composition. Data from a recent (2015) systematic beam trawl survey along five north–south transects in the central Great Australian Bight were also included for comparison. Main conclusions: The systematic survey data grouped with the associated geographic segments despite differences in sampling technique (single gear compared to multiple gears), with subsequent differences in taxonomic biases, and the use of a 25 mm mesh, which would undersample some smaller organisms present in the museum data. Thus, the museum data and the survey data provided the same results for the central Great Australian Bight at the level of the whole assemblage. The main biogeographic break occurred off southeastern Tasmania, with a second substantial break occurring at around the border between New South Wales and Victoria. This indicates the potential for unused museum data to describe biogeographic patterns over regional spatial scales, especially in the deep sea where the expense of collecting new data is relatively high. Historical data from Australian museum records are used to develop a deep‐sea biogeography for the southern Australian continental slope and indicate that the under‐sampled south‐facing coastline is distinct from the more heavily sampled eastern coastline. A recent systematic survey of the central Great Australian Bight on the south coast showed similar assemblage structure to that derived from the ad hoc collection of samples from close to 200 years represented in the museum collections. The widely distributed genus Codium is a major component of the marine macroalgal flora and has its largest species diversity in warm-temperate regions. Along the South coast of Australia, Codium is a diverse group, but the species diversity in the easternmost region of Victoria is not well-documented. In this study, we characterized the species diversity of Codium from Croajingolong National Park, Gabo Island Lighthouse Reserve and Cape Howe Marine National Park. The specimens were collected from a wide range of microhabitats during an expedition of the Bush Blitz program, and Codium species were delimited through a combination of molecular analyses of the chloroplast markers tufA and rbcL, and morphological observations. Six species-level clusters were found, corresponding to the native C. australicum, C. harveyi, C. lucasii.1 and C. fragile subsp. novae-zelandiae; and the exotic C. fragile subsp. fragile and C. tenue. The specimens of C. australicum showed variability in the architecture of the thallus that was attributed to the different habitats where they were collected. The utricles of C. harveyi were unusual in having a thick apical cell wall that protruded inwards and had internal projections. The species found in eastern Victoria are typical of the Flindersian and Peronian biogeographic provinces, and the low diversity of Codium species in this region is comparable to that of New South Wales. Summary: The past 30 years of restoration activities in Australia has been mere cautious fiddling in the face of continental‐wide native habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation. A fundamental principle of conservation is to address threats at the scale of the threatening processes. This is still not happening for two reasons: we do not know how to effectively restore at scale, and if we did, there is no demand because it does not pay. The first problem of developing the technologies needed for large‐scale revegetation will largely be solved if we collectively demand revegetation at scale. Such a scale of demand by Australian governments (taxpayers) is only likely if a permanent Natural Heritage Trust is created for long‐term funding complemented by a price on carbon pollution. That will take a lot of political will. The other big opportunity is to create demand for large‐scale revegetation cofunded by farmers to improve their farm's long‐term productivity, resilience and economic viability. This requires sustained R&D supported by novel partnerships with the massive Australian agricultural market. Native vegetation must move from the margins to the mainstream if scale is to be achieved. Abstract: Populations of broadcast spawning marine organisms often have large sizes and are exposed to reduced genetic drift. Under such scenarios, strong selection associated with spatial environmental heterogeneity is expected to drive localized adaptive divergence, even in the face of connectivity. We tested this hypothesis using a seascape genomics approach in the commercially important greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata). We assessed how its population structure has been influenced by environmental heterogeneity along a zonal coastal boundary in southern Australia linked by strong oceanographic connectivity. Our data sets include 9,109 filtered SNPs for 371 abalones from 13 localities and environmental mapping across ~800 km. Genotype–environment association analyses and outlier tests defined 8,786 putatively neutral and 323 candidate adaptive loci. From a neutral perspective, the species is better represented by a metapopulation with very low differentiation (global FST = 0.0081) and weak isolation by distance following a stepping‐stone model. For the candidate adaptive loci, however, model‐based and model‐free approaches indicated five divergent population clusters. After controlling for spatial distance, the distribution of putatively adaptive variation was strongly correlated to selection linked to minimum sea surface temperature and oxygen concentration. Around 80 candidates were annotated to genes with functions related to high temperature and/or low oxygen tolerance, including genes that influence the resilience of abalone species found in other biogeographic regions. Our study includes a documented example about the uptake of genomic information in fisheries management and supports the hypothesis of adaptive divergence due to coastal environmental heterogeneity in a connected metapopulation of a broadcast spawner. Reports of bitumen stranding on the ocean beaches of southern Australia date back to the early days of European settlement. Previous investigations have shown that this ‘coastal bitumen’ comprises three categories of stranded petroleum: waxy bitumen, asphaltite and oil slicks. All three varieties are physically and chemically distinct from each other, and bear no geochemical resemblance to any indigenous Australian crude oil. This study focuses on the most common variety, waxy bitumen, which accounted for 90% of the strandings on six South Australian beaches repeatedly surveyed during 1991–1992. Geochemical analysis of 96 individual specimens collected from these survey sites and other beaches in South Australia and western Victoria has shown them to be variously weathered high-wax crude oils of paraffinic to aromatic-intermediate bulk composition. Elemental, isotopic and biomarker differences allow their assignment to at least five oil families with inferred source facies that range from deep freshwater lacustrine through paludal and deltaic to euxinic marine, possibly deposited within different sedimentary basins. Family 1, 2 and 3 waxy bitumens all contain biomarkers derived from the freshwater alga Botryococcus sp. and tropical angiosperms (notably dipterocarps). Similar biomarker assemblages are unknown in Australian sedimentary basins but are common in Cenozoic crude oils and source rocks throughout western Indonesia. Family 4 waxy bitumens lack these biomarkers, but do contain dinosterane and 24- n -propylcholestane, indicative of a marine source affinity, while the carbon isotopic signatures and high pristane/phytane (Pr/Ph) ratios of Family 5 waxy bitumens are consistent with their origin from coal-rich source rocks deposited in fluvial to deltaic sedimentary successions. The majority of these waxy bitumens represent an oceanic influx of non-indigenous, Southeast Asian crude oils carried into the waters of southern Australia by the Leeuwin Current. Although they are likely to originate from natural seepage within the Indonesian Archipelago, it is unknown whether the parent oils emanate from submarine seeps or from inland seepages which are then carried to the sea by rivers. Macroalgae are a rich source of biologically active chemical diversity for pharmaceutical and agrichemical discovery. However, the ability to understand the complexities of their chemical diversity will dictate whether these natural products have a place in modern discovery paradigms. In this study, we examined the relationship between secondary metabolite production and biological activity for a cohort of 127 macroalgae samples collected from various locations across South Eastern Australia. Approximately 20% of the macroalgae samples showed high levels of chemical diversity and productivity, which also correlated strongly with bioactivity. These “talented” species represent sustainable sources of metabolites that may be readily harvested for large-scale production. At a taxonomic level, significant differences in metabolite production and diversity were observed between Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta. For each talented species, the cometabolite pattern was unique to that species, with closely related species within the same genus displaying very different profiles. Despite over 50 years of investigation, we estimate that more than two-thirds of the chemical diversity of macroalgae remains unknown to science. By understanding the physicochemical properties and distribution patterns of metabolites, it is possible to make reasoned judgements about sustainable sourcing of macroalgae for biodiscovery. Yorke Peninsula in southern Australia is an important region for reconstructing relative sea-level histories due to its location on the eastern margin of the tectonically stable Gawler Craton and in one of the world's geographically most remote far-field locations from the Pleistocene ice sheets. Richly fossiliferous, skeletal carbonate sands of the last interglacial (125 ka) Glanville Formation crop out in the coastal cliffs along large sectors of southern Yorke Peninsula. Sedimentary facies include deepening-upward intertidal to shallow subtidal facies, relict storm beach facies and cobble and boulder beach deposits in more exposed, higher energy locations. During deposition of the Glanville Formation, southern Yorke Peninsula had a different coastal geography with two prominent marine corridors extending across the southern-most portion of the entire peninsula. In a 3 km long coastal cliff section in southern Hardwicke Bay, the Glanville Formation crops out as an upward-deepening intertidal-subtidal succession capped by supratidal and subaerially-exposed sediments with pervasive calcrete development. The sedimentary succession passes upwards from a basal unit of intertidal sand flat facies with abundant gastropods ( Batillaria diemenensis ) near the upper bounding (disconformity) surface, upwards into richly fossiliferous shelly sands (coquina) representing a shallow subtidal facies formed by sediment aggradation in response to a relative sea-level rise. The subtidal facies is dominated by the bivalve molluscs Katelysia sp. and Amesodesma angusta, signifying a water deepening event. The subtidal facies is in turn overlain by pedogenically modified skeletal carbonate sands with pervasive calcrete development signifying a relative sea level fall at the end of the Last Interglacial Maximum. The upper-bounding surface of the shallow-water subtidal facies ranges from 2.4 to 3.0 m Australian Height Datum (AHD) and by analogy with modern sedimentary environments suggests a maximum palaeo-sea level of 4.8 ± 1.0 m during the Last Interglacial Maximum. Uranium-series ages of 127.3 ± 2.1 to 115.0 ± 5.4 ka on specimens of the solitary coral Plesiastrea versipora from the subtidal facies confirm that the succession was deposited during the Last Interglacial Maximum, and are consistent with the independent stratigraphical evidence that the highstand event was represented by a single phase of relative sea-level rise. Three major seismic events have damaged the Old Exchange Building, Adelaide, southern Australia. The building was graced by the Britannia statue on the parapet of the building. The statue lost its arm during the 1897 Beachport earthquake and bowed its helmeted head during the 1902 Warooka seismic event. It was removed after the 1954 Adelaide earthquake. Local site effects contributed significantly to the destruction of the Britannia statue. This paper investigates and presents the historical local site effects with respect to the Old Exchange Building. Synthetic ground motion time histories of the past three seismic events are generated and confirm the suitability of the method. Representative 1D soil profiles are developed and validated. Site response analysis was then carried out at the Old Exchange Building site to obtain the seismic parameters at the investigated site. The results are compared against historical intensity maps of the events, which are assumed as the actual spectral accelerations during the events. Hazard spectra and amplification triggered by the seismic events are deduced. This study reveals the significance of local site effects by an amplification factor of up to 3.4 that led to the destruction of the Britannia statue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Western Whipbird (Psophodes nigrogularis) has a highly disjunct west–east distribution across southern Australia. Earlier morphological analyses recognised four subspecies in one species:P. n. nigrogularisandP. n. oberonin south-west Western Australia, andP. n. leucogasterof the Eyre and Yorke Peninsulas and the Murray Mallee, andP. n. lashmari, restricted to Kangaroo Island, both in eastern Australia. Later morphological analyses elevatedP. n. nigrogularisto monotypic species rank, and placed the remaining western and two eastern taxa as three subspecies of a second speciesP. leucogaster. Initial mtDNA analysis questioned both arrangements but could not include all taxa. We used mtDNA sequence data from all available specimens of the entire group (DNA extracted from cryo-preserved tissues, toe-pads and feathers; holotypes excepted) to derive a more stable view of species limits. The samples fell into two strongly divergent but geographically structured groups, completely reflecting the eastern and western components of the distribution. Thus we see merit in treating the two geographical groupings as two species,P. nigrogularisin the west andP. leucogasterin the east, each having two subspecies. Australia's Gippsland Basin contains a semi-continuous Eocene-Oligocene (41.5–28.4 Ma) near-coastal coal record that formed adjacent to Pacific Ocean. Traralgon and Morwell Formation brown coals include 4 main seams (T2, T1, T0, M2). Coal seam palynology records show late Middle Eocene (T2) coals formed under megathermic conditions characterized by high-gymnosperm contents, Late Eocene (T1) coals formed under mesothermic conditions characterized by reduced-gymnosperm contents and earliest indications of palaeoclimate cooling. Earliest Oligocene T0 coal record (33.9–31.5 Ma) contains high-gymnosperm palynology profile, very similar to the T2 coals. The earliest indication of cooler climes only begins after this coal formed as indicated by low-gymnosperm high-Nothofagus (southern beech) pollen proportions. We suggest in Gippsland the earliest evidence for major glacial cooling (by inference the Oi1 event) be placed immediately above the T0 coal seam where Early to Late Oligocene Morwell Formation sands, clays and coals contain low counts of gymnosperms (< 10%) but high average proportions of Nothofagus (50%). This is the main definitive indicator that palaeoclimates had cooled between the Eocene and Oligocene. This agrees with the current ocean drilling position of the earliest (Oi1) glacial event shortly above the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. A number of contemporaneous Middle to Late Eocene brown coals occurred in near-coastal settings across 1200 km of southern Australia. Palaeogeographically, all these coal basins faced the Australo-Antarctic Gulf and have a much lower gymnosperm proportion (< 10%), low Nothofagus proportion (< 10%), but very high (non- Nothofagus ) angiosperms proportion. This suggests a different climatic regime separated a cooler and wetter Gippsland Basin flora that responded to the cooler Proto-Ross Sea Gyre rotating around a wide Pacific Ocean, and a warm-wet climate associated with a warm proto-Leeuwin current of the Australo-Antarctic Gulf. Many aquatic ecosystems in Australia are impacted or threatened by salinisation; however, there is a paucity of records detailing the changes in salinity of individual water bodies that extend beyond a few decades. One way to overcome this issue is the use of inference models, which have typically been based on biological proxies. This pilot project investigates the potential for mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) to provide an alternative method of reconstructing past salinity levels in Australian lakes. A small (19 lakes) calibration dataset was used to develop a MIRS-based lake water salinity inference model (measured vs. inferred salinity, based on leave-one-out cross-validation, R2 = 0.64). This model and a previously published diatom-salinity model were both used to infer salinity levels in Tower Hill Lake in south-eastern Australia, over the last 60 years. Comparisons between these reconstructions and measured salinity data from Tower Hill Lake indicate that salinities inferred by the MIRS model more closely resembled the measured values than those produced using the diatom model, predominantly in terms of the actual values inferred, but also with regard to the trends observed. The Kingscote Limestone is a thin, biofragmental ~ 41 m thick Paleogene subtropical to cool-temperate carbonate interpreted to have accumulated in a seaway developed between a series of mid-shelf islands. It is a pivotal section that allows interpretation of a region in which there is little exposure of early Cenozoic shelf sediments. Sedimentation occurred on part of the shelf along the northern margin of an extensive Eocene embayment that evolved into a narrow Oligocene ocean following collapse of the Tasman Gateway. Eocene strata are subtropical echinoid-rich floatstones with conspicuous bryozoans, and mollusks, together with large and small benthic foraminifers. Numerous echinoid rudstone storm deposits punctuate the succession. Correlation with coeval Eocene strata across southern Australia supports a regional facies model wherein inner neritic biosiliceous spiculitic sediments passed outboard into calcareous facies. The silica was derived from land covered by a thriving subtropical forest and attendant deep weathering. Oligocene rocks are distinctively cooler cyclic cross-bedded bryozoan rudstones and floatstones with a similar benthic biota but dominated by bryozoans and containing no large benthic foraminifers. These deposits are interpreted as flood-dominated tidal subaqueous dunes that formed in a flood-tide dominated inter-island strait. Omission surfaces at the top of the Eocene and at the top of most Oligocene cycles are Fe-stained hardgrounds that underwent extensive multigeneration seafloor and meteoric diagenesis prior to deposition of the next cycle. Cycles in the Kingscote Limestone, although mostly m-scale and compositionally distinct are similar to those across the region and point to a recurring cycle motif controlled by icehouse eustasy and local paleogeography. 1 1 Formerly J. A hydroid colony from Port Phillip, southern Australia, yielded two new species, Sertularella eleganta and Bimeria lutea and a new record of Campanularia laminocarpa Millard, 1966, previously known from South Africa. The last interglacial maximum (Marine Isotope Substage 5e [MIS 5e], 128–116 ka) is a distinctive event in recent Earth history. Shoreline successions of this age are important for calibrating climate models and defining the overall behaviour of the crust–mantle system to fluctuating ice and ocean-water volumes. In a global context, the recently intensified interest in last interglacial shoreline successions has revealed considerable variability in the magnitude of sea-level rise during this time interval and highlighted the need to examine paleosea-level evidence from tectonically stable, far-field settings. Situated in the far-field of continental ice sheets and on the tectonically stable Gawler Craton, the 300 km coastal sector of western Eyre Peninsula between Fowlers Bay and Lake Newland in southern Australia represents an important region for defining the glacio-eustatic (ice-equivalent) sea-level attained during the last interglacial maximum based on the relative sea-level observations from this region. Low-energy, shoaling upward, peritidal bioclastic carbonate successions of the last interglacial (locally termed Glanville Formation) formed within back-barrier, estuarine–lagoonal environments in the lee of eolianite barrier complexes (locally termed Bridgewater Formation) along this coastline. The well-preserved shelly successions (coquinas) contain diverse molluscan fossil assemblages including species no longer living in the coastal waters of South Australia (e.g. the Sydney cockleAnadara trapeziaand the benthic foraminiferMarginopora vertebralis). The extent of amino acid racemisation (a measure of fossil age based on increasingd/lvalue) in a range of species, and in particularA. trapeziaandKatelysiasp., confirms the time equivalence of the isolated embayment-fill successions, correlated with the informal type section of the Glanville Formation at Dry Creek, north of Adelaide. Preliminary U-series analyses onA. trapeziaalso suggest a correlation with the last interglacial maximum, but further highlight the complexity in dating fossil molluscs by the U-series method in view of their open-system behaviour. The shelly successions of the Glanville Formation occur at elevations higher than attained by sea-level in the current, Holocene interglacial. A higher sea-level of between 2.1 ± 0.5 and 4 ± 0.5 m above present sea-level is inferred for the last interglacial maximum (MIS 5e) along this coastline based on the elevation of sedimentary successions host to the shallow subtidal–intertidal fossil molluscsKatelysiasp., andAnadara trapezia. The paleosea-level observations place a lower limit on the sea-level attained during the last interglacial maximum and suggest that caution be exercised in the definition of the upper limit of sea-level during this interglacial. Robe Range is a coastal barrier that extends for over 155 km along the modern coastline of the Coorong Coastal Plain in southern Australia, a region renowned as preserving one of the world's longest records of Quaternary eolian dune deposition. Previous research has shown that the late Pleistocene dune development in this barrier structure is linked with sea-level highstands, particularly warm interstadials of marine isotope stage (MIS) 5. To better understand the principal depositional phases and sediment provenance of the dune successions of Robe Range, we use a combination of amino acid racemization analyses on the foraminifer Lamellodiscorbis dimidiatus and optically stimulated luminescence dating of associated quartz sand. The new and previously published optical dating results indicate that phases of dune formation correlate with MIS 5c–a (ca. 105–75 ka) and early in MIS 3 (ca. 61–53 ka). More importantly, the distribution of the extent of amino acid racemization on single-foraminifers reveals that the overall barrier successions have complex sources of carbonate sediment, principally derived from contemporaneous inner shelf temperate carbonate factories and reworked skeletal grains from the erosion of older marginal marine successions. The regional narrowing of the Bonney Shelf restricted the degree of lateral changes of the shoreline in response to the glacial–interglacial cycles, in contrast to the wider Lacepede Shelf to the north. The characteristics of offshore shelf topography allow wind-driven onshore transport and delivery of bioclastic sand from mixed-age carbonate sources to onshore coastal dunes during lower sea levels, particularly in association with the intensified wind regime of early MIS 3. This points to other factors influencing coastal dune emplacement besides simply glacio–eustatic sea-level changes, and relates to the availability of biogenic particles and the delicate balance between shelf topography and wind regimes during the interstadials of the late Pleistocene. • Amino acid racemization and OSL were used to date eolianites of Robe Range, southern Australia. • Coastal dune development is associated with MIS 5c–a and early MIS 3. • Eolianites were continuously sourced from mixed-age bioclastics, including reworked sediments. • Local-scale factors play a role in the timing of dune accretion along with global sea-level changes. Aeolianites are integral components of many modern and ancient carbonate depositional systems. Southern Australia contains some of the most impressive and extensive late Cenozoic aeolianites in the modern world. Pleistocene aeolianites on Yorke Peninsula are sculpted into imposing seacliffs up to 60 m high and comprise two distinct imposing complexes of the Late Pleistocene Bridgewater Formation. The lower aeolianite complex, which forms the bulk of the cliffs, is a series of stacked palaeodunes and intervening palaeosols. The diagenetic low Mg-calcite sediment particles are mostly bivalves, echinoids, bryozoans and small benthic foraminifera. This association is similar to sediments forming offshore today on the adjacent shelf in a warm-temperate ocean. By contrast, the upper aeolianite complex is a series of mineralogically metastable biofragmental carbonates in a succession of stacked lenticular palaeodunes with impressive interbedded calcretes and palaeosols. Bivalves, geniculate coralline algae and benthic foraminifera, together with sparse peloids and ooids, dominate sediment grains. Fragments of large benthic foraminifera including Marginopora vertebralis, a photosymbiont-bearing protist, are particularly conspicuous. Palaeocean temperatures are interpreted as having been sub-tropical, somewhat warmer than offshore carbonate factories in the region today. The older aeolianite complex is tentatively correlated with Marine Isotope Stage 11, whereas the upper complex is equivalent to Marine Isotope Stage 5e. Marine Isotope Stage 5e deposits exposed elsewhere in southern Australia (Glanville Formation) are distinctive with a subtropical biota, including Marginopora vertebralis. Thus, in this example, palaeodune sediment faithfully records the nature of the adjacent inner neritic carbonate factory. By inference, aeolianites are potential repositories of information about the nature of long-vanished marine systems that have been removed due to erosion, tectonic obliteration or are inaccessible in the subsurface. The external morphology and movement of a living specimen of the minute gastropod Sukashitrochus pulcher (Petterd, 1884) is reported and the findings compared with the reported morphologies of other species of Sukashitrochus and scissurellids more generally. ABSTRACT We recorded a diverse cetacean assemblage from systematic aerial surveys in productive upwelling waters off southern Australia in 2002-2013. Surveys recorded 133 sightings of 15 identified cetacean species consisting of 7 mysticete (baleen) whale species, 8 odontocete (toothed) species, and 384 sightings of unidentified dolphins. This is the first assessment of cetacean diversity for the region and we found diversity to be comparable with other productive regions elsewhere. Differential spatial and temporal distributions of mysticete and odontocete species were apparent, and were associated with habitat variables and seasonal migration cycles. The study contributes new information to assist the environmental planning and management of activities in the region, including oil, and gas exploration and production, fishing, shipping, and renewable energy development. © 2015 The Wildlife Society. Altered fire regimes threaten biodiversity, but there is limited understanding of the mechanisms driving population declines. Relationships between mammal occurrence and time since fire can be unclear because mammals respond directly to changes in habitat structure rather than time since fire per se , and patterns of regeneration can be highly variable. Previous studies have examined how mammals respond to time since fire and habitat structure separately, but rarely considered the three factors together. Furthermore, fires may interact with other threats such as habitat loss and fragmentation, also rarely incorporated into fire studies but known to influence mammal communities. Understanding each of these mechanisms and how they interact is critical for using fire effectively in conservation. We simultaneously related ground-dwelling mammal species activity to habitat structure, habitat structure to post-fire vegetation growth stage, and species activity to growth stage and landscape structure (extent of heathy woodland vegetation) using structural equation models (SEMs). This allowed us to find direct effects of growth stage on mammals, indirect effects mediated by habitat structure, and additional effects of landscape structure. Understorey cover, litter depth, and coarse woody debris responded to growth stage and were important contributors in all SEMs. Four of seven mammal species responded to at least one habitat structure variable. None of the mammal species were related directly to growth stage, but mammals were indirectly related to growth stage through the mediating influence of habitat structure. For example, western grey kangaroos were linked to recently burnt sites, but only through their negative association with litter depth. Extent of heathy woodland vegetation was also an important driver of mammal activity and was related to all but one species; two species showed a positive relationship, and four negative. Important relationships between fire and ground-dwelling mammals may be overlooked unless changes in important habitat resources are also considered. Fire management planning for fauna conservation should incorporate habitat responses as mammal responses to the fire regime may be mediated by fire-driven changes in resources. Knowing how time since fire affects important habitat structures can improve the effectiveness of using fire to manipulate these to support mammal species. Our results will help land managers understand direct and indirect effects of fire in a landscape where multiple drivers threaten biodiversity, and guide the use of prescribed fire to promote aspects of habitat structure that benefit mammals. The Tertiary Limestone Aquifer (TLA) is one of the major regional hydrogeological systems of southern Australia. Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) of freshwater from the TLA occurs through spring creeks, beach springs and diffusively through beach sands, but the magnitude of the total flux is not known. Here, a range of potential environmental tracers (including temperature, salinity, 222 Rn, 223 Ra, 224 Ra, 226 Ra, 228 Ra, and 4 He) were measured in potential sources of SGD and in seawater along a 45 km transect off the coastline to evaluate SGD from the TLA. Whilst most tracers had a distinct signature in the sources of water to the coastline, salinity and the radium quartet had the most distinct SGD signal in seawater. A one-dimensional advection-dispersion model was used to estimate the terrestrial freshwater component of SGD ( Q fw ) using salinity and the recirculated seawater component ( Q rsw ) using radium activity in seawater. Q fw was estimated at 1.2–4.6 m 3 s −1 , similar in magnitude to previously measured spring creek discharge (∼3 m 3 s −1 ) for the area. This suggests that other terrestrial groundwater discharge processes (beach springs and diffuse discharge through beach sands) were no more than 50% of spring creek discharge. The largest component of total SGD was Q rsw , estimated at 500–1000 m 3 s −1 and possibly greater. The potential for wave, storm, or buoyancy-driven porewater displacement from the seafloor could explain the large recirculation flux for this section of the Southern Ocean Continental Shelf. Recent phylogeographic studies have examined the location and timing of putative Plio-Pleistocene bio-geographical barriers in moulding present-day patterns of diversity in southern Australian vertebrates. We previously investigated the divergence history of an assemblage of southern Australian birds. Here we more explicitly incorporate idiosyncratic effects of dietary ecology and habitat on the long-term demographic stability and the presence or absence of genetic structure on each of 12 species of bird. Our data suggest that the Eyrean Barrier (Flinders Ranges-Lake Eyre Basin) has been critical in shaping present-day diversity, especially that of mesic and mallee environments, and that other barriers (e.g. Murchison Barrier, Nullarbor Barrier) have played a lesser role. In contrast, nectarivory and occurrence in patchily distributed habitats are correlated with weak or no phylogeographic structure. Population expansions were most prevalent in western parts of species' ranges. Substantial genetic divergences accompanied by moderate or no phenotypic divergence challenge traditional approaches to taxonomy in the Blue Bonnet (Northiella haematogaster), Chestnut Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma castanotum), White-eared Honeyeater (Nesoptilotis leucotis) and Scarlet Robin (Petroica boodang) and we suggest taxonomic treatments for each of these species that accommodate existing data. We elevate some taxa to species rank and note where further analyses of gene flow will be useful in clarifying remaining issues. Further phylogeographic study in the region of the Mount Lofty Ranges, Flinders Ranges, Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent) of South Australia is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The genus Stylopallene comprising only four species is reviewed. All species are recorded from Australia, predominantly from the southern and south-eastern coastlines in association with arborescent bryozoans. Sexual dimorphism in the scape segments is recognized in the genus for the first time. The status of Stylopallene dorsospinum is re-evaluated and assigned to the new genus Bamberene. Natural variation describes the normal fluctuations that occur in ecosystems over time in the absence of significant human-driven disturbance, providing a buffer that facilitates ecological resilience. Long-term data on ecosystems are useful in developing baselines of natural variation and identifying the limits to resilience within different ecosystems. Here, we examined two contemporaneous vertebrate fossil assemblages of the Naracoorte Caves in southern Australia to determine the magnitude and extent of natural variation and resilience exhibited by a small-mammal paleocommunity through the last glacial cycle (c. 50-10 kyr BP). We also investigated the effect of sampling the assemblages at different timescales on observed patterns of variability and quantified sampling effects to test the robustness of the temporal trends. Our results show that the paleocommunity was structurally and compositionally stable through the early glacial period and last glacial maximum (LGM), with variability exhibited only in species abundances. Significant variability in species abundances, abundance ranks, and species richness during the post-LGM deglaciation reveals paleocommunity reorganization and a loss of resilience to climatic change at this time. A nearby marine-core record suggests that the paleocommunity reorganization was associated with sea-surface temperatures warming past 168C, postdating the onset of warming following the LGM by c. 1-3 kyr. This suggests that the paleocommunity was sensitive to specific temperature thresholds rather than shifts between warming or cooling trends per se. Our results also show that patterns of natural variability are sensitive to time-averaging, which can smooth out rapid and short-term changes and limit our capacity to temporally correlate faunal changes to their environmental or climatic drivers. The responses of the small-mammal paleocommunity conform to models derived from other paleontological and modern assemblages in which changes in species abundances may not always lead to community restructuring.
