Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) an important marine species of high economic value and excellent meat quality, has suffered great losses due to disease in high-density aquaculture. The macroalgae, Gracilaria pygmaea, which include various bioactive compounds, may serve as an immunostimulant in the aquaculture industry. This study aimed to assess the effect of dietary fish meal replacement with Gracilaria pygmaea meal on immunity, activity of liver antioxidant enzymes, intestinal tissue, lysozyme gene activity, and IGF-I gene activity in Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer). To this end, 120 individuals of Asian sea bass with an average weight of 28±0.5 g were divided into four treatments and three replicates and kept in 12 tanks (10 fish per 300-liter tank). Blends of soybean meal and fish meal were used as a Control diet (C). Experimental diets were prepared to substitute the fish meal with 3 (GL3), 6 (GL6), and 9% (GL9) of G. pygmaea in the basal diet. Fish were fed three times daily for six weeks. Dietary supplementation of G. pygmaea led to significantly increase in total immunoglobulin level compared to the control. The inclusion of G. pygmaea in the diet did not affect the antioxidant status of the fish. The histological analysis showed that fish of all groups exhibited normal morphology of anterior intestine and pyloric caeca. The obtained results showed that fish of GL9 and the control groups had the highest IGF-1 mRNA transcript abundance in the liver compared to the other groups. The changes of lysozyme expression noticed among the groups were statistically insignificant. Overall, the results obtained in this study indicated that dietary G. pygmaea did not cause adverse effects on immune status, antioxidant status, intestinal morphology, and lysozyme gene activity in Asian sea bass. Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary red seaweed, Gracilaria pygmaea level on growth, antioxidant‐related parameters, digestive enzyme activity and intestinal morphology of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry. Five isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets were formulated to contain four G. pygmaea levels (30 (GL‐30), 60 (GL‐60), 90 (GL‐90) and 120 g/kg (GL‐120)), and a control diet was used, without inclusion of seaweed. Results of the feeding trial indicated that final body (FBW: 2.8–3.5 g) and specific growth rate (SGR: 4.8–5.2) were significantly improved when 60 g/kg G. pygmaea was supplemented in the diets. However, there was a significant reduction (p < .05) of final body weight (FBW) and specific growth rate (SGR) in fish fed 120 g/kg G. pygmaea. Protease activity was significantly lower in fish fed GL‐120 diet when compared to GL‐30 or control (p < .05). Lipase was significantly affected by dietary seaweed regardless its level of supplementation (p < .05). The inclusion of the Gracilaria in the diet led to evident changes in the fish antioxidant status with significant reduction of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase activity and lipid peroxidation products. The histological study demonstrated that all groups of fish displayed normal morphology of anterior intestine and pyloric caeca. Villi absorptive area in the anterior intestine of treatment groups GL‐90 and GL‐120 significantly decreased (p < .05). Overall, the results obtained in this study indicate that dietary G. pygmaea supplementation up to 90 g/kg improves growth performance in rainbow trout fry without compromising antioxidant responses and digestive function. The effects of dietary n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids [eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] with α-tocopherol on growth, non-specific immune response and oxidative status were investigated in Caspian brown trout, Salmo trutta caspius, fry. Six experimental diets containing three different dietary levels of n-3 HUFAs (low: 1 + 0.5% of total fatty acids, DHA+ EPA, medium: 2 + 1%, DHA + EPA, high: 4 + 2%, DHA + EPA) with two different levels of α-tocopherol (low: 300 and high: 1000 mg kg−1 diet) were prepared and named: LL, LH, ML, MH, HL and HH (HUFA/α-tocopherol) groups, respectively. Diets were fed to triplicate groups of 60 fry with an initial weight of 600 ± 25 mg for 10 weeks. Results showed that increase in dietary DHA and EPA up to high level improved fry growth in terms of the body weight and specific growth rate, particularly when dietary α-tocopherol levels were high, suggesting a higher antioxidant protection value when these fatty acids are high. At all dietary n-3 HUFA levels, increase in α-tocopherol from low to high level enhanced the alternative complement (ACH50) activity. Fry fed diets medium and high n-3 HUFA displaying significantly higher lysozyme activity ( P < 0.05). Moreover, fish fed medium or high levels of n-3 HUFA had significantly lower prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) than those fed low n-3 HUFA ( P < 0.05). Significant differences in antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase) activity were also observed between groups, with higher activity in high levels of n-3 HUFA ( P < 0.05). Results of this study suggest that the effect of dietary n-3 HUFA on examined non-specific immunity parameters are not uniform; however, these impacts are closely related to the α-tocopherol supplement and their interaction. Contents The traditional stripping procedure for collecting fish semen is associated with the risk of urine contamination, which may significantly affect semen quality and quantity. The use of a catheter as an alternative method for semen collection may overcome this problem. Therefore, this study compared Caspian brown trout ( Salmo trutta caspius) semen parameters (i.e. sperm density, seminal plasma osmolality, motility parameters of spermatozoa analysed using computer-assisted sperm analysis and fertility) between the traditional stripping method and the use of a catheter. All parameter values of the semen collected with a catheter were significantly higher ( p < .05; density = 7.67 ± 1.02 × 109 ml−1 and osmolality = 279.28 ± 32.84 mOsm kg−1) than those collected with stripping method (density = 4.85 ± 0.47 × 109 ml−1 and osmolality = 216.42 ± 20.75 mOsm kg−1). Semen collected with a catheter was characterized by higher spermatozoa motility compared with sperm collected via stripping. Similarly, the fertilization ability of sperm collected with a catheter was significantly greater ( p < .05) than sperm collected with the traditional stripping method. In conclusion, collection of sperm with a catheter was shown to effectively reduce urine contamination and is therefore recommended for the collection of Caspian brown trout sperm. The article presents a study on the effects of live food, two prepared diets, and both foods on Persian sturgeon acipenser persicus. The study evaluates specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor (CF), and body weight increase (BWI) in acipenser persicus fed with artemia franciscana, prepared diets from Coppens Co. and as formulated at International Sturgeon Research Institute (ISRI), and both. Result shows that combined live and formulated diets lead to greater weight among the three diets.

A 7-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the combined effects of propionic acid (PA, 5 or 10 g/kg) and a multi-strain Bacillus spp. (Bacillus subtilis IS02 (accession no. JN856456) and B. licheniformis IBRC-M 11,319) (1.7 × 10 7  CFU/g) probiotic in a plant protein source (PP)-rich diet (∼70% of dietary protein derived from PP sources) on performance of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) fry (initial body weight 2.97 ± 0.11 g). In this regard, six isoproteic (∼48%) diets were formulated as follows: a control (without supplementation of the additives); probiotic (only contained Bacillus spp. mixture); 5 g PA/kg diet; 10 g PA/kg diet; probiotic + 5 g PA/kg diet, and probiotic + 10 g PA/kg diet. Specific growth rate in fish fed with 10 g PA/kg (2.84 ± 0.1%) and diets contained blends of probiotic and PA (2.76 ± 0.19% in probiotic + 5 g PA, and 2.79 ± 0.04% in probiotic + 10 g PA) was better than in the control (2.45 ± 0.1%) (P < 0.05). Feed conversion ratio in fish fed with 10 g PA/kg (0.92 ± 0.12) and diets contained blends of probiotic and PA (0.94 ± 0.06 in probiotic + 5 g PA and 0.91 ± 0.02 in probiotic + 10 g PA) was better than in the control (1.24 ± 0.08) (P < 0.05). Digestive enzymes including α-amylase, total alkaline proteases, and bile salt dependent lipase activities improved in fish fed diets contained additives. The activity of glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione reductase enhanced in the liver of fish fed diets contained additives. The relative abundance of lysozyme, interleukin 1β, and insulin-like growth factor-1 genes mRNA transcript showed multifold increase in the liver of fish fed with the 10 g PA/kg and diets contained blends of probiotic and PA (P < 0.05). Decreasing low molecular weight can improve the digestibility and availability of ingredients such as sodium alginate. This study aimed to test the four dosages of low molecular weight sodium alginate (LMWSA) (0%: Control, 0.05%: 0.5 LMWSA, 0.10%: 1.0 LMWSA, and 0.2%: 2.0 LMWSA) in whiteleg shrimp ( Litopenaeus vannamei ) (3.88 ± 0.25 g) for eight weeks. After finishing the trial, shrimp were exposed to cadmium (1 mg/L) for 48 h. While feed conversion ratio (FCR) improved in shrimp fed dietary 2.0 LMWSA ( p < 0.05), there was no significant difference in growth among treatments. The results showed a linear relation between LMWSA level and FCR, and glutathione S-transferase (GST) before; and malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), GST, and alanine transaminase (ALT) after cadmium stress ( p < 0.05). The GST, MDA, ALT, and aspartate transaminase (AST) contents were changed after stress but not the 2.0 LMWSA group. The survival rate after stress in 1.0 LMWSA (85.23%) and 2.0 LMWSA (80.20%) treatments was significantly higher than the Control (62.05%). The survival rate after stress negatively correlated with GST and ALT, introducing them as potential biomarkers for cadmium exposure in whiteleg shrimp. Accordingly, the 2.0 LMWSA treatment had the best performance in the abovementioned parameters. As the linear relation was observed, supplementing more levels of LMWSA to reach a plateau is recommended.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is having a disruptive and transformative effect on clinical medicine. Prompt clinical diagnosis and imaging are critical for minimizing the morbidity and mortality associated with ischemic strokes. Clinicians must understand the current strengths and limitations of AI to provide optimal patient care. Ischemic stroke is one of the medical fields that have been extensively evaluated by artificial intelligence. Presented herein is a review of artificial intelligence applied to clinical management of stroke, geared toward clinicians. In this review, we explain the basic concept of AI and machine learning. This review is without coding and mathematical details and targets the clinicians involved in stroke management without any computer or mathematics' background. Radiomics has achieved significant momentum in radiology research and can reveal image information invisible to radiologists' eyes. Radiomics first evolved for oncologic imaging. Oncologic applications (histopathology, tumor grading, gene mutation analysis, patient survival, and treatment response prediction) of radiomics are widespread. However, it is not limited to oncologic analysis, and any digital medical images can benefit from radiomics analysis. Introduction Ventricular shunting remains the standard of care for patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH); however, not all patients benefit from the shunting. Prediction of response in advance can result in improved patient selection for ventricular shunting. This study aims to develop a machine learning predictive model for treatment response after shunt placement using the clinical and radiomics features. Methods In this retrospective pilot study, the medical records of iNPH patients who underwent ventricular shunting were evaluated. In each patient, the "idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus grading scale" (iNPHGS) and a "Modified Rankin Scale" were calculated before and after surgery. The subsequent treatment response was calculated as the difference between the iNPHGS scores before and after surgery. iNPHGS score reduction of two or more than two were considered as treatment response. The presurgical MRI scans were evaluated by radiologists, the ventricular systems were segmented on the T2-weighted images, and the radiomics features were extracted from the segmented ventricular system. Using Orange data mining open-source platform, different machine learning models were then developed based on the presurgical clinical features and the selected radiomics features to predict treatment response after shunt placement. Results After the implementation of the inclusion criteria, 78 patients were included in this study. One hundred twenty radiomics features were extracted, and the 12 best predictive radiomics features were selected. Using only clinical data (iNPHGS and Modified Rankin Scale), the random forest model achieved the best performance in treatment prediction with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.71. Adding the Radiomics analysis to the clinical data improved the prediction performance, with the support vector machine (SVM) achieving the highest rank in treatment prediction with an AUC of 0.8. Adding age and sex to the analysis did not improve the prediction. Conclusion Using machine learning models for treatment response prediction in patients with iNPH is feasible with acceptable accuracy. Adding the Radiomics analysis to the clinical features can further improve the predictive performance. Parapharyngeal space (PPS) masses are relatively rare lesions of the head and neck, and account for 0.5-1.5% of head and neck lesions. The most common lesion to occur in the PPS is a benign salivary neoplasm, typically pleomorphic adenoma either from the deep parotid or from ectopic parotid tissue rests within the PPS. A calcified or ossified mass in this location is exceedingly rare, but a calcified variant of pleomorphic adenoma has been reported. In this study, we present a patient with a heavily calcified PPS mesenchymal chondrosarcoma with an unusual presentation. We discuss the imaging and pathologic findings followed by a review of the current literature.

Critical illness-associated cerebral microbleed (CICM) is a relatively rare and newly described condition. It can occur in critically ill ICU patients and can be secondary to many underlying etiologies. CICM is associated with high mortality and permanent neurologic deficits in surviving patients. Distribution of cerebral microhemorrhages in neuroimaging findings is critical for accurate diagnosis of this condition. COVID-19 infection is less common in children (with higher fetal hemoglobin levels). In our preliminary study, we also observed a low prevalence and fatality of COVID-19 in countries with high rate of hemoglobinopathy carries. Given these two facts, the hemoglobin structure can play a role in the physiopathology of COVID-19 disease. Several drugs are known to increase fetal hemoglobin in adults. Background: Given the current pandemic, differentiation between pneumonia induced by COVID-19 or influenza viruses is of utmost clinical significance in the patients' management. For this purpose, this study was conducted to develop sensitive artificial intelligence (AI) models to assist radiologists to decisively differentiate pneumonia due to COVID-19 versus influenza viruses., Methods: Cross sectional chest CT images (N=12744) from well-evaluated cases of pneumonias induced by COVID-19 or H1N1 Influenza viruses, and normal individuals were collected. We examined the computer tomographic (CT) chest images from 137 individuals. Various pre-trained convolutional neural network models, such as ResNet-50, InceptionV3, Wide ResNet, SqueezNet, VGG 16 and VGG 19 were fine-tuned on our datasets. The datasets were used for training (60%), validation (20%), and testing (20%) of the final models. Also, the predictive power and means of precision and recall were determined for each model., Results: Fine-tuned ResNet-50 model differentiated the pneumonia due to COVID-19 or H1N1 influenza virus with accuracies of 96.7% and 92%, respectively This model outperformed all others, i.e., InceptionV3, Wide ResNet, SqueezNet, VGG 16 and VGG 19., Conclusion: Fine-tuned and pre-trained image classifying models of AI enable radiologists to reliably differentiate the pneumonia induced by COVID-19 versus H1N1 influenza virus. For this purpose, ResNet-50 followed by InceptionV3 models proved more promising than other AI models. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salinity on the acute and sub-chronic toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in Persian sturgeon. This was evaluated by exposing Persian sturgeon to AgNPs in three salinities: freshwater (F: 0.4 ppt), brackish water 1 (B 1 : 6 ± 0.2 ppt), and brackish water 2 (B 2 : 12 ± 0.3 ppt) for 14 days, which was followed by analysis of alterations in plasma chemistry and histopathology of the gills, liver, and intestine. Values of 96-h median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) were calculated as 0.89 mg/L in F, 2.07 mg/L in B 1 , and 1.59 mg/L in B 2 . After sub-chronic exposures, plasma cortisol, glucose, potassium, and sodium levels illustrated no significant changes within each salinity level. In F, 0.2 mg/L AgNP caused the highest levels of alkaline phosphatase and osmolality levels. In B 1 , 0.6 mg/L AgNP induced the highest level of alkaline phosphatase and elevated plasma osmolality was recorded in all AgNP-exposed treatments in comparison with the controls. The B 2 treatment combined with 0.6 mg/L AgNP significantly reduced plasma chloride level. The results showed elevating salinity significantly increased osmolality, chloride, sodium, and potassium levels of plasma in the fish exposed to AgNPs. The abundance of the tissue lesions was AgNP concentration-dependent, where the highest number of damages was observed in the gills, followed by liver and intestine, respectively. The histopathological study also confirmed alterations such as degeneration of lamella, lifting of lamellar epithelium, hepatic vacuolation, pyknotic nuclei, and cellular infiltration of the lamina propria elicited by AgNPs in the gills, liver, and intestine of Persian sturgeon. In conclusion, the stability of AgNPs in aquatic environments can be regulated by changing the salinity, noting that AgNPs are more stable in low salinity waters.

Background: A rare but important complication related to otherwise uneventful brain and spine surgery is becoming more recognized and more frequently reported in the medical literature. This has been variably labeled as pseudohypoxic brain swelling or postoperative hypotension-associated venous congestion. This poorly understood condition occurs in the setting of surgical intervention and is thought to be related to cerebrospinal fluid leak or evacuation, decreased intracranial pressure, and subsequent development of deep venous congestion affecting the basal ganglia, thalami, and cerebellum. Clinically, patients may have global neurologic deficit and outcomes range from full recovery to vegetative state or death. The imaging correlate includes atypical edema, infarction, or hemorrhage and can overlap the appearance of diffuse hypoxic injury, for which this condition can be mistaken both clinically and radiologically. Although this deep brain tissue edema can be associated with other signs of cerebrospinal fluid hypotension such as dural thickening, brain sagging, and cerebellar herniation, it can be isolated, making the diagnosis challenging., Case Description: We present 2 cases of unexpected clinical deterioration occurring in patients with otherwise uncomplicated neurosurgery, 1 with craniotomy and the other with lumbar spine intervention. Both patients exhibit similar appearing edema in the deep gray structures on postoperative magnetic resonance imaging scans. The RAPID© software is the most commonly used computed tomography perfusion (CTP) software in stroke centers. It is estimated that about 1300 hospitals in the world are using this software for decision-making in ischemic stroke. The software provides the estimated volume of infarction and ischemic penumbra, so it is the backbone of treatment planning in these patients. In this manuscript, we present two cases of subacute infarction with misleading CTP using RAPID© software. We believe that given the popularity of this software and increasing application of CTP in subacute infarction, this pitfall is likely underdiagnosed in many patients. In a subacute phase of infarction, we recommend diffusion-weighted imaging magnetic resonance imaging (DWI-MRI) for estimation of infarction to avoid this pitfall and possible mismanagement.

This study investigated the effect of the dietary supplementation of bovine lactoferrin (LF) on growth performance, hematological and immunological parameters, antioxidant enzymes activity and disease resistance against Vibrio harveyi in yellowfin sea bream (Acanthopagrus latus) fingerling. The fish with initial body weight 10 ± 0.3 g were randomly distributed at 10 fish per each 250 L fiberglass tank, and fed with four experimental diets (a control basal diet and three supplemented diets with 400, 800 and 1200 mg LF kg -1 diet) for 8 weeks. The obtained results showed that fish fed with LF supplemented diets had significantly higher final body weight as compared to control diet (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences between LF-treatments and the control group in white blood cell counts, red blood cell counts, hemoglobin and hematocrit. Total protein and complement activity (ACH50) in the serum of yellowfin sea bream were enhanced with increasing the dietary LF supplementation level (P < 0.05). The mucus lysozyme activity in fish fed on 800 and 1200 mg LF kg -1 was significantly higher than those fed on 400 mg LF kg -1 and control fish (P < 0.05). None of the antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase) was affected by LF supplementation (P > 0.05). Fish fed with dietary LF had a significantly higher survival rate than those fed with the control diet after challenge with Vibrio harveyi (P < 0.05). Purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI) has accelerated novel discoveries across multiple disciplines including medicine. Clinical medicine suffers from a lack of AI-based applications, potentially due to lack of awareness of AI methodology. Future collaboration between computer scientists and clinicians is critical to maximize the benefits of transformative technology in this field for patients. To illustrate, we describe AI-based advances in the diagnosis and management of gliomas, the most common primary central nervous system (CNS) malignancy. Methods: Presented is a succinct description of foundational concepts of AI approaches and their relevance to clinical medicine, geared toward clinicians without computer science backgrounds. We also review novel AI approaches in the diagnosis and management of glioma. Results: Novel AI approaches in gliomas have been developed to predict the grading and genomics from imaging, automate the diagnosis from histopathology, and provide insight into prognosis. Conclusion: Novel AI approaches offer acceptable performance in gliomas. Further investigation is necessary to improve the methodology and determine the full clinical utility of these novel approaches.

Purpose: Superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis (SOVT) is an extremely rare condition. Few studies have been published about clinical aspects of this condition. In this study, we have studied the symptoms, underlying etiologies, treatment, pathogenesis and complication of the SOVT and we tried to classify it based on the etiology, treatment, and prognosis., Methods: We reviewed the patients' data from a tertiary academic referral center. Each patient with SOVT was then reviewed for symptoms associated with SOVT, underlying etiology, treatment protocol, treatment response, complications, possible pathogens, and final outcome., Results: Twenty-four cases of SOVT were included in this study. Overall, 13 cases were diagnosed as right-sided SOVT, out of which, eight had simultaneous right-sided cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST). Eighteen cases were diagnosed to have left-sided SOVT, out of which, 11 had simultaneous left-sided CST., Conclusions: The SOVT can be secondary to different mechanisms. The SOVT secondary to trauma, recent surgery and coagulopathy are mostly non-aggressive, and can be managed by conservative therapy and anticoagulation. The SOVT in patients with orbital cellulitis, history of active sinusitis or paranasal sinus surgery are aggressive presenting with acute orbital swelling, abscess and visual loss. This type of SOVT can be complicated by extension to the cavernous sinus and intracranial structures. These patients require urgent antibiotics therapy and sinus surgery. The oxidative status and intestinal and liver histology of Barramundi Perch Lates calcarifer juveniles were investigated in an experiment using different tank colors (black, red, blue, and white) over 6 weeks. It has been previously shown that background color can affect physiological processes in different species. The background colors did not cause significant differences in malondialdehyde, catalase, or glutathione S-transferase, whereas superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were significantly higher in fish that were kept in black tanks. Plasma cortisol of fish adapted to blue and white tanks was significantly lower than that of fish in black tanks. The liver total antioxidant capacity was highest for fish that were maintained in white and blue tanks. The results of histopathological evaluation revealed that tank colors did not have significant effects on intestinal mucosal and enterocyte dimensions. No specific alterations were found in the liver or intestine of fish relative to the tank background color during the experimental period. BACKGROUND Rapunzel syndrome is a rare condition involving the extension of bezoars from the stomach to the distal gastrointestinal tract. Laparotomy remains the gold standard treatment for this condition because of the size of the bezoars. Although bacterial peritonitis is a known complication of laparotomy in Rapunzel syndrome, very few cases of post-surgical fungal peritonitis have been reported in these patients. CASE REPORT In this case report we present Rapunzel syndrome complicated by post-surgical fungal peritonitis and formation of fungus balls. To our knowledge, fungal peritonitis with fungus balls has never been reported as a Rapunzel syndrome complication.  CONCLUSIONS It is important to cover Candida and other fungi with an antifungal regimen in pediatric patients with Rapunzel syndrome pre- and post-surgery. In addition, prolonged fever and septic symptoms post-surgery warrant a search for peritoneal fungus balls that are not simply responsive to anti-fungal therapy and may necessitate repeat laparotomy.

This study examined the effect of freezing rate (-10 °C, -15 °C, -20 °C, -30 °C, and -40 °C/min) on motility parameters, rates of fertilization and hatching, ATP content, and indices of oxidative stress including thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and carbonyl derivatives of proteins in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) sperm. After sampling, sperm was diluted in an extender composed of 23.4-mM sucrose, 0.25-mM KCl, and 30-mM Tris-HCl, pH 8.0, containing 10% methanol and subsequently frozen in a programmable freezer. For postthaw sperm that were frozen at a rate of -40 °C/min, sperm motile duration (134 ± 27.01 seconds), sperm motile percent (60 ± 4.1%), fertilizability (72 ± 8.36% for fertilization rate and 65 ± 7.58% for hatching rate), and ATP content (4.8 ± 0.57 nmol/10(8) sperm) were significantly higher than for sperm frozen at any of the four slower rates (P < 0.05). Moreover, sperm cryopreserved using the fastest freezing rate had significantly lower levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (0.5 ± 0.05 nmol/10(8) sperm) and carbonyl derivatives of proteins (41.3 ± 4.9 nmol/10(8) sperm) than sperm cryopreserved using all other freezing rates (P < 0.05). In addition, there is a significant difference (P < 0.05) between fresh sperm and the recovery of cryopreserved Persian sturgeon sperm using programmable freezing with -40 °C/min being the optimal freezing rate among those tested., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Introduction: It has been reported that a novel type of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan called echo planar magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (EP-MRSI) may show antidepressant effects. We examined whether the two routine diagnostic protocols of MRI [T1 and echo planar diffusion weighted imaging (EPI-DWI)], have antidepressant-like effects in an animal model of depression., Methods: The effects of standard EPI-DWI and T1 MRI on immobility, swimming and climbing times in the modified forced swimming test (FST) in mice were examined. After exposure to the first session of modified forced swimming test, we randomly divided the mice into four groups. The first group (T1 MRI group, n=21) received a 15-minute stimulation of T1 sequence. The second group (EPI-DWI MRI group, n=21) received a 15-minute stimulation of EPI-DWI protocol. The third group (sham group, n=21) spent 15 min in a tunnel similar to the MRI gantry in terms of size, temperature and light intensity and received recorded sounds from a normal session of EPI-DWI with similar duration and intensity. The fourth group acted as controls (n=21). The second session of the modified FST was conducted twelve hours later. The mean of immobility, swimming and climbing times in this session were compared to the control group., Results: T1 weighted and EPI-DWI MRI groups showed a reduction in immobility time compared to the control group (P value<0.002, P value<0.017 respectively). This effect is comparable to that seen in the FST after the administration of antidepressant agents. The climbing time in the group subjected to EPI-DWI MRI was longer than the control group (P value<0.035). Previous studies showed similar effects after the administration of antidepressant drugs affecting the catecholamine systems. The swimming time in the T1 MRI group was significantly longer than the control group (P value<0.037). Previous studies showed qualitatively similar effect to that of anti-depressant drugs affecting the serotoninergic systems. The swimming, climbing and immobility times in the sham and control groups showed no significant difference., Conclusions: Our findings raise the possibility that MRI-based stimulation may have antidepressant-like effects in mice. This is likely to be through different mechanisms in T1 weighted and EPI-DWI protocols. However the possible biological basis of this effect is not yet understood and we would advocate further studies of MRI-based stimulation effects on transmitters in the different organs in the body specially the brain.
