Abstract

This work discusses the challenges of space exploration, focusing on microgravityinduced physiological changes, particularly those affecting the vestibular system, which significantly alters human performance in space, necessitating effective countermeasures. In microgravity, astronauts experience disorientation and space motion sickness due to changes in vestibular input, leading to symptoms like vertigo and headache. Postflight, astronauts show various neurological changes, similar to symptoms in individuals with vestibular disorders experiencing significant cognitive and perceptual difficulties. Studies have also shown that microgravity affects cortical and sensory responses, altering perception, motor function, and brain connectivity. Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) is explored as a countermeasure, using modulated electrical currents to evoke neuronal activity in vestibular end-organs, potentially stabilizing posture and gaze in microgravity. The work proposes that GVS could serve as a non-invasive intervention to help adapt to space environments by enhancing vestibular function and possibly aiding cognitive functions and underscores the need for continued research into the vestibular system's role in human health and performance during space missions. Abstract

Introducción. La vainilla se cultiva en agreoecosistemas bajo diversa intensidad de manejo, con características ambientales particulares que podrían ser desfavorables para la orquídea. Las condiciones atmosféricas son importantes, debido al cambio climático. Objetivo. Caracterizar las condiciones climáticas y microclimáticas de tres sistemas productivos de vainilla (Vanilla planifolia Jacks. ex Andrews). Materiales y métodos. El estudio se realizó en tres sistemas productivos de vainilla ubicados en Veracruz y Oaxaca, México. Se utilizaron tres intensidades de manejo: a) acahual, bajo sombra de diversas especies arbóreas; b) monocultivo, intercalado con una especie arbórea y c) malla sombra (con sombra artificial). Se abarcó un año de monitoreo (diciembre-2020 a noviembre-2021), que incluyó cuatro temporadas climáticas, dos frías y dos cálidas. Se midieron variables climáticas (de la región) y microclimáticas (de la parcela): temperatura (T), humedad relativa (HR) y radiación fotosintéticamente activa (RFA, solo en el microclima), con estaciones automatizadas; además se calculó el déficit de presión de vapor (DPV). Resultados. A escala diaria, las condiciones climáticas como microclimáticas en el acahual fueron más favorables para el cultivo de vainilla en las cuatro temporadas evaluadas; el monocultivo y la malla sombra experimentaron condiciones de humedad y temperatura fuera de los requerimientos agroclimáticos de la vainilla, principalmente en marzo-mayo (MAM), con Tmax >32 °C y HR 2 kPa) indicó periodos más prolongados de estrés hídrico en estos sistemas. Conclusiones. El monocultivo y la malla sombra presentaron condiciones de humedad y temperatura desfavorables para la vainilla, con más periodos de estrés hídrico. El acahual presentó las condiciones climáticas y microclimáticas más convenientes para el cultivo de vainilla.

Abstract

This fluid dynamics video is an entry for the Gallery of Fluid Motion for the 66th Annual Meeting of the Fluid Dynamics Division of the American Physical Society. We show the curious behaviour of a light ball interacting with a liquid jet. For certain conditions, a ball can be suspended into a slightly inclined liquid jet. We studied this phenomenon using a high speed camera. The visualizations show that the object can be `juggled' for a variety of flow conditions. A simple calculation showed that the ball remains at a stable position due to a Bernoulli-like effect. The phenomenon is very stable and easy to reproduce., Comment: Two videos

9. Formation and displacement of bubbles in a packed bed

Abstract

The fluid dynamics video show a gas stream which is injected into a packed bed immersed in water and fluid dynamcis video present the dynamics involved. The refractive index of the water an the packed bed are quite similar and the edges of the spherical particles can be seen. Two distinctive regimens can be observed. The first one, for low air flow rates, which is characterized by the percolation of the air thought the interstitial space among particles. And the second one, for high air flow rates, which is characterized by the accumulation of air inside the packed bed without percolation, it can be observed that the bubble pull apart the particles apart. Furthermore, for the first case the position of the particles remains constant while for the second one a circulation of particles is induced by the bubbles flow.

10. Oil filaments produced by an impeller in a water stirred thank

Abstract

In this video, the mechanism followed to disperse an oil phase in water using a Scaba impeller in a cylindrical tank is presented. Castor oil (viscosity = 500 mPas) is used and the Reynolds number was fixed to 24,000. The process was recorded with a high-speed camera. Initially, the oil is at the air water interface. At the beginning of the stirring, the oil is dragged into the liquid bulk and rotates around the impeller shaft, then is pushed radially into the flow ejected by the impeller. In this region, the flow is turbulent and exhibits velocity gradients that contribute to elongate the oil phase. Viscous thin filaments are generated and expelled from the impeller. Thereafter, the filaments are elongated and break to form drops. This process is repeated in all the oil phase and drops are incorporated into the dispersion. Two main zones can be identified in the tank: the impeller discharge characterized by high turbulence and the rest of the flow where low velocity gradients appear. In this region surface forces dominate the inertial ones, and drops became spheroidal.

11. Geometry of elastic hydrofracturing by injection of an over pressured non-Newtonian Fluid

Abstract

The nucleation and propagation of hydrofractures by injection of over pressured fluids in an elastic and isotropic medium are studied experimentally. Non-Newtonian fluids are injected inside a gelatine whose mechanical properties are assumed isotropic at the experimental strain rates. Linear elastic theory predicts that plastic deformation associated to breakage of gelatin bonds is limited to a small zone ahead of the tip of the propagating fracture and that propagation will be maintained while the fluid pressure exceeds the normal stress to the fracture walls (Ch\'avez-\'Alvarez,2008) (i.e., the minimum compressive stress), resulting in a single mode I fracture geometry. However, we observed the propagation of fractures type II and III as well as nucleation of secondary fractures, with oblique to perpendicular trajectories with respect to the initial fracture. In the Video (http://hdl.handle.net/1813/14122) experimental evidence shows that the fracture shape depends on the viscoelastic properties of gelatine coupled with the strain rate achieved by fracture propagation.

12. Superheated water drops in hot oil

Abstract

Drops of water at room temperature were released in hot oil, which had a temperature higher than that of the boiling point of water. Initially, the drop temperature increases slowly mainly due to heat transfer diffusion; convective heat transfer is small because the motion takes place at a small Reynolds number. Once the drop reaches the bottom of the container, it sticks to the surface with a certain contact angle. Then, a part of the drop vaporizes: the nucleation point may appear at the wall, the interface or the bulk of the drop. The vapor expands inside the drop and deforms its interface. The way in which the vapor expands, either smooth or violent, depends on the location of the nucleation point and oil temperature. Furthermore, for temperatures close to the boiling point of water, the drops are stable (overheated); the vaporization does not occur spontaneously but it may be triggered with an external perturbation. In this case the growth of the vapor bubble is rather violent. Many visualization for different conditions will be shown and predictions of the growth rate will be discussed.

13. Rodless Weissenberg effect

Abstract

The climbing effect of a viscoelastic fluid when stirred by a spinning rod is well documented and known as Weissenberg effect(Wei et al, 2006). This phenomenon is related to the elasticity of the fluid. We have observed that this effect can appear when the fluid is stirred without a rod. In this work, a comparison of the flow around a spinning disk for a Newtonian and a non-Newtonian liquids is presented. The flow is visualized with ink and small bubbles as fluid path tracers. For a Newtonian fluid, at the center of the spinning disk, the fluid velocity is directed towards the disk (sink flow); on the other hand, for a viscoelatic liquid, a source flow is observed since the fluid emerges from the disk. The toroidal vortices that appear on top of the disk rotate in opposite directions for the Newtonian and non-Newtonian cases. Similar observations have been reported for the classical rod climbing flow (Siginer, 1984 and Escudier, 1984). Some authors have suggested that this flow configuration can be used to determine the elastic properties of the liquid (Escuider, 1984 and Joshep, 1973).

14. Surface texture and pulsation due to balloon bursting in different liquids

Abstract

We study the instabilities occurring during the burst of an air balloon in a liquid. These instabilities are typical for the deformation of an interface between two fluids of different densities, similar to fingering in Rayleigh-Taylor instability (see e.g. Sharp, 1984). In the Video a series of bursts are shown for air balloons in different liquids. When the balloon tears it tracks the surface, generating wrinkles and releasing the pressure inside. Apparently, the texture of the surface during the burst becomes smoother as the viscosity increases. During the burst the surface breaks and generates several small bubbles. Furthermore, the pressure inside the balloon is higher than the external pressure before the burst; once the balloon tears the pressure is released and the generated bubbles pulsate several times (see e.g. Brennen, 1995). Such oscillations are more evident for higher internal pressures.

Abstract

Resumen Objetivo: Describir las características clínicas y los resultados operatorios y a siete años del reemplazo valvular aórtico en una cohorte de pacientes mayores de 80 años. Materiales y métodos: Estudio descriptivo retrospectivo de 75 pacientes consecutivos mayores de 80 años, intervenidos de reemplazo valvular aórtico exclusivo entre 2007 y 2019 en el Hospital Guillermo Grant Benavente. Se estudian sus características demográficas, clínicas, ecocardiográficas, riesgo operatorio, cirugías, complicaciones y mortalidad operatoria y supervivencia alejada hasta el 15 de marzo 2021. Resultados: La edad media de la cohorte fue 83,05 ± 2,9 años (rango 80-95) y 43 pacientes eran mujeres (57,3%). La lesión valvular predominante fue la estenosis aórtica (89,3%). 10 pacientes tenían enfermedad coronaria asociada (13,3%) y 2 endocarditis activa. El riesgo de mortalidad operatoria calculado por EuroSCORE aditivo, logístico, II y STS score fue 7,58 ± 1,8; 9,88 ± 6,5%; 3,72 ± 3,5% y 4,27 ± 3,2%, respectivamente. Se utilizó prótesis biológica en 70 (92%) pacientes. Hubo 29 complicaciones operatorias y fallecieron 11 (14,7%) pacientes. El seguimiento promedio fue 7,1 años (rango 2-14), durante el cual fallecen 28 pacientes. La supervivencia a uno, tres y cinco años fue 82, 76, 66 y 48% respectivamente. Conclusiones: La cirugía de reemplazo valvular aórtico en octogenarios en nuestro medio es un procedimiento poco frecuente. La mortalidad observada fue mayor que la estimada por las escalas de riesgo. El reemplazo valvular quirúrgico es una alternativa de tratamiento de la enfermedad de la válvula aórtica en pacientes seleccionados. Se deben evaluar estrategias para mejorar los resultados. Abstract Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics and operative and 7-year results of aortic valve replacement in a cohort of patients older than 80 years. Materials and methods: Retrospective descriptive study of 75 consecutive patients older than 80 years of age who underwent exclusive aortic valve replacement between 2007 and 2019 at the Guillermo Grant Benavente Hospital. Demographic, clinical, echocardiographic characteristics, operative risk, surgeries, complications and operative mortality and long-term survival until March 15, 2021 are studied. Results: The mean age of the cohort was 83.05 ± 2.9 years (range 80-95) and 43 patients were women (57.3%). The predominant valve lesion was aortic stenosis (89.3%). Ten patients had an associated coronary artery disease (13.3%) and 2 had active endocarditis. The risk of operative mortality calculated by EuroSCORE additive, logistic, II and STS score was 7.58 ± 1.8; 9.88 ± 6.5%; 3.72 ± 3.5% and 4.27 ± 3.2%, respectively. A biological prosthesis was used in 70 (92%) patients. There were 31 operative complications and 11 (14.7%) patients died. The mean follow-up was 7.1 years (range 2-14), during which 28 patients died. Survival at 1, 3, and 5 years was 82, 76, 66 and 48%, respectively. Conclusions: Aortic valve replacement surgery in octogenarians in our setting is a rare procedure. The observed mortality was higher than that estimated by the risk scales. Surgical valve replacement is an alternative treatment for aortic valve disease in selected patients. Strategies to improve results should be evaluated.

Conclusions. The monoculture and the shade mesh presented unfavorable humidity and temperature conditions for vanilla, with more periods of water stress. La vainilla se cultiva en agreoecosistemas bajo diversa intensidad de manejo, con características ambientales particulares que podrían ser desfavorables para la orquídea. Las condiciones atmosféricas son importantes, debido al cambio climático. Objetivo. Caracterizar las condiciones climáticas y microclimáticas de tres sistemas productivos de vainilla (Vanilla planifolia Jacks. ex Andrews). Materiales y métodos. El estudio se realizó en tres sistemas productivos de vainilla ubicados en Veracruz y Oaxaca, México. Se utilizaron tres intensidades de manejo: a) acahual, bajo sombra de diversas especies arbóreas; b) monocultivo, intercalado con una especie arbórea y c) malla sombra (con sombra artificial). Se abarcó un año de monitoreo (diciembre-2020 a noviembre-2021), que incluyó cuatro temporadas climáticas, dos frías y dos cálidas. Se midieron variables climáticas (de la región) y microclimáticas (de la parcela): temperatura (T), humedad relativa (HR) y radiación fotosintéticamente activa (RFA, solo en el microclima), con estaciones automatizadas; además se calculó el déficit de presión de vapor (DPV). Resultados. A escala diaria, las condiciones climáticas como microclimáticas en el acahual fueron más favorables para el cultivo de vainilla en las cuatro temporadas evaluadas; el monocultivo y la malla sombra experimentaron condiciones de humedad y temperatura fuera de los requerimientos agroclimáticos de la vainilla, principalmente en marzo-mayo (MAM), con Tmax >32 °C y HR <80 %. A escala horaria, las condiciones más cálidas y secas estuvieron en el monocultivo y la malla sombra en diciembre-febrero (DEF) y MAM; mientras que en junio-agosto (JJA) y septiembre-noviembre (SON) en acahual y malla sombra; el DPV (>2 kPa) indicó periodos más prolongados de estrés hídrico en estos sistemas. Conclusiones. El monocultivo y la malla sombra presentaron condiciones de humedad y temperatura desfavorables para la vainilla, con más periodos de estrés hídrico. El acah

Abstract

The shortage of Personal Support Workers (PSW) to meet the needs of residents in long-term care (LTC) homes has been well documented, and the issue has been made more acute in the context of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The living classroom (LC) has been implemented as one approach to addressing the need to train PSWs and attract them to the sector. A mixed-methods program evaluation of a LC program was undertaken. Surveys were carried out with students during and at the end of the program. Focus groups and individual interviews were carried out with staff, residents, and students. Program implementation was successful, and several program graduates were employed in the LTC home upon graduation. Key stakeholders were satisfied with the program, and students had improved attitudes toward the LTC sector. Opportunities for improvement were noted and addressed. The LC model is an approach that can be used by LTC homes and their educational partners to deliver high quality, integrated PSW programs. It can be used to help address the serious staffing shortages in the LTC sector.

El sonido holofónico es una técnica de reproducción del sonido creada en los años 80’s que recrea la percepción espacial del oído humano, y solo necesita de un par de audífonos para experimentarlo. El contenido del podcast son creepypastas, historias cortas de terror que son compartidas en foros y grupos de internet. Asimismo, el sonido holofónico se ha estado popularizando en internet con el nombre de sonido 8D. En este sentido, el nombre del podcast es Creepypastas 8D. Este se encuentra alojado en YouTube, el segundo buscador más usado en el mundo, y dada la naturaleza audiovisual de esta plataforma, se diseña un apartado visual que acompañe al podcast de forma atractiva. This project is a fiction podcast that takes advantage of the holophonic sound to tell a story in a realistic way with only audio. Holophonic sound is a sound reproduction technique created in the 80s that recreates the spatial perception of the human ear, and you just need a pair of headphones to experience it. The content of the podcast are creepypastas, short horror stories that are shared in forums and internet groups. Also, the holophonic sound has become popular on the internet under the name “8D sound”. In this sense, the name of the podcast is Creepypastas 8D. This is hosted on YouTube, the second most used search engine in the world, and because of the audiovisual nature of this platform, visuals are designed to work with the podcast in an attractive way.

Abstract

The impact of flask geometry on Streptomyces lividans growth and morphology, production and O-mannosylation of a recombinant O-glycoprotein (APA from Mycobacterium tuberculosis) was described and associated to the evolution of the volumetric power input (P/V) in three shake flask geometries. During the exponential growth, the highest P/V was found in baffled flasks (BF) with 0.51kW/m3, followed by coiled flasks (CF) with 0.44kW/m3 and normal Erlenmeyer flasks (NF) with 0.20kW/m3 (flasks volume of 250mL, filling with 50mL and agitated at 150rpm). During the stationary phase, P/V decreased 20% in BF and CF, but increased two times in NF, surely due to changes in mycelial morphology and its effects on rheology. Also, NF cultures were carried out at a filling volume and agitation of 15mL, 150rpm (15mL-NF), and 25mL, 168rpm (25mL-NF), in order to raise P/V closely to the values obtained in CF. However, different growth, morphology and recombinant protein productivity were obtained. These data indicate that P/V is not a definitive parameter that can determine bacteria growth and morphology, not even glycoprotein production. But it can be proposed that the oxygen transfer in the center of the pellets and hydromechanical stress might be the more relevant parameters than P/V. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
