This weekly report from JIRAM team to Juno’s Project started on July 2020, due to the Project's decision to remove as of October 2020 the IOSE (Instrument Operations System Engineer), role covered by Dr. Shawn Brooks from JPL. In detail, an email exchange was established from the Juno Project to JIRAM (called JNO2JRM_YYYYMMDD and sent every Monday evening) and from JIRAM to the Project (called JRM 2JNO_YYYYMMDD and sent every Friday evening) to ensure interactions and mutual exchange of information between the team of JIRAM and the Juno Project. This document describes the Ancillary Information for the prime products. The Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM, Adriani et al., 2017) is an imaging spectrometer on board the Juno spacecraft, which started observing Jupiter on August 2016 (Bolton et al., 2017). The JIRAM scientific goals are to explore the Jovian aurorae and the planet’s atmospheric structure, dynamics and composition. The main auroral oval emission has been investigated by JIRAM since orbit insertion (2016), as well as the thermal emission from the atmosphere. All technical information on JIRAM instrument can be found in Adriani et al., (2017). In summaty JIRAM has two imaging channel (L-band and M-band) and one spectrometer channel. Both JIRAM L-band and M-band imaging channels acquire images (128 x 432 pixels each), with a pixel angular resolution is 0.01°. The FoV of both bands is 5.87° by 1.74 ° degrees; the spatial resolution, at the surface, varies along the spacecraft distance and it is of the order of 100 km. The integration time for L-band (auroral images) is always 1 s, while for the M-band (atmosphere) it is of the order of 10 ms, The spectrometer acquires 256 spectra, from 2 to 5 μm with 9nm spectral sampling, arranged along a 1D slit (the spectrometer data is not used in this dataset)Because Juno is a spinning spacecraft, there is a dedicated de-spinning mirror that compensates for the spacecraft rotation. For this reason, the instrument can perform only one acquisition for each spacecraft turn (that is, every 30 s), made both 2 images (2 filters) and one slit of spectra. By setting the time of the observation, and taking advantage of the rotation of Juno, JIRAM can tilt its field of view (FoV) above or below the sub-spacecraft point, along the plane perpendicular to Juno spin axis. JIRAM cannot articulate its FoV in any other direction without turning the spacecraft.

The study of the micro-meteoroid environment is relevant to planetary science, space weathering of airless bodies, as Mercury, and their upper atmospheric chemistry. In this case, the meteoroids hit directly the surface without any interaction with the atmospheric particles, producing impact debris and contributing to shape its thin exosphere. This work is focused on study and modelling of the Mercury’s exosphere formation through the process of Micro-Meteoroids Impact Vaporization (MMIV) from the planetary surface. The MESSENGER/NASA mission visited Mercury in the period 2008-2015, providing measurements of unprecedented quality of Mercury’s exosphere, which permit the study of the seasonal variations of metals like Calcium. The Ca in Mercury’s exosphere exhibited very high energies, with a scale height consistent with a temperature > 20,000 K, seen mainly on the dawnside of the planet. The origin of this high-energy, asymmetric source is unknown. The generating mechanism is believed to be a combination of different processes including the release of atomic and molecular surface particles and the photodissociation of exospheric molecules. We work on models of Mercury’s impactors: we consider the arrival geometry of the Mercury-intercepting particles and provide a detailed Ca-source extraction model simulating the expected 3-D CaO and Ca density distribution in Mercury’s exosphere due to the MIV mechanism. We simulate the photodissociation of the initially released CaO molecules that populates the exosphere with thermal Ca atoms and energetic Ca components generated from the dissociative ionization and neutralization processes, excluding specific events like comet stream crossing. We study how the impact vapor varies with heliocentric distance and compare the results to the MESSENGER observations. Our results show that the 3-D morphology of the MIV-generated Ca exosphere is consistent with the UVVS observations, these support the idea that the Ca source peaks near the dawn region: CaO exosphere is denser above the dawn hemisphere where the molecules are preferentially ejected into the exosphere by MIV process; Ca is preferentially seen in the midnight-to-dawn quadrant where CaO molecules are released by micrometeroid impacts and dissociated by the sunlight. The results presented in this work will be useful for the exosphere observations planning and for the data interpretation in the frame of the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission, that will study Mercury orbiting around the planet from 2025. More specifically, the resulting molecular distributions will be compared to the measurements of the SERENA-STROFIO mass spectrometer that will be the only instrument able to identify the molecular components.

This document describes the activities that JIRAM performed during the activity period JM0420 (PJ042), with particular attention to the comparison between the expected and returned data, keeping track of the instrument configuration with the commanding file (SASF).

JIRAM operated during PJ1 and from PJ4 through PJ44 . This review cover the period PJ36-PJ44, so the first orbit of the Juno Extended Mission.

Obiettivo scientifico primario della missione è migliorare significativamente la comprensione della formazione, l'evoluzione e la struttura di Giove. L’accordo con NASA per Juno è sostanziato e supportato da un MoU firmato da NASA ed ASI il 22 giugno del 2011 e da vari Technical Agreements tra le varie istituzioni partecipanti al progetto firmati anche da IAPS-INAF ed ASI (tra gli ultimi firmati segnaliamo TA 7769-10C del 2014 TA 3307-11C del 2013). JIRAM, oggetto di questo progetto, contribuisce alla missione fornendo osservazioni dell’atmosfera e dell’aurore gioviane. JIRAM è stato realizzato dalla LEONARDO SpA con il finanziamento dell’ASI e la responsabilità scientifica del suo utilizzo è dell’IAPS-INAF. JIRAM è costituto da uno spettrometro che lavora nell’intervallo spettrale 2-5 µm e da una fotocamera in grado di effettuare immagini del pianeta nelle bande spettrali L (aurore) e M (atmosfera). La fotocamera e lo spettrometro sono otticamente accoppiati in modo che per un definito numero di pixel della banda M della fotocamera si possa avere contemporaneamente l’informazione spettrale. Va ricordato che lo strumento opera a bordo di un satellite rotante (2 rpm), in un campo magnetico planetario particolarmente forte dove sono presenti intensi campi di radiazione ed ha un sistema di controllo termico passivo. L’immissione in orbita (JOI) è stata effettuata il 5 luglio 2016 e la fine della missione (de-orbiting) è prevista per il 30 luglio 2021. Sono state pianificate 34 orbite di durata media di circa 53 giorni. A settembre 2020 è stata presentata alla NASA la proposta per ottenere una estensione della missione fino al 2025, arrivando a compiere 76 orbite in totale. La proposta è stata approvata dalla NASA con budget Medio l’8 gennaio 2021. Durante questa fase estesa della missione sono previsti 16 flyby ravvicinati alle lune galileiane e le orbite si accorceranno fino ad arrivare a durare 33 giorni. Il passaggio dall’attuale fase di missione a quella estesa è avvebuto al peri-Giove 34, con un’orbita che è diventata di 43giorni. A gennaio 2021 sono stati rilasciati i primi kernels di riferimento per la pianificazione della fase estesa della missione. La nuova Generic Science Sequence, elaborata nella RA8 è diventata eseguibile dall’orbita 31. Da Aprile 2022, inizio del periodo di tempo coperto dall’ultima fase di questo accordo, JIRAM ha potuto lavorare durante tutti i peri-Giove che si sono succeduti, con l'eccezione dell PJ43, per il quale è presentato un report. I risultati presentati in questo rapporto coprono quindi i passaggi dal 42 al 45, le elaborazioni dei dati raccolti nei precedenti passaggi a Giove e le pianificazioni dei passaggi immediatamente successivi al 45.

Da ottobre 2020, inizio del periodo di tempo coperto dall’ultima fase di questo accordo, JIRAM ha potuto lavorare durante tutti i peri-Giove che si sono succeduti. I risultati presentati in questo rapporto coprono quindi i passaggi dal 29 al 37, le elaborazioni dei dati raccolti nei precedenti passaggi a Giove e le pianificazioni dei passaggi immediatamente successivi al 37.

Description of this data set The files named: "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0051.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0071.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0091.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0101.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0171.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0181.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0201.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0241.txt", "Io_mean_spectrum_JM0261.txt" contain the result of the processing of Juno/JIRAM spectroscopic data of Io acquired respectively during the data sequences: JM0051 (orbit 5), JM0071 (orbit 7), JM0091 (orbit 9), JM0101 (orbit 10), JM0171 (orbit 17), JM0181 (orbit 18), JM0201 (orbit 20), JM0241 (orbit 24), and JM0261 (orbit 26). Each of these files contains the average spectrum of Io in the 2-5 µm range as measured by JIRAM in that particular data sequence / orbit. All of these are ASCII files, where the first column represents the JIRAM wavelength vector expressed in microns (µm) after correction for the odd-even effect, and the second column is the average spectrum of Io expressed in units of calibrated radiance factor (I/F) resulting from that particular data sequence. The files named: "Redundancy_map_band_407um.dat" and "Statistical_weights_map_band_407um.dat" include the processed data related to the redundancy maps and statistical weights shown respectively in panels a and b of Figure 3. In particular, the redundancy map is stored as an unsigned integer, little-endian binary stream of bytes, while the statistical weight map is stored as a single-precision floating-point, little-endian binary stream of bytes. These bidimensional maps are ordered according to the Band Sequential (BSQ) image encoding. These files can be easily opened with the commercial ENVI software, and are accompanied by ASCII header files with same filename and suffix ".hdr". Such header files include details that are needed to properly open and read the ".dat" files without the ENVI software and regardless of the programming language being used. The files named: "WeightedAverage_map_band_407.dat", "WeightedAverage_map_band_437.dat", "WeightedAverage_map_band_279um.dat", and "WeightedAverage_map_band_254um.dat", include the processed data related to the maps shown respectively in panels a, b, c and d of Figure 4. JIRAM è stato realizzato dalla LEONARDO SpA con il finanziamento dell’ASI e la responsabilità scientifica del suo utilizzo è dell’IAPS-INAF. JIRAM è costituto da uno spettrometro che lavora nell’intervallo spettrale 2-5 µm e da una fotocamera in grado di effettuare immagini del pianeta nelle bande spettrali L (aurore) e M (atmosfera). La fotocamera e lo spettrometro sono otticamente accoppiati in modo che per un definito numero di pixel della banda M della fotocamera si possa avere contemporaneamente l’informazione spettrale. Va ricordato che lo strumento opera a bordo di un satellite rotante (2 rpm), in un campo magnetico planetario particolarmente forte dove sono presenti intensi campi di radiazione ed ha un sistema di controllo termico passivo. L’immissione in orbita (JOI) è stata effettuata il 5 luglio 2016 e la fine della missione (de-orbiting) è prevista per il 30 luglio 2021. Sono state pianificate 34 orbite di durata media di circa 53 giorni. Attualmente il team di missione sta proponendo una estensione di missione. Da novembre 2018, inizio del periodo di tempo coperto dalla quarta fase di questo accordo, JIRAM ha potuto lavorare durante tutti i perigiove che si sono succeduti. I risultati presentati in questo rapporto coprono quindi i passaggi dal 19 al 26, le elaborazioni dei dati raccolti nei precedenti passaggi a Giove e le pianificazioni dei passaggi immediatamente successivi al 26.

This weekly report from JIRAM team to Juno’s Project started on July 2020, due to the Project's decision to remove as of October 2020 the IOSE (Instrument Operations System Engineer), role covered by Dr. Shawn Brooks from JPL. In detail, an email exchange was established from the Juno Project to JIRAM (called JNO2JRM_YYYYMMDD and sent every Monday evening) and from JIRAM to the Project (called JRM 2JNO_YYYYMMDD and sent every Friday evening) to ensure interactions and mutual exchange of information between the team of JIRAM and the Juno Project. After the activity of SERENA Rehearsal on March 2020 with ESAC team, has been compared output of ELENA pipeline both from ESA Planetary Science Archive (PSA) Colombo-SERENA Local Archive and from IAPS Visualization Tool.

Purpose of this document is to provide engineering status of JIRAM instrument by reviewing instrument health and performance. The JIRAM Trending Review is required annually by the Juno Project. JIRAM operated during PJ1 and from PJ4 through PJ21 . This review cover the period PJ4-PJ21.

This document describes the activities that JIRAM performed during the activity period JM0131 (PJ13), with particular attention to the comparison with the expected data and that achieved, keeping track of the configuration of the instrument with commanding file (SASF).

Juno è una missione NASA del programma New Frontiers lanciata il 5 agosto 2011 dalla base di Cape Canaveral. Obiettivo scientifico primario della missione è migliorare significativamente la comprensione della formazione, l'evoluzione e la struttura di Giove. L’accordo con NASA per Juno è sostanziato e supportato da un MoU firmato da NASA ed ASI il 22 giugno del 2011 e da vari Technical Agreements tra le varie istituzioni partecipanti al progetto firmati anche da IAPS-INAF ed ASI (tra gli ultimi firmati segnaliamo TA 7769-10C del 2014 TA 3307-11C del 2013). JIRAM, oggetto di questo progetto, contribuisce alla missione fornendo osservazioni dell’atmosfera e dell’aurore gioviane. The Jupiter InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) is an imaging spectrometer on board the NASA Juno mission. Since August 2016 JIRAM has been observing both the atmosphere and auroral features of the giant planet. JIRAM also participates in the Juno Radiation Monitoring experiment, providing dedicated imager acquisitions to measure the high- energy particle environment at Jupiter. During the last year the JIRAM team has developed a new and complementary approach to monitor the radiation using a subset of spectrometer data. We present some results obtained with this new approach.
