Prethermalization occurs as an important phase in the dynamics of many-body systems when strong coupling drives a quasi-equilibrium in a subspace separated from the thermodynamic equilibrium by the restriction of a gap in energy or other conserved quantity. Here, we report the signature of an enduring prethermal regime of arrested relaxation in the molecular ultracold plasma that forms following the avalanche of a state-selected Rydberg gas of nitric oxide. Electron collisions mix orbital angular momentum, scattering Rydberg molecules to states of very high-$\ell$. Spontaneous predissociation purifies this non-penetrating character, creating an extraordinary gap between the plasma states of $n \approx \ell$, with measured $n>200$ and penetrating states of $\ell = 0, ~1$ and 2. Evolution to a statistically equilibrated state of N and O atoms cannot occur without Rydberg electron penetration, and this gap blocks relaxation for a millisecond or more. Evolving through the critical phase, electrons that balance the NO$^+$ charge behave as though localized in the prethermal phase and play an ineffective role in bridging this gap. However, the application of a weak radiofrequency (RF) field promotes a dramatic degree of relaxation owing to electron collisions. On an entirely different scale, exciting a quantum-state transition in an exceedingly small fraction of the molecules in the prethermalized ensemble acts with even greater effect to drive the entire system toward equilibrium. We ascribe this to dissipative character added to a small fraction of the states in the prethermally localized ensemble. Using the Lindblad master equation, we illustrate qualitatively similar dynamics for a toy model of an open quantum system that consists of a localized set of spins on which dissipation acts locally at a single site.

We introduce phonon state tomography (PST) as a diagnostic probe of electron dynamics in solids whose phonons are optically excited by a laser pulse at initial time. Using a projected-purified matrix-product states algorithm, PST decomposes the exact correlated electron-phonon wavefunction into contributions from purely electronic states corresponding to statistically typical configurations of the optically accessible phononic response, enabling a 'tomographic' reconstruction of the electronic dynamics generated by the phonons. Thus, PST may be used to diagnose electronic behavior in experiments that access only the phonon response, such as thermal diffuse x-ray and electron scattering. We study the dynamics of a metal whose infrared phonons are excited by an optical pulse at initial time and use it to simulate the sample-averaged momentum-resolved phonon occupancy and accurately reconstruct the electronic correlations. We study the effect of a terahertz field-driven single cavity mode for ultrafast control of a fermion chain with dissipation-induced nonlinearity and quadratic coupling to an infrared-active phonon mode. Without photon loss from the cavity, we uncover a first-order phase transition in the nonequilibrium steady state only for the lower phonon-polariton, accompanied by polaritons whose frequency response is asymmetric with respect to the photon frequency due to the direct laser-induced dressing effect on the photon. A weak laser field fails to induce the phase transition but renders the polaritons symmetrical. Finally, we show that sufficiently strong photon loss from the cavity eliminates the polaritons and the associated phase transition. The experimental feasibility of these phenomena is also proposed.

Feasibility of accurate quantum calculations is often restricted by the dimensionality of the truncated Hilbert space required for the numerical computations. The present work demonstrates Bayesian machine learning (ML) models that use quantum properties in an effectively lower-dimensional Hilbert space to make predictions for the Hamiltonian parameters that require a larger basis set as applied to a classical problem in quantum statistical mechanics, the polaron problem. We consider two polaron models: the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the mixed SSH-Holstein model. We demonstrate ML models that can extrapolate polaron properties in the phonon frequency. We consider the sharp transition in the ground-state momentum of the SSH polaron and examine the evolution of this transition from the anti-adiabatic regime to the adiabatic regime. We also demonstrate Bayesian models that use the posterior distributions of highly approximate quantum calculations as the prior distribution for models of more accurate quantum results. This drastically reduces the number of fully converged quantum calculations required to map out the polaron dispersion relations for the full range of Hamiltonian parameters of interest.

Light-mass bipolarons in off-diagonally coupled electron-phonon systems provide a potential route to bipolaronic high-Tc superconductivity. While there has been numerical progress in the physically relevant limit of slow phonons, more insights are needed to fully understand to what extent this mechanism survives at finite densities and in different regimes. We address these questions using advanced tensor-network methods applied to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Studying both the spectral properties of isolated bipolarons as well as the pairing correlations at small finite densities, we find evidence that the conventional picture of bipolarons as molecular bound states which undergo Bose-Einstein condensation may need to be reconsidered. Instead, our findings suggest correlation-driven formation of a fragmented condensate with spatially separated polaron pairs, stabilized by strong repulsive electron-electron interactions at moderate values of the electron-phonon coupling. These spatially modulated charge clouds exhibit pairing with a typical length-scale set by the Fermi momentum.

We analyze the transition temperature $T_c$ of bipolaronic superconductivity in a bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (bond-SSH) model -- also known as a bond Peierls model -- where the electron hoppings are modulated by bond phonons. Using a semiclassical instanton approximation justifiable in the adiabatic limit of slow phonons, we find that the bipolaron mass is only weakly enhanced, in contrast to the typical large mass enhancement found in standard (Holstein) electron-phonon models. Specifically, in the strong coupling limit, the bipolarons can freely slide within a degenerate manifold rather than become self-trapped. A gas of these bipolarons can undergo a superfluid transition at a critical temperature for which we obtain an upper bound. We find that this bound is exponentially larger than that in the Holstein model. Our study provides an analytical understanding of the mechanism behind the high-$T_c$ bipolaronic superconductivity numerically observed in [Phys. Rev. We examine key aspects of the theory of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, focusing on the temperature dependence of the chemical potential, $\mu$. We identify an accurate method of determining the change of $\mu$ in the cuprate high temperature superconductors from angle-resolved-photoemission data (along the "nodal" direction), and show that $\mu$ varies by less than a few percent of the Fermi energy over a range of temperatures from far below to several times above the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$. This shows, unambiguously, that not only are these materials always on the BCS side of the crossover (which is a phase transition in the $d-wave case), but are nowhere near the point of the crossover (where the chemical potential approaches the band bottom)., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We present an efficient implementation of the Generalized Green's function Cluster Expansion (GGCE), which is a new method for computing the ground-state properties and dynamics of polarons (single electrons coupled to lattice vibrations) in model electron-phonon systems. The GGCE works at arbitrary temperature and is well suited for a variety of electron-phonon couplings, including, but not limited to, site and bond Holstein and Peierls (Su-Schrieffer-Heeger) couplings, and couplings to multiple phonon modes with different energy scales and coupling strengths. We study a model of a hole-doped collinear Ising antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice as a route toward the realization of subsystem symmetry. We find nearly exact conservation of dipole symmetry verified both numerically with exact diagonalization (ED) on finite clusters and analytically with perturbation theory. The emergent symmetry forbids the motion of single holes -- or fractons -- but allows hole pairs -- or dipoles -- to move freely along a one-dimensional line, the antiferromagnetic direction, of the system; in the transverse direction, both fractons and dipoles are completely localized. This presents a realization of a `unidirectional' subsystem symmetry. By studying interactions between dipoles, we argue that the subsystem symmetry is likely to continue to persist up to finite (but probably small) hole concentrations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We introduce coupled-cluster (CC) theory for the numerical study of the normal state of two-component, dilute Fermi gases with attractive, short-range interactions at zero temperature. We focus on CC theory with double excitations (CCD) and discuss its close relationship with -- and improvement upon -- the t-matrix approximation, i.e., the resummation of ladder diagrams via a random-phase approximation. We further discuss its relationship with Chevy's variational wavefunction ansatz for the Fermi polaron and argue that CCD is its natural extension to nonzero minority species concentrations. Studying normal state energetics for a range of interaction strengths below and above unitarity, we find that CCD yields good agreement with fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo. We find that CCD does not converge for small polarizations and large interaction strengths, which we speculatively attribute to the nascent instability to a superfluid state., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Potassium-doped terphenyl has recently attracted attention as a potential host for high-transition-temperature superconductivity. Here, we elucidate the many-body electronic structure of recently synthesized potassium-doped terphenyl crystals. We show that this system may be understood as a set of weakly coupled one-dimensional ladders. Depending on the strength of the inter-ladder coupling the system may exhibit spin-gapped valence-bond solid or antiferromagnetic phases, both of which upon hole doping may give rise to superconductivity. We study polarons in the one-dimensional Bond-Peierls electron-phonon model, in which phonons on bonds of a lattice modulate the hopping of electrons between lattice sites, and contrast the results to those known for the Breathing-Mode Peierls problem. By inspecting the atomic limit, we show that polaronic dressing and mass enhancement of Bond-Peierls polarons depend on the momentum dependence of the phonons. For dispersionless phonons, Bond-Peierls polarons are perfectly localized in the atomic limit, unlike their Breathing-mode counterparts, because the carrier creates a string of phonon excitations that can only be annihilated via processes that retrace the carrier to its original site. However, inclusion of phonon dispersion leads to a non-divergent polaron mass even in the atomic limit and depending on the form of the phonon dispersion may lead to a transition to a non-zero-momentum ground state akin to that found in the Breathing-mode Peierls model., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We generalize the family of approximate momentum average methods to formulate a numerically exact, convergent hierarchy of equations whose solution provides an efficient algorithm to compute the Green's function of a particle dressed by bosons suitable in the entire parameter regime. We use this approach to extract ground-state properties and spectral functions. Our approximation-free framework, dubbed the generalized Green's function cluster expansion (GGCE), allows access to exact numerical results in the extreme adiabatic limit, where many standard methods struggle or completely fail. We showcase the performance of the method, specializing three important models of charge-boson coupling in solids and molecular complexes: the molecular Holstein model, which describes coupling between charge density and local distortions, the Peierls model, which describes modulation of charge hopping due to intersite distortions, and a more complex Holstein+Peierls system with couplings to two different phonon modes, paradigmatic of charge-lattice interactions in organic crystals. The GGCE serves as an efficient approach that can be systematically extended to different physical scenarios, thus providing a tool to model the frequency dependence of dressed particles in realistic settings., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures main text + 1 figure appendices

Recent theoretical research on tensor gauge theories led to the discovery of an exotic type of quasiparticles, dubbed fractons, that obey both charge and dipole conservation. Here we describe physical implementation of dipole conservation laws in realistic systems. We show that fractons find a natural realization in hole-doped antiferromagnets. There, individual holes are largely immobile, while dipolar hole pairs move with ease. First, we demonstrate a broad parametric regime of fracton behavior in hole-doped two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets viable through five orders in perturbation theory. We then specialize to the case of holes confined to one dimension in an otherwise two-dimensional antiferromagnetic background, which can be realized via the application of external fields in experiments, and prove ideal fracton behavior. We explicitly map the model onto a fracton Hamiltonian featuring conservation of dipole moment. Manifestations of fractonicity in these systems include gravitational clustering of holes. The non-equilibrium dynamics of matter excited by light may produce electronic phases that do not exist in equilibrium, such as laser-induced high-transition-temperature superconductivity. Here we simulate the dynamics of a metal driven at initial time $t=0$ by a spatially uniform pump that excites dipole-active vibrational modes which couple quadratically to electrons. We study in detail the evolution of electronic and vibrational observables and their coherences. We provide evidence for enhancement of local electronic correlations, including double occupancy, accompanied by rapid loss of spatial structure, which we interpret as a signature of emergent effective disorder in the dynamics. This effective disorder, which arises in absence of quenched randomness, dominates the electronic dynamics as the system evolves towards a correlated electron-phonon long-time state, possibly explaining why transient superconductivity is not observed. The pumped electron-phonon systems studied here, which are governed by non-linear coupling, exhibit a much more substantial dynamical response than linearly coupled models relevant in equilibrium, thus presenting a pathway to new modalities for out-of-equilibrium phases. Our results provide a basis within which to understand correlation dynamics in current pump-probe experiments of vibrationally coupled electrons, highlight the importance of the evolution of phase coherence, and demonstrate that pumped electron-phonon systems provide a means of approximately realizing recently proposed scenarios of dynamically induced disorder in translation-invariant systems., Comment: 9 pages main text + 11 pages supplementary materials, 5 figures main text + 6 figures supplementary materials

We use the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method to study a one-dimensional chain with Peierls electron-phonon coupling, which describes the modulation of the electron hopping by lattice distortions. We demonstrate that this system is stable against phase separation in the dilute density limit. We only find phase separation numerically for large couplings for which the linear approximation for the electron-phonon coupling becomes invalid; this behavior can be stabilized in a narrow sliver of the physical parameter space if the dispersion of the phonons is carefully tuned. These results indicate that in the dilute electron density limit, Peierls bipolaron liquids are generically stable, unlike in other models of electron-phonon coupling. We show that this behavior extends to finite carrier concentrations of up to quarter filling. We consider the quench of an atomic impurity via a single Rydberg excitation in a degenerate Fermi gas. The Rydberg interaction with the background gas particles induces an ultralong-range potential that binds particles to form dimers, trimers, tetramers, etc. Such oligomeric molecules were recently observed in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In this work, we demonstrate with a functional determinant approach that quantum statistics and fluctuations have observable spectral consequences. We show that the occupation of molecular states is predicated on the Fermi statistics, which suppresses molecular formation in an emergent molecular shell structure. Fractons are a type of emergent quasiparticle which cannot move freely in isolation, but can easily move in bound pairs. Similar phenomenology is found in boson-affected hopping models, encountered in the study of polaron systems and hole-doped Ising antiferromagnets, in which motion of a particle requires the creation or absorption of bosonic excitations. We show that boson-affected hopping models can provide a natural realization of fractons, either approximately or exactly, depending on the details of the system. We first consider a generic one-dimensional boson-affected hopping model, in which we show that single particles move only at sixth order in perturbation theory, while motion of bound states occurs at second order, allowing for a broad parameter regime exhibiting approximate fracton phenomenology. We explicitly map the model onto a fracton Hamiltonian featuring conservation of dipole moment via integrating out the mediating bosons. We then consider a special type of boson-affected hopping models with mutual hard-core repulsion between particles and bosons, accessible in hole-doped mixed-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets, in which the hole motion is one dimensional in an otherwise two-dimensional antiferromagnetic background. We show that this system, which is within the current reach of ultracold-atom experiments, exhibits perfect fracton behavior to all orders in perturbation theory, thereby enabling the experimental study of dipole-conserving field theories. We further discuss diagnostic signatures of fractonic behavior in these systems. The exploration of large-scale many-body phenomena in quantum materials has produced many important experimental discoveries, including novel states of entanglement, topology and quantum order as found for example in quantum spin ices, topological insulators and semimetals, complex magnets, and high-$T_c$ superconductors. Yet, the sheer scale of solid-state systems and the difficulty of exercising exacting control of their quantum mechanical degrees of freedom limit the pace of rational progress in advancing the properties of these and other materials. With extraordinary effort to counteract natural processes of dissipation, precisely engineered ultracold quantum simulators could point the way to exotic new materials. Here, we look instead to the quantum mechanical character of the arrested state formed by a quenched ultracold molecular plasma. This novel class of system arises spontaneously, without a deliberate engineering of interactions, and evolves naturally from state-specified initial conditions, to a long-lived final state of canonical density, in a process that conflicts with classical notions of plasma dissipation and neutral dissociation. We take information from experimental observations to develop a conceptual argument that attempts to explain this state of arrested relaxation in terms of a minimal phenomenological model of randomly interacting dipoles of random energies. This model of the plasma forms a starting point to describe its observed absence of relaxation in terms of many-body localization (MBL). The large number of accessible Rydberg and excitonic states gives rise to an unconventional web of many-body interactions that vastly exceeds the complexity of MBL in a conventional few-level scheme. We investigate the formation of trimers in an infinite one-dimensional lattice model of hard-core particles with single-particle hopping $t$ and and nearest-neighbour two-body $U$ and three-body $V$ interactions of relevance to Rydberg atoms and polar molecules. For sufficiently attractive $U\leq-2t$ and positive $V>0$ a large trimer is stabilized, which persists as $V\rightarrow \infty$, while both attractive $U\leq0$ and $V\leq0$ bind a small trimer. The excited state above this small trimer is also bound and has a large extent; its behavior as $V\rightarrow -\infty$ resembles that of the large ground-state trimer. These large bound states appear to admit a continuum description. Furthermore, we find that in the limit $V>>t$, $U<-2t$ the bound-state behavior qualitatively evolves with larger $|U|$ from a state described by the scattering of three far separated particles to a state of a compact dimer scattering with a single particle., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

It is widely accepted that phonon-mediated high-temperature superconductivity is impossible at ambient pressure, because of the very large effective masses of polarons/bipolarons at strong electron-phonon coupling. Here we challenge this belief by showing that strongly bound yet very light bipolarons appear for strong Peierls/Su-Schrieffer-Heeger interaction. These bipolarons also exhibit many other unconventional properties, e.g. at strong coupling there are two low-energy bipolaron bands that are stable against strong on-site Hubbard repulsion. Using numerical simulations and analytical arguments, we show that these properties result from the specific form of the phonon-mediated interaction, which is of "pair-hopping" instead of regular density-density type. This unusual effective interaction is bound to have non-trivial consequences for the superconducting state expected to arise at finite carrier concentrations, and should favor a large critical temperature., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We present a machine-learning method for predicting sharp transitions in a Hamiltonian phase diagram by extrapolating the properties of quantum systems. The method is based on Gaussian Process regression with a combination of kernels chosen through an iterative procedure maximizing the predicting power of the kernels. The method is capable of extrapolating across the transition lines. The calculations within a given phase can be used to predict not only the closest sharp transition, but also a transition removed from the available data by a separate phase. We argue that the quenched ultracold plasma presents an experimental platform for studying quantum many-body physics of disordered systems in the long-time and finite energy-density limits. We consider an experiment that quenches a plasma of nitric oxide to an ultracold system of Rydberg molecules, ions and electrons that exhibits a long-lived state of arrested relaxation. The qualitative features of this state fail to conform with classical models. Here, we develop a microscopic quantum description for the arrested phase based on an effective many-body spin Hamiltonian that includes both dipole-dipole and van der Waals interactions. When dressed particles (polarons) exchange quantum phonons, the resulting interactions are generally attractive. If the particles have hard-core statistics and the coupling to phonons is through the kinetic energy terms, phonon-mediated interactions are repulsive. Here, we show that such repulsive phonon-mediated interactions bind dressed particles into bipolarons with unique properties. These bipolaron states appear in the gap between phonon excitations, above the two-polaron continuum. While thermodynamically unstable, the bipolaron is protected by energy and momentum conservation and represents a novel quasiparticle with a large dispersion and a negative effective mass near zero momentum.
