Recently, rotation sensors utilizing the nuclear spins of nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond have been demonstrated. However, these devices are power-intensive and challenging to integrate into small chip-based radiofrequency antennas and circuits necessary for controlling nuclear spins or producing relatively high magnetic fields. To address this issue, the coherent manipulation of nuclear spins via coherent population trapping at moderate magnetic fields using microwave fields has been successfully demonstrated in isotopically pure diamond. In this work, we demonstrate that a similar technique can be applied to a diamond plate with a natural abundance of carbon-13, which holds significant potential for practical sensing applications. Although the forbidden resonances required for coherent control were only partially observed, coherent population trapping was successfully demonstrated at both visible and invisible transitions, with an apparent contrast of up to 98 +- 11% and a true contrast of approximately 35 +-7%. This finding confirms the feasibility of coherent nuclear spin control even in diamond plates with naturally occurring carbon-13.

Temperature sensors based on GeV color center in diamond are attracting a lot of attention in both science and industry. The industrial adoption of these sensors nevertheless, requires the simplest and cheapest possible design for the sensing element. The original sensor design was based on the measurement of the spectral characteristics of the zero-phonon line. Recently, a modification of this method has been proposed utilizing splitting the GeV emission with a dichroic mirror and determining on temperature from the ratio of two resulting signals. In this analysis, we compare both methods in detail. For measurements near room temperature, both methods have comparable behavior, slightly depended on quality of components used. However, for optimal parameters of a filter at temperatures of about 300 {\deg}C, the new method already outperforms the original by about a factor of 2. Moreover, the sensitivity of the new method remains approximately consistent with that observed at room temperature.

The nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond attracts a lot of attention in sensing applications, mainly for temperature, magnetic field, and rotation measurements. Nuclear spins of carbon-13 surrounding the nitrogen-vacancy center can be used as a memory or sensing element. In the current work, a diamond plate with a relatively large concentration of carbon-13 was synthesized and examined. The spectrum of optically detected magnetic resonance was recorded and analyzed in a magnetic field range of 5-200 G. A strain-independent measurement technique of carbon-13 isotope concentration based on the analysis of magnetic resonance spectra was developed. Additionally, narrow features in the spectrum were detected and understood.

Nitrogen-vacancy centers possessing nuclear spins are promising candidates for a novel nuclear spin gyroscope. Preparation of a nuclear spin state is a crucial step to implement a sensor that utilizes a nuclear spin. In a low magnetic field, such a preparation utilizes population transfer, from polarized electronic spin to nuclear spin, using microwave pulses. The use of the narrowband microwave pulse proposed earlier is inefficient when magnetic transitions are not well resolved, particularly when applied to diamond with a natural abundance of carbon atoms or dense ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy centers. In this study, the authors performed optimization of the pulse shape for 3 relatively easily accessible pulse shapes. The optimization was done for a range of magnetic transition linewidths, corresponding to the practically important range of nitrogen concentrations (5-50 ppm). It was found that, while at low nitrogen concentrations, optimized pulse added very little to simple square shape pulse, and in the case of dense nitrogen-vacancy ensembles, with a rather wide magnetic transition width of 1.5 MHz optimal pulses, a factor of 15% improvement in the population of the target state was observed.

The nitrogen-vacancy color center in diamond is one of the most important systems in the fast-growing field of sensing. This color centers are used in both high-resolution and high-sensitivity sensors. However, techniques for quick and efficient formations of this color center are still in the development stage. In this paper, we present a study on the influence of the electron irradiation dose on the conversion of substitutional nitrogen into $\text{N}{{\text{V}}^{-}}$ centers. The study was done on diamonds that were highly enriched with nitrogen (~100 ppm), which on one hand should maximize the effect of irradiation, and on another be of interest for high-sensitivity magnetometers. The maximum achieved conversion efficiency was as high as ${37\pm 3.7}$, with no observed saturation on the electron dose even with the simplest annealing procedure. The measurements of the corresponding dephasing time made it possible to estimate for shot-noise limited sensitivity per unit volume of a stationary field sensor with such a diamond to be ${9\pm 1\times {{10}^{-14}}\text{T}}/{\sqrt{\text{Hz}\cdot \text{m}{{\text{m}}^{-3}}}}\;$.

Optical atomic clocks have already overcome the eighteenth decimal digit of instability and uncertainty demonstrating incredible control over external perturbations of the clock transition frequency. At the same time there is an increasing demand for atomic and ionic transitions with minimal sensitivity to external fields, with practical operational wavelengths and robust readout protocols. One of the goals is to simplify clock's operation maintaining its relative uncertainty at low 10-18 level. It is especially important for transportable and envisioned space-based optical clocks. We proved earlier that the 1.14um inner-shell magnetic dipole transition in neutral thulium possesses very low blackbody radiation shift compared to other neutrals. Here we demonstrate operation of a bi-colour thulium optical clock with extraordinary low sensitivity to the Zeeman shift due to a simultaneous interrogation of two clock transitions and data processing. Our experiment shows suppression of the quadratic Zeeman shift by at least three orders of magnitude. The effect of tensor lattice Stark shift can be also reduced to below 10-18 in fractional frequency units. All these features make thulium optical clock almost free from hard-to-control systematic shifts. Due to the low sensitivity of the thulium optical clock to black-body radiation and good accuracy and stability estimations, it appears to be one of the most promising transportable optical clocks. One of the leading systematic effects for Tm clock transition, namely the second-order Zeeman effect, can be canceled by probing two clock transitions between different hyperfine levels of ground and metastable states during the clock operation. We prepare the atoms in $m_F=0$ state of both ground hyperfine levels simultaneously and excite alternately two clock transitions. Here we demonstrate efficient optical pumping into both target states via single-frequency radiation at 418.8 nm. The resulting population of $m_F=0$ states of ground hyperfine levels is 36% and 3.8% of the initial number of atoms with less than 4% and 0.4% on non-zero magnetic sublevels, correspondingly. Mg2+ effect on the thermal stability of the double-stranded polynucleotide polyIpolyC (IC) under conditions close to physiological ones (0.1M Na+, pH7) was studied by the differential UV spectroscopy. The initial increase of the ion concentration ([Mg2+]) leads to the increase of the melting temperature (Tm) and to the decrease of the absorption hyperchromicity value that is caused by the helix-coil transition (hmax). Mg2+ interacts to p-electrons of hypoxanthine or cytosine rings (cation-p-interaction). When [Mg2+] reaches a critical value of about 10-4 M, Tm decreases and hmax increase to values close to one observed in the absence of magnesium. It is supposed that at [Mg2+]=[Mg2+]cr IC transits into a new structural state. With [Mg2+>[Mg2+]cr Tm increases again and hmax slowly decreases. The sensitivity of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond-based magnetometers strongly depends on the number of NV centers involved in the measurement. Unfortunately, an increasing concentration of NV centers leads to decreases of their dephasing and coherence time if the nitrogen content exceeds a certain threshold level (approximately ${10^{17}}{\rm{ c}}{{\rm{m}}^{ - 3}}$). Here, we demonstrate that this increased dephasing can be efficiently compensated by postprocessing procedures in the vicinity of the threshold concertation, thus extending possible useful concentrations on NV centers with the maximum possible decoherence time in diamonds with a natural carbon content.

With direct polarizability measurements we demonstrated extremely low sensitivity of the inner-shell clock transition at $1.14\,\mu$m in Tm atoms to external dc electric fields and black-body radiation (BBR). We measured differential polarizabilities of clock levels in Tm at wavelengths of 810--860\,nm and at 1064\,nm and inferred the static scalar differential polarizability of the inner-shell clock transition of $-0.047(18)$ atomic units corresponding to only $2\times10^{-18}$ fractional frequency shift from BBR at the room temperature. This is a few orders of magnitude smaller compared to the BBR shift of the clock transitions in the neutral atoms (Sr, Yb, Hg) and competes with the least sensitive ion species (e.g. Al$^+$ or Lu$^+$). For the $1.14\,\mu$m clock transition, we experimentally determined the "magic" wavelength of $813.320(6)$\,nm, recorded the transition spectral linewidth of $10$\,Hz, and measured its absolute frequency of $262\,954\,938\,269\,213(30)$\,Hz., Comment: 9 pages, revised contribution from BBR magnetic field and electric quadrupole shift

We report on an experiment in which the fluorescence decay time of 5P levels of Rb atoms in a coated vapor cell exceeds several of milliseconds, many orders of magnitude longer than normal decay time of excited of rubidium atoms. We found that this peculiarly long - term decay is not exponential and can only be observed in a high quality coated cell with a long lifetime of optical pumped atoms on atomic ground-state sublevels. A numerical simulation based on a complete density matrix is presented. It supports the population pumping process through the ground-state sublevels of Rb atoms as the most plausible mechanism for the observed phenomenon and it consistently demonstrates all the relevant features of the experiment. Nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond was found to be a powerful tool for various sensing applications. The main work horse of this center so far has been optically detected electron resonance. Utilization of the nuclear spin has the potential of significantly improving sensitivity in rotation and magnetic field sensors. Ensemble-based sensors consume quite a bit of power, thus requiring an understanding of temperature-related shifts. In this article, we provide a detailed study of the temperature shift of the hyperfine components of the NV center.

The sensitivity of magnetic and electric field sensors based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond strongly depends on the available concentration of NV and their coherence properties. Achieving high coherence times simultaneously with high concentration is a challenging experimental task. Here, we demonstrate that by using a high-pressure, high-temperature growing technique, one can achieve nearly maximally possible effective coherence T2* times, limited only by carbon nuclear spins at low nitrogen concentrations or nitrogen electron spin at high nitrogen concentrations. Hahn-echo T2 coherence times were also investigated and found to demonstrate reasonable values. Thus, the high-pressure, high-temperature technique is a strong contender to the popular chemical vapor deposition method in the development of high-sensitivity, diamond-based sensors.

Minimization of internal degrees of freedom is an important step in the cooling of atomic species to degeneracy temperature. Here, we report on the loading of 6*10^5 thulium atoms optically polarized at maximum possible magnetic quantum number mf=-4 state into dipole trap operating at 532 nm. The purity of polarizations of the atoms was experimentally verified using a Stern-Gerlach-type experiment. Experimental measured polarization of the state is 3.91(26).

We present the results of a study on relaxation and diffusion processes of rubidium atoms in a rubidium cell with an internal vapor source. The cell is an evacuated glass bulb, which is characterized in that the source of atomic vapors in the form of a metal film Rb is evenly distributed throughout the inner surface of the bulb, and the paraffin film is uniformly distributed over the entire area and over the metal surface. By using laser optical pumping, we performed measurements of the relaxation time and the average number of bounces of optical pumped rubidium atoms in the bulb. We have measured the adsorption time of rubidium atoms by paraffin coating and rubidium atoms diffusion coefficient in paraffin used. A simple model of the pumping and atomic diffusion processes in the cell is discussed as well., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Second-stage laser cooling of thulium atoms at the 530.7 nm transition with a natural linewidth of 350 kHz offers an interesting possibility to study different regimes of a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The intermediate value of the spectral linewidth of the cooling transition allows the observation of three distinct regimes depending on intensity and detuning of the cooling beams. Namely, the "bowl-shaped" regime when light pressure force competes with gravity, the "double structure" regime with interplay between Doppler and polarization-gradient (sub-Doppler) cooling, and the "symmetric" regime when Doppler cooling dominates over sub-Doppler cooling and gravity. The polarization-gradient cooling manifests itself by a two-temperature momentum distribution of atoms resulting in a double-structure of the spatial MOT profile consisting of a cold central fraction surrounded by a hot halo. We studied the "double structure" regime at different saturation parameters and compared observations with calculations based on semiclassical and quantum approaches. On the basis of quasipotential method in quantum electrodynamics we calculate nuclear finite size radiative corrections of order $\alpha(Z \alpha)^5$ to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen and helium. To construct the interaction potential of particles, which gives the necessary contributions to the energy spectrum, we use the method of projection operators to states with a definite spin. Separate analytic expressions for the contributions of the muon self-energy, the muon vertex operator and the amplitude with spanning photon are obtained. Further development of quantum emitter based communication and sensing applications intrinsically depends on the availability of robust single-photon detectors. Here, we demonstrate a new generation of superconducting single-photon detectors specifically optimized for the 500-1100 nm wavelength range, which overlaps with the emission spectrum of many interesting solid-state atom-like systems, such as nitrogen-vacancy and silicon-vacancy centers in diamond. The fabricated detectors have a wide dynamic range (up to 350 million counts per second), low dark count rate (down to 0.1 counts per second), excellent jitter (62 ps), and the possibility of on-chip integration with a quantum emitter. In addition to performance characterization, we tested the detectors in real experimental conditions involving nanodiamond nitrogen-vacancy emitters enhanced by a hyperbolic metamaterial.

We report on the improved measurement of the hyperfine structure of $4f^{12}(^3 H_6)5d_{5/2}6s^2$ $(J=9/2)$ excited state in Tm-169 which is involved in the second-stage laser cooling of Tm. To measure the absolute value of the hyperfine splitting interval we used Doppler-free frequency modulation saturated absorption spectroscopy of Tm atoms in a vapor cell. The sign of the hyperfine constant was determined independently by spectroscopy of laser cooled Tm atoms. The hyperfine constant of the level equals $A_J=-422.112(32)$ MHz that corresponds to the energy difference between two hyperfine sublevels of $-2110.56(16)$~MHz. In relation to the saturated absorption measurement we quantitatively treat contributions of various mechanisms into the line broadening and shift. We consider power broadening in the case when Zeeman sublevels of atomic levels are taken into account. We also discuss the line broadening due to frequency modulation and relative intensities of transitions in saturated-absorption experiments.
