The effects of copper (in the range 0·01–0·049%) and tin (in the range 0·01–0·26%) content on the mechanical properties of a 1·5Mn-Mo steel have been investigated. A multiple-regression analysis was used to examine the results, from which it was possible to give equations relating room-temperature mechanical properties to the amounts of copper and tin in the steel. Subzero impact properties were determined; hot-tearing tests were also carried out. It wasfound that the largest effect of copper was on strength properties while that of tin was on subzero impact properties. No correlation could be determined between copper and tin contents and hot-tearing propensity.
