Abstract

We present an experimental platform for linear-optical quantum information processing. Our setup utilizes multiphoton generation using a high-quality single-photon source, which is demultiplexed across multiple spatial channels, a custom-designed, programmable, low-loss photonic chip, and paired with high-efficiency single-photon detectors. We demonstrate the platform's capability in producing heralded arbitrary two-qubit dual-rail encoded states, a crucial building block for large-scale photonic quantum computers. The programmable chip was fully characterized through a calibration process that allowed us to create a numerical model accounting for fabrication imperfections and measurement errors. As a result, using on-chip quantum state tomography (QST), we achieved high-fidelity quantum state preparation, with a fidelity of 98.5\% specifically for the Bell state., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

2. Can Search-Based Testing with Pareto Optimization Effectively Cover Failure-Revealing Test Inputs?

Abstract

Search-based software testing (SBST) is a widely adopted technique for testing complex systems with large input spaces, such as Deep Learning-enabled (DL-enabled) systems. Many SBST techniques focus on Pareto-based optimization, where multiple objectives are optimized in parallel to reveal failures. However, it is important to ensure that identified failures are spread throughout the entire failure-inducing area of a search domain and not clustered in a sub-region. This ensures that identified failures are semantically diverse and reveal a wide range of underlying causes. In this paper, we present a theoretical argument explaining why testing based on Pareto optimization is inadequate for covering failure-inducing areas within a search domain. We support our argument with empirical results obtained by applying two widely used types of Pareto-based optimization techniques, namely NSGA-II (an evolutionary algorithm) and OMOPSO (a swarm-based Pareto-optimization algorithm), to two DL-enabled systems: an industrial Automated Valet Parking (AVP) system and a system for classifying handwritten digits. We measure the coverage of failure-revealing test inputs in the input space using a metric that we refer to as the Coverage Inverted Distance quality indicator. Our results show that NSGA-II-based search and OMOPSO are not more effective than a na\"ive random search baseline in covering test inputs that reveal failures. Abstract

Recently, rotation sensors utilizing the nuclear spins of nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond have been demonstrated. However, these devices are power-intensive and challenging to integrate into small chip-based radiofrequency antennas and circuits necessary for controlling nuclear spins or producing relatively high magnetic fields. To address this issue, the coherent manipulation of nuclear spins via coherent population trapping at moderate magnetic fields using microwave fields has been successfully demonstrated in isotopically pure diamond. In this work, we demonstrate that a similar technique can be applied to a diamond plate with a natural abundance of carbon-13, which holds significant potential for practical sensing applications. Although the forbidden resonances required for coherent control were only partially observed, coherent population trapping was successfully demonstrated at both visible and invisible transitions, with an apparent contrast of up to 98 +- 11% and a true contrast of approximately 35 +-7%. This finding confirms the feasibility of coherent nuclear spin control even in diamond plates with naturally occurring carbon-13.

Abstract

Temperature sensors based on GeV color center in diamond are attracting a lot of attention in both science and industry. The industrial adoption of these sensors nevertheless, requires the simplest and cheapest possible design for the sensing element. The original sensor design was based on the measurement of the spectral characteristics of the zero-phonon line. Recently, a modification of this method has been proposed utilizing splitting the GeV emission with a dichroic mirror and determining on temperature from the ratio of two resulting signals. In this analysis, we compare both methods in detail. For measurements near room temperature, both methods have comparable behavior, slightly depended on quality of components used. However, for optimal parameters of a filter at temperatures of about 300 {\deg}C, the new method already outperforms the original by about a factor of 2. Moreover, the sensitivity of the new method remains approximately consistent with that observed at room temperature.

Abstract

Photon entanglement is indispensable for optical quantum technologies. Measurement-based optical quantum computing and all-optical quantum networks rely on multiphoton cluster states consisting of indistinguishable entangled photons. A promising method for creating such cluster states on demand is spin-photon entanglement using the spin of a resident charge carrier in a quantum dot, precessing in a weak external magnetic field. In this work, we show theoretically and experimentally that spin-photon entanglement is strongly affected by the hidden anisotropy of quantum dots, which can arise from mechanical stress, shape anisotropy and even specific crystal structure. In the measurements of time-resolved photoluminescence and cross-polarized second-order photon correlation function in a magnetic field, the anisotropy manifests itself in the spin dynamics and, as a consequence, in the spin-photon concurrence. The measured time-filtered spin-photon Bell state fidelity depends strongly on the excitation polarization and reaches an extremely high value of 94% at maximum. We specify the magnetic field and excitation polarization directions that maximize spin-photon entanglement and thereby enhance the fidelity of multiphoton entangled states.

6. Single-quantum annihilation of positrons at low energies

Abstract

We discuss the single-quantum positron annihilation with a bound electron in the near threshold region. The angular distribution and the total cross section are considered. We obtain a simple analytical expression for the Coulomb potential and for the screened potential. It is worth noting that the obtained results for the screened potential are universal and independent of the explicit form of the atomic potential. It is shown that screening significantly increases the cross section. We also obtain the analogous results for bound-free $e^+e^-$ photoproduction., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

7. Chirped pulse waveguide amplifier

Abstract

We introduce a single-mode Cr:ZnS crystalline waveguide ultrafast amplifier that provides a high gain of 5.5 dB/cm and 2.35 W of average output power. The depressed-cladding buried waveguide is produced by an ultrafast laser writing procedure, which allows a high degree of flexibility in fabrication when the geometry, size, and even effective index can be modified along the waveguide. An analytical model that includes both, pump and pulse propagation, allows calculation and optimization of the waveguide design. In a CPA arrangement with a volume Bragg grating-based stretcher/compressor, we demonstrate a broadband 34-mm long amplifier in a polycrystalline Cr:ZnS with a single-pass gain factor of 75 (5.5 dB/cm) and a high average output power up to 2.35 W., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

8. BABILong: Testing the Limits of LLMs with Long Context Reasoning-in-a-Haystack

Abstract

In recent years, the input context sizes of large language models (LLMs) have increased dramatically. However, existing evaluation methods have not kept pace, failing to comprehensively assess the efficiency of models in handling long contexts. To bridge this gap, we introduce the BABILong benchmark, designed to test language models' ability to reason across facts distributed in extremely long documents. BABILong includes a diverse set of 20 reasoning tasks, including fact chaining, simple induction, deduction, counting, and handling lists/sets. These tasks are challenging on their own, and even more demanding when the required facts are scattered across long natural text. Our evaluations show that popular LLMs effectively utilize only 10-20\% of the context and their performance declines sharply with increased reasoning complexity. Among alternatives to in-context reasoning, Retrieval-Augmented Generation methods achieve a modest 60\% accuracy on single-fact question answering, independent of context length. Among context extension methods, the highest performance is demonstrated by recurrent memory transformers, enabling the processing of lengths up to 11 million tokens. The BABILong benchmark is extendable to any length to support the evaluation of new upcoming models with increased capabilities, and we provide splits up to 1 million token lengths.

9. Winning Amazon KDD Cup'24

Abstract

This paper describes the winning solution of all 5 tasks for the Amazon KDD Cup 2024 Multi Task Online Shopping Challenge for LLMs. The challenge was to build a useful assistant, answering questions in the domain of online shopping. The competition contained 57 diverse tasks, covering 5 different task types (e.g. multiple choice) and across 4 different tracks (e.g. multi-lingual). Our solution is a single model per track. We fine-tune Qwen2-72B-Instruct on our own training dataset. As the competition released only 96 example questions, we developed our own training dataset by processing multiple public datasets or using Large Language Models for data augmentation and synthetic data generation. We apply wise-ft to account for distribution shifts and ensemble multiple LoRA adapters in one model. We employed Logits Processors to constrain the model output on relevant tokens for the tasks. AWQ 4-bit Quantization and vLLM are used during inference to predict the test dataset in the time constraints of 20 to 140 minutes depending on the track. Our solution achieved the first place in each individual track and is the first place overall of Amazons KDD Cup 2024.

Abstract

Robotic manipulation is challenging due to discontinuous dynamics, as well as high-dimensional state and action spaces. Data-driven approaches that succeed in manipulation tasks require large amounts of data and expert demonstrations, typically from humans. Existing manipulation planners are restricted to specific systems and often depend on specialized algorithms for using demonstration. Therefore, we introduce a flexible motion planner tailored to dexterous and whole-body manipulation tasks. Our planner creates readily usable demonstrations for reinforcement learning algorithms, eliminating the need for additional training pipeline complexities. With this approach, we can efficiently learn policies for complex manipulation tasks, where traditional reinforcement learning alone only makes little progress. Furthermore, we demonstrate that learned policies are transferable to real robotic systems for solving complex dexterous manipulation tasks.

12. AriGraph: Learning Knowledge Graph World Models with Episodic Memory for LLM Agents

Abstract

Advancements in the capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) have created a promising foundation for developing autonomous agents. With the right tools, these agents could learn to solve tasks in new environments by accumulating and updating their knowledge. Current LLM-based agents process past experiences using a full history of observations, summarization, retrieval augmentation. However, these unstructured memory representations do not facilitate the reasoning and planning essential for complex decision-making. In our study, we introduce AriGraph, a novel method wherein the agent constructs and updates a memory graph that integrates semantic and episodic memories while exploring the environment. We demonstrate that our Ariadne LLM agent, consisting of the proposed memory architecture augmented with planning and decision-making, effectively handles complex tasks within interactive text game environments difficult even for human players. Results show that our approach markedly outperforms other established memory methods and strong RL baselines in a range of problems of varying complexity. Abstract

The use of skeletal data allows deep learning models to perform action recognition efficiently and effectively. Herein, we believe that exploring this problem within the context of Continual Learning is crucial. While numerous studies focus on skeleton-based action recognition from a traditional offline perspective, only a handful venture into online approaches. In this respect, we introduce CHARON (Continual Human Action Recognition On skeletoNs), which maintains consistent performance while operating within an efficient framework. Through techniques like uniform sampling, interpolation, and a memory-efficient training stage based on masking, we achieve improved recognition accuracy while minimizing computational overhead. Our experiments on Split NTU-60 and the proposed Split NTU-120 datasets demonstrate that CHARON sets a new benchmark in this domain. Abstract

At ambient conditions, SiC is known to be resistant to irradiation with swift heavy ions (SHI) decelerating in the electronic stopping regime. However, there is no experimental data on the SiC irradiation at elevated temperatures. To investigate this problem, we evaluate the stability of SiC to SHI impacts at high temperatures up to 2200 K. We apply the combination of the Monte-Carlo code TREKIS-3, describing excitation of the electronic and atomic systems using temperature-dependent scattering cross-sections, with molecular-dynamic modeling of the lattice response to the excitation. We demonstrate that increasing irradiation temperature increases the energy transferred to the atomic lattice from the excited electronic system. This material heating leads to formation of a stable nanometric damaged core along the trajectory of 710 MeV Bi ion when the irradiation temperature overcomes the threshold of ~1800 K. In this case, a chain of nanometric voids along the ion trajectory forms due to the mass transport from the track core by edge dislocations. Voids of larger sizes appear at higher irradiation temperatures. At lower irradiation temperatures, the damaged regions recrystallize completely within ~100 ps after the ion passage.

15. In Search of Needles in a 11M Haystack: Recurrent Memory Finds What LLMs Miss

Abstract

This paper addresses the challenge of processing long documents using generative transformer models. To evaluate different approaches, we introduce BABILong, a new benchmark designed to assess model capabilities in extracting and processing distributed facts within extensive texts. Our evaluation, which includes benchmarks for GPT-4 and RAG, reveals that common methods are effective only for sequences up to $10^4$ elements. In contrast, fine-tuning GPT-2 with recurrent memory augmentations enables it to handle tasks involving up to $11\times 10^6$ elements. Abstract

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract

Layered magnets are stand-out materials because of their range of functional properties that can be controlled by external stimuli. Regretfully, the class of such compounds is rather narrow, prompting the search for new members. Graphitization - stabilization of layered graphitic structures in the 2D limit - is being discussed for cubic materials. We suggest the phenomenon to extend beyond cubic structures; it can be employed as a viable route to a variety of layered materials. Here, the idea of graphitization is put into practice to produce a new layered magnet, GdAlSi. The honeycomb material, based on graphene-like layers AlSi, is studied both experimentally and theoretically. Epitaxial films of GdAlSi are synthesized on silicon; the critical thickness for the stability of the layered polymorph is around 20 monolayers. Notably, the layered polymorph of GdAlSi demonstrates ferromagnetism stemming from the open 4f-shells of Gd, in contrast to the non-layered, tetragonal polymorph. The ferromagnetism is further supported by electron transport measurements revealing negative magnetoresistance and the anomalous Hall effect. The results show that graphitization can be a powerful tool in the design of functional layered materials.

Abstract

An assurance case has become an integral component for the certification of safety-critical systems. While manually defining assurance case patterns can be not avoided, system-specific instantiations of assurance case patterns are both costly and time-consuming. It becomes especially complex to maintain an assurance case for a system when the requirements of the System-Under-Assurance change, or an assurance claim becomes invalid due to, e.g., degradation of a systems component, as common when deploying learning-enabled components. In this paper, we report on our preliminary experience leveraging the tool integration framework Evidential Tool Bus (ETB) for the construction and continuous maintenance of an assurance case from a predefined assurance case pattern. Specifically, we demonstrate the assurance process on an industrial Automated Valet Parking system from the automotive domain. We present the formalization of the provided assurance case pattern in the ETB processable logical specification language of workflows. Abstract

A distributed Kerr-lens mode locking regime can be realized in a waveguide laser by spatial profiling of the pump beam, thus creating a spatio-temporal soliton. Additional slow temporal modulation of the pump source stabilizes the spatio-temporal solution in a broad range of parameters, which are defined by the dynamic gain saturation. We choose a Cr:ZnS waveguide laser as a practical example, but such a regime is feasible in various waveguide and fiber oscillators. In this paper we initiate the study of six-dimensional non-linear chiral two-form gauge theories as deformations of free chiral two-form gauge theories driven by stress-tensor $T\overline T$-like flows. To lay the background for this study, we elaborate on the relationship between different Lagrangian formulations of duality-invariant p-form theories and corresponding $T\overline T$-like flows in various dimensions. To this end we propose a new formulation which (i) is a generalization of the four-dimensional construction by Ivanov, Nurmagambetov and Zupnik (INZ) and (ii) turns into the PST formulation upon integrating out an auxiliary self-dual field. Abstract

In this paper, we present NSGA-II-SVM (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm with Support Vector Machine Guidance), a novel learnable evolutionary and search-based testing algorithm that leverages Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification models to direct the search towards failure-revealing test inputs. Supported by genetic search, NSGA-II-SVM creates iteratively SVM-based models of the test input space, learning which regions in the search space are promising to be explored. A subsequent sampling and repetition of evolutionary search iterations allow to refine and make the model more accurate in the prediction. Our preliminary evaluation of NSGA-II-SVM by testing an Automated Valet Parking system shows that NSGA-II-SVM is more effective in identifying more critical test cases than a state of the art learnable evolutionary testing technique as well as naive random search., Comment: Accepted for DeepTest Workshop at ICSE '24

29. Monitoring Auditable Claims in the Cloud

Abstract

When deploying mission-critical systems in the cloud, where deviations may have severe consequences, the assurance of critical decisions becomes essential. Typical cloud systems are operated by third parties and are built on complex software stacks consisting of e.g., Kubernetes, Istio, or Kafka, which due to their size are difficult to be verified. Nevertheless, one needs to make sure that mission-critical choices are made correctly. We propose a flexible runtime monitoring approach that is independent of the implementation of the observed system that allows to monitor safety and data-related properties. Our approach is based on combining distributed Datalog-based programs with tamper-proof storage based on Trillian to verify the premises of safety-critical actions. The approach can be seen as a generalization of the Certificate Transparency project. We apply our approach to an industrial use case that uses a cloud infrastructure for orchestrating unmanned air vehicles.

Abstract

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.
