Abstract

The Jupiter InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument onboard the Juno spacecraft performed repeated observations of Jupiter's North Equatorial Belt (NEB) around the time of 12th Juno pericenter passage on 2018 April 1. The data consist of thermal infrared images and show, among other atmospheric features, two bright Hotspots on the boundary between the NEB and the Equatorial Zone. Night-time images of the same areas at different emission angles were used to constrain the trend of the limb-darkening function. Comparison with simulated observations, computed for different emission angles, total opacities, single scattering albedo ω0, and asymmetry parameter g suggests that ω0 ∼ 0.90 ± 0.05 and g ∼ 0.37 ± 0.15 provide best match with data. Subsequently, we computed the ω0 and g resulting from different size distributions, taking into account the complex refractive indices of ammonium hydrosulfide (NH4SH) by Howett et al. [2007] and Ferraro et al. [1980]. Only the former data set is marginally consistent with JIRAM observations. Similarly, ammonia and hydrazine barely reproduce the experimental data. Tholin, although not usually considered a realistic component for Jupiter's aerosols, provides a better match for particle radii between 0.7 and 1 μm, both as a pure material as well as a thick coating over NH4SH cores. Notably, this radius range is consistent with the mean radius of aerosols as estimated by Ragent et al. [1998] on the basis of Galileo entry probe data. Abstract

We investigate the variability of the power emission of Io's hotspots by using recent Juno/JIRAM infrared observations. The Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) is an imaging spectrometer which began observing Jupiter in August 2016. Although observing Jupiter's moons is not its primary objective, JIRAM can use the frequent opportunities to observe Io (up to once per orbit) to gather infrared images and spectra of its surface. The present study uses the data acquired by JIRAM during the last 2 years, including the location and morphology of Io's hotspots, and the temporal variability of the total output. A new photometric model for the hotspots and the dayside surface has been developed, which permits us to disentangle the temporal variability from the changes in the observation geometry. While the latitudinal dependence of the power output is not well constrained, low-latitude hotspots show a significantly more intense temporal variability and greater temperature. Abstract

Atmospheric emission is a dominant source of disturbance in ground-based astronomy at mm wavelengths. The Antarctic plateau is recognized to be an ideal site for mm and sub-mm observations, and the French/Italian base of Dome C is among the best sites on Earth for these observations. In this paper we present measurements, performed using the BRAIN-pathfinder experiment, at Dome C of the atmospheric emission in intensity and polarization at 150GHz, one of the best observational frequencies for CMB observations when considering cosmic signal intensity, atmospheric transmission, detectors sensitivity, and foreground removal. Careful characterization of the air-mass synchronous emission has been performed, acquiring more that 380 elevation scans (i.e. "skydip") during the third BRAIN-pathfinder summer campaign in December 2009/January 2010. The extremely high transparency of the Antarctic atmosphere over Dome Concordia is proven by the very low measured optical depth: =0.050 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.011 where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic error. Mid term stability, over the summer campaign, of the atmosphere emission has also been studied. Adapting the radiative transfer atmosphere emission model "am" to the particular conditions found at Dome C, we also infer the level of the PWV content of the atmosphere, notoriously the main source of disturbance in millimetric astronomy (=0.77 +/- 0.06 + 0.15 - 0.12 mm). Upper limits on the air-mass correlated polarized signal are also placed for the first time. The degree of circular polarization of atmospheric emission is found to be lower than 0.2% (95%CL), while the degree of linear polarization is found to be lower than 0.1% (95%CL). Abstract

One of the major challenges of modern cosmology is the detection of B-mode polarization anisotropies in the CMB. These originate from tensor fluctuations of the metric produced during the inflationary phase. Their detection would therefore constitute a major step towards understanding the primordial Universe. The expected level of these anisotropies is however so small that it requires a new generation of instruments with high sensitivity and extremely good control of systematic effects. We propose the QUBIC instrument based on the novel concept of bolometric interferometry, bringing together the sensitivity advantages of bolometric detectors with the systematics effects advantages of interferometry. Methods: The instrument will directly observe the sky through an array of entry horns whose signals will be combined together using an optical combiner. The whole set-up is located inside a cryostat. Polarization modulation will be achieved using a rotating half-wave plate and interference fringes will be imaged on two focal planes (separated by a polarizing grid) tiled with bolometers. We show that QUBIC can be considered as a synthetic imager, exactly similar to a usual imager but with a synthesized beam formed by the array of entry horns. Scanning the sky provides an additional modulation of the signal and improve the sky coverage shape. The usual techniques of map-making and power spectrum estimation can then be applied. We show that the sensitivity of such an instrument is comparable with that of an imager with the same number of horns. We anticipate a low level of beam-related systematics thanks to the fact that the synthesized beam is determined by the location of the primary horns. Abstract

In this work, we present the detection of CH4 and H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ emissions in the equatorial atmosphere of Jupiter as two well‐separated layers located, respectively, at tangent altitudes of about 200 and 500–600 km above the 1‐bar level using the observations of the Jovian InfraRed Auroral Mapper (JIRAM), on board Juno. This provides details of the vertical distribution of H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ retrieving its Volume Mixing Ratio (VMR), concentration, and temperature. The thermal profile obtained from H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ shows a peak of 600–800 K at about 550 km, with lower values than the ones reported in Seiff et al. (1998), https://doi.org/10.1029/98JE01766 above 500 km using VMR and temperature as free parameters and above 650 km when VMR is kept fixed with that model in the retrieval procedure. The observed deviations from the Galileo's profile could potentially point to significant variability in the exospheric temperature with time. We suggest that vertically propagating waves are the most likely explanation for the observed VMR and temperature variations in the JIRAM data. Other possible phenomena could explain the observed evidence, for example, dynamic activity driving chemical species from lower layers toward the upper atmosphere, like the advection‐diffusion processes, or precipitation by soft electrons, although better modeling is required to test these hypothesis. The characterization of CH4 and H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ species, simultaneously observed by JIRAM, offers the opportunity for better constraining atmospheric models of Jupiter at equatorial latitudes. Plain Language Summary: The Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) is the infrared imager and spectrometer on board the Juno mission, designed to investigate Jupiter's atmosphere. A key objective of JIRAM is the investigation of the minor species, such as CH4 and H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ that are very important to understanding the energy balance of the middle and upper atmosphere of Jupiter. These species have strong signatures in the 3.3–3.8 μm spectral region, well within the nominal wavelength range of the instrument. We present the analysis of recent images and spectra obtained by JIRAM, in the period December 2018–September 2020, plus additional measurements in March 2017, to study methane and H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ vertical distribution at equatorial latitudes. We find that CH4 is localized around 200 km above the 1‐bar level, while a distinct layer of H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ is observed around 500–600 km (0.04–0.016 μbar). The observed vertical distribution and intensity variation of H3+ ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{+}$ is likely to be the result of vertically propagating waves. However, other possible phenomena can be invoked to explain these findings, like for example, an uplifting of chemical species from lower layers toward the upper atmosphere, or soft electrons precipitation, although a rigorous modeling is needed to confirm the latter hypothesis. Abstract

The Grain Impact Analyzer and Dust Accumulator (GIADA) is an in-situ instrument devoted to measure the dynamical properties of the dust grains emitted by the comet. Using the GIADA Proto Flight Model (PFM), installed in a clean room in our laboratory, an extended calibration activity \citep{Sordini14} has been carried out taking into account the knowledge gained through the analyses of IDPs and cometary samples returned from comet 81P/Wild 2 \citep{Brownlee et al. 2006, Rotundi et al. 2014}. GIADA consists of three measurement subsystems: the Grain Detection System, an optical device measuring the optical cross-section of single grain without affecting its dynamical properties; the Impact Sensor that measures the momentum released from each grain that impacts its sensitive surface, and the Micro Balance System, a network of five Quartz Micro Balances measuring the cumulative dust deposition from different space directions \citep{DellaCorte14}. The results of the analyses on data acquired with the GIADA PFM and the comparison with calibration data acquired during the pre-launch campaign allowed us to improve GIADA performances and capabilities. We report the results of the following main activities: - definition of a correlation between the two GIADA Models, i.e. PFM and In-Flight Model on-board Rosetta; - characterization of the sub-systems performances (signal elaboration, sensitivities, space environment effects); - new calibration measurements and related curves by means of the GIADA PFM using realistic cometary dust analogues \citep{Ferrari14}. All the analyses performed during this extended calibration activity are allowing to fully characterize the dynamic parameters of the dust particles ejected by the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko \citep{Rotundi et al. 2015, Fulle et al. 2015, Della Corte et al. 2015}.

The Antarctic plateau is recognized as an ideal site for millimetric and submillimetric observations, and the French/Italian base of Dome Concordia (Dome C) is among the best sites on Earth for these observations. In this paper, we present measurements at Dome C of the atmospheric emission in intensity and polarization at a 2-mm wavelength. This is one of the best observational frequencies for cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations when considering cosmic signal intensity, atmospheric transmission, detector sensitivity and foreground removal. Using the B-mode radiation interferometer (BRAIN)- pathfinder experiment, we have performed measurements of the atmospheric emission at 150 GHz. Careful characterization of the airmass synchronous emission has been performed, acquiring more than 380 elevation scans (i.e. ‘skydip’) during the third BRAIN-pathfinder summer campaign in 2009 December/2010 January. The extremely high transparency of the Antarctic atmosphere over Dome C is proven by the very low measured optical depth, τ I = 0.050 ± 0.003 ± 0.011, where the first error is statistical and the second is the systematic error. Mid-term stability, over the summer campaign, of the atmosphere emission has also been studied. Adapting the radiative transfer atmosphere emission model am to the particular conditions found at Dome C, we also infer the level of the precipitable water vapor (PWV) content of the atmosphere, which is notoriously the main source of disturbance in millimetric astronomy ( PWV = 0.77±0.06±0.15 0.12 mm).Upper limits on the airmass correlated polarized signal are also placed for the first time. The degree of circular polarization of atmospheric emission is found to be lower than 0.2 per cent [95 per cent confidence level (CL)], while the degree of linear polarization is found to be lower than 0.1 per cent (95 per cent CL). These limits include signal-correlated instrumental spurious polarization.
