The present study investigated the relationship between lexicon and grammar in individuals who use graphic symbol-based aided augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Data came from 60 transcripts of generalization sessions that were part of two previous intervention studies, aimed at improving the expressive vocabulary and grammar of 12 children and youth who used graphic symbol-based AAC. The specific aims of the current study were to (a) describe vocabulary composition across different levels of expressive vocabulary and (b) analyze the relationship between global measures of expressive vocabulary and the use of grammar in individuals who use aided AAC. A series of multiple linear mixed effect regression analyses showed a positive predictive association between overall vocabulary size and the use of closed-class words, and a positive relationship between the use of verbs and the use of closed-class words. Additionally, the use of verbs had a significant positive association with the use of inflectional morphology, while the use of nouns did not. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed.

Multilingual individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) often shift between language environments and speakers of different languages; thus, code-switching (or alternating between languages or dialects within or across contexts) becomes necessary for effective communication. Recently, AAC product developers have responded to this need by building multilingual AAC systems; however, research in multilingualism and AAC is lacking. In this paper, we discuss theoretical and practical implications for research related to code-switching using aided AAC. We use available literature investigating the sociolinguistic, psycholinguistic, and usage-based aspects of code-switching in spoken or signed modalities as a starting point for considering code-switching using aided AAC. We present examples illustrating the varied expression of codeswitching across aided AAC modalities and discuss directions for future research.

For children with complex communication needs in the early stages of language development, access to appropriate vocabulary provides a means for social interaction and participation, and the foundation for the acquisition of grammar and other language related skills. While numerous resources are available to support decision making for speakers of English, there is a pressing need to rapidly expand such resources for other languages. Spanish is the official language in 20 countries, and in other countries (e.g., United States) Spanish-speaking communities represent a substantial proportion of the population. The aim of this study was to produce a developmentally-relevant word list for use by Spanish-speaking children in the early stages of language development. The list was developed from an analysis of overlap between published and validated lists of words produced by young Spanish speaking children with typical development. The list includes a wide range of word classes and semantic categories and is proposed as a tool to assist professionals, families and software developers in the process of selecting an initial lexicon for children who require AAC and are learning Spanish. Implications of our findings for vocabulary selection and future research directions are discussed.

Conversational repair has been found to play a fundamental role in the acquisition of language. This paper describes existing research on conversational repair and its relationship to language learning, whether a first language or a second language, as well as its relevance to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). A case is made for incorporating prompts to repair in conversation-based language interventions with children learning to use AAC. We argue that interventions targeting linguistic complexity should encourage self-repair in conversation in order to develop linguistic and operational competency as well as increase automaticity when using AAC. Clinical implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Purpose: Caregivers play a critical role in their children's development and serve as their primary communication partners. Family interactions provide the most naturally occurring opportunities for children with complex communication needs to learn language in the context of family routines. A growing body of research suggests that caregivers can effectively support their children's use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems when provided with appropriate training and coaching through caregiver-implemented interventions (CIIs). However, the efficacy of these interventions remains untested among culturally and linguistically diverse caregivers. Given the increasing diversity in the United States, there is a pressing need to develop CIIs that align with the cultural and linguistic preferences of diverse families. Method: Using the Ecological Validity Framework and the Checklist for Cultural Adaptations, this tutorial explores considerations for culturally adapting caregiver-implemented AAC interventions for Latinx caregivers of children with AAC needs. The aim is to ensure that interventions are relevant, meaningful, and respectful of cultural and linguistic practices. Through carefully crafted cultural adaptations, interventions can achieve greater acceptance by caregivers. Results and Discussion: This tutorial suggests a series of cultural adaptations to ensure accessibility, sustainability, and success of caregiverimplemented AAC interventions for Latinx caregivers of children with AAC needs. By incorporating cultural and linguistic considerations into the intervention design, we can enhance its acceptability among Latinx caregivers. Abstract\nSharing personal stories with others is essential to human interaction and language development. To communicate, individuals use a variety of semiotic resources, including images, symbols, and written and spoken language. These modes are deployed in the co-construction of a daily face-to-face conversation. A self-created film can serve as a valuable resource to facilitate a deeper understanding of a personal experience, especially where spoken or written language may present a challenge, for example, for people who rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Although the AAC literature indicates that using videos delivers benefits for aided communicators, guidelines on how to self-create, use, and transcribe them are rare. The present paper, a tutorial, describes how people who use AAC can develop a personal-video-scene (PVS) via the Film as Observable Communication (FaOC) method to utilize self-created films in sharing their stories. The first part of this paper, the theoretical framework, describes theories, methods, and practices from the fields of AAC, social semiotics, and visual anthropology, on which the FaOC method is based. Purpose: The development of culturally and linguistically appropriate resources to support communication interventions for underserved communities is an urgent necessity. The purpose of the study was to obtain stakeholder feedback on vocabulary items from a Sepedi core vocabulary list developed as a resource for vocabulary selection for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, and to expand the list based on stakeholders' vocabulary recommendations. Method: A questionnaire was used to obtain the ratings of 57 stakeholders regarding the importance of including 155 Sepedi words from the Sepedi core vocabulary list on an AAC system for a child with receptive language skills at the level of a 4-year-old or higher. Stakeholders also suggested additional words to include on the system. Result: All words were rated as important or very important. However, there was a statistically significant inverse relationship between the average frequency of occurrence of words belonging to a specific category and the average importance rating that stakeholders assigned to words in that category. A total of 48 words were additionally suggested by three or more stakeholders. Conclusion: Stakeholder ratings validated the list as relevant to consult in vocabulary selection for Sepedi AAC systems for children. There has been an increasing body of research to uncover the relationship between creativity and intelligence. This relationship usually has been examined using traditional measures of intelligence and seldom using new approaches (i.e. Ferrando et al. 2005). In this work, creativity is measured by tools developed based on Sternberg's successful intelligence theory. Our aims were two-folded: to examine the relationship between intelligence and creativity and to investigate possible differences on the creative process depending on students' level of intelligence. A total of 385 students from primary and secondary schools took part in the study. Students completed 5 tasks from the Aurora Battery aimed to measure the synthetic-creative intelligence. They also completed the Cattell's general intelligence test. The results showed that there were statistically significant differences depending on students' level of intelligence on the five tasks of creativity, always favouring the more intelligent group. In relation to the creative process, the three groups (low, average and highly intelligent students) showed similar patterns: they performed better at the end and weaker at the beginning of mot of the tasks. Students with lower intelligence were more stable in their performance across tasks than students with average and higher I.Q were.

The present study investigated the effects of different types of recasts and prompts on the rate of repair and spontaneous use of novel vocabulary by eight children with severe motor speech disabilities who used speech-generating technologies to communicate. Data came from 60 transcripts of clinical sessions that were part of a conversation-based intervention designed to teach them pronouns, verbs, and verb inflections. The results showed that, when presented alone, interrogative choice and declarative recasts led to the highest rates of child repair. The results also showed that when children were presented with recasts and prompts to repair, the rate of repair increased. Spontaneous use of linguistic targets was significantly and positively related to conversational sequences where the adult recast was followed by child repair. These findings suggest that using different recast types and prompts to repair may be beneficial for spontaneous use of linguistic targets in this population.

Much attention has been paid to emotional intelligence and its correlations with other psychological constructs during the last few years. Nevertheless, studies focusing on emotionally intelligent persons are scarce. The present work aims to study the cognitive and creative profile of students who stand out for their high emotional intelligence. A total of 1,024 Secondary Education students (M = 14 years old, SD = 1.16) took part in our research to that end. Emotional Intelligence was measured using the Emotional Quotient inventory Youth Version (EQ-i:YV, Bar-on & Parker, 2000), the Differential Aptitude Test-5 (DAT-5, Bennett, Seashore, & Wesman, 2000) was used to measure intellectual competency, whereas the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT, Torrance, 1974) served to measure creativity. Participants were divided into two groups: those with a high emotional intelligence (pc > 75) and those with a low-average emotional intelligence (pc < 75). The results reveal statistically significant differences in numerical reasoning, spatial reasoning and perceptive speed favouring the low-average emotional intelligence group. No statistically significant differences were found for creativity dimensions depending on the emotional intelligence level.

Core vocabulary lists and vocabulary inventories vary according to language. Lists from one language cannot and should not be assumed to be translatable, as words represent language-specific concepts and grammar. In this manuscript, we (a) present the results of a vocabulary overlap analysis between different published core vocabulary lists in English, Korean, Spanish, and Sepedi; (b) discuss the concept of universal semantic primes as a set of universal concepts that are posited to be language-independent; and (c) provide a list of common words shared across all four languages as exemplars of their semantic primes. The resulting common core words and their corresponding semantic primes can assist families and professionals in thinking about the initial steps in the development of AAC systems for their bilingual/multilingual clients. Method: Eight children aged from 8 to 13 years participated in the study. After a baseline period, a conversation-based intervention was provided for each participant, in which they were supported to learn and use linguistic structures essential for the formation of clauses and the grammaticalization of their utterances, such as pronouns, verbs, and bound morphemes, in the context of personally meaningful and scaffolded conversations with trained clinicians. The conversations were videotaped, transcribed, and analyzed using the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (SALT; Miller & Chapman, 1991). Results: Results indicate that participants showed improvements in their use of spontaneous clauses, and a greater use of pronouns, verbs, and bound morphemes. These improvements were sustained and generalized to conversations with familiar partners. Conclusion: The results demonstrate the positive effects of the conversation-based intervention for improving the expressive vocabulary and grammatical skills of children with severe motor speech disorders and expressive language delay who use augmentative and alternative communication. Clinical and theoretical implications of conversation-based interventions are discussed and future research needs are identified.

Introduction: The aim of the present work is to advance in the study of creativity-intelligence relationship looking into the students' cognitive profiles. It is hypothesized that, if creative ideas emerge as result of connecting distant concepts, and a balanced cognitive profile (without significant differences between ability levels) can facilitate these distant connections; Then, creative individuals would be characterized by a balanced and flat cognitive profile; lacking valleys and peaks. It is hypothesized that, if creativity occurs as a result of relating distant concepts, a more balanced profile among cognitive abilities--a flat profile--could facilitate a loose relationship between concepts. Therefore, creative individuals would present a cognitive profile with less peaks and troughs. Method: 679 secondary students, aged between 12 and 17 years old (M = 13.86, SD = 1.25), took part in this study. The TTCT and the DAT-5 were used to assess participants' creativity and cognitive profile, respectively. Students were divided into three groups: those with low, average and high creativity. The cognitive profile of each group was analyzed searching for peaks. Results: Results point out that, contrary to our hypothesis, the cognitive profile of creative individuals is not different from their non-creative peers. Discussion and conclusions: It is possible that the hypothesis of a flatter cognitive profile of highly creative students does not work for a normal population, since students with lower intelligence also tend to show lower creativity. This hypothesis may be useful to explain differences in creativity in students with medium-high intelligence. (Contains 3 tables and 1 figure.)

Adult co-construction with children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has been found to facilitate child communicative competence in general, but few studies have examined adult co-construction during the telling of personal narratives. This study explored the use of adult co-constructive strategies during personal storytelling with a child who used AAC. Case study discourse analysis methodology was utilized to analyze the types of co-construction strategies employed and the effectiveness of these co-construction strategies during an intervention session with a speech-language pathologist and a child who used AAC. The study concluded that use of child-centered co-construction strategies, including elicitation, question asking, prompts, positive praise, repetitions, and modeling of vocabulary and grammar, might be a facilitative factor in supporting the personal narratives of children who use AAC. Clinical implications for using child-centered co-construction during dyadic exchanges with children who use AAC are discussed. (Contains 1 table.)

Children who use augmentative and alternative communication have been found to experience significant difficulties in the production of fictional and personal narratives. The important role of personal narratives in establishing personal and social identity has received substantial attention in developmental psychology but little attention in the field of communication disorders. The present study analyzes the effect of an intervention program designed to improve the personal narrative skills of three girls who experience severe communication disorders and use AAC. The study included two personal narrative activities, a description of a personally meaningful photograph and a recount of a personal experience. Our findings indicate that participation in the intervention program had a positive effect on the participants' abilities to produce personal narratives. Learning outcomes: Participants will demonstrate better understanding of activities to use, strategies to implement, and methods for measuring progress when providing personal narrative intervention for students who use AAC. Narrative abilities have been linked to literacy, communicative competence and development of identity. Children who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) may be at risk for difficulties in the development of narrative skills due to differences in their language learning opportunities and limitations of their AAC systems. The structural dimensions of the narrative discourse produced by children who use AAC have been observed to be poorly organized, limited in coherence and severely impoverished in both vocabulary and grammar. In addition, the children usually rely heavily on narrative co-construction and may not be given sufficient opportunities by their communication partners to provide narrative features. This study describes the process used to support the development of autonomous narrative skills of an eight-year old child who uses a voice output communication aid (VOCA) to communicate and who demonstrates significant delays in narrative formation. Results indicate that narratives produced with her VOCA improved in both linguistic and story complexity following intervention that targeted understanding and use of story structures.

This study reports descriptive findings regarding the scaffolding strategies used by an experienced practitioner during a shared book reading session with a student who uses augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Specific scaffolding strategies are described and, in addition, the level of semantic complexity targeted by the practitioner during the session was examined. The majority of scaffolding strategies targeted higher levels of semantic complexity such as metalanguage, inference and interpretation. Results of this work may contribute to the design of storybook reading as a context for narrative language intervention for children who use AAC.

The ability to narrate a story is fundamental to the development of overall communicative competence and involves the coordination of a variety of knowledge structures and linguistic abilities. In this study, the narrative discourse abilities of four children who use AAC are described in the context of five tasks designed to elicit a spectrum of narrative skills. Assessment was achieved through application of the Narrative Assessment Profile tool [Bliss, L. S., McCabe, A., & Miranda A. E. (1998). Narrative assessment profile: Discourse analysis for school-age children. "Journal of Communication Disorders," 31, 347-362.] and analysis of seven major story elements. Our results indicate that most narrative discourse dimensions in our participating children appeared to be compromised and in need of intervention. Discussion includes aspects of narrative intervention and suggested topics for further research. Learning outcomes: The reader will be able to: (1) create a list of issues involved in the development of narrative abilities of children who depend on augmentative and alternative communication systems (AAC) and (2) describe the issues involved in assessing the narrative skills of children who use AAC.

Researchers in 2 studies investigated the effectiveness of a general education/special education collaborative teaming process in increasing the engagement, development, and learning of preschoolers with severe disabilities who were placed in general education early childhood programs that operated under a team-teaching model. The process included monthly team meetings to develop educational and social supports for targeted preschoolers, which were then collaboratively implemented by the educational team members. Study 1 focused on 3 teams composed of early childhood and special education teachers, instructional assistants, speech-language therapists, and parents who supported a child with significant disabilities attending one of the 3 participating preschools. Study 2 extended the collaborative teaming model to include all preschoolers with disabilities attending one of the preschool programs from the first study who required intensive levels of support (4 children). The effectiveness of the collaborative development and implementation of support plans -- and the extent to which the collaborative teaming process was judged to be natural to the existing classroom culture and useful in producing positive child outcomes --was evaluated in both studies.
