3. Signatures of sub-band excitons in few-layer black phosphorus

Abstract

Recent experimental measurements of light absorption in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) reveal a series of high and sharp peaks, interspersed by pairs of lower and broader features. Here, we propose a theoretical model for these excitonic states in few-layer black phosphorus (BP) within a continuum approach for the in-plane degrees of freedom and a tight-binding approximation that accounts for inter-layer couplings. This yields excitonic transitions between different combinations of the sub-bands created by the coupled BP layers, which leads to a series of high and low oscillator strength excitonic states, consistent with the experimentally observed bright and dark exciton peaks, respectively. The main characteristics of such sub-band exciton states, as well as the possibility to control their energies and oscillator strengths via applied electric and magnetic fields, are discussed, towards a full understanding of the excitonic spectrum of few-layer BP and its tunability., Comment: to appear in Phys. Abstract

We discuss the construction of Maxwellian electrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions and some of its applications. Special emphasis is given to the problem of the retarded potentials and radiation, where substantial differences with respect to the usual three-dimensional case arise. These stem from the general form of the solutions of the wave equation in two dimensions, which we discuss using the Green's function method. Abstract

The influence of spin-orbit interactions on the Kondo effect has been under debate recently. Studies conducted recently on a system composed by an Anderson impurity on a 2DEG with Rashba spin-orbit have been shown that it can enhance or suppress the Kondo temperature ($T_{\rm K}$), depending on the relative energy level position of the impurity with respect to the particle-hole symmetric point. Here we investigate a system composed by a single Anderson impurity side-coupled to a quantum wire with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We derive an effective Hamiltonian in which the Kondo coupling is modified by the SOC. In addition, the Hamiltonian contains two other scattering terms, the so called Dzaloshinskyi-Moriya interaction, know to appear in these systems, and a new one describing processes similar to the Elliott-Yafet scattering mechanisms. By performing a renormalization group analysis on the effective Hamiltonian, we find that the correction on the Kondo coupling due to the SOC favors and enhancement of the Kondo temperature even in the particle-hole symmetric point of the Anderson model, agreeing with the NRG results. Moreover, away from the particle-hole symmetric point, $T_{\rm K}$ always increases with the SOC, accordingly with the previous renormalization group analysis., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We investigate the scattering of a wave packet describing low-energy electrons in graphene by a time-dependent finite step potential barrier. Our results demonstrate that, after Klein tunneling through the barrier, the electron acquires an extra energy which depends on the rate of change the barrier height in time. Abstract

Detecting changes in the phenological responses of herbaceous species as a function of predicted climate change is important for forecasting future scenarios for the functioning of dry tropical forests, especially when predicting an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme droughts. Because of the sensitivity of plants to water availability, our study hypothesizes that if years become drier or wetter, herbaceous plants will synchronously change the onset, duration, and intensity of their vegetative phenophases.We used a historical series of 60 years of precipitation observations for the Caatinga vegetation to define daily average of precipitation for rainy (Twet), median (Tcontrol), and dry (Tdry) years. We simulated past average daily rainfall (Twet, Tcontrol, and Tdry) while growing two herbaceous perennials and two herbaceous annuals. We monitored plant growth and measured the activity (absence or presence) and intensity of vegetative phenophases. We used circular statistical analysis to assess differences between treatments.Our results revealed that leaf production was seasonal but relatively uniform for perennial species and highly seasonal (wet season) for annual species. Simulated dry years induced lower leaf emergence concentrated over a few months in annual species, but this effect was more strongly significant in one of the two perennial species. Both annual and perennial species can experience delayed and less intense leaf abscission during the rainy season in years with below‐average precipitation. In contrast, large voluminous rains in years with above‐average precipitation can accelerate and intensify the process of leaf renewal.If future precipitation reductions occur, the changes in phenological response indicate that the cover of annual and perennial herbaceous species in this study will likely decrease, altering the landscape and functioning of dry tropical forests. Abstract

We present a Raman spectroscopy investigation of the vibrational properties of L-histidine crystals at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of the spectra show discontinuities at 165 K, which we identify with modifications in the bonds associated to both the NH3+ and CO2- motifs indicative of a conformational phase transition that changes the intermolecular bonds. 30. Qualitative and quantitative features of orbits of massive particles and photons moving in Wyman geometry

Abstract

The Wyman's solution depends on two parameters, the mass $M$ and the scalar charge $\sigma$. If one fixes $M$ to a positive value, say $M_0$, and let $\sigma^2$ take values along the real line it describes three different types of spacetimes. For $\sigma^2 >0$ the spacetimes are naked singularities, for $\sigma^2 = 0$ one has the Schwarzschild black hole of mass $M_0$ and finally for $-M_0^2 \leq \sigma^2 < 0$ one has wormhole spacetimes. In the present work, we shall study qualitative and quantitative features of orbits of massive particles and photons moving in the naked singularity and wormhole spacetimes of the Wyman solution. These orbits are the timelike geodesics for massive particles and null geodesics for photons. Combining the four geodesic equations with an additional equation derived from the line element, we obtain an effective potential for the massive particles and a different effective potential for the photons. We investigate all possible types of orbits, for massive particles and photons, by studying the appropriate effective potential. We notice that for certain values of $\sigma^2 >0$, there is an infinity potential wall that prevents both massive particles and photons ever to reach the naked singularity. We notice, also, that for certain values of $-M_0^2 \leq \sigma^2 < 0$, the potential is finite everywhere, which allows massive particles and photons moving from one wormhole asymptotically flat region to the other.
