Abstract Background Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) (family Geminiviridae, genus Begomovirus) is a significant threat to cucumber (Cucumis sativus) production in many regions. Previous studies have reported the genetic mapping of loci related to ToLCNDV resistance, but no resistance genes have been identified. Results We conducted map-based cloning of the ToLCNDV resistance gene in cucumber accession No.44. Agroinfiltration and graft-inoculation analyses confirmed the resistance of No.44 to ToLCNDV isolates from the Mediterranean and Asian countries. Initial mapping involving two rounds of phenotyping with two independent F2 populations generated by crossing the begomovirus-susceptible cultivar SHF and No.44 consistently detected major quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on chromosomes 1 and 2 that confer resistance to ToLCNDV. Fine-mapping of Cy-1, the dominant QTL on chromosome 1, using F3 populations narrowed the candidate region to a 209-kb genomic segment harboring 24 predicted genes. Among these genes, DFDGD-class RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (CsRDR3), an ortholog of Ty-1/Ty-3 of tomato and Pepy-2 of capsicum, was found to be a strong candidate conferring ToLCNDV resistance. The CsRDR3 sequence of No.44 contained multiple amino acid substitutions; the promoter region of CsRDR3 in No.44 had a large deletion; and the CsRDR3 transcript levels were greater in No.44 than in SHF. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) of CsRDR3 using two chromosome segment substitution lines harboring chromosome 1 segments derived from No.44 compromised resistance to ToLCNDV. Conclusions Forward and reverse genetic approaches identified CsRDR3, which encodes a DFDGD-class RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, as the gene responsible for ToLCNDV resistance at the major QTL Cy-1 on chromosome 1 in cucumber. Marker-assisted breeding of ToLCNDV resistance in cucumber will be expedited by using No.44 and the DNA markers developed in this study.

Abstract Hand gesture recognition based on sparse multichannel surface electromyography (sEMG) still poses a significant challenge to deployment as a muscle–computer interface. Many researchers have been working to develop an sEMG-based hand gesture recognition system. However, the existing system still faces challenges in achieving satisfactory performance due to ineffective feature enhancement, so the prediction is erratic and unstable. To comprehensively tackle these challenges, we introduce a novel approach: a lightweight sEMG-based hand gesture recognition system using a 4-stream deep learning architecture. Each stream strategically combines Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN)-based time-varying features with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based frame-wise features. In the first stream, we harness the power of the TCN module to extract nuanced time-varying temporal features. The second stream integrates a hybrid Long short-term memory (LSTM)-TCN module. This stream extracts temporal features using LSTM and seamlessly enhances them with TCN to effectively capture intricate long-range temporal relations. The third stream adopts a spatio-temporal strategy, merging the CNN and TCN modules. This integration facilitates concurrent comprehension of both spatial and temporal features, enriching the model’s understanding of the underlying dynamics of the data. The fourth stream uses a skip connection mechanism to alleviate potential problems of data loss, ensuring a robust information flow throughout the network and concatenating the 4 stream features, yielding a comprehensive and effective final feature representation. We employ a channel attention-based feature selection module to select the most effective features, aiming to reduce the computational complexity and feed them into the classification module. The proposed model achieves an average accuracy of 94.31% and 98.96% on the Ninapro DB1 and DB9 datasets, respectively. This high-performance accuracy proves the superiority of the proposed model, and its implications extend to enhancing the quality of life for individuals using prosthetic limbs and advancing control systems in the field of robotic human–machine interfaces.

Abstract In recent years, immunotherapy has become a standard cancer therapy, joining surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. This therapeutic approach involves the use of patient-derived antigen-specific T cells or genetically modified T cells engineered with chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) or T cell receptors (TCR) that specifically target cancer antigens. However, T cells require ex vivo stimulation for proliferation when used in therapy, and the resulting “exhaustion,” which is characterized by a diminished proliferation capacity and anti-tumor activity, poses a significant challenge. As a solution, we reported “rejuvenated” CD8 + T cells that possess high proliferation capacity from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in 2013. This review discusses the status and future developments in immunotherapy using iPSC-derived T cells, drawing insights from our research to overcome the exhaustion associated with antigen-specific T cell therapy.

Abstract Periodically driven systems provide a novel route to control the topology of quantum materials. In particular, Floquet theory allows an effective band description of periodically-driven systems through the Floquet Hamiltonian. Here, we study the time evolution of d-wave superconductors irradiated with intense circularly-polarized laser light. We consider the Floquet t–J model with time-periodic interactions, and investigate its mean-field dynamics by formulating the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. We observe the development of the i d x y -wave pairing amplitude along with the original $${d}_{{x}^{2}-{y}^{2}}$$ d x 2 − y 2 -wave order upon gradual increasing of the field amplitude. We further numerically construct the Floquet Hamiltonian for the steady state, with which we identify the system as the fully-gapped d + i d superconducting phase with a nonzero Chern number. We explore the low-frequency regime where the perturbative approaches in the previous studies break down, and find that the topological gap of an experimentally-accessible size can be achieved at much lower laser intensities.

Abstract We present a novel automatic preprocessing and ensemble learning technique for the segmentation of low-quality cell images. Capturing cells subjected to intense light is challenging due to their vulnerability to light-induced cell death. Consequently, microscopic cell images tend to be of low quality and it causes low accuracy for semantic segmentation. This problem can not be satisfactorily solved by classical image preprocessing methods. Therefore, we propose a novel approach of automatic enhancement preprocessing (AEP), which translates an input image into images that are easy to recognize by deep learning. AEP is composed of two deep neural networks, and the penultimate feature maps of the first network are employed as filters to translate an input image with low quality into images that are easily classified by deep learning. Additionally, we propose an automatic weighted ensemble learning (AWEL), which combines the multiple segmentation results. Since the second network predicts segmentation results corresponding to each translated input image, multiple segmentation results can be aggregated by automatically determining suitable weights. Experiments on two types of cell image segmentation confirmed that AEP can translate low-quality cell images into images that are easy to segment and that segmentation accuracy improves using AWEL.

Both sexes of a new monotypic genus of Tisbidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) are described from the epi- or mesopelagic zone in the Kuroshio region, Japan. Gyorome guttatum gen. et sp. nov. belongs to a monophyletic lineage of deepwater holoplanktonic genera defined by a suite of characters. Within this clade, Gyorome gen. nov. appears most closely related to Neotisbella Boxshall, 1979. The most distinguishable feature of G. guttatum gen. et sp. nov. is the presence of large, paired, frontal modified eyes, each consisting of a baculiform ocellus, a globular (Gicklhorn’s?) organ, and a semi-parabolic plate. The taxonomic position of Tisbe spinulosa Bradford & Wells, 1983 is discussed and a key to the six meso- and bathypelagic tisbid species is provided. Confusion surrounding earlier literature reports of supernumerary elements on the caudal ramus in some harpacticoid taxa is clarified. Secondary modifications of ocellar components of the typical naupliar eye in the Harpacticoida are reviewed. It is suggested that the development of specialized eyes in G. guttatum gen. et sp. nov. may provide a means for detecting bioluminescent food particles in oligotrophic pelagic environments. The large, vaulted prosome indicates the species is an opportunistic macrophage that has adopted gorging as a feeding strategy.

With the ongoing spread and functional improvement of hearables, we may soon find ourselves in a society where users are wearing hearables at all times. In a hearable environment of this kind, the constant presentation of aural information to users may impede their ability to hear external noises that require their attention. For example, suppose the constant presentation of information in a particular frequency band causes a reduction in the subjective perception of sound pressure (loudness) of the corresponding frequency band. In such a case, the response to environmental sounds that indicate danger (e.g., the sound of an approaching car or an emergency alarm) may be delayed, leading to potential disaster. In this study, we investigated 1) how the presentation of a sound of a specific frequency through a hearable affects the loudness; and 2) which stimulus sound is most effective for recovering the decrease in loudness. In the first investigation, a loudspeaker presented the sound of a specific frequency that imitates environmental sound, and a hearable gave a stimulus sound of a particular frequency based on the frequency of the loudspeaker sound. The results showed that the loudness decreased by more than 10.0% in all stimulus sounds listened to with hearables, and the amount of the decrease tended to be larger the closer the frequency of the loudspeaker sound was to that of the hearable sound. In the second investigation, we hypothesized that the presence of specific recovery stimulus sounds would be effective in quickly restoring any loudness that had decreased, and the results showed that the amount of recovery was greater for all the recovery stimulus sounds we used compared to when the stimulus sounds were not presented.

Developing strategies for the radiosensitization of cancer cells by the inhibition of genes, which harbor low toxicity to normal cells, will be useful for improving cancer radiotherapy. Here, we focused on a β-site of amyloid precursor protein (APP)-cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1; β-secretase, memapsin-2). By functional inhibition of this peptidase by siRNA, it has also recently been shown that the DNA strand break marker, γH2AX foci, increased, suggesting its involvement in DNA damage response. To investigate this possibility, we knocked down BACE1 with siRNA in cancer cell lines, and sensitization to γ-irradiation was examined by a colony formation assay, γH2AX foci and level analysis, and flow cytometry. BACE1 knockdown resulted in the sensitization of HeLa, MDA-MB-231, U2OS, and SAOS cells to γ-irradiation in a diverse range. BACE1 knockdown showed a weak radiosensitization effect in osteosarcoma U2OS cells, which has a normal p53 function. HeLa and SAOS cells, which harbor p53 dysfunction, exhibited a greater level of radiosensitization. These results suggest that BACE1 may be a potential target for the radiosensitization in particular cancer cells.

Abstract Although novel techniques for avoiding incontinence during robot-assisted radical prostatectomy have been developed, long-term oncological outcomes are unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the long-term oncological outcomes and functional outcomes of novel nerve-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy with endopelvic fascia preservation for a single surgeon. Data from 100 patients who underwent structure-preserving prostatectomies performed by a single surgeon were retrospectively analyzed. The median console time was 123 min. Bilateral nerve-sparing was performed in 43% of patients underwent, and 57% underwent unilateral nerve-sparing surgery. Most patients (96%) reached complete pad-zero urinary continence by one year after surgery. Satisfactory erectile function was achieved in 97% of patients who underwent bilateral nerve-sparing surgery, and 80% of patients who underwent unilateral nerve-sparing surgery. The surgical margin was positive for 25% of patients, and the biochemical recurrence-free rate at 5 years was 77%. The cancer-specific survival rate was 100% during the median follow-up period of 4.5 years. Clavien-Dindo grade III complications occurred in 1% of cases. The outcomes for novel nerve-sparing robot-assisted radical prostatectomy with endopelvic fascia preservation were similar to previously reported oncological outcomes, with satisfactory functional outcomes. This operative method may be useful for patients who are eligible for nerve-sparing surgery.

Abstract War is an extreme form of collective human behaviour characterized by coordinated violence. We show that this nature of war is substantiated in the temporal patterns of conflict occurrence that obey power law. The focal metric is the interconflict interval (ICI), the interval between the end of a conflict in a dyad (i.e. a pair of states) and the start of the subsequent conflict in the same dyad. Using elaborate statistical tests, we confirmed that ICI samples compiled from the history of interstate conflicts from 1816 to 2014 followed a power-law distribution. We then demonstrate that the power-law properties of ICIs can be explained by a hypothetical model assuming an information-theoretic formulation of the Clausewitz thesis on war: the use of force is a means of interstate communication. Our findings help us to understand the nature of wars between regular states, the significance of which has increased since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The efficiency enhancement of the tin perovskite solar cell consisting of ASnI2Br (ASnI2Br-PVK-PV) is discussed. The ASnI2Br-PVK-PV has a bandgap wider than 1.6 eV and is applicable to the top layer of Pb free perovskite/Si tandem solar cells. The low efficiency of the ASnI2Br-PVK-PV is due to the presence of Sn4+ and defects at the hetero interfaces. We found that PhSiH3 solution treatment (passivation) of the film surface decreases the Sn4+ concentrated on the surface of the perovskite film. At the same time, PhSiH3 treatment (passivation) made the surface of the perovskite layer hydrophobic, resulting in giving better contacts between the perovskite layer and the hydrophobic C60 layer. The efficiency was enhanced from 3.65% to 5.50% after the passivation, proving the effectiveness of the PhSiH3 treatment. The mechanism of the passivation is discussed.

Sonic-IR, which detects defects based on the temperature rise due to frictional heating at the defect faces under ultrasonic excitation, has an advantage in the detection of closed defects. However, in the conventional sonic-IR method, an acoustic energy is directly input from an ultrasonic transducer to the test object via an ultrasonic horn, which may give some scratches and deformation to the test object. To avoid such a problem, we have developed a new sonic-IR method using an ultrasonic wave input via water, and the practicability of the proposed method for the detection of fatigue crack has been experimentally demonstrated. This study presents the results of an investigation of the effect of immersion conditions on heat generation at defects in the proposed method.

Abstract Background Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) due to renal allograft biopsy is mechanical trauma resulting from the penetration of small arteries and veins by a core needle. Most AVFs are reported to resolve asymptomatically and spontaneously. This report presents a patient with acute kidney injury (AKI) due to urinary tract obstruction caused by a bleeding AVF in a renal allograft. Case presentation A 22-year-old Japanese woman who underwent living-donor kidney transplantation (KT) at 3 years due to end-stage renal disease caused by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) presented with a renal transplant AVF (gourd-shaped; 42 × 19 × 20 mm). The AVF was unexpectedly discovered by ultrasound before a surveillance biopsy at 10 years after KT. The patient had a history of recurrent FSGS, had undergone several renal allograft biopsies after KT, and did not experience symptoms or growth of the AVF for years. Nineteen years after KT, the patient developed AKI with sudden, asymptomatic, gross hematuria and anuria. Plain computed tomography revealed a hematoma in the pelvis of the renal allograft and bladder tamponade. The AVF was successfully treated by coil embolization. Hemodialysis was performed for AKI, and graft function was gradually recovered. Conclusions Unexpected bleeding from a renal transplant AVF may lead to transplant dysfunction. Angiographic embolization against the ruptured renal transplant AVF may prevent rebleeding and rescue the renal allograft.

To identify a biomarker for the early diagnosis of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV), we investigated the expression of a microRNA, bta-miR-375, in cattle serum. Using quantitative reverse-transcriptase PCR analysis, we measured bta-miR-375 levels in 27 samples from cattle with EBL (EBL cattle), 45 samples from animals infected with BLV but showing no clinical signs (NS cattle), and 30 samples from cattle uninfected with BLV (BLV negative cattle). In this study, we also compared the kinetics of bta-miR-375 with those of the conventional biomarkers of proviral load (PVL), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and thymidine kinase (TK) from the no-clinical-sign phase until EBL onset in three BLV-infected Japanese black (JB) cattle. Bta-miR-375 expression was higher in NS cattle than in BLV negative cattle (P < 0.05) and greater in EBL cattle than in BLV negative and NS cattle (P < 0.0001 for both comparisons). Receiver operating characteristic curves demonstrated that bta-miR-375 levels distinguished EBL cattle from NS cattle with high sensitivity and specificity. In NS cattle, bta-miR-375 expression was increased as early as at 2 months before EBL onset-earlier than the expression of PVL, TK, or LDH isoenzymes 2 and 3. These results suggest that serum miR-375 is a promising biomarker for the early diagnosis of EBL.

This study aimed to investigate whether quadriceps muscle thickness (QMT) is useful for nutritional assessment in patients with stroke. This was a retrospective cohort study. Nutritional risk was assessed using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), with GNRI < 92 indicating a risk of malnutrition and GNRI ≥ 92 indicating normal conditions. Muscle mass was assessed using QMT and calf circumference (CC). The outcome was Functional Independence Measure (FIM) effectiveness. The cutoff values of QMT and CC for discriminating between high and low GNRI were determined using the receiver operating characteristic curve. The accuracy of the nutritional risk discrimination model was evaluated using the Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC). Multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between nutritional risk, as defined by QMT and CC, and FIM effectiveness. A total of 113 patients were included in the analysis. The cutoff values of QMT and CC for determining nutritional risk were 49.630 mm and 32.0 cm for men (MCC: 0.576; 0.553) and 41.185 mm and 31.0 cm for women (MCC: 0.611; 0.530). Multiple regression analysis showed that only nutritional risk defined by QMT was associated with FIM effectiveness. These findings indicate that QMT is valid for assessing nutritional risk in patients with stroke.

Nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) on the nuclear membrane surface have a crucial function in controlling the movement of small molecules and macromolecules between the cell nucleus and cytoplasm through their intricate core channel resembling a spiderweb with several layers. Currently, there are few methods available to accurately measure the dynamics of nuclear pores on the nuclear membranes at the nanoscale. The limitation of traditional optical imaging is due to diffraction, which prevents achieving the required resolution for observing a diverse array of organelles and proteins within cells. Super-resolution techniques have effectively addressed this constraint by enabling the observation of subcellular components on the nanoscale. Nevertheless, it is crucial to acknowledge that these methods often need the use of fixed samples. This also raises the question of how closely a static image represents the real intracellular dynamic system. High-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) is a unique technique used in the field of dynamic structural biology, enabling the study of individual molecules in motion close to their native states. Establishing a reliable and repeatable technique for imaging mammalian tissue at the nanoscale using HS-AFM remains challenging due to inadequate sample preparation. This study presents the rapid strainer microfiltration (RSM) protocol for directly preparing high-quality nuclei from the mouse brain. Subsequently, we promptly utilize HS-AFM real-time imaging and cinematography approaches to record the spatiotemporal of nuclear pore nano-dynamics from the mouse brain.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) for children is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders and its prevalence has increased globally. Children with ADHD are faced with various difficulties, including inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Therefore, it is important to use an early detection system that is simple, non-invasive, and automated. Children with ADHD also suffer from other coexisting one or more disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), etc and it creates more challenges to detect ADHD children. Very few researchers considered such kinds of these comorbidities in their studies to detect ADHD for children. In this work, we proposed a deep learning (DL)-based algorithm to identify ADHD children with coexisting ASD. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRs) signals from thirteen ADHD children who have coexisting ASD and fifteen typically developing (TD) children were recorded during the drawing of handwriting patterns. We asked each child to draw periodic lines (PL) and zigzag lines (ZL) under the predict and trace condition and repeated them three times. Finally, a hybrid approach was designed by combining convolutional neural networks (CNN) and bidirectional long short-time memory (Bi-LSTM) to determine children with ADHD who have ASD. The experimental results showed that our proposed hybrid approach could determine ADHD children with coexisting ASD with a classification accuracy of 94.0%, a sensitivity of 89.7%, specificity of 97.8%, f1-score of 93.3%, and AUC of 0.938, respectively, for the PL predict task.

Abstract This study presents a novel framework for classifying and visualizing pneumonia induced by COVID-19 from CT images. Although many image classification methods using deep learning have been proposed, in the case of medical image fields, standard classification methods are unable to be used in some cases because the medical images that belong to the same category vary depending on the progression of the symptoms and the size of the inflamed area. In addition, it is essential that the models used be transparent and explainable, allowing health care providers to trust the models and avoid mistakes. In this study, we propose a classification method using contrastive learning and an attention mechanism. Contrastive learning is able to close the distance for images of the same category and generate a better feature space for classification. An attention mechanism is able to emphasize an important area in the image and visualize the location related to classification. Through experiments conducted on two-types of classification using a three-fold cross validation, we confirmed that the classification accuracy was significantly improved; in addition, a detailed visual explanation was achieved comparison with conventional methods.

Bacteria are the dominant particulate matter in livestock houses and can threaten animal and public health. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a crucial concern worldwide, and nationwide measures established based on the One Health approach are being implemented in many countries. This requires multidisciplinary perspectives and collaboration among the human, animal, and environmental sectors. However, information on the AMR risk in livestock house aerosol is limited, especially its association with antimicrobial usage (AMU). Therefore, this study was conducted to reveal the AMR profile of Staphylococcus, the major bacterial genus in the aerosol of the piggeries of Japanese farms, and the association between farm-level AMU and AMR. The investigation at 10 farrow-to-finish pig farms revealed that regardless of the sampling season and the piggery group, the resistance rate of isolated staphylococci for oxacillin, erythromycin, and lincomycin was more than 40% of the median and tended to be higher than that for other antimicrobials. Driving quantum materials into non-equilibrium states using light-matter interactions is a way to induce novel quantum phases not attainable in equilibrium. Here, the authors theoretically demonstrate that circularly-polarised light can alter a d-wave superconductor in a strong-correlation regime into a topological superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry, as a combined effect of light and strong correlation.

This study provides the first comprehensive investigation of the residual concentrations of eight classes of antimicrobial agents (AMs, 20 compounds) in 13 swine wastewater treatment facilities in Japan. These facilities implemented the aerobic activated sludge (AS) or its alternative methods. The maximum concentrations before treatment were found at the level of 7100, 6900, 6000, 3600, 3400, and 1400 µg/L for tilmicosin, oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline, lincomycin , sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim, respectively. The highest detection rate (96.3%) in influents was noted for the morantel, which was a feed additive. The seasonal difference in residual concentration was much greater for tetracyclines (TCs) and macrolides (MLs) when their residual concentrations were high, especially in the cold season. There was a positive correlation between the purchased quantity of TCs and fluoroquinolones (FQs) and their residue levels detected in the effluents (p 99.8% and >92% in the influents and effluents, respectively. This data suggested that it is essential to reduce the amount used and introduce more efficient methods and operating conditions to constantly remove AMs during the treatment to reduce the risk of AM discharge from swine farms.

Summary: The relationships between tissue-resident microglia and early macrophages, especially their lineage segregation outside the yolk sac, have been recently explored, providing a model in which a conversion from macrophages seeds microglia during brain development. However, spatiotemporal evidence to support such microglial seeding in situ and to explain how it occurs has not been obtained. By cell tracking via slice culture, intravital imaging, and Flash tag-mediated or genetic labeling, we find that intraventricular CD206+ macrophages, which are abundantly observed along the inner surface of the mouse cerebral wall, frequently enter the pallium at embryonic day 12. Immunofluorescence of the tracked cells show that postinfiltrative macrophages in the pallium acquire microglial properties while losing the CD206+ macrophage phenotype. We also find that intraventricular macrophages are supplied transepithelially from the roof plate. This study demonstrates that the “roof plate→ventricle→pallium” route is an essential path for microglial colonization into the embryonic mouse brain.

In this study, we experimentally validated the possibility of estimating the angle of departure (AoD) using multiple signal classification (MUSIC) with only WiFi control frames for beamforming feedback (BFF), defined in IEEE 802.11ac/ax. The examined BFF-based MUSIC is a model-driven algorithm that does not require a pre-obtained database. This is in contrast with most existing BFF-based sensing techniques, which are data-driven and require a pre-obtained database. Moreover, BFF-based MUSIC affords an alternative AoD estimation method without requiring access to the channel state information (CSI). Extensive experimental and numerical evaluations demonstrate that BFF-based MUSIC can successfully estimate the AoDs for multiple propagation paths. Moreover, the evaluations performed in this study reveal that BFF-based MUSIC, where BFF is a highly compressed version of CSI in IEEE 802.11ac/ax, achieves an error of AoD estimation that is comparable to that of CSI-based MUSIC.

In the field of WiFi sensing, as an alternative sensing source of the channel state information (CSI) matrix, the use of a beamforming feedback matrix (BFM) that is a right singular matrix of the CSI matrix has attracted significant interest owing to its wide availability regarding the underlying WiFi systems. In the IEEE 802.11ac/ax standard, the station (STA) transmits a BFM to an access point (AP), which uses the BFM for precoded multiple-input and multiple-output communications. In addition, in the same way, the AP transmits a BFM to the STA, and the STA uses the received BFM. Regarding BFM-based sensing, extensive real-world experiments were conducted as part of this study, and two key insights were reported: Firstly, this report identified a potential issue related to accuracy in existing uni-directional BFM-based sensing frameworks that leverage only BFMs transmitted for the AP or STA. Such uni-directionality introduces accuracy concerns when there is a sensing capability gap between the uni-directional BFMs for the AP and STA. Thus, this report experimentally evaluates the sensing ability disparity between the uni-directional BFMs, and shows that the BFMs transmitted for an AP achieve higher sensing accuracy compared to the BFMs transmitted from the STA when the sensing target values are estimated depending on the angle of departure of the AP. Secondly, to complement the sensing gap, this paper proposes a bi-directional sensing framework, which simultaneously leverages the BFMs transmitted from the AP and STA. The experimental evaluations reveal that bi-directional sensing achieves higher accuracy than uni-directional sensing in terms of the human localization task.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) signal is potentially suitable in atrial fibrillation (AF) detection for its convenience in use and similarity in physiological origin to electrocardiogram (ECG). There are a few preceding studies that have shown the possibility of using the peak-to-peak interval of the PPG signal (PPIp) in AF detection. However, as a generalized model, the accuracy of an AF detector should be pursued on the one hand; on the other hand, its generalizability should be paid attention to in view of the individual differences in PPG manifestation of even the same arrhythmia and the existence of sub-types. Moreover, a binary classifier for atrial fibrillation and normal sinus rhythm is not convincing enough for the similarity between AF and ectopic beats. In this study, we project the atrial fibrillation detection as a multiple-class classification and try to propose a training pipeline that is advantageous both to the accuracy and generalizability of the classifier by designing and determining the configurable options of the pipeline, in terms of input format, deep learning model (with hyperparameter optimization), and scheme of transfer learning. With a rigorous comparison of the possible combinations of the configurable components in the pipeline, we confirmed that first-order difference of heartbeat sequence as the input format, a 2-layer CNN–1-layer Transformer hybridR model as the learning model and the whole model fine-tuning as the implementing scheme of transfer learning is the best combination for the pipeline (F1 value: 0.80, overall accuracy: 0.87)R.

Objectives: After confirming the measurement properties of the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) in patients with stroke by conducting a Rasch analysis, this study sought: (i) to generate a keyform as a tool for goal-setting and intervention-planning; and (ii) to determine the appropriate strata for separating patients’ postural balance ability. Design: Methodological analyses of cross-sectional study data. Patients: A pooled sample of 156 patients with stroke: mean (standard deviation) age 74.4 (12.9) years. Methods: This study evaluated the BBS’s rating scale structure, unidimensionality, and measurement accuracy (0: unable to perform or requiring help, to 4: normal performance) and then generated a keyform and strata. Results: The BBS rating scale fulfilled the category functioning criteria. Principal component analysis of standardized residuals confirmed the unidimensionality of the test. All items fit the Rasch analysis. Person ability-item difficulty matching was good. Person reliability was 0.96, and the patients were divided into 9 strata. The keyform for the BBS will enable clinicians and investigators to estimate patients’ postural balance ability and monitor their progress. Conclusion: The BBS has strong measurement properties. This study generated both a keyform that can contribute to clinicians’ decision-making in goalsetting and intervention-planning and strata that can facilitate understanding of patients’ abilities. LAY ABSTRACT People who have had a stroke often have difficulty maintaining postural balance and controlling their posture. The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) measures a person’s ability to maintain postural balance. Several analyses were performed to investigate the measurement properties of the BBS in patients who have had a stroke. Then, a keyform tool was generated and some strata (levels) determined that separate patients according to postural balance ability. A keyform can help therapists to identify items that a patient finds relatively difficult. Use of a keyform can contribute to both rehabilitation goal-setting and planned interventions for patients. The strata can be used to detect and measure changes in a patient’s postural balance ability. The findings of this study demonstrate that the BBS has strong measurement properties and provides an appropriate keyform and 9 strata. Use of these tools can facilitate the rehabilitation of patients with stroke through quantification of a patient’s postural balance ability.

Abstract Serum fatty acids (FAs) exist in the four lipid fractions of triglycerides (TGs), phospholipids (PLs), cholesteryl esters (CEs) and free fatty acids (FFAs). Total fatty acids (TFAs) indicate the sum of FAs in them. In this study, four statistical analysis methods, which are independent component analysis (ICA), factor analysis, common principal component analysis (CPCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), were conducted to uncover food sources of FAs among the four lipid fractions (CE, FFA, and TG + PL). Among the methods, ICA provided the most suggestive results. To distinguish the animal fat intake from endogenous fatty acids, FFA variables in ICA and factor analysis were studied. ICA provided more distinct suggestions of FA food sources (endogenous, plant oil intake, animal fat intake, and fish oil intake) than factor analysis. Moreover, ICA was discovered as a new approach to distinguish animal FAs from endogenous FAs, which will have an impact on epidemiological studies. In addition, the correlation coefficients between a published dataset of food FA compositions and the loading values obtained in the present ICA study suggested specific foods as serum FA sources. In conclusion, we found that ICA is a useful tool to uncover food sources of serum FAs.

A new species of the continental shelf hyperbenthic genus Pilarella is described, the first from the Indo-Pacific. This is the second species of Pilarella known, and the first description of a male in the genus. The new species is easily distinguished from other species of Pilarella (P. longicornis) based on: (1) short caudal rami, approximately 1.5 times longer than wide; (2) 2 setae on the mandibular endopod; (3) 6 setae on the maxillular coxal epipodite; and (4) in the female, a short left antennule reaching the posterior border of the genital double-somite. The new diagnosis of Pilarella differs from Metacalanus in the separation of ancestral segments IX–XII and XIV–XV of the antennule, and the presence of 5–6 setae on the maxillular praecoxal arthrite. Pilarella is also separated from Metacalanalis based on the absence of a seta on the third ancestral segment of the antennary exopod, the symmetry of legs 1–3, the presence of a medial basal seta on the female leg 5, and 2 lateral exopodal spines on the female leg 5. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of some representative genera of the family Arietellidae, including the present new species, recovers two arietellid clades (Metacalanus- and Arietellus-clades) as in previous studies. Dichotomous keys for the genera of Arietellidae and the species of Pilarella are included.

Abstract Herein, we present a novel topic variation detection method that combines a topic extraction method and a change-point detection method. It extracts topics from time-series text data as the feature of each time and detects change points from the changing patterns of the extracted topics. We applied this method to analyze the valuable, albeit underutilized, text dataset containing the Japanese Prime Minister’s (PM’s) detailed daily activities for over 32 years. The proposed method and data provide novel insights into the empirical analyses of political business cycles, which is a classical issue in economics and political science. For instance, as our approach enables us to directly observe and analyze the PM’s actions, it can overcome the empirical challenges encountered by previous research owing to the unobservability of the PM’s behavior. Our empirical observations are primarily consistent with recent theoretical developments regarding this topic. Despite limitations, by employing a completely novel method and dataset, our approach enhances our understanding and provides new insights into this classic issue.

Lattice defect engineering has attracted attention due to its ability to develop thermoelectric materials with low thermal conductivity. For Mg2Si single crystals (SCs), Si vacancy (VSi) defects can be introduced and consequently result in the formation of dislocation cores. These lattice defects confer Mg2Si SCs with a lower thermal conductivity compared to Mg2Si polycrystals. To reveal a mechanism for the stabilisation of VSi in the Mg2Si SCs, we investigated the effects of oxygen (O) on lattice defects by performing electronic structure calculations, secondary ion mass spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoelectron holography. On the basis of these calculations, we predicted that O stabilised the formation of VSi when it was located at the Si site or at an interstitial site. All experiments confirmed the presence of O inside the Mg2Si SCs. However, O was suggested to be located not at the specific site in the crystal lattice of Mg2Si but at dislocation cores. The interaction between O and the dislocation cores in the Mg2Si SC is expected to immobilise dislocation cores, leading to the stabilisation of VSi formation.

Residual stress in crystalline polymers can lead to material failure, but currently methods which can quantify residual stress in such materials are lacking. Here, by using fluorescent-type mechanochromophores, the authors develop a method to visualize and quantify low degrees of stress that arises from micro-mechanical forces during polymer crystallization.

Objectives: The microsurgical approach is considered the most reliable procedure in varicocelectomy. However, as there are difficulties in identifying the spermatic artery at the peripheral level, we had introduced intraoperative indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) for identification of arteries. In this study, we further investigated the usefulness of intraoperative ICGA in combination with an ordinary Doppler detector in microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy. Methods: A total of 140 men who underwent microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy at Gunma University Hospital were included. An operating microscope equipped with a near-infrared charge-coupled device was used for intraoperative ICGA. After exposing the vessels, arteries were identified using endoscopic vision only or with assistance of Doppler detector or ICGA, or of both. The number of preserved arteries was compared among the groups. Results: ICGA clearly visualized the internal spermatic arteries in all cases, allowing the surgeon to perform real-time identification and isolation of the spermatic artery intraoperatively. Sanita-kun™ CC (coliform count) and EC ( Escherichia coli/coliform count), sheet quantitative culture systems which can avoid chromogenic interference by lactase in food, were evaluated in comparison with conventional methods for these bacteria. Based on the results of inclusivity and exclusivity studies using 77 micro-organisms, sensitivity and specificity of both Sanita-kun™ met the criteria for ISO 16140. Both media were compared with deoxycholate agar, violet red bile agar, Merck Chromocult™ coliform agar (CCA), 3M Petrifilm™ CC and EC (PEC) and 3-tube MPN, as reference methods, in 100 naturally contaminated food samples. The correlation coefficients of both Sanita-kun™ for coliform detection were more than 0·95 for all comparisons. For E. coli detection, Sanita-kun™ EC was compared with CCA, PEC and MPN in 100 artificially contaminated food samples. The correlation coefficients for E. coli detection of Sanita-kun™ EC were more than 0·95 for all comparisons. There were no significant differences in all comparisons when conducting a one-way analysis of variance ( anova). Both Sanita-kun™ significantly inhibited colour interference by lactase when inhibition of enzymatic staining was assessed using 40 natural cheese samples spiked with coliform. Our results demonstrated Sanita-kun™ CC and EC are suitable alternatives for the enumeration of coliforms and E. coli/coliforms, respectively, in a variety of foods, and specifically in fermented foods. Significance and Impact of the Study Current chromogenic media for coliforms and Escherichia coli/coliforms have enzymatic coloration due to breaking down of chromogenic substrates by food lactase. The novel sheet culture media which have film layer to avoid coloration by food lactase have been developed for enumeration of coliforms and E. coli/coliforms respectively. In this study, we demonstrated these media had comparable performance with reference methods and less interference by food lactase. These media have a possibility not only to be useful alternatives but also to contribute for accurate enumeration of these bacteria in a variety of foods, and specifically in fermented foods. The crystal structure of the spin dimer magnet NaCu2VP2O10 was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction. NaCu2VP2O10 displayed a non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic C2221 structure with a = 6.13860 (10) Å, b = 14.4846 (3) Å and c = 8.2392 (2) Å. The layered structure comprised CuO4 plaquettes, VO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra. A pair of CuO4 plaquettes formed Cu2O6 structural dimers through edge sharing. The Cu–Cu network formed a distorted puckered-layer structure with pseudo-one-dimensional characteristics. Maximum magnetic susceptibility was observed at ∼60 K and NaCu2VP2O10 became non-magnetic upon further cooling. The spin gap between the spin-singlet non-magnetic ground state and triplet excited state was estimated to be 43.4 K. Thus, NaCu2VP2O10 was assumed to be an alternating chain system with a singlet ground state of dimer origin. The V5+ ions in the VO6 octahedra showed large off-centre displacements along the [110] direction in the primitive perovskite structure, which were attributed to the pseudo-Jahn–Teller distortion of d0 transition metals.

A new genus and species of calanoid copepods belonging to the group of Bradfordian families, Pogonura rugosa gen. et sp. nov., is described from the deep-sea hyperbenthic layers off Nagannu Island, Okinawa Prefecture, southwestern Japan. Pogonura gen. nov. is similar to another Bradfordian genus Procenognatha in sharing the following characteristics: (1) segmentation of the antennule, fused segments II–IV, X–XI, XXVII–XXVIII in females and II–IV, X–XII, XXVII–XXVIII, right XXII–XXIII in males; (2) retained setae on the ancestral segments I–IV of the antennary exopod; (3) setules on the mandibular gnathobase; (4) 3 sclerotized setae on the maxillary endopod; (5) absence of sensory seta on the maxilliped; (6) large spinules on the posterior surface of the rami of legs 2 and 3; and (7) setation and segmentation of female leg 5. Pogonura gen. nov. is distinctly distinguished from Procenognatha by the following features: (1) reduction of a seta on the ancestral segment IX of the antennary exopod, (2) 8 setae (7 in Procenognatha) on the maxillular exopod, (3) 5 brush-like setae (6 in Procenognatha) on the maxillary endopod, and (4) reduction of right endopod of male leg 5. The systematic position of Pogonura gen. nov. in the Bradfordian families is also discussed. Although this new genus shares synapomorphies with some diaixid genera, an assignment of this genus to any Bradfordian family should be pending until the taxonomy of this family group is clearly settled.

Abstract Background Decompression sickness (DCS) induced by extravascular and intravascular gas bubbles during decompression can present with varying manifestations, such as joint pain, numbness, cutaneous symptoms, and cardiopulmonary dysfunction. However, mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT) is a rare complication of DCS. To the best of our knowledge, only a few cases have been reported, and surgical cases of MVT secondary to DCS have not yet been reported. Case presentation A 59-year-old man who was a fisherman and recreational diver dived to a depth of 100 feet. After diving, he noted abdominal and postcervical pain and visited a community hospital. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a large amount of intravenous gas, so he was diagnosed with DCS. He was then transferred to a previous hospital, where hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) was performed. HBOT reduced the amount of venous gas, but his abdominal pain worsened, so he was transferred to our hospital. CT showed pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Because of the possibility of intestinal necrosis, a laparoscopic examination was performed, which revealed necrosis of the transverse colon. We therefore performed a transverse colon resection. He was discharged 36 days after the surgery and followed an uneventful postoperative course. Conclusions DCS is likely to cause MVT. If intestinal necrosis is suspected, a laparoscopic examination may be useful for determining the diagnosis and treatment. MVT should be included as a differential diagnosis of abdominal pain that persists after HBOT.

Abstract Background Enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) is a disease of cattle caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV). More than 60% of BLV-infected cattle remain subclinical and are thus referred to as aleukemic (AL) cattle. Approximately 30% of infected cattle show a relatively stable increase in the number of B lymphocytes; these cattle are termed persistent lymphocytosis (PL) cattle. A small percentage of infected cattle develop BLV-induced B cell lymphoma (EBL) and are called EBL cattle. Due to the increase in the number of BLV-infected cattle, the number of EBL cattle has featured a corresponding increase over recent years in Japan. Several diagnostic criteria for EBL (e.g., enlarged superficial lymph nodes, protrusion of the eye, increased peripheral blood lymphocyte, etc.) are used for on-farm diagnosis and antemortem tests at slaughterhouses. Since the slaughter of EBL cattle for human consumption is not allowed, on-farm detection of EBL cattle is important for reducing the economic loss incurred by farms. Therefore, establishing new diagnostic markers to improve the efficiency and accuracy of the antemortem detection of EBL cattle is a critical, unmet need. To simultaneously evaluate the utility of candidate markers, this study measured the values of each marker using the blood samples of 687 cattle with various clinical statuses of BLV infection (EBL, PL, AL and non-infected cattle). Results Sensitivity (Se) and specificity (Sp) were highest for the serum thymidine kinase (TK) followed by the serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isozyme 2. The number of peripheral blood lymphocytes and proviral load in peripheral blood had the lowest Se and Sp. The values of all markers other than TK were influenced by the sex of the tested cattle. Conclusions Although tLDH and its isozymes (LDHs) may be influenced by the sex of the tested cattle, the high accuracy of TK and LDH2 as well as accessibility and simplicity of the protocol used to measure these enzymes recommend the utility of TK and LDHs for EBL cattle detection. Using these markers for screening followed by the application of existing diagnostic criteria may improve the efficiency and accuracy of EBL cattle detection on farms, thereby contributing to the reduction of economic losses in farms.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is an oncogenic virus belonging to the genus Deltaretrovirus and is the causative agent of enzootic bovine leukosis. Proviral load (PVL) determined by real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) is now widely used as an indicator of not only BLV infection, but also BLV disease progression. To interpret PVLs determined by different qPCRs used in Japan, we compared a chimeric cycling probe-based qPCR, CY415, targeting the BLV tax region; a TaqMan probe-based qPCR, RC202, targeting the BLV pol region; and a TaqMan probe-based qPCR, CoCoMo, targeting the BLV long terminal repeat (LTR) region. Whole-blood samples collected from 317 naturally BLV-infected cattle (165 Holstein–Friesian and 152 Japanese Black) and tumor tissue samples collected from 32 cattle at a meat inspection center were used. The PVLs determined by each qPCR were strongly correlated. However, the PVL and the proportion of BLV-infected cells determined by RC202 or CoCoMo were significantly higher than those determined by CY415. Genetic analysis of three tumor tissue samples revealed that LTR region mutations or a deletion affected the PVL determined by CoCoMo. These results suggest that the TaqMan-based RC202 or CoCoMo qPCR is better than CY415 for BLV PVL analysis. However, qPCR target region mutations were not rare in tumors and could hamper PVL analysis by using qPCR.

The radiosensitization of tumor cells is one of the promising approaches for enhancing radiation damage to cancer cells and limiting radiation effects on normal tissue. In this study, we performed a comprehensive screening of radiosensitization targets in human lung cancer cell line A549 using an shRNA library and identified apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme catalytic subunit 3G (APOBEC3G: A3G) as a candidate target. APOBEC3G is an innate restriction factor that inhibits HIV-1 infection as a cytidine deaminase. APOBEC3G knockdown with siRNA showed an increased radiosensitivity in several cancer cell lines, including pancreatic cancer MIAPaCa2 cells and lung cancer A549 cells. Cell cycle analysis revealed that APOBEC3G knockdown increased S-phase arrest in MIAPaCa2 and G2/M arrest in A549 cells after γ-irradiation. DNA double-strand break marker γH2AX level was increased in APOBEC3G-knocked-down MIAPaCa2 cells after γ-irradiation. Using a xenograft model of A549 in mice, enhanced radiosensitivity by a combination of X-ray irradiation and APOBEC3G knockdown was observed. These results suggest that the functional inhibition of APOBEC3G sensitizes cancer cells to radiation by attenuating the activation of the DNA repair pathway, suggesting that APOBEC3G could be useful as a target for the radiosensitization of cancer therapy.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is the causative agent of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL), a malignant B cell lymphoma. However, the mechanisms of BLV-associated lymphomagenesis remain poorly understood. Here, after deep sequencing, we performed comparative analyses of B cell microRNAs (miRNAs) in cattle infected with BLV and those without BLV. In BLV-infected cattle, BLV-derived miRNAs (blv-miRNAs) accounted for 38% of all miRNAs in B cells. Four of these blv-miRNAs (blv-miR-B1-5p, blv-miR-B2-5p, blv-miR-B4-3p, and blv-miR-B5-5p) had highly significant positive correlations with BLV proviral load (PVL). The read counts of 90 host-derived miRNAs (bta-miRNAs) were significantly down-regulated in BLV-infected cattle compared to those in uninfected cattle. Only bta-miR-375 had a positive correlation with PVL in BLV-infected cattle and was highly expressed in the B cell lymphoma tissue of EBL cattle. There were a few bta-miRNAs that correlated with BLV tax/rex gene expression; however, BLV AS1 expression had a significant negative correlation with many of the down-regulated bta-miRNAs that are important for tumor development and/or tumor suppression. These results suggest that BLV promotes lymphomagenesis via AS1 and blv-miRNAs, rather than tax/rex, by down-regulating the expression of bta-miRNAs that have a tumor-suppressing function, and this downregulation is linked to increased PVL.

Background Procalcitonin, a biomarker used to detect systemic bacterial infection, can be elevated in other conditions. Some case reports have suggested procalcitonin elevation induced by drug overdose. Case Presentation A 20‐year‐old woman with insignificant medical history presented with vomiting, fever, and impaired consciousness. Her vital signs showed an altered mental status (Glasgow Coma Scale score, 11 [E4V1M6]) and high fever (38.0°C), and no significant neurological signs were detected. Laboratory tests revealed that her serum procalcitonin level was significantly high (>10 ng/dL). Gradually, her level of consciousness improved, and she admitted that she had taken an overdose of sympathomimetic drugs. She was discharged from the hospital on day 5 without any problems. Conclusion Drug overdose is seldom mentioned as one of the causes of serum procalcitonin level elevation. Sympathomimetic drug overdose can be one of the causes of procalcitonin elevation.

This single-institution cross-sectional study aimed to grasp the prevalence and features of neurocognitive dysfunction in HIV-infected hemophilia patients in Japan. We conducted neuropsychological tests and medical examinations in 56 HIV-infected hemophilia patients who received outpatient treatment at the AIDS Clinical Center, National Center for Global Health and Medicine. A total of 388 HIV-infected non-hemophilia patients who received outpatient treatment at the same institution were included as a control group. To investigate sites responsible for neurocognitive dysfunction in HIV-infected hemophilia patients using brain FDG-PET/CT scans, the accumulation of FDG in each brain region was compared. Approximately 50% of HIV-infected hemophilia patients had neurocognitive dysfunction. The prevalence of asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment was high (34%). Neurocognitive dysfunction was associated with educational level in HIV-infected hemophilia patients. In the symptomatic group, hemophilic arthropathy and history of cerebrovascular disorders were associated with neurocognitive dysfunction. Left temporal lobe function was reduced in the symptomatic group.

Abstract Background Intestinal duplication, a congenital malformation, is considered a rare condition, particularly in adults. Although it affects young children, a minority of patients remains asymptomatic until adulthood. Here, we describe a case of an intestinal duplication cyst that caused intussusception by a unique mechanism. Case presentation A 19-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for intermittent abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed colonic intussusception induced by a nodular mass in the ileocecal region. Urgent ileocecal resection was performed because of the risk of colonic ischemia. The resected material comprised a stool-filled noncommunicating cyst that protruded into the enteric lumen at the ileocecal valve. Histological analyses revealed that the inner wall of the cyst was lined with colonic mucosa and that the muscle layer of the cyst was shared with that of the original enteric wall; furthermore, the cyst had a vestige of an opening site in the wall. We concluded that the cyst was an intestinal duplication that poured stool into its lumen through the tiny orifice, thereby triggering intussusception. Conclusions The present case suggests that stool-pouring can cause intussusception into the space of an intestinal duplication lesion.

Objectives: Microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy is one of the best treatment modalities for varicoceles related to male infertility and scrotal pain. However, the difficulty in identifying testicular arteries, which should be spared, is a limitation of this technique. To visualize and identify the testicular arteries in spermatic cord during the operation, we examined the efficacy of intraoperative indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), which is regularly used in microsurgical neurosurgery. Methods: After the exposure of the spermatic cord blood vessels, ICG was injected intravenously under a surgical microscope for observing infrared fluorescence in patients to identify and isolate the testicular artery. Results: The testicular artery was clearly identified by ICGA and was able to separate under ICGA view. Thereafter, the varicose veins were repeatedly ligated, while preserving a few lymphatic vessels and the spermatic duct. The preserved arteries were confirmed by repeated ICGA at the end of microsurgical operation. The number of arteries identified by ICGA was greater than the number detected by preoperative computed tomography angiogram. Conclusions: Microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy using intraoperative ICGA facilitated safe and quick surgery by enabling the visualization of the spermatic cord blood vessels. This is the first report to indicate the usefulness of vessel visualization by ICGA during microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy.

We studied the ferrimagnet La_{5}Mo_{4}O_{16} with Mo ions on quasisquare lattices both experimentally and theoretically. We found that in addition to the antiferromagnetic ordering at T_{N}=200 K, a magnetic phase transition into a ferrimagnetic phase occurs at T_{s1}=60 K, which is caused by the orbital ordering of the Mo 4d states. We also found that the relatively small size of ferrimagnetic domains despite the large Ising anisotropy of the Mo spins are formed below T_{s1}, which are responsible for the relaxation behavior and the memory effect in the magnetization. Nonvolatile positive magnetoresistance observed in this compound below T_{s1} can be attributed to the fact that such magnetic domains and the electrical conduction along the domain walls disappear with the applied magnetic field.

The single-point compression principle, based on the collision of pulsed supermulti-jets, which is proposed in our previous reports, has the potential of obtaining both a high compression ratio and relatively low combustion noise, leading to a lower exhaust gas temperature, i.e., high thermal efficiency for the next generation of engines. The supermulti-jets also enclose high-temperature combustion gas around the chamber center, which means less heat loss to the chamber wall, i.e., higher thermal efficiency due to the air-insulation effect. Here, experimental and computational visualizations around the compression point should be examined in order to confirm the occurrence of single-point compression. Thus, in the present paper, we present experimental Schlieren photographs of flows formed by the collision of supermulti-jets without combustion and the results of unsteady three-dimensional computations conducted with the compressible Navier-Stokes equations, while the Cubic Interpolated pseudo-Particle (CIP) and Combined Unified Procedure (CUP) method is employed as numerical algorithm. Comparison of the experimental and computational results show fairly good agreement in time and space. Schlieren photographs and computational visualizations obtained for various conditions of four-, eight-, and sixteen- nozzles of jets are axial symmetrical, which will indicate the single-point compression based on the collision of supermulti-jets. Computations for asymmetrical distribution of seven nozzles also bring results showing nearly symmetric flow.
