A key ecological parameter for planktonic copepods studies is their interspecies encounter rate which is driven by their behaviour and is strongly influenced by turbulence of the surrounding environment. A distinctive feature of copepods motility is their ability to perform quick displacements, often dubbed jumps, by means of powerful swimming strokes. Such a reaction has been associated to an escape behaviour from flow disturbances due to predators or other external dangers. In the present study, the encounter rate of copepods in a developed turbulent flow with intensity comparable to the one found in copepods' habitat is numerically investigated. This is done by means of a Lagrangian copepod (LC) model that mimics the jump escape reaction behaviour from localised high-shear rate fluctuations in the turbulent flows. Our analysis shows that the encounter rate for copepods of typical perception radius of ~ {\eta}, where {\eta} is the dissipative scale of turbulence, can be increased by a factor up to ~ 100 compared to the one experienced by passively transported fluid tracers. Furthermore, we address the effect of introducing in the LC model a minimal waiting time between consecutive jumps. It is shown that any encounter-rate enhancement is lost if such time goes beyond the dissipative time-scale of turbulence, {\tau}_{\eta}. Because typically in the ocean {\eta} ~ 0.001m and {\tau}_{\eta} ~ 1s, this provides stringent constraints on the turbulent-driven enhancement of encounter-rate due to a purely mechanical induced escape reaction., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Global pollution by plastics derived from petroleum has fostered the development of carbon–neutral, biodegradable bioplastics synthesized from renewable resources such as modern biomass, yet knowledge on the impact of bioplastics on ecosystems is limited. Here we review the polylactic acid plastic with focus on synthesis, biodegradability tuning, environmental conversion to microplastics, and impact on microbes, algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton, annelids, mollusk and fish. Polylactic acid is a low weight semi-crystalline bioplastic used in agriculture, medicine, packaging and textile. Polylactic acid is one of the most widely used biopolymers, accounting for 33% of all bioplastics produced in 2021. Although biodegradable in vivo, polylactic acid is not completely degradable under natural environmental conditions, notably under aquatic conditions. Polylactic acid disintegrates into microplastics faster than petroleum-based plastics and may pose severe threats to the exposed biota.

- Abstract
Green and Sustainable activated carbons were obtained by one-step alkaline chemical activation process using a food industry lignocellulosic waste (pomegranate peels) as precursor. A non-harmful activating agent (alkali carbonate) was used, a more sustainable alternative to alkali hydroxides. The pomegranate peels-based activated carbons present high carbon content (>94%), low ash content (<0.5%) and significant nitrogen content (>1.0%); this last value is important because they can be highly effective CO2 adsorbents with the aim of improving biogas for renewable energy production. The activated carbons obtained were essentially microporous materials (micropore volume >82%), with BET specific surface area up to 1860 m2/g and total pore volume up to 0.879 cm3/g. These adsorbents were very efficient materials to retain CO2 at high pressure with an adsorption capacity similar or superior to experimental and commercial activated carbons. The CO2 adsorption capacity increased mainly with increasing activation temperature, the highest value being 717 mg/g at 3 MPa and 25 °C. Ultramicropores were very efficient in the CO2 and CH4 adsorption at low pressure while large micropores and small mesopores governed the high-pressure sorption behavior. These materials had negligible H2 adsorption capacity which makes them useful for separating gas mixtures in order to obtain pure H2.

International audience; Phthalic Acid Esters (PAEs) are a group of emerging organic contaminants that have become a serious issue because of their ubiquitous presence and hazardous impact on the marine environment worldwide. Seawater samples were collected monthly from December 2013 to November 2014 in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea (Marseille Bay). The samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as well as the molecular distribution of dissolved PAEs by using solid phase extraction followed by gas chromatography and mass spectrom-etry (GC/MS) analyses. The results demonstrated the occurrence of six PAEs, including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP), din -butyl phthalate (DnBP), benzylbutyl phthalate (BzBP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), with total concentrations ranging from 130 to 1330 ng L −1 (av. 522 ng L −1). In Marseille Bay, the highest concentrations were detected in the bottom water from June to November 2014 and in the whole water column during the winter mixing period. This result suggests that resuspension of PAE-rich sediment, in relation to the accumulation of plastic debris above the seabed, or the higher degradation rate in the upper layer of the water column, plays a significant role in the PAE dynamics in coastal water. DEHP was the most abundant PAE in all of the surface samples and the summer bottom samples, followed by DiBP and DnBP, which also represent the largest fractions in the other bottom samples.

Feeding success is a key factor for larval growth and survival, and is highly dependent on small-scale processes which occur during the predator-prey interaction. We studied the feeding mechanisms involved in the capture success of the European whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) larvae using video recordings. The successful predatory sequence of this species consists of the following 5 events: encounter, pursuit (including fixation), strike, capture and ingestion. C. lavaretus larvae can exhibit an “S” shaped posture and always strikes on its prey from beyond. The mean fixation distance for wild larvae was 1.75 ± 0.71 mm and for reared larvae was 1.65 ± 0.76 mm. This distance was significantly different between failed and successful snaps, and seemed to be an important parameter to the capture success of C. lavaretus larvae. The analysis of the complexity in predator’s swimming path showed that more convoluted approaches are less likely to lead to a fruitful attack.

The distribution of zooplankton communities from the source to the mouth of a lowland water course, the Scheldt, was used to test some concepts on the longitudinal distribution of organisms along both estuarine (Remane’s diversity concept) and riverine reaches (River Continuum Concept (RCC), Riverine Ecosystem Synthesis (RES)). Substantial zooplankton densities were found in both April and June samples all along the water course, and not only in the lower reaches as suggested by the RCC. Based on the zooplankton communities, and using hierarchical classifications and Generalized Linear Model, several successive zones influenced by different physical and chemical variables and trophic conditions could be distinguished along the Scheldt, in agreement with the RES model: the non-tidal riverine, the tidal freshwater, the tidal salinity gradient, and the marine zones. Over the entire freshwater reach, rotifers were numerically dominant during both samplings; crustaceans became more abundant in June than in April, specifically in the downstream reaches. Highest total zooplankton abundance and diversity were found in the tidal freshwater reach, lowest in the brackish water reach, in accordance with Remane’s concept. An influence of the tributaries on zooplankton communities is suggested, directly by import or dilution of zooplankton communities or through changing environmental conditions.

The Bahía Blanca Estuary, located at the Atlantic coast of Argentina, includes a governmental nature reserve to protect biodiversity, lands and water; however, as the process of industrialization and urbanization is stepping rapidly at the neighbouring area, the potential increase in contaminant loads is a serious concern. After several contaminants surveys at the estuary, no single study has been yet performed in order to study the native mussels population vs. the chemical environment; then, to test the ability of Brachidontes rodriguezii assemblages as pollution indicators, native populations were chosen at three different sites from the Bahía Blanca Estuary. After quadrants sampling, the populations were assessed for size classification, density, sex rate, surrounding sediment and body burden of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) as chemical pollution markers. Soxhlet extracted samples were measured through Capillary Gas Chromatography (Hewlett-Packard P68906C)/Mass Spectrometry (HP 5972). Mussels appeared to be better pollution indicators than sediments and could be used to classify the average pollution level at the area as “moderate” along the studied period. A positive correlational analyses was found between the population assemblage disruption vs. PAH’s tissue burden, supporting the suitability of this specie to be used as biomonitor. In addition, source apportionment procedures could successfully discern between PAHs petrogenic and combustion inputs, leading to tag each site with the major contributing PAHs sources. Finally, screening values analysis concluded a certain health risk to potential consumers; thus, highlighting the urgent need of a systematic monitoring program. Fil: Oliva, Ana Laura. Background: Synovial sarcomas most commonly occur in the soft tissues of the extremities of young adults. A primary occurrence in the mediastinum is very rare with only a few reported cases in the world literature. Study aims: to insist on the rarity of this pathology, its imaging features and the importance for recognizing unusual presentation of this aggressive neoplasm to aid appropriate clinical management. Cases: Here in, we report a rare case of primary monophasic spindle cell synovial sarcoma of the mediastinum in a 31-year-old man who had an incidental finding of such a tumor. The imaging studies on admission showed 12 cm anterior- middle mediastinal mass with multiple metastases in the lung, pleura, mediastinal lymph nodes and spine. An ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle biopsy of a cervical extension of the mass permitted histopathology and immuno histochemical analysis which supported the diagnosis of monophasic spindle cell synovial sarcoma. The patient was treated by chemo-therapy without response. Conclusion: A wide range of neoplasms both primary and metastatic occurs in the mediastinum which poses considerable diagnostic difficulties. A synovial sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Imaging can guide percutaneous needle biopsy of the tumor and evaluate its stage. Immunohistochemistry can be very helpful for an accurate diagnosis

- Abstract
Water quality of the Scheldt estuary (Belgium/The Netherlands) has considerably improved in recent years, especially in the upstream, freshwater reaches. Within the zooplankton community, the copepod Eurytemora affinis, typically abundant in brackish water and quasi-absent from freshwater before 2007, has since substantially developed in the latter, where it now represents 90% of the crustacean mesozooplankton community. Simultaneously, cyclopoid copepod abundance has greatly decreased, while cladoceran abundance did not change. The study aim was: 1) to verify if the zooplankton community described for the period 2007–2009 by Mialet et al. (2011) has stabilized until present, and 2) to look for the environmental conditions favouring E. affinis development and causing changes in the upstream freshwater zooplankton community. The 2002–2012 temporal evolution of the zooplankton distribution at three stations in the upstream freshwater Scheldt estuary was analyzed. Water quality remained better after 2007 than before, and some factors revealed continuous improvement in annual mean concentrations (e.g. increase in O2, decrease in BOD5 and NH4-N concentration). The increase in oxygen and the decrease in NH4-N concentration, together with low discharge during summer were the main environmental factors explaining the development and timing of E. affinis in the upstream freshwater reach. In this reach, E. affinis maximal abundance is shifted to higher temperatures (summer) compared to its typical maximum spring abundance peak in the brackish zone of the Scheldt estuary and in most temperate estuaries. The changes in zooplankton community followed a temporal and spatial gradient induced by the spatio-temporal evolution of water quality improvement. The most downstream station (3) allowed E. affinis development (oxygen concentration > 4 mg L-1; NH4-N concentration < 2 mg L-1, d

- Abstract
Planktonic copepods are small crustaceans that have the ability to swim by quick powerful jumps. Such an aptness is used to escape from high shear regions, which may be caused either by flow perturbations, produced by a large predator (i.e., fish larvae), or by the inherent highly turbulent dynamics of the ocean. Through a combined experimental and numerical study, we investigate the impact of jumping behavior on the small-scale patchiness of copepods in a turbulent environment. Recorded velocity tracks of copepods displaying escape response jumps in still water are here used to define and tune a Lagrangian copepod (LC) model. The model is further employed to simulate the behavior of thousands of copepods in a fully developed hydrodynamic turbulent flow obtained by direct numerical simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. First, we show that the LC velocity statistics is in qualitative agreement with available experimental observations of copepods in turbulence. Second, we quantify the clustering of LC, via the fractal dimension D2. We show that D2 can be as low as ∼2.3 and that it critically depends on the shear-rate sensitivity of the proposed LC model, in particular it exhibits a minimum in a narrow range of shear-rate values. We further investigate the effect of jump intensity, jump orientation, and geometrical aspect ratio of the copepods on the small-scale spatial distribution. At last, possible ecological implications of the observed clustering on encounter rates and mating success are discussed.

Oligohaline copepods such as Eurytemora affinis are widespread in estuaries of northwestern Europe. These minute crustaceans are highly sensitive to contamination and thus serve as useful bioindicators for the monitoring of pollutant effects. The use of decreased cholinesterase (ChE) activity as a sublethal biomarker of exposure to neurotoxic compounds supposes that ChE has been defined in copepods. This study reports the partial purification and characterization of ChE extracted from E . affinis. Analysis by non-denaturing PAGE and by isoelectric focusing indicated that the enzyme is probably a single dimeric form of 140 KDa, with a p I of 6.2. This enzyme is likely an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) since it hydrolyzes acetylthiocholine iodide at a higher rate than other substrates, such as butyrylthiocholine and propionylthiocholine, at pH 7.0 and 25 °C, and is inhibited by eserine but not by iso-OMPA. The enzyme exhibited high sensitivity to some of the various pollutants tested. The kinetic properties of this ChE were compared with those of other invertebrate ChEs.
