Abstract

Dust particles in space may appear as clusters of individual grains. The morphology of these clusters could be of a fractal or more compact nature. To investigate how the cluster morphology influences the calculated extinction of different clusters in the wavelength range 0.1 - 100 micron, we have preformed extinction calculations of three-dimensional clusters consisting of identical touching spherical particles arranged in three different geometries: prefractal, simple cubic and face-centered cubic. In our calculations we find that the extinction of prefractal and compact clusters are of the same order of magnitude. For the calculations, we have performed an in-depth comparison of the theoretical predictions of extinction coefficients of multi-sphere clusters derived by rigorous solutions, on the one hand, and popular discrete-dipole approximations, on the other. This comparison is essential if one is to assess the degree of reliability of model calculations made with the discrete-dipole approximations, which appear in the literature quite frequently without an adequate accounting of their validity., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, invited paper in Astrophysics of Dust, (eds.) In this paper we study the light scattering by compact and fractal polycrystalline graphitic clusters consisting of touching identical spheres. We compare three general methods for computing the extinction of the clusters in the wavelength range 0.1 - 100 micron, namely, a rigorous solution (Gerardy & Ausloos 1982) and two different discrete-dipole approximation methods -- MarCODES (Markel 1998) and DDSCAT (Draine & Flatau 1994). We consider clusters of N = 4, 7, 8, 27,32, 49, 108 and 343 particles of radii either 10 nm or 50 nm, arranged in three different geometries: open fractal (dimension D = 1.77), simple cubic and face-centred cubic. The rigorous solution shows that the extinction of the fractal clusters, with N < 50 and particle radii 10 nm, displays a peak within 2% of the location of the observed interstellar extinction peak at ~4.6 inverse micron; the smaller the cluster, the closer its peak gets to this value. By contrast, the peak in the extinction of the more compact clusters lie more than 4% from 4.6 inverse micron. At short wavelengths (0.1 - 0.5 micron), all the methods show that fractal clusters have markedly different extinction from those of non-fractal clusters. At wavelengths > 5 micron, the rigorous solution indicates that the extinction from fractal and compact clusters are of the same order of magnitude. It was only possible to compute fully converged results of the rigorous solution for the smaller clusters, due to computational limitations, however, we find that both discrete-dipole approximation methods overestimate the computed extinction of the smaller fractal clusters., Comment: Corrections added in accordance with suggestions by the referee. 12 pages, 12 figures. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), which were previously used as a diagnostic and drug delivery tool, have now been explored as a possible therapy against neoplasms. However, although the toxicity profile of nanotubes is dependent on the physicochemical characteristics of specific particles, there are no studies exploring how the effectivity of the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is affected by different methods of production. In this study, we characterize the structure and biocompatibility of four different types of MWCNTs in rat astrocytes and in RG2 glioma cells as well as the induction of cell lysis and possible additive effect of the combination of MWCNTs with temozolomide. We used undoped MWCNTs (labeled simply as MWCNTs) and nitrogen-doped MWCNTs (labeled as N-MWCNTs). The average diameter of both pristine MWCNTs and pristine N-MWCNTs was ~22 and ~35 nm, respectively. In vitro and in vivo results suggested that these CNTs can be used as adjuvant therapy along with the standard treatment to increase the survival of rats implanted with malignant glioma. Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) engineered cardiovascular tissues have shown great promise to replace damaged structures. Specifically, tissue engineering vascular grafts (TEVG) have the potential to replace biological and synthetic grafts. We aimed to design an in-vitro patient-specific patch based on a hybrid 3D print combined with vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) differentiation. Based on the medical images of a 2 months-old girl with aortic arch hypoplasia and using computational modelling, we evaluated the most hemodynamically efficient aortic patch surgical repair. Using the designed 3D patch geometry, the scaffold was printed using a hybrid fused deposition modelling (FDM) and electrospinning techniques. The scaffold was seeded with multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) for later maturation to derived VSMC (dVSMC). The graft showed adequate resistance to physiological aortic pressure (burst pressure 101 ?± ?15 ?mmHg) and a porosity gradient ranging from 80 to 10 ?µm allowing cells to infiltrate through the entire thickness of the patch. The bio-scaffolds showed good cell viability at days 4 and 12 and adequate functional vasoactive response to endothelin-1. In summary, we have shown that our method of generating patient-specific patch shows adequate hemodynamic profile, mechanical properties, dVSMC infiltration, viability and functionality. This innovative 3D biotechnology has the potential for broad application in regenerative medicine and potentially in heart disease prevention.

Abstract

White maize (Zea mays L.) is preferred for human consumption, but little is known about the genetic regulation of flour quality, and the potential value of genotypes adapted to temperate areas has not been reported. The objectives of this work were to assess the potential value of flint white maize inbreds from northwestern Spain and to determine the genetic effects of quality. A diallel among flint and dent white inbred lines was evaluated in northwestern Spain, and generation mean analyses were performed for three crosses representing flint by flint, dent by dent, and flint by dent combinations. Dent x dent hybrids had Iow density. Considering grain yield and density together, the best hybrids were EP64 x K301, EP71 x K301, and EC22 x Mo20W, which had poor milling test values, and high proportions of whole kernels. Considering the relative importance of nonadditive genetic effects, the final goal of breeding programs should be to obtain hybrids. Both additive and nonadditive genetic effects have to be otaken into account to improve any of these traits in the flint genetic background. Moreover, it will be difficult to improve kernel density and proportion of whole kernels in any genetic background.

Abstract

Ventricular-vascular interaction is central in the adaptation to cardiovascular disease. However, cardiomyopathy patients are predominantly monitored using cardiac biomarkers. The aim of this study is therefore to explore aortic function in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Fourteen idiopathic DCM patients and 16 controls underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, with aortic relative pressure derived using physics-based image processing and a virtual cohort utilized to assess the impact of cardiovascular properties on aortic behaviour. Subjects with reduced left ventricular systolic function had significantly reduced aortic relative pressure, increased aortic stiffness, and significantly delayed time-to-pressure peak duration. From the virtual cohort, aortic stiffness and aortic volumetric size were identified as key determinants of aortic relative pressure. As such, this study shows how advanced flow imaging and aortic hemodynamic evaluation could provide novel insights into the manifestation of DCM, with signs of both altered aortic structure and function derived in DCM using our proposed imaging protocol.
