Topological photonics offers the opportunity to control light propagation in a way that is robust from fabrication disorders and imperfections. However, experimental demonstrations have remained on the order of the vacuum wavelength. Theoretical proposals have shown topological edge states that can propagate robustly while embracing deep subwavelength confinement that defies diffraction limits. Here we show the experimental proof of these deep subwavelength topological edge states by implementing periodic modulation of hyperbolic phonon polaritons within a van der Waals heterostructure composed of isotopically pure hexagonal boron nitride flakes on patterned gold films. The topological edge state is confined in a subdiffraction volume of 0.021 µm 3 , which is four orders of magnitude smaller than the free-space excitation wavelength volume used to probe the system, while maintaining the resonance quality factor above 100. This finding can be directly extended to and hybridized with other van der Waals materials to broadened operational frequency ranges, streamline integration of diverse polaritonic materials, and compatibility with electronic and excitonic systems., (© 2024. This study delved at how the natural substance dieckol (DCL) prevents prostate cancerous cells from proliferating and migrating by blocking the JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway in PC-3 cells. For numerous tests, the cells were treated to DCL at a range of concentrations (0-20 μM) for 24 h. DCL mediated cytotoxicity was analyzed by MTT assay. To evaluate ROS, DCFH-DA staining was employed. Dual (AO/EtBr) staining was utilized to examine apoptotic changes, and MMP levels in PC-3 cells were examined using the appropriate fluorescent staining assays. By using flow cytometry and western blotting, the protein expressions of cell survival, cell cycle, proliferation, and apoptosis were assessed. The results showed that DCL significantly cytotoxically affects PC-3, and the IC 50 was discovered to be 12 μM for 24 h exposure. Furthermore, after DCL treatment in PC-3, considerable ROS generation and increased apoptotic signals were detected. STAT3, JAK1, PCNA, and cyclins D1 and E1 are all suppressed by DCL in PC-3. In addition, DCL therapy in PC-3 dramatically increased pro-apoptotic proteins such Bax, caspase-3, and cytochrome C. Therefore, DCL has been regarded as a chemotherapeutic agent because to its ability to decrease the expression of proteins that control cell proliferation, including STAT3, JAK1, PCNA, and cyclins D1 and E1., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Many promising optoelectronic devices, such as broadband photodetectors, nonlinear frequency converters, and building blocks for data communication systems, exploit photoexcited charge carriers in graphene. For these systems, it is essential to understand the relaxation dynamics after photoexcitation. These dynamics contain a sub-100 fs thermalization phase, which occurs through carrier-carrier scattering and leads to a carrier distribution with an elevated temperature. This is followed by a picosecond cooling phase, where different phonon systems play a role: graphene acoustic and optical phonons, and substrate phonons. Here, we address the cooling pathway of two technologically relevant systems, both consisting of high-quality graphene with a mobility >10 000 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and environments that do not efficiently take up electronic heat from graphene: WSe 2 -encapsulated graphene and suspended graphene. We study the cooling dynamics using ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy at room temperature. Cooling via disorder-assisted acoustic phonon scattering and out-of-plane heat transfer to substrate phonons is relatively inefficient in these systems, suggesting a cooling time of tens of picoseconds. However, we observe much faster cooling, on a time scale of a few picoseconds. We attribute this to an intrinsic cooling mechanism, where carriers in the high-energy tail of the hot-carrier distribution emit optical phonons. This creates a permanent heat sink, as carriers efficiently rethermalize. We develop a macroscopic model that explains the observed dynamics, where cooling is eventually limited by optical-to-acoustic phonon coupling. These fundamental insights will guide the development of graphene-based optoelectronic devices.

Graphene is conceivably the most nonlinear optoelectronic material we know. Its nonlinear optical coefficients in the terahertz frequency range surpass those of other materials by many orders of magnitude. Here, we show that the terahertz nonlinearity of graphene, both for ultrashort single-cycle and quasi-monochromatic multicycle input terahertz signals, can be efficiently controlled using electrical gating, with gating voltages as low as a few volts. For example, optimal electrical gating enhances the power conversion efficiency in terahertz third-harmonic generation in graphene by about two orders of magnitude. Our experimental results are in quantitative agreement with a physical model of the graphene nonlinearity, describing the time-dependent thermodynamic balance maintained within the electronic population of graphene during interaction with ultrafast electric fields. Combining the quantum optical properties of single-photon emitters with the strong near-field interactions available in nanophotonic and plasmonic systems is a powerful way of creating quantum manipulation and metrological functionalities. The ability to actively and dynamically modulate emitter-environment interactions is of particular interest in this regard. While thermal, mechanical and optical modulation have been demonstrated, electrical modulation has remained an outstanding challenge. Here we realize fast, all-electrical modulation of the near-field interactions between a nanolayer of erbium emitters and graphene, by in-situ tuning the Fermi energy of graphene. We demonstrate strong interactions with a  >1000-fold increased decay rate for  ~25% of the emitters, and electrically modulate these interactions with frequencies up to 300 kHz - orders of magnitude faster than the emitter's radiative decay (~100 Hz). This constitutes an enabling platform for integrated quantum technologies, opening routes to quantum entanglement generation by collective plasmon emission or photon emission with controlled waveform.

Due to its outstanding electrical properties and chemical stability, graphene finds widespread use in various electrochemical applications. Although the presence of electrolytes strongly affects its electrical conductivity, the underlying mechanism has remained elusive. Here, we employ terahertz spectroscopy as a contact-free means to investigate the impact of ubiquitous cations (Li + , Na + , K + , and Ca 2+ ) in aqueous solution on the electronic properties of SiO 2 -supported graphene. We find that, without applying any external potential, cations can shift the Fermi energy of initially hole-doped graphene by ∼200 meV up to the Dirac point, thus counteracting the initial substrate-induced hole doping. Remarkably, the cation concentration and cation hydration complex size determine the kinetics and magnitude of this shift in the Fermi level. Combined with theoretical calculations, we show that the ion-induced Fermi level shift of graphene involves cationic permeation through graphene. The interfacial cations located between graphene and SiO 2 electrostatically counteract the substrate-induced hole doping effect in graphene. These insights are crucial for graphene device processing and further developing graphene as an ion-sensing material.

Cancer can be considered the result of a series of genetic variations that lead to a normal cell being transformed into a malignant one while avoiding cell death-atypical characteristics of tumor development. Although a large number of genomics and epigenetic alterations have been identified in cells undergoing apoptotic, autophagic or necrotic cell death, the treatment of cancer remains thought-provoking. Pyroptosis is differentiated from other types of programmed cell death and is mainly activated by Caspase-1. To initiate pyroptosis, cells receive specific "death" messages, produce cytokines, swell, burst, and ultimately die. The deficiency of Caspase-1 expression may lead to inflammation-mediated tumor progression. Hence, the molecular mechanisms for the Caspase-1 activation in tumor tissues are yet to be exploited extensively. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization of arecanut husk and its potential application as an alternate solid fuel and heavy metal sorption (adsorbent) was attempted. Arecanut husk (AH) treated with citric acid for 9 h resulted in the hydrochar yield of 58.7% with increased fixed carbon from 17 to 39.7% and HHV from 16.98 to 21.14 MJ kg -1 compared to the parent biomass. The arecanut husk hydrochar (AHH) had H/C of 1.27, O/C ratio of 0.59 with an energy yield of 72.81%, and energy densification ratio of 1.24, and the values have the similar fuel characteristics of lignite. The pH, zeta potential, and surface of the hydrochar were 5.56, - 22.60 mV, and 0.98 m 2  g -1 respectively. Hydrochar with a dosage of 0.1% showed a maximum rate of adsorption for Pb 2+ (79.86 mg g -1 ) at the initial concentration of 100 mg L -1 in the aqueous solution compared to Zn 2+ , Cr 6+ , and Ni 2+ . SEM with EDAX and FT-IR spectroscopy results confirmed the presence of Pb 2+ and changes in functional groups in arecanut husk hydrochar after adsorption of heavy metals in the aqueous solution.

Hydroxyapatite (Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 , HAP), a multimineral substituted calcium phosphate is one of the most substantial bone mineral component that has been widely used as bone replacement materials because of its bioactive and biocompatible properties. However, the use of HAP as bone implants is restricted due to its brittle nature and poor mechanical properties. To overcome this defect and to generate suitable bone implant material, HAP is combined with biodegradable polymer (polycaprolactone, PCL). To enhance the mechanical property of the composite, carbon nanofibers (CNF) is incorporated to the composite, which has long been considered for hard and soft tissue implant due to its exceptional mechanical and structural properties. It is well-known that nanofibrous scaffold are the most-prominent material for the bone reconstruction. We have developed a new remarkable CNF/PCL/mineralized hydroxyapatite (M-HAP) nanofibrous scaffolds on titanium (Ti). The as-developed coatings were characterized by various techniques. The results indicate the formation and homogeneous distribution of components in the nanofibrous scaffolds. Incorporation of CNF into the PCL/M-HAP composite significantly improves the adhesion strength and elastic modulus of the scaffolds. Furthermore, the responses of human osteosarcoma (HOS MG63) cells cultured onto the scaffolds demonstrate that the viability of cells were considerably high for CNF-incorporated PCL/M-HAP than for PCL/M-HAP. In vivo analysis show the presence of soft fibrous tissue growth without any significant inflammatory signs, which suggests that incorporated CNF did not counteract the favorable biological roles of HAP. For load-bearing applications, research in various bone models is needed to substantiate the clinical availability. Thus, from the obtained results, we suggest that CNF/PCL/M-HAP nanofibrous scaffolds can be considered as potential candidates for orthopedic applications.

Noninvasive continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring is not yet practically available for daily use. Challenges include making the system easily wearable, reducing noise level and improving accuracy. Variations in each person's physical characteristics, as well as the possibility of different postures, increase the complexity of continuous BP monitoring, especially outside the hospital. This study attempts to provide an easily wearable solution and proposes training to specific posture and individual for further improving accuracy. The wrist watch-based system we developed can measure electrocardiogram and photoplethysmogram. From these two signals, we measure pulse transit time through which we can obtain systolic and diastolic blood pressure through regression techniques. In this study, we investigate various functions to perform the training to obtain blood pressure. We validate measurements on different postures and subjects, and show the value of training the device to each posture and each subject. We observed that the average RMSE between the measured actual systolic BP and calculated systolic BP is between 7.83 to 9.37 mmHg across 11 subjects. The corresponding range of error for diastolic BP is 5.77 to 6.90 mmHg. The system can also automatically detect the arm position of the user using an accelerometer with an average accuracy of 98%, to make sure that the sensor is kept at the proper height. This system, called BioWatch, can potentially be a unified solution for heart rate, SPO2 and continuous BP monitoring.

A wrist watch based system, which can measure electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG), is presented in this work. By using both ECG and PPG we also measure pulse transit time (PTT), which studies show to correlate well with blood pressure (BP). The system is also capable of monitoring heart rate using either ECG or PPG and can monitor blood oxygenation by easily replacing the PPG sensors with a different set. In this work, we investigate methods to train a fitting function to convert a PTT measurement to its corresponding systolic BP. We also validate measurements on different postures and show the value of calibrating the device for each posture. This system, called BioWatch, can potentially facilitate continuous and ubiquitous monitoring of ECG, PPG, heart rate, blood oxygenation and BP.
