Search

The development of high-intensity ultrashort laser pulses unlocks the potential of pump-probe spectroscopy in sub-femtosecond timescale. Notably, subcycle pump pulses can generate electronic states unreachable by conventional multicycle pulses, leading to a phenomenon that we refer to as subcycle-pulse engineering. In this study, we employ the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method to unveil the transient absorption spectra of superconducting and metallic states in nearly half-filled one-dimensional and two-dimensional Hubbard models excited by an ultrashort halfcycle pulse, which can induce a current with inversion-symmetry breaking. In a superconducting state realized in attractive on-site interactions, we find the transient activation of absorptions at energies corresponding to the amplitude modes of superconducting and charge-density-wave states. On the other hand, in a metallic state realized in the two-dimensional model with repulsive on-site interactions, we obtain another type of absorption enhancements, which are distributed broadly in spin excitation energies. These findings indicate that superconducting and metallic states are sensitive to an ultrashort halfcycle pulse, leading to the transient activations of optical absorptions with their respective mechanisms., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) for a newly discovered doped one-dimensional (1D) Mott insulator Ba$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{3+\delta}$ proposed the presence of attractive charge interactions between neighboring sites if an 1D Hubbard model is employed to describe the material. On the other hand, long-range repulsive charge interactions were proposed to be crucial for understanding optical excitations of undoped 1D Mott insulators. Motivated by these contrasting proposals, we perform density-matrix renormalization group calculations of the single-particle spectral function as well as dynamical spin and charge structure factors for two kinds of extended 1D Hubbard models. The spectral function for the long-range repulsive model less agrees with the ARPES data as compared with that for the attractive one. The dynamical spin and charge structure factors also exhibit contrasting behaviors between the two models: the attractive model shows less momentum dependence of the integrated weight in the dynamical spin structure factor and more accumulation of the weight on the upper edge of particle-hole-type excitation in the dynamical charge structure factor. These features give a good criterion of an appropriate model for doped 1D Mott insulators, which can be judged by resonant-inelastic x-ray scattering experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The recent experimental observations of loop current in Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$, YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$, and Sr$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ have inspired a theoretical study that broadly redefines loop current as a manifestation of quantum liquid crystals. Using the density-matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the emergence of spin loop-current (sLC) textures in carrier-doped (i) excitonic insulators, (ii) orbital-selective Mott insulators, and (iii) two-dimensional Mott insulators, modeled by a two-orbital Hubbard model on a ladder lattice in (i) and (ii) and a single-orbital Hubbard model on a square lattice in (iii). Calculating the spatial distribution of spin current around a bond to which a pinning field is applied, we find conditions for longer-ranged sLC correlations. In system (i), when using the model parameters employed to describe the excitonic condensation, we find that a sLC texture appears near half filling, associated with an excitonic condensation in a spin channel. In system (ii), using typical sets of model parameters for BaFe$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, we find that a sLC texture appears at electron fillings where a block-type antiferromagnetism develops. In system (iii), introducing a next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t'\sim -0.25$ (in units of the nearest-neighbor hopping) suggested for high-$T_\text{c}$ cuprates, we find that an axial-sLC texture emerges at hole-carrier density $\delta=0.125$, where the charge stripe simultaneously appears., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Photoinduced nonequilibrium states in the Mott insulators reflect the fundamental nature of competition between itinerancy and localization of the charge degrees of freedom. The spin degrees of freedom will also contribute to the competition in a different manner depending on lattice geometry. We investigate pulse-excited optical responses of a half-filled two-leg Hubbard ladder and compare them with those of a one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain. Calculating the time-dependent optical conductivity, we find that strong mono-cycle pulse inducing quantum tunneling gives rise to anomalous suppression of photo-induced in-gap weight, leading to negative weight. This is in contrast to finite positive weight in the Hubbard chain. The origin of this anomalous behavior in the two-leg ladder is attributed to photoinduced localized exciton that reflects strong spin-singlet dimer correlation in the ground state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. Owning to their high controllability, laser pulses have contributed greatly to our understanding of strongly correlated electron systems. However, typical multicycle pulses do not control the symmetry of systems that plays an important role in the emergence of novel quantum phases. Here, we demonstrate that subcycle pulses whose oscillation is less than one period within a pulse envelope can control inversion and time-reversal symmetries in the electronic states of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. Using an ultrashort subcycle pulse, one can generate a steady electric current (SEC) in a photoexcited state due to an Aharonov-Bohm flux instantaneously introduced through the phase of an electric field. Consequently, time-reversal symmetry is broken. In contrast, a broad subcycle pulse does not induce SEC but instead generates electric polarization, thus breaking inversion symmetry. Both symmetry breakings in a photoexcited state can be monitored by second harmonic generation. These findings provide a new methodology for designing the symmetries of electronic states and open up a new field of subcycle-pulse engineering., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The photoexcitation of a Mott insulator on a square lattice weakens the intensity of both single- and two-magnon excitations as observed in time-resolved resonant-inelastic X-ray scattering and time-resolved Raman scattering, respectively. However, the spectral changes in the low-energy regions below the magnons have not yet been clearly understood. To uncover the nature of the photoinduced low-energy magnetic excitations of the Mott insulator, we numerically investigate the transient magnetic dynamics in a photoexcited half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice. After turning off a pump pulse tuned for an absorption edge, new magnetic signals clearly emerge well below the magnon energy in both single- and two-magnon excitations. We find that the low-energy excitations are predominantly created via excitonic states at the absorption edge. These exciton-assisted magnetic excitations may provide a possible explanation for the low-energy spectral weight in a recent time-resolved two-magnon Raman scattering experiment for insulating YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.1}$., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 2 pages supplemental note with 3 figures

The elucidation of nonequilibrium states in strongly correlated systems holds the key to emergence of novel quantum phases. The nonequilibrium-induced insulator-to-metal transition is particularly interesting since it reflects the fundamental nature of competition between itinerancy and localization of the charge degrees of freedom. We investigate pulse-excited insulator-to-metal transition of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. Calculating the time-dependent optical conductivity with the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group, we find that strong mono- and half-cycle pulses inducing quantum tunneling strongly suppress spectral weights contributing to the Drude weight $\sigma_\text{D}$, even if we introduce a large number of carriers $\Delta n_\text{d}$. This is in contrast to a metallic behavior of $\sigma_\text{D}\propto \Delta n_\text{d}$ induced by photon absorption and chemical doping. The strong suppression of $\sigma_\text{D}$ in quantum tunneling is a result of the emergence of the Hilbert-space fragmentation, which makes pulse-excited states glassy., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures + Supplemental Material (11 pages, 5 figures)

The real part of optical conductivity $\text{Re}\sigma(\omega)$ of the Mott insulators has a large amount of information on how spin and charge degrees of freedom interact with each other. By using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group, we study $\text{Re}\sigma(\omega)$ of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice at half filling. We find an excitonic peak at the Mott-gap edge of $\text{Re}\sigma(\omega)$ not only for the two-dimensional square lattice but also for two- and four-leg ladders. For the square lattice, however, we do not clearly find a gap between an excitonic peak and continuum band, which indicates that a bound state is not well defined. The emergence of an excitonic peak in $\text{Re}\sigma(\omega)$ implies the formation of a spin polaron. Examining the dependence of $\text{Re}\sigma(\omega)$ on the on-site Coulomb interaction and next-nearest neighbor hoppings, we confirm that an excitonic peak is generated from a magnetic effect. Electron scattering due to an electron-phonon interaction is expected to easily suppress an excitonic peak since spectral width of an excitonic peak is very narrow. Introducing a large broadening in $\text{Re}\sigma(\omega)$ by modeling the electron-phonon coupling present in La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$ and Nd$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$, we obtain $\text{Re}\sigma(\omega)$ comparable with experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Frustrated one-dimensional quantum spin systems are known to exhibit a variety of quantum ground states due to the effects of quantum fluctuations and frustrations. In a spin-1/2 kagome-strip chain, which is one of the frustrated one-dimensional spin systems, many quantum phases have been found. However, the magnetic phase diagrams of the kagome-strip chain under magnetic field have not been fully understood. We construct magnetic phase diagrams at 0, 1/5, 3/10, 1/3, 2/5, 7/15, 3/5, and 4/5 magnetization ratio in the kagome-strip chain and investigate magnetic properties in each phase using the density matrix renormalization group method. We find fifteen magnetization-plateau phases, one of which is equivalent to the spin-1 Haldane phase.

The role of nonstoquasticity in the field of quantum annealing and adiabatic quantum computing is an actively debated topic. We study a strongly-frustrated quasi-one-dimensional quantum Ising model on a two-leg ladder to elucidate how a first-order phase transition with a topological origin is affected by interactions of the $\pm XX$-type. Such interactions are sometimes known as stoquastic (negative sign) and nonstoquastic (positive sign) "catalysts". Carrying out a symmetry-preserving real-space renormalization group analysis and extensive density-matrix renormalization group computations, we show that the phase diagrams obtained by these two methods are in qualitative agreement with each other and reveal that the first-order quantum phase transition of a topological nature remains stable against the introduction of both $XX$-type catalysts. This is the first study of the effects of nonstoquasticity on a first-order phase transition between topologically distinct phases. Optical measurements in doped Mott insulators have discovered the emergence of spectral weights at mid-infrared (MIR) upon chemical doping and photodoping. MIR weights may have a relation to string-type excitation of spins, which is induced by a doped hole generating misarranged spins with respect to their sublattice. There are two types of string effects: one is an $S^z$ string that is repairable by quantum spin flips and the other is a phase string irreparable by the spin flips. We investigate the effect of $S^{z}$ and phase strings on MIR weights. Calculating the optical conductivity of the single-hole Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime and the $t$-$J$ model on two-leg ladders by using time-dependent Lanczos and density-matrix renormalization group, we find that phase strings make a crucial effect on the emergence of MIR weights as compared with $S^{z}$ strings. Our findings indicate that a mutual Chern-Simons gauge field acting between spin and charge degrees of freedom, which is the origin of phase strings, is significant for obtaining MIR weights. Conversely, if we remove this gauge field, no phase is picked up by a doped hole. As a result, a spin-polaron accompanied by a local spin distortion emerges and a quasiparticle with a cosine-like energy dispersion is formed in single-particle spectral function. Highly frustrated spin systems such as the kagome lattice (KL) are a treasure trove of new quantum states with large entanglements. We thus study the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on a kagome-strip chain (KSC), which is one-dimensional KL, using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. Calculating central charge and entanglement spectrum for the KSC, we find a novel gapless spin liquid state with doubly degenerate entanglement spectra in a 1/5 magnetization plateau. We also obtain a gapless low-lying continuum in the dynamic spin structure calculated by dynamical DMRG method. We propose a resonating dimer-monomer liquid state that would meet these features.

Motivated by the magnetic phase transition of a proximate Kitaev system $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ in the presence of a magnetic field, we study the simplest but essential quantum spin model with the ferromagnetic nearest neighboring (NN) Kitaev interaction and additional antiferromagnetic third NN Heisenberg interaction. Employing both exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the model shows the magnetic phase transition from the zigzag order phase to the spin polarized phase through an intermediate phase in both cases when an in-plane magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the NN bond direction and when an out-of-plane field is applied, in good agreement with experimental observations. Furthermore, we verify that additional symmetric off-diagonal $\Gamma$ interaction and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction between NN spins can both suppress the intermediate phase with the in-plane field. The ground state of a hole-doped t-t'-J ladder with four legs favors a striped charge distribution. Spin excitation from the striped ground state is known to exhibit incommensurate spin excitation near q=(pi,pi) along the leg direction (qx direction). However, an outward dispersion from the incommensurate position toward q=(0,pi) is strong in intensity, inconsistent with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiment in hole-doped cuprates. Motivated by this inconsistency, we use the t-t'-J model with m x n=96 lattice sites by changing lattice geometry from four-leg (24x4) to rectangle (12x8) shape and investigate the dynamical spin structure factor by using the dynamical density matrix renormalization group. We find that the outward dispersion has weak spectral weights in the 12x8 lattice, accompanied with the decrease of excitation energy close to q=(pi,pi), being consistent with the INS data. In the 12x8 lattice, weakening of incommensurate spin correlation is realized even in the presence of the striped charge distribution. For further investigation of geometry related spin dynamics, we focus on direction dependent spin excitation reported by recent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) for cuprate superconductors and obtain a consistent result with RIXS by examining an 8x8 t-t'-J square lattice., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, to be published in J. Magnetization plateaux emerging in quantum spin systems due to spontaneously breaking of translational symmetry have been reported both theoretically and experimentally. The broken symmetry can induce reconstruction of elementary excitations such as Goldstone and Higgs modes, whereas its microscopic mechanism and reconstructed quasi-particle in magnetization-plateau phases have remained unclear so far. Here we theoretically study magnetic excitations in the magnetization-plateau phases of a frustrated spin ladder by using dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method. Additionally, analytical approaches with perturbation theory are performed to obtain intuitive view of magnetic excitations. Comparison between numerical and analytical results indicates the presence of a reconstructed quasi-particle originating from spontaneously broken translational symmetry, which is realized as a collective mode of spin trimer called trimeron., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We propose an effective model called the "charge model", for the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard and extended Hubbard models. In this model, spin-charge separation, which has been justified from an infinite on-site repulsion ($U$) in the strict sense, is compatible with charge fluctuations. Our analyses based on the many-body Wannier functions succeeded in determining the optical conductivity spectra in large systems. The obtained spectra reproduce the spectra for the original models well even in the intermediate $U$ region of $U=5-10T$, with $T$ being the nearest-neighbor electron hopping energy. These results indicate that the spin-charge separation works fairly well in this intermediate $U$ region against the usual expectation and that the charge model is an effective model that applies to actual quasi-one-dimensional materials classified as strongly correlated electron systems., Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures

Photoinduced nonequilibrium states can provide new insight into dynamical properties of strongly correlated electron systems. One of the typical and extensively studied systems is the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model (1DEHM). Here, we propose that the supervised machine learning (ML) can provide useful information for characterizing photoexcited states in 1DEHM. Using entanglement spectra as a training dataset, we construct neural network. Judging from the trained network, we find that bond-spin-density wave (BSDW) order can be enhanced in photoexcited states if the frequency of a driving pulse nearly resonates with gap. We separately calculate the time evolution of local and non-local order parameters and confirm that the correlation functions of BSDW are actually enhanced by photoexcitation as predicted by ML. The successful prediction of BSDW demonstrates the advantage of ML to assist characterizing photoexcited quantum states., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

Numerous scientific and engineering applications require numerically solving systems of equations. Classically solving a general set of polynomial equations requires iterative solvers, while linear equations may be solved either by direct matrix inversion or iteratively with judicious preconditioning. However, the convergence of iterative algorithms is highly variable and depends, in part, on the condition number. We present a direct method for solving general systems of polynomial equations based on quantum annealing, and we validate this method using a system of second-order polynomial equations solved on a commercially available quantum annealer. We then demonstrate applications for linear regression, and discuss in more detail the scaling behavior for general systems of linear equations with respect to problem size, condition number, and search precision. Finally, we define an iterative annealing process and demonstrate its efficacy in solving a linear system to a tolerance of $10^{-8}$., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. The Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on both honeycomb and triangular lattices has been studied intensively in recent years as a possible model to describe spin-orbital physics in iridium oxides. In the model, there are many phases characteristic for each lattice. However, there is no study how the phases in the two lattices merge each other when geometry changes from honeycomb lattice to triangular lattice. We investigate the ground state of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on the system connecting the honeycomb and triangular lattices, named a honeycomb-triangular lattice. We obtain a ground state phase diagram of this model with classical spins by using the Luttinger-Tisza method and classical Monte Carlo simulation. In addition to known phases in the honeycomb and triangular lattices, we find coexisting phases consisting of the known phases. Based on the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations for the model with quantum spins, we find that quantum fluctuations less affect on the phase diagram.

The ground state of the t-t'-J ladder with four legs favors a striped charge distribution for the parameters corresponding to hole-doped cuprate superconductors. We investigate the dynamical spin and charge structure factors of the model by using the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and clarify the influence of the stripe on the structure factors. The dynamical charge structure factor along the momentum direction from q=(0,0) to (pi,0) clearly shows low-energy excitations corresponding to the stripe order in hole doping. On the other hand, the stripe order weakens in electron doping, resulting in fewer low-energy excitations in the charge channel. In the spin channel, we find incommensurate spin excitations near q=(pi,pi) forming an hourglass behavior in hole doping, while in electron doping we find clearly spin-wave-like dispersions starting from q=(pi,pi). Along the (0,0)-(pi,0) direction, the spin excitations are strongly influenced by the stripes in hole doping, resulting in two branches that form a discontinuous behavior in the dispersion. In contrast, the electron-doped systems show a downward shift in energy toward (pi,0). These behaviors along the (0,0)-(pi,0) direction are qualitatively similar to momentum-dependent spin excitations recently observed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments in hole- and electron-doped cuprate superconductors., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Spin-1/2 compounds A3Cu3AlO2(SO4)4 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) have one-dimensional (1D) inequilateral diamond chains. We analyze the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and determine the magnetic exchange interactions. In contrast to the azurite, a dimer is formed on one of the sides of the diamond. From numerical analyses of the proposed model, we find that the dimer together with a nearly isolated 1D Heisenberg chain characterizes magnetic properties including magnetization curve and magnetic excitations. This implies that a dimer-monomer composite chain without frustration is a good starting point for describing these compounds.

We investigate the ground state properties of $\mathrm{Na_2IrO_3}$ based on numerical calculations of the recently proposed {\it ab initio} Hamiltonian represented by Kitaev and extended Heisenberg interactions. To overcome the limitation posed by small tractable system sizes in the exact diagonalization study employed in a previous study (Yamaji $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{113}$, 107201 (2014)), we apply two-dimensional density matrix renomalization group, and infinite-size tensor-network method. By calculating at much larger system sizes, we critically test the validity of the exact diagonalization results. The results consistently indicate that the ground state of $\mathrm{Na_2IrO_3}$ is a magnetically ordered state with zigzag configuration in agreement with experimental observations and the previous diagonalization study. Applications of the two independent methods in addition to the exact diagonalization study further uncover a consistent and rich phase diagram near the zigzag phase beyond the accessibility of the exact diagonalization. For example, in the parameter space away from the $\textit{ab initio}$ value of $\mathrm{Na_2IrO_3}$ controlled by the trigonal distortion, we find three phases: (i) an ordered phase with the magnetic moment aligned mutually in $120$ degrees orientation on every third hexagon, (ii) a magnetically ordered phase with a $16$-site unit-cell, and (iii) an ordered phase with presumably incommensurate periodicity of the moment. It suggests that potentially rich magnetic structures may appear in $A_\mathrm{2}\mathrm{IrO_3}$ compounds for $A$ other than Na. The present results also serve to establish the accuracy of the first-principles approach in reproducing the available experimental results thereby further contribute to find a route to realize the Kitaev spin liquid., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method is employed to examine the ground state phase diagram of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at half filling. The calculation reveals two discontinuities in the double occupancy with increasing the repulsive Hubbard interaction U at Uc1 = 7.55 t and Uc2 = 9.65 t (t being the hopping integral), indicating that there are three phases separated by first order transitions. The absence of any singularity in physical quantities for 0 < U < Uc1 implies that this phase corresponds to a metallic phase. The local spin density induced by an applied pinning magnetic field for U > Uc2 exhibits a three sublattice feature, which is compatible with the Neel ordered state realized in the strong coupling limit. For Uc1 < U < Uc2, a response to the applied pinning magnetic field is comparable to that in the metallic phase but a relatively large spin correlation length is found with neither valence bond nor chiral magnetic order, suggesting a paramagnetic nature which resembles gapless spin liquid. The calculation also finds that the pair- ing correlation function monotonically decreases with increasing U and thus the superconductivity is unlikely in the intermediate phase., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

We study the Kitaev--Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice by using the two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method. Calculating the ground-state energy and spin structure factors, we obtain a ground-state phase diagram of the Kitaev--Heisenberg model. As suggested by previous studies, we find a 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase, a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortex crystal phase, a nematic phase, a dual $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortex crystal phase (the dual counterpart of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-vortex crystal phase), a $\mathbb{Z}_6$ ferromagnetic phase, and a dual ferromagnetic phase (the dual counterpart of the $\mathbb{Z}_6 $ ferromagnetic phase). Spin correlations discontinuously change at phase boundaries because of first-order phase transitions. We also study the relation among the von Neumann entanglement entropy, entanglement spectrum, and phase transitions of the model. We find that the Schmidt gap closes at phase boundaries and thus the entanglement entropy clearly changes as well. This is different from the Kitaev--Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice, where the Schmidt gap and entanglement entropy are not necessarily a good measure of phase transitions., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) tuned for the Cu L edge is a possible tool to detect charge excitations in cuprate superconductors. We theoretically investigate the possibility for observing a collective charge excitation by the RIXS. The RIXS process via the intermediate state inevitably makes the spectral weight of charge excitation stronger in electron doping than in hole doping. Electron-hole asymmetry also appears in the dynamical charge structure factor, showing a new enhanced small-momentum low-energy mode in electron doping. We examine the third-order non-linear optical response of a one-dimensional Mott insulator coupled with phonons. The Mott insulator is described by an extended Hubbard-Holstein model. The third harmonic generation (THG) of the model is calculated by dynamical density-matrix renormalization group. We find that the electron-phonon interaction enhances the intensity of THG if the on-site Coulomb interaction is comparable to the band width, but the enhancement is small for a realistic parameter value of a typical Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_3$. The low-energy spin excitation does not contribute to the optical response if the electron-phonon coupling is neglected. We find that the THG spectrum can detect the spin excitations even for no electron-phonon coupling. The introduction of the electron-phonon coupling leads to a slight increase of low-energy weight in THG without peak structure through phonon-assisted spin excitation. To fully understand the phonon-assisted spin excitation, we additionally calculate the linear susceptibility of a doped Hubbard-Holstein model, showing a spectral distribution different from that at half filling., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model including additional anisotropic couplings by using two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method. Calculating the gound-state energy, entanglement entropy, and spin-spin correlation functions, we make a phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model around spin-liquid phase. We find a zigzag antiferromagnetic phase, a ferromagnetic phase, a 120-degree antiferromagnetic phase, and two kinds of incommensurate phases around the Kitaev spin-liquid phase. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spectrum of the model and find that entanglement levels in the Kitaev spin-liquid phase are degenerate forming pairs but those in the magnetically ordered phases are non-degenerate. The Schmidt gap defined as the energy difference between the lowest two levels changes at the phase boundary adjacent to the Kitaev spin-liquid phase. However, we find that phase boundaries between magnetically ordered phases do not necessarily agree with the change of the Schmidt gap., Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures

By employing the time-dependent Lanczos method, the nonequilibrium process of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model under the irradiation of a transient laser pulse is investigated. We show that in the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase, the antiferromagnetic spin correlations are impaired by the photoinduced charge carriers. Near the phase boundary between the SDW and charge-density-wave (CDW) phases, a local enhancement of charge (spin) order that is absent in the original SDW (CDW) phase can be realized with proper laser frequency and strength. We present a compelling response of a low-dimensional strongly correlated system to an external perturbation. Using the time-dependent Lanczos method we investigate a nonequilibrium evolution of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, driven by a transient laser pulse. When the system is close to the phase boundary, by tuning the laser frequency and strength, a sustainable charge order enhancement is found that is absent in the Mott insulating phase. We analyze the conditions and investigate possible mechanisms of emerging charge order enhancement. Feasible experimental realizations are proposed., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study spin dynamics of a spin-Peierls chain with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg spin exchange interactions together with a gapped and dispersionless phonon. The dynamical spin correlation function and phonon excitation spectrum are calculated at zero temperature by using dynamical density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find a new spin excitation assisted by non-softening phonon. The excitation is located above phonon in energy and shows a dispersive feature with strong intensity near the momentum $\pi$. The phonon excitation spectrum is also influenced by the spin-phonon interaction. We discuss the possibility of observing the spin-phonon coupled features in inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO$_3$., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Applying newly developed dynamical density matrix renormalization group techniques at zero and finite temperatures to a Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling, we examine the optical conductivity of a typical one-dimensional Mott insulator Sr_2CuO_3. We find a set of parameters in the Hubbard-Holstein model, which can describe optical conductivity for both Mott-gap excitation in the high-energy region and phonon-assisted spin excitation in the low-energy region. We examine recombination processes of photocarriers in one-dimensional Mott insulators coupled to phonons. Performing density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find that, even for small electron-phonon coupling, many phonons are generated dynamically, which cause initial relaxation process after the irradiation. At the same time, spin-charge coupling coming from mixing of high- and low-energy states by the irradiation is suppressed. We study spin chirality for a spin-1/2 zigzag XY chain at low temperature by applying a low-temperature density-matrix renormalization group technique. We calculate temperature dependence of dynamical and static correlations of the chirality. In a chiral phase, chiral long-range order at zero temperature disappears at finite temperature, consistent with the fact that there is no long-range order at finite temperature in one-dimensional systems with short-range interactions. In a dimer phase next to the chiral phase, we find an enhancement of static chiral correlation as well as spin correlation with increasing temperature. The enhancement corresponds to the increase of spectral weight inside a gap in the dynamical chiral-correlation function. This temperature-induced chiral correlation is a demonstration of the presence of a chiral state in excited states., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We propose a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique at finite temperatures. As is the case of the ground state DMRG, we use a single-target state that is calculated by making use of a regulated polynomial expansion. Both static and dynamical quantities are obtained after a random-sampling and averaging procedure. We apply this technique to the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling and find that this gives excellent results at low temperatures., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures.
