La adecuada estimación del consumo de nutrientes de animales en pastoreo permite identificar estrategias para aumentar la sustentabilidad productiva y ambiental de la producción ganadera. En este estudio, se estimó el consumo, digestibilidad y excreción de nutrientes de novillos de diversos cruces, pastoreando en praderas de kikuyo (Pennisetum clandestinum), en una finca de trópico de altura y distribuidos en dos grupos: el grupo SS (peso inicial: 380,0±19,97 kg) que se encontraba únicamente en pastoreo y el grupo CS (peso inicial: 374,7±20,81 kg), que además del pastoreo, recibió 0,55 kg/día de un suplemento de maíz, melaza y grasa animal (51, 12 y 37%, respectivamente). Los animales CS pastoreaban en 2,5 ha y los SS en 3,2 ha. El consumo de materia seca (CMS) y la producción de heces fueron determinados mediante la técnica de alcanos. El CMS fue de 7,97 y 7.19 kg de MS, 2,13±0,07 y 1,89±0,027 como porcentaje del peso vivo o 93,59 y 83,54 g por kilogramo de peso metabólico en los animales CS y SS, respectivamente. La excreción fecal fue de 3,40±0,25 y 3,29±0,51 kg/día, siendo la digestibilidad de 56,2 y 54,7% para el grupo CS y SS, respectivamente. Hubo un consumo alto de PC y un consumo intermedio de FDN, FDA y cenizas y el consumo de calcio y fósforo fue bajo. Se determina para mejorar los parámetros zootécnicos de la ceba de novillos en praderas de P. clandestinum es necesario identifi car una fuente energética adecuada para mejorar la relación energía: proteína de la dieta. Adequate estimates of nutrient intake by grazing animals are necessary to increase production and environmental sustainability of livestock production. In this study, intake, digestibility and nutrient excretion by steers of various crosses grazing on Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) on a tropical highland farm were estimated. Animals were distributed into two grazing groups: Animals in one group (NS: 380.0±19.97 kg initial weight) were only grazing, whereas those of the other group (S: 374.7±20.81 kg initial weight) also received 0.55 kg/ day of a corn, molasses and tallow (51, 12 and 37%, respectively) supplement. Supplemented animals grazed in 2.5 ha whereas NS animals grazed in 3.2 ha. Both intake and fecal output were determined by the alkane technique. Daily dry matter intake in the S animals, was 2.13±0.07 of liveweight, 93.59 g per kg of metabolic weight (MW) and 7.97 kg of DM, while that of NS animals was y 1.89±0.027 of liveweight, 83.54 g per kg of PM and 7.19 kg of DM. Fecal excretion was 3.40±0.25 and 3.29±0.51 % kg/ day, thus digestibility was 56.2 and 54.7 % for S and NS groups, respectively. High crude protein intake, intermediate intakes of NDF, ADF and ash and low intakes of calcium and phosphorus were observed. It was determined that to improve zootechnical parameters when fattening steers on kikuyu pastures, it is necessary to identify a suitable energy source to improve the energy: protein ratio of the diet.
