The diverse climatic and geological history of Southeast Asia has been a driving force behind significant Pleistocene and Holocene range dynamics and the consequent biological diversification in the region. Among the species exhibiting wide distributions, extending across several well-known zoogeographic barriers, the Elongated Tortoise (Indotestudo elongata) is noted for its extensive variability in size, shape, and colouration. To examine phylogeographic differentiation within I. elongata, we analysed three mitochondrial gene fragments (ND4, cyt b, and COI) for 52 individuals including fourteen historic specimens and 25 sequences obtained from Gen- Bank. Phylogenetic analyses of the concatenated alignment revealed genetic homogeneity across the range, supported by a shallow mean uncorrected p distance of 1.2% in cyt b. This corresponds to a surprising lack of biogeographic structuring. Concordantly, multivariate statistical analyses of morphometric and colouration-related characters of 166 adult tortoises (79 males and 87 females) from Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam showed no statistically significant differences between biogeographic units. The lack of any phylogeographic signal and morphological differentiation despite the presence of significant biogeographic barriers is unusual for a terrestrial vertebrate from this region. Archaeological evidence suggests that Elongated Tortoises have been used as a food item for millennia. It could be that their current wide distribution and the absence of genetic differentiation are the result of a significant range expansion caused by extensive human-mediated dispersal over the prehistoric and historic tortoise trade. This essay examines the author's experience since 2018 in developing and teaching a third-year undergraduate course on the history of time at a Singapore university, for students specializing in East and Southeast Asian history and the history of technology. History courses are traditionally taught in a chronological format, with clear periodization, and a nearly exclusive focus on written and audiovisual "texts." The author has found that such an approach is less effective for a course on the history of time, a subject that suggests no obvious periodization or linear narrative, and for which many of his students lack a precise vocabulary. To solve these challenges, the author has borrowed autoethnographic exercises developed by scholars in other disciplines and assigned unconventional tasks such as building water clocks and curating time capsules. While the course has proven popular, it has also invited questions about what a global history of time looks like. Although the industrial and technological history of time is accessible to his students, much of the recent work on temporality presumes a familiarity with European and North American social and political issues that students outside of those regions may lack. The continuing expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative (formerly known as One Belt One Road) has attracted considerable commentary, but little attention has been given to the formation of alternative networks in Southeast Asia or to the earlier history of trade and trust networks centred in the temples and regional association offices of the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia. This paper examines the formation and continuing expansion of a horizontal network of Chinese temples dedicated to the tutelary god (Earth God) of the port cities of Southeast Asia. The World Dabogong Federation was founded in 2017 and is now 5 years old. It currently includes over 160 temples from over 100 port cities. S. 4,[5],12:i:-, a monophasic variant of S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, is an important multidrug resistant serovar. Strains of colistin-resistant S. 4,[5],12:i:- have been reported in several countries with patients occasionally had recent histories of travels to Southeast Asia. In the study herein, we investigated the genomes of S. 4,[5],12:i:- carrying mobile colistin resistance (mcr) gene in Thailand. Three isolates of mcr-3.1 carrying S. 4,[5],12:i:- in Thailand were sequenced by both Illumina and Oxford Nanopore platforms and we analyzed the sequences together with the whole genome sequences of other mcr-3 carrying S. 4,[5],12:i:- isolates available in the NCBI Pathogen Detection database. Three hundred sixty-nine core genome SNVs were identified from 27 isolates, compared to the S. Typhimurium LT2 reference genome. A maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree was constructed and revealed that the samples could be divided into three clades, which correlated with the profiles of fljAB-hin deletions and plasmids. A couple of isolates from Denmark had the genetic profiles similar to Thai isolates, and were from the patients who had traveled to Thailand. Complete genome assembly of the three isolates revealed the insertion of a copy of IS26 at the same site near iroB, suggesting that the insertion was an initial step for the deletions of fljAB-hin regions, the hallmark of the 4,[5],12:i:- serovar. Six types of plasmid replicons were identified with the majority being IncA/C. The coexistence of mcr-3.1 and blaCTX-M-55 was found in both hybrid-assembled IncA/C plasmids but not in IncHI2 plasmid. This study revealed possible transmission links between colistin resistant S. 4,[5],12:i:- isolates found in Thailand and Denmark and confirmed the important role of plasmids in transferring multidrug resistance. Rapid sea-level rise between the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the mid-Holocene transformed the Southeast Asian coastal landscape, but the impact on human demography remains unclear. Here, we create a paleogeographic map, focusing on sea-level changes during the period spanning the LGM to the present-day and infer the human population history in Southeast and South Asia using 763 high-coverage whole-genome sequencing datasets from 59 ethnic groups. We show that sea-level rise, in particular meltwater pulses 1 A (MWP1A, ~14,500–14,000 years ago) and 1B (MWP1B, ~11,500–11,000 years ago), reduced land area by over 50% since the LGM, resulting in segregation of local human populations. Following periods of rapid sea-level rises, population pressure drove the migration of Malaysian Negritos into South Asia. Integrated paleogeographic and population genomic analysis demonstrates the earliest documented instance of forced human migration driven by sea-level rise. Population genomic analyses and palaeogeographical modelling combine to help infer the ancient migration of humans into South Asia from Sundaland, driven by rapid sea level rises. Background: The burden of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is very high in south Asia (SA) and southeast Asia (SEA). Thus, there is a need to understand the prevalence and risk factors for developing prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) postpartum, in this high-risk population. Aim: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of prediabetes and T2DM among the women with history of GDM in SA and SEA. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed in the following databases: Medline, EMBASE, Web of Knowledge and CINHAL till December 2021. Studies that had reported greater than six weeks of postpartum follow-up were included. The pooled prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes were estimated by random effects meta-analysis model and I2 statistic was used to assess heterogeneity. Results: Meta-analysis of 13 studies revealed that the prevalence of prediabetes and T2DM in post-GDM women were 25.9% (95%CI 18.94 to 33.51) and 29.9% (95%CI 17.02 to 44.57) respectively. Women with history of GDM from SA and SEA seem to have higher risk of developing T2DM than women without GDM (RR 13.2, 95%CI 9.52 to 18.29, p<0.001). The subgroup analysis showed a rise in the prevalence of T2DM with increasing duration of follow-up. Conclusion: The conversion to T2DM and prediabetes is very high among women with history of GDM in SA and SEA. This highlights the need for follow-up of GDM women for early identification of dysglycemia and to plan interventions to prevent/delay the progression to T2DM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines how British imperial historians of the early twentieth century, the zenith of the colonial era, approached the writing of British colonial women into their histories. In the early nineteenth century, hundreds of British women went out to the British colonies in Southeast Asia, yet to date, their stories and experiences have largely been neglected by historians. In general, the nature of the imperial project, with its emphasis on masculinist values of conquest, territorial expansionism and despotic administration, left little scope for the inclusion of women's experiences and contributions in its histories. This article focuses closely on how British historians of the period of high imperialism approached writing about two prominent women, the wives of an imperialist hero, Stamford Raffles. It shows how conventional assumptions about women were entangled with prevailing gendered ideologies, such as the madonna/whore stereotypes, which in turn were enmeshed with notions concerning Orientalism, class and race. The result was a deeply ambivalent portrayal of these colonial women, which awkwardly brought together divergent elements of sexual scandal, wifely devotion, literary achievement, delicate health, career promotion, emotional care taking and judgments about beauty. Introduction: Penicillium marneffei is one of the most common opportunistic infectious fungi associated with AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). It is prevalent in Southeast Asia and southern China (such as Guangdong), but rare in inland provinces of China. Penicillium marneffei infections are often misdiagnosed. Case Report: Here, we report a patient with Penicillium marneffei infection from Shaanxi Province, China, who was previously repeatedly diagnosed as Kala-azar in two hospitals. The patient received medical treatment due to fever and multiple papules, worked as a tour guide, and had travel history in Southeast Asian countries. We performed nanopore genome sequencing on blood samples of the patient and obtained 84,000 reads in 3.5 hours. The average length of the sequences was 7088.7 bases and the longest sequence was 87471 bases. Through comparison with the pathogenic bacteria database, 13 homologous Penicillium marneffei sequences were identified. Furthermore, by using specific quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction of Penicillium marneffei, fungal ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) sequencing, and fungal biphasic culture, we further confirmed the pathogen as Penicillium marneffei. Meanwhile, the patient was confirmed to be HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) positive. Thus, the patient was diagnosed with AIDS combined with Penicillium marneffei infection, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first report of Penicillium marneffei infection in Shaanxi Province, China. Conclusions: Metagenomic analysis based on nanopore sequencing provides an important reference for the diagnosis of Penicillium marneffei infection in this case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
